Real Media Analysis 3

The Clash magazine masthead is usually spread across the top third of the cover. It is bold white typography and remains the same in every issue, this makes it easier for readers to find in shops – they know what they are looking for. This gives the magazine a sense of identity and continuity. Above the masthead are sub-titles “music / fashion / film”, this helps readers to establish the multiple outlets within the magazine. The main image is of Matt Healy, the frontman of The 1975 and spreads across the whole of the front cover of the magazine. This attracts a target audience of predominantly teenagers and young adults that listen to The 1975. This will appeal more to a female audience because Healy is branded as an attractive man to a lot of females. There is a title underneath the image in bold white typography “THE 1975” for people that don’t recognize Matt Healy straight away. Sub-titles to the right of the main image include famous artists such as A$AP Ferg, Wu-Tang Clan and Jackson (presumably referring to an article to do with Michael Jackson). There are also fashion designers and brands such as Henry Holland and Peter Jensen, Smith Westerns and S/S 14 Collections. The artists attract specific target audiences of the featured artists target audiences. There is predominantly fashion designers and brands on the side because this specific issue of Clash is a fashion issue, this is connoted from the sub-title “The Fashion Issue”. There are only two different fonts on the cover. The titles have black outer shadow but other than that the only colour used is white. Clash more often than not only use white typography on purpose, this is so that Clash is distinguishable and easy to find in shops because it is so simple. The cover doesn’t have much text on either so that it is not giving a lot away about the magazine and readers will want to read on to see the features within the magazine. There is also a barcode in the bottom right with a price and a date so readers can see whether it is an in date version and that it is for sale, in this case for £3.99.
