Real Media Analysis 4
NME stick to the same colours and fonts from the front cover on their contents pages. This is to give the magazine a sense of unity, the NME logo is always on the contents in the top section followed by “THIS WEEK” and the date of the issue underneath. This specific issue of the publication was released on the 1st of November 2008. A lot of magazine contents pages will have a thumbnail of the front cover somewhere in the top section of their contents page and a few lines from the editor. NME doesn’t do this, however in every issue of NME magazine there is a band index on the left hand side. The band index’s job is to list every band and artist featured within the magazine and what page they are on, this appeals to these bands’ fans therefore encouraging specific target audiences to read the magazine. NME magazine also always has the same sections of contents on the right side of the contents page as well. There is always “NEWS”, “LIVE!” “FEATURES”, “REVIEWS” and “RADAR”. This gives the magazine continuity; regular readers of the magazine know to expect these sub-headings when they look at the contents page. The main image on the front cover is from an Oasis live show. The image is followed up underneath by a paragraph of text with a drop font. The drop font follows codes and conventions of a lot of magazines, although some do not do it. The paragraph is giving a little taster of what to expect from the Oasis article, Oasis have been put central with an image because of their stature at the time within music. Being one of the biggest bands with the biggest fan bases NME have strategically put them in the middle of the contents page to grab the readers eye and give them added importance. There is also a special offer at the bottom of the page. The offer is advertising subscription to NME magazine for £5.57 a month. The advertisement the phrase “for just £5.57 a month” to emphasise that this is a cheap deal. There is also an image of another magazine cover next to it to maybe show what the next issue entitles or generally showcase NME magazine.
