Oil paints are more resistant than waterbased paints but any splashes and accessories, such as brushes and rollers, must be cleaned with a solvent. Waterbased paints contain fewer VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and can be cleaned with water. For kitchens and bathrooms it is preferable to use oilbased paints. These two types of paint are available in four main finishes: glossy, semi-gloss, satin and matte. Glossy paints are the most resistant and are ideal for protecting baseboards.
