How to transform long, boring hallways A long, dark hallway leading to some bedrooms and a bathroom… many homes have them. They are a vestige from the 1960’s and 70’s and, in the decades since, have been a real headache to redecorate. Here are a few tips to help you reduce that long, boring look. Transforming a corridor into an interesting and agreeable part of the home is not particularly difficult. By learning some simple principles of interior design you can discover how to manipulate the space to add volume in this high-traffic area. To diminish the effect of length, architectural elements can be added such as shelves or narrow tables on which dried flower arrangements or photographs can be positioned. If you have enough space you could even add bookshelves. Another option is to give your hallway a picture gallery look by

arranging family photographs, paintings or murals on the walls. Paint one of the end walls a dark colour or use warm colours such as reds or oranges, for example. Use wallpaper, also on an end wall, with a bold or large scale design, or use wallpaper with wide horizontal stripes. Lighting is also an important element in creating the desired effect. Add lamps at short distances along the hallway to give a soft, yellow lighting. For a more dramatic effect create a low shelf, near the base of the wall, on which lights can be positioned projecting upwards to cut the space, creating intense pools of light right along the passageway. A chair, placed at an angle between the first two doors could be the finishing touch and add even more character to what was once a boring hallway.

Refurbish your bathroom The bathroom is dedicated to your comfort and well-being and deserves a lot of thought when it comes time to renovate. But this doesn’t necessarily involve major changes. As the latest trend is towards a rustic style, characterized by its classic lines, it is advisable to concentrate on the main elements of the bathroom: the bath and the tiling. Bathroom decorations are still very classic and the traditional materials continue to be enamel, tiles and wood. So if your bathroom is looking shabby, why not give it a facelift. For the tiling, you can start by removing all the rusting or cracked cement between the tiles. But before installing new cement, liven up the decor by creating a frieze.

Draw waves above the tiles and break an assortment of ceramic tiles into smallish pieces. Select the most attractive ones as well as some pebbles and shells. Apply a thin layer of cement and arrange these decorative elements according to your drawing. Fill in all the joints with cement and your bathroom will look almost new. Almost new, because there’s only the bath left to be refurbished now. This can be accomplished by renewing the enamel with polyurethane paint. Under the right conditions, this paint should last a good ten years and your bathtub will look like new. The cost of having the enamel redone varies from $200 to $300 and the work should be guaranteed for five years.

One of this fall’s hottest trends is without doubt the combination of black and white. Of course, one of our first lessons at school was that neither one nor the other is a colour. Despite this, combinations of black and white create spectacular harmonies. But moderation is the name of the game. This latest trend always involves graphic patterns. Curves, circles, straight lines... Even the smallest black and white print has geometric shapes. This being said, they should always be used sparingly so as not to transform the decor into a 1930’s kaleidoscope. For example, even though wallpapers with graphic designs are all the rage, they should only be used on one section of wall. As far as materials are concerned, there are no restrictions - no material is favoured over another when it comes to black and white decors. However, it is true that the cool effect of this type of decor can be relieved by adding life in the form of natural materials such as wood or stone. Add leather cushions and glass vases, mixing them with other, monochrome accessories. A beautiful combination consists of black suede cushions on white upholstery, a white lamp on a piece of black, crocodiletextured furniture, a zebra-striped rug, and mirrors and chandelier adorned with glass beads to light up the room. For those who would like to add some nuance to this trend, black and white can be combined with a palette of greys: anthracite grey, pearl grey, metallic grey and lunar grey. A work of art can be the focal point of any room if it is hung in the right setting. The perfect positioning of a painting can transform a room into a place of beauty. Here are the three golden rules to unite art with decoration. POSITIONING In the past, artwork was always supposed to be centered on the wall at eyelevel but this is certainly not the case these days. Sometimes, it can be interesting to distort the perspective. For example, in a decor which is overly harmonious, a piece of art can be placed off-centre, on a low piece of furniture such as a footstool, in order to change the perspective and to distract the eye from the overly structured aspect of the room. However, one rule still remains for positioning paintings: large pieces of artwork need lots of space. The bigger the painting, the more room it needs so that it can be admired at a distance. A large painting cannot be properly displayed if it shares the wall with other works. LIGHTING Always choose lights that have been designed to illuminate artwork. Adjustable spotlights are useful for contemporary works. For more classic paintings, incandescent picture lights which give a softer, slightly yellow light can be very effective. MOVE THEM ABOUT Renew your pleasure over and over again by moving artwork from one room to another. Colour blocking... add some punch to your decor! The world of home decorating evolves and changes very quickly. Just like in the fashion industry, trends alter rapidly, fading away after a few years or even just a few months. Colours are particularly subject to these changes in popularity. But what can you do if the latest fashion shades make you feel a little overwhelmed? Perhaps you’re hesitating to repaint a wall or a whole room with a blue that’s a little too bright or a yellow which is a bit too sunny? Perhaps your solution lies in another trend which is becoming more and more popular at the moment, colour blocking. Colour blocking is a technique which uses colours in the form of geometric blocks of different shapes and sizes to highlight decorative elements or to define different areas in a room or part of a house. Even if the colours are very vibrant, using them in small areas won’t be too overwhelming. What’s more, as this technique uses paint almost exclusively and only in small quantities, colour blocking is an affordable way of decorating. For example, a paler or darker square or rectangle could be painted on a wall to highlight a painting or an object; an imaginary bed headboard could be created with a zone of a different colour; or inversely, less appealing architectural elements can be camouflaged by painting them the same colour as the rest of the wall. The use of certain colours can emphasize a particular piece of furniture, while painting the base of the wall a different colour creates a horizontal movement. Different shapes and colours can even be arranged to transform the wall itself into a decorative element which has no need of photographs or works of art. All it needs is the imagination of the person holding the paint brush! If the possibilities which colour blocking offers are limitless, home decorating specialists recommend that certain basic rules be followed. For example, particular care should be taken as far as harmonizing the colours while, at the same time, avoiding overloading the wall or walls with too many different colours. Generally speaking, it is recommended to use a maximum of three colours, either different shades of the same colour or completely different colours. Also, the shade used to create a point of interest should be the most eye-catching of the colours used. Of course, the quality of the work is also very important. The different sections must not only be perfectly defined, but the edges have to be absolutely flawless. For that reason, the use of painting accessories is recommended, including templates and masking tape specially designed for painting jobs. All in all, colour blocking can turn out to be a truly original way of livening up your interior decor without having to spend a fortune. Decorate with plants Plants used to decorate a home are never limited to the garden or the deck and certainly not to the summer months. Inside the home, all year round, plants are decorative elements of prime importance. After all, what could be better than nature to give that finishing touch to your home’s decor! Decorating with house plants can make us all aware of the power of Mother Nature. For example, plants such as ivies and chlorophytum (spider plants) absorb carbon monoxide and purify the air thus diminishing the inconveniences of second hand smoke. Plants, as well as being attractive to look at, can also solve several small problems in the home. To hide wiring, for example, there’s nothing better than a medium height arrangement made up of a plant with decorative foliage interspersed with reeds and bamboo. Hanging

plants can be used to play with perspective and can increase the perception of depth in a room.

Plants are perfect in a modern decor especially with the latest trend towards bamboo, palm trees, ficus trees and yucca.

So it’s very easy to add colour and cheerfulness to a home with a few, strategically positioned exotic plants. That is, if you have a green thumb! If not, welcome some artificial plants into your home. Even though these plants used to be viewed negatively, some are now made of Teflon, which gives them a more natural appearance and more flexible foliage. However, innovation and quality have an influence on the price. This type of artificial plant is a lot more expensive than a natural house plant. But in the end, it can prove to be a lot less expensive if the care of a natural plant is taken into account.

Gilding: follow the trend! If the price of gold on the financial markets is dependent on the value of the dollar, fluctuations in taste when it comes to gilding depend largely on the latest whim of our interior designers. And at the moment, the luxury of gilt is back. Recreating the brightness of the sun and the lustre of gold, gilding is as chic as it is glamorous; it is taking over our homes and promises to be one of the hottest trends for 2010. And even though the German designer, Philipp Plein, introduced a dazzling, all gold luxury furniture collection in 2008, the trend is more towards moderation and limiting ourselves to just a few touches in the home: a light fixture, plates, table feet, cushions... of light, sparkles; touches of gilt create splendour in small doses. In the bathroom, a gilded mosaic to cover the walls completely or partially. A few tiles lining the edges of the bathtub give an impression of Roman opulence. In the living room and dining room gold is used for accessories. It livens up dark colours, from black to charcoal grey. Gilded metal is also the trend on light fixtures, blending beautifully with antique chandeliers. Another way of giving lustre to your home is to cover an entire wall with gold wallpaper or to decorate it with gold leaf. For a beautiful staircase... A staircase is an important and often beautiful architectural element and should always blend in with the rest of the house in both style and colour scheme. With this in mind, it can be a difficult place to decorate effectively. Yet there are numerous ways of highlighting this central component of a house, which is often the first thing people see when they walk through your front door. However, there are three basic rules which should be followed: simplicity, lighting and a hint of colour. Simplicity Keep your staircase simple! It’s much better to restrain yourself to a few decorative elements placed at regular intervals up the stairs. Plants positioned between the balusters are a good idea but perhaps artificial plants would be preferable to natural ones due to the risk of water-stains. A wool stair runner is always quieter and more comfortable on

the feet. If the staircase has a landing in the middle, create a point of interest; the rounded curves of a long-necked African vase will generate great visual impact.

To highlight a staircase, decorate it simply and avoid using contrasting elements.

Lighting The staircase is visible during the day but often disappears when night falls. To emphasize its beauty during the evening, subtle garlands of light can be used to decorate the stair rail and create an intimate atmosphere. Candles could also be used on every other step or choose wall lights. This type of lighting creates a dramatic effect when installed at the base of the wall, all the way up the stairs. A hint of colour Whether the stairs are in wood, metal, stone or concrete, the colour of the walls must be in perfect harmony with the rest of the house. Neutral shades are ideal for creating a feeling of equilibrium.
