a word from our president
Thank You! In my final BATC Digest letter as president, I want to first say thank you. Thanks to my fellow board members, your engagement and support during the year has been invaluable. Thanks to David and the BATC staff for keeping us on target and implementing our strategic plans so flawlessly. Thanks to our sponsors, advertisers and donors who make the work we do possible. And, thanks to so many of you who volunteer for committee work, attend events, and keep us on our toes. This truly is an amazing industry made up of some incredible people. It’s been an honor and privilege to serve as your President.
Looking back at the year, we did get a lot accomplished and faced some difficult challenges and decisions. Our big win in late 2015 at the Minnesota Supreme Court striking down the sprinkler mandate set the bar pretty high, but I think we passed the ensuing hurdles fairly well. The short legislative session was a challenge, but our exceptional lobbying team successfully defended against harmful proposals and continued to elevate the industry. Our Builder Day at the Capitol showed our legislators that we are a force to be reckoned with, and with plans to partner with the Realtors’ Associations in 2017, we expect to be even more impactful! We’re currently in the midst of our biggest political effort yet through our Housing First initiative. With educational and political expenditures, we’re making a major impact to bring even more housing champions to the State Capitol in 2017. If you haven’t seen our Think Local videos and our candidate roster, please visit HousingFirst.org for all the details.
Housing First
The Parade of Homes, Remodelers Showcase and Artisan Home Tour continue to bring out plenty of real buyers during the tours, while introducing new and newly remodeled homes to an ever growing audience. And our Buy New digital campaign has reached millions, sharing the reasons new and newly remodeled homes create communities and make lives better.

Another accomplishment this year was the completion of our consumer survey to help us determine the messaging that will resonate with our various constituencies as we work to build a stronger association and industry. We want to make sure that Twin Cities families as well as legislators, the news media, and our peers understand what BATC stands for, not just what we fight against. We learned a lot, including that about 22 percent of the region’s adults are our core market — those that say they’ll likely change their residence in the next few years and will be looking at new when they do. We also discovered that these folks care about the home they buy, but they care even more about their community. So, you’ll be seeing a lot more from us on this subject in the coming months, including our new tag line: BATC — Experts in Building Community. CONTINUES ON 8

a word from our president
The biggest disappointment this year was the breakdown in negotiations with our state association, the Builders Association of Minnesota (BAM). After 18 months of tireless work from a number of BATC and BAM leaders, we worked out a deal that would have given BATC proportional representation on the BAM board as well as steered the membership dollars we send to BAM into effective communications and political action. When the BAM board voted down this agreement, we couldn’t, in good conscience continue to send your dues to an organization that doesn’t support BATC efforts. We have advised NAHB and BAM that the door is open if a reasonable compromise is presented to us, but in the meantime, we are disaffiliated and have reduced your membership dues by $200. Those of us who wish to continue to attend the International Builders Show (IBS) can do so as non-members, and we have options for those who want to remain active at NAHB.
I was thrilled to meet and get to know so many of you during the year. Our Launch Party at the Calhoun Beach Club in January was an amazing beginning, with so many members elbowto-elbow in that beautiful space. Our April Builders & Remodelers Show (BRS) was a huge success, bringing plenty of new attendees to see the products and services of our Associate members. As we welcome in the new year, We had a blast at our June member appreciation we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of BATC’s amazing advertisers and sponsors. Vogel on Housing: “A strong housing market supports both spending & jobs in all sectors of the economy, and supports family.”
Haley on Housing: “Roughly a quarter of the cost of a newly constructed home is due to excessive regulations. So it’s clear to me that if we don’t pay attention to that, we are restraining people’s ability to become homeowners. With the education debt burden already facing many millennials, home ownership has become an unattainable dream.”

Nash on Housing: “While the housing market in my district 47A is growing and booming in fact, there are areas that housing is seeing a slowing due to high taxes, and as a result of developers and builders being given a difficult number of hurdles to jump over.”
Anselmo on Housing: “Real estate and the related services and trade jobs are important to helping drive our economy forward.”
Barr on Housing: “When the housing market improves, people become more comfortable with moving and building. When they’re concerned about the value of their home, which is their biggest investment, they don’t spend overall. A better housing market gives people the confidence to go out and patronize other businesses.”

Peterson on Housing: “As a Realtor, I understand that homeownership is one way that a regular person can grow their wealth. As a long term investment, home equity can provide stability for retirement and other needs. Basically it is Economics 101.”
Wills on Housing: “Taxes and regulations can make home ownership or remodeling prohibitively expensive for middle-class families. When housing is too expensive for families, middle-class families are squeezed the most, with many left unable to move from renting to home ownership. If we bring down costs associated with building, buying, or remodeling a home, we put home ownership in reach for many who might not otherwise have the opportunity.”
Koznick on Housing: “I understand as a 20+ year professional in mortgage lending and real estate that home values and equity are the driver of families’ wealth and confidence. As homebuilding and the housing market strengthen after the crash we start to see the cycle improve and people are able to make moves and decisions that spur more economic activity.”

Anderson on Housing: “Although the quality of life in MN certainly is a draw for many homeowners, the best way to improve the MN housing market is by holding down taxes and costly regulations, making homes more affordable for families.”

Franzen on Housing: “We need to promote investments in home ownership, remodeling and in neighborhoods. When people are financially invested in their community we all benefit by having safer neighborhoods and economic growth.”
Pratt on Housing: “I routinely hear that affordable housing is out of reach for many families, yet there is a great demand. I hear from contractors that the policies that the state, regional and communities have placed on growth have had a negative impact on the ability to meet housing needs without subsidies and tax breaks.” CONTINUES ON 20

MATT LITTLE
District 58, Lakeville Open Seat, DFL Little on Housing: “A variety of market-rate housing is essential to a diversified economy and workforce. The direction of our housing market determines the potential of our workforce for area businesses.”
Housing First’s Criteria Used to Determine its 2016 Endorsements The Housing First PAC uses specific criteria to determine its endorsements. These include: the candidate’s demonstrated support for housing issues, leadership on key housing issues, candidate electability, and a strong housing and business voting record for incumbent candidates. For incumbents, support on housing issues was determined by bill and amendment authorship, committee and floor discussion support, voting record and staff/consultant recommendation. For new candidates, BATC staff and member leadership interviewed all new candidates to discuss our industry and measure support on key regulatory and policy issues.
Your Election Day Checklist Tuesday, November 8th will be here before we know it. While the presidential race may be hogging all of the spotlight, it’s important to not forget about our local races. We can’t afford to sit at home this Election Day. Here’s how you can be prepared for November 8th.

Do they understand the importance of keeping homes affordable and the regulatory burden? Following our Housing First Network on social media and blogs is a great place to start. 2016 New Product Champion
A PRODUCT AND SERVICE EXPO
Redbox+ of Minneapolis, MN PRESENTED BY:
Founded by local Minnesotan, Jeffrey Matjka, Redbox+ is a unique solution for jobsites. Matjka, whose family had run a recycling/scrap yard since 1975, had a great idea to solve two jobsite problems at once, which he patented and turned into a brand new company launched in 2006. Redbox+ combined a roll-off container with a portable restroom in one neat package, Today, Redbox+ is franchised in Charlotte NC, Ivyland PA, Ronkonkoma NY and Sioux Falls SD in addition to their Minneapolis branch. And we weren’t the only ones impressed with this very cool product, Redbox+ earned the “Innovation of the Year” award during the 2007 International Waste Expo.
Redbox+ benefits include: • One call, one company two services • Keeps your crew on site throughout the day
• Protects your reputation – No “surprises” on the job site
• Eliminates additional • A toilet that never invoicing and tips paperwork • One call, one • Reduces liability company, one invoice • Gives you a plus service you can competitive edge count on
Could You be our Redbox+ for 2017? Last April was our first Best New Product/ Service award for participating BRS exhibitors, congratulations Redbox+ for taking the honor in 2016. We’ll be at it again in 2017. First, when you sign up to exhibit, make sure to take the time to complete the “new product/service” field. We’ll promote your newest product or service online (BATCBRS.com) and on the show floor. And, if you’ve got something really innovative or fun, you could become our New Product Champion for 2017!

A nail is hidden somewhere in every issue of the BATC Digest, including the one you’re holding right now. It could be tucked into a photo or stuck in a drawing…in a margin…in a body of text…even used as an exclamation point at the end of a headline (but never in an advertisement). It resembles a real-life nail and looks something like this…

Importance of Referrals “We also cannot build a strong association without the connections provided to us by existing BATC members.” We work in an industry that still adheres to that time-honored adage of working with people you know. It almost seems that the world would stop spinning if we didn’t rely on referrals for new business and people to partner with. Everyone loves being able to say, “I know someone who does tile.” Or “You have to call my mortgage guy.” When you find a reliable resource that makes your life easier, you hold tight to that contact. My whole life, I have followed this rule of thumb. I rarely reach out to a stranger for anything business related. That is how I like to approach membership at BATC. This is the industry of working together. We literally cannot build a home without the cooperation of several companies, cities and homeowners. We also cannot build a strong association without the
connections provided to us by existing BATC members. Think about all of the industry professionals that you interact with on a daily basis. Architects, realtors, mortgage professionals, painters, tile installers, lumberyard reps, interior designers, builders, remodelers, title professionals… the list is never ending! So, my friend, I need a referral. I am looking for companies and individuals within the building industry who would benefit from a BATC membership and have not yet joined. Send me a name and contact information when you come across a potential member. Let them know about your experience with our association. BATC is here to support the people who are literally building the communities across the Twin Cities. We do it through our consumer and B2B marketing, continuing education,
legal assistance, government representation and the dayto-day informational support we provide. Do you know someone or a business who would benefit from a BATC membership? Even if that referral does not join us, we can rest assured that they at least know that BATC is out here doing good work to forward our industry. Hopefully you feel that BATC has provided you value through your participation. We appreciate your continued membership and hope you will consider giving us that oh-so-important referral. Hope to see you at the BIG Night!

that year, his left ankle received an avulsion fracture when he hopped off the back of a semi-truck’s flatbed. “I did not receive proper medical care while I was overseas and the injury healed wrong; the pain never went away and continued to spread up my leg while I was overseas,” Bernal said, explaining that he continued to be sent out on military missions with the injury.
Disabled army veteran Jonathan Bernal (right) recently had new siding installed on his Oakdale home with the help of Josh Moe (left), vice president of American Building Contractors, Inc., and his team. ABC partnered with the Builders Association of the Twin Cities Foundation to make this renovation possible.
During the last week of June, Jonathan Bernal, an Army veteran who was injured during the Iraq War, received much-needed assistance repairing the exterior of his Oakdale home. The American Building Contractors, Inc. teamed up with the Builders Association of the Twin Cities Foundation to cover all associated costs for the extensive repairs. According to Bernal, the siding had been a problem on his Heath Avenue North home for about three years. It had gotten so bad that birds had begun to live in the walls, especially the walls around his daughter’s bedroom.
“She was afraid that the birds were going to get her at night,” Bernal said about 4-year-old Macy. Bernal and his wife, Theresa, also have an 8-year-old son, Alex. Bernal said it will be a relief to have the house repaired because so many things could have gone wrong as a result of the deteriorating siding, including an electrical fire or mold damage. “I couldn’t afford any of this, ... I wouldn’t be able to get approved for a loan or anything,” he added. Pain never ends Bernal was a member of the Army Reserves when his unit was deployed to Iraq in July 2008. In December of
Bernal said the pain worsened after arriving home after his deployment. He was on crutches at the time and couldn’t walk very well. He said he couldn’t work for the first year because he couldn’t stand for more than a few minutes. He has had four ankle surgeries but the pain has continued, and he was eventually diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome. Bernal received injections in his spine for the pain, but he said something was damaged at the site of an injection, and pain began to take over almost his entire body making it difficult to hold down a steady job or earn enough money to cover his family’s bills. Bernal said that now he can only stand for a few minutes and can no longer maneuver around on his own in a manual wheelchair. Inc., said that ABC has partnered with the BATC Foundation on a few similar projects, but this was the first opportunity for them to be involved from start to finish. ABC donated all the labor and management for the three-day project, and the BATC Foundation paid for the materials except for the shingles, which were donated. “We’re always trying to find opportunities where we can give back to the community,” Moe said. “We felt privileged. It was a great opportunity
to give a little bit back to Jon and his family, who have made such a sacrifice over the years.” Jeff Dawson, the project manager on the jobsite and a veteran himself, said he jumped on the opportunity to “help out a brother.” “I feel truly honored and blessed to be working here and to help this family out and try to give a little bit back to not only what he has given, but what his family has sacrificed,” Dawson said. “He’s not just a number to me. He’s a brother.”
