“Not for ourselves alone are we born.”

n 2013, the country was devastated when one of the strongest typhoons in history hit us. While Tacloban and Leyte got the worst of it, most of the beautiful small islands of Coron were also left in shambles. Such dismay called forth the help of not only Filipinos but people from all over the world as well. This set in motion a plan that will help rebuild the lives of our kababayans displaced in the island barangay of Lajala, Coron, Palawan. With thriving hearts, the Andres P. Tamayo Sr. Foundation, Inc. joined hands with sister companies DataLand, Inc. and DDT Konstract, Inc. to embark on a journey of rebuilding Lajala from the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda through Project: Help Lajala, Coron. Such a feat required coordination with the local government in identifying first the immediate needs of Lajala which are: housing, reconstruction of pier and church. With these, Mayor Fem Reyes of Coron, Palawan requested the design and construction of houses using indigenous materials that are readily available and can easily be copied by the locals. After thorough research, design and prototyping gave birth to the “earth-bag house” as the finished product adopted for mass production in the area.

The earth-bag house is a cost-effective, environment-safe, decent and comfortable abode. To date, the mass production of the first 25 units in the area are in varying degrees of completion. The initial commitment is to deliver 100 housing units complete with solar-power for electrical home requirements. The priority is to relocate indigenous people (locally called IPs) living along the coastline. In addition to the housing project, the group identified other basic needs of the community in order to uplift their living conditions. These are: a. Construction of a new pier to replace the old-dilapidated one. To date, this has been completed as this serves as the island’s gateway.

c. Construction of a water system to address the absence of potable water source. The 180-ft. deep well has already been dug. d. Construction of a Tourism Center in Barangay Lajala to provide a venue to entertain and enhance visitors’ arrival. Other projects lined-up include the grading of the road with zocalo-lined canals in order to provide better accessibility and mobility within the community. More importantly, all these infrastructure projects provide the locals economic relief in terms of earnings as they were all tapped by the group to provide the labor component while being remunerated using the DOLE-mandatory wages in the given area.

b. Construction of a church to replace the damaged chapel. Currently, the construction of the church is ongoing which will address the spiritual needs of the locals.

On the softer side, for sustainability, the Andres P. Tamayo Sr. Foundation, Inc. led by Miss Elbi Cuneta plans to implement community nurturing programs involving livelihood, health and sanitation, education, skills and leadership trainings, among others. This is a continuing commitment.

The Philippines is recognized as having the world’s longest Christmas season. Ask any local when the Christmas season begins and they will cheerfully tell you it is on the first day of the first “-ber” month—September 1 and concludes on either the Feast of the Black Nazarene on January 9, or on the third Sunday of January on the Feast of the Santo Ninos de Cebu. This festive season is locally known as Pasko sa Pilipinas. From Christmas music on the radio, to decorative storefronts, to the interior design of hotels, restaurants, and shops, Christmas comes early—showcasing an unrivaled fondness for getting into the holiday spirit months ahead. Perhaps this quality is at the heart of the character of Filipinos—that we are a nation comprised of people who have this innate spirit for Christmas—this attitude of generosity, of community, and amicability—and you can feel this year round. Many foreigners describe the country as “the smile capital of the world,” a country that gives the gift of smiles regardless of the circumstance. This year, I have noticed and felt an even bigger sense of elation for the Christmas season. And this could largely be in part to the highly anticipated Papal visit to the Philippines from January 15 to 19, 2015. I remember the excitement I felt back in 1987 when Pope John Paul II visited Los Angeles, California for

two days. Millions of visitors swarmed the streets to catch a glimpse of His Holiness. The streets were aligned with tight security and you could hear the loud sound of helicopters flying around covering the spectacle on the television. Undoubtedly, for the Philippines, a nation that is predominantly Catholic, this event will invoke the myriad of emotions that are anachronistic to those felt on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning— you will always remember three things: where you were during big world events, the birth of your children, and of course all of those family Christmases. In the States, Christmas is very different. An unwritten rule exists that “You can’t listen to Christmas music or assemble your Christmas tree until after Thanksgiving.” I never really understood why—personally I can listen to the Lettermen or Frank Sinatra’s Christmas Albums regardless of the season. And nothing elates the heart more than coming home and enjoying the fresh scent of the tree and seeing the shimmering decorations of the Christmas tree. Yes, the Christmas sentiments are the same in the States as that of the Philippines, but the differences of experiencing the holidays in the Philippines are simply one of those “you need to be here” notions in order to fully understand and appreciate it. For some, it doesn’t feel like Christmas unless it is cold, for others, it is not Christmas

unless there is a tree. For me, it is not Christmas without hanging up the parol, the 5-pointed star shaped lantern, the symbolic emblem of Filipino hope and goodwill that signifies the victory of light over darkness during this special season. It has been many years since I have spent Christmas and New Years in the Philippines and perhaps many years for you as well. And although I can always revert back to all those fond childhood memories of Simbang Gabi (Midnight Mass) and Noche Buena, the traditional feast after midnight mass, with my own parents, I feel that the time has come (and long overdue) for me to plan a family Christmas vacation in the Philippines with my kids. These Filipino Christmas traditions must be passed down to the next generation, and I hope you will do the same. Give the gift of the Philippines this year and everyday, whether it is a fond memory, pasalubong, or travel. From Tagaytay, to Puerto Galera, to Cebu, to simply anywhere in the Philippines, any destination you choose would surely be an unforgettable Christmas and New Years. ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY 2015 !"#$%&'!"#$%&'(("&)*

Less than a month from now, we will be welcoming the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) economic integration. Part of this integration is the materialization of the ASEAN economic community (AEC) in 2015. But what really is AEC that makes it something to look forward to? OVERVIEW

The AEC is the realization of the end goal of economic integration as advocated in the ASEAN Vision 2020.

The ASEAN Vision 2020 was earlier adopted during the Summit in Kuala Lumpur in December 1997, wherein the ASEAN leaders decided to transform ASEAN into a stable, prosperous, and highly competitive region with equitable economic development, and reduced poverty and socio-economic disparities.

During the Bali Summit in October 2003, the ASEAN leaders declared AEC shall be the goal of the regional economic integration. Besides the AEC, there are two additional integral pillars of the envisioned ASEAN Community – ASEAN Security Community and ASEAN SocioCultural Community. These three pillars are expected to work concurrently in establishing the ASEAN Community 2020.

The ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) agreed in a meeting to develop “a single and coherent blueprint for advancing the AEC by identifying the characteristics and elements of the AEC by 2015.”

At the ASEAN Summit in January 2007 held in Cebu, Philippines, the Leaders affirmed their strong commitment to accelerate the establishment of an ASEAN Community by fast tracking the regional integration in 2015

The AEC will transform the region into a ‘single market and production base’ with free flow of goods, services, investment, capital and skilled labor in the region. It will also accelerate regional integration in the priority sectors: electronics, e-ASEAN, healthcare, wood-based products, automotive, rubberbased products, fisheries, air travel and tourism. These sectors were chosen based on the comparative advantage in natural resource endowments, labor skills and cost competitiveness, and value-added contribution to ASEAN community.

Each of the priority sectors encompasses a roadmap which aims to strengthen the competitiveness of ASEAN; strengthen regional integration efforts through liberalization, facilitation and promotion measures; and promote private sector participation. According to the roadmaps, import duties for products under the priority sectors will be fully eliminated. In January 1, 2010, the ASEAN-6 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) started to import and export almost all goods across their borders at no tariff under the Common Effective Preferential Tariffs for ASEAN Free Trade Area (CEPT-AFTA). The AFTA served as a catalyst for the development of the single market and production base projected by the AEC Blueprint. Aside from tariff elimination, the roadmaps will also focus on trade and investment facilitation measures. Part of these measures is the ASEAN Single Window which includes electronic processing of trade documents at national and regional levels. ASEAN nationals traveling within the region will be exempted from acquiring working permit. Movement of business people, experts, professionals and talents will be facilitated faster. As one ASEAN member states, Philippines should be ready to implement these measures in 2015. But are we ready. According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Philippines is “primed and ready” for the AEC. This complements the perspective of economist Dr. Cielito Habito, USAID Head of Trade-related Assistance and Development, who believed that the country is in a better position to embrace this opportunity. “We talk as if the ASEAN economic integration is a day where the world will change completely by December 31, 2015. It is simply a reference date for ASEAN countries to achieve 100 percent economic integration. The fact that 99.6 percent of goods in the region are trading at zero tariff since 2010 means that the integration is happening now. What we should talk about is how strong we are to be part of it,” Habito said. PHILIPPINES ‘WELL-POSITIONED’ FOR ASEAN INTEGRATION

The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013 grew by 7.2 percent, surpassing the government’s expected target of 6% to 7% despite the economic challenges a year ago.The Philippines also posted strongest two years of GDP growth in 2012 and 2013. GDP in the Philippines was worth 272.02 billion US dollars in 2013. Average GDP in the Philippines is 60.12 USD Billion from 1960 until it reached an all-time high of 272.02 USD Billion in 2013. In fact, during the first two quarter last year, it recorded the highest GDP growth rate in Asia, followed by China and Indonesia. National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) deputy directorgeneral Emmanuel Esguerra noted the growing confidence of international

business in favor of the Philippine economy. The country won last year its first investment-grade scores from debt-watchers Moody’s Investor Service, Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor’s. World Bank data also shows that foreign direct investment almost double to $2.8 billion in 2012 from 2008. The Philippines continues to show significant improvement in the World Economic Forum’s “global competitiveness” index. It climbed 7 notches higher to 52nd out of 140 countries in the world, from last year’s 59th place in the global competitiveness ranking. The Philippines’ seven-notch jump this year is the biggest improvement among ASEAN nation. The country is also considered the biggest gainers among the nations surveyed for it has climbed 33 spots since 2010. In the similar recent Global Competitiveness Index, the Philippines got a score of 6 indicating that the country is well positioned to seize the opportunities as a member of an integrated community. These results show the country’s readiness for the upcoming ASEAN integration. But how will this integration work for our business and economy? OPPORTUNITIES FOR PH BUSINESS SECTOR

Through the AEC, local businesses will have more opportunities for regional expansion and productivity enhancement. The ASEAN region has a large market of approximately 600 million people, with a combined GDP of US$2.2 trillion in 2011 and liberalized tariffs. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) study, the trade integration could expand the Philippine GDP by 7.5% by 2025 compared to a baseline scenario without the integration. The study also projected a net gain of 3.1 million more jobs from 2015 to 2025. “Businesses in the Philippines can engage more in intra-regional trade, increase their market access within and outside of ASEAN, and expand their production capacities in the course of the ASEAN integration,” said Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan, in a speech read by NEDA Deputy Director-General Emmanuel F. Esguerra at the Gawad Sinop Awarding Ceremonies of Supply Link 2014 on March 27, 2014. GOOD NEWS TO LABOR

The upcoming economic integration opens vast opportunities to different sectors. Businessmen believe that some sectors will stand out but some will not come out as winners. According to Ysmael Baysa, chief finance officer of Jollibee Foods Corp., the services sector especially those highly skilled and middle managers will emerge as the winners in the AEC. In the next five years, young educated Filipinos are going to observe salary increase due to strong demands for their skills locally and abroad, as noted by Baysa during his talk at the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines - ING Forum. According to the latest Labor Force Survey released by Philippine Statistics Authority last June, services take up the largest number of labor force, which grew by 4.8% or 929,000 workers. “Since we have an advantage in terms of the number of skilled workers who are able to speak English, and lower wages than some ASEAN countries, it is more likely that there will be a net flow in our favor,” said Philippine Representative in Taiwan Antonio Basilio. The movement of skilled labor in the region will mainly provide opportunities for our skilled workers to work in other ASEAN countries. 40

The demand for high-skilled workers is projected to grow by 41 percent or 14 million, medium skilled jobs will grow by 22% or 38 million and lowskilled by 24% or 12 million. AEC may offer major employment, wage and productivity benefits but will require more decisive management. CHALLENGES OF REGIONAL INTEGRATION AGRICULTURE

Among the sectors that are lagging behind the economic integration is the country’s agriculture sector which is currently not competitive compared to the markets of Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. Poor farm-to-market linkages, failure to modernize and specialize make the Philippine’s agricultural industry unable to cope with the ASEAN free market. Dr. Rolando Dy noted in his presentation during one of the previous general meetings of Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) that agriculture is significant in the rest of the agribusiness. The agribusiness chain contributes to 30 to 40% of our GDP. Agriculture contributes 12 percent, food manufacturing at 10% and agri-services at 13 to 18%. “The ASEAN economic integration in 2015 will challenge our food supply industry. On a positive note, we can be a competitive player in this field – if we will just focus on our natural advantage, that is being a nation with great agricultural resources,” shared Alan Paul Vargas, General Manager of Farmville Agricultural Source Team (FAST), a Filipino owned food service provider of fresh produce. Despite the high demand for skilled workers, the country’s graduates in 2015 may not be ready for the requirements in the regional market place. It was only this year that K+12 program was implemented, a decision which should have been done 10 years ago. The AEC will greatly affect student mobility, as well as the readiness of the Philippine schools to accept international students. While studying at Stanford Medical School, Dr. Tess (as she is popularly known), thought she had her career plans laid out. She would become a psychiatrist, a suitable choice to execute her longstanding fascination with improving others’ well-being. “I wanted to do psychiatry because I was always concerned and felt that if I could help my patients improve their psychological and emotional well being, help them become happier, then that’s the best gift you can give them,” she says. However, during a dermatology rotation, she made a connection between a patient’s physical appearance and mental state: when skincare issues were treated, his or her mood would improve drastically. This prompted her to reconsider the 48

speciality she would pursue. “I kind of do dermatology and psychiatry at the same time,” she says, defending the assertion that paying attention to skincare is fundamental to our well being, not at all about being vain. After medical school, she applied and was accepted to the dermatology residency program at the University of California, San Diego, competing against thousands of applicants for one of two spots. She was then recruited by a top cosmetic dermatology practice and was trained and mentored by leaders in the field. Even with a plum position that coincides with the career trajectory of someone with an impressive educational background, Dr. Tess did not picture herself staying at the practice for the long haul. “I wanted to practice with freedom. I didn’t care whether or not I made a lot of money,” she reveals. “For me,

happiness is the most important [thing] and I wasn’t happy in that environment so I said, ‘I’m going to do it on my own.’ I hadn’t planned on it, but it was something I realized I had to do for myself.” “Being a Filipino doctor working in the mainstream can be very difficult and at times heartbreaking,” she adds. “You have to always be at the top of your game. To be the best in America, you have to be among the best in the world.” Her practice started off small, with two rooms leased from another doctor, but eventually grew to a point where she needed her own space, which became known as Scripps Ranch Dermatology and Cosmetic Center. She admits that she never aspired to run her own business and practice, but recognized she had untapped potential as an entrepreneur.

“In medical school, you’re not taught about business. Nobody in my family is a doctor or a business person,” Dr. Tess says. “I’ve been

learning on the job and realizing too that I have natural abilities as a business person and as an educator. Sometimes until you challenge yourself, you don’t really realize what you’re able to do.” A decade later, Dr. Tess’ practice, M Beauty Clinic, has four locations in Southern California — San Diego, National City, Del Mar and Glendale — and offers a range of services, such as acne treatment, skin rejuvenation, body shaping, liposuction, regenerative stem cell therapy, spider vein, moles and tattoo removal, among others. She also served as President of the San Diego Society of Dermatologic Surgery, becoming the youngest woman to hold the position, and was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Filipina in the United States. As the old saying goes, the only constant thing in this world is change. For R&B singer and song writer JayR, the transformation he has gone through over the years as an artist resonates in his new album dubbed Elevated, revealing an edgier, more mature version of the multitalented artist. The highly anticipated sequel to this 2010 cover album of OPM classics, Elevated is JayR’s sixth studio album that features 14 original tracks, including the carrier single “Parachute” which is now getting more and more airtime in local FM stations and is set to become another chart-topping hit from the platinum artist. Born Gaudencio Aquino Sillona III in Los Angeles, California, JayR comes from a musically talented family. His father, Gaudencio Sillona, Jr., was a pianist while his mother, Amparo Aquino Sillona, was a singer. Even his siblings, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews are all into music.

“You can say that music really runs in the family. Music has showed me how to live my life. I live for music. I live from music. Without it, I would be the most bored person on earth,” says the 33-year-old musician. With a family like his, JayR became immersed in music at a tender age. At 10, he had his first paying gig singing the Righteous Brothers classic Unchained Melody at a beauty pageant for young girls. JayR’s remarkable career as a performing artist began as a member of First Impression, a music group which later on welcomed another artist and JayR’s good friend Kris Lawrence. JayR was also part of another band, The Howlers, which he formed with other musically inclined members of his family. But the Filipino-American singer admits having to take on a few other jobs before realizing that his quest in life is to create and perform great music. “My family really encouraged me to pursue music as a career,” he tells Balikbayan Magazine. In 2003, the Computer Engineering student at DeVry University flew to the Philippines to cut his own path in the recording world and launch his solo career. JayR took the Philippine music industry by storm with his debut album under Universal Records, Gameface, which gained him a fan base and merited various major music awards. The album, which featured the chart topper “Bakit Pa Ba,” also catapulted him to R&B stardom. “The mixture of R&B and soul music just touches my heart—the chords, riffs and range really inspire me. His dream collaboration, JayR reveals, is a musical collaboration with Brian McKNight. “I’ve seen him perform live and he is so soulful. When he sang Back at One, changing the chords and notes he sang in choruses, it blew me away. I became a lifetime fan.” Asked if he considers himself a great artist, JayR is self-effacing, saying that he can be among the ranks of R&B stalwarts if he continues his hard work on his craft. “I think that doing good not only for yourself but for others is a good starting point for someone to become a successful artist,” he adds. After making a mark in the music scene with the release of his first album, JayR created over the years other well-received albums that further showcased his vocal prowess and established him as the “Philippines’ King of R&B.” With his singing voice being one of his strongest suits, JayR continuously works on improving its quality by vocalizing on a daily basis. “I must sing and practice every day because, as cliché as it sounds, practice makes perfect.” The award-winning artist is a force to be reckoned with not just in singing, for JayR also mesmerizes his audiences through his acting, hosting, in product endorsements, stage productions as well as songwriting. “Inspiration for writing songs comes from all sorts of places. I like to express my feelings through songs. I write from emotion and experience,” he says. Incidentally, love—in all forms and types—has also become a recurring theme for many of the songs he’s written. The love theme is certainly reflected in “Parachute,” the carrier single of his album Elevated. JayR surely knows how to stretch his artistic boundaries, for his latest album is a product of one of his other successful ventures: a record label. Dreaming of having his very own recording studio and record label, the R&B musician founded JAYRS Music in 2006 with the motivation of his late Tito Reny. JayR describes his paternal uncle as a man with amazing vocal quality and a huge fan of Frank Sinatra.

“Losing Tito Reny was very difficult for me and the rest of the family,” he reminisces. Christmas 2006 was the first time that the Sillona family celebrated without their beloved Tito Reny, and so JayR’s first ever Christmas album, Christmas Away from Home, featured songs especially dedicated to him. JayR’s record label venture was renamed as Homeworkz Entertainment Services two years later, and the company now manages numerous talented artists, including the likes of Kley, Salbakuta, Q-York, and JayR’s girlfriend Mica Javier. JayR says that starting a record label isn’t difficult at all. “The real challenge is to become a successful record label, and the key is good music and good business.” Being an artist himself, JayR says he understands how to work with fellow artists and help promote their music. “I learn a lot from the artists at Homeworkz. Everyone works hard and makes good music in their own way. Working with artists who are proactive makes the task a lot easier for me. We all help each other. We’re like one big team,” adds the entrepreneurial artist. Another brilliant Homeworkz talent is none other than JayR’s sister Jhing who’s starting to make a name for herself for her distinctive sound and beautiful melodies. The siblings teamed up for the Elevated album with the single, “Farewell.” “We know each other so well that we can put together a song just like that—and it’s not just some average song,” says the proud brother. In Elevated, JayR also collaborated with other artists for the first time, namely Marie Digby, Gabi Wilson, AJ Rafael, Mica Javier, and DJ Riddler. Expectations are high for Elevated, JayR’s fourth studio album under Homeworkz, especially after the four-year wait from the Philippines’ King of R&B. “I wanted to create something very special, take myself to another level and certainly up the ante. I worked very hard on Elevated to show the public how I’ve evolved as a singer and songwriter. I believe that it’s a great album and I do hope people will love it,” says JayR. at the age of 25 and is definite that he won’t give an exact date or cut off time because as said by DJ Nick himself, he has just “started.” Given the chance of just recently starting his career, he believes that it will give him plenty of business adventures and open up more doors in the future. Besides spinning, Ferrer is making sure he could pass down his experiences and teachings by investing his time on a different artist as another option. This will help him show others that he just wants to get as much influence and impact on young upcoming DJs like him to be as well developed and inspired. His open-minded share of passion is what gives him a unique aura. There is nothing wrong with sharing thoughts and experiences to others who are in need of advice. Grabbing the attention of the crowd is not a hard task to do when it comes to Nick. His energy in performing live is beyond the limit.

Standing in one place is something he does not prefer to do. He makes sure that he gives them his 100 percent undivided attention to all of the listeners so that they know what they’re in for. There also came a time during one of his live performances where he ended up crowd surfing and stage diving during his set. You’ll be lucky enough to experience this if the event ends up being one crazy, spectacular night. Nick Ferrer had his very first gig at the age of 19. A good friend of his gave him a shot as an opening for his set. In the US to be admitted in a club you would have to be at the legal age of 21, so once he finished his set he had to leave right away. It was a great and extraordinary experience for him to be given that opportunity and it was just the beginning of many more performances in his life. Knowing that local celebrities and basketball players were there to watch him spin during his first ever live set made him very nervous. It started from 9 and ended at 12 midnight. Ever since that night it impacted him in a way where it inspired him to go forth and make more dreams into actual reality. It gave him practice, skill, and confidence in himself

throughout his career. He felt as if it made him more presentable when he performed. The more he mixed live, the more it gave him the courage to improve and be comfortable in his own skin. It pushed him to strive to become better. As a child Nick Ferrer was already quite influenced and surrounded by music. His family members were very musically inclined. Most of them played the guitar and some even played the piano. Having a set of turntables as a child pushed him forward to having an idea of his experiences with spinning records today. At the age of 11 he has recalled sneaking into the room that held the turntables and playing around with them. That was when he realized and knew that this was something that just came naturally to him. Ferrer’s plans on coming back to the Philippines are indecisive as of now but he is sure that he would love to make this his second home. “I wasn’t born here, but I take a lot of pride on being a FilipinoAmerican,” shares Nick. Feeling comfortable and a sense of belongingness are some of the reasons why he loves being in the Philippines. “Everyone just seems so happy”

For the freelance travel and documentary photographer Jacob Maentz and his wife Nahoma, it was not just the helping hands that kept their advocacy to help indigenous communities rolling. It was their hopes and commitment to inspire people – most especially the people who form these indigenous groups, by conveying the message that it is not yet too late to rejuvenate their waning yet fascinating culture. Since the project started, the couple have been traveling to the most remote areas of the Philippines just to pursue their will to get first-hand information about the indigenous groups. Jacob used his knowledge and skills in photography to showcase the depth of their traditions and bring about change that will put a stop to the public’s wrong perception about indigenous communities. Today, Jacob and Nahoma have received a generous amount of support from people who voluntarily offer their time, resources, and efforts in helping the Katutubong Filipino Project prosper.

It all started when Jacob and Nahoma traveled to the Sierra Madre mountains for a documentary project about the Agta and Dumagat communities two years ago. Their simple two-week visit led to a life-changing experience that allowed them to witness a truly challenging way of life. They saw the communities’ everyday struggles in keeping whatever little they had in life safe and protected. The couple learned that there’s an upcoming project to develop a road that would connect the Sierra Madre mountains to the small towns of Maconacon and Divilican. The Agta and Dumagat communities were well aware that this project would jeopardize not only their land but also their food, medicine, and most of all, their peace of mind. With this the couple tried to help the people research about the Philippine indigenous communities - only to find out that there was not much available information about these groups. This made them realize that something had to be done in order to change the situation in Cordillera and in many areas in the country where indigenous communities are present. And with the right amount of knowledge about the situation and help from the right people, a solution had finally surfaced – the Katutubong Filipino Project. #!-%$-(&$%!&$,"-01$"2$%!31$-45"*-*67

Katutubong Filipino Project aims to educate the general public about the condition of the Philippine archipelago’s indigenous people. It also seeks to change the public’s oftentimes negative perception and attitude towards them. By crafting and producing informative videos and captivating images that showcase indigenous communities’ changing and disappearing cultures, the project schemes to let the people see how interesting and beautiful every community’s traditions and customs are.

To take one of the many steps in reaching their goals, Jacob and Nahoma spearheaded the launch of the Kickstarter campaign – a video that became a helpful tool in reaching hundreds of people and in seeking their support in continuing a life-changing journey to helping the Philippine’s indigenous people. The project became a success and in just two months, Jacob and Nahoma received over $110,000 pledges from approximately 156 backpackers. They used the fund to gather more stories as a way of support to the Katutubong Filipino Project. The couple traveled off the beaten track and embraced the little inconveniences of reaching out to different indigenous communities throughout the country.

A couple of months ago, Jacob spent a week traveling on foot and unfolding stories of the Mansaka people who were identified as one of the first settlers in Compostela Valley, Mindanao. The tribe is just one of the many indigenous groups living in Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte. Despite centuries of relocations and intermarriages of the Malays, Indonesians, and the Chinese, the Mansaka people have maintained their incredible sense of ownership and pride in their cultural heritage and distinctiveness. It cannot be hidden that there are changes happening within the tribe but it also did not stop them from conserving their customs and beliefs. The elder Mansakas continue to pass down the traditions to the younger generation and that’s why each and everyone in the tribe still know what it truly means to be a Mansaka.

For hundreds of years, the Mansaka people have nurtured their tribal livelihood by farming their land and growing crops such as corn, vegetables, fruits, coffee, and abaca. But because of the logging access roads and large mining companies that came in during the 1960s and 1970s, many Mansaka people have opted to finding new forms of income. The mining companies started accepting Visayan migrants as workers that led to attracting larger corporations to proliferate the area. Nowadays, gold mining has become one of the main sources of income among families in Compostela Valley. Most workers would spend a day collecting soil and stones on the river edge before processing it with the hopes of extracting gold. Gold mining has improved many Mansaka families’ financial income resulting to helping them elevate their economic status. Although civilization has brought a lot of changes in the lifestyle of the Mansaka tribe, many efforts and initiatives that aim to safeguard their traditions are still present. There’s a university in Davao that provides educational opportunities to indigenous people’s youth, an upcoming museum in Tagum dedicated to showcasing the beauty of Mansaka tribe’s tradition, and an annual event known as Kaimonan Festival celebrated to give honor their tribal music, songs, and dances. Here, everything is surreal: the cobblestones look foreign against your modern footwear; your de rigueur clothing stands out from the throng of private staff dressed in Filipinianas and camisas de chino; taking your smart phone, the image of historical houses you’re trying to capture appears unseemly from your screen. Astounded, you ponder on reality against the vision before you. Dexter Manansala, your jaunty tour guide, pulls you out of your reverie; with a handful of floppy hats—for temporary use, although similar merchandise can be bought at the local souvenir shop—to brace the bright, summer sun, he beckons you to embark on a journey to revisit the past and relive the old splendor robbed by high-rise buildings and homogeneous modern structures.

Dexter narrates every story behind each ancestral house in true thespian fashion. With each pause, you anticipate the subsequent proceedings like you were taken back in time reliving history, firsthand. He motions toward every nook and crevice of each house you get to recounting its antiquity and the hard work and artistry that went into creating each part from the wooden balusters down to each piece of brick used in the restoration. The houses you visit leaves you both inspired and grateful that the Philippines truly has a magnificent history and that some people are striving to preserve that invaluable handiwork. Architect Jose Rizalino “Jerry” Acuzar, owner of New San Jose Builders which is the sole contractor for the entire restoration in the property, aspires to showcase the traditions distinct to our culture through local talent, ingenuity, and craftsmanship. This is evident in each refurbished ancestral house: The massive murals ubiquitous in major walls [Figure 1] are singlehandedly sketched by their chief painter Cesar Sarmiento, while the finishing touches for the mosaic are manually glued by the women of Bagac [Figure 2 ]; Each dent on the baluster chiseled by the skillful hands of wood carvers from Paete, Laguna [Figure 3 ] is a spectacle of pure creativity and skill; The wallpapers encumbering every room is a manifestation in itself as each is personally hand-painted and laid out on silkscreens.

Your eyes still bright with excitement, you end your day with a reconnected soul to the past. At around 8 A.M., you wake up to the chirping of birds and the soft thrashing of waves against the shore. Should you wish, you might set out on a morning swim in the pool near your casa, or a walk along the beach washing your feet with tepid sea water. Breakfast is served at Cafe Marivent as early as 7 A.M.. Dexter picks you up at around 10 A.M. on a golf cart. Today, there will be less walking. You arrive at the first workshop where the bricks used in the entire restoration are created. These bricks, as you can see, are singularly mixed, molded, air-dried, and baked. The entire process in making a single

brick takes about 2 months. And the massive brick oven towering in the middle makes about 1500 bricks per batch. You could only imagine how difficult it would have been in the past when they were bereft with modern technology and tools to make such materials. The next workshop is where all the furnitures and wood materials are carved and cut. You hear a symphony of thump and knock as each chisel is hammered against pieces of wood. Despite saw dust in the air, you marvel at the craftsmanship of our local artists and the exceptional effort that went into creating the beautiful houses you see all across the property.

There is true beauty in the bygone years and that in taking pride of our rich and colorful past, we may keep a sincere hope for the future.

Day 2 | 24 December It’s an unfamiliar scene to wake up to the sound of chirping birds and the gentle howling of the wind. Unusual, but pleasant nonetheless. The light piercing through your capiz window is urging you to start your day with a bright disposition, which, you reckon, would not be a challenge what with the smell of butter and maple syrup beckoning you. You’re up and ready at round 7A.M., grab a healthy but filling breakfast at the bed-and-breakfast buffet before you head out for an early check out. There’s plenty of time to visit the Panaderia to buy some to-go goodies. Is It Real? Several weeks ago, I received an email from a young entrepreneur in New York. The subject of her email was, “Is it real?” She asked me whether or not the growth, modernization, and emergence of the country are indeed real. Whether or not what we write about—the modern developments and investment opportunities—is actually lucrative and not simply “baseless, advertising fluff.” As I read her message, her cynicism was clear. She wrote that at family parties her aunts and uncles would describe the government corruption, the traffic, the poverty, the gap between the rich and the poor, and the culture of crab mentality—of a society wherein its people pull each other down. She closed her email by thanking us for a magazine that not only highlights the beautiful destinations and business opportunities of the country, but also a publication dedicated to promoting the Filipino culture which, in her words is “Inspiring.” This cynicism and sharp skepticism about the Philippines’ progression

particularly amongst the younger generations of Fil-Ams (and even perhaps among the older generations far and wide) are indeed real. I often read the daily newspapers in the Philippines and peruse the online article comments to gain the pulse of the readers. One particular article about a Fil-Am promoting Philippine coffee caught my attention. One rather vitriolic reader comment struck me: “Filipinos listen…She is not a Filipino! She is an American. She is not a proud Filipino! She is a proud American. Stop claiming she’s a Filipino.” I sent the article to several friends in the media industry in the Philippines and asked if this sentiment was common—if there was an existing or growing animosity toward Fil-Ams. Quickly, this became a dinner conversation and needless to say, it is still an ongoing discussion with a myriad of new questions and mixed emotions. So I decided to conduct a poll. I asked twenty friends (from various industries ranging from media, advertising, academia, and business) who were all born and living in the Philippines if they had the chance to move to the States, would they? Symmetrically, ten said yes, and ten said no. Of the ten that said yes exclaimed that they would absolutely move, but eventually return to the Philippines after the experience no matter what. The ten that said no, said no because the Philippines is on the cusp of greatness (and that it is too difficult to leave family behind regardless of the opportunity). I polled another twenty friends, this time, people who were all born in the US and asked them if they would move to the Philippines. All twenty (Fil-Am) friends said wholeheartedly that they would absolutely move to the Philippines. However, all twenty said they would prefer to be in and out freely.

And perhaps that, in itself, is the difference. Understandably, within the print confines of this magazine, our readers can only grasp a snippet of what the Philippines is actually like and becoming. But what the magazine hopes to accomplish is to pique the interest of its readers—to open the door and invite dialogue about the Philippines, the people, the culture, the history, you name it. Recently, we have been filming and documenting our weekly travel experiences and assignments in the Philippines and turning this into our very own travel and culture show. We are hopeful that through this we can make the pages of our magazine come alive and communicate a unique message, perspective, and narrative about the Philippines’ exciting emergence—because frankly the emergence is real. There are millions of different personal stories with incredibly different backgrounds, but I believe that many do share the same advocacy for and optimism about the country. Whatever your opinion, I hope that you, like the young entrepreneur from New York, will speak up and join the conversation with us as we head into 2015 and beyond.
