Editors’ Letter Staring out at the rain through old window glass gives you a pretty good idea of what the world will look like when your eyesight’s no longer what it used to be. It’s easy to imagine that there’ll be a certain comfort in landscapes characterized by random bubbles, hazy forms and smeared edges. There’s no need to try to focus on your surroundings if you know you can’t. Once you’ve forgotten that you’ve forgotten the precise shapes of objects, you may not even miss them any more.

On the other hand, no one wants to rush into blindness, does he? For all the pains in the ass that life dishes up, there’s a lot of charm in the detail. A turn of phrase, a glint in the eye, a pack of pipas on a terraza...they all make waiting worth it. The skies will eventually part and that glorious southern sun will light up our streets.

Until then, we’ll have to content ourselves with seeking the best shelter we can, and hoping that tomorrow will be a little less soggy. Go to Venus on Avinyo and read a book. Hide out in the corner of Ginger with your lover. See a play instead of repeating a critic’s review. Buy a new napping blanket for your sofa. Make tea, not beer. Try to insert more hours into the day by refusing to let them slip by.

Just because the tiempo’s malo isn’t an excuse to procrastinate. Some of the best things in the world have been created in the pouring rain: Vietnamese food, La Pluie, Pourville, Belgium. Think of yourself as a little soil grub in your cocoon, eating your way through compost to a better future. By the time the sun comes out, you’re going to be big and fat and ready to go.

Al principio me costó muchísimo cambiar mi forma de entender el arte. Pintas para ti, para luego mostrarlo al mundo, y si te pagan por ello, es maravilloso.

Yo no sé qué es vivir del arte. Lo he intentado y me he rendido. Me he apartado de todo esto, asumiendo que jamás viviré del arte. Continúo trabajando donde puedo, para comer y financiarme mis pinturas. Pintaré el resto de mi vida, porque es así como entiendo mi existencia en este mundo. Y lo haré donde pueda y donde mi imaginación me lleve. He aprendido a valorar otras cosas más importantes que el fetichismo del arte. Me importa el ser humano y el arte al lado de él me es insignificante.

Civisme de veritat QUEJAS The cops who work at the station at the bottom of the Ramblas sit around like kings and ticket cyclists who ride their bikes across the walkway trying to get to the other side of the street. Perhaps there’s a monthly fine quota to fulfil? While of course it’s ludicrous to call this sort of thing “crime prevention”, it’s made even more absurd by the hypocrisy of the policemen themselves. How many times have I seen them ride their motorbikes, or even drive a fucking car, from one side to the other?

For every idealist that’s ever dreamed of working in a small, passionately caring environment: if you also want to get things done, an NGO might not be for you.

Thank you to the Ajuntament for continuing to put in new bike lanes. It’s a big step in the right direction.

As it’s still a bit new for pedestrians, however, perhaps we should review a couple of the basics. The chief one is this: the bike lanes are not an extension of the sidewalk. They are not a good place to wait to cross the street against the light (you’ll get run over), or tongue-lash your boyfriend (you’ll get run over) or sort your rubbish (YOU WILL GET RUN OVER).

Online banking, what a treat. Between the slowloading fancy features and the buried menus that seem to contain such interesting tidbits as the names of people that owe you money and your SWIFT code, it’s a wonder that anyone gets anything done. I seem to remember a day when things were easier. Uglier, maybe, but easier. Bring back the excel sheets and the one-page layout. I can’t find anything.

Is it just me or is public discourse becoming more and more bullshitty by the day? Is there any chance that the anarchists will rise again, for real? I think we need a little decomposition in the structure of our political system.

I’ll be the first to admit that I become obsessed with songs and play them over and over again to the exclusion of all else. It’s actually amazing how the human ear just cannot tire of certain things that hit the right chord. Unfortunately, I’m now realizing that I have probably inflicted the same minor torture upon my friends, family, and neighbors that my current neighbor is inflicting upon me. Do The Strokes have a new album, or is there perhaps an Italian band that sounds like The Strokes that has one very catchy tune that has been playing on the other side of my bedroom wall for the last 21 days?

Have any studies been done about this? How long can I expect to wait for the song to change?

I came downstairs this weekend to find that there were any number of soiled tissues in the entryway of my building. I suppose they were thrown there by some miscreant resident, but I don’t really get it.

Does a window look like a trash can? Could they not make it to the trash can? Did the tissues jump out of their pocket? When I commiserated with the portera, she only said, “Imagine how they are in the summer when I’m gone for a month.”

Beloved BCNetas, you do an ugly job daily with great dignity and I wouldn’t want to complain (even thought it’s not me who let’s recibos and wrapping paper “inconspicuously” slide to the ground even though the nearest trash bin is only meters away), but it would be awfully nice if you could remember to let the trash bins snap back in after you’ve emptied them. There are situations in life when you need to hold on to them and you look terribly stupid if even the bin lets go of you.

Estimad@s lectores, It has come to the attention of our staff that some Barcelona residents do not find the city’s civisme laws entirely adequate. by Raúl Muniente Sariñena El sí legal a la consulta independentista no legal En varias entrevistas Artur Mas, el flamante presidente de la Generalitat, ha soltado la gran boutade, “yo estoy a favor de la independencia de Catalunya, pero mi partido no lo está”. Esta frase, que podría llegarse a oír en todos los militantes de CiU y que reflejaría una curiosa ironía lacaniana, ha tenido su fiel reflejo a nivel político. A propuesta de Solidaritat Catalana ‒solidaridad contra España, se entiende‒, y con el apoyo de ERC, CiU e ¡ICV!, el Parlament ha votado que se pueda votar por votar por la Independencia de Catalunya. Desde esta columna no nos produce vómitos el viraje bonapartista de CiU, perfectamente predecible si uno sigue la historia universal y el periplo decadente clásico de los partidos étnicos, sino la postura del antiguo Partido Comunista, ahora integrado en el penoso ICV. Los tres valores de moda, la iniciativa, por todas partes te dicen que ¡debes tener iniciativa¡; la catalanidad, por todas partes te dicen que ¡tienes que sentirte catalán!, y el ecologismo, por todas partes te dicen que ¡tienes que comer verde! Se conjuran para destruir la heroica y fraternal perspectiva utópica socialista clásica, simbolizada en el neofeudalismo catalán.

El derecho a la autodeterminación Este derecho se lo sacaron de la manga Lenin y Stalin para aplicarlo a los países capitalistas, los cuales tenían el derecho a “autodeterminarse” o sea, a hacerse comunistas.

Era un truco de agitprop típico destinado a bañar el ego de los ciudadanos de los países de la órbita soviética, un truco destinado a la masa trabajadora teutona, anglosajona y demás bárbaros, para que se pasaran al lado luminoso soviético. Ese derecho de autodeterminación, que fue algo táctico y complejo y que apelaba a la clase obrera de los países de la órbita soviética para unirse al Imperio Soviético, ahora es utilizado por los hábiles servicios de inteligencia estadounidenses en su propio provecho. Hete aquí el ejemplo a la moda que utilizan los mandarines de CDC, Kosovo. Un país creado en el corazón de Yugoslavia con el fin de montar la base militar estadounidense más tocha de Europa apuntando a Rusia, y todo con las bagatelas teóricas de la autodeterminación. Lo más lamentable es que, en su infinita ceguera, haya antiguos comunistas que crean que el proyecto europeo, esa égida burguesa franco-alemana pivotada por

EEUU. Esto nos confirma lo peor, que estas gentes no fueron nunca comunistas sino modernuquis tontunos. Desde Izquierda Hispánica, donde defendemos una futura Unión de Repúblicas Socialistas Iberoamericanas, toda esta gente no nos resulta únicamente ridícula por su ignorante adulación al eje franco-alemán, sino que hemos empezado ya a burlarnos con infinito desprecio de la maldad intrínseca de sus corruptas posiciones.

Al César lo que es del César Lo que tienen de traidores a la causa de que el amor universal triunfe, lo tienen de espabilados para la cuestión del ahorro. Mientras el Gobierno adopta la medida de las pegatinas de 110 en las señales, la Generalitat ha montado unos cursos para que los conductores conduzcan ahorrando combustible. Se trata de cursos para que la gente no vaya en marchas cortas o haga los cambios con dulzura. Esta ley, valorando que somos un país con menos petróleo que astronautas, debería popularizarse ya a nivel nacional, obligando a las autoescuelas a enseñar este tipo de maniobras para ahorrar gasofa.

El clan Hamidovic Esa Ítaca del independentismo catalán, la antigua Yugoslavia, no para de dejarnos su huella. En esta ocasión, han sido detenidos en Barcelona 11 bosnios que obligaban a 50 jovencitas bosnias a robar en el metro barcelonés. Si las jóvenes no llegaban a un mínimo de dinero establecido por los jefes, las agredían sexualmente y también las obligaban a prostituirse. El grupo conseguía robando unos beneficios semanales de entre 30.000 y 40.000 euros. Unas migajas en comparación con la cúpula de CIU.

Las putas El ayuntamiento ha admitido que la ordenanza cívica que redactó hace 5 años no ha sido suficiente para reducir la prostitución.

Sólo ha sido válida para fomentar el efecto de la presión vecinal y propiciar un aumento de la discreción de las putas. O sea, la ordenanza ha multiplicado la hipocresía en nuestras calles. El ayuntamiento insiste en que sólo se multa al putero, pero en el último año se multó a 2183 prostitutas por 912 puteros. Y ahora, una curiosidad sociológica, en primer lugar se encuentran las rumanas, en segundo las ecuatorianas, y este año, por primera vez, las nigerianas han adelantado a las españolas en la tercera plaza. No levantamos cabeza.

TORMENTA LA LITERATURA, PARAGUAS CONTRA LA INTOLERANCIA

La escritura es una forma de no bendecir la realidad, de cuestionarla. Con la literatura el ser humano hace lluvia y hace vida cuando dice lluvia y dice vida, pero a lo largo de los siglos demasiados escritores han tenido que empuñar un paraguas ingrato y difícil, cada vez que la intransigencia les ha obligado al silencio. La censura y la intolerancia son tan antiguas como nuestra civilización, pero tal vez desde el siglo XX hayan dejado de manera más sangrante su oscura huella. La lista de escritores que, bajo un régimen autoritario de cualquier signo y por sus obras e ideas, han sido censurados, encarcelados, desterrados o asesinados parece, por desgracia, interminable. Las dos grandes ideologías antagonistas que llevaron al mundo al borde del colapso a mediados del pasado siglo arrollaron con todo su aparato represor a una constelación irrepetible de escritores, especialmente en lengua rusa y alemana.

Pero la infamia es universal: también en otras latitudes y bajo la misma clase de totalitarismos perecieron autores como el japonés Takiji Kobayashi o, en épocas posteriores, artistas como Gao Xingjian tuvieron que dejar la China comunista, por no hablar de los escritores bajo el yugo islamista radical.

En nuestro país, poetas como Lorca o Miguel Hernández cayeron bajo el águila franquista, que expulsó de su nido a toda una generación de escritores. Los exiliados contribuyeron a la expresión literaria en otros lugares, sobre todo en América Latina, donde más tarde también iban a sufrir, un golpe militar tras otro, los propios autores hispanoamericanos: entre tantos, Neruda apenas fue capaz de sobrevivir a Allende y Rodolfo Walsh de evitar las balas ultraderechistas. Cabrera Infante, apartado de Cuba por el régimen de Castro, escribió en un artículo que “la nostalgia, como el exilio, mata”. Lo decía en 2002, en la revista Letras Libres, a propósito de Joseph Roth, de Stefan Zweig y de decenas de escritores prodigiosos que tuvieron que dejar su país (aquella patria desmantelada que fue el imperio austrohúngaro) para acarrear consigo una carga insoportable de vacío. Mientras

huía de los nazis, el gran Walter Benjamin no se dio tiempo a sí mismo para esa melancólica agonía y murió en Portbou en 1940, al otro lado de la misma frontera que cruzó Antonio Machado, también huyendo del horror para morir en Collioure. Nunca como en aquellos años la literatura fue un paraguas tan frágil para resistir las tempestades de la ignorancia y el odio.

Sin embargo, salvo casos como el español y hasta su rebrote de los 70 en el Cono Sur, la pesadilla fascista (que también en Italia causó estragos, como sabrían Cesare Pavese y tantos otros) tuvo en Europa fecha de caducidad, mientras que el rodillo soviético prevaleció, alimentado por la Guerra Fría (del otro bando, conviene no olvidar la “caza de brujas” en los EE.UU.). Durante décadas, autores tras el telón de acero vivieron un acoso constante. Sándor Márai o Bohumil Hrabal son sólo dos ejemplos. Con todo, sería en la URSS donde la tragedia silenciosa cobraría dimensiones casi bíblicas. Pocos casos tan sobrecogedores como el de Anna Ajmátova. Y pocos testimonios tan lúcidos y desgarradores de la barbarie ideológica como Archipiélago Gulag, de Aleksander Solzhenitsyn. Viktor Shklovski, Boris Pasternak, Vasili Aksiónov, la nómina es extensa y abarca varias décadas, aunque fue en las primeras cuando la Revolución castigó con mayor virulencia el talento y la disidencia.

La tormenta que destruyó los tejados de los artistas bajo la nube de Stalin se resume en la página 66 de La mentalidad soviética, el libro en el que Isaiah Berlin da cuenta de sus reflexiones y encuentros con escritores rusos durante los años cuarenta: “Unos se amoldan a nichos seguros porque creen en los preceptos soviéticos. Otros se aplican en calcular cuánto pueden ceder a las demandas de propaganda del Estado prestando sumo cuidado en no ofender y dándose por satisfechos con poder vivir y trabajar sin recompensa ni reconocimiento”. En la estela de los segundos conmueve especialmente la historia de Mijaíl Bulgákov. Cometió un pecado: “No escribo sobre campesinos porque

no me gusta el campo, y no escribo sobre obreros porque no conozco su mundo”.

Peligrosamente burgués, Bulgákov escribió Corazón de perro, una queja, en clave de ciencia-ficción grotesca, contra la obligación de compartir casa con obreros que, por la falta de viviendas, acució Moscú con el éxodo campesino. Mordaz y confiado, durante los años veinte Bulgákov cavó su propia sepultura con obras teatrales y relatos cada vez más cáusticos con el idealismo soviético. Hasta que el propio Stalin le prohibió seguir publicando o representando sus obras y también salir del país. Podía escribir, podía vivir, pero estaba enterrado.

Con Bulgákov jugó Stalin un tira y afloja especialmente espantoso, puesto que su obra teatral La guardia blanca tenía el dudoso honor de ser una de las favoritas del dictador.

“Va usted a hablar con el Camarada Stalin”, dijo una voz telefónica en mitad de la noche.

Bulgákov había pedido personalmente a Stalin que le permitiera abandonar la URSS. La carta decía algo así como “puesto que tengo la desgracia de no servir a la causa, de escribir libros y dramas que hacen flaco favor a nuestro gran proyecto, le suplico que me deje abandonar el país. No quiero jugar, jamás, en nuestra contra”. Escribiría más tarde en su diario que la voz de Stalin sonó benevolente. Le preguntó si estaba seguro de que quería salir del país. Acobardado, desconfiado, Bulgákov le respondió que no.

Se arrepentiría en el acto de su flaqueza, y pasaría el resto de sus días como empleado de tercera en pequeños teatros moscovitas.

Su obra, siempre tras el telón. El maestro y Margarita, una novela en la que el demonio aparece en Moscú y pone patas arriba la Revolución, es la más conocida. En ella, una frase resulta paradigmática de los escritores destruidos por la censura: “los manuscritos no arden”. Para demostrarlo, nuevos relatos de este maestro han aparecido en nuestro país: los de Notas en los puños (acompañados del drama Iván Vasílievich) en la editorial Alfabia; la colección Salmo y otros cuentos inéditos, reunidos por Nevsky Prospects; y

Corazón de perro y La Isla Púrpura, en un volumen de Galaxia Guttenberg que incluye partes de su diario y de su carta a Stalin. La Historia “absuelve” a los verdaderos artistas y no, como auguraba para sí mismo Adolf Hitler en su infame Mein Kampf, a los criminales.

El paso de los años termina por convertirse en el verdadero paraguas para la obra de los escritores que murieron ahogados por el diluvio de las dictaduras. Pero hoy, en este tiempo de tibieza y autocensura, bajo este régimen global solapado en el que la literatura parece amordazada por lo políticamente correcto (los biempensantes se han convertido en los nuevos jueces supremos, que pontifican si leer a Céline o a Hamsun es o no de mauvais ton), cabe preguntarse dónde quedan aquellos escritores audaces, dónde su compromiso con la verdadera libertad de pensamiento. Solzhenitsyn, una vez fuera de la URSS, criticaría también los desmanes del capitalismo. Y es que hoy, ante esta producción editorial en serie con aroma de hamburguesa y pollo frito, ante este recetario sin ideas y de menú infantil, bajo la nueva esvástica del código de barras, toca cuestionarse más que nunca contra qué tormenta deben abrir los escritores su paraguas, dónde hacen ahora lluvia al decir lluvia, cuándo vuelven de veras a hacer vida al decir literatura.

I remember that I took her to the cemetery one time and she said that no one had ever taken her to a grave on a date. I told her that I was so happy that I wanted to join a cult and she said that I made death so much fun that he wanted to live with me for hundreds of years. It was great.

But then we started to drink too much and get into fights until I decided that lust and jealousy are pretty much the same emotion – the way that whiskey in a bottle is pretty much the same as whiskey vomited into a toilet, aside from the stomach mucus.

I told her one time that fire-dancers and onion rings and documentaries about the Kingdom implosion were the only thing that I really cared about. I told her that there was always a good mosh pit when I was depressed and that I didn’t need her. I told her those awful things.

Damn you, she said to me in a soft voice We had a conversation like that one evening walking down Torrent de l’Olla to a surprise party. We had come up with all kinds of ideas, saying that to properly throw a surprise party you had to sneak up on the place so that no one in the whole town knew what was going on. We had crawled down parts of sidewalks and hid behind cars and ran in the streets. It was great. It was cold outside so we swapped coats and pretended we were in Edinburgh. She was carrying a bag of broccoli that she said she was going to use to make tea. There was a dirty piece of cardboard blowing around on the ground with the handwritten words “Be generous – need help before I disappear.”

Then she stopped right in the middle of the road.

“Surprise parties are frightening,” she said. “I mean what if you get home and you have something important to do. What if you have to use the toilet? I mean really.”

“Toilet away. A round of toilets on the house. I think being comfortable under strange conditions is a sign of maturity.”

“I’m being serious,” she said. “You know, I have a cousin who was diagnosed with a heart condition when she was in her teens.

She has a palpitating heart and they told her that she wouldn’t live long. So she always makes a point of planning everything out and thinking about things in advance.

She likes looking forward to good things.

She likes thinking about them before they happen. This year she gave my nephew, who is one, a full-sized baseball mitt. A full sized baseball mitt so that he can play ball with it when he is older. Even if she’s not around. And you know, a surprise party is the exact opposite of this.”

“That’s really sad,” I said. “That’s worse than an uncomfortable toilet. That’s like your grandfather. Didn’t your grandfather have some kind of disease?”

“That’s right,” she said. “My grandfather came home from work one day - fortunately there wasn’t a surprise party going on because he felt awful. He felt terrible. And it turns out that he had an aneurism. He had to go to five doctors in one day because no one knew what was wrong with him. The doctors didn’t even know.”

“The doctors didn’t know that your grandfather had an aneurism?”

This was big point for me because I’m your average neurotic guy and get worked up about dying. I’m frightened of the usual things – you know, airplanes, cars, bridges, commercial radio.

and just at the right moment pulls up its hooves, all for the courtesy of allowing a fence to pass under. I remembered that combination of delicacy and furious effort that just didn’t exist anywhere in the world.

I couldn’t move my hands when I first met her. I liked her a lot.

“Well, the truth is,” she said to me, “that my grandfather and his wife met each other under strange circumstances. The truth is that my grandfather met his wife when she was his sister-in-law. My grandfather ran off with my grandmother’s sister.”

“Your grandfather ran off with your grandmother’s sister?” I asked her. “That’s

“I hope they were living in sin,” I said.

“Living is sin is ideal. Just last week I called home and told my father that damnation is probably a bonding experience anyway.”

And saying this to her reminded me of the time that I called home and told my little brother that I was dating a witch and his exact reply was “Boy! Are you desperate?” I told him that I was very desperate for her. I remember her eyes when she wore blue color on her lashes so that she looked like an insect. I remember the weightless up-reach of her eyes. They reminded me of the spectacle of a horse jumping where the animal lifts its enormous frame, the nestled rider,

so fucked up it sounds Southern. And you say that the sister-in-law/wife is the one who saved him from his aneurism? Wow, that’s pretty incredible – they must’ve really been in love.”

“No, I think he just wanted to sleep with her. I think my grandfather was a whore,” she said.

“Baby, whores are writers who work in Los Angeles,” I said. “Everybody knows that.

This man just ran off with his sister-in-law. I mean people don’t actually make it a point to hurt their loved ones. They must’ve had really strong feelings for each other.”

“No, I think he just wanted to fuck her.”

She said that loudly and there was no mistaking that the emphasis was on the “fuck”.

“I mean,” she said, “I’m sure he fell in love with her after she saved him from an awful death when nobody in the family would even talk to him. I’m sure he had some pretty strong feelings then.”

And I looked at her and it was a strange moment because she was looking at me and her pupils were sort of vibrating. It could have been a look of lust except I knew

she was angry. And this was difficult for me because I was used to being the manic one in this couple.

“Would you ever do anything like that to me?” she asked me.

There was a silence and I immediately thought of all the wrong things to say: not while you have such a nice figure, don’t introduce me to your sister, or don’t introduce me to your mother.

Then I though of all the right things to say: sweetheart, people only leave a relationship when there is something wrong, two people can fall in love with each other many times in one lifetime, or I don’t know…let’s fall asleep together.

And you know, I wanted to say something like this. I wanted to give her that. But I didn’t feel like lying to her. I mean, I had already slept with her. The thing that stood out the strongest in my thoughts was the memory of the time we were at the Verdi Park movie theater. I had a plastic bag of chocolates that I was eating so fast I might as well have been snorting them – there were little explosions of light everywhere I looked from the sugar in my brain. I remember that she was sitting next to me. She was smiling and looking away. She had her dark hair piled up on her head so nice. Her eyebrows were raised and I could almost feel the heat coming off of her neck. I remembered all the things that we had done together. I remembered the time she helped me move. I remembered that she lent me her credit card. I remembered the draw of her legs, the darkness of her thighs. I remembered her below me. I remembered touching her eyebrows. I remembered that she signed her letters, “Unavoidably.” I remembered trying to tell her that she was a good conversationalist by saying, “You’re good at parties,” and she said, “That doesn’t sound nice.” I had all of this in my mind as I sat there at the movie theater and she was looking off to one side and smiling and I looked off to the same side and realized at that exact moment that she was noticing another person, another man.

You know, jealousy is an awful invasion, a mix of betrayed vulnerability and arrogance. In that moment, I suddenly hated everyone, hated Gràcia, hated that cinema, hated the clunky glasses and white-rockerbelts that the people in the theater wore, hated Barcelona, hated the waves in sea. I got up and got a beer out of the vending machine without saying a word. It seemed like a reasonable thing to do.

And I thought about that as I stood there on Torrent de l’Olla Street with her looking at me, her angry eyes wanting an answer.

Then I said, “Most couples don’t even touch each other after a while. Don’t even touch.”

She looked at me and said, “That’s not true. That’s not true at all. I know plenty of couples who are very affectionate.”

And I told her I agreed with her. I told her I agreed with her, but I didn’t mean it. I only agreed with her because I didn’t want to have to tell her a sad story.

Els eixos de la terra

by Josep Maria Miró La força i la ràbia de la natura és un espectacle esfereïdor. Un terratrèmol de 8,9 graus en l’escala Richter al Japó que acaba desencadenant un tsunami al Pacífic, arrossegant fins i tot l’inimaginable i deixant nombroses pèrdues humanes i físiques.

Els experts asseguren que la catàstrofe desplaçarà uns deu centímetres els eixos de la terra.

Mentre observo les imatges i escolto o llegeixo les notícies amb certa consternació, se m’hi suma una curiositat, una coincidència. Estic a pocs dies d’estrenar al Teatre Nacional de Catalunya el meu darrer text Gang Bang (Obert fins a l’hora de l’Àngelus). A l’obra, que transcorre en un local de sexe, la nit prèvia de la visita del sant Pare a Barcelona, un dels personatges, una particular dona de fer feines visionària, alerta els clients, els diu que la terra està donant avisos de grans canvis i que els seus eixos es van desplaçant mica a mica.

Tot això, assegura, tindrà nombrosos efectes sobre l’espai i també la realitat socioeco-

nòmica. Durant uns segons l’escolto però ningú li fa cas. Tots estan massa entretinguts en donar plaer al cos, i l’esforç individual i col·lectiu que comportaria preocupar-se per l’equilibri dels eixos de la terra seria massa gran. La bacanal contínua mentre el món també es continua esqueixant: des de l’espai físic i natural fins al moral, social i polític.

Japó és lluny de Barcelona però cada dia ens arriben de qualsevol racó del món imatges i notícies esfereïdores: la guerra civil a Llíbia; la pèrdua de llibertats a la Xina; la impunitat política a Itàlia; l’església i els seus nombrosos i successius escàndols, alguns relacionats amb el seu bé més preuat “la infància”; la corrupció política a casa nostra i arreu... La llista és llarga. Tots la coneixem, o almenys hi hem passat o parat atenció en algun moment, encara que sigui de puntetes.

A pocs dies d’estrenar, la coincidència argumental d’un espai sexual i la visita del cap del vaticà a Barcelona, ha fet saltar

algunes crítiques sobre l’obra. Crítiques i, fins i tot, demandes de la seva retirada.

Aquestes opinions arriben sense haver-se estrenat i sense conèixer-la. Gang Bang és una obra que parla sobre un món en crisi, en el que trontollen valors i pilars. El vehicle per parlar-ne és un espai d’unes característiques i finalitats molt concretes. El local “La Llum”, que actua com un personatge més, i unes circumstàncies i un temps, la d’una celebració a la ciutat, on es reafirmen uns valors que han amarat la nostra moral i pensament durant segles. Alguns voldran veure-hi una altra cosa, quedar-se amb l’anècdota. El teatre ha de mostrar mirades diverses i provocar també vàries lectures.

A Gang Bang ningú escolta Anna, aquesta particular dona de fer feines. En un món global i on l’accés a la informació és constant, l’efecte que té sobre nosaltres, els individus que hi habitem, sembla ser molt baix. Les notícies ens arriben amb la mateixa facilitat que les assimilem i les descartem. Potser aquesta dona de fer

feines té raó i el món s’està trencant, física, humana, moral i socialment sense que fem res al respecte. Tot segueix com si res.

Potser si no ens aturem un segon, al final serà difícil trobar un bon paraigües on aixoplugar-se, sense sortir-ne massa esquitxat.

Recuerdo que al final de cada beso largo venía uno corto que me desvelaba de la profunda ensoñación provocada por el frío pinchazo de su lengua de aguja. Recuerdo nuestras escapadas al pantano donde dábamos de fumar a los sapos cigarrillos de corte Coronas y estallábamos en carcajadas. Recuerdo sus ojos de bruja la tarde que tragamos las ácidas pastillas rojas con el logo de Apple, después follamos con los sentidos adulterados. No olvido sus ojos verdes de Ágraba. Lo pasábamos bien juntos. Después de los banquetes de perdices volvíamos a casa dando tumbos, ebrios, buscando las migas de pan en esta ciudad diseñada por Dédalo. Cuando llovía girábamos los paraguas entre nuestras manos, provocando más lluvia, en más direcciones, mientras tarareábamos las canciones de Mary Poppins.

Torturábamos a los trillizos que teníamos por vecinos escondiéndoles el balón o, con los altavoces estratégicamente situados al otro lado de sus habitaciones, pinchábamos música tecno a altas horas de la madrugada, hasta que ellos no supieron contestar de un modo adulto y dejaron tres mojones en nuestro felpudo. Aquellos trillizos

eran unos cerdos.

Pero pasó. Todo pasó, y ella se había ido. Y yo no hice más que compadecerme de mí mismo, recordar el pasado y mirar las estanterías vacías de libros de hechizos… o acariciar el zapato que olvidó en la mudanza, único objeto material que, quiero creer, dejó en nuestra pequeña mazmorra como souvenir. Aún lo conservo como un tesoro.

Nuestra primera cita fue en el baile de carnaval. Al salir a la calle nos sorprendió la brusca y violenta caída de copos de blanca nieve.

Nos cubrimos brevemente con nuestros ropajes: deshice el nudo que aguantaba las orejeras de mi gorra de cazador mientras ella se resguardaba bajo la roja capucha de su plumón. En ese momento supe que estábamos hechos el uno para el otro: yo tenía la piel suave y blanda, ella los colmillos afilados.

Discuto con un amigo la conveniencia de ejecutar cambios en la plaza Rovira para que el digno señor de bronce tenga un compañero de charla. El espacio lo propicia. Enrique Vila-Matas habló de sus constantes dualismos, perfectos salvo por la omisión de otra escultura que equilibre la balanza y fulmine la soledad del hombre, pasto de locos y palomas, que ganó el proyecto de reforma del Eixample hace ya más de 150 años. Rovira no dice ni por ahí te pudras, es silencioso e ignora la realidad adyacente a sus dominios, repleta de pequeñas trampas que suelen pasar inadvertidas hasta que la repetición ejerce su maléfico influjo y sitúa en el mapa rarezas que claman atención en su misterio.

Abandonamos las farolas, dejamos atrás la droguería del crimen de Carmen Broto y saludamos al invisible Marsé, omnipresente en el espacio, como si el lugar fuera suyo y nosotros unos simples peleles, peones de un tablero, marionetas que para dar con la libertad deben tejer redes propias, ganancia de pescadores que sólo intentan entender su entorno.

El barco se para cada noche, poco antes del abrazo con Morfeo, en Providència 77, una fachada lúgubre que intriga a mi amigo desde hace más de medio siglo. El edificio tiene una concepción arquitectónica sobria, casi racionalista, con ventanas sin adornos que emanan pavor por sus barrotes. La geometría proporcionada del asunto, aséptico en las paredes, daría para muchas elucubraciones, pero lo importante está en el acceso. Ya saben. Las puertas de los inmue-

bles suelen tener un interfono. El clásico posibilita contactar con los residentes llamando a su piso. En el caso de la anónima mansión que centra nuestras pesquisas sólo hay un timbre general que incita a sospechar la existencia de un portero en el interior, amo de llaves del palacio donde el común de los mortales tiene vetada la entrada al portal marrón ardilla con un pomo dorado que nadie franquea, al menos a la vista de los demás. Ese punto apabulla. ¿Quién vive en Providència 77? Cuando el Papa de Roma visitó Babilonia colgaban banderas vaticanas. Por lo tanto, ya sabemos que alguno de los habitantes de la casa cree en el Dios católico con ardorosa devoción. ¿Y qué? Podríamos pasarnos días enteros vigilando.

Nuestra desesperación crecería por el vacío absoluto y la impotencia de la nada. Unos opinan que la clave está en una salida trasera oculta a nuestros ojos.

Otros comentan que es una residencia religiosa que lleva en el más profundo de los secretos sus actividades. ¿Una secta? ¿Una conspiración judeo-masónica? ¿Un selecto club de albañiles ayurvédicos? ¿Un prostíbulo enmascarado? ¿El refugio de Batman? Emoción, intriga, dolor de barriga.

Este texto es un esbozo de investigación. En ningún momento pretendo descifrar la verdad porque carezco de información para acometer el reto. A veces me paro en el badulake que está enfrente y compro un Aquarius, la bebida de los campeones. Seguro que el humilde pakistaní, entregado propietario de su negocio, conoce datos de vital trascendencia para aclarar el entuer-

to de esos imponentes muros que desafían la rutinaria dinámica de la ciudad, donde la mayoría de individuos nacen, crecen, se reproducen y mueren en la normalidad de unas habitaciones que a nadie preocupan por carecer de un destello que las diferencie, almas contentas, o resignadas, que desarrollan sus tareas cotidianas con la forzosa naturalidad que implica empaparse de aire contaminado y mezclarse en el bullicioso marasmo urbano.

El método para averiguar el enigma es simple. Basta con tener conocidos que se dediquen a la abogacía o tengan contactos en el registro de la propiedad, accesible para todo hijo de vecino que quiera esforzarse y acudir a consultar planos. No lo hago porque seguramente quiero sentirme, las frustraciones infantiles son lo peor, un Sherlock Holmes a la catalana y especular con el extraño bloque del privilegio.

Providència 77 es una metáfora de nuestra época, donde los poderosos actúan en la superficie sin ser atisbados por ojos que padecen la miseria de cruzar los brazos al no poder atentar directamente contra los cínicos que impulsan la mierda que siempre más impregna nuestras carnes.

Ellos están entre nosotros y marcan sus cartas con símbolos, fronteras impenetrables al alcance de una mano que, sin embargo, acata la prohibición de no tocar la fruta prohibida en un mundo que nos transforma en visitantes de un museo que desmiente la igualdad.

It rained Saturday. It is supposed to rain Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It’s okay. It’s spring. If April showers are substituted for March ones, no big deal. But on the fine and aptly named Sunday when this was written, the clouds parted for 12 hours and the day was precious. Barcelona is greener. Light lasts longer. Clothing layers are fewer. While we might have a few more days (possibly weeks) of rainy spring ahead, we are all already looking over the greyish horizon to long parc strolls, terrace cervezas, and, yes, even seaside sunbathing.

Get a head start. Here’s some help.

The crunch of gravel. The thud of the ball. The thud of the other ball. The thud of the other ball. We’ve all seen petanca happening around Barna. You’ve probably walked by it and smiled to yourself once or twice. Well, the next time it’s nice out and you have no fucking clue what to do, get your ass to Arc de Triomf and get into the grandstands. Sit along the pitch on the raised beds of grass watching this simple yet skillful game and harken back to the days of horseshoes, croquet, knitting and other pre-extreme sports. No, in all seriousness, this is an awesome way to while away an hour.

Watch the old-timers in their salsa. Listen to them heckle and, for lack of a better term, talk shit in catalá, castellano, andaluz, y tó.

If Ciutadella sounds nice but you want a cortado with your sol instead of the grass and you’re not terribly interested in fighting tourists and pigeons for a bit of peace and quiet, head up two short blocks to Parc del Nord, the city’s loveliest most underrated park. There sits a little xiringuito just like any other ‘guito with one exception, it’s normally empty (read: peaceful, sunny and awesome). Approach the counter and marvel at the utter lack of products on the shelves, then order something simple like that cortado you were dreaming of. Instead of stocking snacks for humans, the owners have a large fish bowl filled with balls for doggies (1,50€), taking advantage of the fact that Parc del Nord is the unofficial Dogs Run Wild park. Also, hit it up during the week and take advantage of the free Barcelona wifi. It’s an awesome place to work for an hour. The bad news? Not open on Sundays.

We’ve listed Antic Teatre before, but it’s been four years since that and, besides, this time we’re listing the terrace, not the teatre. This outdoor bastion for beer and buen rollo is probably without rival in the category Biggest and Best Terrace in the City Center. If you have a place in mind that can top it, please email us. The Antic Teatre’s terrace is a two-tiered monster tucked away in La Ribera. The lower level sports a dirt floor and tables are arranged around a large central tree (AWESOME!). The upper terrace is terracotta tiled and not exactly small. It also has bombas de calor for chilly nights and an extendable/retractable roof for those pesky little drizzles we mentioned in the intro. Beers are affordable, people are nice (don’t leave your ciggies on the table or you’ll bum them all out before the night is through) and the lighting is perfect.

A lot of people complain that Barcelona isn’t green enough.

While we can always get behind more green, we’re also tempted to tell those people to get off their asses and leave the Raval. Pack up your bocadillo, little ravalero, and head to Guinardó, where there’s an amazing hill with a goddamn forest on top of it! ¡Olé! No matter your point of entry you’ll soon find yourself immersed in a Mediterranean forest full of pine, cactus and other succulents, wildflowers, vines, fruit trees and more. Climb up and around and enjoy epic views over Barcelona and fresh air (if done after a rainy day). Climb a little higher still and discover the stuff that dreams are made of – a two-street pueblo sitting atop this forest hill in the middle of BCN. And, as if that weren’t enough, go all the way to the top, to rest on (and explore) the Turo de la Rovira, an old bunker and anti-aircraft missile battery used during the Spanish Civil War.

We’ve been too busy breakfasting here to list the place, but the time has come. Federal Café is toted as a slice of New South Wales in Barcelona. Whatever it’s reminiscent of, we’re fully on board. Walk in and you’re met with a large wooden table, communal style, where couples, strangers and friends come together over their cafes, periódicos y desayunos. The front windows open completely, creating small tables for one or two that straddle indoors and out, restaurant and street. Up a level there are smaller tables of different types and up yet another level, a terrace that is so charming you may never get the chance to sit there (it’s often full). Five small tables are surrounded by green hedges on this little rooftop. On huge steps up to nowhere sit more plants, herbs, etc. Sit under the sun and lime tree and sip their great coffee, try bruschettas deliciosas (4,80€), huevos de corral revueltos with all types of lovely ingredients (7,50€), y mucho más. The cupcakes, while pricey, are the bomb.

08.03 – 22.03 Theater / Wood Painting As director at the Malmö Municipal Theater, Ingmar Bergman conducted acting classes for the members of the company. Seeking a short play to show off the talents of his ten students but unable to find a suitable one, Bergman wrote, as a mere exercise, the one-act play Wood Painting that became the inspiration for one of his most famous films, The Seventh Seal. The plague, the game between the jester and Death, and the dance of death, all appear in the original play, which has never been published in Spain. Italian director Massimiliano Caprara has assembled an international group of actors to perform “Pintura Sobre Tabla” translated by Cèsar Corrales at La Cova until March 22nd.

Weekly on Sundays Okupa / street performance cabaret Imagine an invitation to an abandoned warehouse to see a street performers’ cabaret with a 1920s Parisian air. Imagine a San Pedro cactus drink exorcism, a man impregnated by a shark made out of a pillow, jugglers, French girls chanting poetry while rolling in (and eating) plastic, balancing acts with crystal balls, naked monks and a fake Cupid (the charming Andalusian, your host for the night) shooting arrows at the audience. You get the idea. The fine people putting this on can be found either in their casa, where they host an array of workshops and other cultural activities, or at Parque Ciutadella practicing their act in the grass. Vegetarian food, 1-euro beers and refreshments are available.

Arrive early or you might not get a chair and have to settle for the concrete floor.

24.03 – 17.04 Theater / Gang Bang This play has been chosen to participate in the TNC’s T6 program, which gives 6 young playwrights a big stage and the exposure that goes along with it. The premise to this particular show goes así: A papal visit to BCN coincides with the 18th birthday of the gay protagonist. To celebrate, the young homo goes to a gay sex sauna to offer himself up to whomever will have him, similar to the Eucharist. The sauna is at complete capacity, overrun with horny swords, because, you know, the pope is in town. The boy’s father goes to the sauna in search of his lost lamb, and... We don’t know how it ends, but we know it begins with some dude in a sling getting fisted. The conservative press and vocal religious leaders and followers are, you could say, concerned.

Public money for this abomination? Not just gay sex, but gay sex + the pope + religious symbolism in a sex sauna with fistings and gang bangs? God bless freedom of expression.

24.03 – 26.03 Literature / Kosmopolis “We can sin by omission: and I believe this is the most serious sin. […] In many cases what I have not done weighs on me more than what I have”, says Claudio Magris, one of the many extraordinary guest speakers that have been summoned to this year’s international literature festival, Kosmopolis 2011. This author of many works of fiction, editorialist at Corriere della Sera and professor of German literature in Trieste will discuss the process of literary creation with Josep Ramoneda on Friday 25th at 19:30h. But Magris is only the cherry on a delicious literature cake filled with rich discussions on digital, mobile, and social publishing, talks about the spoken word scene in the UK, the state of Berlin’s Zebra Festival, documentaries on Rock ‘n’ Roll Poets, poetry slams and Twitterature. 02.04 Guerra Civil / Pillow Fight BCN Today, parece ser, is International I Smack the Shit Out of Fellow Urban Citizens Day (ISSOFUCD). So why not take advantage and beat them with something limp and soft, like a pillow. San Francisco is known as the worldwide leader in dreamy lashings, with more than 5,000 people turning up for the fight. Barcelona, fortunately, has not yet reached its full potential. The Youtube video from the 2009 BCN fight is a bit sad. There were very few, but they fought hard. 2010 was better. But now is the time to show the world how we Barcelonins take out our civic passive aggression and sexual frustrations on one another. May all our ex’s and one-night-stands, our favourite funcionarios, our negligent neighbours, and our friends and enemies show up (and well-armed at that). The only rules? Monthly Film / Phenomena Experience Thanks to Phenomena Experience, we Barcelonins of all shapes, colors and nationalities can come together en masse to watch the original versions of films that shaped our childhoods. 06.04 Concert / bcn216 x Robert Gerhard The composer Robert Gerhard, known commonly outside of Spain as Roberto Gerhard, was born in Valls, near Tarragona, to a German-Swiss father and an Alsatian mother. Nonetheless, Robert embraced his catalanisme and Catalunya has certainly embraced him. He was eventually forced to leave Catalunya in 1939, as his position as musical adviser to the Minister of Fine Arts in the Catalan Government and his Republican sensibilities put him on Franco’s radar. The Auditori and resident orchestra bcn216 are dedicating tonight to Gerhard’s compositions. bcn216 is an experimental group of talented and mostly local musicians that have participated and collaborated with the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, SÓNAR, MACBA, the CCCB, Teatre Lliure and others.

Tickets for these 60 minutes of classical Catalan culture are free, but you have to go pick them up.

07.04 – 17.04 Exhibition / Reskate There’s a dangerous rift running through Barna’s society.

While some folks still struggle with basic concepts of recycling – throwing plastic bottles in the brown, apple-branded containers – others take the salvaging of discarded objects to ever-higher spheres, turning it into an artistic statement. The collective Nube belongs to the latter group and collects, à la DrapArt, out of use and broken skateboards to cut out new minilongs that are handed over to local illustrators, so called “reskatadores” who paint them as they please. The shiny new and colorful boards can either be used to look extracool when skateboarding around town or hung on the wall and treated as precious l’art pour l’art objects.

15.04 Rock ’n’ Roll / New York Dolls Don’t freak out about the price tag and think a minute about who the New York Dolls really are. This group started hard rock and punk before those were even terms. They are the missing link between The Rolling Stones, The Stooges, Bowie and the punk and hard rock that came into the mainstream 10 years later. They took Mick Jagger’s sexual androgyny to a higher level, and from looking at early photos you might give them almost all of the credit for the big hair rocked way later

by White Snake, Def Leppard, GN’R. Their two studio albums, while not big hits at the time, have never gone out of print and have influenced rock ‘n’ roll in incalculable ways. Many of the original members of the group have died over the years, through tough times, break ups and solo-career offshoots, but this is still a chance, and perhaps our last one, to see some of the real New York Dolls rock the fuck out.

Back then, Dutch director Sonia Herman Dolz considered this moment important enough to make a documentary. This play is loosely based on said documentary and has been a huge success at the 2010 Avignon Festival. The cast is made up of old stars of the cross-dressing variety. The play is highly influenced by the actors, who themselves cross the bridge between male and female identity on a daily basis.

Serían las cinco de la tarde y seguía con sueño, se ve que aún no me había recuperado del fin de semana anterior. Es por esto que mi mejor opción fue repasar los conciertos de este mes que harán que siga con mi turbada vida en Barcelona.

Pero a los dos minutos ya estaba despierto e indignado al comprobar que el nuevo grupo de Liam Gallager solamente dará un concierto en España y que además no será en BCN. Aun así, pude tranquilizarme al comprobar que este mes hay buen cartel.

Empezando en el Apolo, donde podremos ver a White Lies con su rock bailable (aunque solamente sea moviendo el vaso desde la barra). Por la misma sala pasará el inconfundible Pau Riba que aunque no nos deje actuaciones como la mítica del Canet Rock, sabrá como imponer su repertorio.

Pero el concierto más esperado (al menos para este humilde pseudomúsico) será el de los mods BRIGHTON 64, “Mods, mods, we are the mods!!”.

Pasando por el Palau de la Música podréis ver a los Standstill presentando su más que vitoreado Adelante Bonaparte. En el mismo recinto y en días diferentes podremos oír propuestas más intimistas como las que presentaran Ismael Serrano o Nacho Vegas, dos de las voces más especiales del panorama nacional.

Recomendamos también la programación de la sala Bikini donde nos encontraremos con el indie de Feeder y No Age, así como rock en catalán de la mano d’El Petit de Cal Eril y el inconfundible Ivan Ferreiro. ¿Para cuándo una reunión de Los Piratas?

Estos son los conciertos que recomendamos y que nos hacen pensar que el rock no estaba muerto (jódete Lenny) que estaba de parranda.

It’s time for a late winter pick-me-up. I don’t know why theaters do this, but it seems like March films always match the weather in their dreariness. Drama, drama, romance, drama...I’m over it. I want to laugh and pretend like I’m frolicking naked in a field full of buttercups and make beer shoot out my nose. As disgusting as that is, you get the gist. Give me something funny or I’ll scream.

As previously mentioned, the theaters are not going to help you, and anyway they cost too much. Go hit up a great video place like Papaya Verde, Video Instan, or your local library and see if you can’t get your hands on: Bottle Rocket, Swingers, Napoleon Dynamite, My Blue Heaven, La Boum, Chungking Express, The Graduate, Dr. Strangelove, Airplane!, Raising Arizona, PeeWee’s Big Adventure, Fletch, The Big Lebowski, Police Story, Rocky Horror, Annie Hall, Sherman’s March, Being John Malcovich, Delicatessen, Harold and Maude, Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man, Small Change, Life of Brian, Clueless, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Ghostbusters, Amarcord, The Pink Panther, Duck Soup, A Fish Called Wanda, Flesh Gordon, Withnail and I, Shaun of the Dead, David Holzman’s Diary, Dancing Outlaw, Tillie’s Punctured Romance, Le Divorce (laughing at, not with), Best in Show, Beetlejuice, Rock ‘n Roll High School, and The Sting.

When you finish with those we’ll talk again. There’s also an unfunny subgenre of comedies I call “not funny” that have been popularized by major studios and often star ex-comedians turned producers/directors who don’t want to give up the makeup trailer. Of these we will talk on another occasion. I’m coming for you, Stiller.

Al hilo de los tintes conceptuales a los que nos referíamos antes, repetición-espacio-tiempo y percepción bajo el manto casero se reúnen en la exposición que, hasta el 25 de marzo, Ainara Elgoibar realiza en el centro Komando Kultura Kontemporanea Barcelona.

Más carnal pero no por ello menos reflexivo, el Premio Nobel de Literatura Gao Xingjian en la Galería Senda, desde el 31 de marzo. Pinturas de trazo ligero en la memoria de una piel oscura y desgastada donde la melanina está inyectada a golpe de tinta china corrosiva.

Volumen, movimiento, presente congelado y el cutis noble pero frío del cobre en las esculturas de Instantáneas, título que da nombre a la exhibición de Pere Sala en la Galería Víctor Lope, hasta el 28 de mayo.

Como sugerencia virtual del mes, y haciendo humilde uso de la letra deleuziana, bloques de movimiento-duración, sobre una pantalla de cuero y electrónica, proyectados por 2 de los arquitectos pioneros en el lenguaje video artístico desde los años 60: Steina and Woody Vasulka. Por fin podemos dar la bienvenida a la primavera, celebrar el día mundial del teatro y el día de la mujer trabajadora.

Por ello y empezando por el mensaje que nos ha dejado la Dra. Jessica A. Kaahwa de Uganda para el Día Mundial del Teatro, me gustaría remarcar que “el teatro es una herramienta universal para el diálogo, la transformación social y la reforma”.

Con él disfrutamos, conocemos otros puntos de vista y reflexionamos, y seguro que más de una reflexión produce algún cambio, así que ¡os animo a todos a difundir este poderoso arte! Yo empezaré por recomendaros una visita al Poble Espanyol donde se realiza del 18 al 27 de marzo el TOT Festival, donde hay lugar para todo, desde títeres, pasando por el teatro de objetos, hasta hip hop. Hay muchos espectáculos para elegir, pero sobre todo me ha llamado la atención The Earth and The Universe, un espectáculo mágico y de gran belleza visual de la Compañía “Yase Tamam Group” de Irán. En segundo lugar, y siguiendo con los festivales, no os podéis perder el LP Ex-Festival de Danza que se lleva a cabo hasta el 27 de marzo en diferentes espacios de Barcelona. Uno de los espectáculos programados es la IV edición de Sobrenatural, un ciclo virtual que nos ofrece la proyección de 5 video creaciones y un fórum con los mismos creadores. Y por último, y haciendo gala a la primera mujer que se atrevió a ponerse una nariz roja en la escena teatral de Cataluña, podréis ver el viernes 25 de marzo a las 20.30 en La Cuina del Centre de Cultura de Dones Francesca Bonnemaison De Pe a Pa, el espectáculo de la “Payasa Pepa Plana”. ¡¡No os la perdáis!!

El barrio de Poble Nou y su constante pugna entre la preservación histórica, el plano cultural y el desarrollo

Érase una vez una sociedad en la cual fumar era un rasgo de distinción.

Fumaban los intelectuales y las estrellas de cine, fumaban los médicos y los grandes magnates, fumaban –a escondidas– las amas de casa y –con orgullo– los púberes a punto de cruzar el umbral de los eczemas adolescentes. Érase una vez un mundo aromatizado a consciencia con el éter del cáncer y sus nieblas artificiales. Érase una vez una encopetada oda al tabaco que difícilmente podría haber deducido su futuro cercano en los confines del vituperio institucional.

Antes fumar era sinónimo de cierto carácter (o de incierta falta del mismo); ahora simplemente es una maniobra más de adicciones políticamentes incorrectas y un síndrome de rutilantes prórrogas de una muerte a fascículos de la cual el fumador es el único y máximo responsable. Se empieza a fumar por muchos motivos: para matar el tiempo, para ser adultos extemporáneos, para aumentar los dividendos de la industria del vicio, para tener la excusa de hacer algo mientras se espera en la calle a alguien, para disponer un corolario sobre el café de la sobremesa, para disfrutar de un improductivo mareo cada mañana, para inocular en humo la violencia de la dialéctica, para preterir el fracaso del talento, para la sublimación del desencanto, para mistificar la improductividad o, simplemente, porque no se tiene nada mejor que hacer. Érase una vez una tradición que se convirtió en delito en un país en el cual el folclore es siempre la última moda por venir. España, y por extensión Barcelona (sin ánimo de ofender a nadie por la concomitancia entre ambos territorios), fueron durante algunos años un oasis de resistencia contra las huestes detractoras del tabaco. Su extraordinaria obstinación hacia las recomendaciones de un estado paternalista gozoso de administrarnos continuos decálogos de correcta ciudadanía hicieron que las amables sugerencias pasasen a ser ostensibles amonestaciones, y que dichas admoniciones pasasen a ser sentencias legislativas. Barcelona, y por extensión España, siempre se ha caracterizado por un sutil matiz: mientras que en el resto del mundo “fumar mata”, aquí simplemente “puede matar”. Y no porque el contexto determine la contingencia de los acontecimientos sino porque la verosimilitud de los riesgos aquí nunca nos ha importado demasiado, añadiendo a todo esto un sustrato marxista, es decir, desde premisas económicas. Aquí el tabaco, en vez de matar, pudiera hacerlo si se le antojase tal fechoría. Pero, ¿quién quiere asustarnos con sentencias lapidarias sacadas del Zaratustra si tales hebras potencialmente insalubres son una de las bases de nuestra pirámide económica y uno de los productos más reclamados por el turismo?

Pero esto era antes de la rutilante subida de precios que hace que un paquete de tabaco cueste lo mismo aquí que en Italia. Ya somos europeos, y no gracias al euro o gracias a un pupitre en Bruselas, sino gracias al encarecimiento del tabaco.

Uno de los ejemplos más claros es el espacio Niu, que recientemente celebró sus 5 años de existencia.

La noche del 1 de marzo fue bastante fría, pero eso no impidió que una multitud abarrotara dicho centro cultural para deleitarse con una muy sintética muestra de su trabajo. Entre el público asistente había artistas y simples mortales ávidos de formar parte de esta iniciativa tan novedosa.

El problema era que yo no conocía a nadie así que comencé a preguntar a los grupitos que fumaban un cigarrillo en la puerta o bebían cervezas enfrascados en animadas conversaciones. Y las respuestas prontamente comenzaron a salir a la luz.

Uno de los artistas invitados, apodado “Lord Checa”, valoró el rol de Niu afirmando que “este es un lugar que me gusta mucho porque me gusta hacer cosas y aquí se hacen constantemente, y cuenta con la peculiaridad de acoger tanto a artistas que viven de lo suyo, como a principiantes con buenas ideas”. Sergi Bueno, periodista y persona a cargo del espacio reconoció que “en Niu hay espacio para todos los que tengan un buen proyecto y ganas de llevarlo a cabo, sin importar su currículum”.

El tema económico suele ser un factor decisivo

para ralentizar la exposición de obras artísticas pero aquí gozan del privilegio de, además de ser acogidas, entregarles las condiciones técnicas básicas para el correcto desarrollo de los mismos sin cobrar ni un euro. “Esto provoca ciertos desequilibrios de calidad ya que hay proyectos con mucha fuerza, y otros más efímeros y circunstanciales”, pero aún así todos son recibidos con los brazos abiertos.

Tales características favorecen un ambiente propicio para la creación. “El ego del artista suele ser bastante grande en general, pero aquí veo que todos se quieren ayudar se critican y comparten experiencias para mejorar sus respectivos trabajos”, explicó Sergi

“Aquí los artistas no vienen a una noche de birra y cachondeo, sino a mostrar su arte. Si encima es una tarde guay mejor, pero lo principal es la obra”, puntualizó el joven director de Niu.

La invitación está hecha ahora depende de cada uno acercarse y tomarlo como propio.

El Fashiondeo en Barcelona Carlota, don’t call me jipster. call me modernicho.

by Manuel de Sousa Una nueva temporada (Marc en Nueva York, Vivienne en Londres, Karl en París, Miuccia en Milán), inagotable manantial de tendencias que año a año inunda los caudales de la industria textil y, por un lado, cubre de trapos a los que pretenciosamente acusan recibo de ser la imagen de la actualidad, los nichos ambulantes de la novedad, en fin, los jipsters que han pisado Berlín o Londres; y, por otro, a los que no les queda otra que taparse con prendas que más o menos tengan coherencia, sencillamente porque, aunque es aparentemente legal ir desnudo en Barcelona, hace algo de frío, y difícilmente la desnudez se pondrá en boga jamás y nunca, por cuestiones de clima y pudor. Hecho por el cual, la moda superflua, frívola, banal o no, jamás pasará de moda.

La escena local oscila entre tres vertientes: lo establecido, lo emergente y lo reciclable.

Incluso cuenta en parte con el auspicio del llamado Plan de Apoyo a la Moda Catalana,

iniciativa que ya en 2006 había sido impulsada por la Generalitat por medio de la Secretaría de Comercio y Turismo, cuyos frutos se han dejado ver en expediciones parisinas. No obstante, alejándonos del subsidio anecdótico institucional y del continuo afán de izar la bandera roja y amarilla (con franjas más refinadas), esta vez en los grandes centros de la industria del “Fashion”, no sin recordar la lamentable huida del Bread and Butter y su infame sustituto, pasamos a revisar las categorías locales.

Lo establecido, en tres genera(liza)ciones: las up town doñas combinan la laca del copete con los abrigos de Adolfo Domínguez; sus hijas, madres jóvenes y desenfadadas, ya maduras y económicamente estables para Desigual, visten Custo y le compran cosas a su prima diseñadora: Titina, Pipina, Txell, Miriam, Silvia, Lucía, o como se llame; a sus hijos y nietos los visten bien porque la ropa de niños difícilmente es fea, pero no evita el

“salto atrás” que hace que el muchacho se vuelva “capocho” con los años y pierda el horizonte del gusto y se vista horrible, con esos zapatos que parecen más para que Messi anote en el Camp Nou combinados con unos inefables jeans y una bufanda audazmente roja; o que la muchacha se corte el flequillo hasta casi el final de la frente y se deje ese dread lock a un lado, para rematar el look anti-femenino y rebelde con zapatos de skater y uñas comidas.

Lo emergente que no emerge: ¿por qué entonces Carlota, cuyas hermosas piezas inspiradas en la austeridad y los grises de la escena actual sueca, que brillaron en aquel agradable desfile de graduación de la BAU, está de retiro sabático en Ciudad de México?

Porque le da la gana, porque su ego sabe que en México la harán reina de Tlateloclitlan o algo así, porque Barcelona la vuelve cansina. ¿Adónde van a parar las tachuelas de Gori de Palma (de Mallorca) después del show en el

marco del Off de la pasarela Cibeles? Mucho Dr. Martens y poca competitividad, porque el Raval no es ni Bric Lane ni Neukölln; porque el Gótico no es Mitte, ni Riera Alta es RosaLuxemburg-Strasse.

AL SUR DE LA POESÍA

by Sergi Bellver Cualquier lector interesado en la poesía española recordará con rapidez los nombres de diez o doce poetas contemporáneos y comprobará cómo abundan en la lista los nacidos en Andalucía. Sin embargo, no siempre fue fácil publicar allí poesía y muchos de sus autores solían encontrar apoyo editorial en Madrid o Barcelona, aunque de un tiempo a esta parte las cosas han cambiado y varias editoriales defienden desde Andalucía la poesía, publicando también a poetas de otros rincones del país. Algunas de esas editoriales atesoran ya una larga trayectoria, como la sevillana Renacimiento. Otros sellos más recientes y de modesta distribución saben tomarle el pulso a la poesía actual, aunque naveguen en aguas difíciles. Por fortuna, todavía resisten muchas pequeñas iniciativas y aún aparecen nuevas, como Eppur (Málaga), entre otras. En Sevilla la actividad es intensa, gracias a editoriales como la singular Point de Lunettes, la irreverente El Cangrejo Pistolero o Ultramarina, la aventura digital y cartonera del mexicano Iván Vergara. Otras ciudades ofrecen tres ejemplos significativos que, a través de sus publicaciones, resumen y evidencian el potencial de la poesía que, contra viento y marea, sigue abriéndose paso desde el Sur. Tomen nota nuestros libreros, para que pronto Barcelona se traiga de Andalucía algo más que la Feria de Abril.

La editorial malagueña Alfama (Coín), que cuenta en su catálogo con los cuentos del inadvertido Cristof Polo o con el teatro de Jean Bowles, publicó en 2010 Naumaquia, una selección poética del argentino Alfredo Taján, en una bella edición. Pero es en Vendajes 1989,

de Carlos Pranger, donde Alfama da noticias de nuestro tiempo: “En un cuarto esquivo, asfixiada/por un cielo púrpura, Rachael,/ Replicante, entrañas de cristal,/ansía la dominación estética.” (de “Blade Runner”, p.146).

La Bella Varsovia (Córdoba) es, más que una editorial, una dichosa conspiración cultural que promueve sobre todo a jóvenes poetas, y que celebró su sexto aniversario con la antología Sais. Acaban de publicar el poemario Odio, de David Refoyo, dueño del equilibrio necesario para que, entre la rabia y la forma, la poesía nos hable en voz alta de lo real: “ya sabes/seguridad y miedo/no lo olvides nunca/porque pronto lo usaremos para defenderte/nosotros lo hacemos por tu bien:/aseguramos tu calidad de vida” (de “Seguros”, p.41).

Capítulo aparte merece El Gaviero, la editorial almeriense que, junto a libros híbridos y brillantes como Inopia, de Juan Manuel Gil, o Idioteca, de Raúl Quinto, edita de manera exquisita su colección de poesía Guairo o apuesta, en la colección Cuarto Menor, por poemarios como Luzbel de Penumbra, de Teresa Domingo, o Alguien anda en la escalera de incendios, del vasco Harkaitz Cano, otra radiografía humana del ahora: “Bolsillos y maletas rebosantes de lluvia./Sentados de espaldas al panel horario,/viajeros inconscientes fuman su retraso/y llenan los ceniceros de superviviencia.” (de “Pista de aterrizaje”, p.69).

No es La nueva taxidermia una novela, como no fueron sólo cuentos El malestar al alcance de todos, el primer título con el que Mercedes Cebrián comenzó su particular tratado por entregas de nuestra idiocia contemporánea, la de unos nadadores convulsivos que a cualquier etiqueta se agarran pero que no hacen pie en ninguna parte. En dos nouvelles reunidas, su autora plantea un discurso inteligente y descreído sobre la memoria y sobre la madurez que deja en pañales cualquier soflama gafapasta y cualquier mamotreto costumbrista. En los libros de Cebrián las cosas, más que dichas “literariamente”, quedan planteadas de manera sutil y, al mismo tiempo, pesan con toda la gravidez que la escritura es capaz de otorgar a las palabras. La primera de estas novelas cortas, Qué inmortal he sido, pone en evidencia un mal común: la prudencia demencial ante lo imprevisible de las cosas, es decir, la incapacidad de algunos para vivir el presente.

La segunda, la más potente y lograda del díptico, Voz de dar malas noticias, justifica la concepción de La nueva taxidermia como conjunto, en una acertada reflexión sobre el miedo a asumir las riendas de nuestra propia vida (qué otra cosa es sino madurar), y confirma a Mercedes Cebrián como una de las miradas más lúcidas y originales de nuestra narrativa actual.

Qué distinto este primer libro de un, hasta ahora, desconocido obrero norteamericano de otros supuestos descubrimientos editoriales recientes entre escritores surgidos del anonimato fabril. Qué proverbial capacidad de observación la de Donald Ray Pollock, un escritor hecho, maestro revelado.

Qué modo de fabular con la realidad y, sobre todo, qué habilidad para mostrarla a través de un ya inolvidable catálogo de perdedores.

Knockemstiff es, además de su pueblo natal en Ohio, una estupenda novela coral sobre la sucia y blanca decrepitud americana representada en dieciocho relatos que deslumbran desde cada inicio con un fogonazo inconfundible. La ágil narración de esta tragicomedia, en la que el humor puede llegar a ser tan cruel como divertida la desgracia ajena, hace que con Pollock se sienta el lector un poco más cabrón y muy aliviado, porque vuelve a disfrutar de la esencia voyeur de la literatura. Knockemstiff es, sin rodeos, un clásico instantáneo, un puñetazo que hubieran firmado Faulkner, Toole o Sherwood Anderson si hubieran tenido tiempo de ver los EE.UU. como los ha dejado el siglo XXI. Con una excelente traducción a cargo de Javier Calvo y tras el vibrante prólogo de Kiko Amat, Libros del Silencio ha tenido el acierto de presentar en España a un autor que, desde Knockemstiff, no va a dejar indiferente a nadie.

I was walking my dog in the park the other day around 8:30h. I‘m not what you would call a morning person, so I get a little agitated when presented with even the most minor of annoyances before noon. It‘s about as much as I can handle to have a canine that wants to do sprints attached to my arm.

Anyway, I was prancing around the grassy bits trying not to get shit in the treads of my shoes when all of a sudden the animal yanked me in the opposite direction. I whipped around, expecting to see a drop-kick dog or some fucking curious Shar-pei, and practically ran into a woman who was taunting

the beast with a sort of tongue click/finger snap combination. FYI for anyone who doesn‘t have a dog but wants to pet all the ones she sees on the street: it‘s best to check out the owner first. If he looks like he‘s in a rush or his dog is manic, restrain yourself.

Back to the park and my new friend: she thinks the dog is loving her, I know the dog is contemplating wrestling her to the ground.

I try to be nice in these situations because often the would-be dog whisperer is a bit of a shut-in and I feel I shouldn‘t deprive them of social interaction, but I decided I should probably prevent her from getting maimed.
