Rhubarb time is coming IN THE GARDEN Brian Minter

T

he cultivation of rhubarb dates back to about 2700 BC in China, where it was grown for its medicinal purgative qualities. Native to the Bosphorus, a windy strait that separates Europe and Asia, rhubarb has a long and interesting history of treating many aliments and was held in high regard through several Chinese dynasties. For many centuries, Chinese emperors forbade its introduction into Russia and Europe. It’s quite funny that rhubarb wasn’t popular in Britain until sugar became affordable in the 17th century. After that, rhubarb was so popular in the British Isles that it was comparable to the popularity of apple pie in the U.S. In our part of the world, rhubarb has jumped from an old-fashioned garden novelty to the forefront of the culinary world. It combines so well with berries, stone fruits and apples in pies and adds a delicious tang to sauces, preserves, muffins, chutneys and even cold soups. A cool-loving perennial vegetable, growing easily from rather large fleshy rhizomes, rhubarb (Rheum x hybridium) is hardy to zone 2 but in warmer zone 10 climates, it is treated like an annual. Rhubarb stalks can be harvested over an eight- to 10-week period each spring and then the plant should be allowed to recover and re-grow over the summer and fall months. Rhubarb leaves are poisonous, so do not use them. This is one of the most ideal times of the year to plant rhubarb but look for the largest roots you can find with two or more eyes. They

are available now as bare root clumps as well as freshly potted roots. It’s important to get them planted as soon as possible because they need two years of growing time to become established enough to begin harvesting. Rhubarb plants love a rich, well-drained soil. If you have established clumps, they are probably already showing growth in spite of the cold weather and mulching existing stalks with well rotted manures gets them off to a great start. You can speed up your harvesting time by covering them with a deep clay pot flipped upside down. This technique is big in Europe and so easy to do. For the first few seasons, harvest only for four to five weeks to make sure the young plants are not too stressed. When you harvest rhubarb, make sure you pull out the stalk by grabbing the base of the stalk and tugging sideways and outward. If the stalk does not come cleanly out of the root, be sure to pull off the stumpy end left attached to the root in order to prevent decay. The importance of removing the whole stalk is why rhubarb should never be harvested with a knife. To keep rhubarb healthy and growing, never remove all its leaves and stop harvesting when smaller stalks appear in late spring / early summer. When flowers appear in late spring, cut them out and feed the clump well to get it back into a vegetative state. In our region, not all varieties are available but ‘Victoria’ with its greenish red stalks, ‘Crimson Cherry’ with its rich red stalks and ‘Strawberry’ with its smaller red stalks do great in our area. Rhubarb will perform okay in containers but for long term enjoyment, it does far better when planted in the ground. Rhubarb takes so little space and can add so much flavour to so many dishes, it’s well worth the time to pop in a few plants.

GVHBA’S 17TH ANNUAL

A winner has been crowned in Morgan Crossing's B.C.'s Best Young Designer competition. Judges chose Vancouver's Daniel Meloche from a group of six finalists who competed for the title and grand prize by designing a suite at South Surrey's Morgan Crossing village. Meloche, a graduate from the Art Institute of Vancouver, is currently an interior designer and project co-ordinator for Northland Properties. "I am overwhelmed and thankful for the honour of being named B.C.'s Best Young Designer," Meloche says. "The competition was not only a great test of skill, but also a test of strategy in orchestrating my design vision on budget and on time." Kari Henshaw, one of the contest judges and a principal at Insight Design Group, notes the judges were looking for the designer that captured their target market while remaining true to his or her individual design aesthetic. "It's a tough balance to achieve, and Daniel accomplished it with thoughtfulness, cleverness and a well-executed design," she says. In his suite, Meloche favoured a clean, contemporary design style with striking pops of colour and strong lighting elements. As his prize, Meloche will choose either an all-expenses-paid trip to New York to attend the renowned Architectural Digest Home Design Show or the cash equivalent. Meloche says the effort was worth it. "There was nothing more rewarding than the final result, and the reaction of people who came through my suite." The public chose a different winner: Burnaby's Joanna Kado won the Fan Favourite category with her

suite, which featured warm colours, urban influences and layers of textures. Kado will receive a $2,000 prize. The public can still view the furnished design suites every Saturday and Sunday until March 20; Meloche will be on-site each weekend from noon to 3 p.m. to offer general design advice to people who tour the suites. All of the finalists' suites are now available for sale and, until March 20, new purchasers of Morgan Crossing homes are eligible for a complimentary twohour design consultation with Meloche or Kado. Mark your calendar for GVHBA seminar

Never too late to be a ďŹ rst-timer Buying your first fi home can be a daunting process. There are several diverse factors to take into Th consideration when making such a significant fi purchase, especially in Metro Vancouver, where the housing market is like no other. Local fi first-time homebuyers likely have several questions before purchasing their first fi dwelling, including queries about location, what style of home best matches needs and financial resources, what mortgage options are fi available, legal and tax considerations, how the homebuying tax credit works and what's involved with condo pre-sales. These questions and others will be answered Th by a panel of experts at the Greater Vancouver Home Builders' Association's 17th annual First-Time Home Buyers Seminar March 22. "Our experts will help first-time fi buyers investigate all available options and key issues before they take that critical first fi step onto the property ladder," says GVHBA president and CEO Peter Simpson. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation senior market analyst Robyn Adamache is among the many notable speakers who will be at the event, all of whom will address common concerns faced by first-time homebuyers, from finances to home warranties. fi "Real estate continues to be a hot topic in

More than 700 ďŹ rst-time Metro Vancouver homebuyers attended the Greater Vancouver Home Builders' Association seminar for ďŹ rst-time purchasers last year.

this region, so the attendance is expected to be as many or greater than the 750 young people who attended the seminar last year," Simpson says. "Doors open at 6 p.m., allowing attendees ample time to view builder displays and other home-related products and services."

The presenting sponsor of the seminar is the Th Homeowner Protection Offi ffice Branch of BC Housing; several other corporate sponsors are also supporting the event. The event happens at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel from 7-9 p.m.; the hotel

has waived parking fees for the event. All participants are asked to bring a food item for the Surrey Food Bank. Register online at www.gvhba.org or call 778-565-4288; registration will be accepted via voicemail during non-business hours.
