Editors’ Letter Pigs, like pigeons, occupy a hallowed place in our little urban hearts, despite their usual homes being in the country. Perhaps we’re just nostalgically harking back to the days of farmland in Barcelona, but the appearance of javalís in Gràcia is as magical to us as snow in the winter. Or, perhaps we’re a population particularly given to allegory and metaphor: we see things both sick and reflective of ourselves whenever a pig appears. Whether working our molars over a bit of serrano or watching a cop beat the tar out of a protester, the swines are everywhere, and we are the swines.

Once in a while, it’s good to be reminded: there are parts of ourselves that can’t, or shouldn’t, be hidden by a pretty face and good marketing. Barna used to be a little depressing sometimes, but it was also open, and that’s what we should work to return. Bring us back to the old days when drinks and flats were cheap, defending against street piss was less important than defending culture, and the grit made us tough. You have to sift through a lot of shit to find gold, but it’s worth it if you eventually find something rich and strange. Moreover, even if sanitary conditions improve in the sty, there’s nothing wrong with cerdos rolling around in the dirt.

OK, enough of the stretched metaphors. We’re back to school this month and piglets are squealing around the corners, so we thought it relevant to introduce a fabulist element into the edition. That Aesop never goes out of style, and even children can retain complex moral concepts with the aid of a few animals and a deceptively light tone. Take it as a little extracurricular investigation, and get your nose into the filth.

by Sonia Fernández Pan Las definiciones nos seducen con sus elementales explicaciones, pero no siempre son capaces de descifrar todo el contenido que contienen la mayoría de palabras a las que se refieren. Los que crean que septiembre es un mes que se deriva de agosto y que precede a octubre no andan descaminados en semejante perogrullada. Pero más allá de dicha conjetura evidente, septiembre es mucho más que una de las doce partes en las que se dividen un año y sus irregulares trescientos sesenta y cinco días. Septiembre no es solamente un mes: es un manifiesto.

Si agosto es un domingo que dura treinta y un días, septiembre es un lunes de una duración más o menos parecida. Treinta días para un síndrome postvacacional que no se deduce de nuestro descenso a los infiernos laborales, sino que más bien procede del limbo involuntario en el que rebotan sin existir todos esos proyectos con los que nos comprometemos a medias. Si el futuro ya

está aquí y el presente se fue sin despedirse siquiera, septiembre es ese hoy que postergamos a un mañana cargado con la retórica de la pereza, ese pecado capital que nace del hastío de vivir en perpetua desgana. Da pereza la pereza, pero más pereza da septiembre.

Septiembre impone una preceptiva renuncia a los falibles remedios antimosquitos, al sudor pegamentoso y sus fragantes manchas de expresión en nuestra camisetas de caduca temporada, a los silencios circunspectos durante la contienda por la mesa de una terraza alrededor de un bar cualquiera, a las rubias adjudicadas dentro de las alterables categorías del estructuralismo guiri con una botella de lambrusco made in Spain dentro de los vagones del metro, a los aparcamientos de toallas sobre la arena de la Barceloneta entre cangrejos anglosajones y dípteros heteros italianos, a los hipsters advenedizos que convierten el Carrefour

Express de Las Ramblas en el último garito de moda gracias a las recicladas tendencias del cortejo cimentado en la erótica del supermercado, a los estampados vestiditos que alguna joven diseñadora trajeada de becaria tuvo la oportunidad de adjudicar al imperio Inditex para uso y disfrute de la urbana pasarela estival, a las tropas de ocupados veraneantes y ociosos autóctonos degustando con presteza la veterana bebida cubana, el mojito, desde hace pocos años requisada por la marca Visc-a BCN. Pero ya es Septiembre y, con la vuelta al cole, toca inventarse masters y posgrados a los que asistir durante el año lectivo para seguir disfrutando de las perennes consecuencias de la coyuntura mediterránea en ciudades como Barcelona, donde el verano convive con el otoño gracias a la criogenización del turismo.

En agosto La Vanguardia llegó a colocar en portada la historia de Xavi y Olivia. Tras haber visto el anuncio de los tíos buenos puritanos del anuncio de Estrella-Damm estos muchachos fueron a Menorca. Allí se conocieron en la playa. A los pocos días, Xavi escribió una carta a La Vanguardia preguntando por Olivia, arrepentido por no haberle pedido el móvil. Ella la leyó y días después se reunieron en Barcelona ante la atenta mirada de los fotógrafos de dicho diario. La virilidad está en alarmante crisis, de Popeye el Marino con sus espinacas y su pipa, Olivia ha pasado a un chavalín que ni se atrevió a pedirle el teléfono en la playa menorquina.

El Sant Pau, el Clínic y el Vall d‘Hebron ofrecerán “menús degustación” elaborados por los prestigiosos cocineros Ada Parellada, Fabián Martín y Fermí Puig para reponerse de la extracción. En la primera jornada, en el Sant Pau, se triplicó el número de donantes.

La Guardia Urbana sigue guardando la ciudad En esta ocasión, a partir de septiembre del 2010, comenzaran las multas a las motos que no estén aparcadas en aparcamientos de motos. Teniendo en cuenta que BCN es la ciudad mundial con mayor densidad de motos y que es un hecho habitual en las calles de Barcelona que los motoristas improvisen sus estacionamientos, esta medida puede ser un auténtico drama, si además tenemos en cuenta que con el bicing, el Ayuntamiento se cargó muchas plazas de motos. Algunos especulan con que se trata de una estrategia a medio plazo para colar una zona verde o azul para las motos.

Esta medida se apoya en el resentimiento de muchos transeúntes y conductores de coche hacia los motoristas.

La Mercè 2010, más barata y con más espacios Visto desde el punto de vista de este humilde popero, Belle and Sebastian y Goldfrapp serán los grupos estelares extranjeros y por parte de los españoles, tendremos a los enérgicos Surfing Sirles y Mujeres. No obstante, no tengo muy claro que esta medida beneficie al club, porque ya se sabe que para cerrar un negocio en nuestro ambiente mediterráneo es preciso “seducir” al enemigo con alguna pecata minuta. Algún día hablaremos del sistema “ético” de renovar el carnet de socio del Barça –que Rosell no modifica–, y nos cerrarán la revista.

Raúl Muniente Sariñena es un hombre de reconocido prestigio ético mientras que Iosif Stalin pese a ser un héroe ético carece de prestigio ético.

y el jabalí

by Simón Lorenzo Ortiz El otro día me habló el ratón lleno de hollín que vive en las vías de plaza España.

Siempre que me ve grita: “¡Oso, oso!” Y yo le sonrío deseando no tenerme que parar tres puñeteras horas. Al ratón que vive entre las vías de plaza España le gusta demasiado su propia voz. Ese día el ratón estaba especialmente charlatán, saltando de un tema a otro: que si la juventud de hoy en día, que si el mejor queso era jenesepa, que si el mundo se estaba volviendo loco, que si las mejores playas se encontraban al norte de Mataró. Y así saltó de uno a otro hasta llegar a uno de sus favoritos.

Cuando vi que lo rodeaba, justo antes de asaltarlo, empalidecí. ¿Por qué no me despedí? Podría haber inventado cualquier excusa. O haberlo hecho desaparecer de un zarpazo. Pero no se puede, no con el ratón que vive entre las vías del metro allá en plaza España. Te atrapa, desmontando todo plan de huida, y lo hace sin querer.

Eso es lo peor, tampoco se le puede culpar, eres libre de estar ahí.

Me contó una broma que había oído hacía años, no la contó así, pero así la imaginé yo.

Dos zorros, padre e hijo, habían montado en un pueblo de mar un pequeño puesto con cosas típicas del país. Esto ocurría, para que os hagáis una idea, al mismo tiempo que nacía del mito erótico de las morsas suecas o aquel invento que rogaba Spain is different. Era una época en la que aún no había Wacdonalds, las playas eran de piedrecillas y sólo se podía hablar una lengua. Como empezaba a llegar toda aquella masa de carteras repletas de lechugas, todos los animales se arremolinaban buscando sacar el mayor beneficio. Aquellos pobres zorros hicieron lo mismo, compraron la figura de un lince legionario, de un toro vestido de humanero

–con su traje de luces y todo– y ceniceros, mecheros y camisetas de muy mala calidad. Lo pusieron todo sobre un tablón que a su vez descansaba sobre dos caballetes y se tumbaron al sol.

No tardó en llegar el primer Hemingway de pacotilla, uno de aquellos jabalís que venían a España para desaparecer de la modernidad, a comer migas o gachas y beber vino en las tabernas mineras. Jabalís que caminaban todo el día, en sus botas negras, bajo su sucio sombrero, con sus bigotes de alambre y su piel y su pelo curtidos al sol de muchos caminos. Aquel jabalí que venía a aprender, más viajero que turista.

Sucedió que el forastero se acercó con curiosidad al estante. Observó la cabra vestida de bailadora y el cenicero en el que aparecía gaviota y ancla. Y se decidió a preguntar: – Sprichst du Deutsch?

– ¿Disculpe?

– Sorry, do you speak English?

– No señó –contestó el zorro.

– Parlez-vous français?

– No, no lo hablo. –El pequeño zorro asistía a la conversación como el que asiste a un partido de tenis.

– Excusa, italiani?

– No, qué va.

El jabalí presupuso que no iba a llegar a buen puerto con esos dos zorros, así que con cortesía se alejó. El padre zorro resopló al recuperar su postura distendida bajo el sol. Pero el hijo zorro seguía rígido observando cómo el robusto puerco se alejaba más y más hasta ocultarse tras una esquina.

– Vaya, papá, qué maravilloso debe ser eso de saber muchos idiomas.

– Buf –contestó–, para lo que le ha servido a éste.

Pude al final deshacerme del ratón sucio de hollín, coger el metro y bajarme en plaza Catalunya. Ya había anochecido. Yo iba rumiando la historia, sacándole sentidos ocultos. Me daba pena aquel jabalí. El tema al que yo tanto temía en boca del ratón que vive entre las vías del tren era precisamente ése, el turismo. Para él, era el peor mal de esta ciudad. Decía que por su culpa los precios estaban por las nubes, la ciudad sucia e intransitable y el mar caliente. Para el ratón el turismo tenía la culpa de que el Barça no ganara, que lloviera o que hubiera sequía. El ratón hiperactivo de entrevías era un poco xenófobo.

Observé a mi alrededor y vi a todos aquellos cerdos. Puerquitos rosados enrojecidos al sol que necesitaban una urgente capa de protector solar factor yeso. Ahí estaban, con las pezuñas metidas en sandalias –con o sin calcetines–, bajo sus sombreros mejicanos, completamente depilados, cocidos a sangrías y cervezas.

Cantaban cogidos aquella canción que empieza: “¡Oink oink!”.

Oteé aquellas tiendas de souvenirs, vacías de zorros, regentadas por serpientes y alimañas que cobraban increíbles cantidades de lechugas por figuras del Drac de Gaudí, castañuelas y guitarras de plástico.

Ceniceros, mecheros y camisetas de muy mala calidad. En la puerta un cartel en todos los idiomas posibles menos en el nuestro propio.

Por un momento imaginé estar en aquella Barcelona prenoventa y dos. Con su Maqui Navaja, su rumba minoritaria y la autenticidad que tanto gustaba. Soñé una ciudad vacía de cerdos, de vendedores ambulantes, de moqueta de flyers en las ramblas. Sin sombreros mejicanos, sin cientos de camisetas deportivas, sin la luz

de abierto veinticuatro horas, sin los sportbars. Sin cerdos con sombreros mejicanos.

Por un momento pensé que el ratón tenía razón. La ciudad había perdido parte de su esencia. Se había abierto al mundo, gritando fuerte, creando un resort animal para que los cerditos se encontraran como en su casa, emulando sus bares, copiando su música, despachando el alcohol que ellos beben. Nos hemos vendido, pensé. Justo después recordé aquellas morsas suecas y cómo, durante la dictadura del Pájaro Carpintero, ayudaron sin saberlo a la obertura mental y fronteriza.

Cómo se inmiscuyeron sus bikinis, junto con su manera de ver el mundo, en toda la sociedad que es esta gran granja que habito.

Me senté en un banco de las Ramblas, junto a un buen grupo de cerdos italianos.

Reían y gruñían como lo hacen todos los animales a la edad de merecer. Cortejaban a una bella garza catalana. Tanto insistir, uno de los cerdos se llevó una fabulosa y sonora bofetada. Cerca, al pie de uno de esos enormes árboles que custodian las Ramblas, dos lagartos comentaban la jugada, riéndose como críos. Uno dijo: “Estos italianos son igual que los argentinos, con lo cantarín de su idioma se acaban llevando a todas las hembras”. Lo decía indignado, casi.

“Bueno”, les dije entrando sin permiso en su conversación, “para lo que le ha servido a éste.”

Los cerdos de George Harrison y la sociedad catalana: una profecía

Mare de Déu, cridà el gos a la guineu un matí d’aquells on l’estiu desitja morir i la tardor jura amor de puta a la puntualitat britànica. Sonà el despertador, era tard i el president Montilla convocava eleccions. De cop i volta trucaren a la porta. Un home sense calçotets volia vendre’m calçots. Cridava i la força dels seus cops m’espantà. El silenci tornà fins que una nota lliscà veloç fins als meus peus. El remitent era l’associació catalana de pernils i atzavares. Em pregaven en nom de Madolf Jitla que llegís atentament el contingut del sobre. Vaig obrir-lo i el text parlà clar i castellà.

Querido Jean Martin, Es un motivo de Honda y Yamaha satisfacción escribirte para que difundas el hallazgo de una profecía esencial para la situación política de Cataluña antes de la inminente consulta electoral que elegirá al próximo presidente de la Generalitat. Corren malos tiempos, pero nosotros vivimos en el regocijo de haber derribado el mito de Nostradamus.

El verdadero oráculo de nuestra época es George Harrison, que en paz descanse, el único que con pocas palabras abarca toda la dimensión de nuestra inevitable tragedia.

En 1968 compuso “Piggies”, una canción con un tono muy de su estilo, con el guitarrista predicando como un dios enfurecido, siempre sentencioso y soberbio pese a su poco tiempo transcurrido en el planeta.

Vayamos al grano. Leyendo atentamente la letra hemos comprendido, como en Abbey Road sabían el destino del Principado y la sumisión de sus ciudadanos a la burguesía que nunca se cubre de mugre porque la propaga. Sus acciones siempre quedarán impolutas y Convergència ganará holgadamente porque nadie parece preocuparse de su burla corrupta, compartida, como bien sabe usted que ha sufrido en sus carnes cómo se recauda dinero a costa de bolsillos modestos, por la municipalidad socialista.

En fin Pilarín, resulta que George, el Beatle silencioso, lo plasmó para el mundo hace ya 42 primaveras. ¡Un hombre de Liverpool preocupado por la cita con las urnas de 2010! Fascinante. El tema empieza con una dulzura turbia que la música incrementa, con el bajo simulando gruñidos y tapeloops ciertamente cerdunos. El tono es de fábula barroca, nos van a contar un cuento,

y la referencia animal bebe de Orwell y su mítica Rebelión en la granja. La humanización de estos mamíferos introduce al oyente en una atmosfera donde las cosas no son como parecen. Have you seen the little piggies crawling in the dirt? And for all the little piggies life is getting worse, always having dirt to play around in. Los pequeños cerditos, nosotros, nos arrastramos por la mugre. No importa que todo vaya de mal en peor.

Los de las camisas almidonadas remueven la mugre y nunca se manchan porque su reino no es de este mundo. MARXEM DELS PIGS! Portugal-Italy-Greece

and Spain...

Era allò que en diuen un estat-nació (que ve a ser com un mateix poble amb el seu propi govern) i de mida mitjana, ni gran ni petit. Ah, i molt ben situat al sud del nord (que vol dir que eren els simpàtics d’entre els seriosos). I com que estaven tan ben ubicats geogràficament (que ve a ser allà on ets respecte dels altres) tothom hi volia passar (d’això en diuen ser un eix de comerç internacional).

Tenien un aeroport molt i molt important, el més important del sud d’Europa (que hem dit que eren els seriosos i rics). Però a més a més, tenien dos ports molt i molt importants, els de Barcelona i Tarragona, i vinga vaixells amunt i avall. Fins i tot van construir una via per un tren tan ràpid que es plantava a Paris en quatre hores! I els experts parlaven del pròsper Arc Mediterrani, i que aquell petit país (però no tan petit) era la gran porta d’Àsia a Europa (Àsia és un lloc molt gran i molt llunyà i amb molta gent que fa moltes coses). I mireu, es veu que la seva economia no parava de créixer i estaven molt contents. Els analistes (que són com els experts) ho havien definit com “El Miracle Català”, ja que la seva renda per càpita (o sigui, quants diners tens per a cada catalanet i catalaneta) s’havia situat en pocs anys a la tercera posició dels països de la Unió Europea (que és un lloc on tothom hi vol ser perquè té molts avantatges).

Però no us penseu que això havia estat sempre així, no. Precisament la Unió Europea, i poder-hi pertànyer o no, havia estat una qüestió decisiva uns anys enrere. I és que aquell petit país tan simpàtic i feliç havia hagut de passar antigues penúries.

M’explico. Abans de viure tot sol vivia a casa d’un altre país, i tot eren problemes.

Fins que un bon dia va decidir fer-se gran i anar-se’n de casa (d’això els entesos, que són com els experts i els analistes, en diuen fer la independència). Perquè resulta que aquell país més gran que es deia Espanya també vivia a la Unió Europea, però els de la Unió el van fer fora per no sé què de la caiguda de l’euro enfront del dòlar (que són monedes molt famoses) i la seva feble economia basada en el totxo (no, no sé què vol dir, fillets). Total, que els d’aquell petit i simpàtic país van pensar que s’hi estava prou bé a la Unió Europea i que si per seguir-hi sent calia marxar de casa i fer-se’n una de nova, doncs, cap problema. I dit i fet. Va anar tot tan ràpid que al cap de sis mesos les seleccions nacionals (que són els que fan esport) del nou estat ja van poder disputar els següents Jocs Olímpics d’una ciutat que es diu Londres, on hi viu molta i molta gent.

I avui aquest petit país (però no tant, escolta!) és el darrer estat creat a Europa, i també el darrer a entrar de ple dret a la Unió Europea. I ha vist com la seva llengua, el català, és oficial a tot arreu i s’ha

convertit de la nit al dia en la sisena llengua més parlada a la Unió. I encara més, el petit país (que al final resultarà que no ho és gens de petit, a veure si ens entenem), s’ha erigit en un model per a d’altres països que venen a conèixer els seus mètodes d’educació, de democràcia, de noves tecnologies i moltes coses més. I sabeu què?

Tothom coneix Barcelona com la seva capital. A les botigues de les Rambles (que ja sé que les coneixeu, punyeters) ara ja s’hi poden comprar barretines catalanes. Però també els antics barrets mexicans! En canvi, i això ningú no sap perquè, no hi ha manera de trobar les sevillanes (que serien unes figuretes engalanades que ballen).

Ai, i el Barça! El coneixeu, eh, murris?

Doncs ara juga a la Lliga Europea, que és com la NBA europea i de futbol. És que allò de guanyar any sí i any també la Lliga Espanyola feia molt de mal, i la mateixa Federació Espanyola (amb el Madrid al capdavant) el va expulsar, tu. I si n’era un gat, si n’era un gos, aquest conte ja s’ha fos.

He then offered me a ride, but I declined since I wanted to buy a few street beers at the top of the Ramblas.

Before I reached the Ramblas they drove up behind me and the side door slid open. I was being proffered two bags of beer they had confiscated. I got in and the cop I’d been talking to immediately had his tongue in my mouth and his hands up, down and inside my skirt. We continued that way until we were near my apartment. The complicity of his colleagues was amazing; they parked to wait for him as he walked me home. Inside the building he pushed me against the wall and rubbed me down. He wanted to come up and I said no, but you can have my number, and he wanted a blowjob right there and I said no, but you can have my number, and the next thing I knew he blew his load on the floor right next to the mailboxes. He cleaned it up with a tissue and took my number.

En la persecución crece el lodo que de pronto te atrapa, y te envuelve como una marea y te arrastra y te lleva consigo a sus entrañas a que des una vuelta mientras te asfixia y hagas unas fotos en la oscuridad sin grietas tupida, reseca, que se te pega a la piel, y que cuando te escupe, tú que añorabas el sol, es entrada la noche y la tormenta que arrecia no es agua, es sangre, es regla, viscosa, espesa, virulenta, y los relámpagos quieren saber de tus tobillos, adonde apuntan, y de tus ojos, que no puedes abrir, y de las caries que amarillean tus dientes ... y te acechan ... te zumban ... te estremecen, ... retumban el suelo por donde pisas.

Al nacer me concedieron 200 puntos. Me dijeron que era un privilegiado por saber que los tenía –no todo el mundo es consciente– y me aconsejaron que no los malgastara en tonterías. Consejo que desoí al pasarme la pubertad y parte de la adolescencia pegándome con mis hermanos y desobedeciendo a mis padres. Superé esas fases con apenas 90 puntos intactos y todavía me quedaba bastante vida por delante, así que decidí corregirme y empezar a ser amable con las personas que me rodeaban. Pero desengañémonos, la gente no cambia, y después de varios años siguiendo esa estrategia y viendo que mi crédito no aumentaba, me dejé llevar por toda clase de desenfrenos y licencias que no reproduciré aquí. No había llegado ni a la mitad de los cuarenta, cuando volvieron a ponerse en contacto conmigo para alertarme de los últimos 5 puntos que todavía conseguía retener. Si he de ser sincero, cuando me encontraron ya ni me acordaba de ellos.

Tenía, pues, dos opciones: reformarme – cosa que sé que no haría– o conseguir más puntos por algún método fraudulento. Apenas sopesé la primera cuando ya me encontraba vagando como un alma en pena por los pasillos del hospital de maternidad ante la extraña mirada de los allí presentes. Nada más poner a los recién nacidos detrás del cristal, aparecían a su lado dejando un sobre en cada cuna. Tan sólo tuve que hacerme con un par de ellos para mantenerme con vida, descubriendo, de paso, la manera de ser inmortal.

Según la ecografía sólo había uno. Nadie esperaba al segundo.

Recuperándose de la sorpresa estaban cuando el tercero asomó la cabeza. Comenzaron los nervios. No era posible que de aquel frágil cuerpecillo surgieran tres críos, y menos cuatro, cinco y seis como se fue comprobando. Para el séptimo la mujer se había desmayado.

El padre, presente en el quirófano, no dejaba de dar vueltas con las manos en la cabeza rogándole al médico que hiciera algo, que parase aquella barbarie. El doctor, por su parte, asistía perplejo a la situación y sólo se limitaba a cortar los cordones umbilicales que le iban presentando.

Para el decimocuarto, el desmayado era el padre y la que cortaba los cordones entonces era la enfermera auxiliar con las indicaciones del médico que, agotado, se había echado a un lado. Al poco, la sala se hallaba repleta de bebés por el suelo formando un círculo alrededor de la mesa de parto.

Finalmente habían tomado el pulso al dilatado alumbramiento y cortaban con celeridad la unión entre la madre y los sucesivos hijos. Pensaban en la fama que conseguirían con aquella proeza.

De pronto todo paró. Incluso los bebés dejaron de llorar al unísono. El padre, aún en el suelo, miró aterrado a los facultativos temiéndose lo peor. No se hizo esperar: los niños comenzaron a introducirse de nuevo en el cuerpo de la exhausta mujer.

Historia de dos ciudades y sus andares

by Jordi Corominas i Julián and Nil Bartolozzi (ilustración) el balompié expresa para mayor regocijo de la ociosa sociedad que nos ha tocado sufrir, Barça versus Madrid, para crispar ánimos y ocultar esquizofrenias que la política y el tenebroso pasado de la piel de toro enhebran en una continuidad lastimosa que aleja la máxima de los polos opuestos que se atraen.

El lunes por la mañana paseé en solitario por la calle Carretas, una de mis favoritas del centro.

Observaba el ambiente y noté sin mucha dificultad cómo las personas charlaban de sus cosas, sí, pero siempre con ojo avizor ante lo anómalo y lo sublime, firmes en su paso, pendientes de cualquier bache del camino por la innata curiosidad humana, útil para soltar un comentario divertido e integrarse en el magma urbano. Pocas horas después aterricé en la Ciudad Condal y me citaron para una reunión.

Cogí el metro y al salir a la superficie me desesperé por la lentitud de los pies, tortugas desprovistas de ojos en el cogote, mentes ensimismadas en la nada que impedían mi avance, como si con su silencioso caminar defendieran una anónima muralla que aún lucho por descifrar. De repente surgió una asociación, un símil futbolístico. El Real Madrid es un equipo que en su actual configuración se distingue por su pegada, lo que implica simplicidad en el juego y máxima efectividad, algo parecido al caminar de los madrileños, que no se andan con tonterías y van directos al grano cuando transitan por sus avenidas, todo lo contrario que los barceloneses, directos, pero –ya habéis comprobado mi desdicha– irres-

petuosos por una insólita habilidad en bloquear el progreso de otros transeúntes. Quizá por eso el Barça es una escuadra espectacular que destaca por el toque rápido, como si de este modo los jugadores azulgrana evitaran el slalom que los socios de la entidad inventan cuando se topan con otros individuos en la calle Pelayo o en las escaleras del underground, donde pese a la norma no escrita de habilitar dos carriles, uno para los estáticos y otro para los que tienen prisa, a veces resulta un drama sortear obstáculos y llegar a la cima. Por eso los chicos de Guardiola tienen a un Messi, hombre genial que tanto en Verdaguer como en las Gaunas sabe cuándo colocar el regate justo que anule el previsible aburrimiento de los contrarios y los transporte a una dimensión donde la lentitud no tiene lugar, universo destinado a catapultar la magia que aniquile la mediocridad de ahorrar en zapatos, filigrana que muchos practicamos en nuestro día a día con el mismo estilo ignorando la supuesta elegancia de Cristiano Ronaldo, un tipo que, como los madrileños, te mira directamente y más o menos indica qué hará en el siguiente movimiento, bailarín sincero al que le falta la sutileza de su odiado argentino, joven que con su guante blanco se hermana con Barcelona y le pide más clase para mayor comodidad del colectivo.

Cada vez visito más Madrid.

Cuando era pequeño la odiaba, seguramente porque nuestra educación pública más que unir separa desde su absurda pátina nacionalista, y por eso es una suerte crecer y darse cuenta de lo que vale un peine. La capital del reino, que esperemos en breve sea República, tiene de todo como en botica. Cada saludo a su suelo es descubrir maravillas desconocidas que embargan mi ánimo y lo llenan de una alegría intensa que siempre depara un nuevo ingrediente. Sí, está la noche con sus alcoholes, sonrisas, abrazos, miradas, personajes, besos y desmanes, pero cuando luce el sol sé que puedo deleitarme con otras riquezas nacidas por el carácter de los habitantes de la Villa, risueños y siempre dispuestos a entablar conversación con desconocidos por la extraña conciencia de una paridad entre humanos, todo lo contrario que en Barcelona, donde pisando el Paseo de Gracia siento el horror de la velocidad y pienso en el pánico que le entraría a Baudelaire al comprobar que mis conciudadanos son huraños, carentes del suficiente ánimo para romper con las convenciones e intentar una sociabilidad que les granjearía la simpatía de los recién llegados, hombres y mujeres que suelen alegrarme el día cuando dicen aquello de no pareces catalán, expresión de hondo significado, porque cuando llegas sin nada en los bolsillos de la amistad clamas comunicación. Estas dos actitudes simbolizan las diferencias entre las divas españolas, enfrentadas por la Historia en una lucha de cartón piedra que

Who will snatch up shops (typically, your old ferretería) more quickly? The community that holds the Spar monopoly firmly in its hands, or the Spanish treintañeros who “have a dream” and plan to open a gallery, a new clothes shop, a cute little bakery, a café...? As of now, the Spars dominate Sant Pere Més Baix and Mitjá while the treintañeros have conquered Més Alt and Portal Nou. We’ve stuck with the latter group for this Short List, but would like to note that a) not all Spars are the same and b) there is a long list of quirky galleries and shops that we would have loved to include.

Jota, owner of Pony, starts his day (oh well, evening) with a cup of ginkgo yogi tea and strawberry yoghurt. Disappointingly, he doesn’t ride a quadruped to the bar. As a matter of fact, he doesn’t even know where the name originally came from, or so he claims.

He’s run the bar for four years now, on his own, taking only Mondays off, selling medianas for 2.20€ from 6pm until, well, until closing time. The setting is unpretentious and dominated by the counter. This is where the local sits, on one of the 11 bar stools and never at a table. Though décor is sparse the tone is convivial. The loner sips his beer and reads the paper, a wife picks up her husband, Maxó from the new gallery next door comes in for a chat, and Jota’s friends discuss music (his taste is exquisite) while the guiri flirts with a new acquaintance. What’s exceptional about this bar apart from the freakish stuffed pony that sits on the counter top ? Nothing really, except its modesty and Jota’s smile. This bar is his baby.

The two Italians who run this tiny secondhand clothes shop found out the hard way that La Rivera isn’t El Born’s cute little sister but rather its sexy, bitchy ex. When they reported a breakin the police fined them for not having surveillance cameras installed and even though they warn customers, bags get snatched right in front of their doorstep with disturbing regularity. But while it might be safer below Princessa, their vintage shop for treasure hunting would not have the same encanto if it sat between a Munich and a Carhartt. The ground floor is filled with Prada and Gucci dresses and tops from the Golden ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, selected with an acute sense for quality and style.

A narrow staircase leads up to an even smaller second floor with neatly arranged Italian vintage shoes and bags from the past 50 years. Certain rare items are costly, but you won’t leave the shop empty-handed even if your budget is small. Just watch that purse when you leave.

Espai 27 Sant Pere Més Alt, 27 / espai-27.blogspot.com Anaÿs and Verónica opened this gallery in spring this year, seizing the opportunity because this sort of space isn’t up for grabs for very long. The current gallery part in the front is really just the tip of the iceberg. Ask them, where they are planning to do the mercadillos and tallers and they will show you the “back end”, an area as large as the nicely done up show rooms in the front. Exhibitions will change on a monthly basis and emphasis is placed on the unknown and novel.

They want to give the newcomers opportunities and the next show that inaugurates on October 16th suits the action to the word. It is a group show with 12 participating artists titled Photo-Soup that presents photographs and short films from English and Spanish artists whose names we yet haven’t heard of. You can see their work from 11:00h - 14:00h and 17:00h -21:00h until November 14th.

Bar Pasajes Sant Pere Més Alt, 31-33

This tiny bar inside a narrow private passageway that leads from Sant Pere Més Alt to Carrer Trafalgar has so much history that a proper description would fill pages. It’s also so neatly tucked away that you can walk up and down Més Alt for years without ever noticing it. It’s been in existence for roughly a century but only three month ago did Santi take over, an Argentino who traveled the Seven Seas for many years (the name derives from Port Pasajes, an industrial yet picturesque harbor in the Basque country). Luckily, he didn’t revamp the space, just touched a few things up so that you have got three different areas now, each with a distinct character. Principally changed has only the menu: Less bocatas and more bolas de Béchamel y Gruyère (1,80€) and papada de ternera (4.40€). But the best news is that they will offer what they call “desayunos Berlineses”, proper breakfasts with rye bread, müsli, fruit salad, and scrambled eggs. The bar is open from Monday to Friday from 8:30h – 23:00h.

Lolita is an odd one out. The bakery is a bit too cutesy to blend in with the rest of the hood but since all they sell is seriously sweet – from delicious muffins with heaps of icing to chocolate chip cookies, brownies and fancy cakes with seemingly infinite layers of cream – you can’t really argue against the old English look the two Argentine owners are going for. Do we want to see more Lolita-type shops in Sant Pere? Probably not. That’s what Born is for. But once you’ve stuffed that chocolate cupcake (2.25€) in your mouth and sat down in the small area at the back (fits 6 people tops) to hide from the harsh world out there whilst sipping on some homemade ice tea, you really don’t care no more. And if you’re looking for a special cake for a special occasion, talk to the ladies. They cater to all tastes. The shop is open from 10:00h – 20:00h Tuesdays to Fridays and from 11:00h – 21:00h on Saturdays and Sundays.

Los Top Ten – 16 September to 13 October 16.09 - 19.09 Art + Music / Sektor Berlin Everyone who comes back from a trip to Berlin tells us how awesome the city is, how cheap the living, how the art qscene thrives. Even the Germans in Berlin are OK, and everybody would love to live there if it weren’t for – yes, of course – the weather. During the winter months (and we’re talking October to April here) the capital is generally grey, crazy cold and deeply depressing. For the “Warmduscher” among us, it’s good news, then, that more and more creative minds are building bridges. “Sektor Berlin” is one such private initiative, sounding out possibilities for fertile cross-pollination and headed by two Berliners.

They’ve rented a large space in Poblenou (of course!) where they will exhibit art and play music made in BCN and BLN, respectively. The presentation of the project takes place at the Hotel Me on Thursday at 8pm. On Friday and Saturday the party continues at their studio at Pallars, 65-71, with DJ sets and an exhibition (17.09 from 6pm / 18.09 from 1pm-9pm with an after-beach party at Mac Arena Beach Club from 9pm). sektorberlin.com

17.09 Concert / Eels Imagine you wake up one early morning, let’s say at 3am, for no reason. The room fills with an eerie silence, your head with thoughts you don’t want to think, and you switch on the radio, from which the late night host has just announced E’s new album release for August 24th. Because you expect another gloomy End Timetype tune, you reach for the off button. But the water glass is in the way, liquid spills, and before you know it “This Is Where It Gets Good” has begun: a beautiful, sort-of upbeat (remember, this is still the Eels) love ode that starts, “With lustful admiration,” accompanied by electronic beats that bring nothing but sweet dreams.

Filter Magazine put it nicely: “Tomorrow Morning is as warm as it is weird and the perfect listen for anyone who wrongly believes happy people are all the same.”

We’ve been taught by every Hollywood teen movie that this night will be the most important of our lives, so we’d better not screw it up. But is spilling spiked punch on a rented tux and aimlessly driving around in over-sized white limousines what it should really be about? The penya over at La Oscura Ceremonia thinks not, and they’re out to reinvent this tradition as an orgy of terror, dancing, and rock and roll. It’s not often that we can publicly cover ourselves with fake blood, and who knows when you’ll have another chance to be named the king or queen of anything? That said, Spooky High has a penchant for details and guests are expected to wear their best and most petrifying attire for the occasion.

But as every tendency has undertows, so the “throw away” lifestyle has produced responses: produced responses: recycling, abstinence, and collecting. Once upon a time the sole guardian of sound, the beloved 12” disc is a collectors’ item these days. But no digital storage device – even if they reduced them to the size of a thumbnail, which is probably already happening – will ever be able to completely supplant the good old LP. Indeed, the more digital we get and the less there is to “hold on to”, the more popular the heavy, round records that store a maximum of 45 minutes of sound. The international Fira del disc that takes place at the Estació del Nord this first weekend of October proves the point. Record dealers from near and far will offer their treasures for sale. Even if you don’t own a record player, the old-school covers can be works of art in their own right.

Ongoing Resurrection / ANTIGUA CASA HAIKU On October 28th, 2009, friends and fans of the cultural space Antigua Casa Haiku were invited to its funeral, which took place in their former headquarters on Milà i Fontanals. The grief was palpable; the puddle of tears big enough for a toddler to drown in. But less than a year later, they’re up and running again. It’s still happening in Gràcia, just a few streets down the block at Perill, 43.

Se acabaron las vacaciones y nada mejor que despedir el verano pasando por el Festival HIPNOTIK de cultura urbana en el CCCB el 18 septiembre. Y a pesar del más que probable recorte presupuestario por parte del ayuntamiento en las fiestas de la Mercè en su 18 cumpleaños, la organización nos trae un gran cartel en el BAM, muy calladito se lo tenían. Como cabeza de cartel, Belle & Sebastian, con su indie pop escocés que inspira fanatismo entre sus seguidores. Nos visitan de nuevo OK Go, grupo indie americano, más conocido por sus enérgicos videoclips y por su extraño sentido de la moda, y Goldfrapp, dúo inglés basado en melodías eclécticas y electrónica experimental. Entre los de casa tenemos a Mujeres y los Surfing Sirles con un espectáculo conjunto llamado “Eix-transversal”, a los San León presentando su disco Bits & Pieces con su pop rock folk tropical, y a El guincho que vuelve con disco nuevo reintentando el “pop negro” como dice él.

En Razzmatazz nos visitarán los Mystery Jets, representando a la última generación de bandas inglesas, siendo tal vez su cara más arty, progresiva y bailable de toda esta hornada neo-rock, ¡¡no os los perdáis!!

En el Apolo destacamos a Los claveles, desde Madrid, pop marrano con ritmos tropicales recordando a la movida madrileña (18 septiembre). A los Mudhoney, banda pionera del grunge de Seattle de los 90 para los más nostálgicos. Y gran expectación para ver a Brandon Flowers (vocalista de The Killers) que viene a presentar su proyecto en solitario.

Por último, nuestros colegas los Fucking Bollocks el 24 septiembre en la sala Moog, y no faltéis a las citas de Garage Tropical Sounds.

Avui escriuré sobre unes pel·lícules que no podrem veure projectades a principis d’octubre al CCCB. L’any 2000 a Barcelona va començar a caminar el Docupolis, festival de cine documental, i durant 9 anys es va arribar a consolidar com el festival més veterà d’aquest gènere a la Península Ibèrica. La darrera edició fou l’any passat.

La falta de suport de les institucions públiques i la negativa del CCCB a seguir-lo acollint han tancat aquesta important finestra per aproximar-nos a les diferents realitats que ens aportaven els seus films.

Encara que continua d’una altra forma a Santiago de Chile, és una llàstima que la nostra ciutat deixi de banda les oportunitats de mantenir i donar suport a iniciatives que, com el Docupolis, ens nodreixen d’altres perspectives i enriquidores experiències.

La ciutat “de moda” on fer màsters de cine documental i que de vegades s’ha transformat en l’escenari de pel·lícules de directors consagrats internacionalment no és capaç d’amparar ni de fer perdurar un festival que durant quasi una dècada ens ha obert les portes a aquesta interessant especialitat cinematogràfica.

Suposo que el problema una vegada més és “la moda”, i és que aquest terme i el gènere documental son antagònics, però a Barcelona sembla que en els últims temps tot és un aparador de prêt-à-porter… I això ho sabem molts. Les polítiques només orientades a guanyar les eleccions a qualsevol preu dificulten la difusió i la consolidació de la cultura i l’art que no segueixin les darreres tendències.

Des de aquí animo a la gent amb propostes com el Docupolis que lluitin per divulgar aquests films que ens emocionen i que ens fan pensar… ingredients bàsics i molt importants per combatre la tonteria.

I stood in a gallery the other day, in front of indolently splattered oil on canvas, pondering the 535€ price tag, taste in art, and whether there were really anybody out there who would spend such an amount on such a listless product. I walked out thinking that one can argue over taste. As fruitless as it might be to discuss whether a certain color combo is pleasing, or a style outdated, it’s legit to debate the level of lethargy or passion inherent in the visual conclusion an artist has reached. Kirk Varnedoe (check his Mellon Lectures), chief curator of the MoMA in NYC between 1988 and 2001, spent insane amounts of money to acquire Van Gogh’s Postman. It’s said to be the most expensive painting the museum has ever purchased. Now, one does not have to “enjoy” Van Gogh’s “style”, but one does need to recognize the intensity with which he portrayed Joseph Roulin, a postal employee in Arles who became a surrogate brother, caring for the artist during the major onset of mental illness in 1888 and seeing him through the asylum months of early 1889. Similarly, you don’t have to “take pleasure” in Miquel Barceló’s “how” (Caixa Forum until 09.01.2011), but if you fail to recognize the insane sway that his work exudes, you must be harboring a shriveled tomato in place of a soul. Things get interesting when mad passion meets audacity and skill. Irene Bou’s work (Artevistas 09.09 – 24.10), which “translates” her preoccupation with violence, violator and victim, is one such example. Completely different and more thoughtful, but no less passionate, is the photographic oeuvre of Paco Gómez at the Fundació Foto Colectania (06.10-29.01). And, finally, there’s something challenging about Sonia Pulido’s ‘50s-paper-doll retro aesthetic (Galería CMTV 23.09-23.10); she manages to insinuate uncanniness into mundane situations. From a personal point of taste, it’s worth every penny.

Septiembre: volver a empezar, volver a trabajar, volver a estudiar... Pero sobre todo, ¡¡volver a disfrutar del teatro!! Supongo que muchos de vosotros habréis asistido a la Fira de Teatre al Carrer de Tàrrega, si no, no os preocupéis, porque en Barcelona tenemos muchas propuestas interesantes.

En primer lugar, os informo que ha nacido Dansalona, la nueva propuesta cultural de Barcelona alrededor de la danza. Hasta el 24 de septiembre, coincidiendo con la clausura de la Festes de la Mercè, podréis disfrutar de variedad de estilos en diversos teatros y en la calle: flamenco, hip-hop, country, tap dance, contemporáneo… ¡Estad bien atentos, porque han llegado compañías de prestigio a nivel internacional y también emergentes para formar parte de esta primera edición! Si lo que os gusta es la investigación y creación teatral, lo que no os podéis perder es la 5ª Muestra de Laboratorio de Artes Escénicas Tísner, que tendrá lugar del 30 de septiembre al 3 de octubre en el Centre Cívic Cotxeres Borrell. Se presentarán los proyectos desarrollados durante el quinto año del Laboratorio y seguro que no os deja indiferentes (eso sí, como es gratis ¡¡hay que reservar plaza!!).

Por último, si lo vuestro es ser partícipes del espectáculo, tomad nota del nuevo encuentro ExpresArte, que se hace cada primer viernes del mes. El próximo será el 1 de octubre en el Inusual Project y pueden participar tod@s l@s artistas que quieran apuntándose con antelación (cantantes, monologuistas, bailarines…). Quién sabe, ¡quizás es tu oportunidad para demostrar el arte que llevas dentro! Además ten en cuenta que l@s artistas inscritos no pagan entrada… Yo creo que con todo esto se nos olvida hasta el síndrome post-vacacional, ¿no?

by Iñigo Mielgo Salcedo & Martín Frasso (photo) “Ante la idea generalizada de que en la actualidad hay un comportamiento de eterna adolescencia, se podría argumentar que la cosa no está tan clara, y que simultáneamente los adolescentes se están comportando como adultos. La realidad es el que el mercado ya no se basa en etapas biológicas o de crecimiento para dirigir sus estrategias de marketing, sino que lo más importante es la capacidad adquisitiva del individuo. Tenemos un mercado que en el presente se afana en unir lo antes posible la identidad de abastecimiento del individuo, a los flujos mercantiles del momento, para satisfacer los deseos y orientarlos. Así que el mercado parece rescatar de la sociedad premoderna, la velocidad de tránsito entre la infancia y la adultez. En el pasado el grado de adulto se conseguía después de orquestar un ritual, danza o prueba, en la que el individuo se exponía al grupo, o demostraba ser merecedor del mérito, mérito que estaba cargado de derechos y responsabilidades.

Pero a diferencia del pasado, la adolescencia actual, llena como siempre de sed de aventuras y experiencias, convierte a los quinceañeros en grandes consumidores que no basan su poder de compra en recursos

propios, sino en recursos que les vienen otorgados, y de los que quizá en el futuro no dispondrán (o quizá no en la misma medida).

Además de ser una identidad de abastecimiento, rasgo común con el resto de individuos, hay que añadir que los/as adolescentes tienen una identidad otorgada por padres que ofrecen la posibilidad a sus vástagos de obrar como adultos, a la hora de consumir arbitrariamente. Los padres alimentan indoloramente la capacidad adquisitiva de sus hijos adolescentes, y el temor ya no es experimentado por el niño/a que se convierte en adulto/a porque se expone a la sociedad o a un animal salvaje, o a un tatuaje doloroso, sino que el temor es sentido por los padres, que por diversas razones, quizá un hipotético desprecio o rechazo de sus descendientes, o angustia de que el niño/a no alcance el status anhelado, o simplemente por dejarse llevar por la dinámica del shopping, agasajan con una adultez rápida. Al final, es como que los adolescentes consumen como adultos, y los adultos viven como adolescentes, que es como decir que hay adolescentes educando a consumidores adultos.”

El sonido de los ventiladores, especialmente en horas noctámbulas, transmite una sensación de relajación y de alivio frente a las temperaturas veraniegas, al tiempo que eleva un poco el monto del recibo de la electricidad.

Muchos de los usuarios de este fundamental utensilio, presentan una latente mucosidad en sus gargantas a lo largo del verano. Una especie de presencia carrasposa estacionaria que en algunos casos se convierte en ardor e incluso en una tos larga y atascada, como de fumadora ibérica soltera en sus late 30’s, de “Haschisómano” de la plaza George Orwell, o de guitarrero pelut de la plaza del Sol. Su polvo, empujado por el viento componente sudoeste o las aspas de los ventiladores, igual que las palmeras de la plaza Real o de la Barceloneta; los rateros-carteristasvendedores-de-hachís-hierba-etc. de la calle Escudellers; los que están parados siempre allí en la calle de l’Hospital haciendo bromas hostiles o los emprendedores e insistentes arrebatadores de bolsos del Borne son tan magrebíes como los toboganes nasales de Bab El Oued en Argel, las onduladas pelambres en la Mezquita Hassan II de Casablanca o los gargarismos fonéticos.

La acumulación doméstica del polvo en Barcelona, así como la alergia producida por él, es una realidad palpable para todos y cada uno de sus residentes. Las amas de casa luchan perpetuamente por removerlo de sus aposentos, una feroz presencia que

se refleja de igual forma en el tejido urbano: bancos, contenedores de basura, coches, asientos de motocicletas y bicis, etc.; y se acentúa en el aire que respiramos en los cruces peatonales al estrepitoso paso de algún autobús o conductor particular.

Para el asombro de muchos, recientemente se anunció que Barcelona “controlará las tormentas de polvo sahariano”, por lo que próximamente la ciudad “acogerá el nuevo Centro de Evaluación y Avisos de Tormentas de Arena y Polvo Atmosférico para Europa, Norte de África y Oriente Medio, en lo que será el segundo centro de estas características en todo el mundo, junto con otro ubicado en China”. Contando con el patrocinio de la Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) y la Organización Meteorológica Mundial.

Uno de los principales objetivos de la naciente institución es “proporcionar herramientas específicas de predicción y observación de polvo atmosférico a los servicios meteorológicos de países del norte de África, Oriente Medio y Europa, que así podrán afinar sus sistemas de vigilancia y activar las medidas oportunas para paliar las consecuencias”. En tal sentido, la ciudadanía y los empleados de limpieza, no así las casas fabricantes y distribuidoras de escobas y aspiradoras, esperan con las narices y las bocas bien abiertas la pronta erradicación parcial del polvo barcelonés, dándole preponderancia a otros tipos de polvos en constante movimiento en la capital catalana, siempre presentes en las mesas y baños de sus discotecas y “afters”, y especialmente en sus páginas de anuncios: “chica cachonda busca a alguien que le eche un buen polvo”.

Cuando un sentimiento se atrinchera aun sabiendo perdida la guerra, sobrevienen la desesperación o la determinación y, entre los dispuestos a rendirse, se muestran aquellos seres capaces de presentar batalla, camuflándose en el terreno o acechando los flancos con el sigilo de la niebla. Seres que perderán la guerra de todos modos pero que le ofrecen a otros la belleza de su empeño y valentía. Del desamor nace la mitad de la literatura, dicen, y de uno tan amordazado como Zoo o cartas de no amor recibimos hoy un regalo y una lección de literatura y vida.

El Berlín de los primeros años veinte acogió a buena parte del exilio ruso y entre aquellos que huían de una revolución fraticida se encontraban los escritores Viktor Shklovski y Elsa Triolet. De su encuentro resultaría este amor alimentado durante años por Shklovski, incapaz sin embargo de retener a su lado al pájaro libre que siempre fue Elsa, la Alia del libro, la misma Elsa que luego sería musa y compañera de Louis Aragon. Si Zoo o cartas de no amor es una lección no es sólo por su historia, sino también por el modo en que su autor trata el lenguaje mismo, la figura de Elsa o el mundo que les tocó vivir. Coetáneo y camarada de autores como Gorki, Maiakovski o Zamiatin, poeta reconocido y partícipe en primera instancia de los grandes

cambios en su país, Shklovski decide abandonarlo por principios, disconforme con la deriva del régimen soviético. En Berlín se convierte en un exiliado más, en un poeta desapercibido y un hombre expuesto. Su ideal le mueve incluso a respetar las reglas del juego que Elsa impondría en su especial relación, al prohibirle el amor mismo como tema de sus frecuentes cartas. Así, el autor mimetizaría sus sentimientos en otros motivos, en un fino retrato del Berlín de la época, del abigarrado cuadro del exilio ruso y de la literatura y el arte de aquellos días extraños en la vieja Europa. Pero, sobre todo, el discurso literario de Shklovski obedece a un criterio firme y honesto, a una convicción de que la forma puede albergar profundidad bajo la ligereza, de que la palabra puede ser bella sin padecer el excesivo adorno. De que cabe antes mostrar que decir.

El compendio de cartas y sucesivos prólogos que el autor fue añadiendo a las diferentes ediciones de Zoo o cartas de no amor conoce en la de Ático de los Libros su versión definitiva y mejor trabajada en castellano, en un libro con el que todavía hoy puede el lector emocionarse y disfrutar de esta guerra que quizá Shklovski perdió en el amor pero que, sin duda, ganó para la literatura.

En su nuevo libro, el guatemalteco Eduardo Halfon parte de uno de los relatos de El boxeador polaco, su anterior título en PreTextos, para trazar la peculiar odisea de un pianista mestizo, mitad serbio, mitad gitano. A través de la música, el personaje de Milan Rakic no emprenderá, sin embargo, su regreso a Ítaca, sino que elegirá un nomadismo perpetuo en busca de cierta raíz ancestral. Tanto el protagonista de la novela como el propio Halfon, que una vez más se camufla en personaje de su propia obra, rechazan una suerte de inercia heredada, reniegan de la casa del padre y de la gravedad de la Historia, para tratar de abrirse un espacio entre toda esa tierra opaca, extender sus raíces aéreas y respirar otra realidad. Halfon lo hace en sus ficciones, siempre mezcla de sueño e inventario personal, y el pianista serbio lo intenta en su particular trashumancia, en una historia que ofrece diferentes capas de lectura y distintos códigos a través de la amistad, el jazz, la literatura, el viaje, el erotismo o la identidad. Con una escritura trabajada pero liviana, y una atmósfera tan onírica como intensa, La pirueta nos recuerda que no estamos condenados a echar raíces donde otros nos dejaron, sino obligados a buscar nuestro propio camino.

Pocas cosas tan gratas para el crítico como asistir a la madurez de un autor y a la coherencia de un sello editorial. Lo segundo se hace evidente al anotar en el catálogo reciente de Inéditor relatos como los de Atractores extraños, de Javier Moreno, o novelas como La emboscada, un libro de riesgo y bien tramado con el que Iván Humanes se licencia definitivamente en este asunto del escribir. Sin necesidad de adherirse a ninguna corriente, Humanes asume sin complejos todas esas técnicas y búsquedas de la supuesta vanguardia: la narración fragmentada, la permeabilidad de géneros y el mecanismo de las muñecas rusas, es decir, la literatura en otras cápsulas de literatura.

Pero, al mismo tiempo, La emboscada es una apasionante partida de ajedrez en la que, sobre el tablero siempre mágico y oscuro del bosque, se amaga el siguiente movimiento y al mismo tiempo se sugiere, en un juego anfibio entre realidad y ficción donde, para bien del lector, el autor sabe perfectamente cómo dispone cada ficha. En un tiempo en el que se estila y se estira el chicle fácil de la novela complaciente, en este bosque editorial en el que la creatividad está en jaque, Iván Humanes se zafa con un enroque largo y apuesta por la literatura.

Poison “Poison” is the first Rancid song I ever recorded and the reason is this: I was cooking with an ex-boyfriend of mine and we were listening to Rancid and I was singing along, but instead of screaming I was singing sweetly the harmonies, and we started to laugh because we were both conceptual artists who could see the irony in this. I decided I wanted to record the way that I sang the Rancid songs, and so I learned how to play the accordion by teaching myself those chords.

Toy Piano My dad gave me my toy piano for Christmas last year in a big box with a bow! I’ve never played real piano, but just like a kid, from playing the toy piano, I’m beginning to understand the real piano!

Rancid Rancid was my favorite band for like… 5 years. More. Even when I didn’t listen to punk anymore, if somebody asked me my favorite band I said Rancid because I liked most of their albums, and that was more than I could say for most bands.

Aid I hate asking people for help and the shitty thing is that when they DO help me, I usually don’t thank them very well because I feel so uncomfortable. This is why it’s often difficult for me to collaborate with other people in my music, I just get really bent out of shape and weird about it.

Punk rock tapes My first car, a 1979 volvo station wagon, only had a tapedeck, so even before I got the car, my best friend prepared mix tapes of all our favorite punk bands: Rancid, The Distillers, Bad Religion, etc. so that even before I drove the car, we just sat in it listening to our tapes.

¡Qué feo! (observaciones de una chica ociosa)

by Judith Alarcón Bardera Los quioscos ya están inundados de fascículos y los anuncios del Cutre Inglés han sembrado de hojarasca nuestras percepciones para vender prendas de entretiempo. Cuánto me jode el otoño. Será por los años de trauma con la vuelta al cole. O será que las Rayban del optimismo se me han caído al suelo y he pisado los cristales. Después del escapismo veraniego con la Costa Brava como decorado, vuelvo a la realidad de la cuenta bancaria en números rojos.

Por suerte, me puedo regodear exhibiendo mi victimismo, como buena catalana (consciente de los amores y odios que va a despertar este comentario), en esta columna y eso que me ahorro en psicólogo (la pela és la pela, you know). El título de este mes se lo dedico a algunas cosas/personas/situaciones sufridas/ vividas durante este mes de agosto que me han hecho girar la cabeza en ademán de desaprobación, inclinando el mentón hacia el hombro derecho en un gesto enérgico, con caída de ojos incluida, al estilo de la femme fatal en los films de intriga policíaca de los fifties.

El primer y segundo ¡qué feo! se lo dedico a mis amigos de Facebook por acosarme con las fotos de sus exóticas vacaciones en Tailandia, y que luego me azotan con su falta de imaginación y de caras largas (¿emoticonos largos?) provocados por la reentré.

Otro ¡qué feo! para papá Estado, que me ha dejado tirada denegándome el PRODI. Después de tratarme como una princesita durante año y medio, me quita mi paga mensual por malentendidos burocráticos. ¡Fuck it por abandonarme a mi suerte de la noche a la mañana! ¡Qué feo! para los empleadores que se aprovechan de la crisis, ofreciendo la “oportunidad” de servir mesas sin contrato durante 60 horas semanales por un sueldo de mierda. ¡Qué feo! a los robos e intentos de robo, el verdadero hit de este verano en Barcelona.

Me ahorro las historias que solo he oído, son muchas, sólo voy a exponer una muestra de lo presenciado por esta menda. Visto en el cruce entre Basses de Sant Pere y Sant Pere Més Baix, principios de julio: a una señora le roban el bolso en su coche por la ventanilla del copiloto. Un clásico. En su huida, el delincuente tira al suelo a otra señora que se le interpuso valientemente. Visto en metro Drassanes, a finales de julio: dos viejitos rodeados de una pequeña marea de chavales de 15 años que pretendían robarles la cartera.

Los viejitos, con una elegancia admirable, les ofrecían encajar la mano en señal de “Ya vemos por donde vais chavales pero, ¡nos hemos dado cuenta! Por eso nos hemos metido la cartera por el ojete”. Pero como si nada, los pequeños bastardos seguían como hienas husmeando los billetes de la pensión, aún cubiertos de mierda.

Visto en Montjuïc, a principios de agosto: un señor muy educado que se convierte en profeta al advertirme que sería mejor que fuera bajando ya hacia Poble Sec, que la cosa se pone fea por esos lares cuando cae el atardecer. Y como si de vampiros se tratara, un minuto después aparecen dos sujetos sospechosos que me rodean con sospechosas intenciones, y me hacen huir cames ajudeu-me porque no deseo comprobar el supuesto fin

de su sospechosa actitud. Teniendo en cuenta que me he pasado la mayor parte del verano costabraveando (como he mencionado más arriba), y que por naturaleza soy de las que va por la calle papant mosques, he recopilado bastante material. Lo he añadido al “Mapa de robatoris de Barcelona”, cortesía de Google Maps al que, si queréis, podéis añadir vuestras propias reseñas sobre aventuras y desventuras con los pick pockets. Esperemos que la Guàrdia Urbana le eche un ojo de vez en cuando.

Y por fin, el top de mis ¡qué feos!: durante las fiestas de Sants, un martes a las 2 de la mañana, calle Alcolea. Ahora no recuerdo el nombre del artista, pero le vamos a llamar Manuel, su piano y sus dos coristas, que me parece que describe bastante bien la esencia del sencillo y respetable espectáculo. Pues bien, el señor Manuel, su piano y sus dos coristas, terminan su show puntualmente a la hora señalada como “cívica” para un día laborable. Los asistentes, frustrados y tristes por la repentina falta de ambiente para seguir con sus tácticas de cortejo sexual, imploran, a ebrio grito pelao, que Manuel vuelva a darle al ON para reproducir las melodías que ahora y siempre han ayudado al magreo facilón.

Manuel, muy educadamente, intenta explicar a los congregados que sus órdenes son muy claras en el aspecto horario, y nos invita a asistir a su próximo concierto en otra calle durante las fiestas. En estas, sucede el acto más incívico visto por mi jamás: un vecino del tercer piso, cuya ventana asomaba, por desgracia, justo encima del escenario, va y le tira como 20 litros de agua encima al pobre Manuel, a sus coristas y al piano, chillando improperios del tipo: “¡Hijos de puta, iros a vuestra puta casa ya!”. Menuda joya. Huelga decir que no creo que este individuo perteneciera a la asociación de vecinos. Los abucheos de los presentes, indignados, no se hicieron de esperar, y la respuesta del vecino-manantialde-mala-leche fue repetir la ducha. Minutos después del incidente, que me dejó con la boca abierta y con un sentimiento de solidaridad muy profundo hacia Manuel, las coristas y el piano, me dirigí hacia la otra punta de la calle, porque me pareció divisar hombres uniformados (fetichismo mío). Ciertamente, había más de una patrulla de la Guardia Urbana ahí reunida que, en otros casos me hubiera llenado de gozo la vista, pero entonces iba con la determinación de la heroína en busca de refuerzos. Así que les espeté el caso que acababa de presenciar y lo más que conseguí fue un “si llaman, ya enviarán una patrulla hacia allá”. ¿Cómo se te queda el cuerpo?

Como simple ciudadana que papa mosques, no sé nada del protocolo de actuación policial. Pero, como simple ciudadana que papa mosques, me gustaría que si hay un poli a dos minutos de una fuente de problemas, pueda confiar en que se dignará a dar unos cuantos pasos para que el incidente deje de ocurrir o que, por lo menos, no se agrave. Y sobre todo, para que patrullas que cubren otras zonas de la ciudad no tengan que desplazarse a donde ya está más que cubierto. Qué feo.

Just a few nights ago I was enjoying a lovely evening on the Rambla de Raval. In cool weather and warm company we had purchased a shawarma and set ourselves down on the pavement for a casual evening of loitering and good conversation. We were having such a good time, in fact, that we didn’t want to leave. Unfortunately, with some beer under our belts, the time soon came for the female members of our band to relieve themselves of urine in a socially appropriate way, ie by using facilities with running water.
