Durante el año 2016 se consolidó la recuperación de la actividad después del largo periodo de recesión motivado por la crisis económica e inmobiliaria internacional, iniciado el año 2007. La llegada de nuevos encargos y la reanudación de muchos de los trabajos que se habían paralizado durante la crisis nos permitió superar los 6.000.000€ de facturación e igualar el registro del mejor ejercicio de nuestra historia, el año 2008. Los esfuerzos que habíamos realizado por mantener el equipo, por desarrollar su profesionalización, por introducir el BIM con antelación al resto del sector y por ofrecer unos servicios amplios y ajustados a las necesidades de nuestros clientes se transformaron en multitud de nuevos proyectos. In the course of 2016, the recovery of activity was consolidated after a long period of recession caused by the international economic and real-estate crisis, starting in 2007. The arrival of new commissions and the resumption of many of the projects that had been at a standstill during the crisis prompted a turnover of more than 6,000,000€, equalling the record of the best year in our history, 2008. The efforts we had made to maintain the team, to continue its professional development, to introduce BIM ahead of the rest of the sector and to offer a wide range of services tailored to the needs of our clients took the form of a host of new projects.

Un vídeo del proyecto del Llobregat marcaba el inicio de la exposición “Aftermath. Architecture beyond architects”, comisariada por Jaume Prat, Jelena Prokopljevic e Isaki Lacuesta, que se presentó en el pabellón catalán y, posteriormente, a inicios del 2017, en el Arts Santa Mònica de Barcelona. Presentamos el proyecto del vertedero bajo el lema “Farming
the life”, en respuesta a la invitación del comisario de la bienal, Eduardo Aravena, y al tema de la misma: “Reporting from the front”. La instalación realizada por Joan Roig y Joan Batlle en una magnífica sala del pabellón internacional puede ser elegida como imagen Batlleiroig del 2016.

Desde nuestra fundación en 1981, hemos mantenido una estructura empresarial estable que, sumada a la responsabilidad corporativa que promulgamos, nos ha permitido la inversión en contratación y formación continua de un nutrido y sólido equipo humano, actualmente compuesto por más de 80 profesionales. Fruto de nuestra estabilidad y en coherencia con nuestra voluntad de continuidad, la firma dirigida por Enric Batlle y Joan Roig ha incorporado recientemente dos nuevos socios: Iván Sánchez y Albert Gil. La conciliación y la continuidad son pilares de la responsabilidad social de la empresa que se refleja en datos como:

La facturación del 2017 fue cercana a los 6.000.000€, con un incremento de encargos muy importante, tanto en el ámbito de los edificios de oficinas como en el residencial, así como también en el ámbito del planeamiento y del paisaje. En 2017 seguimos con nuestra estrategia de desarrollar con igual intensidad proyectos procedentes de ámbitos tan diversos como el paisaje, el planeamiento y la edificación. A nuestros departamentos de LANDSCAPE, dirigido por Iván Sánchez, de URBAN, dirigido por Abel Porcar, y de BUILDING, dirigido por Albert Gil, se sumó durante 2017 el departamento de INSIDE, dirigido por Marta Peinado y enfocado hacia los proyectos

The publication was coordinated by Joan Roig and Alejandra Liébana, our communications director. The year closed with an extraordinary event. We were awarded the Architecture Medal of the CSCAE (Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España-Spanish Council of Architects’ Associations) for our solid business structure, our holistic approach to architecture, our visionary commitment to innovation and the versatility of our work. The award ceremony took place at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid on 29 November 2017.

Se presentó una nueva publicación sobre nuestra obra en TC Cuadernos, donde se publican 21 proyectos de arquitectura de los ámbitos de la vivienda, los equipamientos, la educación y el trabajo. La publicación estuvo coordinada por Joan Roig y Alejandra Liébana, directora de comunicación. El año terminó con una noticia extraordinaria al recibir la medalla de la arquitectura que concede el CSCAE (Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España) por nuestra sólida estructura empresarial, nuestra aproximación holística a la arquitectura, nuestra visionaria apuesta por la innovación y por la versatilidad de nuestra obra. El acto se celebró en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrid el 29 de noviembre de 2017. Since our practice was founded in 1981, we have maintained a stable business structure which, together with the corporate responsibility that we promote, has allowed us to invest in recruiting and offering continuous training of a large, consolidated team, currently comprising over 80 professionals. As a result of our stability, and in keeping with our desire for continuity, the firm directed by Enric Batlle and Joan Roig has recently incorporated two new partners: Iván Sánchez and Albert Gil. The turnover for 2017 was close to 6,000,000€, with a significant increase in commissions, both in the fields of office and residential buildings, and planning and landscape. We continue with our strategy of equal attention to projects in such varied fields as landscape, planning and building. Our departments of LANDSCAPE, directed by Iván Sánchez, URBAN PLANNING, directed by Abel Porcar, and BUILDING, directed by Albert Gil, were joined in 2017 by the INSIDE department, directed by Marta Peinado and centring on interior design, corporate set-up and retail projects. Metropolitan Urban Development Master Plan (PDU) for Barcelona. We also curated the exhibition “Green Metropolis”, which ran in Barcelona and Cornellà de Llobregat, about the future of our cities based on promoting biodiversity, developing sustainable mobility and recovering productive spaces. With the title “Merging City & Nature” we attended various international symposia and congresses such as reSITE in Prague, MIPIM in Cannes, the LX10 BIG LANDSCAPES Forum in Vienna, the Nature in the City BFU Symposium in Beijing, and national events such as the Responsive Cities Congress and ESADE Capital Markets in Barcelona, among others. Joan Roig directed AXA’s third Architecture and Territory Seminar, and Iván Sánchez lectured at the COAC about rain as an ally in landscape construction.

En la búsqueda de nuestros orígenes hemos colaborado en la edición del libro “L’últim jardiner. Josep Batlle Gras (1920-2006)”, escrito por Montse Rivero y Jordi Cartañà y editado por el Institut d’Estudis Catalans, lugar donde se presentó el 2 de marzo del 2017. Durante el 2017 continué mi colaboración como director de la mesa sobre Infraestructura Verde del Plan Director Urbanístico Metropolitano de Barcelona (PDU). También hemos comisariado la exposición “Metropolis Verda” que se ha presentado en Barcelona y en Cornellà de Llobregat, donde se aborda el futuro de nuestras ciudades desde el fomento de la biodiversidad, el desarrollo de la movilidad sostenible y la recuperación de los espacios productivos. La biodiversidad y la biophilia se han consolidado como temas de trabajo aplicables a todos los proyectos. Hemos
aprendido a cultivar el agua de lluvia en todos nuestros espacios públicos, pero también en espacios inusuales, como el aparcamiento del Viladecans The Style Outlets. Hemos apostado por fomentar la biodiversidad en todos los rincones y en todas las escalas: en los espacios públicos, pero también en las terrazas de los edificios de oficinas, como en el lobby de los Headquarters de Stradivarius o los jardines verticales en los patios del hotel SBGlow. El Insect Hotel del Parc de Vallmora de El Masnou, podría representar la máxima expresión de este Nuevo Concepto Batlleiroig 2017.
Biodiversity and biophilia are strands of work that are applicable to all projects. We have learned to
cultivate rainwater in all of our public spaces, but also in unusual spaces, like the carpark of The Style Outlets in Viladecans. We have started to promote biodiversity in every available spot and at all scales: in public spaces, but also on the terraces of office buildings, like in the lobby of the Stradivarius head offices and the vertical gardens in the courtyards of SBGlow hotel. The Insect Hotel in Vallmora Park in El Masnou could be seen as representing the maximum expression of this Batlleiroig New Concept 2017.

La nueva arquitectura laboral – quizá influenciada por los referentes de Silicon Valley, Google y Amazon – ha dado paso a nuevos espacios, que en Batlleiroig hemos sintetizado en un concepto: “Fusión del espacio laboral con la naturaleza”. En el marco del VIII seminario sobre la consolidación del development en España, organizado por el Club Inmobiliario ESADE Alumni y el Urban Land Institute presenté como keynote speaker una ponencia, preparada conjuntamente con Albert Gil, con el título de “Merging nature and workspace”. Los temas desarrollados en esta ponencia han marcado las directrices de nuestras futuras presentaciones para nuevos edificios de oficinas en el sector del 22@ de Barcelona, pero también han comenzado a influenciar a los diversos proyectos de viviendas que tenemos en curso – 10 de ellos presentados en el Barcelona Meeting Point 2017-, a los desarrollos urbanísticos en marcha y a otros proyectos singulares en construcción, como la nueva terminal de cruceros para Carnival del Puerto de Barcelona. La nueva sede central de Stradivarius, que entró en funcionamiento durante el año, muestra con claridad estos conceptos, iniciados y desarrollados en los diversos proyectos que hemos realizado para el grupo Inditex o en los diversos sectores emergentes del área de Barcelona. El color WHITE ISABELLA de las lamas de aluminio que configuran las diversas fachadas y patios del edificio, orientándose automáticamente siguiendo el movimiento solar, puede ser elegido como Color Batlleiroig 2017.
The new architecture of the workspace, perhaps influenced by Silicon Valley, Google and Amazon, has produced new spaces, which Batlleiroig have synthesised in a single concept: “Fusing the workspace with nature”. In the framework of the eighth seminar on the consolidation of development in Spain, organised by the ESADE Alumni Real-Estate Club and the Urban Land Institute, as keynote speaker I presented a talk, prepared jointly with Albert Gil, entitled “Merging nature and workspace”. The themes set out in that talk marked the guidelines of our future presentations for new office buildings in the 22@ sector of Barcelona, but they have also started to influence the various housing projects (10 of which were presented at Barcelona Meeting Point 2017), urban developments and other singular projects we have under way, such as the new cruise ship terminal for Carnival in the Port of Barcelona. The new Stradivarius headquarters, which opened during the year, clearly show these concepts, initiated and developed in the different projects we have carried out for the Inditex group and in various emerging sectors in the Barcelona area. The WHITE CORAL colour of the aluminium slats that make up building’s façades and courtyards, moving automatically to follow the path of the sun, could be chosen as Batlleiroig Colour 2017.

Se trata de un nuevo y ambicioso objetivo para el colectivo Batlleiroig: “The Batlleiroig Rooftop Farm”. In the public sphere, with the emphasis on its social nature: streets, blue- and greenways, plazas, parks and gardens, urban transformations, environmental recoveries, cemeteries, markets, sports installations, schools, universities, social housing, and several projects associated with sustainable mobility, like the cycle lane designed to link Barcelona and Esplugues de Llobregat while avoiding the road infrastructures that have historically blocked this connection, set to open in early 2018. In the private sphere, closely linked to the urban and land development of our towns and cities: offices, corporate headquarters, shopping centres, residential buildings and highly specialised amenities such as transport terminals, funeral services or FC Barcelona’s new mini-stadium in Sant Joan Despí, where work began at the end of the year on the new Johan Cruyff Stadium. In 2021, to coincide with our fortieth anniversary, Batlle i Roig Arquitectura will present Moratiel House, designed by Josep Maria Sostres and an icon of rationalist architecture in Barcelona, as the headquarters of our future foundation. In 2017 we incorporated the house

Desde el ámbito público y con un fuerte carácter social: calles, vías verdes y azules, plazas, parques y jardines, transformaciones urbanas, recuperaciones medioambientales, restauraciones paisajísticas, cementerios, mercados, instalaciones deportivas, escuelas, universidades, viviendas protegidas y diversos proyectos vinculados a la movilidad sostenible como el carril bici, que tiene que unir Barcelona y Esplugues de Llobregat salvando las infraestructuras viarias que históricamente han impedido esta conexión y que va a ser inaugurado a principios del 2018. Desde el ámbito privado, y muy vinculado a los desarrollos urbanísticos e inmobiliarios de nuestras ciudades: oficinas, sedes corporativas, centros comerciales, edificios de viviendas y equipamientos muy específicos como terminales de transporte, tanatorios o como el nuevo Miniestadi del Futbol Club Barcelona en Sant Joan Despí, que inició sus obras a finales del año con el nuevo nombre de estadio Johan Cruyff. En 2021, coincidiendo con nuestro 40 aniversario, Batlle i Roig Arquitectura presentará la Casa Moratiel de J.M. Sostres, icono de la arquitectura racionalista en Barcelona, como sede de nuestra futura fundación. Durante el año 2017 hemos incorporado la casa a nuestras instalaciones y hemos iniciado el

Batlleiroig came into being on a desk at Jose Antonio Martinez Lapeña and Elías Torres studio mid-1981. While we both had a parallel academic path we did not meet until the last year at university with Rafael Moneo as chair and Elías Torres as professor. Moneo brought to ETSAB a scientific regard and an inclusive attitude against the “Postmodern” or “Tendenza” restrictive attitudes. With him we discovered the importance of place in design and craft in our work.

A pesar de que ambos tuvimos una trayectoria universitaria paralela no coincidimos hasta el último año de la carrera, con Rafael Moneo como catedrático y Elías como profesor. Moneo había traído a la ETSAB una mirada científica y una actitud inclusiva frente a las restrictivas del “Postmodern” o la “Tendenza”. Con él, descubrimos la importancia del lugar en el proyecto y el peso del oficio en nuestro trabajo.

El hecho de que el padre de Enric fuera jardinero, marcó el fuerte interés por implicarnos en proyectos de paisaje. Este interés fue coincidente con un momento en el que en Cataluña se empezaron a convocar concursos sobre espacios públicos. Hay que recordar que Elías Torres había escrito en 1979 un artículo en Arquitecturas bis “Y el resto verde” en el que vaticinaba la importancia que el tema de los jardines iba a tener en un futuro inmediato. Nuestro inicio en la profesión coincidió con la consolidación del proceso de modernización del país que se había puesto en marcha con la transición democrática. Si en la Barcelona de los 60 y 70 el criterio para la formalización de parques y jardines se había basado en una revisión adaptada al clima mediterráneo del modelo que Burle Marx había generalizado en Sudamérica, con un uso intensivo y variado de la vegetación arbórea y una formalización pintoresca de la vegetación arbustiva mediante parterres, en los 80 en cambio, el espacio público se trabajó siguiendo la tradición de las plazas italianas, es decir pavimentando la superficie en su totalidad y confiando más en los elementos vinculados al mobiliario urbano que en la vegetación arbórea. Nuestro posicionamiento en ese momento fue instintivamente el contrario.
“Cuando parecía que el paisaje había que trabajarlo únicamente a partir de elementos arquitectónicos, nosotros empezamos a trabajar con los elementos clásicos del paisaje: vegetación, agua, topografía y recorridos y además desde la perspectiva de la jardinería”. Nuestro primer proyecto, el concurso para el Parque del Escorxador de 1981 “Il Segretto Giardino” era un gran parque de rasgos historicistas encerrado entre cuatro muros que lo aislaban de la ciudad y el segundo, el Cementerio de Roques Blanques, unas terrazas agrícolas, como jardines anclados en el paisaje, en las que los nichos se situaban en los muros de contención, empotrados contra la terraza superior y protegidos por unas pérgolas. Ambos proyectos, hechos en colaboración con Olga Tarrasó, obviaban la arquitectura y se convertían en jardines o en paisajes agrícolas. The fact that Enric’s father was a gardener marked our strong interest to get involved in landscape projects. This interest coincided with a time in which public space competitions started to happen in Catalunya. We must

remember that in 1979 Elías Torres had written an article for Arquitecturas bis “And everything else green” (Y todo lo demás, verde) where he predicted the importance that gardens would have in the near future. Our first steps into the career coincided with the consolidation of the modernization process of the country ignited with the democratic transition. If the criteria for the design of parks and gardens during the 1960s and 1970s in Barcelona was based in an adaptation to the Mediterranean climate of Burle Marx’s model widespread in South America, with an intense and varied use of trees and a picturesque disposition of shrubs and bushes in flower beds. During the 80s however, public space was designed according to the tradition of Italian squares, which is paving the whole surface and entrusting elements linked to urban furniture elements rather than arboreal vegetation. Our stance at the time was instinctively the opposite. When it seemed that we had to work the landscape only according to architectural elements, we started to work with landscape’s classic elements: vegetation, water, topography and promenades. Even more so, from a gardening perspective. Our first project, the 1981 competition for the Escorxador Park “Il Segretto Giardino” was a large park with historicist traits enclosed between four walls isolating it from the city and the second one, the Roques Blanques Cemetery, agricultural terraces as gardens anchored in the landscape, where niches were located on the retaining walls, embedded against the upper terrace and protected by pergolas. Both projects, carried out together with Olga Tarrasó, bypassed architecture becoming gardens or agricultural landscapes.

[Corp] Notas para una autobiografía 24 Viladecans, Zaragoza o Santander, o al proyecto de territorio como en el Vertedero del Garraf. “El Jardín de la Metrópolis”, título de la tesis doctoral de Enric, define a la perfección esa actitud que, yendo mas allá de los conceptos clásicos de Urbanismo, Arquitectura y Paisaje, busca vincularlos, no sólo el paisaje, sino también el espacio público, priorizándolo y convirtiéndolo en el motor en la construcción de la ciudad. Esta actitud ha acabado constituyéndose en el modus operandi de nuestro despacho, buscando siempre vincular la definición de lo urbano a las lógicas del paisaje.

Decisivo en el desarrollo posterior de nuestro trabajo en paisaje fue tanto el estudio de los paisajistas clásicos como el descubrimiento de los contemporáneos, Lawrence Halprin y Dan Kiley en Estados Unidos o Jacques Simon y Michel Corajoud en Francia. Ellos, junto al Land Art y la agricultura, acabaron conformando un corpus teórico que nos sigue acompañando en nuestro trabajo. Que mi padre fuera albañil no determinó que yo fuera arquitecto, pero sí el interés de nuestro estudio por la construcción. En paralelo a nuestro trabajo en paisaje, desarrollamos desde el inicio una gran actividad en edificación, propiciada por el auge de concursos públicos durante los 80. La no especialización en una tipología determinada, nos permitió trabajar en la construcción de vivienda pública, escuelas, mercados, bibliotecas e incluso algunos puentes. Trabajar en todas las tipologías y en todas las escalas, desde el proyecto urbano hasta el diseño más específico, fue el gran aprendizaje que nos regaló la década de los 80. Nunca hemos hablado de estilo. El lugar, el programa y el cliente han sido el libro de instrucciones que nos ha permitido encontrar las relaciones formales y técnicas idóneas para cada ocasión. Siempre hemos escapado de la repetición de esquemas y soluciones. La construcción, con motivo de los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona de 1992, del Parque del Nudo de la Trinidad inició un proceso de diseño de grandes parques vinculados siempre al proyecto de ciudad, como es el caso de nuestros trabajos en Sant Cugat,

Al mismo tiempo, desde el 92 nuestro estudio inició una mayor actividad en edificación privada con proyectos importantes como la Torre Millenium, las oficinas centrales del RACC o la Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper para el Fútbol Club Barcelona. La crisis económica de 2008 llevó a revisar la política de grandes parques frente a un modelo menos generalista pero más estructurador. En este sentido, nuestro trabajo actual en la construcción de grandes vías llamadas a estructurar el territorio como la Via Blava del Llobregat o la conexión ciclable entre Barcelona y el Baix Llobregat, es un ejemplo claro en el cambio de tendencia. La reutilización del paisaje mediante una nueva estructura de movimiento, alienta un cambio de paradigma. The development of our subsequent work in landscape was decisively influenced by both the study of classic landscape architects and the discovery of contemporary ones, Lawrence Halprin and Dan Kiley in the United States or Jacques Simon and Michel Corajoud in France. Them, together with Land Art and agriculture, shaped the theoretical corpus that is still with us in our work. My father being a mason did not turn me into an architect however it did shape our office’s interest in construction. Together with our landscape work, since the beginning we developed large building activity, propitiated by the rise of public competitions during the 1980s. Not specializing in a certain typology allowed us to work in public housing, schools, markets, libraries
and even in some bridges. Working in all typologies and all scales, from the urban project to the most specific design was the great traineeship the 1980s awarded us. We have never mentioned style. The place, the programme and the client have been the parameters that have guided us in finding the adequate formal and technical relations for every occasion. We have always escaped the repetition of schemes and solutions. On the occasion of Barcelona’s 1992 Olympic Games, the construction of the Nus de la Trinitat Park launched a process of designing large parks always linked to the city project, as demonstrated by our works in Sant Cugat, Viladecans, Zaragoza or Santander or the territorial project as in Garraf Waste Landfill. “The Garden of Metropolis”, Enric’s PhD thesis, perfectly defines our attitude that, transcending the classical concepts of Urban Planning, Architecture and Landscape, attempts
to link them, not only to landscape, but also to public space, prioritizing it and turning it into the engine for the construction of the city. This attitude has ended up constituting our office’s modus operandi, always looking to link the definition of urban with the landscape logic. At the same time, since 1992 our office began a greater activity in private building with important projects such as the Millenium Tower, RACC headquarters, or Joan Gamper FCB Sports Complex. The 2008 economic crisis led to the review of the large park policy towards a less general but more structuring model. In this regard, our current work in the construction of large trails aimed at organizing the territory such as the Llobregat Blue Path or the Bike lane between Barcelona and Baix Llobregat is a clear example of this trend shift. The reuse of the landscape through a new movement structure motivates a shift in paradigm.

En edificación, en cambio, la crisis si bien ralentizó casi hasta la paralización el sistema de encargos públicos, tuvo-en nuestro caso-un efecto revitalizador en el ámbito privado. Aún con cierta experiencia en edificios de oficinas, como el edificio INTERFACE o la sede de la CMT, ambos en la zona del 22@ de Barcelona, a partir de 2008 empezamos a desarrollar una gran actividad con esa tipología. Eso nos permitió estudiar casuísticas distintas en relación a la estructura, los cerramientos o el comportamiento medioambiental de este tipo de edificios. Y por otro lado y a partir de la relación con INDITEX, empezamos a trabajar en grandes construcciones dedicadas a la logística de sus grandes marcas de moda. El particular tamaño, ubicación y modo de uso de estos edificios nos planteó la creación de nuevas estrategias proyectuales que al cabo desembocaron en nuevos criterios tipológicos. Estructuras de grandes luces, ausencia de áreas subterráneas, construcción hipóstila, zona de aparcamiento en planta baja, sistema de ventilación interior a través de patios, definición de las fachadas desde la orientación y la protección solar, son algunas de las características que definen una nueva tipología de estas construcciones. Y aun así, cada una de ellas difiere de las demás y busca adaptarse al carácter intrínseco de la marca. Siempre hemos querido ser, desde el oficio, un despacho eminentemente profesional, que se ocupara de todas las áreas del proyecto y la construcción sin desestimar ningún aspecto. Para definir nuestro despacho solemos decir que trabajamos todas las escalas y todos los temas, y lo secuenciamos diciendo que trabajamos Urbanismo, Paisaje y Edificación de manera transversal. En la actualidad, Batlleiroig somos cuatro socios y noventa profesionales. No sé si estaba en nuestro ADN convertirnos en lo que somos ahora, pero sin duda, ser lo que queríamos ser, obliga a desarrollar este oficio desde una profesionalidad y una auto exigencia que acaban siendo el motor de tu propia evolución. some of the characteristics defining a new typology for these constructions, even though each one is different from the others and attempts to adapt to the brand’s inherent character. Departing from the craft, we always wanted to be an eminently professional office, tackling all faces of the project and construction without ignoring any aspect. To define our office we usually say we work all scales and all issues and we sequence them saying we work Urban Planning, Landscape, and Building in a traversal manner. Batlleiroig is currently made up of four partners and ninety professionals. I don’t know if it was imprinted in our DNA to become what we are today, but undoubtedly being what we wanted to be compels us to develop this craft from a professional and self-discipline position that ends up propelling our own evolution.

In building, however, while the crisis slowed down to almost full stop the public commission system, it reinvigorated our involvement with the private realm. With some experience in office buildings such as the INTERFACE building or the CMT Headquarters, both at the 22@ district in Barcelona, since 2008 we have been developing great activity regarding that typology. That allowed us to explore different case studies regarding structure, facades, or the environmental behavior of this type of buildings. On the other hand, due to our relation with INDITEX we began to work with large buildings devoted to the logistics of its large fashion brands. The specific size, location, and use of these buildings led to the creation of new design strategies that would unfold in new typological criteria. Large span structures, absence of underground areas, hypostyle construction, parking space on the ground floor, interior ventilation through patios, defining facades due to orientation and solar protection, are

This increase in business’ figures has reflected with both private and public commissions in all of the company’s departments: planning, landscape, architecture, and interior design. 70% of our growth has been organic, that is, recurring clients. This fact demonstrates how our clients positively value our services and rely on us time and again. In 2017, thus, we added 30% of new clients to our portfolio where, among others, institutions and private companies such as DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS, CORP, AEDAS, URBAN INPUT, LA LLAVE DE ORO, COPCISA, DOSPUNTOS and SALUD DE LA MUJER–DEXEUS, stand out.

En los últimos 3 años nuestra cifra de facturación se ha incrementado un 40%, pasando de 3.525.083 € en 2015 a 5.796.384 € en 2017. Este incremento de la cifra de negocio se ha reflejado de forma generalizada en todas las áreas de la empresa: planeamiento, paisaje, arquitectura e interiorismo, mediante contrataciones públicas y privadas. Un 70% del crecimiento en nuevos proyectos ha sido orgánico, es decir, de clientes que ya lo habían sido en el pasado. Este dato manifiesta que nuestros clientes valoran positivamente nuestros servicios y vuelven a depositar su confianza en nosotros. El principal valor de Batlleiroig es nuestro equipo, que este 2017 suma conocimiento, compromiso, implicación y resultados. Para hacer frente al incremento de los encargos, hemos aumentado el número de personas del equipo en un 45% en los últimos 3 años. En Enero de 2015 éramos 41 profesionales y durante este año se han incorporado 36 profesionales hasta llegar a un número de 77 a finales de 2017. Los recién llegados se han incorporado a todos los departamentos: paisaje, edificación, interiorismo, planeamiento, comunicación, arquitectura técnica y administración. Todas estas personas encajan con el ADN de Batlleiroig: son excelentes profesionales pero sobre todo excelentes personas. Formamos un equipo experto, profesional e implicado; un equipo joven y dinámico capaz de dar respuesta a los grandes retos que enfrentamos diariamente.
El compromiso con nuestro equipo es la permanencia. Un núcleo formado por el 25% del equipo tienen una permanencia mayor de 10 años en la empresa; estas personas son un referente para los recién llegados y transmiten los conocimientos y el ADN de la empresa. Buscamos ofrecer un trabajo de calidad, creando puestos de trabajo estables en donde las personas puedan crecer profesionalmente y disfrutar día a día con nuevos retos. Las encuestas de clima laboral realizadas nos dan una puntuación excelente (8.1), y destacan el fuerte compromiso personal con la empresa y la satisfacción en términos de crecimiento profesional. Our team has grown 45% over the last 3 years to manage increasing commissions. In January 2015 we were 41 professionals and in 2017 we added 36 more, reaching 77 team members by the end of the year. Newcomers have joined all departments: landscape, building, interior design, planning, communication, surveying, and management. All these people fit into Batlleiroig’s DNA: they are excellent professionals but above all, excellent human beings. We configure an expert team, professional and committed; a young and dynamic team able to face the great challenges we confront daily. The commitment with our team is permanence. 25% of the team makes up a core with over 10 years involved in the company; these people are a reference for newcomers and pass on knowledge and the company’s DNA. We strive to offer quality work, creating stable jobs where people can grow professionally and enjoy new challenges daily. The working atmosphere polls conducted give us excellent marks (8.1), and stress the strong personal commitment with the company and satisfaction regarding professional growth. Formación Desde nuestros inicios, a Batlleiroig hemos tenido muy claro que para mejorar hay que formarse, para luego poner en práctica los nuevos conocimientos. La formación es el medio para hacer avanzar, mejorar y evolucionar nuestra práctica. Por eso aplicamos tres niveles diferenciados de formación: formación general, formación in-company, y formaciones específicas. Since the beginning, at Batlleiroig we have always believed that to improve we must educate ourselves, and later deploy the newly acquired knowledge. Training is the mean to advance, improve and evolve our practice. That is why we established three different training levels: general training, in-company training, and specific training.
Formación general General training.
In-company training. La formación in-company pretende ser una actualización y especialización de conocimientos. Se realiza siempre en horario laboral y durante el 2017 se ha materializado en: clases de diferentes niveles inglés, formaciones en BIM, sesiones tecnológicas específicas, y formaciones de bienvenida que introducen los sistemas de calidad / ISO y el funcionamiento interno de la empresa. Con el fin de mejorar la comunicación con nuestros clientes internacionales, nos centramos en clases de inglés
34 personalizadas, con el objetivo de adquirir vocabulario y fluidez en las conversaciones sobre el entorno profesional. El caso del BIM se lleva a cabo en tres estratos: uno inicial que imparte el equipo de BIM Manager, que transmite conocimiento de la metodología de trabajo interna de Batlleiroig, un segundo estrato que tiene por objetivo reforzar los conocimientos básicos de las personas recientemente incorporadas al equipo, y el último estrato -y el más específico- para dotar de conocimientos avanzados y capacitar el equipo para el desarrollo de proyectos concretos. The goal of the 2 annual general training sessions for the whole team is sharing experiences and knowledge acquired on the main ongoing projects. In day long sessions, we combine an on-site visit to a significant project with small masterclasses on every project, where we delve on themes selected according to the project’s singularities and their innovation lines.

In-company training tries to be an update and specialization in
knowledge. They are always carried out during working hours and in 2017 they have been the following: English lessons in different levels, BIM training, specific technological sessions, and welcome training sessions introduction to quality / ISO systems and the company’s internal operation. In order to improve the communication with our international clients, we focus on personalized English lessons, aiming at acquiring vocabulary and fluency in professional environment conversations.
BIM training is developed on three levels: an initial one taught by BIM Manager team, passing on knowledge of Batlleiroig’s internal working methodology, a second level aiming at strengthening basic knowledge of recently incorporated team members, and the last level – and the most specific one – to provide advanced knowledge and prepare each team to develop their specific projects. Technological sessions – BIR TALKS – are delivered at noon on Fridays for roughly one hour, aiming at delving into technical issues, knowledge that must be shared and also general interest. These capsules are aimed at specific teams according to the theme. The welcome and quality training sessions are also part of this pack introducing newcomers on the operation of daily work processes, quality and communication.

Este galardón reconoce el esfuerzo de los profesionales de la arquitectura que, en su trayectoria, ensalzan y ennoblecen el que hacer arquitectónico”. “Spain’s higher Council of Architects Associations (CSCAE) has awarded Batlle i Roig Arquitectura the 2017 CSCAE Medal, one of the sector’s most prestigious recognitions in the country. This award recognizes the effort of architecture professionals whose career praise and ennoble the architectural practice”. 30 years of professional practice and is currently made up by a team of 90 professionals working in the fields of landscape architecture, urban planning, and construction. Recently, it has also added two new partners, Iván Sánchez and Albert Gil. This is why the CSCAE recognizes with this award Batlleiroig experience, its business model, and its holistic vision of architecture. Among Batlleiroig most prominent works, we can highlight office buildings and corporate headquarters for clients such as Inditex, Fútbol Club Barcelona, Catalonia Government or the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (National Commission on Markets and Competition); shopping centers, housing, cultural, educational, and sport facilities; and ambitious landscape transformations such as restoring the Garraf waste landfill into a large natural park or the environmental recovery of the Llobregat river. El planeamiento como creador de valor Planning as added value económico global se hace presente en todas las fases del desarrollo. We have always been brave to approach urban planning as an essential phase a dding value, both economic and social, to any private or public project, and we have tried to convey this trust to our clients. While during the years of the economic crisis and the first ones of the recovery, we have witness how private developers where reluctant to invest in urban development processes and government kept a low profile in their urban transformation projects, in 2017 we have witnessed how private developers are starting to engage in large urban operations and governments once again start to develop complex urban transformations. At the same time, we can see how both public and private clients have significantly switched their priorities regarding what must urban creation and transformation be: preexistence (both natural and built) are reassessed, all environmental aspects acquire great importance (from energy to mobility, through the water cycle) and the adaptation to the shift in the global economic model becomes present in all phases of development.

En este contexto, siempre hemos sido valientes a la hora de afrontar el planeamiento urbanístico como una fase imprescindible que puede aportar un valor añadido, tanto económico como social, a cualquier proyecto público o privado, y hemos intentado transmitir esta confianza a nuestros clientes. Si durante la crisis y los primeros años de la recuperación los privados eran reacios a entrar en procesos urbanísticos y las administraciones mantenían un perfil bajo en sus proyectos de transformación urbana, en 2017 hemos visto como los privados empiezan a atreverse con operaciones urbanísticas de envergadura y la Administración vuelve a poner en marcha transformaciones urbanas complejas. Al mismo tiempo, vemos que tanto los clientes públicos como los privados han cambiado sensiblemente sus prioridades en cuanto a lo que debe ser la creación y la transformación de la ciudad: se ponen en valor las preexistencias (tanto naturales como patrimoniales), toman importancia todos los aspectos medioambientales (desde la energía a la movilidad pasando por el ciclo del agua) y la adecuación al cambio de modelo

Para la redacción de documentos de planeamiento urbanístico Batlle i Roig Arquitectura cuenta con un equipo de personas dedicado de forma específica al urbanismo, y con la intervención de los especialistas del despacho en otras disciplinas (medio ambiente, edificación, espacio público, urbanización). Además, el estudio acostumbra a contar con colaboradores técnicos externos en ámbitos como la movilidad, el medio ambiente o la hidrología, y suele trabajar en estrecha cooperación con diversos equipos jurídicos. La concepción del urbanismo como integrador de las diversas disciplinas nos ha sido particularmente útil en los últimos tiempos, en los que las circunstancias sociales, políticas, económicas y ambientales requieren de esfuerzos cada vez mayores para la consecución de los equilibrios que permiten, sin perjudicar la calidad de los espacios resultantes, el éxito de los desarrollos urbanos. When it comes to drafting urban planning documents, Batlle i Roig Arquitectura has its own team devoted specially to urbanism and draws on the knowledge of its specialists in other disciplines (environment, building, public space, urbanization). The practice also collaborates with external specialists in areas such as mobility and hydrology, and usually works in close cooperation with various legal teams. Urban planning integrating the diverse disciplines has become especially useful in recent times, where social, political, economic, and environmental circumstances require constantly increasing efforts to achieve the balance that allows for success in urban development without impairing the quality of resulting spaces.

Urban renovation Uno de los principales cambios que nos hemos encontrado en los últimos años es la revalorización de las actuaciones dentro del tejido urbano o en los límites de la ciudad, contra la ocupación extensiva de suelo periférico que dominó en los años 2000. El paradigma del modelo de reforma urbana es la consolidación del distrito 22@ de Barcelona, donde, ahora que se van agotando los suelos transformados, estamos trabajando en el desarrollo de nuevos planes de mejora urbana (PMU Pere IV – Àvila – Almogàvers – Badajoz), así como en el replanteamiento de desarrollos aprobados hace años (Can Ricart). Se trata de planeamientos de alta complejidad, en los que hay que tener en cuenta a múltiples propietarios con intereses contrapuestos, preexistencias delicadas, reivindicaciones vecinales y los motivos de interés público defendidos por la Administración, y darles una solución que permita calidad en el espacio urbano y en la arquitectura resultante sin olvidar la funcionalidad de los nuevos espacios creados para la actividad económica. Otro aspecto que ha tomado especial fuerza en los últimos años es la participación de la ciudadanía en la toma de decisiones urbanísticas. Esta vertiente se ha trabajado de forma especialmente intensa durante el año pasado en la Modificación del Plan General Metropolitano en el ámbito del Polígon Centre de Viladecans, un ámbito de actividad industrial tradicional que proyecta una renovación urbana que le permita afrontar con garantías los cambios en la economía global. One of the main changes we have experienced in the last years has been the revaluation of intervention within urban fabric or in the edges of the city, against the extensive occupation of peripheral areas predominant in the first decade of the 21st century. The paradigm of the urban
renovation model is the consolidation of Barcelona’s 22@ district where, once the transformed areas have become scarce we are working in the development of new urban improvement plans (PMU Pere IV – Àvila – Almogàvers – Badajoz) as well as the reconsideration of plans approved years ago (Can Ricart). These are extremely complex plans where we must consider a number of land owners with opposing interests, sensible preexistence, neighboring demands, and public interest causes advocated by the Government. Still we must provide solutions that allow for quality in the urban space and the resulting architecture without disregarding functionality of the new spaces created for economic activity. Another issue that has become relevant in the last years is citizen participation in the urban planning decision making process. This area has been intensely dealt with in the modification of the Metropolitan Master Plan at Polígon Center in Viladecans, an area of traditional industrial activity designing an urban renewal plan that allows it to successfully confront the changes in global economy. 43

Un proyecto que ejemplifica la combinación de la resolución de problemas urbanísticos complejos con la introducción de las nuevas formas de urbanismo es el entorno de la Colònia Güell (Santa Coloma de Cervelló y Sant Boi de Llobregat). A partir de un encargo del Incasòl, propietario de la mayor parte de los terrenos del entorno de este conjunto histórico, Batlleiroig ha diseñado una estrategia de resolución de los problemas urbanísticos que lastran el desarrollo de este sector. A nuestro juicio, la creación de grandes infraestructuras, el desarrollo urbano en piezas autárquicas y la creación de zonas verdes urbanas marginales previstas por planeamientos anteriores y no ejecutadas deben sustituirse por el aprovechamiento de las trazas y las infraestructuras existentes, el mantenimiento del paisaje agrícola como estructurador del crecimiento y la conexión con las zonas urbanas, el transporte público y el paisaje.
Otro encargo público que refleja las nuevas preocupaciones del urbanismo, en el que se enfatizan las actuaciones de detalle, la puesta en valor del patrimonio existente (ya sea arquitectónico, cultural o natural) y el servicio a la ciudadanía es el estudio del ámbito funcional de Collserola que hemos elaborado en el marco del Plan Especial del Parque Natural de Collserola que está desarrollando el Área Metropolitana de Barcelona. Este estudio se centra en la zona de transición entre la ciudad y la naturaleza y la riqueza que aporta la relación entre ambas. A project that illustrates the combination of the resolution of complex urban problems with the introduction of new urban shapes is the Colonia Güell environs (Santa Coloma de Cervelló and Sant Boi de Llobregat). Commissioned by Incasòl, owner of most plots surrounding this historic compound, Batlleiroig has designed a strategy to solve the urban planning problems hampering the development
of the area. In our opinion, the nonbuilt large infrastructures, urban development of autarchic elements and marginal urban green areas intended by previous planning must be substituted by the utilization of existing infrastructure and traces, preserving the agricultural landscape as the structure for future growth and the connection of urban areas, public transport and landscape. Another public commission reflecting current urban planning concerns is the report for Collserola’s functional area we elaborated within the Special Plan for Collserola Natural Park developed by Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB). Specific interventions, reassessment of existing heritage (whether it is built, cultural, or natural), and service for citizens are all stressed. The report focuses on the transition area between city and nature and the value produced by the relation between both.

In 2017 we have begun the planning for Llevant Mar sector in Gavà, an area where we will have to suit a housing development with the preservation, recovery, and connection of large metropolitan free spaces such as the beaches and dunes and the Llobregat Delta Agricultural Park. An specially significant project for our office is the Roques Blanques Metropolitan Cemetery (el Papiol), also on the edges of Collserola. This was Batlleiroig foundational project in 1981, and we have been intervening in it intermittently along our entire career. Last year a Modification of the Metropolitan Master Plan was processed to allow for an extension and improvement of the central services of the cemetery.

Los desarrollos privados también tienen un papel en la ordenación de los bordes de la ciudad. En 2017 hemos iniciado el planeamiento del sector Llevant Mar (Gavà), un ámbito en el que se deberá hacer compatible un desarrollo residencial con la preservación, recuperación y conexión de grandes espacios libres metropolitanos, como son las playas y su espacio dunar y el Parque Agrario del Delta del Llobregat. Un proyecto que tiene especial significación para el despacho, situado también en uno de los bordes de Collserola, es el Cementerio de Roques Blanques (el Papiol). Fue el proyecto fundacional de Batlleiroig en 1981, y hemos ido interviniendo de forma intermitente a lo largo de toda nuestra trayectoria como despacho. Regarding more instrumental planning that go unnoticed but are key to solve specific urban problems, last year the Special Plan to expand the Lola Anglada School in Esplugues has been definitively approved and we have processed the Modification to Sant Sadurní d’Anoia Master Plan allowing the expansion of the Agromillora technology center in Penedés. Planning initiated during 2017 add to others developed the same year, specific for expansions and relocation of company’s headquarters and production centers that will hopefully be fruitful in the following months.

En cuanto a planeamientos más instrumentales que pasan más desapercibidos pero que son fundamentales para resolver problemas urbanísticos concretos, en el último año se ha aprobado definitivamente el Plan Especial que ha permitido la ampliación de la escuela Lola Anglada en Esplugues, o se ha estado tramitando la Modificación del Plan General de Sant Sadurní d’Anoia que permitirá la ampliación del centro tecnológico que la empresa Agromillora tiene en el Penedés. A los planeamientos desarrollados el año pasado se suman otros iniciados durante el año 2017, específicos para ampliaciones y traslados de sedes y centros de producción de empresas, que esperemos que puedan dar frutos durante los próximos meses.
A juzgar por lo ocurrido durante el 2017, todo indica que en los próximos meses continuarán las tendencias de transformación en las prioridades del urbanismo que se han ido apuntando hasta ahora: el refuerzo de la renovación urbana, la relación con el patrimonio natural y la protección del medio ambiente, la atención por las formas blandas de movilidad o la eficiencia de los espacios resultantes. Todos ellos son instrumentos que en Batlleiroig dominamos gracias a nuestra experiencia pluridisciplinar y que esperamos seguir utilizando en la esperanza de colaborar en la creación de un territorio más ordenado y más amable. Taking into consideration what happened during 2017, everything seems to signal that the trends in shifting urban priorities that we have pointed out will continue: the support for urban renovation, the relation with natural heritage and the protection of the environment, the focus on soft mobility or the efficiency of resulting spaces. “2017, un año en el que hemos seguido creciendo, desarrollando más de 50 proyectos con programas diversos, escalas de trabajo muy diferentes, y un común denominador: la transformación del paisaje natural y urbano”.

Año de transición, en el que se han construido las obras de proyectos definidos con anterioridad, durante la crisis económica, en los que hemos profundizado en aquellas estrategias genuinas que nos han acompañado desde los inicios de nuestra actividad, y que nos han permitido desarrollar los nuevos proyectos buscando la excelencia y la vanguardia en la arquitectura del paisaje. Esta extensa actividad ha sido posible gracias a un gran equipo humano, cada vez más multidisciplinar, que tiene un estilo de trabajo propio, optimizado con un Sistema de Gestión de la Calidad diseñado en la casa, y homologado con los certificados ISO-9001, 14001, y 14006, que incluyen la gestión ambiental, y el eco-diseño, Leitmotiv de la marca - Batlleiroig -. Un estilo de trabajo que hemos sabido adaptar a los tiempos, en un contexto de evolución constante, y que se basa en los siguientes principios:

...en un contexto en movimiento donde el paisaje debe satisfacer sus funciones ancestrales y otras de cambiantes, que evolucionan rápidamente con las formas de vida y la organización económica de los ciudadanos. En este sentido nuestros proyectos recuperan los materiales tradicionales del lugar y los combinan con las tecnologías más innovadoras de la industria global, para optimizar las soluciones constructivas y reducir su huella ecológica. Como explica Ramon Folch en su libro ‘Que lo hermoso sea poderoso’, hay que combinar el lema de las sociedades industriales ‘The big is powerful’, y el de los movimientos ecologistas ‘The small is beautiful’.

A continuación se muestra una selección de los mejores proyectos y obras que hemos realizado este año, en los que se puede reconocer la magnitud de los retos y la variedad de soluciones propuestas: desde la definición de nuevas calles, caminos y vías cívicas, hasta la regeneración de espacios públicos sin identidad a partir de la negociación con colectivos de vecinos para el diseño y el equipamiento de espacios libres disponibles en la Ciudad; desde la potenciación de sistemas de explotación agrícola y ganadera en entornos urbanos, hasta la implementación de nuevos sistemas hídricos que modifican los planteamientos de las intervenciones en favor de unas propuestas más sostenibles y más respetuosas con el medio ambiente.

“2017, a year where we kept growing, developing over 50 projects with different programmes, very different working scales, and a common trait: the transformation of natural and urban landscape”. A transition year, where we have built projects defined during the previous economical crisis, where we have delved into genuine strategies that have been with us since the beginning of our activity allowing us to develop new projects searching for excellence and avantgarde in landscape architecture. This broad activity has been possible thanks to the great human team, increasingly multidisciplinary, with unique work style, optimized by an in-house designed Quality Management System, sanctioned with ISO-9001, 14001, and 14006 standards, including environmental management and Eco-Design, Batlleiroig Brand’s Leitmotiv. In a constantly evolving context, we have adapted our working ethos to times, always maintaining the following principles:

In this regard, our projects recover traditional of the place materials and combine them with global industry’s most innovative technologies to optimize construction solutions and diminish the ecological foot-print. As Ramon Folch explains in his book ‘That Beautiful becomes powerful” (Que lo hermoso sea poderoso), we must combine the industrial society’s motto ‘big is powerful’, with that of the environmental movements ‘small is beautiful’.

on promotion and permanent training. A multidisciplinary team including architects, urban planners, landscape architects, agronomist engineers, and environmentalists, in permanent communication with regular external contributors, experts in other disciplines; biologists, geologists, archaeologists, and public work engineers. This are the principles that have been with us for 36 years working on landscape and that have allowed us to finish 2017 exceeding our clients’ expectations and obtaining their trust. A work ethos that has awarded us national and international recognition, honored by a number of publications and prizes, recognizing our effort in innovation and our commitment with the natural environment: the Catalan Construction Awards construction innovation prize for the rainwater drainage system at Viladecans Style Outlets shopping center, and WAF’s highly commended award for the Insect Hotel at Masnou’s Vallmora park. Hereafter we’ll portray a selection of the best projects and buildings we have accomplished this year, where one can spot the scale of the challenges and variety of proposed solutions, from the definition of new trails and civic paths, until the regeneration of public spaces without identity from the participatory processes with neighbors to decide on facilities for new available free spaces, as well as the fostering of agricultural and livestock exploitation in urban environments, or the implementation of new hydrological systems modifying the intervention’s approach in favor of more sustainable and environmentally respectful proposals.

Parque de Vallmora, en el Masnou Situado en el lado sur de la autopista, es el espacio libre más grande del municipio, y dotándolo con espacios ajardinados y equipados para usos de encuentro, de ocio y de descanso de los vecinos. El diseño incorpora las terrazas agrícolas originales, y ha promovido una gran

plantación popular de más de 1.000 árboles. Además de la gran variedad de especies vegetales, el parque también incluye seis hoteles de insectos, para favorecer el desarrollo de la biodiversidad más vulnerable, en especial los polinizadores como las mariposas y las abejas. Located south of the highway, this is the council’s largest free space and it has been equipped with spaces fitted and landscaped for neighbor’s gathering, leisure, and resting activities. Design incorporates the original agricultural terraces and has promoted popular tree-planting of over 1.000 trees. On top of the great variety of vegetation species, the park also includes six insect hotels, to foster the development of most vulnerable biodiversity, specially pollinators such as butterflies and bees.

La singularidad de esta estructura de cerámica armada, junto con su centralidad y la falta de ningún otro espacio de estas dimensiones en el municipio, hacen de él el elemento clave para capitalizar la vida social y cultural de Sant Fruitós de Bages. La urbanización de este espacio público, recientemente llamado Plaza 11 de Septiembre, recupera el valor patrimonial de la cubierta y ofrece todo el equipamiento necesario para un espacio multifuncional de estas características, utilizando materiales y recursos propios de su pasado agrícola. The singularity of this reinforced ceramic structure, together with its centrality and the town’s lack of any other central space with similar dimensions, turn it into the key element around which the cultural and social life of Sant Fruitós de Bages is organized. The arrangement of this public space, recently named as September 11 Square, recuperates the roof’s heritage value and offers all the necessary facilities for such a multifunctional space, taking advantage of materials and resources from its agricultural past.

El 6 de julio de 2017 coincidiendo con la celebración del European Balloon Festival, el Alcalde de Igualada Marc Castells, inauguró el Parque Central donde anunció que esta era la primera fase de un proyecto ambicioso que tiene que convertir esta pieza de la ciudad en un nuevo polo de actividad, que se culminará con la construcción de un ecoducto que permita avanzar en la construcción del anillo verde de Igualada, y garantice la entrada de la biodiversidad existente en el arroyo de Òdena hacia el interior de la ciudad. The first phase for Igualada’s future Central Park. The conditioning for the park’s central sections offers the best scenario to carry out large scale events such as the European Balloon Festival. The grade of an existing slope is thus taken advantage to generate a grandstand where events can be witnessed, while its treatment, including flowering vegetation, turn them into a great pollinator insect garden with butterflies as main characters. On July 6, 2017, coinciding with the European Balloon Festival, Marc Castells, Igualada’s Mayor, opened up Central Park announcing it as the first phase of an ambitious plan aiming at turning this area of the city into a new activity node, culminating with the construction of an ‘ecoduct’ that will foster the construction of Igualada’s green ring, and guarantee the entrance of Odena river’s existing biodiversity into de city.

Estado previo
El ajardinamiento de la explanada de acceso del cementerio se basa en el aprovechamiento de los valores propios del lugar; los valles, las crestas, los bosques y los campos. Mediante el tratamiento de la topografía se consolida el terreno, y se potencia la infiltración del agua y el crecimiento de la vegetación. Diseñado como un campo de lavandas, la gran explanada se convierte en un nuevo jardín que dará la bienvenida a los visitantes del cementerio.
Landscaping for the cemetery’s access esplanade is based on the exploitation of the site’s values; valleys, summits, forests, and fields. The land is consolidated through topography, fostering water infiltration and vegetation growth. Designed as a lavender field, the great esplanade becomes a new garden welcoming the cemetery’s visitors.

La actuación corresponde al desarrollo de la última ampliación de un cementerio inaugurado en 1985, que fue la primera obra construida del despacho. Basada en el respeto y la conservación del medio ambiente en el marco natural del Parque de Collserola, el nuevo paradigma de las sepulturas nos permite realizar una obra vanguardista, ecológica y 100 % biodegradable, formando una construcción con elementos del lugar, que pasa a formar parte de la biodinámica natural del bosque donde se ubica, convertido en una jardín de mariposas y espacio para el velatorio de los difuntos. The intervention regards the development of the last extension -group 6- of a cemetery inaugurated in 1985, the firm’s first built project. Based on the respect and conservation of the environment at Collserola Park natural surroundings, the graves’ new paradigm allows us to accomplish an avant-garde, ecological and 100 % biodegradable work, building with elements from the site. These will become part of the natural biodynamic of the forest where it is located, transformed into a butterfly garden and a space to vigil the dead.

La reforma de la calle supone un cambio de paradigma en la movilidad de todo el barrio. Su principal eje vertebrador, donde antes predominaba el vehículo privado, se transforma en una vía pacificada con plataforma única y sin espacios de estacionamiento. El peatón toma el protagonismo en una nueva vía mucho más cívica y renaturalitzada, que implementa una nueva dinámica del agua de lluvia, potenciando el drenaje a través de las zonas verdes, y su infiltración natural al nivel freático. The street’s rearrangement implies a new mobility paradigm for the whole district. Its main artery, where private vehicle once prevailed, is transformed into a pacified road with a platform and no parking space. Pedestrians gain predominance in a new street, with much more civility and landscaping. The street will implement a new dynamic for rainwater, encouraging drainage through green areas, and its natural infiltration at the water table.

La reforma de este tramo de la Meridiana, entre las calles de Independencia y de Aragón, tendrá carácter de paseo / rambla, convierte la pieza clave en la definición de un nuevo corredor verde para los barrios de San Martín y San Andrés. El nuevo paseo se convierte en la puerta de entrada al nuevo parque de Les Glòries, y su renaturalización promueve la infiltración de la biodiversidad del parque dentro de la ciudad. The rearrangement of this section of Meridiana, between Aragó and Independencia streets will have the character of promenade/ boulevard traits and aims to become the key element defining a new green corridor for Sant Martí and Sant Andreu districts. The new boulevard will signify the entrance to the new Les Glòries park, and its renaturalization fosters the infiltration of the park’s biodiversity into the city.

Esta propuesta aborda la reforma de uno de los principales accesos al casco antiguo de Manresa, y uno de los espacios más degradados y olvidados de la ciudad. La complejidad de desniveles y rasantes, del emplazamiento, se resuelve mediante un despliegue de recursos topográficos que permiten mejorar la accesibilidad de la calle, al tiempo que dignifica las entradas a cada uno de los edificios y locales existentes. This proposal tackles the rearrangement of one of the main access points to Manresa’s old quarter, and one of the most obliterated and forgotten areas in the city. The site’s complex slopes and gradients are solved through a set of topographic actions allowing for the improvement of the street’s accessibility, while at the same time dignifying the entrance of each existing building and store.

Los jardines del actual Asilo Surís se abrirán a la ciudad gracias al derribo de su muro perimetral. Este jardín histórico, y la explanada existente de aparcamiento, se fusionan para configurar un nuevo espacio público de centralidad urbana, el nuevo Parque Central de Sant Feliu. La propuesta hace un gran esfuerzo de reconocimiento de los valores propios del lugar; su patrimonio arquitectónico y natural, su topografía, las visuales de interés ... para configurar una nueva ordenación que respete y ponga en valor la arquitectura modernista existente (futuro centro cívico), a la vez que mantiene el espíritu del jardín e incorpora los nuevos usos, para convertirse en un espacio de referencia dentro del municipio. The wall enclosing the gardens of the current Surís Nursing Home, will be demolished opening them to the city. This historic garden and the existing parking esplanade will blend to configure a new central public space, Sant Feliu’s new Central Park. The proposal is committed to acknowledge the site’s assets; its natural and architectural heritage, its topography, interesting views... to configure a new plan that respects and reassess the existing modernist architecture (future civic center), while it maintains the spirit of the garden and includes new uses, becoming a reference space within the city.

El nuevo parque se sitúa sobre las terrazas agrícolas de un antiguo vivero. El proyecto conserva la estructura original de bancales, y potencia su vegetación con nuevas plantaciones, reinterpretando los patrones agrícolas del lugar, y una ordenación que pone en valor la eficiencia de los sistemas tradicionales de la gestión del agua de lluvia. The new park is located over the agricultural terraces of a former nursery garden. The project preserves the original terrace structure, and boosts their vegetation with new planting, reinterpreting the site’s agricultural patterns, and an arrangement that reassess the efficiency of the traditional rainwater management systems.

El nuevo itinerario de peatones y bicicletas pretende conectar los tres principales puntos de atracción del P.N. de la Garrotxa, La Fageda d’en Jordà, el volcán de Santa Margarita y el Croscat. El nuevo recorrido se configura aprovechando en buena medida trazados de caminos existentes y se define como un trazado sensible a las diferentes peculiaridades y potencialidades del lugar.
The new bicycle and pedestrian path aims at linking the three main attraction poles at Garrotxa Natural Park: Jorda’s beech forest, Santa Margarida volcano and Croscat. The new path is shaped to a great extent by taking advantage of existing trails and is defined as a path sensitive to the different characteristics and assets of the place.

Se han iniciado las obras de uno de los proyectos más importantes para la proyección internacional de la ciudad de Toulouse. El proyecto se inició el año 2011, fruto de un concurso internacional en colaboración con el arquitecto Rem Koolhas (OMA), de reconocido prestigio internacional y premio Pritzker en el año 2000. La obra se prevé que finalice en el año 2019. También hemos iniciado los proyectos de urbanización de los sectores adyacentes, en colaboración con los arquitectos locales Puig Pujol y Taillandier y la Ingeniería Ingerop. Construction has begun on one of Toulouse’s international projection most important projects. The project began in 2011, after an international competition partnering with internationally acclaimed architect Rem Koolhaas (OMA), awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2000. Works are due in 2019. We have also started the urbanization projects of adjacent areas, together with local architects Puig Pujol and Taillandier and engineering firm Ingerop.

Finestrelles Urban Development, Esplugues de Llobregat Proyecto ambicioso que se inició con la redacción, primero, de la Modificación del Plan General, después, del Plan Parcial y finalmente, la redacción del proyecto de urbanización. La transformación de este gran Sector permitirá coser los barrios de Finestrelles y Ciudad Diagonal, y devendrá en la principal puerta de entrada desde la ciudad de Barcelona y de Esplugues de Llobregat al Parc Natural de Collserola. La configuración de sus espacios libres y su tratamiento re-naturalizado se convertirá en un conector social y ecológicos entre la ciudad y la naturaleza. This is an ambitious project we began by drafting the amendments to the Master Plan, later, the Partial Plan and, finally, the urban planning project. The transformation of this large Sector will stitch the Finestrelles and Ciutat Diagonal districts, becoming the main access to Collserola Natural Park from Barcelona and Esplugues. The arrangement of free spaces and landscaping become a social and ecological bridge between city and nature. 67

Plaça de la Vila, at Sant Fruitós de Bages La nueva Plaça de la Villa recupera el carácter del lugar, y pone en valor las preexistencias y los elementos más significativos. La propuesta integra rastros de la parcela Instalación antigua, antiguos muros de mampostería, y una gran tina, para configurar un nuevo espacio público con memoria histórica. El agua es protagonista principal en la configuración de la nueva ordenación, configurando una sucesión de jardines de lluvia que recogen las aguas de escorrentía superficial. The new Plaça de la Vila (Main Square) recovers the site’s character, and it reassesses the preexistence and the most significant elements. The proposal integrates former plot traces, old stone walls, and a large vat, to configure a new public space preserving historic memory. Water plays the main role in the new arrangement, configuring a series of rain gardens that collect superficial overflow water. 68

La propuesta recupera unas antiguas terrazas agrícolas para reconvertirlas en el Parque más grande del Masnou. Un proyecto iniciado el año 2011, que se culmina la segunda fase, donde manteniendo estrategias de sostenibilidad lógica y maximización de la biodiversidad, se dota a la ciudad de un gran espacio para el ocio, con gran variedad de juegos infantiles integrados eficazmente en la naturaleza. The proposal recovers former agricultural terraces to turn them into Masnou’s biggest park. The first phase of this project, started in 2011, was completed in 2016. Maintaining logic sustainability and biodiversity maximization strategies, the city obtains a large leisure space, with a great variety of children playgrounds integrated with nature.

El proyecto es un camino para peatones y bicicletas que conecta la ciudad de Barcelona con Esplugues, de la manera más directa posible, aprovechando los espacios residuales entre las grandes infraestructuras existentes en el cruce entre la B-23 y la B-20. El camino renaturalizado potencia los sistemas de movilidad lenta, y saludable, y rompe la barrera que ha supuesto el nudo viario entre las dos ciudades durante más de 25 años. The project is a bicycle and pedestrian path connecting Barcelona and Esplugues, in the most direct manner possible, taking advantage of left over space between the large existing infrastructures at the crossing between B-23 and B-20. The renaturalized path fosters slow healthy mobility systems breaking the barrier that the road node has implied for over 25 years. 70

La renaturalización del espacio ferroviario permitirá darlo a conocer y crear una atmósfera paisajística ferroviaria integrada en la naturaleza, fortaleciendo la memoria histórica de la ciudad y de la compañía, y generando un nuevo espacio libre para la ciudad diferenciado y con las mejores condiciones bioclimáticas. The project recovers a space for citizen use and leisure explaining and dignifying the (Metro Madrid) company’s heritage elements. Renaturalization of the railway space will allow it to be acknowledged and will create a railway landscaped atmosphere integrated with nature, strengthening the city and the company’s historic memory, and generating a new and unique open space for the city with the best bio-climatic conditions.

El gran reto de la futura Vía Azul del Llobregat supone el desarrollo de más de 140 km de recorrido ciclable desde las Fuentes del Llobregat en Castellar de n’Hug hasta el Pont del Diable a Martorell. Conjuntamente con la red de caminos fluviales del Parque del Río Llobregat (AMB), la nueva vía permitirá recorrer la totalidad de su curso fluvial, convirtiéndose en un recorrido de gran riqueza natural, cultural e histórica. El reto es lograr la continuidad de los caminos existentes, ahora inconexos, y la recuperación de la accesibilidad desde los municipios cercanos hasta el río. The great challenge for Llobregat’s future Blue Trail implies the development of over 140 km of bicycle paths from de Fonts del Llobregat (Llobregat springs) at Castellar de n’Hug to Pont del Diable, in Martorell. Together with the Llobregat River Park (AMB) fluvial trails, the new path will allow the tour of the whole river course, becoming a promenade of a great natural, cultural, and historical value. The challenge lies in the continuity of the existing disconnected paths, and the recovery of access to the river from the closest towns.

Cardener and Anoia Blue Trails El reto de las Vías Azules se amplía con el concurso ganado por la configuración de los trazados de la Anoia y el Cardener. El trazado de la Anoia, de 41 km, transcurre desde la Pobla de Claramunt hasta el Pont del Diable a Martorell a través de las comarcas de Anoia, Alt Penedès y el Baix Llobregat, donde el carácter fluvial se fusiona con los cultivos de viña. Por otra parte, el trazado del Cardener se inicia en el Castillo de Cardona a través del antiguo camino de Barcelona y conecta con la Vía Azul del Llobregat al T.M. de Castellgalí después de más de 52 km de travesía. The Blue Trail challenge expands with the awarded competition for the arrangement of the Cardener and Anoia trails. The 41 km of the Anoia River path runs from Pobla de Claramunt to Pont del Diable at Martorell across the Anoia, Alt Penedès and Baix Llobregat regions, where the fluvial character blends in with the vineyards. On the other hand, the Cardener path begins at Cardona Castle through Barcelona’s old road and connects with the Llobregat Blue Trail at Castellgalí after more than 52 kilometers.

La Urbanización del cubrimiento eliminará la barrera que supone la infraestructura viaria, y conectará el Tejido urbano de ambos lados de la ronda, generando un nuevo espacio libre para la ciudad. El proyecto prevé generar un gran paseo bioclimático donde la presencia de vegetación y Pérgolas fotovoltaicas ofrecerá Mejores condiciones de confort para los Usuarios, y mejorará significativamente la conectividad social, convirtiéndose en un punto de encuentro para los Ciudadanos. First phase of one of Barcelona’s most important strategic plans, where the City Hall wants to promote covering the motorway between Gracia, Horta-Guinardó and Nou Barris districts. The arrangement of the coverage would eliminate the barrier created by the road infrastructure and will link the urban fabric on both sides of the motorway, generating a new open space for the city. The project plans to create a large bio-climatic boulevard where vegetation and photovoltaic pergolas will offer the best comfort conditions for users, and will significantly improve social connectivity, becoming a meeting point for citizens.

El año 2017 ha colaborado a seguir ampliando el portfolio de edificios de Batlleiroig que ya contenía un espectro de tipologías y tamaños muy variados. Edificios como la nueva Sede Central de Stradivarius para el grupo Inditex en el Parc del Alba, un edificio de 40.000 m2 que se enmarca en el contexto del “Business & Biodiversity” y que con una fachada “smart” y dinámica” que se adapta a las condiciones ambientales de cada momento permitiendo generar ahorros muy significativos en los consumos energéticos. 2017 has contributed to keep increasing Batlleiroig building portfolio already including a varied specter of scales and typologies. Buildings like the new Headquarters of Stradivarius is located in the Alba Park of Cerdanyola del Vallés, a 45.170 sq. meter building framed in the “Business & Biodiversity” context with a “smart and dynamic” facade that constantly adapts to climate conditions and allows for significant energy consumption reduction.

muy diversos. Within the Office building category we have recently completed the Luxa complex for Castellví group. Located in Barcelona´s 22@ district the 26,390 sq. meter compound is made out of two independent buildings hosting the offices for Amazon and the first co-working space in Barcelona by American firm “We-Work”. The unitarian whole is made up of two independent volumes that leave the plot’s corner empty complementing the actual urban condition and improving the quality of the adjacent public space. Close by to the previous project, the new SBGlow Hotel has recently been finished completion the offer for diverse programs at 22@ with 235 rooms and gastronomic space on the ground floor and the top floor which also hosts a
swimming pool with great views of the city’s downtown. In the private housing department we have completed two developments of 29 and 10 units each for Castellví group. We are specially thrilled by the completion of a 19 villa housing compound integrated in nature within the natural environment of the San Sebastià lighthouse at Llafranc for Dollus Iberia. Culminating a 10 year plus process since the first urban procedures began. All this works allow Batlleiroig to keep consolidating one of its most important assets, the large accumulation of knowledge through the experience of built projects, expanding the “Batlleiroig knowhow” that in turn increases our leverage to provide solutions and response to future projects with diverse typology and scale.

También dentro de la categoría de Oficinas hemos finalizado el complejo Luxa en el 22@ para el grupo Castellví, una promoción de 16.000 m2 que desarrolla 2 edificios independientes que albergarán las oficinas de Amazon y el primer coworking de la firma americana “We-Work” en Barcelona. El resultado conforma un conjunto unitario que identifica dos piezas independientes que mediante el vaciado de la esquina de la parcela ayudan a la construcción de la ciudad y mejoran la calidad del espacio público adyacente. Muy cerca del anterior proyecto se ha finalizado el nuevo Hotel SB Glow que completa la oferta de programas diversos del 22@, con 235 habitaciones y espacios gastronómicos en planta baja y planta cubierta y con una piscina con vistas panorámicas al centro de la ciudad. En el sector residencial privado destaca la finalización de 2 promociones de 29 y 10 viviendas en Barcelona para el Grupo Castellví. Especial ilusión ha hecho la finalización de un conjunto residencial integrado en la naturaleza de 19 villas en el marco paisajístico cercano al Far de San Sebastià, en Llafranc, para Dollus Iberia, culminando un proceso de más de 10 años desde que se iniciaron los primeros trámites urbanísticos. Todas estas obras permiten a Batlleiroig seguir consolidando uno de sus activos más importantes y que mejor le caracteriza, la gran acumulación de conocimiento a través de la experiencia de proyectos construidos, enriqueciendo el “know-how Batlleiroig” que a su vez actuará de palanca que permitirá seguir dando respuesta y solución a proyectos futuros de tipología y tamaño

La apuesta de la firma por la continuidad de las personas dentro de la organización ha dado como fruto un equipo compacto, con talento y con una cultura corporativa muy fuerte representada por un núcleo de arquitectos con más de 10 años de experiencia que conforman la espina dorsal del equipo y que garantizan una transmisión óptima del “know how” a los nuevos y jóvenes arquitectos que se incorporan a la empresa. Los edificios proyectados por Batlleiroig responden siempre a las necesidades de los clientes y a requerimientos funcionales, normativos y técnicos. El diseño parte del reconocimiento a estos requerimientos para que posteriormente la creatividad añada valor a la respuesta de estos criterios obteniendo como resultado proyectos que aúnan lógica y diseño de manera equilibrada. El resultado de esta visión nos ha permitido seguir ganando concursos a lo largo de este 2017, entre los que destacan la Nueva Sede de Médicos sin Fronteras en Barcelona, un Centro Cívico público en Sant Joan Despí y una torre de 62 viviendas de la Plaza Europa para Aedas Homes.

Buildings designed by Batlleiroig always respond to client’s needs and functional, regulation, and technical requirements. Design arises from the recognition of these requirements and later creativity adds value responding to these criteria, obtaining as a result projects combining logic and design in a balanced manner. This vision has allowed us to keep winning competitions along 2017, among those which stand out are the New Headquarters for Doctors without Borders in Barcelona, a public Civic Center in Sant Joan Despí and a 62 dwelling tower in Plaza Europa for Aedas Homes.

Para Batlleiroig cada proyecto es único y el resultado se compone por un lado de las necesidades del cliente y por el otro lado del análisis del contexto físico donde se implantan los edificios. Esta fórmula nos permite garantizar resultados personalizados, contextualizados y exclusivos. Como ejemplo de este principio destacamos el edificio actualmente en construcción de Parc Glories desarrollado para Colonial, un edificio que se adapta al contexto urbano defiendo una fachada vegetal que se relaciona con el parque al que se enfrenta, que se adapta al contexto histórico de Barcelona mediante el uso de la cerámica como material protagonista de la fachada y que se adapta a las necesidades del cliente desarrollando plantas diáfanas de oficinas de 1.500 m2 libres de pilares. At Batlleiroig every project is unique and the outcome is given on one hand by the client’s needs and on the other hand by the analysis of the physical context where buildings stand. This formula allows us to guarantee tailored, contextualized and exclusive results. As an example of this principle we can highlight the Parc Glories building for Colonial, currently under construction. A building that adapts to the urban context defining a green facade that relates to the park before it. It adapts to Barcelona’s historic context through the use of ceramics as its facade’s main material and to the client’s needs developing 1,500 sq. meters open plan offices with no pillars.

Siempre inquietos por mejorar procesos y eficiencia, Batlleiroig es una firma pionera en la implantación de BIM, ya en 2014 apostó de manera importante por su implantación mediante un proceso muy sólido de formación interna. Esta apuesta ha dado sus frutos: hoy en día es la firma de Arquitectura de Barcelona con mayor cantidad de m2 realizados
en BIM - 420.000. Un total de 27 proyectos de los cuales 7 ya han sido completados (120.000 m2) 11 están en fase de construcción y 9 en fase de diseño (con un total de 300.000 m2). In order to achieve a complete and rigorous high quality project, Batlleiroig treat with maximum rigor and proficiency not only the architectural aspect of building, but develop complementary disciplines such as technical services, structure, vegetation, or sustainability (LEED or BREAM) and well-being (Well) certifications. Two projects currently under construction that will achieve LEED Platinum certification stand out in this regard: Parc Glories at Barcelona’s 22@ district and the new administrative campus for the Catalan Government at the Zona Franca district in Barcelona built by “AXA Real Estate” which will also include the Well certification.

Los hechos han demostrado que las grandes corporaciones apuestan por edificios diseñados por Batlleiroig ya sea mediante su promoción directa, como Stradivarius, Inditex o Médicos sin Fronteras o alquilándolos a algunos de nuestros clientes tal como han hecho organizaciones como Amazon, King, Shibsted o la propia Generalitat de Catalunya. Asimismo, cabe destacar que uno de los proyectos diseñados por Batlleiroig ha protagonizado una de las compraventas más importantes del sector durante este año, donde el Grupo Castellví ha vendido a Catalana Occidente el complejo LUXA por 93 millones de euros. Después de acumular mucha experiencia en la definición de espacios interiores de muchos de sus edificios, Batlleiroig ha decidido apostar por el desarrollo de un equipo que se dedique exclusivamente a este tipo de encargos, un equipo al que ha denominado Batlleiroig Inside que estará liderado por Marta Peinado, quien ha participado activamente en los trabajos de interiorismo de la Nueva Sede de Stradivarius. El objetivo es dar una respuesta completa y más profesional a este tipo de proyectos que requieren de una visión muy centrada en los usuarios y su forma de habitar los espacios. After accumulating a vast experience in the definition of interior spaces of many of its buildings, Batlleiroig has committed to develop a team solely focused on this type of commissions. The team named as Batlleiroig Inside will be led by Marta Peinado, who has actively participated in the interior design project for the new Stradivarius Headquarters. Artículo de Antoni Monté La obra presentada es un centro comercial ubicado en Viladecans, situado en el límite urbano entre la ciudad y el parque agrario del Baix Llobregat. El centro comercial llamado ‘The Style Outlets’ se ha diseñado incorporando sistemas y materiales, ecológicos y sostenibles, con el objetivo de realizar una obra más respetuosa con el medio ambiente y con las personas. La obra se sitúa en el nuevo sector de Ca n’Alemany, un polígono urbanizado entre el 2015 y el 2016, entre la riera de Sant Llorenç y la autovía C-32, en el extremo sur de la ciudad de Viladecans. Todos los viales de este sector han sido elevados entre 3 y 6 metros por encima de la cota original del parque agrario, con el fin de evitar las inundaciones y los desbordamientos de las rieras durante las avenidas de los periodos de lluvia extraordinarios. En este sentido cabe destacar que el centro comercial y el aparcamiento exterior, se sitúan a una cota inferior a la de los viales, en buena parte del perímetro de la parcela. Estas características topográficas e hidrológicas tan singulares, han condicionado un diseño en el que destacamos la red de aguas pluviales: un innovador sistema de drenajes urbanos sostenible (SUDS) basado en el ciclo natural del agua.
Es un sistema SUDS integral que abarca todas las fases del ciclo del agua: desde su captación durante las precipitaciones, hasta su infiltración en el subsuelo, favoreciendo otros aspectos tan importantes como la minimización de las escorrentías superficiales, y la retención y acumulación de agua para su reutilización en usos compatibles, como el riego de las zonas ajardinadas. El sistema de drenajes SUDS se extiende a lo largo del edificio comercial y del aparcamiento exterior ajardinado, con el objetivo de captar el 100% del agua de lluvia de la parcela. Incorpora distintas soluciones, en función de las necesidades requeridas, y de las oportunidades que ofrece la parcela y su entorno inmediato. El objetivo es infiltrar el agua en el sitio y evitar su vertido indiscriminado a la red de alcantarillado del sector de Ca n’Alemany. La intervención se enmarca en el nuevo paradigma de la sostenibilidad lógica. Se utilizan materiales naturales y materiales industriales avanzados, que combinados mejoran el rendimiento del sistema de gestión de las aguas pluviales, y ofrecen otros beneficios ambientales: evitan la isla de calor (tan acusada en las playas de aparcamiento al aire libre y de los centros comerciales abiertos), y favorecen la recarga de los niveles freáticos
del subsuelo. Cabe destacar que la obra, del centro comercial y el espacio de aparcamiento y ajardinamiento exterior, han obtenido el certificado internacional de construcción sostenible ‘Bream’ con categoría: Muy bueno. Report: The following work is a shopping center at Viladecans, located on the edge between the city and the Baix Llobregat Agricultural park. ‘The Style Outlets’ shopping center has been designed integrating ecological and sustainable systems and materials, aiming to produce a more respectful building with people and the environment. The building is located on the new ‘Ca n’Alemany’ sector, a estate developed during 2015 and 2016, between the Sant Llorenç river and the C-32 motorway, at the southern edge of the city of Viladecans. all the road network has been raised between 3 and 6 meters above the original level of the agricultural park, to avoid floods and overflow of the rivers during extraordinary rainfall periods. In this regard, we must point out how the shopping center and the outdoor parking lot are placed, in a large part of its perimeter, at a lower level than those of the sector’s roads. These singular topographic and hydrologic conditions have conditioned a design where the rainwater network stands out: an innovative sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) based on water’s natural cycle. It is a comprehensive SUDS system encompassing all phases of the water cycle: from rainwater collection, to underground infiltration, favoring other important aspects such as reducing surface runoffs, and the retention and accumulation of water to reuse it in compatible uses such as irrigation of garden areas. El sistema de recogida y de infiltración natural de agua de lluvia del Outlet de Viladecans tiene un diseño que se inspira en el funcionamiento hídrico de los espacios agrícolas, como el del parque agrario del Baix Llobregat. Este funcionamiento evita las soluciones convencionales, que provocan grandes escorrentías, desbordamientos de las rieras y de las redes de alcantarillado, además del sobrecalentamiento del ambiente causado por el efecto ‘isla de calor’. El análisis del comportamiento, del sistema construido, durante un día de lluvia real, muestra aprovechamientos hídricos directos del 90%, frente al 0%,
que se obtiene en un sistema convencional. Del mismo modo se comprueba que la evacuación directa a la red de alcantarillado es del 0%, frente al 100% de los sistemas convencionales. El día analizado es el 13 de febrero del 2017 con una lluvia de 15 l/m², valor que corresponde con la lluvia más habitual del municipio, y que además, coincide con su pluviometría media anual. Viladecans Outlet’s system for collection and natural infiltration of rainfall design is inspired in the hydrological behavior of agricultural spaces such as the Baix Llobregat Agricultural park. This system avoids conventional solutions provoking great runoffs, drainage network and
creek overflows, and overheating caused by ‘heat islands’. Analyzing the behavior of the built system on a day with real rain displays a 90% direct hydric profit against 0% obtained by a conventional system. At the same time, direct evacuation to the sewage system is at 0% against 100% of conventional systems. El objetivo del diseño del sistema de drenaje es aprovechar el 100% de agua de lluvia, y evitar el vertido de agua a la red pública. La forma del edificio, sus cubiertas y espacios exteriores, así como las rasantes del aparcamiento y los parterres ajardinados, responden a una construcción con una geometría pensada como superficies de captación de agua de lluvia. La parcela tiene una superficie total de 65.696 m2 y está ocupada parcialmente por el edificio del centro comercial 27.348 m2. El resto de la parcela se aprovecha como aparcamiento en superficie, con parterres ajardinados en su perímetro, y a lo largo de las franjas de aparcamiento. La captación de agua de lluvia se da en las cubiertas y en el paseo exterior del ‘mall’ comercial, y se recoge para su aprovechamiento, sin evacuarla a la red de aguas pluviales del sector. Una parte se acumula para ser reutilizada en el sistema de riego de las zonas ajardinadas, y el excedente se redistribuye en el sistema de infiltración y de retención del aparcamiento exterior.
La innovación recae en unas rasantes diseñadas sin resaltes, con pendientes suaves, y en unos acabados superficiales, a base de pavimentos duros, semiblandos, y blandos, todos permeables. Contrariamente al diseño de un aparcamiento convencional, en este caso se ha ejecutado toda la superficie sin resaltes, ni rejas interceptoras. El agua de escorrentía se distribuye por toda la superficie con pendientes suaves, evitando la velocidad, y favoreciendo la infiltración a través de los pavimentos permeables. El agua infiltrada circula por debajo del pavimento, por los estratos inferiores, a través de los materiales porosos que actúan como base de los firmes, y que permiten la retención de buena parte del agua de lluvia y de su posterior retorno al subsuelo. The goal of the drainage system design is to use 100% of rainwater, and avoid the leakage of water to the public network. The building’s shape, its roofs and exterior spaces, as well as the parking lot gradient and the landscaped flower beds, respond to a construction with a
geometry conceived as rainwater collection surfaces. The site has a total surface of 65,696 sq. meters and is partially occupied by the 27,348 sq. meter shopping center building. The remaining surface of the lot is used by the open parking and landscaped flower bed on its perimeter along the parking stripes. The rainwater is collected on the roof and the exterior promenade of the shopping mall, and it is channeled for its reuse, not evacuating them towards the estate’s rainwater drainage system. Part of it is stored to be reused in the irrigation system of the landscaped areas and the remaining quantity is distributed among the infiltration and retention system of the outdoor parking. Innovation lies in gradients defined by gentle slopes with no protrusions and permeable surface finnishing wether they have hard, soft, or semi-soft pavement, all permeable. Unlike conventional parking design, the whole surface has been produced without protrusions, nor intercepting drains. The run-off water is distributed along the whole surface with gentle slopes, avoiding it to run quickly, favoring infiltration through

it allows for the infiltration and helps reduce the speed for superficial runoff. The 625 outdoor parking (6,892 sq. meters) have been done with a mixed pavement by Torho, combining 60% hard surface for vehicle use, and free spaces allowing for infiltration in 40% of the whole surface. for prairie planting in the pavement voids convey a natural and green aspect to the whole parking space. Flower beds with shrubs and palm trees have been placed between parking spots and along the site’s perimeter. 5,218 sq. meters of permeable surface. These garden areas have been optimized with a number of red gravel beds with a Ø5/10 mm e=10 cm grading, evenly distributed to increase the

104 water’s infiltration speed through the pavement’s sandy strata. Constructive stratification contributes to the natural filtration of water. From the finishing surface to the pavement base, stratification is as follows: a superficial layer of vegetable substrate e=10 cm, a sand bed gradient Ø3/5 mm e=3 cm, a geotextile sheet, and an inferior gravel bed gradient Ø50/70 mm e=20cm; the whole system has a gentle and continuous slope between 1 and 4%. The porosity gradient degrades pollutants and purifies water, and it provides the capacity to accumulate suspended water up to 30% of the volume of this inferior strata.
El sistema se optimiza con los elementos especiales hidrobox, de 450x500 mm de sección y una porosidad del 94%. El sistema de celdas Hidrostank se sitúa en los puntos bajos de los lechos de grava, y generan un recorrido lineal interconectado, que absorbe el agua que ya no se puede drenar al subsuelo cuando este está saturado. Estos elementos, de gran capacidad de acumulación de agua, 650 m3 en su conjunto, mejoran significativamente la capacidad de retención del sistema, y permite la infiltración diferida, después del periodo de lluvias, cuando el suelo admite de nuevo la infiltración natural.
La velocidad lenta del agua dentro del sistema favorece su retorno al subsuelo. El sistema se completa con un conjunto de rebosaderos, situados a una interdistancia de 20 m, sobre pozos de recarga directa de freático, que conectan el nivel superior de las celdas, con el primer nivel freático existente a unos 4/5 m de profundidad. Además, el sistema de drenaje incorpora un depósito para el riego, dimensionado para recuperar 120 m3 de agua recogida en las cubiertas de los edificios. A su vez, el depósito está equipado con dos rebosaderos para reintroducir el excedente de agua de lluvia, directamente al sistema de infiltración del

Slow water speed within the system fosters its return to the undersoil. The system is completed with a number of overflows every 20 meters, with direct phreatic refill wells connecting the cells upper levels with the first existing phreatic level 4/5 meters deep. On top of this, the project’s draining system adds an irrigation deposit storing 120 m3 of water collected by the buildings’ roofs. This deposit is also fitted with two overflows for excess rainwater, directly connected with the infiltration system of the landscaped parking lot.

aparcamiento ajardinado. The system is optimized with special 450x500mm hydrobox elements with A 94% porosity. The Hydrostank cell system is placed on the lower levels of the gravel beds, generating a linear and interconnected path, absorbing water that cannot be drained to the under-soil when it becomes saturated during long rainfall periods. This elements, with a large water accumulation capacity, a total of 650 m3, significantly improved the system’s retention capability and allows deferred infiltration, after rain episodes, when soil admits once again natural infiltration.

The draining system
El sistema de drenajes
105 El sistema de drenajes suds incorpora dos rebosaderos que conectan directamente con la balsa de laminación del sector de ca n’alemany. Esta solución está prevista para los periodos excepcionales de lluvia torrencial, o de lluvias sostenidas, y permite laminar el excedente de agua dentro del sector. Cuando el sistema está lleno, y el subsuelo de la parcela ya no admite más agua porqué está saturado, los dos rebosaderos que conectan con la balsa de laminación, entran en funcionamiento, y evitan que el agua aflore en superficie e inunde la parcela. Las conexiones están realizadas con dos tubos de Ø630 mm equipados con una válvula antiretorno que solo permite la salida de agua a la balsa, e impide que el agua de la balsa pueda entrar al sistema de drenaje de la parcela. Finalmente, el cerramiento
perimetral del aparcamiento está configurado con un muro de gaviones de altura variable, entre 0,5 y 9 m, que resuelve el desnivel entre el interior de la parcela y los viales del sector. Existe un punto bajo en el extremo suroeste, donde el aparcamiento y la acera del vial están al mismo nivel. En este punto bajo, se ha ejecutado una solución particular con un gavión vacío, sin piedra, que actúe como rebosadero último del sistema de drenaje, para facilitar la escorrentía superficial en un caso muy extraordinario, evitando la inundación de la parcela. The draining system contains two overflows directly connected with the laminaton pond of the ca n’alemany sector. This solution is planned for exceptional heavy or sustained rainfalls and it allows lamination of excess water within the estate. When the system is full, the site’s undersoil no longer admits more water
because it is also saturated; the two overflows connecting the sector’s lamination pond start working, avoiding water to surface and flood the site. The connections are made with two Ø630 mm tubes equipped with a non-return valve allowing water to exit only, and avoid water from the pond to enter the site’s draining system. Finally, the parking’s perimeter enclosure is built with a wall of variable height gabions, between 0,5 and 9 meters solving the height difference between the site’s interior and the sector’s road system. There is a low spot at the south-west corner where the outdoor parking and the road’s sidewalk lie at the same level. On this lowest point, a particular solution has been produced: an empty gabion with no stones, acts as the ultimate overflow of the draining system, allowing superficial run-off on an extraordinary case, avoiding the site to flood.

También se ha analizado un día real de lluvia torrencial, el 24 de marzo del 2017 con 115 l/m² de lluvia, récord histórico para un día de lluvia del mes de marzo en Viladecans. Los resultados fueron muy buenos, porque en ningún caso se observaron acumulaciones de agua en superficie, ni escorrentías superficiales significativas. La observación del excedente de agua saliendo a través de las válvulas antiretorno de la conexión a la balsa de laminación, es la confirmación del correcto funcionamiento del sistema. Cabe destacar, también, que el rebosadero de emergencia del gavión vacío, no entró en funcionamiento, en ningún caso. We also analyzed a real heavy rain day, march 24, 2017 with 115 l/m2 rainfall, historic record of a rainy March day at Viladecans. The results were very good, in no case were there noticeable surface water accumulations, nor were there significant superficial run-offs. The observation of excess water coming out of the non-return valves connecting to the lamination pond confirm the correct functioning of the system. Remarkably, the empty gabion emergency overflow did not have to function at all.

La experiencia de los primeros meses con el sistema en funcionamiento, y con un régimen de lluvias generosas han permitido comprobar las bondades de las soluciones técnicas, aplicadas en la ejecución de este innovador sistema de drenaje de aguas pluviales. El éxito ha resultado ser un estímulo para todos los técnicos y empresas participantes en la obra, y complace decir que se han conseguido los objetivos principales: Aprovechamiento del agua de lluvia = 100% + Vertido de agua de lluvia a la red de alcantarillado = 0 Litros The experience of the first months with the system working, with generous rain regime, allowed us to check the virtues of the technical solutions, applied in the execution of this innovative rainwater drainage system. What is an Insect Hotel? The objective is to provide an artificial habitat for those animals, which due to landscape anthropization, have difficulty finding it.
Drink
A specific habitat has been built for each insect generating nidification spaces and a hibernation refuge.
Water lamination, retention & infiltration in the landscape is necessary for all ecological processes, particularly for the insect’s ecosystem.
The insect hotel is ecologically connected with large vegetable masses though the planting of endogenous spices that ensure a year round blooming period.

Dormitory Insect Hotel is built by residual organic matter recycling stemming from nearby parks and green areas have been used to amplify animal life around the insect hotel. Local materials that have been collected manually will be composted to house animal life. Insect Hotel location of Vallmora park.

Food In order to attract the major number of species, continuous layers of vegetation have been planted: bushes, fields, trees and fruit trees. Each vegetable specie has been selected to attract a specific specie of insect:

Bees feed on nectar from flowers. Wasps feed on fruits from fruit trees. Spiders, ants, centipedes, praying mantis feed on leafs and grass. Ladybird feed on grass seeds and decomposed organic matter.
Drink Drainage improvement within the park’s premises has reduced the amount of sewerage construction and therefore enhanced biodiversity.

Retention Efficient drainages that strengthen water retention within the park’s soil promote the reintroduction of amphibian and insect back to its environment. Infiltration Through infiltration the aquifer can be recharged, restoring the subterranean water flow and increasing the plant species growth, and therefore the source of nutrition of animals. Lamination The reduction of speed and amount of storm water though lamination increases the parks and city’s resilience.

What are the benefits?
2017 Awarded Projects Insects Hotel
Increasing diversity of insects helps us to grow healthier plants and increase the biodiversity of our landscape helping us with sanitary management of our cities. Through pollination, insects allow the fructification of the species that feed us, such as fruit and vegetables, and help seed production of many wild plants. In addition, the insects attracted by the hotel are pest predators that affect both crops and gardens, becoming an indispensable element of these populations. Finally, it can be used as a pedagogical tool that allows citizens to closely observe the cycle of insects, as well as the collection of scientific data.
Conclusions An Insect Hotel enhances biodiversity and auxiliary fauna presence, which help us with the sanitary management of our cities and our agriculture land. Is also a pedagogical tool, with educational interest.
