An eco-friendly patio The role of patios has changed a lot over the years. These days, patios are laid out in such a way that they’re almost an extension of the house; perfect for get-togethers and relaxation. Feel like renovating? Here are a few ideas! Wood is still the preferred material for this type of project. However, it must be realized that the treating of wood is imperative in order to ensure its durability. If this isn’t done it will rapidly succumb to insects and mould. But not all treatments are created equal in terms of effectiveness and respect for the environment.

However, this treatment must be carried out by the individual consumer, rather than in a plant, and requires a great deal of patience and meticulous care to apply. Another, more recent innovation comes from France. It consists of heating the wood to a high temperature in a special oven, without the addition of any chemical products. In this way, all moisture is removed from the wood, preventing it from rotting or warping.

The chemicals most commonly used in these products are copper and ammonia which are corrosive in nature. Their application requires the use of nails and screws made of stainless steel. Experts believe that treatments involving copper-nitrogen based products are less effective but are also less expensive. As far as more eco-friendly treatments are concerned, two little-known products are worth considering. The first was developed in the Scandinavian countries. It consists of a powder made from plants and minerals, free of any toxic products.

Among the many wood species, red cedar from British Columbia is famous for its durability and its beautiful finish.

Plenty of grants for home energy retrofits For some time now, the EcoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program has been helping owners to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. In March 2009, the Federal Minister of Natural Resources, Lisa Raitt, announced a 25% increase in the amount of grants given in accordance with this program. The broadening of the EcoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program includes an increase in financing of $300 million over two years, which should allow 200,000 more owners to participate in this program. What’s more, small, mixed-use buildings designated as both commercial and residential, are now admissible under certain conditions. This type of building cannot have more than three floors, the ground surface must not exceed 600 square metres and at least 50% of the floor space must serve as a residence. Eligible retrofits for these buildings exclude specialized commercial equipment. Any retrofits will have to be done quickly as access to this program is based on the principal of first come, first served and grants are subject to the availability of funds. What’s more the date limit for applying for such a grant is either March 31, 2011 or 18 months after receiving the pre-retrofit energy efficiency assessment report. The maximum grant is $5,000 and the energy efficiency assessment must be carried out by an energy advisor certified by Natural Resources Canada.

The perfect staircase... The installation or the renovation of an interior staircase involves many decisions concerning the style of the staircase as well as the materials to be used. These choices must take into account the style of the house, aesthetics, budget, sturdiness, durability, ease of maintenance, personal taste as well as the latest trends of course. Because of its hardness and durability, oak is a popular choice for high-traffic areas. Maple, ash and cherry are also

appreciated but any of the hardwood species can be used for staircases. A part from wood, there are many other materials which are increasingly used in the manufacture of staircases. Metals, such as steel, wrought iron, brass and stainless steel have been popular choices for some time. It is transparent materials, however, which are currently at the top of the popularity ratings. The trend in modern houses has resolutely turned towards minimalism and transparency. This style lends staircases a light and airy effect. There are many different ways of conferring this lightness to a staircase but the use of raw steel for the banisters and stair frame can only add to the minimalist look. Other materials used to create this look, such as glass, tempered glass, acrylic, and Plexiglas promote transparency and increase the feeling of spaciousness by allowing as much light as possible to filter into the area. Clear, frosted or coloured, these transparent stairs blend into any decor, whether classic or contemporary. As well as using different materials, a flight of stairs can be lightened by eliminating the risers or limiting the balusters and handrails to a minimum.

Open stairs, a single handrail and the use of metal help to lighten the look of this elegant staircase.

What about repainting the outside of the house? The colour of a home’s exterior walls is, without doubt, its most important aesthetic element; the first thing which catches the eye. Repainting the outside of an entire house is certainly a very big project indeed! However, the final result usually makes up for all the hard work. Here are a few things which are good to know before getting started. The first step consists of preparing the surface for the application of the new paint. This part of the work is crucial as the quality of the final result depends on it. A pressure washer can be used to remove all the dirt. After this, a sander can do most of the work of removing the old covering as well as smoothing the surface. For those small areas which are difficult to reach, a scraper with a steel blade is a useful tool to have around. Bear in mind that softening the paint with a dual heat gun will make it much easier to remove. After this work is completed, the next step is the application of the primer. This will help seal the wood to some extent, giving the new paint better adherence. One important piece of advice: always purchase the same make of primer and finishing paint as this is your best guarantee that the two products will be compatible. It isn’t always easy to choose colour combinations for the finishing coat. First of all choose the basic colour. For best results, this should contrast with the colour of the roof. Then a different colour can be applied to the various trims (roof trim, cornices, window frames, etc). Finally, accents or contrasts are used to highlight such things as the front door. Good quality paint will not only cover a larger area than a cheaper brand but will also be easier to apply.

Windows which project outward from a room, bring elegance, distinction and an impression of size, as well as adding width to the viewing angle. This type of window can be subdivided into two categories. Bay windows are comprised of three sections; the one in the centre is often panoramic and cannot be opened. Bow windows have four or five sections.

Wrought iron has been used for over 1,400 years as decorative or integral elements of architecture, giving an artistic touch to buildings all over the world. If your home inspires a certain admiration due to its wrought iron decorations, even when they’re rusty or showing signs of aging, you should know that there are ways of stopping the oxidation and protecting the ironwork against the elements. On the outside of a house, wrought iron is often used for wall lamps, fences, weather vanes, door grills and trellises. The most popular ornamental shapes are spirals, flowers and arabesques... which certainly don’t help in the restoration work! Never mind! There are some simple ways of restoring pieces, even those embellished with complicated patterns, and obtaining good results at a reasonable cost. A successful restoration, including protecting the wrought iron, does not necessarily mean having to strip off the old layers of paint. But when the oxidation process has started, the rust must first be removed with a stripping product and a thorough sanding. The best method of sanding is to use a sand blaster which can be directed at specific areas and will remove both the old finish as well as any rust.

If you are thinking about having a bay or bow window in your new house, find out about the dimensions of standard models in order to simplify installation. If you would like to replace an existing window with either of these window types, manufacturers can produce a customized model adapted to a precise opening. Be sure to choose a frame and style which blends in with the other windows in your house. Decide which type of opening appeals to you: fixed, sliding, double-hung, casement, or awning. Bay and bow windows can be framed in wood, aluminum, vinyl or wood covered in aluminum. Certain materials offer a wider choice of colours than others. For a finishing touch, you can add decorative grills, rosettes, frames, shutters and sills. Check the thermal and acoustic performance of the windows you plan on purchasing. It is important that all the joints in your bay or bow windows be insulated against the cold in order to reduce heat loss and increase energy efficiency. Used mostly in new homes, complete bay window units include the woodwork, frame and trim. They are quickly installed and offer good protection from air and water infiltrations.

Once the metal is stripped bare, you will be able to appreciate the quality of the workmanship but you will also be able to see any defects. Sometimes a blacksmith will have to be called on in order to correct any problems or restore the object to its original appearance. After this an anti-corrosion coating should be applied followed by two coats of linseed oil or wood oil paint. You could also apply some particles of gold or silver to give a richer appearance to the object.

An expert can analyse wrought iron for chemical or metallurgic deterioration before restoration work begins. The bay window adds style to any home.

If wood inspires you... Changing a floor is not something to be done lightly. Major decisions have to be made as to the type of flooring best suited to the room, taking into account its durability and upkeep, your lifestyle, if children or animals are present… Sometimes, the existing floor covering has to be removed. What’s more, some coverings require professional installation. If the classic look and warmth of hardwood flooring appeal to you, take the time to choose the type of wood which you will be happy with for years to come. In fact, depending on the species and how many times it’s sanded, your new wood floor could last for 100 to 120 years! To determine the quality of the wood you are considering for your new floor, the manufacturing process, the grade of the species and the finish all have to be taken into account. In general, you will have the choice between a clear, uniform wood, a darker wood with a more pronounced texture and a rustic type of wood with knots. There are several different species available on the market, including oak, maple, cherry and ash as well as some exotic species. The thickness of the wood can vary from 1.3 to

2 cm. Depending on your budget, one good choice is a pre-varnished floor with a thickness of 2 cm. However, opting for a model 1.5 cm thick will be less expensive and is also a good alternative. As hardwood flooring does not wear evenly, you will probably have to use products or renovating techniques to restore its lustre. So, when choosing a varnish, be sure it is resistant to wear and tear but, more importantly, that it can be repaired easily and at a reasonable cost.

An outdoor solar shower... why not? Rinsing off after a dip in the pool feels so good! And now it’s something we can do in the fresh air using a source of energy which doesn’t harm the planet! That’s right, an outdoor solar shower is an eco-friendly addition to any backyard! Taking a refreshing shower outside is one of the pleasures of summer, much like a dip in a pool; one which you and your friends can profit from all summer long. What’s more, by installing such a device, the water in your pool will stay cleaner. With a flow of five to six litres per minute, a shower heated by the planet’s largest water heater, the sun, has such a good performance rate that it can provide water at a temperature of up to 50 °C. To do this, the cold water from your garden hose is heated in a 20litre tank. Up to five showers can be taken before it has to be filled and, depending on the intensity of the sun, a hot shower can be enjoyed after only 30 minutes. Modern and minimalist, this shower is very easy to install. All that needs to be done is to anchor it to the ground, connect it to a hose pipe and install the foot-rinse and drainage grill which prevents used water stagnating. If you like working with your hands you could also build a partition around the shower for more privacy and to add a finishing touch to the arrangements. You could build this partition in regular wood but it would be preferable to use treated wood, which is water-resistant.
