03 MESSAGE

“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither — whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:3 I would like to welcome, with my warmest greetings, our snowbirds visiting the Philippines this February 3 to 11, 2018 for Winter Escapade 5. We have hosted this extraordinary tour since 2014 and now, on its fifth year, it continues to bring more than a thousand Filipinos and Canadians to different parts of the Philippines to experience its rich diversity, natural wonders, and world-renowned hospitality. This year, the participants will have a first-hand view of how Negros reinvented itself to be the popular culinary destination it is today. They will then visit Davao, the Durian Capital of the Philippines also known as the “Crown Jewel of Mindanao,” which will showcase a variety of reasons, such as flora and fauna endemic to the area, why it is a prime tourism and business location today. I believe that these tours will eventually bear fruit in giving the world a taste of the beauty that is the Philippines and endear all people to the warmth of the Filipino. I thank our steadfast partners, the Department of Tourism, Tourism Promotion Board, and local government units who have made Winter Escapade successful over the years. As our tour participants prepare to explore these new destinations, I welcome you all and thank you for choosing to winter in the Philippines this year. May you all find in our islands the respite you need from winter. God bless you all. God bless the Philippines.

04 MESSAGE

As we embark on the fifth season of Winter Escapade- It’s More Fun in the Philippines (WE-IMFITPH), I wish all our participants a warm welcome. From the sandy beaches of Boracay and Palawan, the mango orchards of Guimaras, the rich marine life of Dumaguete and Cebu, and the heritage cities of Ilocos and Panay, Winter Escapade 5 now brings you to the diverse and colorful landscapes of Bacolod and Davao. While North America braces itself for a remarkably chilly winter this year, we will soak in the hotsprings of Mambukal under the lush canopy of Mt. Kanlaon’s rainforest and sink our feet in the pristine sands of Lakawon Island while basking in the warm Philippine sun. Together, we will take a trip back to a more genteel time in Negros Occidental’s heritage homes and savor the delicacies that have become a hallmark of Negros life. In Davao, we will see a microcosm of the Philippines as we take in the city’s diverse cultural heritage as the melting pot of Mindanao. We will explore the Philippines’ oldest banana plantation, immerse ourselves in the unrivaled wildlife in the region, and taste the fruits of the region’s pioneering efforts towards sustainable, eco-friendly agricultural tourism. I take this opportunity to thank the Department of Tourism, Tourism Promotions Board, and local government units for their continued support for the Winter Escapade and enjoin everyone to don their sunglasses and sunscreen as we bring the tour to new frontiers.

On behalf of the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), a warm welcome to the delegates of the 5th Winter Escapade-It’s More Fun in the Philippines Tour PH 2018! I am ecstatic to learn that an increasing number of tourists from Canada and the USA chose to spend their winter holidays in the tropical paradise we call home. Thank you for the opportunity to show you all about our over 7,000 islands, the warmth of the Filipino smile and of course, the widely renowned Filipino brand of service that we give from the heart. I can tell you that the Philippines and the Filipinos are truly world class. Amazing destinations that deserve equal billing will be showcased in the 5th Winter Escapade. Manila, Bacolod and Davao all possess unique qualities that make them stand out among the multitude of places you can visit in the country. What makes these destinations even more appealing are their geographical location, with each belonging to one of the Philippines’ 3 major island groups. Our valued guests can sample culture, adventure, ecotourism, relaxation, sports and many more to suit their tastes, making their vacation memorable and more fun all the way! The 5th Winter Escapade program has brought about another viable way to increase awareness of our brand to the highly competitive North American market. We are proud to say that slowly but surely, the Philippines is gaining positive ground in the collective psyche of the Canadians and the Americans, proof of which is our growing visitor arrivals. North America accounts for nearly 17.31% of our total international visitor arrivals, to the tune of 1,039,651 as of November 2017. While official numbers have yet to be tallied for the full year, I am convinced that we have hit our targets for a remarkable year for Philippine tourism. This, and many more things are a cause of celebration. Join the country in marking this feat by savoring your time well in the Philippines. 10 days will breeze by when you’re enjoying yourself, and I know that you’ll be looking forward to spending more time in the Philippines in the near future. Don’t forget to bring home a friend with you next Winter, and we shall be anticipating your return soonest. In the meantime, don your slippers, put on your sunscreen and shades and get ready for a trip to remember. Mabuhay!

No, this is not the Taj Mahal, I am talking about the Lacson Mansion Ruins. It was once an imposing structure in the middle of a 440 hectare plantation, a true testament of Don Mariano’s love to his wife, Maria. But all good things must come to an end. During the early part of World War II, the guerilla forces under American command were constrained to raze the mansion to the ground so as to keep the occupying Japanes forces from using it as headquarters. The resulting 3-day inferno brought down the roof and the two-inch wooden floors, but the entire skeletal frame remains intact to this day.
