letter from the eo
Everything’s Connected The idea that one act can impact many others isn’t new. But BATC recently experienced the principle at the State Capitol in a uniquely personal way. As you know, BATC was deeply involved in the November 2014 elections, with a goal of flipping the House to a majority friendlier to housing. Our success there brought into leadership two very strong supporters— Speaker Kurt Daudt from Isanti and House Majority Leader Joyce Peppin (a former BATC Legislator of the Year) from District 34A (Rogers, Dayton, and parts of Maple Grove) During the 2015 legislative session, the Speaker and Majority Leader have been meeting with Governor Dayton on a regular basis. At one of those meetings in February, the two brought forward to the Governor our sprinkler issue and urged him to give mandate repeal another critical look. Majority Leader Peppin and Speaker Daudt reported that the discussion was spirited. As a result of their energetic meeting, the Governor called BATC’s lobbyist and legal counsel Peter Coyle from Larkin Hoffman
Expenditure Fund elects candidates who are pro housing. That’s why BATC set a target of $700,000 for the 2014 elections, and has an even more ambitious goal for 2016.
David Siegel BATC Executive Director @davidsiegel1 david@batc.org
But that’s not enough either. We need great communications—to industry, to legislators and perhaps most importantly, to the general public through the media. That’s why BATC brought on staff its first Press Secretary in 2014.
OFFICE OF MARK DAYT ON
Even if one has great lobbyists, a powerful Political Action Committee and great communications, it’s still not enough. Successful advocacy today requires an impactful Grassroots Action Network, including a recognized Day at the Capitol. You need to be engaged. This is why BATC has as a major goal in 2015 to build out its Grassroots Action Network. That same interconnectedness can be seen throughout all of BATC’s activities. For

It’s the first time in more than six years of lobbying this issue that our industry got a direct audience with the Governor, despite previous requests, and it happened because everything’s connected. Representatives from BATC and BAM attended to share our concerns. We are now following up with additional meetings. For more than 10 years, BATC has been building its public policy capacity brick by brick and each step is related to another. This is what we mean when we talk about a modern, dynamic advocacy program. It’s not enough to have great lobbyists, which we do. Their power is enhanced when BATC’s Housing First Independent 4

example, Minnesota’s Green Path and the BATC Foundation impact the perception of legislators and the public regarding BATC. And at the Big Night, we honor our Legislator of the Year and Legislative Advocate of the Year. At the Builders and Remodelers Show (BRS), we showcase Housing First, and we are inviting area building inspectors. Everything’s connected!
BUILDERS & REMODELERS SHOW A PRODUCT AND SERVICE EXPO PRESENTED BY:
Understanding, thinking about and maximizing all of these inter-connections requires a broad view of BATC. When we can bring all of the assets of BATC together, when we can connect them, we are powerful on behalf of our members. Your volunteer and staff leadership understands this, and our visit with the Governor is evidence that our strategy is working.

a word from our president
= The First
60 =
The first 60 days on the job as your president have proven once again that serving as the chief elected leader of BATC is a very serious and substantial commitment.
For some organizations the role of president is ceremonial, but for BATC, it’s a humbling opportunity to make a real difference for our members and our industry. My term began with our inaugural dinner at International Market Square. We had record registrations (with some unfortunate fall off due to a snowstorm) and we were treated to the high energy and thoughtful insights of Elliot Eisenberg in the Eisenberg Report. The good news: Elliot reports that 2015 will be an improvement over 2014. Steady—not enough for a special fireworks show, but decent for our industry. We followed that event with our very successful Builder Day on the Hill. Here’s a major fist bump from me to our members who came. Nearly 250 registered for this powerful event, a big increase over last year. In addition, we saw 15 legislators attend our industry reception, including Speaker of the House Kurt Daudt, a great
and common interest communities. I was also privileged to meet with Adam Duininck, newly appointed Chair of the Metropolitan Council. Our Public Policy Chair, John Rask, Executive Officer, David Siegel, Lobbyist Pete Coyle and Public Policy Director James Vagle joined me. We were candid in sharing with Mr. Duininck our concerns regarding the Thrive 2040 plan, Met Council overreach and the future of housing in the Twin Cities.
Chris Contreras BATC President ccontrer@ryland.com
And of course, our lawsuit against the Department of Labor and Industry challenging the new building and energy codes is moving (slowly as these things do) through the courts. We are very pleased that the Minnesota Association of Realtors, Member

Frank Kottschade (North American Realty) joined by NAHB and BAM are each filing Amicus briefs in support of our case.
At Builder Day, our members held some 80 meetings with legislators, telling them the direct impact that regulations and legislation has on our industry. There is simply no substitute for a constituent sitting in the office of a legislator sharing his or her personal story. If you haven’t seen the brief Builder Day on the Hill wrapup video, take a moment to visit the BATC Daily Blog and watch. It will inspire you to come in 2016. And our goal is to grow this event even larger to reflect the fact that home building and remodeling account for some 15 percent of gross domestic product in Minnesota.
Finally, we’re working on a new business relationship with our state organization BAM. BATC Builder Day at the Capitol & Legislative Reception, February 18, 2015 has a long history of lobbying at the state Capitol (the source of most of our legislative and regulatory burden) and unique capacity to engage there directly on behalf of its members. That calls for a restructuring and modernizing of our BATC and BAM agreement. We’ve presented a plan to BAM that we believe is beneficial to all parties, and we’re looking forward to productive negotiations going forward. In the SEE MORE PHOTOS meantime, both organizations are committed that these IN THE GALLERIES ON discussions not spill over to the Capitol, where we’re PAGES 44-45 AND both focused on serving our members. 56-57 AND ON
My overarching goal for my term as president is member engagement, and we’re off to a solid start with the Eisenberg Report and Builder Day. I know we’re busy, but we gain so much by participating. Keep it up! In addition to Day on the Hill, BATC’s lobbying team has been deeply engaged in a range of issues such as the building code (including the sprinkler mandate); the energy code; street improvement districts; moratoria 6

BE ENGAGING with your followers without being overwhelming. It’s important to post on social media regularly to stay in front of your viewers. However, posting too frequently can cause consumer fatigue and you run the risk of people not paying attention or unfollowing you. Also, post things that are meaningful to your viewers. Tennyson Anseth Robert Thomas Homes, Inc. BE UNIQUE. Your posts on Facebook should not always be the same as on Twitter. Twitter is a great place to tweet about industry news whereas Facebook is a more intimate setting where you can connect more closely with your fans with personal posts.
BE SHORT & SWEET. Use Twitter’s 140 characters as a good rule of thumb for Facebook. No one wants to read a novel when they scroll down their Newsfeeds. If you want to use a click thru link take advantage of a URL shortening service like bitly (bit.ly), Google (goo.gl), or Hootsuite (ow.ly).
FAN ACQUISTION. If you’re looking to increase Twitter followers or Facebook fans, try boosting a post or tweet. The investment is minimal, but the results are targeted and ensure that your posts are seen. ASK QUESTIONS. Social media is all about interaction. Host a contest or give-away to get people engaged (just be sure to review Facebook’s contest guidelines).

Tennyson’s Social Media Tips TRACK & ANAYLZE, THEN STRATEGIZE. How are your posts are performing? Are you receiving shares, likes, clicks, comments, retweets or regrams for specific posts? Analyze the time of day you post, and don’t forget about your silent engagers. Not everyone who views your post will interact. Track results with Google Analytics, Facebook tools, and with URL tracking codes such as tiny link services bitly (bit.ly), Google (goo.gl), or Hootsuite (ow.ly). Be mindful of your unfollows…you may be posting irrelevent content or too frequently for your followers. Strategize based off your findings. YOU’RE NOT TOO BUSY FOR SOCIAL MEDIA. can sometimes seem daunting and time consuming. It’s not! Start small using one platform, such as Facebook or Houzz. Utilize posting tools such as Hootsuite or Facebook’s scheduling options to prepare your calendar in advance. Social media done effectively builds SEO and is one avenue that allows you to control the content and messages about your company.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO DO A/B TESTS. Get creative! Try posting different things and see what your followers and fans gravitate to in terms of engagement (clicks, likes, retweets, etc.). Try posting at different times of the day. And don’t forget to track and analyze the results and then include those findings in your social media strategy.
EDUCATE AND INFORM YOUR EMPLOYEES. Social media is everyone’s responsibility. Create a social media culture at your company. Ask employees to get involved by following, sharing, liking, and commenting. Educate coworkers on how and why this impacts them. Share social media successes. The more people on board, the easier your job becomes.
YOUR FANS “LIKE” OR “FOLLOW” YOU BECAUSE THEY WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. Be sure to share relevant information and post
consistently (of course after you have analyzed trends).

By Katie Eldred, BATC Press Secretary
When you look at the multitude of issues facing our industry, specifically regulatory issues, you may feel like there is nothing that you can do to solve them. That’s not the case. There are many ways each and every BATC member can join in the fight to make sure our voice is heard by lawmakers and regulators. This year’s Builder Day at the Capitol was a great example of how each of us can make a difference. We had over 200 industry members attend, which made for over 80 meetings with legislators. That’s 200 personal stories these lawmakers can now connect with our issues, and that’s over 80 times our concerns were shared.
can’t do individually, that’s part of what BATC brings to the table. We bring this industry together because collectively we have more power.” “Making sure that these lawmakers understand who we are and that we need their help is what Builder Day at the Capitol is all about,” said Chris Contreras, BATC President. Builder Day at the Capitol is a great way to start, but it’s not the only way BATC members can influence the decisions being made at the Capitol. As the legislative session continues, we are actively preparing for the 2016 elections. BATC made great
“BY ALL OF US COMING TOGETHER AND BY ALL OF US CONTRIBUTING, WE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN 2014 AND WE’RE GOING TO MAKE AN EVEN BIGGER DIFFERENCE DURING THE NEXT ELECTION CYCLE.” —DAVID SIEGEL, BATC
“For some people this was the first time they’ve been at the Capitol. Seeing so many become engaged in the civic process is what being a part of an association is all about,” said David Siegel BATC Executive Director. “Associations exist so we can come together collectively to do what we

people who understand the importance of homebuilding and remodeling, it is so much easier to address the regulatory issues and burdens as we go forward, and Housing First helps us do that, “ said Siegel. “It’s the critical tool that helps us get the right people in office, who understand homebuilding and understand our business perspective. These are the people we can work with at the Capitol, and who will support us as we work with regulatory agencies.” “There are number of unnecessary regulations that continue to make it impossible to build the American dream home affordably,” said Bill Burgess, President of Lennar and past Housing First Chair. “I think the last few years have really taught us that we need to find friends and allies in government that are willing to stand up for our industry and prevent what’s been happening.” During the 2014 elections, Housing First was able to greatly impact the elections and played an important role in electing

a housing-friendly majority in the house. We’ve already seen a difference at the Capitol in the number of friends and lawmakers that are willing to go to bat for us. “Housing First for BATC really is a game changer,” said Siegel. “With Housing First we are able to influence elections in ways that we were never able to before.” The goal is to do even more this year as we look to put more friends of the home building industry in the Minnesota Senate and House. None of the work Housing First does would be possible without contributions from our members. “We must wake up right now, and we’ve got to get back to defending our industry,” said Burgess.
“By all of us coming together and by all of us contributing, we made a difference in 2014 and we’re going to make an even bigger difference during the next election cycle,” said Siegel. “Whether you can donate a lot or a little, everything helps because together we can make a difference.”

Bluebird House Project Gets Underway! Matthew Richard Harris was born with spina bifida and has had a very complicated and difficult medical history. At age 20, due to frequent respiratory illnesses, Matthew, a graduate of Minnetonka High School, had a surgical procedure to insert a tube into his windpipe to help him breathe. After the surgical procedure Matthew moved to a Homeward Bound home in Brooklyn Park. Unfortunately Matthew continued to have frequent and serious medical complications which required extended hospital stays. In 2007 Matthew moved to Homeward Bound’s Bluebird House in Maple Grove. Bluebird House is a special care residence that provides services for the most medically fragile individuals. Residents have access to 24-hour nursing care with the intent to keep individuals with severe and compromised health issues away from hospitals and nursing homes and into the community.
Since being at Homeward Bound’s Bluebird House, Matthew’s health has stabilized. The team of nurses and caregivers have provided Matthew with many years without hospital visits or surgeries. Matthew does however continue to face serious medical challenges and every day of his life is definitely a gift to be treasured. The BATC Foundation and Build Partner Vujovich Design Build are proud to be helping Homeward Bound remodel Bluebird House. The remodel will enable a more effective use of space, something critically needed by residents, families and staff. With our help they can continue to provide their special kind of care for Matthew and the other three residents of Bluebird House.

Luke Klemke
Tim Rascher
Eddie Kibira is a first year student at Dunwoody College of Technology, pursuing a degree in Construction Management. His passion lies at the intersection of technology and business and believes that will help him thrive in the construction industry.
Luke Klemke is a senior at the University of Minnesota striving toward a degree in Construction Management with a minor in Management through the Carlson School of Business. Most recently he finished working on the new Saint Paul Saints Stadium.
Tim Rascher is a junior at University of Wisconsin – Stout, majoring in Construction with a Business Administration minor. After Tim graduates, he wants to either go into the family plumbing business or start a residential construction business of his own.
BATC Foundation is Pleased to Announce New Program We are excited to announce that the Foundation is partnering with HomeAid America to add a new program under the “umbrella” of the BATC Foundation. Scholarship Recipient Says Thank You: “I would like to say thank you to all the donor(s) for my scholarship. Your contributions to me were very generous and will not be forgotten. I think it’s great that the funding for these several scholarships goes to students who are studying construction management or constructionrelated fields that are from the Twin Cities metro area. I have been a Minnesota man all my life and that’s why I chose to come to the University of Minnesota for my Construction Management major. I saw an opportunity to better myself and can use the field experience that I have obtained throughout the years to help better the industry. On a management level I know with the schooling I am being provided, I can turn myself into a confident leader that employees can look up to and trust to get the job done right. I have geared myself to have a personal goal of reaching the top. This scholarship is helping me out so much, the less I have to pay in tuition means the less I have to take out in student loans which turns out to be the less I have to work while I’m in school and the more free time I will have to concentrate on my studies. Again, thank you donor(s) and thank you BATC Foundation. Sincerely, Luke Klemke

MN GREEN PATH
Latest From
Minnesota’s Green Path In the past, building to a certification that went above and beyond minimum code requirements was always voluntary. Builders wanted a way to set themselves apart from the marketplace, and programs such as Energy Star provided many of them with a decent option.
Is it any surprise to learn that recently three more medium sized builders in the Twin Cities have committed to taking the next step? They have committed to 100% of their homes going forward being MN Green Path Advanced Certified. This means that their homes meet the minimum criteria for Green Certification, a step beyond simply Energy Tested.
Today, Minnesota has recently adopted a new residential building code and a new residential energy code. Now that these are in effect, the increased cost of building presents a very real challenge for builders and their sales teams.
While that may be true, some builders have recognized that the new energy code is bringing them closer to Green Certification than ever before. Since those code requirements are mandatory, for many builders it becomes difficult to explain the price difference to a potential homebuyer. Saying, “this home is Green Certified” is easier to explain than many of the new energy code improvements.
hear the latest from the field.
The total Home Performance Reports MN Green Path issued has reached nearly 3,000. Around 60% of the entries in the 2015 Spring Parade of Homes have elected to be on the MN Green Path Energy Tour. What does Saying, “this home this tell us? Builders is Green Certified” prefer showcasing is easier to explain the combination of green and energy than many of the new efficient features with energy code the other aspects of their homes. improvements.
Remember, MN Green Path has Energy Tested, Advanced Certified, and Master Certified levels. The two Green Certified levels, Advanced and Master, have the added bonus of being able to check the box on the MLS listing for “Green Certified.” This is another way MN Green Path sets Certified homes apart from the rest.
This percentage is even higher on the consumer side. Surveys and recent studies show that a large majority of home buyers are not only interested in homes with green features, they would be willing to pay more for those upgrades and features, especially when amortized over the life of a mortgage.
