It is the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s signature fundraising event. The Run for the Cure is a volunteer-led event that relies on thousands of volunteers each year. In 2010, over 12,000 volunteers dedicated their time and energy in 60 communities across Canada to help make the Run for the Cure a success. The first Run for the Cure was organized by Andrea Thomas Hill in 1992. Hill’s grandmother died of breast cancer, and like many women, she had been uncomfortable talking about the disease. It took place in Toronto’s High Park, where 1,500 participants raised an amazing $85,000. Since then, more than 1,000,000 participants have participated in the Run for the Cure. In 2010, our support continued to grow stronger, with record-breaking dollars raised and unwavering corporate and volunteer support. In 60 communities, more than 170,000 supporters united as runners, walkers, donors, volunteers and partners, to raise $33 million in support of our vision of creating a future without breast cancer.
