The 50th Issue A few weeks ago, I asked my son if he would join one of my meetings. Initially, he didn’t ask me what company, who the meeting was with, or what the meeting was about. Rather, he asked me where the meeting was and at what time. In turn, I asked him why? He told me that he has many things to do and can’t waste any time because in the Philippines, where and what time the meeting is matters because not only is there car traffic, but you also have to consider the people traffic as well—especially if you need to use the elevator. He told me that for many of the commercial buildings, there are typically long lines to ride the elevator and also lines to check-in at reception or security. And if your meeting is right before or after the lunch hour, waiting to use the elevator can be in his terms, “excruciatingly long and a waste of time.” An economist once told me that on average, Filipinos living in Metro-Manila will have spent a combined total of 3 years of their life stuck in traffic and that the Philippines loses over PHP 2 Billion in GDP each day because of it. Because of these conversations, I began thinking about the concept of time and how we spend it. All of us, I’m sure, are familiar with the stereotype about Filipinos—that we have a tendency to not be on time and run late, hence the moniker—filipino time. But this is not just our culture—it is everyone—everyone runs late. Life is unpredictable and things beyond our control do happen. Whether we are rushing to work, set our alarms to wake up, go to sleep at a certain hour, or start noticing wrinkles or a little less hair on our heads—we are all controlled by time in one way or another. We can’t stop time from ticking, the only thing we can do is decide how we spend it. Some of us are fortunate to be able to spend money, however, those same people are often times the ones who can’t spend time because they have to work—is this how life should be spent? Spending more time at work than with our loved ones? Possibly for some of you, living in a country where

you wish you didn’t have to live—an ocean apart, separated from your family and friends—is that how we should spend our time? Do some of you spend more time with your colleagues than with your own family? Do your children spend more time with their teachers than with you? Yet, what choice do we have? Especially if there are no opportunities available otherwise—we have to earn a living and things are never simple. Among the hundreds of brilliant things said by Steve Jobs, two favorite quotes come to mind about life and time. “We don’t get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? And we’ve all chosen to do this with our lives. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it.” My other favorite quote is, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? And whenever the answer has been no for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” In Tagalog, us Filipinos have a saying about describing a difficult life, ganyan talaga ang buhay—that’s life. To me, this tagline is profound, but unacceptable.

And I hope you feel the same way too. That is why we are constantly encouraging you to come home, shop, travel, and invest in our homeland—create jobs and opportunities for our countrymen and women because the country needs it. When we first launched Balikbayan Magazine back in 2009, it was about rejuvenating and reconnecting balikbayans with the love for the Philippines. 49 issues later, the words “Love of Country” remain at the very essence of all our publications—and over time, that is one absolute that will never change. With each issue, we’ve witnessed and recorded how the country has rapidly progressed over these years. It takes time and we’ll surely get there. But let’s all just take a moment to stop, live, and enjoy. Instead of always being in a hurry to accomplish or finish something, enjoy the process, stay in the moment, and spend time—even if we have many things to do.

t all started when he submitted “Into the Green Zone” -- a breathtaking shot of a rainbow on the horizon of the clear blue sea -- to National Geographic and won. After this life-changing event, Tapan has continued to amaze others with his photos, making him the legend that every photographer aspires to be. Years later, his eye for photography still inspires many to consider a career in photography. Balikbayan Magazine had the opportunity to sit down with him and delve into the depth of his passion. Q: What inspired you to pursue your career in travel photography? A: To help the country, because the Philippines is a very nice country. We need to show the world through visuals that the Philippines is more than meets the eye. Q: How do you get the subject that is in front of the camera onto the film, chip, or paper in just the way you want? A: All the pictures that I wanted to take, I’ve studied first. Whether it be through books or publications. I’m thinking of the future! Not only the present, because all pictures are part of history. Photos aren’t just for Facebook, that’s why my concept portrays beautiful and timeless shots -- not the postcard type. Q: What tips can you give to upcoming or young travel photographers who want to improve in travel photography? A: You must love your career or you must not think only about yourself but for your fellow countrymen. Cameras are only tools, you can take good pictures using good cameras but the important thing in photography is your concept -- your idea. Just because you have a good camera doesn’t mean you’ll take good photos. You need to put your soul into the shots that you take. Q: Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your mindset towards your career in photography? A: My father is a photographer who lived in a small town. In our Quezon province, we would accept gigs for different functions like baptisms, graduations -- just to sustain our family. Though, those gigs didn’t hinder me from growing as a photographer.

I would browse through National Geographic, Life Magazine and other famous publications in America to inspire myself. The character of the Filipino is to study first. You cannot become an outstanding photographer overnight by just taking pictures. Q: Where were you able to find the national geographic magazine that changed your life? Was it given to you by your father or did you find it at a store? A: I love going to bookstores, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how I found National Geographic. National Geographic had very nice photos. I loved looking at photos of people, places, culture, and just about everything! I love the things that inspire me. I also enjoyed looking through Life Magazine at the time. In Life Magazine, there were a lot of photo essays -- telling your story through pictures. My dream was to become a photographer for those kinds of photos. Q: What message do you want your photographs to convey? And how do you get your photos to do that?

A: I want the people who view my photos to feel something. I want people to feel the soul of each picture and be moved. A photo that will keep people thinking [about] how I was able to capture the subject without depending on the quality and price of a camera. Q: How did you get from being an aspiring photographer to making it a full-time job for a living? A: If you get on the right track of photography in the Philippines like me, you will be able to earn more than a CEO of an important company. For example, I was able to buy a house for capturing just one photo and this is one of the main reasons why photography is important. It is a full-time job for me. Q: What technology/software/camera gear do you use to keep focused on what you do best? A: Technology is in the camera. I’m not a man of technology. But I mainly use Nikon D800 and Fujifilm XPro for digital. I also have Leica and Hasselblad film cameras.

Often, most tourists go up North to personally witness the remnants of the past by walking along the picturesque caasas in Calle Crisologo, Vigan. However, some of us are not fated to endure 7 to 9 long-sitting journey hours nor to afford costly budget allocation, thus we just end up daydreaming. But wake up and pack now, because Batangas hides the commonly overshadowed yet vying heritage town of Taal – just 2 hours away from Manila. Taal in Batangas is home to Asia’s biggest church, the Basilica of St. Martin de Tours. Its gigantic size definitely attracts the tourists to go there. There also reside a number of old houses, nostalgic museums, eateries and other amazing architectures that have been part of the history. Its well-preserved structures clearly depict the influence of our Spanish conquerors. Thus, the town of Taal was once labeled as the Vigan of the South. The Basilica of St. Martin de Tours is obviously well-preserved. The texture of the façade is rough – a proof

Spotify vs. Apple Music: A Showdown for the Best Streaming Service WRITER

POTIFY, the indisputable champion of streaming music just might have found their competitive match. Spotify with nearly 30 million subscribers and 100 million users – both paid and free ad-based – has been dominating the music streaming industry. With its rapid growth in 2016, Spotify is definitely going to be hard to beat. APPLE MUSIC, the new kid on the block, has already surpassed other music streaming services such as Rhapsody, Deezer, Tidal, and Google Play Music. With an impressive 13 million paying subscribers in just over a year, Apple Music is already nipping at the heels of its biggest competitor, Spotify. Released in 2014 as Beats Music and then re-launched in 2015 as Apple Music, this will be a stream war that will keep Spotify on their toes.

On a budget? No problem! Spotify also offers a free ad-based subscription, but of course this subscription comes with limitations.

Apple Music, on the other hand, offers a free subscription for the first three months and $2.99 on the fourth month onwards. They offer the same to the Philippines with a price of ₱138.39 after the free three-month trial. Apple Music also offers family packages of $4.99 a month for 6 members which is ₱230.96 a month in the Philippines. Spotify, however, does one up Apple Music with their free ad-based subscriptions that anyone can access with limitations such as not being able to skip music and listening to various Ads.

SPOTIFY: 30 million+ Spotify adds over 20,000 new songs each day, and there’s more tracks in Spotify than your ears can ever imagine. Their offers are about as comprehensive as it gets. Furthermore, Spotify brings all the latest record releases, exclusive live sessions, and various new singles right to its New Releases tab each Tuesday. This supplies users with an advantage to hear the latest from established stars like Beyonce, as well as the chance to discover new and emerging artists all from different music categories. APPLE MUSIC: 30 million+ Apple has taken steps to secure more exclusives than the competition. For example, Taylor Swift’s latest album, noticeably absent from Spotify, is available on Apple Music. There’s another area where Apple Music has the leg up on its competition: integration of the iTunes library. Any music you’ve got, whether its songs previously purchased via the iTunes Store, ripped from a physical CD, or uploaded to iTunes Match it will appear in Apple Music’s library. For this round, it’s a tie!

SPOTIFY With both the web player and mobile app, Spotify is very easy to navigate. With it’s simple design, even those who aren’t tech savvy will be able to pick up the navigation in a snap.

SPOTIFY Spotify becomes even more entertaining because of it’s cool features wherein it recommends different music based on the songs you listen to. They also make it easier for users to find new music with the “Discover Weekly” option which is updated every Monday of the week. This is where you may find all types of music you’ve never heard and might just get addicted to. They also relate to their users by giving them pre-made playlists based on genres and moods making it even easier for users to find the type of music they want for any occasion. In addition to that, Spotify also allows their subscribers to share, follow and create their own playlists to optimize their musical experience. APPLE MUSIC Apple Music has a similar feature wherein they make you select different artists and genres to get a better sense of your music preference. After this process, they curate playlists based on the answers given. A “team of experts” as Apple calls it are the curators of these playlists to help better the experience and accuracy of your preferred music. They also offer curated playlists by DJ’s, and while Spotify also offers “Expertly curated playlists”, Apple still comes ahead in this category. Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio – which is a radio station broadcasting the best new mixes and music live by different DJ’s - also plays a major role when it comes to music discovery. Oops they did it again, this round goes to Spotify!

ROUND 4: SOCIAL FEATURES

SPOTIFY Spotify’s social functions gives subscribers the advantage to follow friends, see what they listen to, who they follow, and gives users the ability to share or recommend playlists. Additional Features include offers to subscribers which gives the ability to share their listening history to Facebook, then gives their Facebook friends an opportunity to Like or Comment on the activity. While these features do give Spotify some social clout, we’d like to see the service go further with more intuitive ways to follow friends and artists, as well as adding an easy way to chat with who you follow. Spotify’s social core is solid, but adding a stronger focus towards connecting people to their friends, and who they listen to, would go a long way in keeping people more engaged in the site. APPLE MUSIC Apple Music doesn’t offer much in the way of social components aside from the Connect function. From candid backstage photos, to early cuts of an upcoming music video, artists have the ability to share with their fans a host of exclusive insight and information. Apple also allows users the ability to Comment, Like, or share any artist’s messages, with the artist having the opportunity to respond back.

Sorry Apple, but this round goes to Spotify! Come on, you hardly have to put any effort into finding new music ‘cause Spotify does everything for you.

APPLE MUSIC Apple Music on the other hand, gives pleasing visuals but it is quite complicated to navigate. Users will go through trial and errors before they get the hang of it. And for the final round, it again goes to Spotify! With it’s ease of access and simplicity, there’s no doubt about it!

In conclusion, given how established Spotify has become in the past few years, it will take a lot for hardcore fans to try out Apple Music, especially given that year’s worth of playlists cannot be transferred. If you’re unbothered about radio also, it’s unlikely that Apple Music’s free trial will sway you to use the service as your primary means of streaming, and if you enjoy being able to see what your friends are listening to via Facebook that’s another feature lacking. Spotify also has more extensive charts, drawn from what its users are streaming worldwide.
