What’s Next?

few days ago while having lunch with my friends, I noticed that a few of them took pictures of the food. This in turn sparked a conversation about the rise of social media and peoples’ desire to share what they are doing—to post a status update. One of my friends said, “If you don’t photograph it and post it, then it never happened.” I thought this was a rather profound statement—the need for visual proof. As our discussion progressed, we were debating the pros and cons of being able to quickly share information instantly. Indeed, there are immense powers of social media that perhaps we have yet to fully comprehend. Having the ability to quickly share information in times of danger or emergency, to make someone laugh or entertain, or simply to share knowledge have enormous benefits. However, at the same time, it is incredibly influential—it can make us smarter, change decision-making and opinions immediately or over the course of time. But when certain information gets into the wrong hands, the results can be quite

terrifying—which is why the role of media is incredibly important and valuable. We can shape, define, and ensure the quality of the narrative in order for the audience to make informed, sound decisions. Despite recent news headlines in terms of terrorism and war, climate change, and the volatility of the global economy just to name a few, I have not wavered from being optimistic about the future of our World—I find it too troublesome to be consumed by cynicism or pessimism—as a parent, you have to be. Yet, we have to remember to pause, analyze, and think about where we are going and what’s next. If we are afraid or unhappy, we must decide to make bold changes. Truly the World has changed and become thousands of times more complex despite the advancements in technology that makes our lives easier, more organized, more intelligent, and more connected. I have 5 children and I often wonder what kind of World they will be living in when they are my age. I also wonder, has the World always been this scary? Or is it because information can seemingly be shared, read, and watched from every

corner of the Planet and we can quickly find out and learn about what is going on? As an optimist, I prefer to believe that the best is yet to come, for a developing and rising nation like the Philippines—surely this is true—and you can absolutely count on the Asian Journal to report on what’s happening in our Motherland and within the Global Filipino community. Living in the Philippines is very different from living in the United States. For example, in the U.S., there have been more mass shootings than days in 2015. Parents live in fear, worrying if their children are even safe at school— this is not a problem in the Philippines. Growing up, my friends would dream of moving to America. But today and much more frequently, I now hear my friends say, “I wish I could live and retire in the Philippines.” And that, in itself, is perhaps what’s next in 2016. –– Roger L. ith the creation of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), APEC is no longer simply a government affair. ABAC recommends policies to government leaders and with that, public and private partnerships are formed. For the Philippines, the council is comprised of shipping magnate Doris Magsaysay-HO, Ayala Corporation Chairman and CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Jollibee Foods Chairman Tony Tan Caktiong, and Guillermo Luz of the National Competiveness Council.

Preparation and Return on Investment For the past three years, the Philippines prepared to be the host nation of APEC 2015. These preparations included security, airport arrivals, transportation, venues, food, uniforms, architecture, hotels, and cultural presentations. Driving from Bonifacio Global City or Makati to Manilaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main International Airport, the capital cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dense traffic explodes into absolute chaos. However, it is not simply the result of the countless number of cars ravaging MetroManila, but also the tenuous development

of the brand new, towering, four-lane expressway leading to new casinos, hotels, resorts, and restaurants. Just a few days removed from the terror attacks in Paris and Beirut and several days after the bombing of a commercial plane over Egypt, the Philippines found itself in a peculiar position as the host nation for global leaders in politics, business, and diplomacy. Scores of industry leaders came to the country to discuss foreign investment and trade partnerships in order to drive inclusive economic growth on the macro and micro level. Undoubtedly, security was the biggest challenge as arrangements were much more stringent and complicated than when the country first hosted APEC in the pre9/11 era, back in 1996, or even just recently when Pope Francis visited in January 2015. Having been the center for high profile leaders and meetings, the country was able to prove to the world that the Philippines is a safe, secure, peaceful, and beautiful nation. Simply put, the government had no choice but to “fix up” Ninoy Aquino International Airport along with the roads leading up to the venues in order to put the best face forward. However, critics questioned that if the country can make necessary preparations to host global leaders in such a short time span, then why can’t the government do it for their own people? Looking at the return on investment from the time Vietnam hosted APEC back in 2006, Vietnam has now received over $189 billion in total foreign direct investment (FDI) dating from 2006 to 2014. In addition to FDI, trade has significantly increased for Vietnam as well with bilateral trade between Vietnam and China now valued at $42.3 billion in 2014 alone. During the same period, VietnamU.S. trade has reached $25.5 billion, and Vietnam-South Korea trade is respectively valued at $20.9 billion. Just under a decade from it’s hosting, it is clear that Vietnam made a sound investment. Today, Vietnam has the third lowest unemployment rate in ASEAN, behind Thailand and Singapore. Unemployment rate in the Philippines in 2014 is almost the same as Vietnam’s in 2000. Speaking at the APEC CEO Summit, President Aquino, when asked about his specific message to investors, said, “I guess the central message is: We really invite you to come in now rather than tell us two years or three years from now that you should

have listened to our advice.” The President went on to cite specific cases of Japanese and American manufacturing companies that invested in the Philippines because of their belief in the potential of the country and the kind of workforce the country has to offer. The country continues to splurge on infrastructure development—with 57 projects in the pipeline for 2016 and beyond. Just last November 26, 2015, the Senate voted for P3.002 trillion as the national budget for 2016.

The Philippines hosted APEC under the theme, “Building Inclusive Economies, Building a Better World,” as the country desires to push for inclusive growth, which is hallmarked by the role of small and medium enterprises—which makes up 97% of business in APEC economies. This is largely considered to be the APEC Summit’s major highlight several economists praise. In the Philippines, SMEs account for a third of the gross domestic product and employ more than half of the entire domestic labor market. However, the government must first solve policy gaps and conflicts

in making the business environment more inviting and friendly both internationally and domestically. In 2014, the Philippines’ GDP has ballooned to $284.60 billion from $82.85 billion in 1996. Because of the significant rise of the Philippines in the past several years, many member-economies have grown to be intrigued and curious about what’s fueling the growth of the nation. Last year, China showcased its infrastructure developments. The Philippines showcased its English proficiency and the hospitality of Filipinos that is unrivaled in the entire region. annual growth rate in the entire region. According to the World Bank, in terms of GDP, the Philippines represents 0.5% of the world economy—making it have the status of a lower middle-income country. The Philippines has significantly benefited from being a member nation of APEC since the total export receipts to APEC member economies amounts to $52.7 billion from 2014 to 2015. The country’s top exports to APEC include electronic products, manufactures, woodcraft and furniture, machinery and transport equipment, and minerals with the major trading partners being Japan, the United States, China, Singapore, and South Korea. The economic policies pursued over the past three decades have also contributed to the growth and expansion of the middle

class in the Philippines. When economic production and growth is productive, unemployment should be lower and income should increase as businesses hire labor to meet the demands of the growing economy. A healthy and stable economy indicates high consumption and production would equate to higher profits for companies, which in turn creates more jobs. With 4% of the national gross domestic product (GDP) going toward infrastructure, the Philippines’ primary focus is to maintain economic growth, which is fueled and ignited by a recent spike in foreign direct investment (FDI). Since 2010, money pouring into the country has tripled. Yet, FDI accounts for only 1.4% of the national income, which remains significantly lower than the Philippines’ regional counterparts. In 2016, this is expected to remarkably rise. As the tiger economies continued to mature for the past few decades, the Philippines is finally showing signs of maturation of its own. E-Peso begins its work of transforming communities into cashless societies

Presently, 90% of transactions in the Philippines are still cash-based. he Philippines is projected to become a $1-trillion economy by 2030, and is cited by international analytics firm IHS Global Insight as the only sovereign entity in Asia with improving credit prospects.IHS, whose reports are used as reference by other organizations including credit-rating agencies, investment banks, and development institutions, cited the trend of improving financial fundamentals, investor confidence, and governance standards in the Philippines. In its “Sovereign Risk Review” report for the third quarter of 2015, IHS, which also assigns its own credit ratings, said it upgraded its outlook on the Philippines’ credit rating from “stable” to “positive.” The improved outlook means that the Philippines’ existing credit rating with IHS, set at the minimum investment grade of “BBB-“, has a chance of being raised over the near term. The Sovereign Risk Review compares and assesses every sovereign worldwide across ratings agencies. IHS said in the report that what’s more encouraging about the Philippines is that the strong macroeconomic fundamentals are combined with improvements in governance. “…apart from the clearly strengthened macro-financials over the last few years, the more recent upgrade to the Philippines’ outlook to positive in Q3 rested on improved governance standards and reforms enhancing competitiveness under the

Aquino administration,” it said in the report. The Philippines is the only sovereign in Asia that garnered a positive action from IHS. IHS recognized the Philippines’ comfortable liquidity as evidenced by sustained surpluses in its current account, as well as continually improving manageability of debt on the back of prudent fiscal management and growing economy. The Philippines’ current account – fueled by remittances, revenues from the business process outsourcing industry, and tourism receipts, among others – posted a surplus of $4.7 billion during the first six months of 2015. The country’s current account has been in surplus for 12 consecutive years, or since 2003. The Philippines’ general government debt as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), a measure of debt manageability, is on a downward trend. It stood at 36.2 percent as of end-June 2015, consistently declining from a peak of 68.1 percent in 2003. “The Philippines has been on a long ratings upgrade trajectory over the last few years. The key driver to these upgrades has been successively strong current account surplus generation with newfound sources of export earnings other than workers’ remittances and lower energy import bills,” Jan Randolph, IHS director of sovereign risk, said in a statement. Rajiv Biswas, IHS chief economist for Asia-Pacific, estimated that the Philippines, with a gross domestic

product of about $292 billion, has the potential to become a $695-billion economy by 2025 and over a $1-trillion economy by 2030. “Two important growth drivers for the Philippines’ economy are the rapidly growing information technology-business process outsourcing (IT-BPO) sector and the strong flow of remittances from Filipino workers abroad,” Biswas said. “The rapid growth of the IT-BPO industry is also creating positive transmission effects for the rest of the economy, including rapid growth in demand for commercial floor space, underpinning the development of existing and new office parks in urban centers,” Biswas added. Meanwhile, Investor Relations Office (IRO) Executive Director Editha L. Martin said the favorable views of IHS on the Philippines would help in further improving international perception of the economy. “Although the Philippines now enjoys investment grade sovereign credit ratings from a wide list of international debt watchers, further building confidence on the economy is a never-ending task as we aim for sustainability of gains. The positive assessment of IHS on the Philippines is a welcome development,” Martin said. She cited the concrete benefits of favorable credit ratings, including lower interest rates on loans as well as business confidence that helps boost investments and job creation.

BIG DATA GETTING BIGGER ON DEMAND Now we venture into the race on gathering consumer data, putting everything that users do online under surveillance so digital marketers may be able to create more predictive, targeted, and engaging campaigns. Gathering digital data means social media analytics, digital transactions with impressions, up to software-processing everything about your digital behavior and so much more. This is very crucial, given that the Philippines is the top country in the world with the time most spent in the Internet, with a daily average of 6.3 hours on laptops and desktops and an average of 3.3 hours on mobile according to data of wearesocial.sg, an international media agency that does social and digital monitoring for their global campaigns. However, it was not determined whether it’s because it takes our Internet connection 10 times longer than our neighboring countries, or we are just simply that digitally present all the time. Eric Alberto, PLDT executive vice president, explained that the global wallet for data is expected to grow to about $230 billion over the next five years from its current level of $150 billion as big companies find the relevance for information, the more likely the need would increase. Alberto, who is also president of ePLDT, said the big data solutions would allow enterprises to analyze openly available data and gain insights that drive predictive and data-driven decision-making in their businesses. “Big data drives our everyday lives. Every action generates data, which become valuable insights that empower enterprises, organizations, government agencies, and even small and medium enterprises to develop more effective products, services, and programs for their target markets,” Alberto said. Why has this created such a huge impact to our advertising and media community? “We’re moving towards the direction where both [social and mainstream media] have no choice but to coexist,” said by Boy Abunda, a Filipino television host, publicist, talent manager and celebrity endorser. This is a trend that a lot of advertising and media agencies are banking on. As everyone pursues to create 360 degree campaigns, the “Aldub” phenomenon creates a case study on social and real-time engagement. or those who are not the adventurous type of investor, mutual funds and unit invest trust fund (UTIF) are savvy options. Mutual funds are a type of investment wherein you join other investors to form a massive fund that will be invested in various securities depending on the investment objective of the fund. The pool of funds is handled by an expert called fund manager. The mutual fund company issues the investor a certain number of shares based on your amount of investment. Profit from mutual funds are based on the NAVPS (Net Asset Value per Share) from the time you open an ac-

count to the time you close the account or redeem your money. The higher the investment and the longer it is invested, the higher the return or profit. (See Image 01) On the other hand, UITF is sold by banks. You purchase units of participation in the fund, whose value is called the Net Asset Value per Unit (NAVPU). This reflects the current market prices of the instruments that make up the UITF. The NAVPU rises or falls depending on the movement of market prices. Since UITFs are sold and managed by commercial banks, these are supervised by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.2 (See Image 02)

In the long-term, PSEi is projected to trend around 7760.00 in 2020, 10600.00 in 2030, and 14100.00 Index points in 2050, according to econometric models. “The PSEi outlook will be fundamentally good because of the upcoming elections and higher GDP growth rate,” Financial Adviser and Financeph.com President Mark Fernandez told Balikbayan Magazine. he year 2015 has been “a great time for PH property market” according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). And for the upcoming year, the real estate industry will continue to further grow. One good real estate investment is buying a condo then renting it out or investing in condotels. The advent of “condotels” has redefined not just the concept of condominiums but also of investment. Condotel is a condominium project, which is operated as a hotel offering short-term rentals complete with a registration desk, cleaning service and more amenities. The units are individually owned and automatically leased back to the developer, where it is then rented out like any other hotel room. Unlike condominiums, condotel owners don’t need to pay monthly maintenance & condominium dues, maintenance fees and real property taxes. Based on a study made by global property portal Lamudi Philippines, the average price of condominiums in Las Piñas (Php64,276 per sqm) and & Muntinlupa (Php60,804 per sqm) are cheaper compared to condominiums in Manila, Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Pasig (Php95,134, Php88,174, Php87,294, and Php80,329 per sqm, respectively). Office real estate will also become a

viable investment option due to strong demand and low supply. Property developers are already offering stratatitled office developments to address increasing demand for office real estate. According to Jacqueline van den Ende, Founder and Managing Director of Lamudi Philippines, development will spread outside Metro-Manila. As early as 2014, real estate development in second-tier cities such as Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo, Davao, and even cities in Luzon near Metro Manila like Angeles, Santa Rosa, Dasmariñas, and Bacoor have begun. By 2016, one of the real estate

investment options to consider is Montemaria, the newest development strategically located at the southernmost tip of Batangas Bay in Batangas City. CAMIGUIN

he first thing you need to know is that Camiguin is an island of volcanic origin located 120 kilometers southeast of Cebu and 90 kilometers north of Cagayan de Oro. This pear shaped, volcanic island houses more volcanoes than its actual towns, with Mount Hibok Hibok as the only active volcano that is expected to erupt every fifty to sixty years—its last recorded activity was back in 1950. During lent, devotees would walk around the island and trek up to the old volcanoes in observance of the Panaad festival which is similar to a traditional Walk of Penitence done by Catholics reliving the way of the cross. Second, that as Northern Mindanao’s leading tourist destination, Camiguin is a sell short of natural beauty; from springs to sandbars, everything about this island is nothing short of inspiring.

Where the water never runs dry

One interesting fact about Camiguin is that the water resource comes from several natural springs scattered across the island. Faucets are never closed to keep the pipes from bursting with overflowing water. You will be surprised that your tap water tastes almost like San Pellegrino, minus the carbonated fizz. Exploring the island, you will find a number of hot and cold springs like the Sto. Of heritage sites and historical ruins

Flooded down below sea level during the volcanic birth of Mt. Vulcan in 1871-1875, the gravesite was commemorated by a huge cross erected in 1982. Diving beneath the massive, white cross, you will marvel over the eerie sight of coral laden epitaphs and tombstones. Its neighbor church, the Old Catarman Church, or the Gui-Ob church, still stands with only a few of its surviving ruins and bell tower saved from the mentioned volcanic eruption. Masses are still celebrated in the open passage of the old church.

Natural and extremely breathtaking, both these falls offer a simpler, yet inspiring way to enjoy nature. The Mantigue Island lies near the port area of Camiguin. With a fine, white sand and clear blue waters, this island is one of the best-kept gems of the province. Still subtly popular, there are only a few private and local lodgings in the island. Unlike the White Island sandbar that is smaller in scale, Mantigue offers a more convenient stay for an overnight trip.

1 st stop: University of Santo Tomas

Aside from the National Museum which holds the most extensive exhibit of Galleon Trade relics in the Philippines and illustrates the origins of the Filipino people, University of Santo Tomas (UST) also houses a museum. In fact, the UST Museum is the oldest school-based museum in the country. Originally located in Intramuros, the UST museum was later transferred to its present site at the paraninfo of the UST Main Building. The museum displays six different collections – permanent areas of specimens of natural history, coins, medals and memorabilla, ethnography, oriental arts, visual arts and a hall of Philippine Religious images.

2 nd stop: Santa Ana Heritage Zone

Up for a cultural heritage? The historical district of Santa Ana in Manila is one of the places you shouldn’t miss. Though it’s one of the less-known heritage sites, the community is historically and culturally rich. The Our Lady of Abandoned Church marked the first mission of the Franciscan missionaries outside Manila in 1578, making it one of the oldest churches in the country. The church has also withstood not only time but also natural calamities. During the earthquake in 1880, only the bell tower was damaged. The interior of the 12-meter high nave is dominated by the 18th century retablo behind

the altar depicting a “churrigueresque” style, which is the most exuberantly ornamental phase of the Spanish architectural décor. In 2008, the church’s Camarin dela virgin was declared a National Culture Treasure for the remarkable paintings portraying the life of Christ. It is also one of the few churches left that has a Camarin or little dressing room. After your tour around the church and the convent, walk through the neighborhood which retains its quiet, old world suburban atmosphere that has practically vanished in most parts of urban Manila.

3rd stop: Ayala Museum Located at the heart of the Makati Central Business District, Ayala Museum offers a unique opportunity to go back in time and discover the secrets of the country. Among the museum’s highlights are its collection of archeological artifacts, notably the Gold of Ancestors: Pre-Colonial Treasures in the Philippines; the impressive selection of trade ceramics from Southeast Asia and China; the contemporary art and textile collection “Art and the Order of Nature in Indigenous Philippine Textiles”; and “The Philippine Diorama Experience.”

o need to book a flight to reach a destination like this. Just three to four hours from Metro Manila, Anawangin Cove offers a weekend escapade for all types of nature lovers – beach-goers, hikers, or adventurers. Located in San Antonio, Zambales, this crescent-shaped cove is the most accessible from the village of Pundaquit, the jumpoff point to the ashen beaches of the town.

Going to the island

It usually takes a 3-hour land travel from Manila going to San Antonio. For those taking the public transportation, the easiest route will be taking the bus bound to Iba and get off at San Antonio Public Market. But since buses going to Iba are limited, travelers can ride the bus going to Olongapo City, and then board another bus to San Antonio. From San Antonio town proper, tricycles are available throughout the day to take travelers to the village of Pundaquit. Don’t worry; the village is just 10-15 minutes away from the town proper. From the village of Pundaquit, Anawangin Cove is accessible by boat or by foot. If you can’t wait to go to the pristine beach, take the 30-minute boat ride to reach the island faster. As you navigate from Pundaquit’s coastline, relish the clear blue waters and the view of striking mountains that shortly end in massive sea cliffs. But if you’re the adventure-type of traveler, trekking is a good option. You could hike over Mt. Pundaquit going to the cove, which usually lasts 4-5 hours.

The Beauty after a Fiasco

The moment you set foot on this pristine paradise, be smitten with the powdery white sand beach and tall evergreen trees rising from the shoreline that spreads out into the forest. But be more amazed with the story of how this unspoiled beauty surfaced. Some people said that the coastline of San Antonio used to be rocky. However, after the cataclysmic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo way back in 1991, the nearby islands were dumped with volcanic ashes making it completely unrecognizable. Years later, the lands that were covered by Mt. Pinatubo’s ash fall became extremely fertile. Perhaps, this could be the reason how the Agoho trees started to grow, creating an evergreen forest of what seems like pine trees. Undeniably, Anawangin can be called “a phoenix reborn from the ashes.”

The Perfect Bliss

Aside from appreciating the beauty of nature, you can get complete tranquility on the cove with a twist of adventure. There’s no mobile phone signal in the entire cove, giving you a perfect time to relax and forget the demanding life back in the Metro. The crystal clear waters will definitely entice you to dip in the water the entire day. But the Anawangin cove has more to offer. Behind the pine trees sprawls a river that contributes to the stillness of the place. You can also trek the hill that will give a magnificent view of the entire cove.

Camping is the main game in Anawangin. But the experience of beach camping is perhaps what attracts travelers. If you don’t have your own tent, there are available tents for rent within the camp sites. Cap off your weekend adventure by chilling on the shore, gazing at the stars and feeling the cool sea breeze. If you still have enough time, you can also try island hopping in Camara Island and Capones Island. And if you’ve fallen in love with Anawangin Cove, you’ll surely love the other nearby coves.

TIPS

To enjoy island hopping, schedule it before going to Anawangin Cove. Most islands are rocky and surrounded by coral reefs, boats can get near the islands especially when there are huge waves. So travelers are recommended to get down from the boat and swim/walk going to the island.

There’s a river behind the camping sites where you can experience the traditional river bathe – which you won’t experience in the Metro nowadays.

If you plan to cook/grill, bring charcoal and gas because there’s no available cooking equipment in the island.

Bring enough food and drinking water. There’s a small sari-sari store in the island but items are a bit pricy.
