“A maximum of performance and transparency” RINGSPANN supplies complete braking and emergency stop systems for mining technology

Tailored to the special challenges of the mining industry, RINGSPANN implements modern system solutions for braking and emergency stop scenarios. They are used in belt conveyor systems, bucket wheel excavators and bucket elevators and can be designed for specific applications. The basis for this is provided by the manufacturer's one-stop shop, which, in addition to various drum and disc brakes, also includes regulation, control and monitoring systems. This offers numerous starting points for process optimization to designers and operators of installations.
"The 24/7 availability of conveyor belts, wheel excavators and bucket elevators is a top priority in mining, bulk materials and earthmoving technology. After all, even the failure of a single component can paralyze the entire material flow and result in costly repair work," says Martin Ohler, who is jointly responsible for the Brakes Division at RINGSPANN. In order to protect both manufacturers and operators of heavy-duty mining systems from unpleasant surprises, he and his team regularly implement complete system solutions for braking and emergency stop applications on the basis of the company's one-stop shop. They are used worldwide and, depending on the situation, consist of drum or disc brakes, backstops and clutches, as well as units and modules for regulation, control and monitoring. In close partnership with the customer, RINGSPANN's engineering department ensures that all components are optimally matched to each other and that their interaction guarantees maximum performance and transparency. Martin Ohler explains what is primarily important here: "Firstly, it must always be ensured that the brake system is activated immediately when it is necessary – and actually only then. Secondly, maintenance or repair cases must be recognizable in advance – i.e., before a breakdown."
+ The technological heart of RINGSPANNS brake-systems for the mining industry is often the HCO2R hydraulic power unit. It offers the possibility of optimizing the positioning processes of extensive conveyor belt systems by precisely regulating and controlling the brakes. Image: RINGSPANN
Intelligent control of braking processes and controlling the brakes. In this case, the focus is only on the parameter braking time, which reduces the operating effort for the user to a minimum. In addition, in an HCO-2R-based system, the braking processes of several conveyor belt segments can be synchronized with each other quickly and without programming effort. The length, incline, speed and load of the system are irrelevant here. "What used to be an uncertain time and cost factor can now be done with high precision in seconds," says Martin Ohler.
With these guiding principles in mind, the experts at the brake and freewheel manufacturer RINGSPANN implement a large number of application-specific braking and emergency stop systems year after year, which prove themselves around the globe wherever valuable raw materials are extracted for the world market, under sometimes adverse conditions. The technological heart of these complete solutions is often the HCO-2R hydraulic power unit. For example, this offers the possibility of optimizing the positioning processes of extensive conveyor belt systems that work with several drive units by precisely regulating
Integration of the RINGSPANN controlled braking system in the drive train is primarily based on the

design specifications of the system manufacturer. The advantage of using it on the low-speed side of the drive is the high protection factor in the event of a gear breakage – the belt conveyor or bucket elevator can then be shut down quickly and safely. When selecting the brakes, however, it must be taken into account that they are designed to be sufficiently strong. When used on the fast-rotating side, on the other hand, the brakes can be dimensioned much smaller, and the braking force is continuously adjusted during the braking process via a compact control system and a frequency converter. "However, the gearbox must then be designed in such a way that breakage is impossible," emphasizes Martin Ohler.
the required spare parts early enough and to reduce downtimes to a minimum in the event of repairs," explains Martin Ohler. Typical monitoring components of RINGSPANN's system solutions are, for example, sensors for constantly monitoring the wear level of the brake pads or operating status monitoring for our slow-running backstops.
Brakes and locks for all occasions Finally, there is also a wide range of drum and disc brakes that RINGSPANN offers for use in the drive trains of heavy-duty conveyor systems in mining, bulk materials and earthmoving technology. They are available in numerous different series and, with clamping forces of up to 560 kN, form as it were the executive branch of the complete braking solutions. As the world market leader in the field of freewheel technology, in addition to its industrial brakes RINGSPANN has access to a large portfolio of backstops of different designs for the realization of braking and emergency stop scenarios. "As a system supplier of modern brake systems we can always access numerous alternatives, thanks to the enormous range of our one-stop shop for components for industrial drive technology. This gives us a great deal of leeway in the implementation of customer-
Minimize downtimes as a precaution In addition to the hydraulic control system, the drum and disc brakes – and, if necessary, the backstops – the brake and emergency stop systems from RINGSPANN also include various monitoring modules for predictive maintenance. With these sensor-based monitoring units, all necessary maintenance intervals can be systematically planned and any overload and failure torques that may occur can be detected at an early stage. "In this way, we create the conditions for a plant operator's MRO team to be able to procure

to the RINGSPANN design. This is reflected not only in the elimination of programming work on the part of the customer, but also in the fact that the infinitely variable brake control is always designed in such a way that manual operation on site is only carried out via a single rotary potentiometer. As standard, the operator of the conveyor system can regulate the braking time within 20 to 40 seconds with high accuracy. Extensive conveyor systems consisting of numerous belt segments with several independently operating drives and controlled braking systems, can be easily synchronized with the HCO-2R – regardless of different conveyor speeds of individual belt segments or different loads and gradients!
Radical simplification With the HCO-2R from RINGSPANN, users can adjust the brakes of their conveyor system without programming knowledge so that they always react according to demand. All adjustments due to changed belt loads, fluctuating conveyor speeds, alternating load requirements, or even the change between longer and shorter holding times, are radically simplified by controlled braking according

Inauguration of the World's First Plant to Produce Fossil-Free Hydrogen for Heating Steel Before Rolling Swedish Prime Minister successfully inaugurates the world's first plant to produce fossil-free hydrogen for heating steel before rolling
The leading European manufacturer of steel and one of the largest steel recyclers in the Nordic countries inaugurated the world's first fossil-free hydrogen plant for heating steel before rolling. With the new facility in Hofors, a new chapter begins in Swedish steel history with significant potential for global emissions reduction.
"Sweden is now the hub of the fossil-free revolution in steel making. What Ovako is accomplishing here today is a crucial step – this is green transition in action, not just words", Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated during his opening speech.
Tobias Hansson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy in Sweden, commented, "We at Hitachi Energy are immensely proud to have contributed to this significant milestone towards a more sustainable steel industry by delivering a modular eHouse solution for electrifying the electrolyzers."
Historically, heating steel has required substantial amounts of fossil fuels. Ovako's new hydrogen plant is the world's first facility to produce fossil-free hydrogen for heating steel prior to rolling, nearly eliminating emissions at this stage of production. The fossil-free hydrogen will be used to heat steel at adjacent rolling mills, but also for refueling fuel cell-powered trucks. The excess heat is converted into district heating.
Maria Persson Gulda, Chief Technology Officer at H2 Green Steel, added, "Technical expertise, market knowledge, and extensive hydrogen production experience are already strong competitive advantages in the growing hydrogen economy, which will be crucial in rapidly decarbonizing challenging industries. This collaboration is an excellent example of both Sweden leading the way and the importance of working together, sometimes in unexpected partnerships."
"Today is a proud moment for me and everyone at Ovako. Here, we are showcasing the path to achieving fossil-free industrial high-temperature heat. It's fantastic to see visitors from all over the world here in Hofors. We look forward to sharing our experiences and assisting other stakeholders in reducing their emissions," said Marcus Hedblom, President, and CEO of the Ovako Group during the inauguration.
More about Ovako's Fossil-Free Hydrogen Plant in Hofors +
Also present at the event were Japan's Ambassador Masaki Noke and key individuals from Ovako's partners.
+
"Thanks to partners such as the Volvo Group, Hitachi Energy, H2 Green Steel, and Nel Hydrogen, the hydrogen plant in Hofors will make a difference from day one," Marcus Hedblom added.
22
Ovako's hydrogen plant is the world's first facility for producing fossil-free hydrogen to heat steel before rolling. This reduces emissions from this production step to nearly zero, with only water as a byproduct. The plant in Hofors is also Sweden's largest electrolysis plant. It features an electrolyzer that passes electricity through water to split it into hydrogen and oxygen gases, which can then be used as fuel.
+
+
+
+
The 20 MW plant will generate 3,880 cubic meters of fossil-free hydrogen per hour, as well as producing oxygen. In addition to steel heating, the fossil-free hydrogen will be used for fueling fuel cellpowered trucks. The technology solution is flexible and can contribute to stronger grid stability, enabling it to handle higher levels of renewable energy sources. Excess heat can also be utilized in district heating networks. The investment of around 180 million SEK is supported by the Swedish Energy Agency through “Industrial Leap”. The plan is to use local hydrogen production in all Ovako units where steel is rolled by 2030, provided there is good access to fossil-free electricity to power the electrolysis process.
The development of the fossil-free hydrogen plant is carried out with support from the Swedish Energy Agency and the European Union.

Sarens consolidates its position as the leading player in heavy lifting thanks to its expansion into the Italian market Sarens acquires a minority stake in the Italian company Zanetti, a leading provider of services and solutions for the oil and gas, energy and construction sectors. Following the agreement with Begoos, the Sarens family regains control over 100% of the company's shares, a fact that contrasts with the situation of the other players in the sector, which are looking for new shareholders. In this context, Sarens consolidates its role as a leader in the industry and maintains a very optimistic outlook for international growth and expansion into new markets.

Sarens has reached an agreement with the Italian company Zanetti, under which the Belgian company will acquire part of Zanetti's shares. At the same time, Effe Holding SRL, an Italian company headed by Carlo Fagioli, will acquire another part of company's shares, but Zanetti will continue to hold a majority stake in the organization.
services provided to customers, allowing them to face their engineering challenges in a much more efficient and productive way. As Carl Sarens, Director of Technical Solutions, Projects and Engineering at Sarens, points out, "Zanetti is a company that is very well positioned in the Italian market, and is even recognized internationally by large companies in the construction and energy sectors, given its ability to offer solutions that adapt to the needs of each project. At Sarens we share this vision and these same objectives, and we look forward to facing new challenges together and continuing to contribute to the evolution of the industry both at home and abroad".
With more than 50 years of experience in engineering services, testing, industrial weighing, conveying, lifting and alternative lifting systems, Zanetti specializes in providing innovative and highly customized solutions for the oil and gas, wind, power, ceramic, marine and civil sectors. With this agreement, the three parties involved aim to enrich and increase their operations by offering comprehensive services and much more specific and complete technical solutions thanks to this collaboration. The fact of having a greater number of specialists in the sector favors the quality of the
Laurano Zanetti, majority owner of Zanetti Solution, stated that "At Zanetti, we are very pleased to have one of the companies with the longest track record and international experience in our sector. The more than 60 years that Sarens has been dedicated to

the onshore and offshore wind market that will focus on wind turbine maintenance. Moreover, Sarens continues its expansion in Oceania, initiating a new joint venture with Trans Wonderland Ltd (TWL), Papua New Guinea's leading integrated transport and logistics company, to create the new market unit: Sarens PNG (Papua New Guinea).
In this way, Sarens is able to increase its presence in the Mediterranean country. Despite having carried out specific projects, such as that of San Giorgio di Nogaro, where Sarens was able to transport via SPMTs the 16 new gates of the Panama Canal locks (weighing between 1,900t and 4,300t), its presence in the country was not fully consolidated. Moreover, this new acquisition coincides with the Sarens family's recovery of 100% of the Sarens Group's shares. Following the agreement reached by Begoos (Luc Tack Group), which had taken a minority stake (22%) of the Belgian company's shares in 2021, the Sarens family will once again own 100% of the company. This action sets a precedent for the future of the company, where Sarens consolidates its strong position in the global heavy lifting arena, considering a context in which the main players in the sector are looking for new shareholders, moving away from the long-term stable shareholding they have enjoyed in the past. "We would like to thank the Tack family for the great contributions and added value they have made to the Sarens Group over the past two years. As we now hold 100% of the company's shares, Sarens is emerging stronger than ever as the leading international player in crane rental, heavy lifting and engineering transport. This, coupled with our expansion into the Italian market, bodes well for our company's growth in the years to come," says Carl Sarens.
Beyond these new achievements, Sarens' involvement in European-wide projects such as those in France, with the installation of various plants such as those in Fécamp, Saint Nazaire, Provence Grand Large or, more recently, in the lifting and transport work for the construction of the Saint Brieuc offshore wind farm, off the coast of Brittany, attest to the company's role as a leader in the sector. Undoubtedly, this new expansion into the Italian market and the Sarens family's recovery of 100% of the company's shares ensure the long-term ownership of the company, which will also enable the organization to refine its long-term strategy and reinforce the confidence of its customers and employees.
About Sarens Sarens is the global leader and reference in crane rental, heavy lift and engineered transportation services. With state-of-the-art equipment, value engineering, one of the world's largest inventories of cranes, transporters and special rigging equipment, Sarens offers creative and intelligent solutions to today's heavy lifting and engineering transport challenges. With more than 100 entities in 65 countries operating without borders, Sarens is an ideal partner for small to large-scale projects. Sarens currently employs 4,543 highly qualified professionals who are ready to serve the needs of any client worldwide and in all market sectors.
As part of this growth that the company is beginning to experience, Sarens is also positioning itself at the forefront of the energy transition with the creation of Sarens Wind Service (SWS), a division specializing in

+ Minister Habeck tries out the working principle of a wind gearbox on a model…
The energy transition will not succeed without industry. This is how the visit of Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Dr. Robert Habeck to the Flender site in Voerde on Thursday could be summed up. Flender is the only manufacturer remaining on the market that produces drive systems for wind turbines in Germany, and equips every third turbine worldwide with one of its drive components. This decisive role in the transformation of the global energy supply was the reason for the Minister to accept the invitation at the Hannover Messe to visit Voerde.
not only showed the minister the production steps, they also let the politician lend a hand. Habeck used a crane to insert the central planetary carrier into the gearbox, grabbed a huge wrench, started the final test run of two offshore giants, and finally brought a tested gearbox on its way to the field with a final quality control tag - including a spontaneous, personal greeting.
Energy transition needs industry and vice versa The focus was on wind energy, but Flender CEO Andreas Evertz felt it was important to give the minister and his team another message to take with them: without industrial production and raw material extraction, there is no energy transition. Wind turbines need cement for the foundations, steel for the towers, composite materials for the rotor blades. These need to be extracted and produced by traditional industries. "This is the second part of our business. You can find Flender everywhere. With our gearboxes for all industrial sectors, we ensure that they continue to provide the basic materials for our daily lives. Above all, our innovations ensure that they can do this in an increasingly energy-efficient way," said Evertz. Habeck was able to see this for himself
Habeck becomes a Flender expert Minister Habeck was impressed by the technology and the dimensions of the gearbox production in Voerde. On average, three to four wind gearboxes leave the plant every day bound for the onshore and offshore wind farms. In the case of the offshore giants, the gearboxes from Voerde currently reach power classes of up to ten megawatts, are several meters high and weigh up to one hundred tons. "I'm learning a lot here. These technologies are the prerequisite to reach our energy transition targets and they are a masterpiece of engineering," says Habeck. During the tour of the plant, Flender employees

the global environment. This is a major threat to our industry," the Flender CEO said.
New waterfront site needed
As the minister and Evertz sat down for the final photo in a large 10-megawatt wind gearbox, Habeck said, "To reach our targets in the energy transition, we need value creation in our own country, and we need to involve existing companies like Flender. I very much hope that the measures we have put in place for the rapid expansion of wind power will keep a lot of value creation here."
For the ever-growing offshore drives, the expected market growth also brings new challenges. These will soon no longer be able to be transported by road, so Flender is on the lookout for a manufacturing site on the water to be able to supply offshore wind farms by ship. "I hope that we will find a good solution in a timely manner," says Flender CEO Evertz. Then Minister Habeck could send out even more and larger drive trains made in Germany with his signature.
Evertz is hoping for further support from politicians to strengthen Germany as a business location. "Energy prices are not allowing us to operate competitively in

Couplings & Shaf Collars
+ Ruland zero-backlash jaw couplings are commonly used in medical, semiconductor, test and measurement, and robotics, due to their ability to dampen impulse loads in start-stop applications
Solutions from Ruland: Jaw couplings for start-stop applications Ruland zero-backlash jaw couplings are a three-piece assembly designed to accommodate high acceleration and deceleration curves that result in peak torque. Jaw couplings are ideal for systems that experience hard starts, hard stops, or reversals, including in medical, semiconductor, test and measurement, and robotics applications.
43
+ Ruland curved jaw coupling on shaft
Ruland’s balanced jaw coupling design consists of two hubs and an elastomeric insert known as "the spider." The hubs are machined through a proprietary process that creates a curved jaw profile, enabling a press fit with the spider for zero-backlash operation. Start and stop applications in servo motor drive systems will often experience high peak torque loads caused by inertia, friction, and high acceleration/ deceleration rates. The spider dampens these impulse loads to minimize shock to the motor and other sensitive components. Spiders are available in three durometers – 85 Shore A for greatest dampening, 92 Shore A for a balance of dampening, torque and torsional stiffness, and 98 Shore A for a small amount of dampening and the highest torsional torque and stiffness.
significantly reducing maintenance costs when compared to coupling styles that require complete replacement. All Ruland jaw couplings are RoHS3 and REACH compliant. Fully custom jaw coupling designs are available for users seeking special materials, sizes, or specifications. Jaw couplings are part of Ruland’s complete zero-backlash coupling line, including rigid, bellows, disc, beam, oldham, controlflex, and slit couplings. Full product information, 3-D CAD files, and additional technical specifications are available at ruland.com.
About Ruland Ruland Manufacturing Co., Inc. is a privately owned family company founded in 1937. Ruland has carefully and responsibly manufactured high performing shaft collars, rigid couplings, and motion control couplings for the past 40 years. Ruland’s product line was recently expanded to include a variety of machine components from select manufacturers that align with Ruland’s performance and quality standards.
Jaw couplings offer a high level of customizability by allowing users to combine clamp and set screw hubs with various bore options, including inch, metric, keyed, and keyless bores, with sizes from 1/8 inch to 1-1/4 inch and 3 mm to 32 mm. They are considered failsafe as the interlocking hubs provide direct power transmission for controlled shutdown if the spider fails. Replacing the spider restores the original performance characteristics of the coupling,

Lenze relies on the FVA-Workbench for technical sales With the expertise of a systems provider, Lenze works for and with customers to develop high-quality mechatronic products, powerful hardware and software automation systems, and digitalization services in fields such as big data management, cloud or mobile solutions, and design software for the Internet of Things (IoT). As challenges increase across the mechanical engineering sector, it is essential to be able to rely on capable partners where necessary and focus on core competencies.
52
A scalable toolbox forms the basis for an efficient value creation chain
Shared databases are a central component for efficient work
Modular systems are a popular solution for manufacturing industrial gear units, as they allow customers to choose from a wide range of options. Configuration tools enable sales personnel to assist customers with the selection of suitable components. This not only simplifies the sales process, but also leads to more efficient production. Development engineers have clear guidelines on which to base new products, which leads to better planning and faster implementation. The use of common parts can reduce effort and save money, as components can be manufactured in large quantities and reused in different products.
At Lenze, the catalog is configured as a shared database for development and sales. Technical sales personnel use intelligent features to select suitable motor-gearbox combinations and run calculations based on customer-specific operating data. This provides obvious added value for the customer. Service lives, safeties, and expected loads can all be determined in a short time. Maintenance of the underlying database and the use of simulation tools make it possible to quickly and easily perform technical calculations without having to rely on a central calculation department. In less than a minute, the customer is provided with a data sheet which includes reliable statements about the gearbox based on these technical calculations.
These days, a catalog is much more than just a printed work or a configuration tool. Increasingly, it serves as a company’s treasure chest. Thus, it is essential that everyone involved has appropriate access to data and is able to export it in a suitable format. Product development must be able to add and modify products, and modular designs must be exported so that they can be used as a basis for customizations. Sales personnel access the product catalog via a configuration tool, working together with the customer to determine optimal solutions. Calculations which consider specific operating loads can be used to help the customer identify variants which best meet their specific needs. The customer is provided with reliable figures which can be used to compare different drive variants with each other. The calculation models are automatically generated from the catalog database.
Product development manages the database in the background, adding new products and creating models for automated calculations. A similar gearbox can be loaded from the database as a starting point and modified as needed. This is particularly important, as it ensures that customized products comply with the catalog standard, and that all calculations are uniformly configured. Automatic model generation also leads to enormous time savings for product development. New products and variants are the result of careful optimizations, especially with regard to the microgeometry design, as this has a significant influence on the characteristics of the final gearbox. Care must be taken to ensure that all relevant loads are considered in order to obtain an efficient, low-noise gearbox with a suitable load capacity. The FVAWorkbench’s powerful reporting system helps users to clearly and easily interpret the results.
53
The FVA-Workbench is Lenze’s tool for electromechanics
More automated calculations Modular systems are revised at regular intervals, whether this is due to market or customer requirements, or new research results that are available in the FVA-Workbench. An entire series, and potentially all installation positions, are often calculated during such a revision. This quickly results in a large number of variants, all of which must be calculated correctly.
The FVA-Workbench’s extensive automation options can replicate simple tasks or complex processes. Data can be imported or exported, and calculations can be parameterized and started. The system is designed by engineers for engineers so that automation can be easily implemented without additional skills. The FVAWorkbench fits perfectly into Lenze’s configuration and design tool environment.
In this case, all relevant models can be exported from the Lenze product database for mass calculation. This level of automation makes catalog revisions quick and easy, including evaluation of the calculations. Manual maintenance of tables is no longer required.
An intuitive user interface is also available for new product design. It can be used to design, modify, parameterize, and calculate new gearboxes. The parametric construction of the model makes it easy to make modifications.
These days, Lenze rarely relies on manual gearbox optimizations. In many cases, expertly designed automated processes are used for variations. Defining modifications to the model in advance saves manual configuration time. Calculations can be processed and evaluated quickly. As a consequence, the number of calculations is constantly increasing. Companies are often faced with the challenge of how to reduce calculation times. The FVA-Workbench offers a wide range of time-saving mechanisms which are continuously adapted to industry requirements.
In addition to a large number of standard load capacity calculations for a wide range of drive components, simulations are also available for noise behavior, loss behavior, and local loads. Even complex geometries such as casings can be considered in the calculation. With its roots in Forschungsvereinigung Antriebstechnik e.V. (FVA), users of the software can be assured that all calculations have been compared with bench tests and verified by the best universities in Germany. Lenze has been involved in FVA’s research activities for over 50 years, and is active in the board of directors. Frank Maier, Chief Technology Officer of Lenze Drives GmbH and FVA board member, summarized this commitment as follows: “Lenze’s customers value reliability. Using the FVA-Workbench for technical sales makes it possible to save time and money with automation in product development, while also ensuring calculation quality.“
Conclusion With the FVA-Workbench, Lenze has a powerful tool for quickly and easily performing all gearbox development tasks. The high level of automation is crucial for productivity and makes it possible to use calculations in sales discussions. Catalog databases are maintained which are directly linked to these calculations.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has made clear that renewables alone will not be enough to meet the aims of the Paris Agreement. Improving energy efficiency, particularly within industry, will play a huge role under the IEA’s 1.5°C-aligned net zero scenario. Indeed, the IEA refers to energy efficiency as the “first fuel” of the energy transition.
discussions that will be looking at solutions on net zero targets. The IEA has said that net zero will require a doubling of the rate of progress on energy efficiency and a tripling in annual efficiency-related investment. To that end, we are furnishing executives with data and insights to help build their companies’ business cases for energy efficiency improvements,” said Mike Umiker, managing director, Energy Efficiency Movement. “The report demonstrates how investments in efficiency can serve as a valuable hedge against energy and carbon price volatility, while making a true, needle-moving impact on emissions. Energy efficiency is industry’s biggest emissions ally this decade.”
Doubling energy efficiency by 2030 could cut greenhouse gas emissions by almost a third compared to today’s levels, according to the IEA.[1] Therefore, there is an urgent need for industry to make more and better use of the mature, scalable technologies at hand. The Energy Efficiency Movement (EEM) is a global forum consisting of more than 400 organizations, from 36 countries, that shares ideas, best practices, and commitments to create a more energy-efficient world. Published today, the EEM’s new report, “The Case for Industrial Energy Efficiency,” sets out the potential economic and emissions gains associated with smarter use of energy by industry.
Ten key energy efficiency actions The new guide builds on the EEM’s 2022 publication, “The Industrial Energy Efficiency Playbook,” which established 10 key actions industrial and commercial organizations could put into practice quickly to lower energy bills and reduce carbon emissions. The new guide groups the 10 actions in a strategic framework divided into three pillars:

industrial heat pumps (18%). In addition to the new guide for executives, more detailed, downloadable economic and climate models are available for the individual actions. The results for emissions reduction, cost savings, and gross domestic product (GDP) growth presented in the report are based on modeling commissioned by the EEM from Development Economics, an independent economic impact assessment provider. From May to October 2023, Development Economics undertook rigorous modeling of the economic and emissions outlook for each action in the guide. This modeling incorporated the best available data and included input from subject matter experts at leading industrial players including ABB, Alfa Laval and Microsoft. Expert advice was also provided by the IEA.
For each action, the carbon savings, and where applicable, the financial benefits, are quantified. Total carbon savings from the 10 actions amount to roughly 1.5 gigatons in 2024, rising to 4 gigatons by 2030. These estimates are based on midpoint scenarios, yet still equate to an 11% reduction in annual global carbon forecasts by 2030 (using the IEA’s “Stated Policies Scenario” as the business-as-usual baseline). Using the report’s more ambitious scenario, the 2030 savings could reach 5.3 gigatons, or around 15% of total emissions that year. For the five of the 10 actions where financial savings can be meaningfully calculated, industry could be saving $172 billion a year in 2024, and $437 billion annually by 2030 (mid-range scenario).

Shims & Shaf Alignment
+ With its M-Tech® shim ranges, MARTIN addresses all users for whom the alignment, levelling and compensation of shafts, bearings and units is part of their daily business.
The Next Level in Shaft Alignment Shims Customized shim assortments from MARTIN simplify alignment work
Wherever precise alignment, levelling and compensation of shafts, bearings and machines is required, the shims of the M-Tech® product line from MARTIN prove to be real problem solvers. Assembled in robust transport cases with standard assortments or as a world first in the form of non-standard sets, they offer a great deal of scope for process and quality optimization, especially in the commissioning, assembly and maintenance of drive systems. Up to 780 shims with thicknesses from 0.025 to 2.0 mm are available. 64
+ Christoph Martin, CEO at Georg Martin GmbH
With our M-Tech® ranges, alignment is child's play. Drive shafts can thus be optimally aligned, which has a positive effect on the bearings of the aggregates and significantly reduces downtimes. What once began with classic, vacuum skin packaged motor shims has now developed into a comprehensive portfolio of precision shims, which are provided to customers in M-Tech® branded or individually equipped special cases. This refers to the M-Tech® range of shims from MARTIN, which play a central role in aligning drive shafts or compensating for height differences between motors and drive units. For many manufacturers and users of drive systems, they have become an indispensable element of quality assurance during initial setup as well as
maintenance, repair and servicing work. They make a valuable contribution to process optimization, especially when shafts or entire drive trains need to be aligned to the hundredth by means of high-precision laser sensors. "With our flexibly applicable M-Tech® shims, alignment becomes child's play. Drive shafts can be optimally aligned, which has a positive effect on the roller bearings of the units and significantly reduces downtime - that is the primary goal of our shims," says Managing Director Christoph Martin.

shims made of stainless steel. The individual layers of multilayer shims are stamped to a very high quality and lie press on top of each other, giving them high compressive stiffness. In addition, MARTIN shims are designed to avoid undesirable spring pack effects. A non-standard assortment case can also consist of M-Tech®L (multi-layer laminated, manually peelable) and M-Tech®S (solid) plastic shims weighing only a few grams. In this case, the user can work with lighter shims and benefit from the special advantages of polymer shims: Corrosion resistance, electrical insulation or vibration damping.
The current range of M-Tech® shim assortments from MARTIN includes five transport cases with standard assortments, two cases labelled "light" and one empty case with free slots for individual selection. All standard assortments are assembled ready for use with steel shims of the type M-Tech®S (solid, stainless) in ten graded material thicknesses from 0.025 to 2.00 mm. The refill packages offer additionally 3,00 mm shims. Depending on the model, the cases contain between 380 and 780 shims with edge lengths of 50, 75, 100 or 125 mm and can weigh up to 26 kg. The refill packages comprise additionally the 200 by 200 mm shim contour. Hence all standard ranges cover a wide range of typical alignment and levelling work.
Shims with a big effect Above all, the use of the multi-layer non-standard M-Tech® shims supports the implementation of lean manufacturing concepts. "Instead of many individual shims, a multi-layer non-standard shim in combination with, for example, one or two solid standard shims is then sufficient to align a position. The fitter therefore does not have to keep an oversized case with standard assortment and does not have to struggle with its heavy weight," says Christoph Martin. On special request, MARTIN also realizes the shim assortment cases in the customer's branding. For several years now, the company has been supplying
Lighter and smaller are the "light" cases, which offer a smaller number of special steel or polymer shims. Because of their special equipment, MARTIN calls them Non-Standard ranges. They consist of 165 shims each with edge lengths of 50, 75 and 100 mm. In this version, the cases weigh a maximum of 8.9 kg. If taken as a Non-Standard kit in a polymer version the weight is only 2,6 kg. A Non-Standard range is, for example, a combination selection of edgewelded, multilayer M-Tech®V and solid M-Tech®S

Custom Bearing Manufacturing
NES Bearing Company continues to answer call Customer service at heart of NES’ custom bearing production
OLEAN, N.Y – It was a normal Wednesday morning at NES Bearing Company. The coffee was still hot, the lathes were turning, orders were being shipped. And then the phone rang. NES (Napoleon Engineering Services) was asked by a long-time customer to perform a condition analysis based on photographs, which ultimately led to the following question: “How quickly can you make a new cage (for this particular bearing)?” This was a long-lead material item for which there’s only one source in the world and a current lead time of approximately 8-12 weeks.
At most other bearing manufacturers, the customer would have faced a lengthy, drawn-out process or been turned away entirely. At NES, however, that call – answered within two rings – was sent directly to the chief engineer, who inquired with the nearby vice president of operations about the availability of that stock. The latter provided the piece within minutes along with confirmation that the project could be completed within a few days.
indeed different. It’s at the core of the Olean, New York-based company’s identity. “We’re right here, we’re one point of contact for our entire operation,” said Chris Napoleon, NES’ chief engineer. “The manufacturing plant is 50 feet from the office in which this conversation took place. The people that make things happen from a design, manufacturing and even stock inventory standpoint are within arm’s reach – not in another state, another country or another continent.”
True, in this case, there was an element of luck involved that the material was readily available. But that’s not the story here. The point is that NES was able to take quick action so that this customer could make an immediate decision about how it was going to proceed. In this way, NES Bearing Company is
NES REMAINS bustling internally. The company completed a 22,000-square-foot addition to its campus in 2022. It’s in the process of

becoming compliant with AS 13-100, a supplemental standard to AS-9100, to meet the special additional requirements of certain companies. It continues to boast North America’s largest independent bearing inspection and testing facility. And yet, “we can be reactive so that our customers can make a decision in real time,” Napoleon said. “That’s powerful.”
Customers often have advanced expectations for quality needs that NES fulfills related to traceability, including the need for approved suppliers for raw materials and special processes, such as heat treatment, platings and frozen processes. Additionally, NES incorporates material readiness reviews, utilizing people from multiple disciplines for print and process router approval to ensure accuracy and efficiency of the manufacturing process. Currently, it’s working on meeting the specific AS 13-100 standard for aerospace customers such as Honeywell and Rolls Royce. “Our goal is to say what we do and do what we say,” Napoleon noted. “And then we repeat that.” It’s all in the name of meeting the highest level of product reliability.
As such, NES has a more personal, and perhaps unparalleled, relationship with the customer experience. Those with whom the company works are going to know right away if help can be provided, and in what ways. In terms of custom bearing manufacturing, the difference between Napoleon and others can be found in five key characteristics: Special features, unique materials, optimization, traceability and short lead times. Of these, traceability plays a pivotal role.
Bearings SPECIAL EDITION
83
NOW IN its 26th year, NES Bearing Company continues to provide a range of services, from custom manufacturing to testing and inspection. It’s heightened its presence in the aerospace industry and grown its source qualification inspection (SQI) program to bolster its reputation as world inspection leaders. NES’ constant, however, is the production of standard, high-precision angular contact and split-inner ring ball bearings. And at the root of the manufacturing side is meeting specific customer requests – faster, in a more streamlined fashion and to the best of its ability.
A customer might have a general idea of what it needs, Napoleon said, but until one reviews that gameplan with a specialist in the custom bearing manufacturing field, there may be something missing or a feature that is not manufacturable. Say, for instance, that a customer desires an anti-rotation or puller groove feature on a bearing. The requirement of an additional spec shouldn’t delay the design work or impact lead time. That’s because what might be a challenge for others is commonplace for NES. Napoleon has a standard in place that allows it to create that design with minimal extra effort. In this way, NES Bearing Company can “plug and play” with several requests. Its message to potential customers is as straightforward as the process: “We know what works. Leave it to us.”
Global lead times continue to rise. NES’ mission is to assist customers in reaching the shorter lead time requirement they need or expect, provide the bearing they may not be able find elsewhere and answer that phone call within two rings. It’s what sets the company apart from others.
“We’re going to help align things so that the shortest distance from start to finish is a straight line,” Napoleon said. “We’re going to try to minimize the effort to get you what you need.”
NES can help enable customers to move closer to the proverbial finish line by being able to meet each of those five characteristics: Special features, unique materials, optimization, traceability and short lead time.
Courtesy of J.P. Butler, Marketing Coordinator, Napoleon Engineering Services.
“All of this is hard work, that’s why the other guys don’t do it,” Napoleon noted. “Our particular skill is determining what the customer really needs and creating a solution with efficiency in each of those areas.”

Aerospace Application
Spherical Plain Bearings Excel in Landing Gear Applications In the Aerospace industry the importance of landing gear maintenance can never be overestimated because the components and systems must operate safely and efficiently in the most demanding and often, extreme conditions – every time. Regarded by some aviation experts as ‘mechanical marvels’, landing gear is a ‘big deal’, with initial sales in the global market valued at 10.79 Billion USD (2021) and predicted to grow to 22.90 Billion USD by 2030 (fortunebusinessinsights.com). Furthermore, aerospace landing gear maintenance represents around 20% of total aircraft maintenance costs because it directly impacts safety, reliability and performance, where even minor defects or failures could lead to catastrophic consequences.
harness the full potential of a bearing’s performance and safe operation, as the consequences of a poorly installed bearing could be far reaching. This applies to initial installation into an airframe assembly, a main shaft on a jet engine, or a suspension system.
Regular and precise maintenance ensures that all components are in optimal working condition, minimising the risk of malfunctions, accidents or downtime, because in an industry where safety, precision and consistency are paramount, proper maintenance procedures are ‘non-negotiable’. These procedures also extend the operational lifespan of expensive equipment and help to reduce operational costs.
Precision bearing specialists CARTER MANUFACTURING are approved aerospace bearing suppliers to industry leading landing gear manufacturers and are accredited to ISO9001 incorporating the requirements of AS9120 with flow down from AS9100. Carter also offers the full range of UNASIS Aerospace Bearing Tools, giving customers the ability to correctly install bearings, first time, every time.

distributed evenly across the landing gear components. Articulation – Landing gear components need to articulate or pivot to accommodate the various angles and forces encountered during take-off, landing and taxiing. Spherical plain bearings allow for this, enabling the landing gear to move in multiple directions, while maintaining structural integrity.
Due to the extreme loads and forces occurring in landing gear systems, spherical plain bearings are an ideal option and are typically larger than in other aerospace applications, which can also present challenges in tooling design. Many of the larger landing gear applications require the tooling to be portable – without compromising tool performance and often cannot be mounted in a pillar drill, or drill press to install, or replace the bearing. Therefore, portable tools have to be utilised, similar to avionics and aircraft wing repairs that standard MRO tools are used on.
Shock Absorption – During landing, aircraft experience significant shock loads as they touchdown on the runway. Spherical plain bearings help absorb and dampen these shocks, reducing the transmission of impact forces to the rest of the aircraft structure. Corrosion Resistance – Aircraft often operate in challenging environmental conditions, including exposure to moisture, salt and other corrosive elements, which is why spherical plain bearings are typically made from corrosion resistant materials.
Attention to detail is critical so careful consideration of all aspects of tooling design, such as the number of cutting teeth, their profile in our portable cutting tools and for our swage tools we may increase the number of rolling elements due to the larger circumferences of the bearings used. Tooling must also be as user-friendly as possible, so we generally design with the focus on the end-user to ensure that tools can be used with just a single fitter / operator.
Weight Considerations – As in many engineering applications, engineers and designers are always looking to minimise the weight of system components to improve energy-efficiency and performance. Spherical plain bearings are chosen for their ability to provide the necessary load-bearing capacity, whilst keeping weight to a minimum.
As the preferred choice for most landing gear systems, it’s important to understand why spherical plain bearings are the best option:

Load Distribution – Aircraft landing gear must support the entire weight of the aircraft. As an example, an Airbus A320, one of the Worlds most used aircraft has an approximate take-off weight of around 77,000 kg. This is obviously a substantial load and spherical bearings are designed to handle both radial and axial loads ensuring that the weight of the aircraft is

Cultivate the Right Mindset for Success
By addressing these questions, we empower lubrication technicians to become the first line of defense, aligning lubrication practices with the evidence-based mindset shared by Condition Monitoring professionals.
To achieve true transformation, a change in mindset is paramount. As Heraclitus wisely noted, "Everything changes except change itself." To lay the foundation for successful implementation, it's crucial to challenge the status quo and embrace change. Bearing failures rooted in poor lubrication practices are costly and widespread. But if you don't assign a euro value to the problem, you won't find a solution. Lubrication is a top strategic priority, but it's often overlooked as a profession. Together, let's elevate the lubrication role, training, and culture.
A Comprehensive Diagnosis for Success The LUBExpert Implementation Master Class tackles common issues and provides the solutions needed to transform your lubrication practices. Join us on this journey towards lubrication excellence. Together with SDT, you can change the culture and mindset surrounding lubrication, minimize downtime, and maximize equipment reliability. Don't let bearing failures cost you more than they should. It's time to take control and optimize your lubrication strategy with SDT's LUBExpert Implementation Master Class.
Building a Strong Lubrication Chain Your lubrication practices are only as strong as your weakest link. The lubrication chain includes management, lubrication engineers/strategists, and lubrication technicians. Each link is equally important, and when any link lacks awareness or involvement, bearing failures occur. A breakdown in communication leads to lubrication collapse. A culture of awareness, ownership, communication, discipline, control, responsibility, and recognition is essential for lubrication excellence.
A Word from SDT This training course is the result of years of work in the field, problem-solving, failures, successes... in short, the collective knowledge of extremely passionate and dedicated people who proudly call themselves the SDT family. The benefit we want to bring you through this training is to gain knowledge and experience without having to make all the mistakes someone else has already made for you. The benefit WE want to bring you through this training is to learn from your success in the near future. And then there's the pleasure of sharing our passion with you.
Questioning the Approach Why do we lubricate the way we do? It's time to challenge traditional time-based approaches and assumptions-based methods. Accuracy in lubrication calculations depends on the quality of input data, often based on estimates. Wrong assumptions lead to costly errors. The time has come to shift towards an evidence-based approach in lubrication practices.
Contact SDT Ultrasound Solutions today to schedule your training and unlock the full potential of the LUBExpert Solution.
A Journey Toward Evidence-Based Lubrication Let's embark on a journey to implement a mindset that aligns lubrication practices with the principles of Condition Monitoring. Evidence-based lubrication is the answer, driven by three key questions: + + +
Does it need grease? How much grease does it need? Is the bearing better now?

Magnetic Bearings
Finnish cleantech company SpinDrive raises €3.8M to cut industrial energy waste and pollution with magnetic levitation bearings
SpinDrive will use the funds to boost its global growth, helping industrial machinery manufacturers affordably achieve higher energy efficiency and productivity by providing a frictionless alternative to high-maintenance, oil-dependent, and energy-wasting bearing technologies. The company will also develop a new range of Active Magnetic Bearings for new applications.
LAPPEENRANTA, Finland (November 8th, 2023) SpinDrive, a Finnish company providing affordable active magnetic bearings for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), has secured a €3.8M Series A funding round. The round was led by U.S.-based, hardware companies-focused investor Rhapsody Venture Partners, with existing investors Innovestor from Finland and Born2Grow from Germany also participating. The funding will enable SpinDrive to ramp up its commercial growth and improve industrial efficiency in factories worldwide.
sensors to monitor system health and reducing overall equipment maintenance costs by over 80% . “We have seen increasing international demand for more energy efficiency and cleaner solutions in industrial production, and we are excited to build SpinDrive to meet those customer needs with our active magnetic bearing systems and controllers. With its specialization in industrial technologies and global reach into industrial companies, Rhapsody Venture Partners is an ideal partner for us, and we’re thrilled to be working with them,” says Nikita Uzhegov, COO and Co-founder of SpinDrive.
SpinDrive’s frictionless bearings are smaller, more energy efficient, and more affordable than its competitors. The bearings work through magnetic levitation, where there is no contact between rotating and stationary parts. No friction means no bearing maintenance for up to 20 years, even in high-speed applications, meaning high rotational speeds and energy efficiency without the risk of equipment downtime or maintenance breaks.
Furthermore, the bearings require no oil to work, eliminating the need for polluting lubricants from industrial production. EU factories consume 5 million tons of oil-based lubricants each year, and traditional bearing-based machinery suffers from high leakage and contamination risk. This lubricant-free operation makes production significantly more ecological. It also allows manufacturers to enter new markets, such as food, beverage, pharma, semiconductors, and hydrogen-based production, where hygienic, contamination-free processing is essential.
In striking contrast, traditional ball bearings in industrial high-speed applications have a 12-18 month maintenance cycle, requiring bearing replacement. SpinDrive’s bearings also provide condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of the whole machine, removing the need to install external
Another significant advantage is the energy-saving capability of frictionless bearings. For example, large
104
machinery operating at 100kW to several MW requires considerable energy, and ball bearings limit machinery efficiency due to friction. Traditionally, OEMs’ use of AMB technology has been restricted by its size, cost, and complexity. By offering an affordable solution to overcome these limitations, SpinDrive’s AMBs and controllers enable manufacturers to reduce energy needs by as much as 15% by allowing increased rotational speeds in a vast array of systems beyond previously possible. This is a significant saving, as industrial electric motors currently stand for 46% of the world’s electricity consumption.
a massive area and provide a significant impact,” adds Janne Heikkinen, CEO and Co-founder of SpinDrive. The global bearing industry is currently worth €120bn. SpinDrive’s typical applications include turbo blowers, compressors, expanders, process machinery, flywheels, and energy recovery systems. High rotational speed yields high energy efficiency in transferring and compressing gases with turbo machinery, and frictionless operation cuts energy losses of spinning rotors. “We scour the world for great hard science breakthroughs and love innovations that sell. SpinDrive’s system is much cheaper and better than anything else in the market. We are excited to partner with the team and to help grow SpinDrive internationally. ” says Carsten Boers, Managing Partner at lead investor Rhapsody Venture Partners.
Improved energy efficiency is a key element in reducing industrial emissions. SpinDrive sees CO2 emission mitigation as one of its most significant contributions, and the company aims to help cut 500Mt of CO2 by 2050 annually by improving the energy efficiency of industrial machinery. New innovative technologies for fundamental machinery components, such as SpinDrive digital bearings, are essential in striving towards a carbon-negative future.
The company has raised a total of €8M to date from a syndicate of VCs and private investors, as well as public funding. SpinDrive has the most advanced control systems for active magnetic bearings, with customers in Finland, Germany, the USA, Denmark, France, Italy, China, and the United Kingdom. The company has offices in Finland and Germany. SpinDrive has seen significant improvements in efficiency in its cooperation with current clients, such as global pulp and paper vacuum solutions provider Runtech Systems.
“Climate change is the biggest challenge of our time, but we often get stuck thinking about technologies like carbon capture when it comes to CO2 emissions. Industrial production is a massive part of the world’s energy consumption and climate emissions, so we must create energy-efficient and clean components to turn this tide. By improving the energy efficiency in existing and new machinery, we tackle the problem in
105
“Active magnetic bearing technology is a major leap towards more sustainable papermaking, with a very affordable total cost of ownership. 1 MW unit offers an unbeatable small footprint and material efficiency combined with low energy consumption over the
product's lifetime. We look forward to deepening our cooperation with SpinDrive and continuing the application of Magma AMB controller in other machine models,” says Ville Lahdensuo, R&D Director at Runtech Systems.

Sustainable freshness protection for natural mineral water A noticeably longer sparkle: VILSA mineral water bottling plant relies on FreshSafe PET Plasmax coating technology from KHS for its non-returnable containers.
To date, the KHS coating of wafer-thin, chemically pure glass on the inside wall of PET bottles was primarily applied to improve the quality and shelf life of sensitive soft drinks and juice. VILSA-BRUNNEN Otto Rodekohr GmbH is now the first mineral water bottling plant to profit from Plasmax technology. With this, the family business is consistently investing in its product quality and the long-lasting freshness protection of its premium beverages – and in doing so is setting standards on the market.
With the new InnoPET FreshSafe block from KHS we’re now the first mineral water bottling plant to have the most innovative barrier technology available on the market – and thus the optimum packaging system for our valuable products.

+ VILSA-BRUNNEN Otto Rodekohr GmbH is the first mineral water bottling plant to profit from Plasmax Barrier technology from KHS, enabling the German beverage producer to continue its drive for sustainability.
The mineral water VILSA extracts from deep underground in Bruchhausen-Vilsen in the German federal state of Lower Saxony is over a thousand years old and naturally pure. Thick layers of clay protect the deep spring water from environmental impact and pollution. Through sustainable water ‘harvesting’ the mineral water bottling plant ensures that this precious resource is used in moderation and with great care. The company owes a lot to its natural surroundings – and wishes to give as much back, it claims. For Henning Rodekohr, CEO of the VILSA Group and a representative of the fourth generation of the family firm, the long-term protection of his spring is a fundamental concern. Besides premium mineral water containing various levels of carbon dioxide, the product portfolio also includes fruit spritzers, soda pop and near-water beverages.
subject to the strictest threshold values and highest sustainability standards commonly applied on the German mineral water market. The bottler has also been provably climate-neutral since 2021. By actively promoting various sustainability measures in agriculture, in cooperation with local farmers VILSA helps to maintain a high quality of the soil and groundwater in the vicinity of its spring. This striving to protect the local environment ultimately triggered the bottler’s decision to switch over to KHS Plasmax coating technology for all non-returnable containers used to fill the VILSA brand.
From the spring to natural enjoyment – perfectly conveyed taste The advantages are obvious: FreshSafe PET combines the low weight and robustness of the plastic container with the much better barrier properties of the glass bottle. The tried-and-tested system protects the

+ The designs of the 0.25-, 0.5-, 0.75 and 1-liter bottles were already suitable for coating; only the largest and thus most challenging container holding 1.5 liters had to undergo minor changes barely discernible to consumers to ensure its vacuum stability during the process. This makes it the very first 1.5-liter FreshSafe PET bottle on the market.
bottle against oxygen pickup and carbon dioxide loss, which both extends the shelf life and increases flavor stability. Moreover, FreshSafe PET also provides a number of key positives when it comes to establishing closed recycling loops. Unlike PET bottles that contain additives to improve the barrier effect and shelf life, the KHS equipment permits full bottle-to-bottle reuse as the interior coating is completely washed off during the recycling process. “Our consumers know that in VILSA they get a naturally pure, premium mineral water. We thus aim to give each product the best possible packaging regarding quality and sustainability,” says Henning Rodekohr. “By only using FreshSafe PET for our non-returnable containers in the future, we’re consciously exploiting the benefits of glass in relation to freshness and shelf life. Our products are therefore more effectively guarded against external influences and their flavor is even better assured.”
Optimum product protection Characteristic for VILSA mineral water are its pH, natural ingredients and gentle mineral content. This makes it a sensorily demanding product, however, that reacts extremely sensitively to offflavors or sunlight. Thanks to the wafer-thin barrier
of chemically pure glass in the containers, VILSA’s natural taste is now protected against oxygen pickup and loss of flavor and CO2 for a considerably longer period of time. The PET material also loses none of its proven benefits, meaning that consumers profit from top product quality.
Proved sustainable and safe Back in 2019 the Lower Saxon mineral water bottling plant switched the material of all of its non-returnable bottles over to [r]PET. In adding coating technology to its plant engineering setup, the company is now continuing its drive for sustainability. Both the EPBP (European PET Bottle Platform) and North America’s APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers) have confirmed that FreshSafe PET is fully recyclable. The container’s suitability for use with foods has also been officially established by the US Food and Drug Administration or FDA, among other institutions. As the interior glass coating is less than 0.1 micrometers thick and chemically bonded to the inside wall, it is flexible. It cannot be accidentally removed or flake off when force is applied to the bottle, with the coating only separating off during the recycling process. As the coating is also completely transparent, the PET bottles retain their crystal-clear appearance.

Intensive development process
Most innovative part of the system
The first coated bottles are now being distributed to retailers, with more and more consumers able to purchase the new style of packaging and test the noticeably longer fresh taste of VILSA beverages for themselves. The market launch was preceded by an intensive development process. Although a number of well-known bottlers of challenging sensitive products such as juice or carbonated soft drinks have relied on environmentally-friendly Plasmax barrier technology for years, its use for natural organic mineral water was new to the specialists from Dortmund. At a series of workshops on site the experts from KHS steadily worked to meet requirements in the runup to the launch of FreshSafe PET for all container sizes from 0.5 to 1.5 liters.
To start with, a latest-generation InnoPET Blomax stretch blow molder was installed that was combined with the barrier unit to form an InnoPET FreshSafe block during the later development process. Following preform infeed, stretch blow molding, cooling and transfer, the PET bottles are coated according to the PICVD1 method, a process first used in the pharmaceutical industry. Here, the containers are turned upside down and passed on to the coating chamber where a reaction gas mixture is introduced into the bottle in a fine vacuum and this subsequently transformed into a plasma state by microwaves. In this state silicon oxide – the chemically pure glass commonly found in most households – is deposited on the inside of the container. At VILSA bottles are stretch blow molded and coated at a maximum rate of 24,500 containers per hour. The most popular nonreturnable format is the 0.75-liter bottle.
Perfectly adapted recipe ensures high quality “We ran extensive simulations to effect an optimum separation behavior of the reaction gas in the coating process and thus achieve perfect distribution of the wafer-thin glass coating in the bottle,” explains Stefan Knappmann, head of Sales for Germany and Switzerland at KHS. “Our Bottles and Shapes specialists defined the exact recipe for each container size, product and carbon dioxide level.” “Our investment and trust in KHS thus take us a big step forward,” claims Henning Rodekohr. “We’re setting new standards on the market with respect to quality and sustainability.”
Pioneering achievement for premium beverages “With the new InnoPET FreshSafe block from KHS we’re now the first mineral water bottling plant to have the most innovative barrier technology available on the market – and thus the optimum packaging system for our valuable products,” smiles Henning Rodekohr. “We collect our water from its protected source deep under the ground in a way that’s sustainable and pass it on to our consumers in

a perfectly preserved state.” The plant’s personnel are still being trained and instructed by KHS employees on site, yet VILSA’s head of Production and Technology Joachim Weippert can already say that “The partnership with our colleagues from KHS has been and still is marked by a very high level of expertise and has proved extremely cooperative. The entire team got along very well throughout the entire development period, which is an important factor.”
Those involved at KHS are also extremely satisfied with the project and its outcome. “Once again, we’ve been able to demonstrate our expertise in PET and successfully implement a project together with the customer. This provides the perfect basis for future further developments in this field,” concludes Stefan Knappmann. 1

Pick and Place: Precise to the point 3D image processing solution with 2D cameras, AI and robotics optimises the manufacturing landscape

The manufacturing sector is currently facing a number of challenges. Technological change, pressing environmental issues and globalisation require a number of adjustments, such as investing in new technologies, conserving resources and optimising and securing supply chains. Globally operating companies have to face a changing environment and at the same time manage problems in supply chains. Shifting production back to the domestic market is increasingly an option. This requires not only resilience, but also compliance with strict environmental regulations and cost-efficient strategies to make domestic manufacturing competitive. Moreover, those who want to ensure the competitiveness of domestic production must overcome personnel bottlenecks. Automation through robotics has long since become the driving force here, and artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly taking on a key role. This technology is developing just as rapidly as the pressure for automation is increasing. In order to map production processes in one's own company with AI, the simplest possible AI integration and the shortening of training phases are already decisive factors.
This is where British start-up Cambrian Robotics Limited comes in with a fully AI-based solution for various robotics applications in manufacturing. It takes over fast bin picking or pick-and-place, the exact feeding of parts for machines as well as different work steps in material handling - for the benefit of more efficiency in assembly tasks or in warehouse logistics. The easy-tointegrate system consists of a module for robot arms, a computing unit with pre-installed intelligent software and a camera module, each equipped in series with two uEye+ XCP cameras from IDS. "The task of the cameras is to take a picture of the area with the objects to be handled. Based on the recordings, the software can analyse the scene and recognise where exactly the objects are located," explains Miika Satori, founder and CEO of Cambrian Robotics. Further processing of the images is carried out with the help of the heart of Cambrian Vision - a specially developed, self-learning software for predicting the position of the parts as well as their pick points. This takes care of the image matching on an AI basis, so that no classic 3D point cloud is needed.
+ A robotic arm locates and grips parts with the help of two IDS cameras and intelligent Cambrian software
123
+ Two IDS cameras on robot arm provide images for fast and accurate further processing using intelligent software
Based on simulated data, the AI learns independently and locates the removal points and parts extremely precisely. The AI models for part recognition and communication with the robot are controlled by a powerful GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). And the software learns quickly: "With the Cambrian software package, pick points for new parts can be defined and the application configured within just two to five minutes," emphasises start-up founder Satori.
says Miika Satori, describing the special requirements for the cameras, which are an elementary part of the solution. "It's also super-fast, with an inference speed of less than 170 milliseconds, whereas it often takes more than 1000 milliseconds for comparable solutions." The fast calculation time allows cycle times of two to three seconds in a bin-picking setting. "This ensures efficient, precise and accurate execution in a single pass," Miika Satori underlines. This makes the One-Shot system currently one of the fastest AI image recognition systems on the market.
The associated camera module is equipped with two space-saving uEye XCP industrial cameras. "The two IDS cameras provide images of the object scene from different viewing angles according to the stereo vision principle. The challenge is to determine the position of the part to be gripped as accurately as possible from these images. This is again the task of AI," says Miika Satori. The combination of image acquisition, AI models and special image processing makes it possible to determine recording points and positions particularly precisely. "Standard CAD applications for 3D bin picking often use structured light or sensors to do this, projecting something onto the environment, creating a point cloud and then trying to find the part in it. Cambrian uses only two standard IDS industrial cameras instead of a 3D camera.
This is made possible not least by the SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps cameras, which reliably deliver highresolution data for detailed image evaluations in any environment, explicitly in applications with low ambient light or changing light conditions. Thanks to BSI ("Back Side Illumination") pixel technology, the integrated sensor (1/2.5" 5.04 MPixel rolling shutter CMOS sensor onsemi AR0521) offers stable low-light performance as well as high sensitivity in the NIR (near infrared) range, so that the uEye XCPs deliver high-quality images in almost any lighting situation - with low pixel noise at the same time. With its compact, lightweight full housing (29 x 29 x 17 millimetres, 61 grams) and screwable USB Micro-B connector, the USB3 XCP is particularly suitable for use in combination with robots and cobots in the field of automation.
With an accuracy of less than one millimetre, Cambrian Vision is also much more precise than competing systems. "The system reliably detects a wide range of parts, including shiny, reflective or transparent components, where conventional machine vision systems often reach their limits. At the same time, it remains robust against external light conditions,"
Thanks to USB3 and Vision Standard compatibility (U3V / GenICam), the XCP cameras can be easily integrated into any image processing system and can basically be used with any suitable software.

improving the quality of their products and the safety of their employees.
Outlook
+ A powerful CPU controls the AI models for part recognition and communication with the robot
"The use of AI in robotics is still in its infancy," says Miika Satori. Due to the growing demand, the development in the field of image processing with AI will be further advanced, cameras with higher data rates and faster and larger sensors will come onto the market, as well as further price-optimised models with reliable basic functions. "Industrial cameras are getting smaller and more affordable. This will enable even more applications. Our vision is to give robots capabilities on the same level as humans." By using AI-powered robots for mundane and repetitive tasks, human resources can be redirected to more creative, productive and valuable tasks.
The simple integration via the standard interface is particularly advantageous for Miika Satori: "Depending on the customer's requirements, we use other IDS cameras in our system. The standardised interface enables rapid deployment of a wide variety of uEye models." Compatible with popular lenses, a wide range of cameras from the IDS portfolio can be used as eyes for custom Cambrian Vision solutions, helping to maximise production performance.
The top speed, the particularly high light insensitivity and the wide component bandwidth that the system achieves thanks to the powerful IDS cameras and intelligent software make it particularly interesting for automation tasks in the production environment.
Client By combining robotics and artificial intelligence, Cambrian Robotics is developing a productive tool that replaces human hands in the manufacturing of products. With the help of intelligent automation, costs are to be reduced and people are to be given more time for meaningful tasks. Cambrian Vision is a fully AI-based solution for various robotics applications in manufacturing such as bin picking, assembly, feature recognition and localisation, pick and place, placement, wire harness and cable assembly.
Another key to efficiency lies in the uncomplicated integration of Cambrian Vision. The intelligent 3D vision system is ready for immediate use without any real robot training - a remarkable acceleration compared to conventional methods. Companies can therefore quickly reap the benefits of automation: They conserve resources and save costs by operating more efficiently, competitively and sustainably, while

BEARING WORLD 2024 > INTERNATIONAL BEARING CONFERENCE
VISIT, SHARE, AND DISCUSS
PRIMARY TOPICS
Ladies and gentlemen,
BEARING WORLD focuses on all facets of bearings and all involved components, with special emphasis on rolling bearings – in combination with or comparison to plain or magnetic bearings.
the conference for you to exchange your knowledge with the bearing community. It takes place from 25 – 26 June, 2024 in Würzburg. In technology, wherever there is movement, rolling element and plain bearings are essential. Bearings transmit operating forces between moving machine components – and therefore play a crucial role in the functionality, efficiency, and service life of the overall machine or system. The stresses on rolling bearings in particular are very high, and will continue to increase in the future. As will expectations of reliability. Therefore, appropriate bearing selection and dimensioning as well as the optimal design of the bearing environment are indispensable. This requires constant growth in expertise based on practical experience and scientific knowledge. Be part of it and submit today at bearingworld.org! Contribute to the program by providing your knowledge – and take advantage of the opportunity to share information! We look forward to receiving your proposals. The BEARING WORLD Program Committee

To ensure that BearingNews and Motion+Drives magazines are doing their part to protect the environment, the parent company, iMotion Media, has developed a strategy to offset the carbon footprint of its printed magazines. The twofold approach includes a fully supported tree planting campaign in conjunction with each newly released edition, and the use of recycled paper in the printing process. Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword. Members of the globalcommunity have become increasingly aware of human impact on the environment. As a result, a massive movement is driving private sector companies to responsibly manage their environmental, economic, and social resources to safeguard the well-being of future generations. The term ‘sustainability’ encompasses a large swath of efficiency objectives that aim to go beyond the thresholds of carbon neutrality. Companies must fulfill further economic and social obligations by devising less wasteful practices. When discussing the printing of magazines, there is long-term value achieved by responsibly implementing environmentally friendly solutions associated with the use of paper. The paper industry has focused its efforts on the sustainability of raw materials, processes, and products. Highlighted
within the industry’s strategy is the promotion of sustainable forestry practices and responsibly harvesting renewable raw materials. Tree planting is considered one of the most effective ways to combat global warming, as forests naturally reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) by removing it from the air through photosynthesis. In line with this strategy, iMotion Media has adopted ‘tree planting for reforestation’ as the most effective method to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the printing and distribution of Bearing News and Motion+Drives magazines. In careful coordination with the release of each printed edition, a tree planting campaign will be launched to help restore forests and offset the use of natural wood materials used in paper production. In addition, iMotion Media is supporting the use of recycled paper in the printing process to reduce dependence on new materials. It will also continue to promote the currently available digital magazine options.
Thanks to the use of recycled paper and certified companies dedicated to carefully managing wood harvesting, there has been a decline in global deforestation. And while there are positives to both recycled paper and the responsible production of new paper, recycled material contributes significantly more to global social and economic sustainability goals.
iMotion Media is happy to be a part of a forward-thinking movement with ambitions for a greener future. Through its broad reach within the Bearing. Power Transmission, and Motion Control Industries, iMotion Media intends to create an infectious optimism that will compound progress towards greater sustainability.
