WHY BANGOR FOR YOUR SPORT SCIENCE MASTERS? As a graduate you already know what it is like to be a student, but studying for a Masters degree is a big decision, and one you need to make carefully. Here are five key things you need to consider:
Buzzing student life. Bangor is a great place to live. The compact size and friendly atmosphere of the city and University means you’re bound to make new friends in a safe, affordable environment. In addition:
•
Student satisfaction
•
•
Quality of Teaching and Research
•
Your job prospects after you leave
•
Funding your studies
The University is ranked as one of the best places to be a student – 3rd in the UK for student support and 2nd in the UK for courses and lecturers (What Uni? Student Choice Awards, 2016)
•
Flexibility of study options
•
As part of a multi-million pound investment programme, we have built new postgraduate student residences offering affordable, allinclusive living to help make your money go further. Bangor’s halls have been ranked 1st in the UK (What Uni? Student Choice Awards, 2016) and are famous for their excellent views of Snowdonia.
•
The newly built Pontio centre offers a theatre, studio theatre, cinema, design studio, teaching and learning facilities, Student Union, cafes and much more.
With those in mind here’s why we think you should consider Bangor. Excellent student satisfaction. The School is consistently highly rated for student satisfaction in the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES). Our three year average for overall satisfaction is 86%.
Teaching and Research Excellence. At Bangor, we’ve been teaching high-calibre sport science degrees for nearly 40 years. Over this time, we’ve attracted world-leading academic staff who have helped create some of the UK’s best applied sport science degree programmes. Staff are passionate about their teaching and professional support to students and most have professionally recognised higher education teaching qualifications or fellowships. And all our teaching is backed up by outstanding, world-class research achievement – 7th in the UK. So, as a student at Bangor, you’ll get brilliant teaching from people who are leaders in your field of study. “This is one of the leading exercise science programmes in the UK and, in my experience of other similarly high ranking programmes, the standards applied are consistent with the best national standards.” Dr James Betts, MSc/MRes External Examiner, 2015/16
The School attracts approximately 45 postgraduate taught students per year so we’re much smaller than a lot of other university sport science schools. Our size enables us to offer a traditional approach to learning – smaller class sizes, more opportunity for one to one tuition and an ‘open door’ policy so that you can sign up for tutorials with any of our staff. Our teaching and research excellence and vibrant student life attracts students from home and abroad, including from Italy, Turkey, USA, China, Singapore, Bahrain, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil and Australia. Excellent Facilities and Location Based around a beautiful Grade II listed building on the banks of the Menai Strait, the School has an impressive range of laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment for sport and exercise physiology, motor control and learning, psychology and motion analysis.
“The Graduate Assistantship has been very rewarding. I have been able to help and guide other students at various different stages of their degrees as well as giving me the opportunity to gain transferable skills which will be invaluable in the future.” Clare Barwood, MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology Graduate Assistant, 2015/16
Boost your job prospects. An innovative feature of all postgraduate taught programmes is the Supervised Experience module. This module is student-led and aims to develop the personal professional development skills that are relevant to both your degree and your future career. This means that you don’t only come out with a highly respected Masters degree, but also with an enhanced CV that shows off the transferable skills you’ll need to excel in a competitive job market.
•
In addition: •
Market research shows that the cost of living in Bangor is much lower than other parts of the UK. Bangor has been described “one of the cheapest places in Britain” to be a student and is consistently ranked as one of the most economical places to study in the UK in various cost of living surveys.

Flexibility in the way you study. We offer a wide range of degree courses from taught MSc programmes to more researchintensive MRes degrees – so, whatever you want to learn, we have a degree to suit you. •
MSc degrees provide an academic qualification with a strong emphasis on the application of theory to professional practice. Our specialist courses give you the focused skills to work with elite performers or pursue a career in research in sport, exercise or health-related areas. Dependent on previous research experience and on academic performance during part one of the MSc programme, students on MSc degrees will either complete a dissertation (a literature review) or a research project (with empirical data collection).
•
MRes degrees are aimed at students who wish to gain more extensive research training in sport, health and exercise sciences. They provide students with the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the principles and application of research design and
analytical methods relevant to their scientific discipline. The programmes facilitate the integration of theory and professional practice, and throughout the research process an emphasis on student autonomy of learning become increasingly important. Professional accreditation Students have the opportunity to prepare for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) supervisory experience training, which is normally a pre-requisite of the Association's professional accreditation. Students on the BPS accredited course will be able to complete Stage 1 of the Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology.
