guide Play your way!

A Message from Our Executive Director

Dear Residents:

As spring approaches, it’s the perfect time to venture outdoors and soak up the sun and fresh air. What better way to do it than to visit one of our 42 parks? Check out our park map on page 86 of this guide and make plans to explore a park that’s new to you.

I’m thrilled to announce plans for a new community center, funded by our capital development budget. The former Batavia Professional Building located at 150 Houston Street will be reimagined into a gathering place with an allinclusive community room, a child care center, a gathering space for active older adults, storage for museum collections, and a new home for Batavia Access Television. The 12,420 square-foot property sits on a half-acre in the heart of the community, adjacent to the Batavia Depot Museum and Riverwalk campus.

This project was inspired by feedback from listening tours, community engagement surveys, and focus groups. This multigenerational facility will serve the needs for a variety of ages. We rolled up our sleeves to develop a plan to meet the recreational needs of Batavia that would be within our means and without the need for additional debt issuance.

In September 2021, we purchased the property for $930,000. After closing costs with credits included, the net amount paid was $907,667. In November 2022, the Batavia Historical Society signed a Donation Agreement with the Park District, donating an initial contribution of $430,000 for collections and museum space at the facility.

Last year, Williams Architects assisted us with the design, architecture, engineering, and planning for the future community center. The design phase began last year and will wrap up this year.

Community center construction will occur in three phases. Phase 1 will bid out this fall, and construction will start at the beginning of 2024. The project is slated for completion at the end of 2026, and we’ll keep you apprised along the way.

MISSION STATEMENT

Committed to providing fun, safe, and innovative open space and recreational opportunities that will enrich the quality of life for our residents.

The Park Board

Your Park Board is composed of five, nonpaid commissioners selected by you to serve varying terms. The Board is primarily a policy-making body that reflects the needs and interests of all taxpayers.

The Park Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St., at 7:00 pm.

Please feel welcome to attend.

• March 21 • April 18 • May 16

We’re also wrapping up our Community Needs Assessment Survey, which will help us continue to address the changing needs of our community. Stay tuned for those results!

All the best,

Patrick J. Callahan President Tara Gray Secretary John Tilmon Vice President Kevin Riley Treasurer Molly Connolly Commissioner

New Puppy Introduction

Puppy ages: 4-8 months

Have you recently added a new furry family member? Congratulations! Get your new addition started on the right paw by learning how to help your puppy adapt to their new family life. You’ll learn how to communicate with your pup in a way they’ll understand. We’ll go over what to do about jumping and nipping, along with learning some of the basic cues like sit and stay. Your puppy will also get a chance for some important, beneficial socialization or playtime with classmates while you watch and learn. It is important to learn when play is appropriate and what to do if it’s not. 3-10 dogs per class (Min. 4 month old & Max. 8 month old).

Puppy Socialization

Puppy ages: 4+ months

Socialization is the key to helping a new puppy grow up happy and healthy. In this class, you will learn how to help properly introduce your puppy to all the new people and things they will encounter in their young lives. Topics covered will include things such as children, items on wheels, medical/vet equipment, and other things that puppies find scary. While your puppies get a chance to interact with each other, we will go over what appropriate play is and what to do if it’s not. 3-8 puppies per class (Min. age 4 months old).

Greetings

Puppy ages: 5+ months

Does your dog jump on people when they come to your house? Do they drag you to meet new people or furry friends on walks? This class is for those overly-friendly dogs that need to learn to control themselves when saying hello! We will practice having your dog sit nicely to be petted and learn to be more calm while meeting strangers and/or their dogs. Note: this class does not focus on dog-to-dog interactions, but questions about this will be answered (3-10 dogs per class).

Loose Leash Walking

Puppy ages: 4+ months

Are you tired of being pulled through the neighborhood by your dog? Does your dog lag behind you or choke themselves pulling ahead of you? If you would like to enjoy walks with your four-legged friend, this class is for you! You will learn techniques to help your dog stay close to your side while walking. In class you will practice these techniques inside and then outside as you perfect them.

Trick Training for Fun

Puppy ages: 6+ months

Join us for an hour of fun with your furry friend! No pressure, no stress, no anxiety. Just fun! This class is all about teaching your dog some fun tricks. And the best part is, we’ll work on whatever tricks you choose! We’ll supply a list to help you choose what you’d like to do, or you can come with some ideas of you own. Anything goes! We’ll spend the hour seeing what our dogs can do and having a blast making it happen (4-8 dogs per class).

Intro to Obedience (Level 2)

Puppy ages: 5+ months

Get your dog started on the right paw with general obedience skills that all dogs (and humans) should know! This class will lay the foundations of training by teaching you, the owner, the principles of dog training, how to easily communicate with your dog, how to increase difficulty of commands once your dog starts to understand them, and much more. We will work on engagement with your dog, teach them the “place” command and begin practicing the foundations for loose leash walking. 4-10 dogs per class. Prerequisite: phone consult

Beginner Obedience (Level 3)

Puppy ages 5+ months

This class will build off of Intro to Obedience, practicing engagement, the “place” command and loose leash walking while also adding in sit-stay, down-stay, and recall. We will work on increasing your dogs’ focus and continue to improve their skills by practicing longer durations of each cue and adding in more distractions. 4-12 dogs per class. Prerequisite: Intro to Obedience (Level 2)

Intermediate Obedience (Level 4)

Puppy ages: 6+ months

This class is for the humans and dogs who have mastered the skills of Intro to Obedience and Beginner Obedience. The trainer will continue to challenge you and your dog by increasing distance and duration on the skills they’ve already learned, plus we will also introduce waiting at doors and manners when meeting new people. 4-10 dogs per class.

Prerequisite: Intro to Obedience (Level 2) and Beginner Obedience (Level 3), or phone consult

Intro to Agility (Level 1)

Puppy ages: 6+ months

For puppies and first-timers! Learn the fundamentals of agility and how to encourage your dog through simple obstacles while developing primary skills, confidence, and enthusiasm. Agility is a great way to bond with your dog and enhance their listening skills while also getting out their extra energy! This class is perfect for those that want to test the water while enjoying fun exercise with their dog. 3-6 dogs per class (dog must be 6+ month old). Prerequisite: Has knowledge of basic obedience, especially sit-stay

Beginner Agility Class (Level 2)

The Story of Hall Quarry Beach

Hall Quarry Beach is an award-winning facility of the Batavia Park District!

Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former stone quarry now owned by the Batavia Park District. It has been used as a swimming facility since 1920. The story began over 150 years ago in 1842, when a limestone quarry was opened on the west end of town and Batavia received the name “Rock City.” By 1860, nine quarries were in operation, and one of these quarries sat on an acre of property along the Fox River. More than 150 men mined limestone from the quarry until it was so deep and wide that water began permeating up through the floor of the site. Soon enough, six ponds were formed that fondly were known as “old swimming holes.”

By 1920, the Quarry was purchased by Frederick Beach. Beach donated the Quarry to Batavia Township, and they converted the six ponds into one swimming area. This area was named the Frederick H. Beach Park and Pool. Fast forward to 1969, when the Batavia Park District formed and the property was then transferred to the Park District and later renamed. Today Hall Quarry Beach features a sand-bottom swimming area covering 60,000 square feet, which includes islands, slides, and a diving area. There is a playground and plenty of picnic tables, as well. Come visit the beach that Batavia built!.

Dance

Dance Class Helpful Tips

Tutu Tote: Dance shoes can be expensive, especially with growing feet! Please consider donating your “Tutu Tight” dance shoes to the “Tutu Tight Tote.” This container will remain in the dance room. When your dance shoes become “Tutu” tight, place them in the tote and hopefully a pair inside will fit your dancer. There is no exchange of money. Simply donate “tight” and hopefully find “just right.”

Dance Attire: Please wear clothing that allows for a full range of motion. No denim is allowed. Most dancers are comfortable in leotards/tights or leggings.

Dance Shoes: Dance shoe requirements are noted for each class. You may wait until the week after class begins (Week No. 2) to purchase shoes in the event that a class is canceled. Although we never want to cancel a class, low enrollment may cause class cancellations.

Visitors: Thank you for respecting our NO VISITORS policy. We love our fan club, but visitors pull a dancer’s focus from the instructor. In addition, students feel uncomfortable to learn with other parents (strangers) in the room. Thank you for your cooperation!

Disney’s “Newsies JR.”

Disney’s “Newsies JR.” is a 60-minute version of the 2012 Broadway musical, based on the 1992 film. Inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City, “Newsies JR.” features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys’ expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what’s right. Including the now-classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” “Newsies JR.” is a timeless story full of spirit and heart.

Program Refund Policy

Refunds will be considered for the following reasons:

• Class Cancellations/Park District Closings; Class Cancellations or Park District Closings will result in a refund that will be mailed to the person who was enrolled in the class unless the participant is a minor, the refund will go to the parent/guardian who signs the registration form. If you wish to apply this refund to another class, you must notify the Park District immediately.

• Refunds 5 Business Days Prior to Class; Refund requests received 5 business days before the first class meeting will be accepted, less a service charge. If application is received less than 5 business days prior to start of program and it causes enrollment to fall below minimum and the spot cannot be filled; no refund will be given.

• Refunds After Start of Program; Refund requests received after the second meeting of the program will not receive a refund with the exception of a written medical excuse prior to completion of the program. Fees will be pro-rated starting with the day the refund form is received in the Park District office. A $5 service charge and program supply costs will be deducted from the amount of refund for each program, including medical reasons. Medical excuses will result in a pro-rated refund based upon the number of classes held prior to the date listed on the physician’s excuse. If program falls below the minimum required and the spot cannot be filled, no refund will be given.

• One-day Program Refunds; (with the exception of Klub Fun) Applications for refunds for one-day programs must be submitted 5 business days prior to class starting in order to receive a refund. Refunds will not be accepted after the class has ended.

• All refunds will be issued in the form of a check when a refund application is approved

before the class starts. Checks are processed by the Batavia Park District front office bi-monthly and sent via mail.

• All refunds applied for are subject to a $5 service charge. Instances where fees are $10 or less, the service charge will be based on 10%.

• Kids’ Club, Klub Fun, New Horizons, and Camp SUN-sational participants are subject to different terms of refund and withdrawal policy. See parents’ manuals or description for more information.

• Please allow two weeks to receive refunds. Refunds will be applied to any outstanding balance owed on any programs or activities.

Inclement Weather Policy

For program and event updates or cancellations, please visit bataviaparks.org/rainout. The umpires or instructors decide the status of play after program starts. They will base their decisions on the field conditions and the likelihood of rain or thunder.

Nonresident Fee Policy

The Batavia Park District residents make a significant contribution to the operation of the park district via property taxes. The boundaries were established with the formation of the park district in 1969. A copy of a map showing the park district boundaries is printed in the brochure and available at the park district office. Persons living outside the park district boundaries may be required to pay an additional fee to register for programs.

Electronic Signature Readers:

Electronic signature readers have been installed, which will eliminate the need for you to complete a paper form every time you register. The electronic reader will capture your signature and confirm that you’ve agreed to the liability waiver and release of all claims. Signatures will stay on file for 12 months, and after that time you will simply stop in to sign the waiver again. If you are a regular phone-in customer, we will need to capture your signature in person in order for you to do subsequent registrations by phone. Online registration will not be affected by this new procedure.

code of conduct

The Batavia Park District is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for participants in recreation programs. Participants are expected to adhere to fair and safe conduct guidelines. These guidelines apply to the safety of participants, the general public, employees, and volunteers of the Batavia Park District.

A safe environment is where participants, staff, volunteers and the general public are free from physical harm. It is anticipated that some participants may require assistance to participate in the recreation program. This assistance may include accommodations, which will assist participants with unusual behaviors in order to maintain a safe environment for all.

The following actions are prohibited at Batavia Park District facilities and parks:

• Hitting, kicking or throwing objects.

• Inappropriate sexual touching.

• Creating a risk of contagion or illness, whether intentional or not.

• Bringing a weapon to a program or activity or acting in a manner which exposes the participant or others to danger.

• Extreme verbal abuse

• Fighting

• Any other unacceptable behavior including inappropriate dress. Any violation of these guidelines may result in: removal of the participant from the activity for a short period of time; removing the participant from the activity for the remainder of the day; suspending the participant for the next program meeting; and suspending the participant for the remainder of the program season.

Have a great class suggestion? Pitch it to the Pros.

Important Information

The Batavia Park District (the “Park District”) is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participant’s safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for the program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in any activities.

You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or adequately skilled for recreational activities. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

Warning of Risk

Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks and dangers may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, lack of safety equipment, inadequate or defective equipment, failure in supervision and instruction or officiating, and premises defects. It is impossible for the Park District to guarantee absolute safety.

Waiver and Release of All Claims and Assumption of Risk

Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in the Program(s), you will be expressly assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with the program(s)/ activity(ies) (including transportation services, when provided).

I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risk of physical injury to participants in the program(s)/activity(ies), and I voluntarily agree to assume the full risk of any injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity that my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with or associated with the program(s)/activity(ies). I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the Park District, including its official, agents, volunteers and employees (hereinafter collectively referred as “Parties”).

I do hereby fully release and forever discharge the parties from any and all claims for injuries, damages, or loss that my minor child/ward or I may have or which may accrue to me to my minor child/ ward in any way associated with the programs(s)/ activity(ies).

I acknowledge I (or my minor child/ward) will abide by local, state and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19, as well as facility/program policies, rules, safety directives, etc. I acknowledge if I (or my minor child/ ward) fail to abide by these, my access to Batavia Park District facilities and programs may be revoked at any time and at the Batavia Park District’s sole discretion. I acknowledge and agree federal, state and local guidelines regarding COVID-19 are subject to change and the Batavia Park District may, at its sole discretion, revoke the effectiveness of this document to manage facility capacity, participation in programming and/or use of facilities as well as safety.

I have read and fully understand the above important information, warning of risk, assumption of risk and waiver and release of all claims. If registering on-line or via fax, my on-line or facsimile signature shall substitute for and have the same legal effect as the original for signature.

I understand that my child/ward or I may be photographed or videotaped while participating in a Park District program.
