We also have a large group of real estate representatives prepared to contribute additional human resources, as well as our donations, to help Hospice with their fundraising events.” In 2010 Oceanside Hospice Society celebrated its twentieth anniversary as a community based charity. The charity has been serving the communities stretching from Nanoose to Deep Bay, with funding from grants, events and donations from many segments of the community. With only a small part time staff, the Society is able to deliver programs to the ailing, grieving and those facing end of life issues through the services of a large, skilled and committed volunteer work force. “Volunteers are at the heart of our organization’s effectiveness”, says Wood. “We are overjoyed that Coast Realty Group in Parksville and Qualicum Beach has offered to provide very tangible assistance in the form of public relations and donations. We are also very excited to work with their wonderful team, whose members offer considerable knowledge of our community in addition to their positive energy and good will.” In BC, End of Life Care is recognized as an essential part of the health care system. The primary objective is to enhance the quality of the individual’s remaining life and to ensure that they and their families experience as satisfying an end to life as is possible. No one, except by choice, should have to die alone or feel that they are alone with their grief and the burdens of caregiving. It is a goal of service providers, such as Hospice, that individuals receiving service should be free from avoidable distress and their families are actively supported. Oceanside Hospice Society’s mission is to offer compassionate supportive care to individuals and families who are facing advanced illness, death and bereavement. When you work with a REALTOR® you can expect strict adherence to provincial law, as well as to a national Code of Ethics -- ensuring you’ll receive the highest level of service and integrity.

‘Open Houses’ are also a good way to meet REALTORS, especially if you’re interested in purchasing a home. You can also refer to real estate signs in your chosen area. If no name appears, call the phone number on the sign and ask to be referred to a REALTOR® in that firm. Some people mistakenly contact the real estate board for referral to a REALTOR®. A real estate board does not provide a referral service for REALTORS. The Board was created to provide services to its members. Still, the Board will confirm whether a real estate practitioner is a member, and therefore a REALTOR®. THE INTERVIEW When choosing a real estate professional, it’s a good idea to talk to two or three sales representatives from different companies to determine what types of information and experience they and their companies have to offer. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you’re selling your home, ask those you interview about the type of marketing plan they have in mind for your home. Obviously, you’ll want to learn of their reputation and reliability. You may also want to consider asking for references from buyers or sellers with whom the REALTOR® has worked.

Real estate professionals know their markets inside-out because they inspect open houses and research all listings. As a result, they have expertise in assessing what comparable homes are selling for within any given neighbourhood.

Further, since you’ll be working closely with a REALTOR® for weeks or possibly months, it’s a good idea to choose someone who listens to what you say, asks intelligent questions and shows a genuine interest in helping you.

HOW DO I FIND A REALTOR®?

PREPARATORY WORK

There are many ways to go about finding the REALTOR® who’s right for you. First, try consulting friends, relatives and neighbours to see if they can recommend someone. You may also want to try searching through local newspaper real estate advertisements.

Keep in mind that REALTORS cannot work independently of your input. You must be willing to do some preparatory work yourself and be prepared to dedicate a certain amount of time to working with the REALTOR® you have chosen.

In fact, buyers who deal with several REALTORS may miss out on the high level of interest and comprehensive service one is entitled to expect by working closely with a single, competent REALTOR®. COOPERATION REALLY WORKS Remember, although you’ll be working with one REALTOR®, members of the Board cooperate extensively with each other to facilitate showings and sales for the benefit of other clients and customers. So, if you see a ‘For Sale’ sign on a house in which you’re interested, simply ask the REALTOR® you’re working with to arrange an appointment to view the home. This service is, in fact, what the Multiple Listing Service® system is all about -REALTORS cooperating with REALTORS to bring buyers and sellers together to achieve their mutual goals.
