Person-To-Person Calls

This is the most expensive type of long-distance call. Call person-to-person when you wish to reach a particular person or extension number. Dial the number and, when the operator comes on the line, say you are making a person-to-person call and give the name of the person to whom you wish to speak. The operator will leave the line when the person you’re calling has answered the telephone.

Equal Access Dialing

Equal Access gives you the freedom to choose the company(ies) that meets your needs for 1 + calling inside and outside your LATA. After you choose a carrier(s), everything happens automatically when you dial a 1+number. The important thing is to consider the rates and benefits offered by carriers, then choose the company selection if you make your choice within six months after the service becomes available to you. You can also use other long-distance companies by dialing: seven-digit access code + 1 (or 0) + area code + phone number.

You will need to establish an account with each long-distance company you wish to use. Each company will provide you with their seven-digit access code.

LATAS Selecting A Local Toll and Long-Distance Company

As a consumer, you appreciate the right to choose the products and services that best fit your needs. Thanks to Equal Access, you can enjoy that same right when it comes to choosing which carrier(s) handles your local toll and long-distance calls.

Oregon is divided into geographic areas called LATAs (Local Access Transport Area). The long-distance (interLATA) Equal Access process allows you to choose a company to process 1 + calls outside your local calling area. These calls go beyond the LATA. The local toll (intraLATA) Equal Access process allows you to choose a service provider to process 1 + calls that are within your LATA and often within the state but outside your local calling area.

that’s right for you. Equal Access Dialing may be available in your area. With Equal Access Dialing, you choose one long-distance company through which you can make 1 + (or 0+) calls. To use Equal Access Dialing, you simply dial: 1 (or 0) + area code + phone number

Equal Access Dialing may not be immediately available to everyone. In addition, not all long-distance companies will choose to provide this service. If Equal Access Dialing is not available in your area, in order to use other long-distance companies, you may be required to dial an access code plus an authorization code in addition to the number you are calling. If you have contracted with a company to provide you with long-distance calling services, follow the dialing instructions they have provided to you.
