The First Word The first term of the academic year,2012 has finally come to an end. The second term began on the first day of 2013. The students have been engaged in a lot of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities throughout the first term. There will be a lot more in the coming term and we look forward that these will help our students to become more confident and responsible individuals of our society. “A man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read” Mark Twain I would like to take the opportunity to advise my students to develop reading skills for better comprehension and to enhance their knowledge at this very important stage of their lives. Celebrating Independence The new term began on August 10th for the students. On August 13th, Independence day was celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm. Students delivered speeches on independence & its importance, remembering those who sacrificed their lives for the safety of our country. They reaffirmed their loyalty and sincerity with the country which is most needed now more than ever before.
Choosing the Leaders To inculcate the value of taking ownership and responsibilities to our students “Student council” is formed every year. The campaign for students’ council election began on September 18th, elections were held on September 20th. Oath taking ceremony was held on September 27th. Hamza Altaf Hussain student of X-B was elected as Head Boy and Sana Faisal of X-F was elected as Head Girl.
Graduation Ceremony To celebrate the success of class of 2011-12 in Secondary School Certificate Examinations the ceremony was organized on 23rd October at Agha Khan University Auditorium. Ms. Faryal Tajik Hussain was the chief guest. Students shared their views about school and teachers in their valedictory speeches. Students were awarded medals for their achievements. Parents were also invited to be a part to commemorate the success of their children.
Voicing their Opinions Debates and discussions help students to develop confidence and enable them to express their ideas with better vocabulary and understanding. English debate was held on 19 th October in parliamentary style students enjoyed the discussion and question session. Urdu Debate was held on 1st November, both the levels IX and X participated in it. Certificates were rewarded for participation to all participants.

The Beaconhouse Newsletter Aug – Dec 2012 Iqbal Day Morning presentations were conducted by Urdu society to celebrate Iqbal Day from 7th-14th November. Students participated with zeal and reaffirmed Allama Iqbal’s views and poetry in their speeches. Mahnoor Mansoor, student of X-E elocuted Shikwa and Jawab e Shikwa.
Love for Nature To develop a love for nature “Green Living Organization” organized a quiz “My Garden Quiz”. Guide book was available on official website of association www.greenlivingasc.org. The category 3 quiz sheets were filled by the students and sent to the organization. Students also participated in the poster competition “Go Green”
Global Dignity Day Everyone has right to live a dignified life To inculcate a respect for dignity and awareness on the principles of dignity, we had a weeklong celebration. Essay competitions were held in English and Urdu on the relevant issues prevailing in the society regarding the honour and dignity. To depict and illustrate a message for the cause (dignity) and issues we have in our society, posters were made by the students of all classes and displayed on the soft boards in the school. In the morning assembly speeches, poems and skits were presented by all classes throughout the week. Global Dignity Day was culminated on 17th October. Certificates were awarded for the best performances, essay writing and poster competition. Zarmeen Hameed of was the winner of poster competition and Sehrish Safin, Tanzeelah Arif, Areesha Tariq and Sameen Saeed were the winners of essay competitions.
Ubhartay Sitaray The Citizen Foundation organized a competition for generating funds to educate the under privileged children of our country. They mobilized schools of Karachi under the slogan “Sing to Educate”, in which budding talents were also discovered . Hamza Altaf, Zainub Fatima and Hira Ansari were selected to participate and received certificates for their contribution.
Readers are Leaders International library day was celebrated from 15th - 19th November to motivate and encourage students to read. Student of all classes were divided House wise and wrote skits based on the famous characters of fiction books. Students of each house also wrote poems on the topic “books”. Best poems were elocuted by the students and skits were staged on 12th November. Zaryab Idrees (X-D), Syed Aown Abbas (IX-E) and Hira Ansari (X-A) were given Certificates for writing best poems and Laiba Shahid of class IX-B was awarded for best play writing (Ramdeen based on Mumtaz Mufti’s book Ramdeen). Monitoring Students’ Progress To strengthen and facilitate students’ learning, one to one meetings were held in the month of November. The idea was to discuss the progress of students with their parents and concerned teachers to help students in their areas for developments. This interaction greatly helped in making the learning triangle complete. 3
The Beaconhouse Newsletter Aug – Dec 2012 Battle of the Brightest To enhance the understanding of the concepts of different subjects, students played different online games to celebrate International Games Day. Students of class X played Assembler 3 and 3 Slices 2 on www.physicsgames.net. Students of class IX played Element Hangman on www. education.jlab.org and Dr. Trickle on www. Games.co.za. Haider Kaiser (X-E) and Syed Ali Hassan (X-A) completed 35 levels were the winners of Assembler 3. Jibran Mehdi (X-F), Ammar Ahmed Ghazali (X-E), Sameed Ali (X –A) and Nadir Mirza (X-A) finished all 20 levels of 3 Slices 2. The winners of Element Hangman were Ghulam Mohiuddin (IX-C) and Farjad (IX-C) discovered highest number of elements. Dr. Trickle was won Muddasir Lakhani and Abdur Rehman of IX-A. The winners were given certificates.
Sports Highlights GSBK participated in the following events: A football match was played at National Coaching Centre on 15 th October. Moosa Ahmed and S. M. Abdullah played for Gulshan United, The team secured 3 rd position. Inter-Regional Cricket Tournament was played in the month of October at DHA Rahat Cricket ground. S. Mohammad Ali, Umair Ahemd, Hassan Tariq, Syed Mohammad and Talal Yousuf played for Gulshan United against North Nazimabad Chapter, bagged 2 nd position. Inter-Regional Cricket Tournament: In the month of November, Syed Mohammad Ali of X-C played Inter-Regional Cricket Tournament final for Southern Region Team at Lahore. The team got first position in the final played against other region. In the Inter-Regional Boys / Girls, 2012: Haider Kaiser Saithi participated in 1500 meter race and secured 2 nd position. Sana Faisal participates in relay race and got 2nd position. Both of them bagged with silver medals.
