Relationships “What a day it has been!” I thought to myself as I grabbed a cup of hot chocolate and jumped onto my bed. As I took comfort from its warmth, I evaluated the events of earlier today: how I was on my way to my home and ran into an old friend from college, how we decided to meet up at a restaurant in an hour. Oh! I was so excited. And when we finally sat down to chat over dinner, we talked for hours, non-stop. We talked about memories of college; the classes we bunked, the pranks we pulled, the group studies we had on nights before exams, and much more. Then I told her goodbye when it was late at night and left, exchanging contact information and promising to meet again soon. “Sweet memories, they are! Too bad they are mere memories and now everything is completely different,” I sighed. No, I did not want to admit it, but that does not change the reality, that I had left behind in the past, all the relationships that I had

once worked so hard to build. My friends, my teachers, my acquaintances, everyone, I had left behind. But what was far more tragic was that they, too, had left me behind. No one ever tried to make a phone call, or write a meaningful email, or visit once in a while. Maybe that’s just life. Maybe that’s just reality, or maybe I could call it a consequence of arrogance, disloyalty and voluntary negligence. Whatever the case is, in the end we all moved on and started new lives, erasing every sense of attachment to the past and those whom we once knew. What a shame! I had realized today that I was a liar; we all were. We used to promise to always remember each other and keep in contact, and that our bond of friendship would ever break. Once friends, always friends! What a foolish thing to say, when we knew that distance would tear us apart from each other eventually and this bond would vanish right before our eyes. And what happened to that seemingly-special someone, who vowed to be tried-and-true? I was blind then, when I ridiculously joined in with him when he used to create a vision of a happily-ever-after. It seems like a century ago when he held my hand and assured me that we would go through thick and thin and still be together. Hah! It all sounds like a chapter from a cheesy drama novel, does it not? “What do I really have now?” I questioned myself.” Who stood beside me all this time, really?” Family was my first thought. A bond of blood could never be broke, right? That was true, for all my family, except for my brother, who fought and left us when my parents did not approve of his love marriage. It was that time when I came to the conclusion that even family can be unfaithful and traitorous. As for work relationships, they are just temporary. They only last as long as the job does; a reality that I realized recently when I changed my job. “Oh, what a depressing and hurtful world it is!” I wish that people, including myself, could be more sensitive, deep and devoted to maintaining relationships, rather than neglecting them. I wish more bridges were built than burned.” But why would we want to do that? We are just self-centered, ego-worshipping betrayers, who could live colorful and joyous lives, but sadly, prefer to live as loners and die as loners! Written by: Misha Jehangir (X-C)

Qualities With the increasing expenses day by day, the quality of things in the market is dropping. Nothing is in its purest form whether it’s a hen or a hand full of spices. There is found mixing in one form or the other, so that the quantity of the item increases being proportional to its increase in price. In this way the owner receives greater profits and the buyers get to suffer from the side effects. If you go shopping you will find impure version of jewelry. Gold jewelry, especially, is mixed with copper or other metals to increase its weight, and so goldsmiths achieve greater profit. But as shortcuts have their negative effects, this impure gold causes allergies to people with sensitive skin. Apart from that, the bigger threat comes from the food items. Their quality is what matter the most as they directly affect on people health and they are closely related to a persons life. But, unfortunately there is corruption in the food item qualitatively. Spices, salt and other ‘masalas’ put into food are placed openly and not sealed, which pollutes the. Dirt and sand the open invitation to be mixed with them and make people sick. Ketchup, apart from some good company one, are made in an environment which is destructive to body organs. These are the one available at local markets but some are even found in the cafeteria or canteen of some good standard schools! These ketchups are made under open sky and put into big plastic cans that are actually made for toxic waste. If some animal like lizard or cockroach falls into them, they are simply removed from the top layer, as it is so thick that the animal doesn’t link, and the ketchup is still used. And that is not enough. These ketchups contain everything but not tomatoes! Chicken is the most concerning matter as it constitutes to the major part of our diet. The farmed chicken is made to grow in days through injections which process normally takes months, if taken place naturally. This chicken eats remains of fish and other pollutants. This is the cause behind genetic changes in female, especially young girls which causes facial hair and also infertility. Fruits and vegetables, even, are injected with some chemicals that make them grow bigger in size and faster than the natural process. All of this has proved severely destructive to people’s health and has contributed to shorter live spans. The only solution to this problem is to involve vegetables, in a large percentage, in your diet replacing the unhealthy chicken. Fruits and milk in large amounts should be consumed, but fruits should be checked and milk should be bought from a nearby rural area or village, that have purest farms. Apart from that, organic farming in your backyard is the best solution. Every person can grow some vegetables and even fruits in their yard to be benefited from their numerous advantages and resist ill health. Quality is what matters the most! Discrimination “What does it matter if thy is white or black? It is the goodness of thou heart that must not lack.” “Crack!” a pistol sounded, everyone stopped dead. On the ground lay the bullet struck man, blood pouring from his head.” “Pitilessly eyeing the corpse of the poor, black slave, The Englishman ordered, “Dig him a grave.” “How dare he! The foolish old man! Contradict him, and go against his plan!” “Addressed him with such disrespect! Well, he had gotten rid of that defect!” “Years had passed since that faithful day, The Englishman lay, slowly passing away.” “Surrounded by his money, family and friends, A perfect life till the very end.” “Slowly, he felt the colours fading away, As to death he peacefully gave way.” “By one god they both were created, How then can he be separated? Not by thy being white or black, But by the goodness of thou heart, Which must not lack?” Composed by: Fizza Jamil Rao (VIII)
