“OTROS ARTISTAS EN LA DONACIÓN PICASSO 1970” # En febrero de 1970, Picasso donó a la ciudad de Barcelona, en memoria de su amigo Jaume Sabartés, todas las obras que había dejado en el domicilio familiar al irse de París. “OTHER ARTISTS IN THE 1970 PICASSO DONATION” ›› In February 1970 Picasso donated a number of works to the city of Barcelona in memory of his friend Jaume Sabartés. These works were all pieces he had left with his family when he moved to Paris. FIESTAS DE GRÀCIA El emblemático barrio barcelonés de Gràcia celebra, del 15 al 21 de agosto, su “semana grande”. Las Fiestas de Gràcia concentran durante siete días todo tipo de actividades lúdicas y culturales. Todas las calles del barrio se engalanan para buscar el triunfo a la mejor decorada. También hay concursos de balcones mejor engalanados. FIESTAS DE LA MERCÈ La Mercè es la fiesta mayor de Barcelona desde 1871. Se celebra todos los años el 24 de septiembre. Se trata de la gran fiesta de los barceloneses en honor de su patrona. Paseando por la ciudad # Barrio Gótico

# El Barrio Gótico comprende lo que antiguamente

se llamaba barrio de la catedral. Aquí se encuentran los grandes edificios góticos que señalan el apogeo de la ciudad y su cultura en la Edad Media. También se conservan los restos de las antiguas fortificaciones y palacios que fundaron los romanos sobre el Mons Taber, como el templo dedicado a Augusto y las murallas. Nuestro itinerario empieza en la Plaça Nova. 1 # Portal del Bisbe Flanqueado por dos torres cilíndricas de la antigua muralla romana, al lado del actual Palacio Episcopal. 2 # Palacio Episcopal Calle del Bisbe Irurita. Edificado a finales del siglo XII y principios del XIII. 3 # Plaça de Sant Felip Neri (Pasado el Palacio Episcopal a la derecha). Uno de los rincones más poéticos de la ciudad. 4 # Casa del Arcediano o casa de l´Ardiaca Carrer de Santa Llúcia. Fue levantada sobre las murallas romanas, como residencia, en el siglo XV, del arcediano de la catedral. Es notable el patio tipo claustro, que centra una fuente gótica. 5 # Interior de la catedral Tres naves de crucero y veintinueve capillas laterales, en una de las cuales, la del Santísimo, se venera el Cristo de Lepanto. Es de admirar: El coro de tallas medievales y renacentistas, el Altar Mayor y la cripta de Santa Eulalia. 6 # Claustros de la catedral Bellísimo jardín central de palmeras y magnolias. Interesantes verjas de hierro forjado. 7 # Puerta de la Piedad Acceso al claustro de la catedral. En el tímpano destaca una Piedad labrada en madera, de escuela flamenca. 8 # Casa de los Canónigos o dels Canonges Edificio gótico del siglo XIV, restaurado. Un paso superior cruza la calle del Bisbe Irurita. 9 # Centre Excursionista de Catalunya Carrer Paradís,10. En su interior se conservan las columnas romanas que pertenecieron al templo dedicado a Augusto.

The great gothic buildings which marked the high point of the city and its culture during the Middle Ages are to be found here. Here Likewise, are the remains of the ancient fortified walls and palaces built by the Romans on the “Mons Taber” such as, the temple dedicatet to Augustus. Our itinerary begins in the Plaça Nova. 1 » Portal del Bisbe Flanked by two round towers from the ancient Roman wall and on one side of the present Bishop´s Palace. 2 » Palace Episcopal (Bishop´s Palace) Carrer del Bisbe Irurita. Built at the end of the 12th Century and the beginning of the 13th Century. 3 » Plaça de Sant Felip Neri (Past the Bishop´s Palace and to the right). One of the most lyrical places of the city. 4 » Casa de l´Ardiaca Carrer de Santa Llúcia. Built on the Roman walls during the 15th Century as a residence for the Archdeacon of the Cathedral. The cloister- type patio with is gothic fountain is noteworthy. 5 » Interior of the Cathedral Three cruciform aisles and twenty- nine lateral chapels in one of which Cristo de Lepanto is venerated. Noteworthy: The choirstall which features both medieval and rennaissance elements.

11 » Casa de la Ciutat or City Hall Next to the Neo-Classical facade (19th Century) there is a lateral gothic facade (14th Century) and some levely steps. “Saló de Cròniques” with paintings by Josep Ma. Sert and the historical “Saló de Cent”. 12 » Ancient medieval synagogue 13 » Plaça del Rei This is the most handsome section of ancient Barcelona. It a square outlined by gothic buildings toped by the facade of the former main Royal Palace and its watchtower- a true skycraper for the 16th Century. 14 » Casa Clariana-Padellas Houses the “Museu d´Història de la Ciutat” (See Museums). 15 » Palau de Lloctinent Ghotic building embellished with rennaissance elements. The craftmanship of the stairways in worth noting. 16 » Casa de la Pia Almoina or de la Canonja Plaça de la Seu, beside the Cathedral. Forner seat of charitable foundation set up at the beginning of the 11th Century. 17 » Plaça de Ramon Berenguer el Gran Equestrian statue in bronze representing Ramon Berenguer III.

# La Rambla, que se extiende entre la Plaça de

Catalunya y el puerto, fue durante siglos el corazón de la ciudad, y aún hoy día sigue siendo la vía más representativa, popular y cosmopolita de la ciudad. Nuestro itinerario comienza en la cabecera de la Rambla, donde ésta se abre a la Pl. de Catalunya. 1 # Font de Canaletes. Fuente de hierro del siglo XIX. Uno de los símbolos de la ciudad. 2 # Iglesia de Belén. En la esquina con la calle del Carme. Antigua iglesia de los jesuitas. Interior de estilo gótico catalán. 3 # Palau Moja. Situado enfrente de la iglesia de Belén. Casa señorial de principios del siglo XVIII.

4 # Palau de la Virreina. (Rambla, 99) Uno de los edificios más suntuosos de La Rambla. En los bajos hay una Oficina de información Cultural. 5 # Mercado de Sant Josep o de la “Boqueria”. Construcción de hierro que alberga uno de los mercados de alimentación más típicos y tradicionales. 6 # Pla de la Boqueria. Recibe este nombre el llano comprendido entre la calle Hospital y la calle de la Boquería. En el suelo hay un pavimento de Joan Miró. 7 # Gran Teatro del Liceo. Es uno de los edificios emblemáticos de la Rambla. Inagurado en 1847, se ha convertido en uno de los primeros escenarios líricos del mundo. 8 # Palau Güell. (Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 3) Obra de Antonio Gaudí, construida como residencia en Barcelona del conde Güell. 9 # Plaça Reial. Plaza porticada en edificios uniformes. Fuente de hierro en el centro. Las farolas son obra de Gaudí. 10 # Museo de Cera. Edificio construido en 1867 forma parte del Patrimonio Arquitectónico Nacional. 11 # Reials Drassanes. Al final de la Rambla se conservan las mayores y más completas atarazanas medievales que existen en la actualidad. En el interior se aloja el Museu Marítim de Barcelona.

» “Eixample” means extension and here it refers to the urban expansion of the city which was carried out in the second half of the 19th Century according tho the plans drawn by Ildefons Cerdà. The “Eixample”, which is divided into two by the Rambla de Catalunya, is of greatest interesnt from the point of view of “Modernism”on the right and it is there that we have routed our itinerary. he Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site, declared World Heritage by the UNESCO, is considered one of the foremost works of Modernisme, the Catalan Art Nouveau. Gaudí

Antoni Gaudí Cornet # Nació en Reus, en el 1852. Realizó los estudios de arquitectura en la Escuela Provincial de Arquitectura de Barcelona. Antes de finalizar sus estudios, Gaudí colabora con el arquitecto Josep Fontseré en el proyecto del Parque de la Ciudadela. En 1878 gana por concurso la realización de un proyecto de farolas para la Plaça Reial de Barcelona, existentes en la actualidad. Entre 1883 y 1926, Gaudí deja a esta ciudad una muestra de obras de muy distinta índole. ›› Was born in Reus in 1852. He studied architecture in Barcelona Provincial School of Architecture. Before finishing his studies he collaborated with Josep Fontseré, architect, in the Citadella Park project. In 1878 he won a contest to carry out a street lights project for Barcelona´s Plaza Real. Those street ligths still exist. Between 1883 and 1926 Gaudí left in Barcelona a sample of ten different and varied works.

La diferencia básica entre ambas opciones es que en la primera el punto de partida es Barcelona Parc del Fòrum y hasta no llegar a la población de Badalona, a 5 km de distancia, no disponemos de playas de fácil acceso para el baño, ya que este tramo es zona de naves industriales. Mientras que en la Ruta 2, tomamos el tren y bajamos directamente en la estación de Badalona para iniciar nuestra ruta en bicicleta o a pie junto al mar.

The main difference between the options is that the point of departure of the first is Barcelona Parc del Fòrum. There are no beaches for swimming within easy reach until reaching Badalona, 5 km down the path, because this an industrial estate. Using Route 2, catch the train to Badalona station, which is where our cycle or walking route starts next to the sea.

Toma como referencia la silueta de “Las Tres Chimeneas”, cruzarás la desembocadura del río Besos por un puente. A partir de aquí puedes ir por la calzada o por la izquierda, en camino de tierra, hasta llegar a “Las Tres Chimeneas” (Foto 2). A unos 400 metros verás el puerto deportivo de Badalona, entra y crúzalo por la calzada junto a las embarcaciones.

Use the silhouette of “The Three Chimneys” as your guide (Photo 2). You will cross over the mouth of the Besos river on a bridge. You can use the paved road from hereon in, or the dirt path to the left until reaching “The Three Chimneys”. About 400 metres later you will see Badalona marina. Enter and cross through the marina using the road closest to the ships.

Al salir del puerto (Av. d’Eduard Maristany ), a unos 300 metros, (Supermercado Mercadona) se hallan unos bloques de apartamentos en primera línea de playa. Gira a la derecha, por una ligera rampa, y habrás llegado al Paseo Marítimo de Badalona.

When you leave the marina (Ave. d’Eduard Maristany), there are some apartment buildings just in front of the beach about 300 metres down (Mercadona supermarket). Turn right using the lightweight ramp, and you will have arrived at Badalona waterfront.

Incorpórate al carril bici y pasarás por delante del “Pont del Petroli” (Foto 3), que entra al mar y está presidido por una figura de bronce con cuerpo de mono y cara humana... y te preguntarás, ¿qué significa? Es la imagen representada en la etiqueta de las botellas del licor Anís del Mono (Foto 4). La versión más popular de su origen cuenta que los hermanos Bosch, creadores de este famoso anisado, querían desacreditar la teoría de Charles Darwin en su libro “El origen de las especies". Por lo que caricaturizaron en 1.870 el mono de la etiqueta con un rostro muy parecido al del afamado científico.

Get onto the bicycle path, and you will pass by the Pont del Petroli bridge (Photo 3), which goes into the sea, and a bronze figure with the body of a monkey and a human head... and ask yourself “What is that about?” It is the image on the label of Anís del Mono liqueur bottles (Photo 4). The most popular version of the story goes something like this: the Bosch brothers, the creators of this famous anise product, wanted to discredit Charles Darwin’s theory in “The Origin of the Species”. That’s why they caricatured him as a monkey on the label in 1870, making the monkey’s face very similar to that of the famous scientist.

Enfrente tenemos la comercial calle del Mar y las terrazas del Paseo de la Rambla. En este tramo podremos observar las magníficas casas modernistas que presiden la zona antigua del Paseo Marítimo. Seguimos nuestro recorrido hasta llegar a la estación de tren de Mongat que nos queda a la izquierda, por el camino de tierra paralelo al mar conocido como “Cami Ral”, hasta hallar un pequeño montículo sembrado de hierba (Foto 6). Podemos subir a lo alto para contemplar la costa que nos queda por delante y disfrutar de las vistas.

Continue on to Montgat train station on the left, then on the dirt path, known as “Camí Ral”, which lays parallel to the sea, until coming upon a small grass-covered knoll (Photo 6). A trip to the top offers the chance to contemplate and soak up the coastal views that lay before you.

Justo pasado el montículo y al salir de una curva, aparece frente a nosotros un mosaico de tejadillos y casetas de baño con un aire decadente pero auténtico, ya que mantiene la esencia de lo que fue, en la década de los 60, una de las zonas de baño predilecta del proletariado barcelonés .

Just after the hill and around a bend, a mosaic of awnings and stalls appear with an authentic and decadent ambiance. This place has preserved the essence of what it once was the 1960s, when Barcelona’s working class preferred to come here for bathing and swimming.

Dejamos Mongat atrás y nos dirigimos a nuestra siguiente etapa, El Masnou. Lo primero a la vista es el puerto deportivo. Lo más recomendable es cruzarlo por el interior que alberga una gran oferta gastronómica, para todo tipo de gustos y bolsillos. Esta sería una alternativa para comer, pero si te apetece más hacer el aperitivo o picar a pie de playa, todo el litoral esta salpicado de “chiringuitos” donde tomar tapas, raciones, bocadillos e incluso platos combinados. Y si lo que prefieres es llegar al final de la etapa para comer, en Premià de Mar, te aconsejamos que te dirijas hacia el Club Náutico, (Foto 7), ubicado después de la estación, y disfrutes de un buen baño para refrescarte y de una buena comida en el restaurante “Cal Tito”. Por la tarde también es muy agradable pasear por el casco antiguo de Premià de Mar y la Gran Via de Lluis Companys, uno de los ejes comerciales más dinámicos del Maresme donde degustar un helado, granizado u horchata de la emblemática “La Jijonenca”.

Leaving Montgat behind, the next section on our route is El Masnou. The marina is the first thing that comes into view. Cutting through the inside of marina is highly recommended: it hosts a wide selection of cuisine that can satisfy every taste and budget. This is just one dining option. If you feel more like having an appetiser or snacking on the beach, there are “chiringuitos” (beach bars) peppered along the coastline where you can have tapas, small dishes to share, sandwiches and even a full meal. If you’d prefer to wait until reaching the end of this section of the ride and eat in Premià de Mar, we recommend that you head towards Club Náutico (Photo 7), located just after the station. Enjoy a refreshing swim, and good food at the restaurant Cal Tito. A nice way to spend the afternoon would also be to stroll through Premià de Mar’s old town, as well as down Gran Via de Lluis Companys, one of the busiest business streets in Maresme, and where you can try an ice cream, slushy or horchata from the famous La Jijonenca.

Cada uno puede organizar la excursión a su aire, pero con el calor del verano, lo más recomendable es coger el tren hasta la playa escogida y volver al atardecer, a pie o en bicicleta, hasta Barcelona. También es posible aprovechar cualquiera de las estaciones que se encuentran a la vuelta para acortar camino. Si regresas a pie te aconsejamos tomar el tren en estas estaciones. Mongat , Mongat Nord o Badalona, ya que a partir de Badalona, el recorrido pasa por zonas industriales y más solitarias. You can always plan your excursion the way you like it, but with the summer heat, it is a good idea to take the train to the chosen beach and come back to Barcelona on foot or by bicycle at dusk. You can also catch the train at any of the stations along the way when coming back to shorten the trek. If you return on foot, we suggest you catch the train at one of these stations: Montgat, Montgat Nord, or Badalona. Between Badalona and Barcelona, the route passes through emptier industrial areas.
