A True Masterpiece

There’s no question that, as people in general, we form an intimate relationship with the house in which we live. Some, however, are bonded on an extraordinarily deep level. Rick Cantor, along with his wife Joan, fall into the latter category.

Nestled on a quiet stretch of oceanfront in North Beach, their property is a magnum opus of sorts; a two-year labor of love that tells a rich story. The story of their family’s history, but also of a team of professionals, each masters in their particular craft, working diligently together to create an incredible home.

With three new builds and two full-home remodels previously completed, Rick entered the project with an unwavering grasp of how to accomplish his unique vision. Right from the start, he and Joan committed to building their home with all-natural, largely American-made materials, which sounds straightforward but is categorically a monumental feat, even astounding his contractors. This choice plays into the larger driving force for the project—attention to detail. Ancient Roman educator and rhetorician Quintilian’s philosophy “The perfection of art is to conceal art” is a motto Rick readily embraces to guide his work. In focusing on every single aspect of a home, from the overall aesthetic down to the minute selection of faucets and base trim (or lack thereof!), Rick acknowledges that a person’s subconscious takes in the entirety of a room, and he aims to generate a deep satisfaction through his careful curation.

Purchasing the house in the mid-90s, Rick and Joan formed many memories with their four children through the years. When SuperStorm Sandy struck, though, their home was unfortunately not immune from the damage inflicted to so much of our island. It ultimately became an opportunity to start fresh and build something perfectly suited to their growing family. And it is that very word upon which the structural and design choices were founded; family.

In order to accomplish their particular vision, Rick assembled a team of the best. Embracing the expertise of Jay Madden Architect, Rick, Jay and Alan Nachman carefully designed the home, combining Rick’s dreams with Jay’s nuanced industry knowledge and know-how of specific local zoning regulations. Rick then brought on Patrick Moeller of Callan & Moeller Construction, the leading custom home developer on Long Beach Island. Patrick was very hands-on throughout the entire construction process, upholding his commitment to unparalleled quality craftsmanship. Rick also joined forces with Jim McBrien, a superior finish carpenter capable of bringing every request to life. The whole team was united in their vision for the project. The running joke between Rick and his contractors was his obsessive, all-consuming nature through the build, but when viewing the end result, it’s no longer a joke—it produced a true masterpiece.

Upon driving down the quiet stoned lane, beautiful weathered-gray cedar shakes, a substantial brick chimney and lush hydrangea welcome you, reminiscent of

a quintessential Nantucket beach house, complete with the sand dunes and ocean in the backdrop. Carriage doors salvaged from the original home offer an unpretentious, yet elegant feel. Gorgeous mahogany deck boards, also from the original home, form a private walkway directly onto the beach.

Copper piping creates an internal gutter system so as not to take away from the home, and coated copper flashing adds beauty, low maintenance and a long service life to the exterior. The decking on all three levels is durable Ipe wood, an ultra smooth surface that stays cool even with the hot summer sun. American stainless steel and cedar railings, built by Jim McBrien, around the decks and up the outdoor stairways promote an unfettered view of the beach while graciously holding up to the harsh salt environment. Simple, integrated lighting softly illuminates the steps.

The ground floor deck is home to an exquisite dual outdoor shower. An ode to the iconic New York City rooftop water towers, the wooden structure was painstakingly crafted by Jim McBrien with literal cedar

puzzle pieces, creating a true work of art. A standing seam pre-coated copper rooftop, constructed on-site, completes the look, simultaneously providing a little extra insulation for a truly luxurious outdoor shower experience.

The interior of the home pivots a bit from the Nantucket look of the exterior and instead introduces a clean, streamlined design, focusing on straight lines and proportionality. An absence of crown moulding or baseboards (which, by the way, requires great skill to flawlessly achieve such a precise wall to floor finish) makes the space feel uninterrupted. Walls throughout the entire home are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Linen White, a timeless white, perfect for creating a warm, relaxed atmosphere that allows the star of the show to be the magnificent ocean views. Another feature meant to emphasize crisp lines and the seamless flow of the home is the omission of thresholds between rooms.

A host of other finish details carried throughout all three floors lend to a cohesive, upscale look. Wide-

plank, Vermont white oak flooring offers warmth and grounding in a way that does not detract from the light, spacious feel of the home. Minimalist low voltage Canadian recessed lighting is installed for when the sunlight begins to fade. Backlit vanity mirrors in each of the seven bathrooms and powder room provide the perfect amount of light while conjuring a unique ambiance. Newport Brass faucets in polished nickel in each bathroom and Rohl shower heads, also in polished nickel, were carefully selected to elevate every aspect of the bathroom into a spa-like atmosphere. Highly prized for its beauty, bluestone is peppered throughout the home in a variety of applications. The staircases are an artful marriage of stainless steel and glass, with solid white oak railings. Premium Emtek door hardware creates a very custom look and feels nice to the touch, complementing the 1 3/4” solid wood doors which serve to eliminate noise and withstand the ocean breeze. Beautiful art by famed artist, Bo Bartlett, an American contemporary realist who paints in both Maine and Georgia, imbues personality into every room.

The ground floor of the home is built around practicality. An attached garage houses the requisite beach umbrellas and chairs, plus two custom-built fishing rod storage units designed and built by Jim McBrien and mounted directly on the ceilings. Three tankless Rinai water heaters, plus special attention to the water and sewer lines, ensure a never-ending supply of hot water with phenomenal pressure. Four separate climate control zones make the house a space that can be easily utilized by multiple families. Huge wardrobes offer enviable storage for extra bedding and other beach house essentials, and mounts of antlers and fishing tackle shadow boxes inject character into an otherwise utilitarian space.

The ground floor living room continues this concept of personality meets functionality. A great play area for the grandchildren, the room holds comfortable seating and a wall-mounted television amidst plenty of open space in which tiny feet can easily run around. With a laundry room directly off of this room, sandy beach towels can be washed without tracking sand throughout the other living quarters. The main bedroom on this level is what dreams are made of; space for eight grandkids to sleep and store their treasures, thanks to custom bunks with under-bed storage drawers designed and built by Rich Woodward. Even on this lower floor there is plenty of natural light, enhanced in part to little picture windows that grace both the top and bottom beds. A large bathroom adjacent to the bunk room, boasting an extended double sink for all those little faces to line up while brushing their teeth, keeps child-mess confined to just one nook of the home. The bathroom also has a second entry door directly from the outside, a thoughtful feature meant to ease beach life. For whichever parent draws the short straw, the other ground floor bedroom, complete with ensuite bath, allows close supervision of the children when necessary.

For the parents lucky enough to sleep a bit further away, the second level of the home hosts four bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom and built-in closet. With insulation in every inch of wall, floor and ceiling throughout the house, noise doesn’t travel at all, ensuring sleepy parents enjoy a truly restful vacation. Every room of the house promises a view of the ocean, which made it easy for Rick and Joan’s adult children to stake a claim on a room of their own. One of everyone’s favorite features in the bedrooms are the automized window shades, adding a little bump of opulence to a bedtime routine. And with the shades drawn, transom windows can open for that enviable ocean breeze and the gentle sound of waves crashing. The best part of the second floor, though, is the living room, central to all four bedrooms. With black-framed glass walls, floor-to-ceiling artwork, a wood-burning fireplace, wall-mounted tv, wet bar, under-counter refrigerator, sofa and door onto the expansive deck, it welcomes the adult children as a place to convene at the end of each day, while keeping any late-night conversations confined with the glass door. A second laundry room is conveniently located off the main hall.

Truth be told, though, the top floor is, without a doubt, the hub of the home. Whether taking the glass elevator or the staircase, natural light streaming in from windows on each landing, the open living area simply beckons. A thrilling staircase chandelier adds excitement as one approaches the pinnacle of this North Beach home. Built at a custom-level, the height of the home offers a staggering view of the brilliant ocean, and vaulted ceilings heighten the sense of grandeur. Several glass coffee and end tables thoughtfully placed among Barcelona chairs and sofas pay homage to the serenity of line and the refinement of proportions that Rick and Joan sought for their interior. A second cozy, wood-burning fireplace below a wall-mounted tv anchors the area, flanked by signature Hugh Newell Jacobsen bookcases. Four glass dormers, tailor-made by a specialized company in Pennsylvania, are a show-stopping way to supply even more natural light. Beautiful both inside and out, the dormers also add a great deal of warmth during the winter. As every home build project is inherent with bumps in the road, these dormers were a point of contention at one point. During an on-site visit, Jay, Patrick, and Rick noticed that the fourth dormer, on the south side of the living room, was not perfectly centered within the room itself. The team immediately consulted and re-adjusted the entire roofline to make it more pleasing to the eye, a testament to their commitment to excellence.

An adjacent dining table offers seating for twelve people and the luxury, bespoke Smallbone kitchen by Hugh Owens showcases time-honored design and blends beautifully into the anatomy of the home. Expansive white cabinetry provides ample storage and blends seamlessly. Multiple drawers and even a roll out wine rack in the island give further definition to the concealed spaces. A Waterworks kitchen faucet lends an upscale, nautical vibe and a four-inch thick butcher block cutting board is fully integrated into the beautiful Italian stone on the sixteen-foot island. The steam oven, Joan’s favorite feature in the kitchen, plus a microwave are subtly built directly into the wall cabinetry so as not to detract. A Sub-Zero fridge along with two freezer drawers, plus a 65” six-burner double griddle Wolf range with pot filler and two full-size ovens enhance all of the family seafood bakes and holiday suppers. The wet bar tucked away to the side of the kitchen keeps all like things together while still offering a space of its own, with glass cabinet doors, two beverage drawers and an under-counter wine cooler.

Nestled on the north side of the main floor is the master suite. A full-length mirror graces the interior door in one of two built-in closets. The bed, situated perfectly to face the ocean and a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, invites you to linger for a beautiful sunrise each morning. The solid stone tub, hoisted in by a crane, also provides a prime vantage point. Knowing how much his wife likes to soak in the tub, Rick met with his team to ask them to notch out the corner wall to allow for a window, so Joan has a prime ocean view right from the tub. A fifth glass skylight promotes an opportunity to gaze at stars overhead, too. Kallisa faucets and marble tiles and vanity tops, along with a sleek walk-in shower, increase the high-end feel of the room. Also included in the master suite is a tidy office—with a view, of course!

And since life at the beach often beckons us outside, the top floor deck was built accordingly. On the south side lies a full outdoor kitchen; teak cabinetry, a bluestone counter top, sink, Wolf grill and under-counter fridge, all sheltered beneath a solid roof. A large table, again for twelve, situated perpendicular to the ocean, invites

dining alfresco. Another area hosts lounge chairs perfect for soaking in the warm summer sun. And a third space is carved out to host an over-sized umbrella and assortment of sofas, chairs, and end tables. Nautical wall-mounted lights add a soft glow for summer nights under the stars, while flood lights illuminate the dunes and even a peak of the ocean for a real night-time thrill.

For a moment of time alone, or to get a phenomenal view of the sunset, family members head to the roof top deck. Over the Fourth of July holiday, a party of family and friends took in six firework shows at once! The house is so loved by the family that Rick and Joan’s daughter held her wedding here in 2022. And the fact that it could accommodate 100 wedding guests is a true testament to both the functional layout and the quality of build.

Earlier last year Rick and Joan extended their family to include their team of contractors, to whom they are so grateful. They hosted a supper party for their construction team, including spouses, excited to have an opportunity to allow everyone who had a stake in the game a night to enjoy the exquisite end result of their hard work.

With so many unique features, one would think it would be hard to choose what it is about the home that stands out to Rick, but he is quick to answer. “The ocean. It’s always the ocean.” The feeling of relaxation and contentment begins to build as soon as he and Joan cross over The Bridge, heading to their beloved oasis. And he reaches full satisfaction upon settling into his third floor living room, opening the four sets of oversized French doors to allow the sound of the ocean waves to fill the walls; a home so meticulously built it manages to feel completely uncontrived—a true masterpiece.
