Before you throw yourself into the decoration of the interior of your home, take the time to plan the work. It’s better to plan everything beforehand rather than making mistakes which will be difficult or costly to repair. Start by deciding on the extent of the work. Examine the state of each room and check if your needs have changed. For example, if your children have grown up, it’s perhaps time to rethink their bedrooms. The appliances and the bathroom or kitchen cabinets perhaps need renewing. Or is it the appearance of your bedroom, the living room or the dining room which needs to be changed? If several rooms need to be modified, decide on a common thread (style, colour, material, etc.) to ensure a certain harmony between the rooms. Use quad paper to draw a scaled plan of each room to be decorated, indicating passage ways, windows, doors, fireplace, radiators, etc., and including furniture positioned in the appropriate places. Choose floor coverings which are appropriate for the use of the room and that fit in the surroundings. Paint is an easy and fast way of changing or refreshing a room. Avoid colours which are too dark and difficult to paint over. Choose a shade from your bedding or wallpaper or that harmonizes with your furniture. Applying the principles of Feng Shui will generate the optimum circulation of positive energy in the house. This approach also guides you in the use of colours and advises against some combinations, such as yellow and green, which can induce a feeling of discomfort unless the green is less dominant than the yellow. According to this approach, the position of the colours is also very important. It’s recommended to put colder shades below and warmer shades above. For example, greens below and blues above.
