But before opening the paint can, you should first clean and degrease all surfaces to be painted, and sand down glossy surfaces. Then, be sure to thoroughly cover any surface you don't want painted with masking tape. Next, apply that all-important coat of primer to the walls. If you are using latex paint on a new surface, the primer should also be latexbased. If you're applying latex paint to an already-painted surface, sand it first and then apply a coat of solvent-based primer that will work well with both types of paint. Using a brush, start with all areas around the door and window frames, as well as along the corners of walls. Then, fill in larger areas with a roller, working in sections of about one square metre. Stick to the W-technique if you are painting the ceiling and the M-technique for walls. Without lifting the roller, fill in the unpainted area around the letter you have just painted and continue in this fashion until the entire surface is covered.
