What are Standards?
Standards are documents that provide rules, guidelines and requirements for the design, production, use or performance of materials, products, processes, services or persons. They are the result of voluntary national, European and international standardization activities.
The use of standards is voluntary. Standards only become binding if they are the subject of contracts between parties, for example between vendor and buyer, or if compliance with them is mandatory by law.
Advantages of Standards
Standards provide a common language for an efficient communication and work flow between designers, manufacturers, vendors, end-users, certification bodies.
Standards can serve as a catalyst for innovations and help in anchoring solutions more quickly on the market.
Standards define compatibility requirements. As everybody knows, compatibility between individual components and systems is essential.
Standards as a global language of technology facilitate market access and help to reduce technical trade barriers.
Standards help to save costs, for example overhead costs of every part bought or sold.
Standards improve product safety by defining quality and minimum requirements, that help to protect users, their health and safety, and the environment.
Standards reduce product liability risk by providing clarity about the properties of a product and are considered to be clear and recognized rules of technology. In contracts, reference to standards increases legal certainty.
Who creates Standards?
Did you know? Standards are developed by the interested parties themselves and not by the legislator, government authority or a national regulator. All parties interested in the specific topic can get involved with the professional work within the standard committees and contribute with their expertise. Industry experts drive all aspects of the standard development process, from deciding whether a new standard is needed to defining its technical content.
Organisation of ISO
ISO is a global network of national standards bodies. ISO has one member per country, i.e. each member represents ISO in its country. P-members can actively participate by sending nominates into the working groups and by voting on the standards at various stages of their development. O-members can observe the standards that are being developed, and can offer comments and advices.
A technical committee (TC) consists of individual specialists, such as designers, manufacturers, endusers and academia. These specialists are put forward by the ISO member bodies.
Working groups (WG) are established by a technical committee or subcommittee.
How is an ISO Standard developed?
The proposal for a new standard can be submitted by ISO member bodies, ISO technical committees or partner organizations (liaison). ISO checks if there is a global market need by asking the countries to vote. If it is approved, the proposal gets added to
an ISO committee’s work programme. ISO members can choose to actively participate in a technical committee. They can nominate experts to write the draft standard in the working group. After consensus the document is sent up to the parent technical committee for review. The technical committee shares the draft standard with the national experts for comment. Once the national standards bodies receive their feedback, they will then vote to approve or disapprove the draft. The technical committee sends the draft to the ISO central secretariat which sends it to all ISO member bodies for voting. If the ballot was closed and the vote passed, then it can be published as an International Standard.
The standard is reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that it is in line with the technical progress and either confirmed, revised or withdrawn. The review takes into account the feedback from national experts.
Types of ISO Documents
Beside the International Standard (IS), as discussed before, we also know Technical Specifications (ISO/TS) and Technical Reports (ISO/TR). ISO/TS is published for immediate use, but it also provides a means to obtain feedback, because work is still in development. The aim is that it will eventually be transformed and republished as an International Standard. An ISO/TR is informational only and may contain, for example, technical research, tutorials or information on 'state-of-the-art' developments.
EUROTRANS
Within Europe, the member associations represent the interests of more than 600 enterprises, with a collective annual production of ca. 40 billion EURO (including the bearing industry and without the automotive business and the electrical side). Within Europe, more than 160.000 people are employed by this sector. Most of the small and mid-sized companies are active worldwide.
EUROTRANS provides a platform through its technical working group to bring national and international standardization activities into an European context. This is then fed back into the national activities. It is also an aim to promote standardization work within the companies and to young people, since it is an important factor for the competitiveness in a global market.

In the packaging industry, Vertical Form Fill and Seal machines (VFFS) play a pivotal role in ensuring efficiency and reliability. One of the essential components that contribute to the smooth operation of these machines is Megadyne's "Pull Down" synchronous belts.
These special belts are indispensable in form fill and seal machines and bagging machines, catering to a diverse range of industries, from chemicals to food. In the food industry, they are particularly vital in the packaging of various products such as sweets, potato chips, tea, coffee, cookies, and pasta.
The Role of Synchronous Belts in VFFS Machines
In vertical packaging machines (VFFS), maintaining consistent advancement of the packaging material is crucial for optimal results. In most cases, a pair of "Pull Down" synchronous belts are positioned opposite each other on a metal tube to achieve this.
The packaging material, whether it's plastic film, paper, or foil, is wrapped between the tube and the belts. The vertical motion of the belts facilitates the movement of the film, resulting in the creation of a bag that is then sealed and filled.
Toothed belts often feature counterbores or longitudinal grooves on the coating side, aiding in suction and guiding the material using a vacuum system.
These belts offer several key benefits:
+ Uniform Wear Surfaces: Ensuring consistent performance by eliminating hard spots.
+ Continuous Durable Covers: Providing reliable friction for an extended belt lifespan.
+ Outlasting Performance: Precision manufacturing of holes, slots, grooves, and profiles within a precise tolerance.
+ Seamless Covers: Enhancing reliability without
the need for splices or seams.
+ Superior Abrasion Resistance: Extending troublefree lifespan.
What sets Megadyne's "Pull Down" synchronous belts apart?
“Their unmatched ability to maintain synchronous speed and consistent vacuum between the belt and the foil ensures seamless and efficient operation throughout.
Synchronous belts with moulded covers offer the right balance of friction and wear resistance, crucial for efficient bag handling and filling, considering the myriad of film and media types used today. Modifications such as holes, slots, and grooves for vacuum applications can be incorporated to meet specific application needs.
Moreover, thanks to their superior coating material engineered for high abrasion resistance, these belts outlast standard timing belts.” - says Roberto Ala, Industry Segment Manager of Packaging at Megadyne.

In the beverage can growth segment traditional brewery Estrella Galicia in Spain opted for the clever Nature MultiPack system – not once but twice
In its beverage can growth segment traditional brewery Estrella Galicia recently procured not one but two clever Nature MultiPack systems from KHS. In doing so, the company has gone for innovative technology and a reliable partner – not for the first time and certainly not for the last!

In the far northwest of Spain lies the region of Galicia. It’s famous not only for its capital of Santiago de Compostela, a place of pilgrimage and final destination on the Way of St. James, but chiefly for its climate: nowhere else on the Iberian Peninsula does it rain as frequently and as much as here. In strong contrast to the rest of the country, some of it plagued by drought, the green hills, regular mist and often stormy winds are reminiscent of the Irish coast. Farming and fishing are therefore both important here, with the Galicians especially proud of the variety and quality thereof. This is also what Jesús Martínez Garcia confirms, plant manager for beverage producer Hijos de Rivera. “In our region
we’re very conscious of the importance of the origin of our products, of the passion and creativity that goes into them and the demand for quality when it comes to asserting yourself on competitive markets,” he says. “The high appreciation consumers have for Galician produce is based on a long manufacturing tradition for high-quality produce.”
Estrella Galicia, the flagship of the family-run business based in the port of A Coruña, benefits from this horn of plenty. The fourth-largest brewery in the country is famous for its light, golden beer made of particularly bitter malt and hops. It takes over 20 days to brew, ferment and mature, thus lending the

beer its pleasant, characteristic hoppy note. The company is also distinguished by its great willingness to experiment, as master brewer Luis Alvar proudly states. “Each year we brew three or four specialties as limited editions to test their acceptance among consumers. In the past we’ve flavored our beer with chestnuts, pumpkin or honey, for instance, and even with goose barnacles. For one of our milk stouts we laced the beer with milk from cows fed with spent grain . And our pimientos de Padrón beer that we add small, local, sweet peppers to is a real hit.”
Both modern and traditional
The special beers crafted under the name of “fabrica de cerveza” are just one of many examples for the company’s claim to premium quality. “As opposed to the big industrial breweries of Spain, despite our recent rapid growth in size we still see ourselves as a traditional company,” Alvar stresses. “We use cuttingedge technology but always with recourse to classic methods. We’ve drawn a number of red lines in the brewing process that we don’t cross, for instance. And for us, quality always takes precedence over quantity or speed: producing a good product simply takes time – and we give ourselves this.”
In 2019 MEGA was opened on the brewery premises, a world of experience plus museum and events location devoted entirely to beer culture. This is where Hijos de Rivera tells the story of the
company and pays tribute to the family of owners by celebrating their innovative culture and experiences but also their battle against the increasing uniformity of beer. This is also where concerts, festivals and exhibitions are held that regularly attract a large audience.
Besides its commitment to innovative products, the lager marketed under the Estrella Galicia brand continues to be the brewery’s top seller, with Estrella Galicia aiming to sell an impressive almost five million hectoliters of beer in 2023. Thanks to an upward trend that’s way above the average for the rest of the country, the company is clearly on course for success – and sees considerable potential for growth in the future, too. After all, for a few years now the amount of beer consumed in Spain has steadily increased.
On course for further growth
Accordingly, its plans are no less than ambitious: as the existing Agrela production site in A Coruña is at the limits of its capacity with nine filling lines, the brewery is currently investing in a new plant ten kilometers away from the present location. An area covering a total of 500,000 square meters will soon be available that will provide plenty of room for further expansion. One of the key technology suppliers to Hijos de Rivera is Dortmund engineering company KHS. To date, the machine and systems manufacturer from Germany has delivered no fewer

than five lines for glass, beverage cans and kegs to A Coruña. “For us, KHS has been one of our most important partners for many years,” claims Martínez. “We particularly like their high level of innovation which in our opinion makes KHS systems among the best in the world.” One of the most recent joint projects is a turnkey canning line, for example, with a capacity of up to 72,000 containers per hour. The system has two packaging machines. One of these is an Innopack Kisters Nature MultiPacker for the highcapacity range, on which beverage containers are turned into packs of four or six using easy-to-remove dots of adhesive without the need for any film or cardboard. The other is an Innopack Kisters TSPP that has a paper-wrapping module that packs 12 to 24 containers in perfectly folded and glued paper instead of in shrink film. The purpose of both packers is to provide optimized systems that consume as little material as possible and at the same time significantly reduce the packaging’s carbon footprint. In parallel, an existing KHS canning line with a maximum output of 60,000 containers per hour was also expanded to include an Innopack Kisters Nature MultiPacker.
Unique packaging system
“Traditionally, we’ve always packaged our beverage cans in cartons so that we don’t have to use any
plastic,” explains Garcia. “In view of the current debate on packaging and the environment, our competitors are now also increasingly doing away with film or hi-cone packs and instead using cardboard. In this context, we find it important that the packaging systems used for our products continue to be unique on the market. This is why we’ve gone for Nature MultiPack – a real first on the Spanish market.”
Hijos de Rivera supported the launch of the new, sustainable alternative with an extensive marketing campaign. Under the motto of “the best packaging is the one that isn’t there”, the Estrella Galicia six-pack is sold as a NoPack. Thanks to advertising in the form of eye-catching videos chiefly posted on social media channels that showed consumers how to handle the packs, the new system has been outstandingly well received on the market. “We have had lots of absolutely excellent feedback,” smiles Garcia. “Consumers are specifically asking for the NoPack which for them is both an attractive and environmentally- and climate-friendly variant. The most important thing, however, is that we can gage our success not just through our high media presence but also by looking at our sales figures: since the launch our market share has clearly increased.”

Consistent branding
The generally high brand awareness of Estrella Galicia is the result of widespread sponsoring measures that the company consistently implements in many different areas. Activities it supports include Formula 1, MotoGP and soccer – as sponsor of the local club and several teams in Spain’s Primera División, among others – and countless major music festivals up and down the country. The brand is also everywhere in its home town of A Coruña: from house facades in the city center to the control tower of the local airport. What’s more, the Cuatro Caminos beer bar in the middle of an old factory complex boasts the highest beer sales in the whole of Spain. The marketing ploy is so successful that it has attracted a number of imitators. “We’ve strengthened the brand, its values and its identity with our strategy and forged a close bond with the consumer,” Garcia states.
Pledged to provide premium quality, the brewery isn’t satisfied with simply investing in high-profile advertising but also wants to set a good example. “An important part of our activities focuses on saving resources and reducing our carbon footprint,” the plant manager emphasizes. “This was one reason why we again chose KHS to supply our most recent canning line. The systems provider not only scored
points with us for its line layout but also by having the lowest energy consumption on the market. We not only implement particularly energy-efficient technologies but also use methods designed to recover energy. And we think long and hard about the packaging of our products: how can we save even more material? Which materials are recyclable, have a positive ecobalance and at the same time are economically sustainable?” Besides using secondary packaging such as Nature MultiPack or the KHS PaperWrapper, Estella Galicia is thus increasingly opting for the beverage can as its primary packaging of choice. “We’re convinced that this type of container will play an increasingly bigger role thanks to its excellent recyclability and simple handling for consumers,” finds Garcia.
Reliable partner
“In KHS we definitely have the right technology partner at our side to take us through this development,” production director Carlos Bao believes. He particularly appreciates the smooth coordination and cooperation between the project team on the one hand and installation and commissioning personnel on the other. Above all, the local service and support provided by the regional Spanish office are of prime importance to him.

In our opinion, their high level of innovation makes KHS systems among the best in the world
Jesús
“We’re extremely pleased with our new system and especially with the packaging equipment. If you want to be a pioneer, it’s good to know that you can rely on your partners 100%. In this respect, we’ve done everything right.” And so that this stays this way in the future, too, the Dortmund engineering company has now received orders for two more turnkey lines
with a respective upper capacity of 72,000 nonreturnable glass bottles per hour – in perfect time for the move to the new brewery.

RAPID AND STABLE LINEAR MOTION IN ANALYSING DEVICES,THANKS TO LINEAR WAYS.
An increasing number of tested samples per hour and zero failures are the most important factors in bioscience analysers. Nowadays, linear motion mechanism is an indispensable part in these devices which are used widely in medical and researching facilities. Though dozens of linear bearing manufactures provides small size linear guides in the market, IKO Nippon Thompson brings unique technology and solutions to these high-end devices with our unique technology and the solution we offer:
- Excellent and accurate repeatability
- Maintenance-free
- Made from corrosion resistant stainless steel
The engineer from one of IKO’s Miniature Linear Way ML users who is responsible for designing the precision scanners for their medical devices explains: “Smooth and stable linear movement without a mechanical clearance is absolutely a crucial factor for our device performance. A linear motor-driven table must have zero-compromise speed stability in order to achieve a high quality scanning of the biological membrane. IKO Linear Way brought the solution to our high demands.” During the prototype designing, the engineer and IKO discussed numerous factors and finalized the specification. In addition, the end users or maintenance engineers of the devices are free from a re-lubrication thanks to IKO C-Lube technology. In addition to providing the above mentioned technical solutions, IKO worked together with the customer to plan and arrange optimized delivery control in a recently problematic supply chains system, successfully securing the customer’s on-schedule production.
IKO Miniature Linear Way ML does not stop in the field of mechanical parts, but has evolved to IKO linear motor tables by incorporating their excellent performances. IKO provides the extremely thin and compact structured linear motor tables that are suitable for bio-medical, semiconductor, small automation devices. These positioning tables achieve quick positioning from A to B with more than 80% reduction of the settling time compared to the ball screw driven mechanism.
IKO provides the following size range
Miniature Linear Way ML : 1mm to 42mm in width

Kammerer Gewindetechnik GmbH presents rolled trapezoidal screw drives. The spindles, which are produced in a thread rolling process, are characterised by their excellent running properties, high wear resistance, and long service life. The Black-Forest-based threaded technology specialist now offers the components with a delivery time of just four to six working weeks.
Trapezoidal screw drives combine a trapezoidal threaded spindle with a trapezoidal threaded nut. They are used in a vast number of industrial sectors. The majority of the trapezoidal screw drives produced by Kammerer are used in hoisting applications, linear applications, medical technology and in packaging machines from market leaders.
Rolled trapezoidal threaded spindles are manufactured in a chipless cold forming process, thread rolling. This production process has a positive impact on the physical and technical properties of the trapezoidal threads. It gives them a higher wear resistance, tensile and flexural strength, and it gives the smooth thread flanks a better surface quality. The threads have a high profile accuracy – the precise base material tolerances cause a higher degree of precision of the flank diameter. Another advantage is the high level of wear resistance: the rolling process condenses the material in the thread area, which gives it a higher density and hardness. This in turn makes the thread highly resistant to wear, and gives it a long service life.
Kammerer produces the trapezoidal screw drives according to DIN 103 in tolerance class 7e. The trapezoidal threads have a pitch accuracy of 0.1/300 mm and a straightness of 0.8/1000 mm without flaking. Unalloyed steel or stainless steel are the materials used. As standard, Kammerer produces trapezoidal threaded spindles made from unalloyed steel C15 with nominal diameters and pitches of 8 mm x 1.5 mm to 60 mm x 9 mm. Corrosion-resistant
trapezoidal threaded spindles are offered in a range from 8 mm x 1.5 mm to 30 mm x 6 mm. The trapezoidal threaded nuts are designed as flange, round or hexagonal nuts, or can be custom made to suit the application’s requirements. They are generally made of bronze or red brass, but can also be manufactured in steel, plastic or cast iron.
Kammerer offers all manufacturing processes for the production of threads. The full product range includes ball screws, trapezoidal ball screws, custom assemblies and complete systems. The products are used throughout the world in machine tools, general mechanical engineering, precision engineering, handling automation, robotics, medical equipment, the automotive and aerospace industry.

New from Ruland: Mountable shaft collars with face holes
Ruland has released mountable shaft collars with face holes for applications where the shaft collar needs to be directly mounted to a component such as a pulley, sprocket, or metallic plate. The shaft collars are available with drilled face holes that give the user flexibility in mounting hardware, or tapped holes that match the standard screw threading of the collar for ease of installation.
Ruland designs and manufactures face mount shaft collars to have superior fit, finish, and holding power. They have precise face to bore perpendicularity (TIR ≤ 0.05 mm or 0.002 inch), which is critical for mounting
applications these shaft collars are typically used in. The groove in the face of the collar identifies the work surface for easy installation. Ruland face mount shaft collars have a burr-free finish, making them an ideal
solution for applications in industries such as medical, food, and semiconductor, where contamination is unacceptable. Face mount shaft collars undergo proprietary manufacturing processes to maintain their round bore geometry for tight tolerances, proper installation fit, and improved clamping capabilities.
The different mounting options give designers a wide variety of off-the-shelf products to choose from. Drilled holes allow for a wider variety of inch or metric mounting hardware to be used. Tapped holes provide a direct interface between the collar, screw, and mated component for the most reliable fit. Either configuration can accommodate socket head, set, or button head screws. The face holes are aligned 180 degrees from each other, allowing the user to install the collar in any orientation.

Kiln the Game in Cost Savings Forest products industry
Application: Dry kiln fans
Problem: Costly downtime due to lengthy maintenance
A top manufacturer of lumber products in the United States, owning approximately 1.8 million acres of timberland and operating multiple sawmills and plywood mills, was experiencing costly unplanned downtime when the SAF-style bearings on their dry kiln fans failed.
One of their lumber mills in Warren, Arkansas processes 220 million board feet per year of southern yellow pine. Once received at the mill, logs are debarked, cut to length, cut down to boards, edged, trimmed, sorted, and stacked in preparation for the dry kiln process. The dry kiln process, essential to wood production, dries the wood boards by circulating hot air through a chamber via large forced draft fans.
The fans used a competitor’s 4-15/16 inch SAF-style bearings, requiring two skilled maintenance workers, six hours of labor, and exact measurements using specialty tools for installation. In this harsh application, unplanned downtime due to bearing failure was occurring once per year and cost the manufacturer $40,800 per hour in production value.
The success
After testing Safety Mount’s easy installation and reliable operation, plant management decided to standardize their facility on Safety Mount, resulting in an
average annual savings of $163,018
The test
Due to continued failures, lengthy installations, and critical uptime requirements in the mill, plant management tested two Safety Mount bearings on one of the fans in their drying kiln.
The results
As a drop-in replacement to the existing bearing, Safety Mount’s seamless installation of two hours versus the competitor’s six hours of downtime immediately impressed plant management. Without factoring in the increased reliability of the prelubricated Dodge® product, the valuable time savings for increased uptime and the impact on future productivity led them to standardize the mill on Safety Mount.
The why
Shaft-ready out of the box, Safety Mount is a drop-in replacement for SAF-style bearings and features an innovative design with unparalleled advantages over the competition. Its patented dual lock nut eliminates the need for feeler gauges, subjective measurements, and manual calculations, resulting in immediate time savings and improving operational reliability. The patented lock plate utilizes a single-bolt securement mechanism for 360-degree placement options with no hammering for a faster and safer installation. Built to revolutionize mounted spherical roller bearing installations, Safety Mount is the premier problem solver for critical applications.
+ The circulation of hot air through the chamber is controlled by large forced-draft fans, crucial to production and utilizing 4-15/16 inch SAF-style bearings.
+ Safety Mount replaced a competitor’s SAF-style bearing, immediately saving significant time and labor with its faster and safer installation.

NES split ring bearings offer greater thrust capacity
OLEAN, N.Y – Aircraft engine manufacturers, due to the very specific nature of their hardware, have likely long known: Split ring angular contact ball bearings are a viable option for main shaft jet engine applications.
But what about a typical industrial original equipment (OEM) manufacturer?
Let’s say, for example, that this mechanism rotates at an average speed and contains a reversing thrust load. In need of a bearing, one might think, my only choices are a deep groove ball bearing or two onedirection angular contact ball bearings.
A split ring bearing might not immediately come to mind. That’s due largely to unavailability or unfamiliarity.
Napoleon Engineering Services is out to change that thinking. “There’s not enough out there for that person to know that there’s maybe another option,” said Andrew Hvizdzak, an NES senior bearing application engineer. “That’s why we see this as an opportunity to insert ourselves to kind of fill that void.”
A SPLIT RING is an angular contact ball bearing with a one-piece outer ring and two-piece inner ring construction. Its makeup is like that of a deep groove ball bearing aside from the inner ring. And its advantages are many.
The split ring is a two-directional maximum thrust capacity bearing requiring minimum space. Also different from a deep groove, it features a one-piece machined ball cage, which allows for a maximum ball complement and, therefore, greater load capacity.
Essentially, a split ring bearing supports axial loads in both directions, is smaller in width and weight than a traditional duplex set and results in less endplay than a single deep groove ball bearing.
“So, for an application that can tolerate some shaft endplay, in a lot of instances you can replace two bearings with one,” Hvizdzak noted.
Indeed, a split ring bearing may be ideal in several applications, but primarily those that have heavy thrust load condition or reversing thrust loads. It should also be considered for any vertical shaft applications that have heavy downward thrust capacity requirements. The inherent benefit is pairing a split ring bearing with a standard angular contact ball bearing, thereby creating double the load capacity in the primary thrust direction.
Until recently, the availability of split ring bearings was lacking. NES, however, produces the highestquality split bearings at its 46,000-square foot facility in Olean, N.Y.
BY NOW, one might be asking, “why would I ever use a deep groove ball bearing again if a split ring is so much better in many ways?” Hvizdzak said. But split rings have their weaknesses too.
Due to the two-piece inner ring assembly, a split ring bearing with a dominant radial load could operate with three points of contact, meaning balls are touching the ring surface in three places rather than two, which creates increased rolling friction. It’s also always going to possess a certain amount of endplay, though certainly not as much as a deep groove bearing due to the gothic arch raceway design created by the split inner rings.
Therefore, these bearings would not be recommended for applications with pure radial loads. “There could be too much friction and heat generation,” Hvizdzak said.
“That’s why it’s important to have a bearing engineer, like me, or a bearing design program available to evaluate the running contact angles based on load and speed conditions.”
Still, split ring bearings can often be the way to go.
And NES has long manufactured them.
But now the Western New York-based bearing specialists are better positioned to both promote this product and increase its overall visibility.
Why? NES has greatly expanded its bearing engineering team over the last half-decade, swelling
its capacity for such projects. “This is something that we’ve been meaning to do for a long time,” Hvizdzak said. “I think we’re in that position now, where we have a bigger team behind us and can put what we’ve learned on that subject into action.”
Moreover, “our customer base has changed too,” noted Skip Giberson, senior product design engineer. “We’re also seeing a request for more of them than we used to. They’re arguably as easy to manufacture (as other bearings) too.”
Mostly, however, demand has been growing for a bearing that meets these specific requirements. NES’ aim is to help raise awareness about the split ring bearing’s many benefits.
“The timing is right because it’s a niche enough option that there’s not a lot of people out there that understand it,” Hvizdzak said. “But that’s partly because you can’t really open a catalogue and find one with a good enough description of what it is or what it’s advantages or disadvantages are.”
Again, enter Napoleon Engineering Services.
NES HAS been working with MESYS and MASTA to populate their RBC and SMT software programs with basic NES bearing designs. Indeed, it has built a database of NES part numbers which will be integrated into catalogues for both companies.
NES wants customers to know: It’s available for application engineering analysis to create custom designed solutions for specific applications. But that involves much more than merely saying, “here’s a part number that we offer; just buy it.” NES is unique in that, after answering the phone within two rings, it’s eager to discuss the technical side of things as well.
“If they see what we offer and then reach out to us to have that technical discussion, I mean, that’s the intent,” Giberson said. “And it seems headed in that direction because we’ve already had several examples of customers with a unique application where (a split ring angular contact bearing) ended up being the solution for it.
“We design it for them, we make it for them, we consult with them as far as bringing them up to speed on why that’s the solution and how it works. And then things just kind of take off from there.”

Double Gears through Friction Welding Technology
Rolex Rings know-how to provide added value to Power Transmission industry
Rolex Rings (www.rolexrings.com) - one of the global leading players in manufacturing forged, rolled, turned and heat-treated rings for both bearings and automotive industries – developed in the past years specific know-how to produce double gears by rotary friction welding technology.
Friction welding refers to joining two metallic surfaces by the frictional heat generated at their interface due to relative motion applied between them. The parts being joined are held under high compressive load. As the frictional heat starts to soften the materials at the interface, the applied compressive load creates a hot forging type action that forms a metallurgical bond between the two surfaces. The joint thus produced has a narrow heat affected zone in the plastically deformed zone adjacent to the joint, but no fusion zone. If there is any flash or extruded material on the sides, it can be removed by a later operation.
Rolex Rings applied such technology to produce double gears through a manufacturing process that includes the following steps:
+ Forging
+ Pre-machining
+ Friction welding
+ ISO Thermal annealing
+ Final turning
Special procedures for the operations and for the controls and testing have been developed by process
engineering and quality team of Rolex Rings to be in condition to supply hundreds of thousands of components made by such technology during the last few years.
Advantages for the customer and the applications are several with respect to the traditional production process. However, the main ones can be summarized as it follows:
+ Drastically reduced input material (much lower manufacturing cost);
+ Better fibres flow, resulting in a longer life in endurance tests.
With 3 manufacturing units located in Rajkot (Gujarat) in India, Rolex Rings is public company whose shares are traded at Mumbai stock market and exports about 70% of its total turnover in more than 17 countries between Europe and America. Thanks to 6 high speed hot formers between Sakamura and Hatebur, 18 vertical hot forging presses with hot rolling unit, 30 cold rolling units, 590 CNC turning machines, 41 heat treatment furnaces, 4 induction furnaces and other machinery (including special friction welding operation), Rolex Rings is able to satisfy in competitive and reliable way the demand of large multinational companies in several application fields.

develops Active Caster for service robot applications
As part of a drive to get robots into more and more workplaces, operating side-byside with humans, a team of expert development engineers at global motion control specialist NSK have come up with a novel way to improve the mobility of collaborative robots (cobots): the NSK Active Caster. This innovative omnidirectional motorised drive unit, which is ready for use in a diverse range of cobot and service robot applications, could soon come to the assistance of countries facing ageing populations and labour shortages.
The NSK Active Caster wheel unit is suitable for use in close proximity to people. Smart, quiet and compact, Active Casters fitted to service robots are currently undergoing field tests and could shortly play a role in workplaces around the globe. Service robots that interact with humans is a very new field, one with direct benefits for a number of industries, including logistics and medical.
Hospitals and care facilities, for instance, require workers to perform many physically demanding tasks in a timely manner to aid the recovery of patients. Here, Active Casters could act as service robots by automating medical carts, transporting medical supplies, moving gurneys and reducing the overall workload in these busy environments.
This capability could prove vital in many established economies around the world suffering from ageing populations and labour shortages. In such locations, cobots and service robots taking advantage of Active Casters may soon become necessary to automate repetitive and manual tasks, enabling humans to focus on higher value work activities.
Potential applications also exist in wider society, helping people suffering with limited mobility for instance. Here, Active Casters could become part of a robot ‘suitcase’ to make it easier for people to travel, or a moving cart that doubles as a walker to help carry things around the house. The programmable walker could move out of
the way and return when convenient, giving the user more space when sitting down without having to worry about keeping it within reach.
At present, the NSK Active Caster is undergoing repeated operational tests in a laboratory featuring various surface environments, such as uneven floors, carpets, bumps and slopes. The team wants to ensure the product can facilitate motion in all directions, carry heavy loads and traverse gradients over the most challenging of terrain. Active Casters feature two motors per wheel, and control steering and motion through the difference in their rotational speeds. Moving forward, the company’s development engineers will continue to evolve the design by applying NSK’s strengths in bearing and lubrication technology.
Balancing the performance-to-cost ratio is a key focus of the development process. Ultimately, the team is using technology and know-how cultivated in many fields of research and development to drive this ambition.
NSK has been manufacturing bearings for more than 100 years, helping the company nurture close ties to cutting-edge fields such as cobots and service robots. In the Active Caster project, like many projects before, NSK will continue to communicate closely with its customers and make every effort to devise solutions that add value to industry and society.

’s new Modular Synchronous Generator delivers flexible backup for the energy transition
+ 20 MW class provides new opportunities for peak shaving, intermediate or continuous baseload operation
+ Design enables integration of flywheels to help operators add inertia to tackle their grid code challenges
+ New approach to cooling increases efficiency
ABB has developed the new Modular 20-megawatt (MW) class synchronous generator as a flexible, scalable approach to balance power grids as they transfer an ever-increasing amount of renewable energy. In contrast with previous designs intended for continuous output only, the modular platform
can be configured for various operational profiles. These range from short-term, peak shaving, through intermediate operation to traditional, continuous baseload generation. The new synchronous generator also offers the capability to increase the inertia available by incorporating flywheels.
“Growing levels of intermittent and variable renewable energy resources (RES), such as wind and solar are creating increasingly challenging conditions for power grids. Hence the growing need for reliable generators designed to maintain the balance essential for resilience and security of supply,” says Markku Väinämö, ABB Global Product Manager, Generators. “That is why we have worked with some of the global leaders in engine power plants to develop this innovative platform. It offers the adaptability essential to support a new generation of operational profiles and applications.”
In addition, generating sets often need to meet country-specific grid code requirements before they should be connected to electricity networks and the Modular synchronous generator is fully grid-code compliant. Another demanding requirement is to stay connected during a low voltage or short-circuit event in some part of the grid. This calls for high inertia to ensure that the plant stays synchronized with the grid when the fault is cleared, and voltage returns to nominal. To support this requirement, the Modular synchronous generator has an option to add inertia by incorporating additional flywheels.
Modular construction, together with ABB’s extensive global supply chain footprint enables the new generator to be delivered within shortened timescales. It is also designed to support easy transportation and installation
Using the Modular synchronous generator in peakshaving or intermittent operational profiles typically
means that the running hours are shorter compared to traditional continuous operation. This reduces the demand for cooling. Therefore, the new design also features an upgraded cooling unit which can be operated only as needed.

BUMAX receives fastener order from OPUS Aerospace for prototype reusable rocket
French spacecraft designer and manufacturer OPUS Aerospace has chosen to use premium screws from Swedish specialist fastener manufacturer BUMAX for its new suborbital rocket and future vehicles designed to send satellites into space.
OPUS Aerospace has decided to use BUMAX 88 screws to secure the two domes of a prototype cylindrical fuel tank for the Mesange suborbital rocket. The domes must have high-strength screws as they are a critical part of rocket with extremely high pressure.
OPUS Aerospace designs, develops and manufactures economical space launch solutions dedicated to nano-satellites, micro-satellites and mini-satellites and small payloads. The company’s mission is to democratize access to space for as many people as possible and to accelerate space exploration. OPUS Aerospace is based in France.
“We already offer our customers various space systems services and are currently conducting pilot tests for the different parts of our new fully reusable rocket,” explained Safouane Benamer, CEO of Opus Aerospace. “We’re planning a test launch of our Mesange rocket in early 2024, which will pave the way for us to launch sub-orbital payloads of up to 1,000 kg and orbital payloads of 250 kg. We’ll scale up our offering step by step.”
Standard stainless steel fasteners wouldn’t cope with the loads
“Our initial calculations showed that standard stainless steel fasteners simply wouldn’t cope with the loads,” said Ignacio Amundarain, Launcher Mechanical Engineer at OPUS Aerospace. “We have already tested and validated the design of our fuel tank with BUMAX 88 on the ground with even more demanding pressurization tests than we can expect in normal conditions. We are confident that this will ensure the safe operation of our fuel tank.”
Crucial properties of BUMAX 88 fasteners are high strength, corrosion resistance, low-temperature
resistance and reliability. The enhanced properties of the BUMAX 88 are achieved through a combination of unique BUMAX manufacturing processes and the highest quality European steel.
“BUMAX 88 also cost effective”
OPUS Aerospace has obtained an excess supply of BUMAX 88 that will be used for other important applications on the prototype rocket. These include securely fastening the fuel lines from the fuel tank.
“I know how reliable BUMAX are from my previous job of designing satellites,” said Amundarain. “They are also cost effective compared with other fastener solutions with similar premium properties and we are looking forward to continuing our rocket development journey together with BUMAX.”
BUMAX often chosen for challenging scientific R&D projects and other hi-tech manufacturing industries
Our premium fasteners have been chosen for many scientific high-profile projects and products, including CERN, ISS and the Einstein Telescope project,” said Lars Holm, Managing Director of BUMAX. “When the stakes are high and you need the best and strongest fasteners in the world, you opt for BUMAX.

The challenges of inline thickness measurement
When selecting an in-process system for measuring the thickness of film, plate or sheet materials, a number of challenges need to be considered, including sensor alignment, linearity and the effects of thermal changes, says Glenn Wedgbrow, Business Development Manager at Micro-Epsilon UK.
There are many reasons why we need to measure thickness. All materials have a tolerance in production, so any materials that are too thin or too thick could cause a problem further down the line or at the end customer’s site. Changes in thickness during production can indicate wear of components, for example, in extrusion dies or on rolling stands. Monitoring trends can point to early warning signs.
The traditional method of checking thickness is often to take a measurement sample from the start of the production run and then again at the end. But what happened in the middle? If you find the material is out of tolerance, that’s a lot of scrap to consider. So you might choose to take more readings during the
process. If these checks are being done manually, they often require the production line to stop. Most process variability will come in ‘start’ and ‘stop’ phases, so keeping a line running is generally key to improving consistency. Ultimately, checking the product thickness as it’s produced ensures that the end customer receives the quality of product expected.
Target material types and the production processes used all have a bearing on how the thickness of a product can be measured. Sometimes it is based on the setting of a gap on a roller or adjustment of dies in an extrusion head. It could be liquid poured and cured such as glass, rubber or metal. It could also be part of a secondary process where the basic material
is already produced, but is then combined with similar or differing materials as multiple layers, or even woven strands that are then bonded such as carbon fibre.
Let’s now consider some of the challenges of measuring thickness.
Single-sided measurements
Perhaps the simplest thickness measurement is a single-sided measurement against a reference or datum surface. First, the sensor is zero’d on the datum surface and the target to be measured is inserted. The reading of the sensor is changed or displaced by the material thickness. There are a number of uncertainties with this method. If the reference or datum moves after mastering, the reading will be incorrect. Similarly, if the target does not sit correctly on the datum surface, the air gap will also be included in the measurement. The same issue can also occur with tilted targets.
If we are only allowed to view a target from one side, we must consider if we can combine technologies to enable accurate measurements. Where we have a mix of different material types, we can utilise those different material properties to our advantage. For example, an eddy current sensor in combination with a laser triangulation sensor can be used to measure sprayed skin thickness. The eddy current sensor measures the distance to the nickel-coated spray mould and has an opening in the centre through which the laser sensor measures the distance to the sprayed part. Eddy current sensors only measure against metallic targets and therefore see straight through the non-metallic sprayed coating. The use of an air coil in eddy current sensors from Micro-Epsilon makes this combination possible, as the laser sensor can look through the eddy current sensor at the same measuring point. When both signals are subtracted, the thickness of the applied sprayed skin is measured.
Another well used sensor combination is achieved with eddy current and capacitive sensors for nonmetallic materials passing over a roller. Movement of the metal roller is considered by the eddy current sensor and the capacitive sensor measures the material or coating thickness.
Single-sided measurements – special
case
If the target is transparent, it is possible to make an absolute measurement of the material thickness from one side using only one sensor with Interferometer or confocal technology.
The use of light refraction creates ‘edges’ or return signals that indicate the transition between the air and the material. Knowing the refractive index of a material enables the accurate measurement of the material thickness provided it stays within the measurement or working range of the sensor.
Measuring from both sides
If single-sided measurement is not suitable or the challenges cannot be overcome, in many cases customers want to know the true material thickness by measuring the material in ‘free space’, which requires having space on both sides of the material so that a measurement can be taken from both surfaces.
When you consider this set up, there are a number of challenges that must be considered and either overcome or accepted.
Sensor alignment
The sensors must be positioned so that the measuring spots coincide ‘through’ the full measurement range of the sensor. There should be no offset, tilt or inclination of the sensors in relation to the measurement object. For example, with a sensor
+ The sensors must be aligned correctly.
offset of 1 mm and inclination of 2°, the effective error equals 35 µm, and at 10 mm target thickness increases to 41 µm.
Particularly with laser triangulation sensors, the location of the beam spot to the sensor housing should be noted. It should not be assumed that two apparently identical sensors will position the spot in the same place. Standard sensor housings are not usually precise enough for precision thickness measurements unless time is taken to align them correctly. To help customers make their own thickness set ups, the ILD1900 sensor from Micro-Epsilon uses an innovative sleeve mounting arrangement to tighten the spot spacing from housing to housing.
When you have two sensors looking at the same target, you must consider that each sensor has its own cycle time. If your target is vibrating or moving in the gap between the sensors then it’s very easy to introduce an error. Consider a target oscillating up and down by 1mm at 20Hz (times a second). A difference in capture time of 1ms between your sensors would equate to an error of 125µm.
Positioning of the sensors/measuring range
The next challenge is the relative position of the sensors and their measurement ranges.
Depending on how the sensors are arranged, the
+ Without compensation, a small change in ambient temperature can have a big influence on the measurement.
position of the target edges must stay within the measuring field. If the sensors are set so that the measuring zones do not overlap, then situations can arise where one sensor may not see the target. Consideration should also be given to process ‘start’ and ‘stop’ conditions, for example, is the material held in tension at all times? Speed changes in the line can induce upward or downward movement. Is the setup able to capture these events if needed? Ideally, the sensor ranges should overlap and cover the full range of material movement or at least control the movement.
Linearity
The accuracy of a sensor is often referred to as its linearity. The linearity value describes the deviation from the ideal, straight characteristic curve. Each measurement sensor has its own measurement uncertainty, or non-linearity. This means that at any given point in the measuring range the actual reading from a sensor can vary by a percentage of its measuring range. So taking just two sensors without any additional processing means that both sensors’ uncertainties need to be considered with respect to the accuracy looking to be achieved. For example, without adjustment, just moving a target 200 micron up or down can result in errors of 8 micron. The position in the range also has potential to affect the true value. To solve this, the sensors must be calibrated together as a whole.
Effects of thermal changes
Even when the sensors have been aligned and synchronised, there is still a further challenge that can affect everything – thermal changes. When measuring a target thickness in free space, the gap between the sensor and the opposite sensor is critical, as this is the constant on which the differential measurement is based. Taking a mechanical frame with a pair of sensors and cycling the temperature shows that the effective change with just a 5°C swing is up to 20 micron.
System capability
The final challenge – if the previous ones have been overcome or the errors associated have been accepted – is to prove the capability. Exactly how do you check or confirm the performance of your solution? There are two factors to consider here: the system repeatability, i.e. how much variability in the measurement system is caused by the measurement device, and reproducibility – how much variability is caused by different operators.

Hygienic design in process technology
Saving energy, time and cleaning agents: technical solutions for efficient cleaning
With machines and systems in hygienic design and optimised cleaning processes, resources can be saved for cleaning, and system availability can be improved. The mixing and dispersion technology specialist ystral has developed different technical solutions for effective cleaning.
+ Denis Hunn, Head of Advanced
The rules of hygienic design aim for complete cleaning and emptying of a machine or plant with the lowest possible use of cleaning agents. ystral machines and plants are increasingly designed according to these rules: Every flange, every seal of a mixer or disperser has been designed in a way to enable easy and complete cleaning – without gaps, threads or hidden zones. Even areas such as the underside of a mixer flange can be cleaned without shadows by means of special cleaning heads.
Disperser used as CIP pump
In order to render cleaning processes as easily as possible and limit the time needed for cleaning, ystral integrates CIP technology directly into the system, and the conveyor effect of the available machines is used for cleaning whenever possible – a separate pump is then no longer needed. An YSTRAL Conti-TDS dispersing machine operated in the circuit can thus not only be used for processes such as induction, wetting and dispersing of powders as well as pumping the complete product, but also for circulation of the cleaning medium. For GMP-suitable cleaning, the flow rate of the cleaning medium must be at least 1.5 m/s to prevent the formation of sediments and create sufficient turbulences. With ystral, independent of the size of the system, the flow rate is usually even 2 m/s.
ystral also uses the conveyor effect of the YSTRAL Conti-TDS disperser for its tank cleaning machine TRM100, which compared to other cleaning systems enables a significantly higher liquid throughput – up to more than 50 m³/h. The system has proven itself
in practice, above all for circulation of cleaning liquid in vessel sizes between 5 m³ and 50 m³ as well as for users requiring high jet pressure for effective cleaning.
Cleaning with recipe components
So far, vessels have often been cleaned with cleaning agents at the end of a process. This takes time, and the cleaning waste generated must be processed or disposed of. An efficient alternative with technologies from ystral is cleaning with recipe components: One option here is the saving of liquid raw materials during the production of the batch, with which the system is rinsed into a letdown tank subsequent to pumping out. For example, pigments are left in the process directly and must not be separated from the cleaning agent.
In case of subsequent batches with similar raw materials, cleaning is integrated into the process and does not occur at the end in this case, but at the start of the following process. Residues of the previously produced product are utilised here in the subsequent batch. During filling, they are rinsed out under high pressure – not with cleaning agents, but recipe components of the subsequent batch. Cleaning waste, which must be disposed of and processed, is not generated here.
No surface drying of the product in the vessel
When powder is induced from the top into an open vessel, dust above the liquid on damp surfaces results in adhesions, powder crusts and contaminations on the vessel wall, cover, agitator shaft and all fittings in the vessel, the removal of which is time- and energyintensive. However, in closed systems with powder induction below the liquid level, the cover space of the vessel can be kept largely clean.
Depending on the application, ystral also uses spray nozzles, for example to prevent water-based paints from drying when pumping out the product. Such a nozzle is used to finely nebulise the main liquid component in the vessel, thus creating a humid atmosphere above the product to reliably prevent drying. This is not possible with an open process.
Cleaning concepts for the periphery
ystral also developed cleaning concepts for the system periphery with the powder and liquid handling and the cleaning of pump-out lines. For example, a specially designed rinsing quiver is used for cleaning suction hoses. This quiver enables the suction hose, which is contaminated with the raw

material internally and externally, to be integrated into the CIP cleaning of the system in a connected state and thus be cleaned simply and quickly, secured by a clamping clip.
Experiences from the food and pharmaceutical sector applied to other industries
In terms of cleaning processes, ystral uses experiences from industries with very high hygiene requirements, such as the pharmaceutical or food
industry, for applications in very different industries. Therefore, an ystral machine, which is used for the production of paints and varnishes, can be cleaned just as well and quickly as a machine for the production of baby food or pharmaceuticals. For example, ystral installed a process system for a manufacturer of printing inks specifically designed for paint changes, on which paint changes from black to yellow can be realised within measurable contamination limits of 100 ppm.
In the production of varnishes and paints, systems with hygienic design also enable the production of waterbased products with a significantly lower use of biocides. The consistent prevention of zones without or with low flow ensures that no germ nests can form.
Development of individual cleaning concepts
ystral solutions for the implementation of cleaning processes are always tailored to the specific system design and the respective application. For a manufacturer of fragrances, whose objective it is to implement cleaning processes energy-efficiently and with low use of cleaning water, ystral has integrated a flush water tank for example between two process systems, which is used by both systems. For cleaning an ystral system, the around 60 °C hot water is used from this tank for a pre-rinsing step, pumped out and the system is then cleaned in a second rinsing step using 80 °C hot water. After completion of fine cleaning, this water is pumped into the flush water tank, where it can be used for pre-cleaning in the next cleaning process. This way, the user could significantly reduce the water and energy requirement during cleaning.
What is also important for the fragrance manufacturer is that after hot water cleaning, the system can be
fully dried within a short period. For this purpose, different valves are activated to blow out the residue of the cleaning medium in the system by means of compressed air. With hygienic design, a system can be dried automatically within a few minutes, only the manhole cover must still be dried manually.
Hygienic design as competitive advantage
Flexibility is vital today in many areas of the process industry: Manufacturers must be able to produce a large number of product versions and newly developed products order- and user-oriented, i.e. to realise frequent product changes. With an optimised system design and simple, fast and resource-saving cleaning, users from industries such as the coating, inks or chemical industry in particular, in which systems have so far often not yet been designed according to the rules of hygienic design, can achieve a competitive edge.

Police tactical vest: IoT and AI to enhance safety on operations
The innovative connected tactical vest project uses artificial intelligence (AI) for its abnormal-situation detection system and can transmit this warning to a command center via the Internet of Things (IoT). This innovation, applied to the operational needs of various law-enforcement professions, is the first result of a partnership between France's General Directorate of the National Gendarmerie (DGGN) and Wearin', the Swiss technology group Conextivity’s startup.
The new tactical IoT solution, which attaches to preinstalled body armor, ensures redundant safety and connectivity through a state-of-the-art AI-enhanced warning device that is independent of current radio systems. Called the Wearin' Brain, this ruggedized device is triggered either manually by an SOS button, or automatically when it detects an abnormal situation such as loss of verticality, piercing of the body armor cover after a stab wound, or a bullet impact. In the event of a warning, the device also transmits the geolocation of personnel.
The connectivity kit features smart power management via a central high-performance battery guaranteeing 8 hours of autonomy, which considerably increases the running time of gendarmes’ electronic equipment. The kit's optimized cabling allows equipment to be recharged via a single cable, which the agent can easily connect at the end of a mission, or to his/her vehicle if required during an extended mission.
The Wearin' Brain, the Wearin’ Battery and its quickrelease system are integrated ergonomically into the vest via MOLLE fasteners and/or heavy-duty multifunctional pouches with no snagging areas. The kit also features luminous fibers integrated into the front and back of the vest offering personnel on night operations the option of enhanced visibility.
"The vest that we are co-developing with Wearin' embeds the latest technologies in connectivity, detection, communication and visibility," explains Lieutenant-Colonel Fabrice Blanc, director of the "connected vest" program at the DGGN. The IoT solution called Wearin' X DGGN Smart Tactical Vest has been designed with an open, modular architecture that keeps the interoperability of current and future systems in focus. Over the course of the partnership, it will be able to evolve and adapt to meet the operational needs of lawenforcement agencies, which vary according to the different types of intervention by gendarmes, national or municipal police officers, or customs agents.
"It's the field that commands in this type of applied innovation," confirms Jonathan Brossard, Director of Wearin' and CEO of Conextivity Group. " Versatility, modularity and interoperability are at the heart of our R&D approach. The smart vest's functionalities and performances will be tested by various units of the gendarmerie throughout 2024, with the aim of meeting their diverse needs in terms of safety, resilience and efficiency in the field. Our collaboration with the DGGN involves pooling our experience, skills and technologies to deliver a cutting-edge, open system that will evolve in line with the current and future requirements of agents’ multiple professions and missions."
The IoT platform developed by Wearin' can be delivered with a dashboard integrated into the commandcenter system to provide real-time information about the situation on the ground, via data from sensors, warning devices and communication systems worn by personnel on operations. Based on this precise intelligence of operations underway, transmitted in bidirectional streams, commanders can speed up tactical decision-making and improve the coordination of intervention units, as well as their response times. Signed in November 2023, the innovation partnership between Wearin' and the DGGN is supported by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces' Defense Innovation Agency and the National Gendarmerie’s Transformation Department.
Officially unveiled at the Milipol show in Paris in November 2023, the connected tactical vest from Wearin' and the DGGN will be showcased on the international stage at the World Police Summit in Dubai, March 5-7, 2024, on Wearin' stand no. SS2 A32. The vest has also been shortlisted by the show's jury to compete for the prestigious World Police Summit Awards in the Innovative Police Force category.

To ensure that BearingNews and Motion+Drives magazines are doing their part to protect the environment, the parent company, iMotion Media, has developed a strategy to offset the carbon footprint of its printed magazines. The twofold approach includes a fully supported tree planting campaign in conjunction with each newly released edition, and the use of recycled paper in the printing process.
Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword. Members of the globalcommunity have become increasingly aware of human impact on the environment. As a result, a massive movement is driving private sector companies to responsibly manage their environmental, economic, and social resources to safeguard the well-being of future generations.
The term ‘sustainability’ encompasses a large swath of efficiency objectives that aim to go beyond the thresholds of carbon neutrality. Companies must fulfill further economic and social obligations by devising less wasteful practices. When discussing the printing of magazines, there is long-term value achieved by responsibly implementing environmentally friendly solutions associated with the use of paper. The paper industry has focused its efforts on the sustainability of raw materials, processes, and products. Highlighted
within the industry’s strategy is the promotion of sustainable forestry practices and responsibly harvesting renewable raw materials. Tree planting is considered one of the most effective ways to combat global warming, as forests naturally reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) by removing it from the air through photosynthesis. In line with this strategy, iMotion Media has adopted ‘tree planting for reforestation’ as the most effective method to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the printing and distribution of Bearing News and Motion+Drives magazines. In careful coordination with the release of each printed edition, a tree planting campaign will be launched to help restore forests and offset the use of natural wood materials used in paper production. In addition, iMotion Media is supporting the use of recycled paper in the printing process to reduce dependence on new materials. It will also continue to promote the currently available digital magazine options.
Thanks to the use of recycled paper and certified companies dedicated to carefully managing wood harvesting, there has been a decline in global deforestation. And while there are positives to both recycled paper and the responsible production of new paper, recycled material contributes significantly more to global social and economic sustainability goals.
iMotion Media is happy to be a part of a forward-thinking movement with ambitions for a greener future. Through its broad reach within the Bearing. Power Transmission, and Motion Control Industries, iMotion Media intends to create an infectious optimism that will compound progress towards greater sustainability.
