FIRA DE SANTA LLÚCIA 29/11 al 23/12 FIRA SAGRADA FAMÍLIA 30/11 al 28/12 TIÓ DE NADAL En el día de la Inmaculada Concepción, el 8 de diciembre, se empieza a dar de comer cada noche a un tronco de madera, y se tapa normalmente con una manta para que no pase frío durante la noche. El día de Navidad se pone el Tió en el fuego y, a base de arremeterle golpes de bastón, se van sacando chucherías y turrones para los niños.
MERCADILLOS NAVIDEÑOS La Fira de Santa Llúcia en la ciudad de Barcelona es un mercadillo navideño con más de 300 puestos que atrae a decenas de miles de visitantes. No hay barcelonés que no haya acudido a ella en busca de alguna figurita de belén, árbol o adorno. Se ubica en la Plaza de La Catedral y alrededores. También, en la capital catalana, a la sombra de la Sagrada Familia, se reúne la tradicional oferta navideña. Por último, los belenes vivientes, la costumbre de representar el Nacimiento de Jesús reproduciéndolo de forma escénica a través de personajes vivos y figuras plásticas. ›› CHRISTMAS MARKET The “Fira de Santa Llúcia” (Fair of Saint Lucia) in the city of Barcelona is an outdoor Christmas market with more than 300 stands that attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year. There is not a single Barcelona native who has not gone there is search of a nativity scene figure, a Christmas tree or an ornament. It is held in the Cathedral Square and its surroundings. Another major Christmas fair in Barcelona is located in the shadow of the Sagrada Familia. We cannot fail to mention the live nativity scenes, the tradition of portraying Jesus’ birth through a blend of live and plastic figures; the oldest live nativity scene is in the town of Corbera de Llobregat. Finally, Catalan nativity scenes include a unique figure of their own, the “caganer” (a squatting, defecating figure), which dates back to the 18th century.
›› TIÓ DE NADAL (CHRISTMAS UNCLE) Starting on the feast day of the Immaculate Conception, the 8th of December, every night families begin to “feed” a tree trunk decorated with a face on one end, which is usually covered with a blanket so it doesn’t get cold at night. On Christmas Day, the wooden “uncle” is put in the fire and after being hit it with a cane, it produces sweets and nougats for the children.

# El Barrio Gótico comprende lo que antiguamente
se llamaba barrio de la catedral. Aquí se encuentran los grandes edificios góticos que señalan el apogeo de la ciudad y su cultura en la Edad Media. También se conservan los restos de las antiguas fortificaciones y palacios que fundaron los romanos sobre el Mons Taber, como el templo dedicado a Augusto y las murallas. Nuestro itinerario empieza en la Plaça Nova. 1 # Portal del Bisbe Flanqueado por dos torres cilíndricas de la antigua muralla romana, al lado del actual Palacio Episcopal. 2 # Palacio Episcopal Calle del Bisbe Irurita. Edificado a finales del siglo XII y principios del XIII. 3 # Plaça de Sant Felip Neri (Pasado el Palacio Episcopal a la derecha). Uno de los rincones más poéticos de la ciudad. 4 # Casa del Arcediano o casa de l´Ardiaca Carrer de Santa Llúcia. Fue levantada sobre las murallas romanas, como residencia, en el siglo XV, del arcediano de la catedral. The great gothic buildings which marked the high point of the city and its culture during the Middle Ages are to be found here. Here Likewise, are the remains of the ancient fortified walls and palaces built by the Romans on the “Mons Taber” such as, the temple dedicatet to Augustus. Our itinerary begins in the Plaça Nova. 1 » Portal del Bisbe Flanked by two round towers from the ancient Roman wall and on one side of the present Bishop´s Palace. 2 » Palace Episcopal (Bishop´s Palace) Carrer del Bisbe Irurita. Built at the end of the 12th Century and the beginning of the 13th Century. 3 » Plaça de Sant Felip Neri (Past the Bishop´s Palace and to the right). Uno de los símbolos de la ciudad. 2 # Iglesia de Belén. En la esquina con la calle del Carme. Antigua iglesia de los jesuitas. Interior de estilo gótico catalán. 3 # Palau Moja. Situado enfrente de la iglesia de Belén. Casa señorial de principios del siglo XVIII.

Gaudí
Antoni Gaudí Cornet # Nació en Reus, en el 1852. Realizó los estudios de arquitectura en la Escuela Provincial de Arquitectura de Barcelona. Antes de finalizar sus estudios, Gaudí colabora con el arquitecto Josep Fontseré en el proyecto del Parque de la Ciudadela. En 1878 gana por concurso la realización de un proyecto de farolas para la Plaça Reial de Barcelona, existentes en la actualidad. Entre 1883 y 1926, Gaudí deja a esta ciudad una muestra de obras de muy distinta índole. ›› Was born in Reus in 1852. He studied architecture in Barcelona Provincial School of Architecture. Before finishing his studies he collaborated with Josep Fontseré, architect, in the Citadella Park project. In 1878 he won a contest to carry out a street lights project for Barcelona´s Plaza Real. Those street ligths still exist. Between 1883 and 1926 Gaudí left in Barcelona a sample of ten different and varied works.

La Verja forjada en hierro es un Dragón alado que representa a Ladón, dragón mitológico vencido por Hércules. La forma del Dragón coincide un determinado día del año con la posición de las estrellas de su constelación. ›› Two pavilions with big fence wich was the entrance to the old leisure time house property of Eusebio Güell family. Eusebio Güell was Gaudi´s protector.The forged iron gate is a representation of Ladon, a mythological winged dragon which was beaten by Hercules. # Esta es la obra de mayor envergadura, en extensión que Gaudí realizó en Barcelona. Se trata de una zona de 20 hectáreas, cuyo objetivo inicial era convertirla en una ciudad -jardín al estilo inglés. En el interior del parque se encuentra la Casa-Museo , donde vivió Gaudí antes de trasladarse a la Sagrada Familia. Cabe destacar el banco ondulado del “trencadís” en el que hizo sentar a un obrero para tomar las medidas y proyectarlo. ›› This is Gaudi´s largest work in Barcelona. Escudella i carn d’olla "Escudella i carn d'olla" La protagonista en la comida navideña. Si algo se mantiene inmutable en la gastronomía catalana es la “escudella i carn d’olla”, que viene referido a un 2x1 contundente y muy navideño: una sopa de entrante, y de segundo, garbanzos acompañados de verdura y carne. Sin que falten los “galets” y la “pilota”, que aportan personalidad al primer plato.
The highlight of the Christmas meal. If there is to be one permanent fixture of Catalan cuisine, it is the “escudella i carn d’olla”. This is a filling 2-in-1 which is traditionally eaten at Christmas, consisting of a starter of soup and a main dish of chickpeas with meat and vegetables. And let’s not forget about the “galets” and the “pilota”, which provide a dash of personality to the first dish.

¿Qué lleva la ‘escudella i carn d’olla’? Los famosos ‘galets’ Son pasta de trigo en forma de caracol grande que se cuece con el caldo resultante de hervir garbanzos, verduras y carne de forma amorosa y lenta. Constituye el primer plato de este completo tradicional de la comida navideña. No apto para vegetarianos Además de los garbanzos, añadiremos hueso de jamón, panceta, espinazo, morro, oreja o pies de cerdo, además de butifarra blanca y negra… Esto es lo que constituye el segundo plato junto a las verduras. Sinfonía vegetal Zanahorias, puerros, nabos, coles cebollas, apio y patatas se encargan de dar sabor a esta hermosa ópera gastronómica. La ‘pilota’ Son una especie de albóndigas de carne de ternera y cerdo picada, condimentadas con ajo, perejil, huevo batido, sal y pimienta, rebozadas en miga de pan y cocidas con el resto de los ingredientes.
