THE PROCESS OF SHOEMAKING So how were footwears made? Manuel shared how SOG corporation transforms raw materials to quality shoes OTTO brand were renowned for: 01 The desired shoe design were first sketched in the materials to create a shoe pattern. 02 Materials were then cut into pieces through the use of skiving machines. 03 After being cut, the materials were assembled and cleaned by a primer for better cementing operations. 04 Next, the shoes were cooled to let the glue dry. 05 Last, the shoes were sewn for stronger attachment of materials, producing a more durable and higher shoe quality.

hoes has always been an integral part of us. It speaks the language of our personality, our mood, our character, and our style. It’s a defining piece that expresses who we are or who we want to be. As for our own shoes, we want something that not just only create a style. Whether it’s boots, sandals, loafers, heels, or any any other kind of footwear, we definitely want a pair that would last. And when it comes to local production of fashionable and quality shoes, no place in the Philippines stands out more than the city of Marikina. When we speak of Marikina City, it’s not surprising when the first thing that comes to mind were shoes. Because of its robust shoe and leather industry by the turn of the 20th century, Marikina earned the title of Shoe Capital of the Philippines.

Today, SOG corporation is among the local manufacturers that continues to carry legacy of Philippine shoe making industry. Through the Otto shoes brand, Manuel Samson, founder of the SOG Corporation, shares the country his vision of providing quality footwear for all walks of life.

SOG Corporation and OTTO shoes For Manuel, owning a shoe manufacturing company was not his first ambition. In fact, his real dream was to become a pilot. But facing their impoverished circumstances in the past, Manuel knew that his parents couldn’t afford such costly studies. Understanding that the cost would be too expensive them, Manuel then decided to help his parents in the factory instead. In 1985, Manuel founded the SOG corporation as the manufacturing company

for OTTO shoes--a brand renowned for its durability and quality. Under his management, OTTO grew to a nationwide network of 63 stores that employ more than 500 individuals and subcontractors from a single store in Pasig with only five employees in 1979. But the shoemaking history of Manuel’s family dated back even before the Second World War. It was in 1967, when Manuel’s parents, Vicente Samson and his wife, Lucena Pascual-Samson, created the Stork brand shoes and built their own shoe empire. Years later, Stork brand changed and paved way to the creation of the OTTO brand. As part of their innovation, during 1980’s, OTTO introduced metal bulldogs and the carasole, or carabao hide footbeds in the country. They also as crafted the localized versions of Indian moccasins, penny loafers and wooden clogs. Today, OTTO maintains its tradition of excellent craftsmanship while pursuing new store concepts, new designs, and new products for the OTTO retail outlets and OTTO World of Shoes stores.

The Light At The Tunnel

In twenty, or even just one year from now (or one week or day at our current rate), we may look back at 2016 as one of the most consequential years in recent history, not only for the Philippines, but globally as well. When I say consequential, it can run in either direction—for the better or borderline catastrophe. The two consequential newsmakers and leaders that come to mind are President Duterte and President-Elect Donald Trump—two very polarizing figures with an unwavering agenda for change. President Duterte’s term will undoubtedly have enormous, longlasting effects on the Philippines. The war on drugs is not simply a matter of human rights, but also a matter of human and economic development for the nation. The cleansing of drugs in our country should result in a disciplined, progressive society similar to developed sovereignties such as Singapore and Japan. And I’m sure we can all agree that a crime and poverty free society (which are both connected to drugs) is something we must strive to achieve. There have been numerous occasions while driving throughout Metro-Manila where I’ve seen kids and adults aimlessly walking or begging for money while holding and sniffing an empty bottle of water—it makes your heart hurt—you wish, pray, and hope something can really be done once and for all to help our people. We now have such a leader, President Duterte who is sternly tackling this head on regardless

of consistent international and domestic criticism. Just recently in December, The New York Times place the Philippines’ drug war on their front page. Needless to say, this story was trending globally. Whether or not you believe that “the ends justify the means,” or simply “not like this,” the results and impact are profound and we aren’t left ambivalent. As of this issue, Donald Trump is still President-elect. Every single word, tweet, and action by Trump sparks a collection of human emotions ranging from outrage to optimism. That is why in this issue, we take an in-depth look at President Duterte’s infrastructure goals and what a Trump administration will mean for our country and the overseas Filipino community—two very critical topics that will shape our great nation beyond generations. Yet, if you’re at all anxious and stressed about 2017, don’t be. Be hopeful and con-

Early this November, the Presidential Communications Office has laid out President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration’s infrastructure programs. These projects mostly aim to provide Filipinos more jobs, to reduce merchandise prices by ease of transport, and also, to give solution to the Philippines’ problems of heavy traffic, particularly in Metro Manila. The Duterte administration has allocated about 5.4% of the 2017 government budget in infrastructures. Although it’s lower than the government’s initial statement of 7%, it’s still currently the largest infrastructure budget allocations compared to the previous administrations. These projects, under the coordination of The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), is planned to have its constructions finished in about 3-5 years. With the slogan, ‘Build Build Build,’ the Duterte administration plans to build more bridges and roads; build more railways, urban mass transports, airports and seaports; and build new and better cities.

Philippines, Filipinos, and Incoming Trump administration 2016 has been a year full of political shocks and surprises. For instance, the news of Brexit dropped like a bombshell, not only to the European community, but to other nations across the globe as well. Britain suddenly quitting the European Union has never been part of this year’s expectation checklist. Apart from Britain, Philippines also shocked the world as the country’s new leader, President Rodrigo Duterte, who won the recent May 2016 elections in a landslide victory, lambasted the United States and its present leader, President Barack Obama, due to the latter’s alleged unwelcome interference with the affairs of the Philippine government. This certainly drew a giant question mark over the decades-long friendship of the two countries. But more than that, it was beyond the imagination of Filipinos and Americans, much less of other nations, that President Duterte would attack the U.S. and its leaders with vulgar-laced speeches constantly to the point that it’s

somehow not surprising anymore. United States, on their part, also contributed to the 2016’s totally unexpected events list. Two months before the end of the year, U.S. also pitched the world a postscript upset: Donald Trump, nominee of the Republican party, won the 2016 U.S. presidential elections against the Democratic party’s nominee, Hillary Clinton. It is indeed normal that a country gets new officials after an election but Trump’s electoral pronouncements certainly warned the globe that there’ll be serious changes within America itself, and, to the worry of some nations, America’s relationship with other countries, taking note that the United States, as a superpower, has great global impact in different matters--particularly in areas of economics and military. With President-elect Trump’s “make America great again” campaign, the question mark on the relationship between the Philippines and the United States thickens. Will it be a mark of a fresh and friendlier start, or will it be a pure bad news?

Foreign Policies Trump wants to push for a stricter immigration policy. For Filipinos, perhaps one of the most startling among Trump’s electoral pronouncements was his immigration policy, considering that there’s a large number of Filipino immigrants in the United States-not to mention that it is common for most Filipinos to look at America as an ideal place to work or live. According to U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg last October, there are about 3.5 million FilipinoAmerican citizens the United States. The data from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs also revealed that there were about 3.18 million Filipinos residing the U.S. as of December 2015. Statistics show that about 10% of the Philippines’ gross domestic product (GDP) comes from the remittances of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Goldberg previously said that about 43% of these remittances comes from Filipinos who were in the United States. Trump, wanting to “bring back” the jobs to the Americans that were “stolen” by immigrants, has been firmed that his future administration’s priorities include the deportation or imprisonment of about 3 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. The Philippine government, on its part, however, downplayed it, declaring that it’s not a cause of big worry. Whether Trump would pursue a stricter immigration policy or not, the Philippines’ Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said it would only have “minimal effect” since most OFWs in the United States are legally employed. The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) also made a similar statement, saying that Trump’s immigration pronouncements do not have a ‘calamitous impact’ on the Filipino community in the United States. Latest record from the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) shows that only about 271,000 Filipinos were irregulars or undocumented as of December 2013. Still, DOLE urged undocumented Filipinos to return to the Philippines before Trump assumes office in January of next year. While currently most of Filipino immigrants were marked “safe” under Trump’s

immigration policy, it would be no doubt, more challenging, not only to Filipinos, but to other nationalities as well, who wanted to migrate in the U.S. Trade and Investment Policies Goldberg previously stated that the United States has been the largest private foreign investor in the Philippines, as well as largest private employer and largest exporter. With Trump’s centralized America investment policies, this could prove to have a great impact in the Philippines’ economy. Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) has been arguably one of the most high-paying jobs in Philippines, and its contribution to the economy has been nearly on par with the contributions of the OFWs over the recent years. But when Trump’s presidential victory was announced, several Filipino economic analysts pointed out that the BPO sector in the Philippines might be greatly affected, and it’s in a negative way.

According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, 70% of BPO revenues were sourced from the U.S. and BPO sector is possibly at a great risk because of Trump’s earlier pronouncements to restrict the America’s outsourcing of products and services to generate more jobs for Americans. In fact, there has been reports that some American accounts has pulled out from several customer service companies in the Philippines following Trump’s win. Despite that, Philippines’ National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Director General Ernesto Pernia argued that Trump won’t be able to directly order companies to pull out their business from other countries. Pernia said that most of the U.S. companies investing in the Philippines were run by private sectors, explaining that it’s the decision of the firms and not the government, where their investments would go. Meanwhile, when it comes to trade, Philippines might have to adjust its export

map if Trump would implement a stricter trading policies, which has also been part of his electoral pronouncements. Latest records from the Philippine Statistics Authority shows that the U.S. has been second among the top Philippine destination for exports, following Japan. 15.7% of Philippine exports goes to the United States while 21.1% goes to Japan. But amid possible financial concerns, the Philippines’ chief economist, however, recently said that President Duterte’s pivot to China acts as ‘safety net’ for the country’s economy. President Duterte previously announced his intent to severe ties with the U.S. and pursue an independent policy that is geared towards China and other countries in Asia, as well as Russia. Pernia said that Philippines’ diversifying of its friendship prevents the nation from ‘crashing’ when a foreign country being depended on is in ‘trouble.’ Last October, President Duterte an-

nounced upon his arrival from his state visit to China that he secured a $24 billion worth deal with Beijing that would generate 2 million jobs for Filipinos in the next five years. Philippine Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez also said that Russia committed to boost its imports from the Philippines to about $2.5 billion from its its current $46-million worth of purchases. Duterte and Trump For some analysts, Trump’s win may be ‘bad for the Philippines’ but considered ‘good for Duterte,’ pointing out the two leaders’ seemingly similar temperament. Over the past few months, the newlyelected Philippine president has been issuing controversial statements against the United States.

Duterte has previously cussed President Obama and the U.S. in some of his public speeches. He also expressed his intent before to scrap some joint military exercises with foreign countries, particularly with the United States. And perhaps, one of his most controversial announcements was when he said that he wanted the Philippines to ‘separate’ from the U.S. and pursue an independent policy. The crackdown on illegal drugs to prevent the Philippines from becoming a “narco-state” has been among Duterte’s main presidential campaign promise, earning him a landslide victory in the recent May 2016 elections. Police records show that around 4,000 people have been killed in the Philippines since Duterte took office on June 30 in relation to the government’s war on narcotics — 1,800 of which

were shot dead during legitimate police operations and about 2,600 by unknown suspects. The United States, on their part, has continuously urged the Philippine president to stop the killings, which possibly have triggered President Duterte’s series of anti-U.S. rhetorics. But when Trump’s victory was announced, Duterte’s tone toward the United States seemed to sound more friendlier. Although Duterte said he would maintain Philippines’ shift to other Asian countries, he remarked that he is looking forward to work with the incoming Trump administration for ‘enhanced PhilippinesU.S. relations’ that would be anchored on ‘mutual respect, mutual benefit and shared commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law.’ Relating what happened during the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru, Philippines’ Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. also said that President Obama told him that he is expecting a better and stronger relationship between the Philippines and the United States under the new administration of President-elect Trump. With Trump, who doesn’t seemed to show as much concern as other world leaders to the local concerns of other countries compared to its predecessors, such as Duterte’s war on drugs, a reboot possibility for fresher relationship between the Philippines and the United States has been hoped. And speaking of Trump’s likeliness to be focused more in America and deal less with other countries, territorial disputes in Asia-Pacific would no doubt be also put in a great uncertainty. History teaches us that not all electoral promises were kept by victorious politicians. But at the same time, history teaches us too that tides can change, and even a single event can upset the normal path of currents. As of now, how would Trump’s administration really affect the Philippines remains unclear. But without doubt, whether we like it or not, directly or indirectly, it will affect the Philippines and the globe in different aspects--some, just how most analysts predicted it through his pronouncements and personality, while some, perhaps, in other unexpected circumstances.

Based on 2016’s Travel and Tourism statistics, what were the challenges we need to improve on? And how? The largest concern is to accelerate the transport infrastructure program particularly in improving and expanding our international airports by enhancing capacities, modernizing travel facilities in the terminals and streamlining airport operations. These developments will greatly facilitate the growth of tourism both from foreign visitors as well as domestic travel. Said major projects consists of the construction of a new terminal at the Clark Int’l airport to service Central Luzon and Metro-Manila, the current expansion program fo Cebu-Mactan Int’l Airport which will enable it to process 15 million passengers annually, the ongoing enhancement of Kalibo Intl Airport and the expansion of the Caticlan Airport to enable it to handle international flights for Boracay, the improvements being introduced to convert the Puerto Princesa Airport to an international gateway, among others. All these plus the operationalization of the new airports in Daraga, Albay and Panglao, Bohol by 2020 augurs well in terms of not only growth in tourist volume but in spreading the economic benefits across the archipelago. While the infra projects are ongoing, DoT, TPB and the private sector will have to start building demand to the destinations being serviced by the planned international gateways, that is by introducing tour

programs in said areas, promoting them and of course encouraging air carriers to fly directly to these destinations, initially by developing charter flights. In the maritime side, the improvements of identified seaports in support of our cruise industry, likewise is a priority infrastructure program. Northern Luzon, particularly the ports of Curimao and Salomague in the Ilocos provinces as well as Subic have been identified by international cruise lines as important ports of call that can be developed. Central Visayas potential for cruise operations are hedged on port improvements in Puerto Princesa, Coron for Palawan, Mactan for Cebu Cagban and Caticlan for Boracay.

What are 2016 most successful projects/events and what have we learned from them? Asean Tourism Forum, Philippine Travel Exchange, Madrid Fusion Manila, Travel Blog Exchange Asia Pacific 2016 (TBEX) and World Street Food are considered successful events we handled. We are also supporting Travel Tour Expo, Philippine Travel Mart and National Association of Independent Travel Association (NITAS) events.

What’s TPB’s vision/goals for 2017? Tourism Act of 2009 spelling out the reorganization of TPB and its mandate. On the short term, the immediate goal will be to strengthen the partnership with the private sector particularly in the promotional effort; this will include both international markets and domestic tourism. TPB plans to rollout the road map for the development of the MICE sector with special focus on Asia Pacific regional events but with North America also for attendance promotions. It shall lend support to efforts being undertaken to expand long stay, retirement and medical tourism as well.

What regions, or specific places, TPB wants to highlight for 2017? In terms of destination development and marketing, we will be guided by the improvement of air and sea accessibility and therefore TPB will push sites and destinations that will be serviced by the new gateways anchored on soft and hard adventure activities and history and culture programs. We are not forgetting the capital city as Manila will spearhead the MICE promotions campaign complemented by Entertainment City as a lifestyle destination.

How aggressive is TPB in its role to promote the country? What’s their target tourist count for 2017 or in the next five years? TPB and its private sector members will be adopting a very pro-active role in country promotions across the broad spectrum of tourism products. We mentioned nature and culture: diving, trekking, surfing, country and mountain biking among others. Farm tourism right now is being developed while our partnership with DENR, NHI, NCCA, through DOT will open up opportunities to visit such heritage sites and nature parks like Mt. Hamaguitan in Surigao and the Tamaraw Reserve in Mindoro. We will continue to push programs in our top 10 markets but be more aggressive in Mainland China, India, the Middle East and of course in our ASEAN neighbors particularly Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. Partnering with air carriers will a a crucial strategy to be pursued.

In terms of social media marketing, how are we promoting the country in terms of trends? Most countries use ambassadors like Hollywood stars and Icons, have we done something similar? We await directions from the DOT as to how to proceed with the umbrella campaign and the current branding efforts. The latest marker researches commissioned by DOT underscore the expanding reach of web-based technology which means we should strive for a larger presence in travel web sites, booking engines, blogs and other social media platforms... and not only those in English! Said researches also score the importance of Word of Mouth and so we intend to support the efforts of spreading the “culture of tourism” as part of reaching out to host communities.

Is TPB working with other government agencies to address the issue of transportation (land, sea, air, etc.) to improve tourist travel? How does it see the bigger picture in terms of modern traveling? Where does it want to position the country in the global list of travel spots? We will work closely with the DOT and its other attached agencies : TIEZA for example, in terms of investment promotions for their flagship Tourism Enterprise Zones; we support the convergence and joint programs with DOTr for more air routes, DENR for ecotourism, DOH for medical tourism, etc.

Palawan was recently hailed as the best beach in the world by Conde Nast Traveler magazine. How will it affect the tourism in the province and how will TPB use this privilege to sustain the recognition as well as promote other areas? Palawan is a special case considering the ongoing expansion program of the Puerto Princesa Int’l Airport, we foresee very positive results in introducing its destinations to the traveling public. More focus has to be given to “ground facilities and services” such as more quality and standardized accommodation units, land traffic management, better quality coasters and vans and international standards services from housekeeping to eco tour guides. Essentially it means working with the LGUs and the community stakeholders to make sure development is sustainable and that the destination delivers a pleasant and memorable experience.

Please provide a quote from Officer-in-Charge Joji Gregorio sharing TPB’s vision in promoting the Philippines (and how it differs from other top destinations in the world) as well as inviting tourists to visit the country. While volume of arrivals and domestic travellers seem to be the traditional gauge of how successful a tourism industry is, let us not forget that economic benefits must be spread to the local people, that we deliver a safe and pleasant experience to our visitors and at the same time respect and enhance our natural and social environment.

The Philippine Golf Tourism Council In the early days of golf, players carved their own clubs and balls from wood. In the 16th century, a set of clubs consisted of longnoses for driving, fairway clubs for medium range shots, spoons for short range shots, niblicks (similar to today’s wedges) and a putting cleek. Steel replaced hickory shafts in the 1920s. By the 1980s, hi-tech materials such as graphite and titanium, which are extremely strong but very light, were commonplace among professionals. Golf is thought to have been introduced to Manila in 1886, by British people working for the Manila Railway Company. The Brits built a 3-hole course in paddy fields south of Intramuros, and by 1901 there was a 9-hole golf course next to the railway station. In 1992, during the term of President Fidel Ramos, there was a boom in the construction of golf courses nationwide and the DOT through the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA). Each administration started the Tourism Cup which promoted golf tourism. This saw the beginnings of the arrival of Korean and Japanese golfers. #BrighterTomorrow Martin Paz, Resorts World Manila’s Chief Integrated Marketing Officer, said that the #BrighterTomorrow campaign was developed as a solution to a specific problem: that of generating awareness for RWM’s newest musical production, Annie, in the midst of the loud political noise in the aftermath of the highly-divisive Philippine national election. “In order to gain their share of attention for Annie, we needed to come up with something that is not only creative, but also Authentic, Relevant and Timely,” Paz said. The campaign builds upon a clear and specific insight: one thing that unites Filipinos is their innate love for music. Thus, the campaign is centered on a music video, produced completely in-house, featuring the kids from the cast of the musical singing the iconic song “Tomorrow.” Using the hashtag #BrighterTomorrow as handle, the video opened with a quote from the song: “We’re only a day away,” and closed with a message: “Wishing our country a brighter tomorrow,” thus turning it into a message of hope that transcends political barriers—the authenticity of which they strengthened by purposely avoiding putting their brand on it.

The video was posted on Facebook on June 29, one day before the inauguration of the country’s new President, Rodrigo Duterte, giving deeper meaning to the song’s lyrics. Within the first 24 hours, the video reached over 10 million users, garnered over 1 million views, over 28,000 reactions and comments, and over 7,000 shares. To date, it has over 2.3 million views, over 13 million total reach, over 67,000 reactions and comments, and over 14,000 shares. It also translated to a significant increase in traffic to the Annie webpage and helped turn the musical into Resorts World Manila’s most profitable production in its seven-year history. Challenges and Hardships The #BrighterTomorrow campaign was one of only three entries shortlisted in the social media strategy category from hundreds of campaigns submitted for consideration to the Asia-Pacific Communications Awards.

Only its on second year, the Asia-Pacific Communications Awards (APCA) elevates business communications in the region though an innovative program that recognizes the most exceptional communications, PR and public affairs campaigns in the Asia Pacific. The awards are a project of the Asia-Pacific Association of Communications Directors, an organization that provides a platform for networking and exchange of knowledge among in-house communications professionals regarding advances in the profession. Just how innovative is APCA? Unlike other awards in business communications, this one required finalists to defend their work in a live presentation before a panel of jurors. Paz, an advertising industry veteran with __ years of experience in the Philippines and abroad, said that this is the first time he had to defend a campaign for an award. The Resorts World Manila team flew to Singapore with little knowledge of what to expect.

“We had only 10 minutes to present the campaign, followed by a question and answer segment. Despite being intimately familiar with every detail of the campaign, it was still a nerve-wracking process for us, especially knowing that we were up against two other organizations with excellent social media campaigns of their own, shortlisted from many other campaigns entered from different countries,”Paz said.

All of the traditions are meant to invite good luck and prosperity. Here are your top 10 Filipino Superstitions to look out and follow for this New Year’s Eve with your loved ones. 1. At exactly midnight, Filipinos believe that jumping would make them taller in the incoming year. This is practiced by children rather than adults. Some Filipinos are even specific about the number of jumps: 12 jumps to be exact. 2. Filipinos also believe that by making a lot of noise as soon as the clock strikes midnight, evil spirits are driven away, giving them a peaceful start in the year. We usually buy “torotot“, a small horn made of plastic and bamboo. Teens enjoy making noise with firecrackers, while other families keep safe by using pots and pans to make noise. 3. Pancit is a dish often served in different occasions like birthdays and fiestas. On New Year’s eve, Filipinos believe that by eating this particular dish, you will have a longer, healthier life. The dish is made from very long noodles, which gives the meaning of the longevity of their lives.
