GVHBA’S 17TH ANNUAL

Winners shine at 2010 Georgies

It’s awards season. And the residential construction industry is not immune. Several British Columbian homebuilders and renovators took home a coveted golden statue at the 2010 Georgie Awards at the annual gala Saturday in Vancouver. From industry leader Concert Properties – winner of the Customer Choice award for Multi-Family Production Builder – to small but passionate Quiniscoe Homes – Custom Home Builder of the Year award – the winner’s circle featured a variety of residential

construction industry companies, large and small. “B.C. builders and renovators are the best of the best across the country, and this year’s Georgie Award winners are truly the cream of the crop,” says Vicki Gerrits, president of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of B.C. “This year’s winners – and indeed all finalists as well – are defined by high standards, innovative ideas and a commitment to excellence.” Georgie Awards were handed out in 44 categories to recognize the best of the best in residential home construc-

B.C. talent sweeps SAM Awards B.C.’s residential construction industry is loaded with winners. At the recent Canadian Home Builders’ Association national conference, the SAM Awards were handed out and B.C. builders and renovators “swept” the national awards event, earning 13 out of the 22 awards presented, notes a CHBA BC release. The awards honour excellence in new homes and renovations across the entire country. “Earning a national SAM award is a great achievement in the residential construction industry,” says CHBA BC president Vicki Gerritts. ParkLane Homes took home three SAM awards – more than any other homebuilder – including the coveted Grand SAM award, which is presented every year to a builder for excellence in both building and marketing new homes. The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association notes GVHBA members won seven of the national awards: ParkLane Homes, Boffo Development, Natural Balance Development Group, Artisan Construction and My House Design/Build Team. South Ridge Developments’ Gary Friend won the Beaver Award for most outstanding builder member in Canada, while TD Financial Group’s Ross Gurney won the Maple Leaf award for most outstanding non-builder member in Canada. Two other members – Green Sheet Construction Data’s Simone Sunderland and Mason d’Etre Design/Build’s Rob Capar – were named recipients of CHBA Awards of Honour for their service and dedication at the local level, a GVHBA release says. And last, but not least, GVHBA president and CEO Peter Simpson took home the Ken McKinlay and Susan Chambers awards, for excellence in communication and for most outstanding “initiation and development of non-dues sources of revenue,” present each year to local or provincial chief executive officers. “I was honoured and humbled to receive both awards this year,” Simpson says. Visit http://www.chba.ca/membersarea/your-chba/sam-awards/2010.aspx for full details on the SAMs.

While perusing the entries, the judging panel decided to split the award for Best Innovative Feature into two awards, CHBA BC says. Best Innovative Feature went to Artisan Construction for its secret Zen garden in a Tudor Contemporary home and Best Innovative Technical Feature went to RDC Fine Homes for a progressive solar panel cooling and indoor air pre-heat system. MAC Marketing Solutions swept the marketing categories, including the Marketing Campaign of the Year award – an unprecedented accomplishment never seen before in the history of these awards, according to CHBA BC. Finalists in all categories were selected from hundreds of nominations by a judging panel, consisting of industry experts from outside the province to ensure impartiality. While the Georgies honour industry members throughout the province, Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association president and CEO Peter Simpson notes GVHBA members took home a total of 32 Georgies (of the 45 handed out), as well as seven of 23 CHBA national SAM Awards.

AWARDS SEASON

Simpson extended his congratulations to all finalists and winners throughout B.C., and added the GVHBA has its own renOVATION awards coming up April 15. “Our homes and renovations are the envy of North America, and we should be taking every opportunity to celebrate publicly our members’ achievements,” he says. Visit www.georgieawards.ca to see the complete list of winners.

Old meets new: OnQue

New homes in hip Vancouver community TRICIA LESLIE

T

here’s a new neighbourhood emerging in Vancouver. Yet its roots are immersed in the city’s history. Welcome to SoMa, or SouthMain, a community in the Mount Pleasant region of Vancouver that is expanding and growing every day, yet is right next to the largest concentration of heritage buildings in the city. Whether looking for live music, live lobster or just a lively conversation, South Main is all about lifestyle, and a new Rize Alliance Properties development in SoMa – OnQue – is allowing homebuyers to purchase new homes in the location they want, complete with the lifestyle they’ve always wanted. Mixing heritage style with a decidedly contemporary vibe, OnQue offers old style mixed with new style and tradition blended with the avant garde in the midst of this vibrant, exciting neighbourhood. The lowrise condominium project offers homes that range in size from 639 square feet to 787 sq. ft., with an innovative OnePlusOne floorplan design that has a unique feature: a movable partition. “It’s a custom movable room divider – one side “The Mount has a built-in desk and Pleasant shelving,” says Rize Allineighbourhood ance’s vice-president of sales and marketing Bill is really Szeto, who believes this is growing. It’s a different vibe, a the first time such an idea different feeling has been implemented within Vancouver. than other “We wanted to make (Vancouver) sure the people who neighbourhoods, bought (OnQue homes) but it has its would be able to use the own flavour.” space. (Homebuyers) are really excited about it.” The partition allows the homeowners to create a one-bedroom plan, a onebedroom-plus-den plan, or a master-bedroom-with-small-guest-bedroom plan, or a variety of all three configurations. “There’s three different pieces (to the partition) – if you don’t use all of it, it becomes a bookcase,” Szeto says. Architecturally, OnQue is a blend that combines the traditional and contemporary aspects of the Mount Pleasant/South Main area. The use of brick, stone and wood provides a conscious connection to Mount Pleasant’s industrial past, while the integration of local artists’ and artisans’ work and the use of glass and steel accents speak to an urban, sophisticated – and modern – sensibility. Laminate flooring, stainless steel kitchen appliances and chrome faucets highlight the interiors of the homes, which come in a choice of two different, stylish interior design schemes. Some OnQue plans offer a feature brick wall that combines modern chic and retro style. Homeowners all have access to the south-

Rize Alliance’s OnQue blends the best of both worlds by bringing the heritage and history of Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant area into the future – into an emerging, dynamic neighbourhood brimming with arts, culture, business and entertainment: SoMa, or South Main. facing roof deck and an amenity space that functions as a meeting and entertainment area. “We’re sitting on a bit of a hill, so we have some amazing views starting on the second floor, not the fourth,” Szeto says. “The Mount Pleasant neighbourhood is really growing. It’s a different vibe, a different feeling than other (Vancouver) neighbourhoods, but it has its own flavour.” Visit www.liveonque.com for more information.
