The
Foundation One of LBI’s cultural gems is its “Foundation of the Arts & Sciences” in Loveladies (lbifoundation.org and 609.494.1241). This not-for-profit organization, often referred to as “the Foundation” or “the L.B.I.F.,” sits on property stretching from the Boulevard to the Barnegat Bay and includes 26 acres of protected wetland.
By: Jen Begonia
The Foundation’s facilities include a huge, loftlike gallery space for art exhibitions, performances, and entertainment; marine science and summer camp buildings; an open kitchen designed for culinary arts teaching; a playground and several gardens; nine HarTru tennis courts; a silkscreening studio; a painter’s loft; and a professional ceramics studio with resident artists and craftspeople active year-round. Beach access (with Long Beach Township badges in season) is available via a public street reached by pedestrian walkway from the parking lot, and the salt marshes of Barnegat Bay can be examined up close on the Foundation’s wooden boardwalk (a short walk through the woods) or from multiple elevated decks. Established in 1948 with a vision of providing summer arts residencies and instruction, the organization has a decades-old artistic heritage that includes shows by famed artists like Robert Smithson, Cristo, and Richard Serra. It now offers year-round public programming across a wide array of artistic, scientific, and recreational interests. Volunteer committees, passionate members, business sponsors, dedicated staff, and professional instructors seek together to provide authentic recreational value connected to LBI, the Barnegat bayshed, and beyond.
12
Major summer events at the LBIF include the annual House Tour, Barnegat Bay Day, and a series of juried or curated art gallery exhibitions with public openings. Thriving themed camps and programs engage kids aged three through teen from the end of June through August. Yoga, culinary, and water-related classes offer the chance for anyone to expand an existing practice or try something new. For details and current updates, access the Foundation’s summer catalog, available online through lbifoundation.org.
Bottom line, anyone on LBI can find SOMETHING TO DO at the Foundation: Seeking action on the court? Check out the Foundation’s beautifully maintained HarTru courts. Recreation members are supported by an in-season pro, concierge, and assistant to help line up games and schedule courts.
Looking for an unusual date night? Eat at one of the north end’s restaurants before or after “getting dirty” in the Foundation’s ceramics studio, or hit Veteran’s Bicentennial Park in Beach Haven to watch one of a series of Foundation-coordinated summer movies on the beach.
Who are the
Foundation’s members?
Weekly renters, seasonal homeowners, LBI visitors, and year-round “locals” make the most of this community resource through membership. Although tennis or “recreation” memberships come with the steepest price tag ($1050 for a new recreation membership), all levels of membership are at least partially tax-deductible since they support the not-for-profit mission of the Foundation. Membership includes benefits like free entry to special events, discounts on classes and programming, and even (starting 2014) discounts at area businesses. Parents, note that the savings on one week of summer camp plus the tax deduction just about pay for an annual family membership!
Day-tripping to the Lighthouse? Before or after visiting Old Barney, stop to check out crafts for sale, cool off in the gallery while admiring art from near and far, take a self-guided walk of sculptures throughout the grounds, or visit the coastal rain garden.
Want time to enjoy the coastline? Drop the kids off at camp 9am-12pm (available at weekly rates) and bring your chair across to the public Long Beach Township beach across the way, hang out in the secret bayside garden near the ceramics kilns, or meander out to the bay with your kayak or paddleboard.

Beach Haven
Sporting beautiful Victorian architecture, great nightlife and pristine beaches, Beach Haven has it all. Families abound on the beaches here and for good reason. There is plenty of night-time entertainment for the young ones including Fantasy Island, Bay Village, and the Flow House, an indoor rideable wave pool. If you are hungry stop by the Chicken or the Egg or the Holiday Snack Bar for a great lunch. If you are lookingfor a more formal meal, try The Gables or Engleside Inn. There are great bar deals at The Shell, The Ketch or The Marlin. If you want to grab a beer with friends and play some shuffleboard, check out The Hudson House for a more laid back night.

Holgate Although far from the bridge, Holgate, like Barnegat Light, sports a great amount of natural beauty. Holgate’s beaches are in a word, pristine. Stroll along the beach and take in the breathtaking views of both the surf and not so far away Atlantic City. The bird sanctuary at the south end of Holegate will offer you the unique experience to possibly observe a rare Piping Plover. The “Wooden Jetty” offers some of the best surfing on the island and this spot is easily observable from the large parking lot at the end of Holgate. Although Holgate was hit very hard by Sandy, much progress has been made and this town offers a natural and quiet alternative to the busier of LBI’ s beaches. There is a great family owned and operated deli on the boulevard where you can get a tasty lunch if you are hungry. Watch out for the greenheads on those west wind days!

Brant Beach Brant Beach is located near the busy center of the island yet it is quite laidback and quiet. It usually does not get too crowded, however you will never be alone. The Brant Beach Yacht Club has a great sailing program and the nearby beaches abound with BB Yacht Club kids. The beaches were recently replenished so there is plenty of space to set up a blanket and sprawl out. Grab a sandwich at Subs Up, a hot dog at Dom’s or a cocktail at Daddy-O’s. Take a leisurely bike ride on the Ocean road and check out the quaint homes along the way.

Surf City
Conveniently located close to the bridge and many other points of interest, Surf City offers an abundance of things to do. The beaches are beautiful and there are numerous restaurants and shops from which to choose. You will notice that the beaches host people from every age group. You can grab a sandwich at Subbogies, play some mini golf or rent a jet ski and take on the bay if you would like an alternative to the beach. If not, you will be well-cared for by the experienced staff of the Surf City Beach Patrol. In short, Surf City is a great all around beach.

Barnegat Light Despite the fact that BL is a fairly long ride from the bridge, it is bustling with activity. The beaches have about a mile of beautiful dunes that are home to many birds and even Red Tail Fox! If you don’t like trudging through the sand to the beach, take advantage of the free trailer shuttle. Barnegat Light beaches are great for an early morning walk, as many interesting shells and objects tend to wash up just short of the big inlet jetty.

The Mating Season
More and more couples are choosing Long Beach Island, New Jersey for their wedding day. The island has become the go to destination for NYC, Philly and New Jersey nuptials. LBI is a natural for a beach wedding, 18 miles of pristine Atlantic Ocean beach, and sunsets over Barnegat Bay. This beautifully restored Victorian New Jersey inn located in historic Beach Haven, NJ on LBI provides just the right setting for an intimate wedding and reception. The entire inn can accommodate over 100 for a sitdown reception, and of course our highly talented Executive Chef, Richard Diemer and his culinary team can be relied upon for catering this important event. The Works of Michael Ryan Architects
62
By: Michael Ryan
Opting to showcase projects in a way that would invite the viewer, six residential projects were chosen to reveal the diversity of the work and how the homes related to their particular circumstances of creation: three from the beach and three in the country. We work together, my wife Randee and I. As her interior design work complements and extends the architecture, she helped to shape this book in significant ways, lobbying for large format images consistent with this goal. I began to write with an eye to the projects’ “backstories”, and the houses reemerged as a direct result of the stories.
Photography By Halkin/Mason Photography By Paul Warchol
Three years ago, I decided to pursue the task of writing a book about the work of my firm, Michael Ryan Architects. Published last year, the book wanders from the format of a catalogue or portfolio and is aptly titled UNEXPEXT. We all agreed that the book should be designed to reach an audience of clients and enthusiasts, as well as architects and designers.

Shown to the right are the three beach houses featured in the book.

Another influence explored in the book is a brief biography of my relationship to architecture. The introspection that is required for this led me to realize something about a common element in most houses: the stair. I’ve been told that I have an obsession with stairs and have tried to justify this in acceptable phrasing like: “They are transient spaces, and are experienced by moving through them, unlike rooms”. All of which is true, but it became clear that it is also linked to the stairs in my childhood house, which were not transient at all. The first two steps and landing is where guests sat. The landing was a chair and the setting for numerous photographs; relatives framed with the stair’s backdrop.
The Stair is an opportunity to craft a significant interior element in a way that is unique to house itself, becoming a significant aspect of its identity. It is also a space that can offer light to numerous floors, depending on how it is glazed, the treatment of the stair elements themselves, and the integration of surrounding rooms.
“ I think I’m just a frustrated Architect.”……A number of clients have said this to me in various ways, often at the initial meeting. My standard response is: “Really?, so am I.” Photography By Halkin/Mason

Houses designed by architects for particular sites and clients are rare. Architects have a particular relationship to creating houses, as they have traditionally been a laboratory for their primary ideas about form, materials, and ethics. From the Client’s perspective, a very small percentage of the population will take on this opportunity. Our contemporary culture places an often unfortunate emphasis on “knowing what you want” and “being smart”. Unfortunately, this can work against a design process that works toward an understanding of the potential that truly exists, filtering reality from fantasy; and alternately, creating fantasy from reality.
It’s important for the homeowners to have an open mind looking for discovery and surprise. It’s all about letting go. They are faced with the potential of making a place that reflects their view of the surroundings, the environment, and their relationships with family, friends and the broader community.

Long Beach Island is a unique environment that supports explorations in architecture, with a history of experimental design starting in the 1950’s. Architects were now using traditional materials to create modern forms. The houses began to respond directly to their environment. Before this time, it was not unheard of for owners to simply build a second version of their suburban home at the beach. The new houses acknowledged the social reality of beach living as something more casual and open. They also addressed the assets of the climate and views.
“For me, this was the main draw: to work in this environment, hands-on, with clients relaxed about issues of style.” Photography By Floto Warner

How To:
1 2 5 72
The first step is to buy your clams. People often prefer “Little Necks” because they are smaller, less chewy, and have a milder flavor when compared to larger clams. You can also purchase “middle necks” which are somewhat larger but still small enough to be eaten “on the half shell”. The average person can eat anywhere from 6 to 20 raw clams so make sure you buy enough.
shuck a clam By: Scott Dunleavy
3
In order to shuck clams you will need to purchase a clam knife. You can purchase these at any fishing tackle store, online or at some fish markets. I personally prefer clam knives made by Dexter Russell. These knives are the perfect size and are made in the USA. If your knife makes it between the two shells you are successful. If not, grab another clam and try again. Be sure that you are attempting to shuck the correct end of the clam. This small mistake has created much frustration in the early days of my shucking and is one of the most common mistakes. If you try multiple clams and you can’t seem to get the knife through, consider putting your clams back on ice for a while.
Shucking a clam can sometimes be a difficult or frustrating activity if you have not been taught the correct way to do so. The following article will provide you with all of the information you will need to shuck and serve this delicious Barnegat Bay table fare in its raw form.
6
After I buy my clams I like to throw them into an ice water bath. This usually shocks the clams, making them easier to shuck. If you notice any clams that are open, be sure to throw them away. This is a sign that they are dead and are thus a “bad clam.” After you soak the clams in ice water for about ten minutes take them out and begin shucking.
4
Once your knife makes it between the two shells you will need to cut the adductor muscles. These two muscles located on either end of the clam are what keep it together. Once you have severed both muscles on either end you will be able to open the clam.
7
Place the clam in the palm of your non-dominant hand. The curved joint known as the Umbo should point into your palm. Next place the knife’s edge in the small opening near the clam shell’s “foot”. With your middle, ring, and pinky fingers, squeeze the dull end of the blade so that it forces the sharp end in between the two shells.
Raw clams are great when served with lemon, hot sauce, horseradish sauce or cocktail sauce. Be sure to try and share some this summer.
The final step is to run your knife along the inside of both clamshells in order to get as much of the abductor muscles and clam “mantle” as possible. It is also good to run the knife under the clam of the shell you plan to serve it on to loosen it up.

RECYCLE-A-CYCLE RECYCLE-A-CYCLE RECYCLE-A-CYCLE RECYCLE-A-CYCLE RECYCLE-A-CYCLE RECYCLE-A-CYCLE
By: Ed Barbieri
74 74
Remember that old dresser you found out on the curb when you were walking your dog? The one that you repainted and then lightly sanded the edges to give it that shabby-chic look that you love. How about that time you walked by the neighbors on the way to the beach and got your new patio furniture your family sits down to dinner at every night? A garbage corral on Long Beach Island is often a better honey-hole than any of the island’s treasured fishing spots. Unfortunately one man’s trash doesn’t always become another man’s treasure. With the temporary euphoria that many of the island’s visitors find on their vacation comes massive amounts of waste. Trash gets collected twice a week in many towns just to keep up with our ever increasing rubbish.
“The salt air takes its toll on everything at the beach and bicycles are no exception.” 75
With this summer looking to see a return of many long time visitors displaced by Hurricane Sandy, the opportunity exists more than ever to find a diamond hidden in the rough, and give trash a second chance. Recycle-A-Cycle is a small club started by several Surf City transplants: Matthew Holloway, International real estate broker; Ed Barbieri, Chiropractic student; Kyle Gronostajski, Alliance for a Living Ocean executive director; and Mike Gaudioso, lead project manager G-Force construction, amongst many others have been restoring bicycles they’ve found in someone’s trash for quite a few years now. “I grew up in Tennessee for most of my life. Tennessee is beautiful country so I started mountain biking as a way to see as much of it as I could,” says Holloway. “I worked in a bike shop as a way to pay for my first nice bike when I was 13 and learned how to work on $5000 race bikes. Fixing up somebody’s grandfather’s old bike doesn’t really need to be as precise.” For the past decade, the members of Recycle-ACycle, or RAC, have been piecing together parts found on the curb just as Dr. Frankenstein assembled his monster. In recent years, however, RAC has refined their craft, producing one of a kind works of rideable art each with a personality of their own. “We are able to find a lot of our materials in the trash ourselves, but honestly our friends find most of it for us,” explains Barbieri. “My mom goes on bike rides everyday and will tell me about any potential she saw along the way, and we have loc-doggie south end friends who constantly grab stuff for us.” The salt air takes its toll on everything at the beach and bicycles are no exception. “Sometimes it’s easy to change a couple of tubes and the bike is back to rolling,” Holloway says jestingly. “Most times the limitations of matters can’t be overcome though and the bike is too far gone. We might be able to get some parts off of it but it’s a lost cause.”
Kyle Gronostajski modeled the group’s mission in a reflection of the Alliance for a Living Ocean’s, to promote and maintain a healthy coastal environment. Reusing parts instead of buying new ones reduces the strain on the planet’s resources and keeps more waste from making it to the islands’s limited space for trash collection. Gronostajski goes on to say that, “the municipalities do a great job of keeping up with the increase in trash collection that they have to do in the summer. The professional scrappers do a great job of beating us to the bikes too. Recycling actually has a cost though. We reuse as much as we can and this way reduce the amount of waste and pollution affecting our habitat.” Recycle-A-Cycle operates on donations from their friends. “We’ve given a few bikes to our friends and they’ve donated for the parts we had to buy or for my garden,” says Holloway who also operates a small community garden in his yard from which he supplies his community with fresh organic produce free of charge. Each one of Recycle-A-Cycle’s bikes should be a reflection of it’s mounts personality. If you have any ideas about your own Frankenstein RAC or if you have a dust covered gem in your garage that you’re interested in donating don’t hesitate to contact RecycleACycleLBI@ gmail.com or check usbay out on instagram magazine @Recycle_A_Cycle. The Must See Bands Of The Summer
Let’s face it, summer’s the greatest time of the year for a variety of reasons - hot days, cold drinks, a good BBQ, and especially the bronzed skin and blissful vibes that come along with that overdose of Vitamin D. I mean seriously, what gets better than wearing minimal amounts of clothing while soaking up Mr. Golden Sun along the best beaches on the East Coast? I can only think of one thing: live music. Year after year the same bands travel across the bridge to LBI to play the tunes we love to jam and dance to with our friends and family. These guys live to entertain and we couldn’t love them more for it! Whether you’re just on the island for a weekend, renting for the week, or lucky enough to call this pretty place your home, you’ll definitely want to break out those boogie shoes and work on those dance moves for these must see bands of the summer.
bay magazine SUMMER 2014
77
The Benjamins You may have heard them opening up for bands like Third Eye Blind and the Goo Goo Dolls, but if you haven’t then this summer is your chance to. The Benjamins are originally from Bergen County, NJ but have been playing their entire career on LBI. Having grown up together and been friends their entire lives, they naturally mesh and sound incredible together.
G :What is your favorite genre of music? B: “We were mostly into classic rock at first, like Rush and Kiss, but we really love everything -pop, rock, country. There’s been a lot more country recently. The mainstream country fills the rock music void. It’s been a lot of fun picking up those songs.” G: What do you enjoy about performing on LBI? B:“Playing for the people. With every performance comes a new memory. Everyone’s on vacation so they have no reservations’. It’s a place that’s enjoyable, really a home away from home for us, like seeing a long-lost friend.” Don’t be fooled by their name – it will only cost you your voice for a couple days from singing along and possibly some sore legs from all the dancing you’ll inevitably be doing while rocking out with these guys.
G: Why is Reggae your favorite genre? ND: “We always thought Reggae was really cool, especially since we started up just a few years after Bob Marley’s death. He has always been a huge influence and inspiration. It’s really marketable as well, the beach and reggae fit really well together.” G: Why do you enjoy performing on LBI? ND: “This is where we get the biggest crowds. Long Beach Island is where people are continuously having fun and they really can appreciate the music. It’s always a success.” No Discipline isn’t just a cover band but also has 14 original recordings and a new album in the works, so keep an eye out for their 15th album soon to come!
78
Originally from Bergen County, NJ, brothers Mike and Al started No Discipline over 30 years ago. Through the years, friends of friends linked them up with their current band members, originally from Jamaica. They all share a common passion and appreciation for Reggae music bringing a unique and chill sound people love to kick back and unwind to.
No Discipline
The Blitz Band
G: Who is your biggest inspiration? TBB:“We definitely like all styles of music, but our biggest inspiration is our audience. We totally feed off each other. It’s a give and take, there’s absolutely no greater feeling than the energy of people clapping, singing, and dancing to our songs.
South Jersey born and raised, The Blitz has been playing on LBI for 12 consecutive summers and is accredited to packing in a younger and livelier crowd to the Surf City Hotel. Mutual friends bonded each musician traveling on different musical paths to form the band that everyone currently knows and loves. They add a totally unique twist to popular songs to make them their very own.
G: What do you enjoy most about performing on the island? TBB: “The loyalty of the fan base. It’s cool to see people count down on their Facebook to summer and when they could come to see us perform again… because we’re so busy with the normal running around routine during the winter, summers in LBI are the time we get to see those people we love year after year.” If you want to sing along to the good old, whole-hearted originals you love once you’re a couple brews deep, The Blitz is without a doubt the band to see. G: What is your most memorable experience performing on LBI? TN: “Bon Jovi showed up to one of our shows at Joe Pops - cowboy hat and all. He was sitting at the side bar when I approached him, but he didn’t want to talk about himself, he wanted to talk about our band. I asked him if he would play a song with us and he closed the night with us playing, ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’ then snuck out the back door. The place was absolutely jam packed. It was incredible.”
The Nerds
G: Why do you enjoy performing on LBI? TN: “There are a few reasons. LBI has always been a grassroots, grounded, ‘This is New Jersey’ type of place. It’s just honest. Also, the friends we’ve made on the island we’ll see years later. People have come up to us in Las Vegas and California saying they saw us in LBI. We run into LBI people all over the country, it’s known nationally.” Basically it really doesn’t matter whether you want to throw your hands up to the YMCA or jam to Pearl Jam beats then dive straight into Blurred Lines. They play it all fantastically and look ridiculously nerdy doing it.
79
Those retro framed glasses and a pair of suspenders just might come in handy for a night out with these guys. Residing in Hudson and Bergen County, The Nerds have been playing gigs nationally together for 29 years. Starting up in 1985 when the majority of bands were dressing like rock stars, they knew they needed to stick out somehow. They used their goofy personalities and decided to dress in a ridiculous way so the focus could be more on the integrity of the music, and less on just the “look” people were used to seeing.
PEOPLE ON LBI
The beauty of this island lies in the faces of our friends, family and loved ones. Here are a few of the faces of people who make this island so great!

By: Deborah Crowe,
Can you truly find a balance between work and personal life
Work. Life. Balance. What a nice ring to it. Sure we all want it. So how do we get it then? Further, when we do get it how can we possible sustain it? In the world of business, we are not busy, we are beyond busy. Mother Nature, catastrophic events and ongoing legislative changes have led the world to a new realm. Senior executives and entrepreneurs have unrelenting demands and pressures. Ironically, long periods of stress could and do result in short and long-term disability claims for many businesses in North America. So, let’s turn the table on the business management world. Is it not a risk to put this type of pressure on those who work within management or for that matter run the big corporations? It is not healthy on any level (physical/emotional/psychological/emotional) to live at this level of stress or let’s call it hypervigilance. After an average eight-hour workday (which is not average for most), how can you drop from the level of hypervigilance to live a ‘normal’ balanced lifestyle? It’s not impossible, but it comes from a place of pure 100% effort and making a choice. It doesn’t matter what type of business you are in. Behind the job description is a human attachment. If you add in the level of technology that our world now lives and breathes, it’s no wonder there are people struggling with work-life balance. Look at how we communicate now, Cell phones, emails, and text messages, Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and Skype. The list is endless, lengthy and growing rapidly on a daily basis - new innovation to communicate. Literally, no one has to pick the phone up and call someone; they can relay their message in a non-verbal fashion on a screen. In the United States alone, we send over 6 billion text messages daily, yes, daily. Isn’t that a scary thought? You have to take those transferrable skills of time and organizational management and put them into your daily life to balance out all elements in your life - family, career, health and friends. It is possible. Effort is the key here along with the ability to look at it as a simplistic task in your everyday challenge to balance yourself.
The definition of work-life balance is being able to separate work and personal life in order to handle stress, feel happier and get along better with everyone (colleagues and family/ friends). This is a daunting task if your cell phone is supplied by your employer and you use it for both work and personal. All of your emails for both aspects of your life coming on one device - is this positive or negative? Some may view this as extreme organization and handy, yet others may find it intrusive. When we look at where we have come from to where we are today it is no wonder we are struggling with Work-Life Balance. Changing technology and evolving demands of different generations put enormous pressure on how we achieve, maintain and sustain Work-Life Balance. If we are presented with a life-threatening scenario, our lives stop. We think of nothing else. A good example of this is a diagnosis of cancer. If you were given this terrible news but were told that the ‘magic’ pill was $100,000.00 and you were cured. Where would your mindset take you? The only thing on your mind would be to call the bank or family and do what you have to do. Buy that magic pill. Problem solved. Now, if it were only that easy. My point is that life would stop because of your mindset. You would do what you had to do - period. Why do people wait until they receive a diagnosis with a not so welcoming prognosis? What has happened to planning, organizing, thinking and being preventative - also known as Work-Life Balance? Consider the simplicity of taking the time to learn a new way to think before you can change your lifestyle. Work-life balance is not achieved overnight. Like business, a baseline must be established before you can observe and see the changes. So, don’t take the old adage been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Be pro-active and exercise the right to take control of your life on all accounts - personal and work. Deborah Crowe is a Work-Life-Balance Specialist.
