O MAGICAL FOUNTAIN FOUNTAINS OF MONTJUÏC

Cuando los trabajos para la gran Exposición Universal de 1929 estaban ya muy adelantados, sus organizadores consideraron que faltaba "alguna cosa" especial que la hiciera diferente. Fue entonces cuando Carlos Buigas presentó su proyecto para una "obra colosal, atrevida y costosa". El 18 de junio de 1928, el joven ingeniero expuso delante del Comité Ejecutivo de la Exposición 460 planos y 70 grandes dibujos en los que había dado vida a los sueños que su técnica era capaz de albergar. El proyecto sorprendió y encandiló hasta el punto de ser tachado de locura por algunos de los asistentes. La mayor fuente ornamental de Barcelona nos ofrece un espectáculo que combina la música, el movimiento del agua y los juegos de luces de colores con más de 50 variantes.

When construction for the 1929 Barcelona World’s Fair was already well underway, its organisers realised that “something special” was missing that would make it stand out. That was when Carlos Buigas submitted his designs for a “colossal, bold and costly project”. On the 18th of June 1928, the young engineer showed the Fair’s Executive Committee 460 blueprints and 70 large drawings in which he brought to life the dreams that his technical expertise was able to harbour. The project astonished and dazzled the committee so much that it was even written off as a folly by some of its members. The largest ornamental fountain in Barcelona offers a show that combines music, the movement of the water and the play of more than 50 varieties of coloured lights..

Fiestas tradicionales Traditional festivals

PANALLETS Y CASTAÑAS El otoño y el invierno traen consigo en Barcelona y alrededores algunas fiestas de carácter popular y larga tradición que no hay que perderse. El 1 de noviembre se celebra la festividad de Todos los Santos, y con ella una de las costumbres más características, “La Castanyada”, una fiesta popular en la que la castaña es la gran protagonista como producto representativo del otoño. Se puede degustar asada junto a otros productos gastronómicos como los boniatos, el vino dulce o los “panellets”, pequeños dulces de diversas formas hechos esencialmente de mazapán. Este dulce, quizá el más popular y famoso del país, inunda las

calles y los hogares durante esta festividad internacional. A grandes rasgos se trata de modelar bolas a base de almendras tostadas en polvo y boniato hervido con su correspondiente yema de huevo y azúcar. Se decoran con piñones u otros ingredientes y… al horno.

›› PANALLETS Y CASTAÑAS The autumn and winter bring to Barcelona and its environs numerous popular, long-standing festivals that you just cannot miss. All Saints’ Day is celebrated on the 1st of November, and with it one of the most characteristic markers of autumn, “La Castanyada”, a popular festival featuring chestnuts, an important autumn crop. They can be eaten roasted along with other delectable goods like sweet potatoes, sweet wine and “panellets”, tiny sweets in endless shapes made mainly of marzipan. This sweet, perhaps the most popular and famous in the country, floods streets and homes during this international festivity. Broadly, it is the result of modelling balls of powdered roasted almonds with boiled sweet potato and egg yolk and sugar. They are decorated with pinions or other ingredients and put into the oven.

# El Barrio Gótico comprende lo que antiguamente

se llamaba barrio de la catedral. Aquí se encuentran los grandes edificios góticos que señalan el apogeo de la ciudad y su cultura en la Edad Media. También se conservan los restos de las antiguas fortificaciones y palacios que fundaron los romanos sobre el Mons Taber, como el templo dedicado a Augusto y las murallas. Nuestro itinerario empieza en la Plaça Nova. 1 # Portal del Bisbe Flanqueado por dos torres cilíndricas de la antigua muralla romana, al lado del actual Palacio Episcopal. 2 # Palacio Episcopal Calle del Bisbe Irurita. Edificado a finales del siglo XII y principios del XIII. 3 # Plaça de Sant Felip Neri (Pasado el Palacio Episcopal a la derecha). Uno de los rincones más poéticos de la ciudad. 4 # Casa del Arcediano o casa de l´Ardiaca Carrer de Santa Llúcia. Fue levantada sobre las murallas romanas, como residencia, en el siglo XV, del arcediano de la catedral. Es notable el patio tipo claustro, que centra una fuente gótica. 5 # Interior de la catedral Tres naves de crucero y veintinueve capillas laterales, en una de las cuales, la del Santísimo, se venera el Cristo de Lepanto. Es de admirar: El coro de tallas medievales y renacentistas, el Altar Mayor y la cripta de Santa Eulalia. 6 # Claustros de la catedral Bellísimo jardín central de palmeras y magnolias. Interesantes verjas de hierro forjado. 7 # Puerta de la Piedad Acceso al claustro de la catedral. En el tímpano destaca una Piedad labrada en madera, de escuela flamenca. 8 # Casa de los Canónigos o dels Canonges Edificio gótico del siglo XIV, restaurado. Un paso superior cruza la calle del Bisbe Irurita. 9 # Centre Excursionista de Catalunya Carrer Paradís,10. En su interior se conservan las columnas romanas que pertenecieron al templo dedicado a Augusto.

The great gothic buildings which marked the high point of the city and its culture during the Middle Ages are to be found here. Here Likewise, are the remains of the ancient fortified walls and palaces built by the Romans on the “Mons Taber” such as, the temple dedicatet to Augustus. The cloister- type patio with is gothic fountain is noteworthy. 5 » Interior of the Cathedral Three cruciform aisles and twenty- nine lateral chapels in one of which Cristo de Lepanto is venerated. Noteworthy: The choirstall which features both medieval and rennaissance elements.

It a square outlined by gothic buildings toped by the facade of the former main Royal Palace and its watchtower- a true skycraper for the 16th Century. 14 » Casa Clariana-Padellas Houses the “Museu d´Història de la Ciutat” (See Museums). 15 » Palau de Lloctinent Ghotic building embellished with rennaissance elements. The craftmanship of the stairways in worth noting. 16 » Casa de la Pia Almoina or de la Canonja Plaça de la Seu, beside the Cathedral. Forner seat of charitable foundation set up at the beginning of the 11th Century. 17 » Plaça de Ramon Berenguer el Gran Equestrian statue in bronze representing Ramon Berenguer III.

# Fue levantada sobre las murallas romanas en el siglo XII como residencia para albergar a los arcedianos.

* Arcediano o Archidiácono; es el superior de los diáconos y máximo responsable de la catedral de Barcelona, desde su administración a despachar con el obispo. > Es notable el patio tipo claustro, que centra una fuente gótica. > En el siglo XVI se hizo una importante reforma con estructura de Palacete Gótico. > En el siglo XIX el edificio fue desamortizado, pasando a manos de una familia burguesa. *Desamortizado : La desamortización de Mendizabal llevada a cabo entre los siglos XVIII y XIX, por la que se expropiaban bienes de la Iglesia que no se podían vender ni ceder pasando a subasta pública. > Sede del Colegio de abogados desde 1895. A raíz de la adquisición se encargaron las obras de reforma al arquitecto Lluís Domenech i Montaner, que dio diferentes toques modernistas al edificio. Uno de ellos el polémico buzón de la entrada, esculpido en mármol blanco por Alfons Juyo. Causo mucha controversia entre los letrados de la época por su simbología y relación con la justicia; cinco golondrinas, una tortuga, 7 hojas de hiedra y el escudo del Colegio de Abogados de Barcelona. Interpretación: Golondrinas = Lo alto que vuela la justicia La Hiedra = La burocracia de la justicia y su enrevesado proceso La Tortuga = La lentitud de la justicia > Es curioso ver a algunos turistas, principalmente asiáticos como acarician la tortuga, porque les traerá suerte. Supongo que es por el simbolismo que tiene la tortuga en muchas tradiciones orientales. China = Sabiduria y longevidad > En 1920 pasa a ser propiedad del Ayuntamiento y se ubica en 1921 el Archivo Histórico de la Ciudad. > En 1970 la Casa de l’Ardiaca se remodelo para unirla a la Casa del Degá, fruto de esta reforma quedo el aspecto actual del patio central.

¿ Sabias qué? … El 4 de Junio festividad del “Corpus Christi”, la fuente gótica del patio luce sus mejores galas para hacer bailar un huevo sobre sus chorro de agua, es … “L’Ou com balla”. Esta tradición se remonta a 1637 y se inicio en la Catedral de Barcelona, en la actualidad podemos verlo en distintas iglesias de la ciudad.

As a result of the acquisition, the renovation works were entrusted to the architect, Lluís Domenech i Montaner, who added various modernist touches to the building. One of these is the controversial letterbox, sculpted in white marble by Alfons Juyo. # Uno delos rincones más poéticos de la ciudad.

Pasado el Palacio Episcopal a la derecha, por la calle Montjuïc del Bisbe. > Tras los bombardeos sufridos en la Guerra Civil Española, el Barrio gótico gano espacios de los edificios derribados por las bombas, aprovechando los solares para crear un nuevo entorno. Uno de estos fue la Plaza de Sant Felip Neri, el arquitecto Adolf Florensa creo una nueva plaza. > En la plaza esta ubicada la Casa del Gremio de Zapateros de Barcelona, de fachada renacentista y construida en 1585. También se encuentra la Casa del Gremio de Caldereros (*Calderers: Artesanos que hacían calderos y perolas.) > La plaza esta presidida por una fuente gótica octogonal, obra del arquitecto Joaquim Ros de Ramis. > La iglesia de Sant Felip Neri: - És una de las pocas de estilo Barroco en Barcelona. - Se construyo en 1721, en una planta y con capillas laterales. - Destacan los altares de San Felip Neri y San Raiumundo de Peñafort, de estilos barroco i neoclásico. - Podemos encontrar dos cuadros del pintor Joan Llimona (1860-1926), hermano del escultor Josep Llimona.

Curiosidades … El antiguo cementerio medieval se encontraba en esta plaza y fue destruido tras uno de los bombardeos durante la guerra civil.

… El 30 de enero de 1938 se llevo a cabo el bombardeo que más castigo el barrio Gótico, varios edificios se vieron afectados por la caída de las bombas en las calles; Petrixol, Avinyo, de la Palla o la Plaza de Sant Felip Neri, donde ocurrió una de esas lamentables injusticias que las guerras provocan. En el Oratorio de la Iglesia de Sant Felip Neri había una veintena de niños refugiados de la guerra que se protegieron junto a otros vecinos en el subterráneo de la sacristía, un obús impacto el edificio falleciendo todos los que se habían refugiado. … Si os detenéis frente la puerta principal de la iglesia, observareis las marcas de metralla de las bombas en sus paredes, nunca se han restaurado para dejar testimonio de lo ocurrido en esta Plaza. … Para los cinéfilos; recordáis a Jean – Batiste Grenouille en la película “El Perfume”, esta recorriendo las calles de los alrededores de la catedral, siguiendo las fragancias de una vendedora de ciruelas y la sigue hasta la Plaza de Sant Felip Neri, donde acaba asesinándola. … Los robos de las estatuas; en 1962 se corono la fuente con una estatuilla del santo, que fue robada al cabo de un año. Más tarde se substituyo por una escultura de un estudiante con un libro bajo el brazo, obra del escultor Josep Miret, que también fue substraída. Generalmente la encontraremos llena de niños jugando, pertenecen a la escuela Sant Felip Neri, ubicada en la misma plaza y fundada en 1959 por el padre Serafí Alemany Esteve.

Walking in the city # Gothic Quarter 5 # Sant Filip Neri Square ›› One of the most poetic corners of the city. Past the Episcopal Palace on the right, via calle Montjuïc del Bisbe. > After the bombings suffered in the Gothic quarter during the Spanish Civil War, the space gained from the buildings demolished by the bombs was utilised to create a new environment. One of these was Sant Felip Neri Square, which was subsequently redesigned by the architect, Adolf Florensa. > The square is home to the Shoemakers’ Guild of Barcelona, which was built in 1585 and boasts a Renaissance façade. The Caldereros’ guild house is also found here (*Caldereros: Craftsmen who forged cooking pots and saucepans).

The theft of the statues: in 1962, the fountain was crowned with a statuette of the saint, which was stolen within a year. Interesting Facts ... The old medieval cemetery used to be located in the square but was destroyed after a bombing during the Spanish Civil War. ….. On 30 January 1938, the Gothic quarter experienced the most devastating bombing of the entire Civil War. Several buildings were damaged by the dropping of bombs in the streets; Petrixol, Avinyo, de la Palla and Sant Felip Neri square, where one of those awful injustices that are caused by wars took place. In the Oratory of Sant Felip Neri Church, where twenty child war refugees were sheltered along with other locals in the basement of the sacristy, a bombshell was dropped on the building, killing all those inside. ….. If you stop in front of the church’s main door, you will see the marks from the bomb shrapnel on the walls. They were never restored in order to pay testament to what happened in this square. ….. Nuestro itinerario comienza en la cabecera de la Rambla, donde ésta se abre a la Pl. de Catalunya. 1 # Font de Canaletes. Fuente de hierro del siglo XIX. Uno de los símbolos de la ciudad. 2 # Iglesia de Belén. En la esquina con la calle del Carme. Antigua iglesia de los jesuitas. Interior de estilo gótico catalán. 3 # Palau Moja. Situado enfrente de la iglesia de Belén. Casa señorial de principios del siglo XVIII.

4 # Palau de la Virreina. (Rambla, 99) Uno de los edificios más suntuosos de La Rambla. En los bajos hay una Oficina de información Cultural. 5 # Mercado de Sant Josep o de la “Boqueria”. Construcción de hierro que alberga uno de los mercados de alimentación más típicos y tradicionales. 6 # Pla de la Boqueria. » “Eixample” means extension and here it refers to the urban expansion of the city which was carried out in the second half of the 19th Century according tho the plans drawn by Ildefons Cerdà. The “Eixample”, which is divided into two by the Rambla de Catalunya, is of greatest interesnt from the point of view of “Modernism”on the right and it is there that we have routed our itinerary. Gaudí

Antoni Gaudí Cornet # Nació en Reus, en el 1852. Realizó los estudios de arquitectura en la Escuela Provincial de Arquitectura de Barcelona. Antes de finalizar sus estudios, Gaudí colabora con el arquitecto Josep Fontseré en el proyecto del Parque de la Ciudadela. En 1878 gana por concurso la realización de un proyecto de farolas para la Plaça Reial de Barcelona, existentes en la actualidad. Entre 1883 y 1926, Gaudí deja a esta ciudad una muestra de obras de muy distinta índole. ›› Was born in Reus in 1852. He studied architecture in Barcelona Provincial School of Architecture. Before finishing his studies he collaborated with Josep Fontseré, architect, in the Citadella Park project. In 1878 he won a contest to carry out a street lights project for Barcelona´s Plaza Real. Those street ligths still exist. Between 1883 and 1926 Gaudí left in Barcelona a sample of ten different and varied works.

# Esta es la obra de mayor envergadura, en extensión que Gaudí realizó en Barcelona. Se trata de una zona de 20 hectáreas, cuyo objetivo inicial era convertirla en una ciudad -jardín al estilo inglés. En el interior del parque se encuentra la Casa-Museo , donde vivió Gaudí antes de trasladarse a la Sagrada Familia. Cabe destacar el banco ondulado del “trencadís” en el que hizo sentar a un obrero para tomar las medidas y proyectarlo. ›› This is Gaudi´s largest work in Barcelona. Del bosque al plato From the forest to the plate Llega el otoño y con él la temporada de setas (bolets), de gran tradición en toda Catalunya. Las setas cobran protagonismo junto a otros productos de temporada como las calabazas, los boniatos, las mermeladas… Miles de aficionados realizan excursiones al bosque para buscar setas, los mercados se llenan de estas pequeñas joyas efímeras que aportan sabor y delicadeza a los platos y muchos restaurantes de Barcelona las ofrecen en sus menús. Entre las especies más conocidas en Catalunya se encuentra el rovelló, el cep, el rosinyol, el ou de reig, el fredolic o la llenega. Recetas caseras hay miles. La cocina catalana tradicional usa tanto las setas frescas, que conviene limpiar con un pincel y trapo humedecido, como las secas, saladas o confitadas. Se usan sobre todo como acompañamiento de guisos de carne, legumbres, arroz o pescado. Entre las recetas más populares se encuentran las patatas con “fredolic”, los revueltos de setas, la ternera con setas o rovellons a la brasa con butifarra.

The autumn is here and with it comes the wild mushroom (bolet) season, a popular tradition in all of Catalonia. In the autumn, wild mushrooms come to the fore along with other seasonal products, including pumpkin, yams and jams. Thousands of aficionados make forays into the forest to search for mushrooms, the markets fill with these tiny, fleeting gems that bring flavour and delicacy to dishes, and many restaurants in Barcelona feature them on their menus. The most famous wild mushrooms in Catalonia are the rovelló (bloody milk cap), the cep (porcini), the rosinyol (chanterelle), the ou de reig (Caesar’s mushroom), the fredolic (Grey Knight mushroom) and the llenega (waxy cap). As for homemade recipes, there are thousands of them. Traditional Catalan cuisine uses both fresh wild mushrooms, which should be cleaned with a bit of water, and dried, salted or candied ones. They are primarily used to accompany meat stews, legumes, rice and fish. Some of the most popular recipes are potatoes with Grey Knight mushrooms, beef with wild mushrooms or grilled bloody milk cap mushrooms with butifarra sausage.
