The start of a new year is an exciting time with many possibilities. However, at this time of year our inboxes and social media feeds are inundated with messages of improving yourself in 2020; ‘New Year, New You’ is the message we’re fed, often by faceless people who don’t even know the ‘old’ you. Whilst it’s easy to get sucked into the pressure of becoming a ‘better’ you, and there could be things that you’d like to change about yourself – perhaps in the form of living a healthier lifestyle – often there is no need for a ‘new you’, you are doing just fine as you are. In our busy lives, there’s no need to create added pressure, stress or anxiety because it’s seen as the social norm at the start of a new year.

Being kind to ourselves is something many of us struggle with. We spend our days caring for others, letting them offload during their appointment, nurturing their wellbeing with the aim of hoping they leave the salon feeling 100% better than when they arrived. But do you invest time and energy caring for yourself? This issue I’m delighted to reveal our latest columnist, Candice Gardner of The International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica, who starts 2020 with some fantastic advice on self-care. As she explains, dedicating time to looking after yourself is not selfish, it’s vital for your mental and physical wellbeing, as well as making sure you can perform as a therapist to your very best abilities. It’s well worth taking time to absorb her words of wisdom on page 56. Take this opportunity to put your feet up, relax and celebrate just how amazing you are, just by being you. Best wishes

By all means, keep to the resolutions you made on 31st December if they make you feel better about yourself, I’m not down on self-improvement, but remember to do it for yourself, not because it’s expected of you.

Ireland’s top 10 lucrative salon locations revealed

The ten most lucrative counties where you should run a salon or spa have been revealed. According to research conducted by Phorest Salon Software, taken from a sample of 1,000 of Ireland’s salons and spas, Monaghan, one of the country’s largest cities, tops the chart with salons located there making an average of €481,534 in revenue over the last 12 months. This is followed by Limerick, with salons there taking in an average of €466,659, followed by Dublin in third place with average revenues of €463,394. Completing the top 10 are Westmeath (€449,941), Cork (€418,415), Donegal (€401,095), Kerry (€399,340), Carlow (€392,680), Louth (€389,299) and Kildare (€374,268). Most lucrative locations to run a salon or spa:

Phorest appoint new General Manager

Celia Rose has been appointed General Manager UK & Ireland for salon software company, Phorest. Former Dermalogica executive Celia was with the skincare giant for 25 years, and was instrumental in taking the brand from a start-up position in the UK and Ireland to market leader. She previously launched her own eponymous brand of cosmetics in the 1990s. An entrepreneur by nature, Celia has been on the Phorest board for nearly two years, during which time the company has seen rapid expansion growing to a client base of 4,000 salons. Commenting in her new role as Phorest’s General Manager for UK and Ireland, Celia Rose says: “Phorest has been a phenomenal success story in recent years and I’m really excited to be driving the next phase of growth in the UK and Ireland, two vital markets that represent both my home and the home of the Phorest brand.

1. Monaghan

6. Donegal

2. Limerick

7. Kerry

3. Dublin

8. Carlow

4. Westmeath

9. Louth

5. Cork

10. Kildare

Commenting on the findings, Ronan Perceval, CEO of Phorest Salon Software, says: “We hope this information helps would-be salon owners to see if they can afford to take the plunge and open a salon in their city, or current salon owners to find the right spot to expand. Of course revenue is only one side of profitability - you also need to take into account costs like rent and salaries in each county to make sure it works for you - but knowing the average revenue you can expect can help you work out the kind of rent and other overheads you can afford.”

“My primary goal is to continue to build upon delivering the Phorest mission to our growing client base: to get their clients back in more often, spending more and generating referrals.” Celia Rose is pictured with Phorest Founder, Ronan Perceval.

Harley Wax reveal new Lavender Film Wax

Harley Wax have launched their latest waxing collection, The Harley Film Wax range, with Harley Lavender Film Wax. This hybrid wax provides the comfort and easy application of a traditional hot wax coupled with the thin ‘spread-ability’ of a strip wax. It is a technologically advanced wax and can be heated faster with a lower melting temperature. This new generation wax is ideal for waxing on sensitive areas including facial waxing to intimate Brazilians and Hollywoods, with the strength and pliability to remove hairs as short as 1mm, eliminating the need to tweeze. It can also be applied extremely thinly, as you would with a strip wax, and doesn’t require any strips to remove, making it economical. The Harley Lavender Film Wax is formulated with colophony (Pine resin) and CERA ALBA (Bees wax), natural ingredients which produce a wax with a strong grip, that is not brittle and very pliable. The Lavandula Angustifolia in the wax has anti-septic and anti-inflammatory properties for a hygienic and calming hair removal treatment that will not leave the skin red and inflamed.

Smart Meso launched for hair & skin treatments

The Smart Group is introducing Smart Meso, a needle-free mesotherapy device with electroporation for both skin rejuvenation and hair restoration. The Smart Meso device comes with a range of high-tech serums to use on the face and scalp. During the treatment, tiny fractional pins attached to a device-head puncture the skin to a depth of 0.5mm (or less), at the same time injecting the specialised serum where it works on a cellular level, within the upper layers of the dermis. The fractional pins also help to boost collagen and elastin too. At the same time, patented electroporation technology sends a small electrical current into the skin, breaking down the cellular adhesion molecules, making the skin more receptive to the serum’s potent ingredients by up to 86%. The treatment is said to be virtually painless, and studies have shown that when used for hair loss treatment, Smart Meso thickened hair in both men and women in as little as three weeks. As well as hair loss, Smart Meso also treats dry and dehydrated skin, pigmentation, ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, and dull skin. The Smart Group: www.the-smartgroup.co.uk

E

yelash treatments are constantly evolving, from traditional strip lashes through to individual lashes and clusters, and semi-permanent lifting techniques.

“For a little longer wear, cluster lashes have always been a very popular choice and a great salon treatment, and we have seen a change in the traditional fan,” says Lisa.

No longer are lash treatments considered a luxury for a special occasion, lash lifting and enhancements are now a standard treatment for many clients who would not consider going without an infill, and a good revenue generator for salons, spas and mobile therapists.

Applying individual or cluster lashes onto natural lashes can be a lengthy process, so it’s important you make the experience as pleasant as possible for clients, in which case it can be very relaxing.

Lisa Stone, Lash Expert and Salon System Educator, says: “Lashes have never been so popular and lash services are in high demand, there has never been so much choice. The industry is filled with lash choices to suit a client’s individual taste and style.” “[For 2020] trends will still be soft and full of the trend on cutting and layering,” says Ruth Atkins, Lash Expert and Salon System Educator. “Lashlift will continue with its popular revival and with time poor clients, the need for speed is more evident than ever.”

Strip lashes Strip lashes offer a great, temporary option, especially for special occasions or nights out. Today’s strip lashes are versatile and reusable, with adhesives, or even magnets, that are enduring whilst being kind to the skin. Strip lashes offer a great retail opportunity for salons and mobile therapists. Considering offering an application service when clients buy the lash sets from you as an enticement.

Individual & cluster lashes For a more permanent look, eyelash enhancements featuring individual and cluster or fan lashes are ever-growing in popularity. They are so many looks that can be achieved, from the new natural-looking British Lash from Lash Perfect, through to the popular voluminous and dramatic Russian lash look.

Whilst the treatment can be time-consuming, undergoing professional training in the lash system you are offering will ensure you use the products correctly, especially adhesives, and the more treatments you carry out, the faster and more proficient you will get. During consultation prior to carrying out the treatment, be sure to discuss the final look that your client hopes to achieve. Consider practicalities, such as whether they wear glasses which can influence who long the lashes should be.

Lash lifting For clients who like a totally natural-looking result without the application of strip or individual enhancements, lash lifting is a great option. This is a treatment which has evolved over the years, and is more advanced than traditional eyelash perming. Lash lifting curls and lifts individual eyelashes from the root to not only make each lash look longer but also opens up the eye for a more youthful appearance; lash perming is still a popular treatment, delivering a curl to the lashes. Lisa Stone, Lash Expert and Salon System Educator, says: “Lash extensions have come on so much and with an extensive range of curls and thicknesses to create natural to intense volume looks, lash extensions are now soft and fluffy with mink style effects. “All the above lashes are great for creating the latest lash trends, which is great news as lashes are going to be big and bold in 2020 with the heavy mascara look being a big trend. And the catwalks have created the “twiggy” look, which will be a prominent look for 2020.”

........................................................................................................................... Skincare: Protecting Skin Against HEV Light

the blue Protecting skin against High Energy Visible light damage

W

e all know the damage that UV rays can do to skin, accelerating the effects of ageing, but skin experts are reporting an increasing need to protect against High Energy Visible light (HEV) more commonly referred to as blue light, emitted from devices such as computer screens, phones and tablets as well as fluorescent lighting and natural daylight. This high-frequency, high-energy light penetrates skin from 380 to 500 nanometres through to the hypodermis – the cells immediately below the epidermis – causing an inflammatory effect resulting in loss of moisture, leading to premature ageing, wrinkle formation, uneven texture and loss of skin tone. It should be noted that damage from High Energy Visible Light is caused through constant exposure, common due to our modern lifestyles which require us to sit in front of flatscreen monitors day after day, communicate via our smartphones and entertain ourselves with our tablets. Blue light emitting diodes (LED) used in the salon for the phototherapy treatment of acne is delivered in short treatment sessions, and this is not thought to cause the damaging effects of our daily exposure to HEV light.

“High-energy visible light is the blue light which is primarily from the sun, but it’s also emitted from your smartphone, laptops and computer screens,” explains Clare O’Hanlon, Business Development Director, Boost Beauty Solutions. “We all know how damaging the sun is with the UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays but the HEV light is just as destructive to our skin! And I am also hoping by now you know even when the sun is behind the clouds it’s still damaging to us.”

“We already know that stress is a silent ager, and so is sun damage. Now there is evidence to suggest that blue light from all the screens we’re exposed to on a daily basis may cause long-term ageing as well,” says Noella Gabriel, Elemis President and Co-Founder. “It’s not enough to protect our skin from UVA/UVB rays. The average person looks at their phone 157 times per day.”

Protection from HEV light damage With so much reliance on technology, it’s not practical to tell clients to stop using their devices, although limiting exposure is of course helpful, so how can you protect yours and your clients’ skins from HEV light? Clare O’Hanlon offers some expert tips: “Firstly, and most importantly is wear an SPF, not just any SPF but one that is broad spectrum and has anti-oxidants in it. “Consider wearing yellow tinted glass if you spend many hours in front of the computer screen or iPad. This glass will block out the blue light, protecting your eyes and while outside opt for wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from all UV exposure.” “Another important step to take is to use Vitamin C in your skincare, this powerful antioxidant helps fight free radicals which include HEV and helps to heal and repair the skin. Vitamin C also stimulates the production of collagen which HEV damages. “If we do not take these important steps, our skin will pay the consequences. UV damage accounts for 70% of skin ageing, ageing on the skin results in loss of elasticity, wrinkle development, sun/age spots and skin loses its vitality. “So next time you think of taking a selfie, or are at your computer desk, protect yourself from photoageing!”

With many clients choosing to switch from traditional paint and polish to now well-established gel polish systems for their regular manicure or pedicure, there is an abundance of brands to choose from. An increasing number of salons are choosing to offer polishes from more than one brand, providing clients with a wider choice of colours and finishes to choose from, along with treatments at differing price points. Gel polish is so versatile and long-lasting, it’s clear to see why it has become a salon staple. Whether it’s used for manicures or pedicures, nail art or French finishes, as a service it is fast, reliable and safe on the nails, and encourages repeat custom. Nail bars, salons and spas are now offering colour manis from market-leading ‘big hitters’ such as CND™ Shellac, OPI GelColor and Gelish and extending their offering further by stocking a second, or even a third, product line. If you choose to offer more than one branded system in your salon, all treatments should be completed following the manufacturer’s guidelines and training, ensuring that two different brand systems aren’t combined in one treatment. This not only prevents product performance being compromised, but also means that you won’t invalidate your professional insurance. This is also important as clients must get the treatment they are paying for. Don’t market a treatment as one brand but introduce products from another manufacturer; be clear with clients what products or brands you are using, after all, that is what they are paying for. This also gives you the opportunity to create a treatment menu at two price points – one as a luxury manicure and one more affordable. We’ve rounded up some the lesser known Gel Polishes, available to salons across Ireland…

The GelBottle Inc™ offers range over 360 unique colours as well as Builder In A Bottle™ and GelPot builder gel systems, with new products launched monthly. The brand also offers a non-wipe topcoat. The gels come in a 20ml salon-sized bottles, with each delivering up to 100 sets of nails. Liz McKeon: Whats is your Exit Strategy?..................................................................................................................................

When the time comes to move on from your business, do you have a plan? Liz McKeon explains your options.

Liz McKeon (www.lizmckeon.com) is a successful Business Coach, Trainer, Author and Mentor, whose expertise lies in growing small businesses from scratch and taking existing companies to profitability.

What is your

exit

I

strategy?

n challenging times, it’s important to think about the future and what you plan for the future of your business.

There will come a time when it doesn’t suit your current life situation, whether that’s due to family or financial changes or you may be ready to retire or even switch to another business. Every salon owner needs an exit strategy, because at some point, for whatever reason, it will be time to move on from your business. When thinking about and planning your exit strategy, the two most fundamental questions to ask yourself are: 1. How am I going to get my money out of the business? 2. How much money will I get? It is advisable to plan your preferred exit strategy well in advance, as it can be a lengthy process. There are also many options available to you as a business owner, some more easily achieved and less administratively challenging than others. Here are some options to consider:

Liquidation This is the ‘close up shop and sell all the assets’ exit strategy. For a very small salon, especially those that are dependent on the performance of a single individual, liquidation is sometimes the only option, as there’s really nothing else to sell. It might be advisable to restructure the salon so it can be operated by somebody else, turning it into a salon for sale.

Keeping your business in the family This is the dream of many salon owners, as keeping your business in the family ensures that your legacy lives on and provides a living for your heirs.

54

The advantages to this are you may be able to keep a hand in the business in an advisory capacity. However, you need to know that the family members have the skill, interest and commitment to take over.

Sell your business to your manager/employee This is ideal, as the employee gets an established business that they are familiar with and enthusiastic about. It’s possible to arrange a long-term buyout, which can increase loyalty and greatly motivate staff to work hard to make the business succeed. Again, this arrangement may allow for you to stay on in an advisory capacity. Handled carefully, this option should have very little impact on clients.

Sell your business on the open market This is the most popular exit strategy option for salon businesses. The business owner puts the salon up for sale for a certain price, and hopefully walks away with the amount of money they want to get for it. A profitable, well run salon should be attractive to buyers and sell quickly. Assets, database, salon name and good will can be incorporated when valuing the business for sale, maximising the return to the owner. However, salon businesses can be difficult to value and the selling price may be much lower than expected. If this is your preferred exit strategy, spend time grooming your salon for sale, making it as attractive as possible to potential buyers. Whichever exit strategy you choose, planning in advance gives you time to do it right – and maximise your return on investment.

................................................................................................................................. Liz McKeon: Whats is your Exit Strategy?

To get the best price when selling a salon: • Sell at the right time, for the right reasons otherwise a buyer will use your circumstances to leverage against you. • Determine what your salon is actually worth; invest in a professional valuation, while accepting that your salon is worth as much as it will fetch in the marketplace. • Make sure your house is in order. People want to buy a thriving salon business, not a neglected one.

“Whichever exit strategy you choose, planning in advance gives you time to do it right”

• Keep all business records up to date • Make sure the premises is well maintained and attractive to potential buyers

Candice Gardner Writes: Self-Care for Therapists......................................................................................................................

Self-Care is not Make a commitment to yourself to restore your own wellbeing each week, says Candice Gardner.

A

s part of this industry it comes naturally to most therapists to give of themselves. Our time, our intention and our energy all play a significant role in the treatments and services we offer. It is important to us to deliver on our services in a way that energises and rebalances our clients both physically and mentally. This is not simply good for business, but it resonates with a sense of higher purpose, our society contribution to improving wellness, reducing stress and restoring self-confidence through the extraordinary power of human connection. And yet the desire to improve the wellbeing of our clients should not overshadow our own wellbeing. You cannot give what you don’t have. Recognising our privilege of human connection and physical touch in a digital world could lead you to feel guilty about prioritising your own needs. Even though this commitment to connection is the very essence of what makes us so good at what we do, forgetting about ourselves can lead to being ’missing in action’ – a therapist on autopilot, driven by process or protocols, disengaged from the important connection of their work due to burn out. Sadly, some may even leave the industry. If you are low on energy and out of balance yourself, it is really not possible to give your best. And if you only ever give without recharging yourself, the consequences may even be longer term illness and disease. What makes our industry so powerful is the skill and breadth of techniques that can be offered to restore mental and physical balance, rebuild self-confidence and support wellbeing. When it comes to offering advice on taking time out for self-care, our profession is certainly on it. How about taking some of your own advice and make time for your own self-care?

What sort of activities and commitments can you make to yourself? Here are some suggestions to support your physical wellbeing and your mental wellbeing.

remedies to the demands made on us through our daily life, in order to be able to provide outstanding treatments that have real wellbeing value.

Develop occupational consciousness

Try getting a bit of fresh air. “Re-wilding” is a trend that takes you outdoors to reconnect with nature. The newly published Pinterest 100 Report (determining trends based on what we’re all searching for) sees “Re-wilding” emerge as a huge trend. From nature travel to learning bush crafts, there has been a huge rise in seeking time outdoors. “Nature is the perfect antidote to digital fatigue, artificial lighting and sitting culture,” says the report. “Getting outside can lower stress and increase energy”.

Being a practicing skin or wellbeing therapist means you are well aware of the impact of poor posture, repetitive movements or tasks, and badly designed spaces. The first step in your self-care is to reassess your workspace and look at how you can make the space better for yourself. Whilst you may not be able to make costly changes to a space, it is possible to address repositioning of trolleys or machines for better access, and adjusting treatment bed and chair heights to reduce awkward or strained movements. As well as being much more conscious of your environment, you can also become more conscious of your body. Listen to your body carefully. Refuel and hydrate regularly to ensure you maintain energy through the day. Prepare your hands, arms and body with stretches and warm up exercises each day. Taking five minutes each morning will help you to prolong your career.

Book a regular treatment

Big holidays or camping trips aren’t the only way to enjoy the great outdoors. Going for a walk in the woods or on the beach, visiting local gardens or taking a more ambitious hike are all ways to be in the open with nature. The National Trust for Ireland has many options around the country to enjoy. Another practice that has grown in popularity is mindfulness. Described as paying attention to the present moment with intention and without judgement, mindfulness clears the psyche of the anxieties of past and future. Actively spending time in the present using mindfulness techniques has demonstrated many tangible benefits. According to studies mindfulness can boost your immune system, useful in reducing work related illness. It has also been shown to improve concentration whilst reducing over thinking that can lead to increased stress and mental health concerns.

“how about taking some of your own advice and make time for your own self-care”

Practicing what you preach is another way that you can address your own skin and body health and wellbeing. There are additional benefits to receiving treatments and therapies regularly, like being more in tune with the client experience, but the key is to remind yourself of the value of receiving a treatment, which means you will likely be better at making time for them. Select treatments and therapy techniques based on your personal needs and preferences so that you can maximise the benefit.

Get some headspace Our mental wellness determines how we interact with people. With human interaction at the core of what we do, it is vital for us, our clients and our business that we take steps to redress shifts in our state of mind. A calm, positive experience and supportive environment are essential ingredients of a really great service. Our clients need us to be in the right place (mentally and emotionally) when they come to see us. We need to find

Using mindfulness can help you to regulate your emotions. This can be extremely useful for the professional therapist. This technique is an effective strategy for maintaining a calm and positive outset. Avoid bringing the frustrations of the previous day or client to your next treatment, and limit stress or anxiety about the next treatment. The result will mean a much better experience for the client and a better day for you. Remember self-care is not selfish. Make a commitment to yourself to actively plan and schedule ways to restore your own wellbeing each week. You will be rewarded with a healthier and more fulfilling career. Your clients will certainly thank you for it too.

Beauty Talk...........................................................................................................................................................................

Emma James, Digital Marketing and Communications Executive at Flair Hair & Beauty Supplies, talks with the best in the beauty business.

Beauty Talk Nail technician and Educator Catherine Lavelle owns and runs CL Nail Studio, Galway.

Hi Catherine, lovely to meet you. Tell us a little about yourself and how you first became interested in beauty. “I was born in London and moved to Barna, Co. Galway when I was eight years old. I went to primary school in Barna and secondary school in Salthill. At a young age, I began working Saturdays in a local hairdressing salon. After four years of working there I went to hairdressing college in GTI Galway for a year. “My interest in beauty came from my job working in the local salon. I studied for a year in the School of Make Up Artistry in Galway. I then proceeded to complete my first nail course in ASU Dublin.”

Tell me more about where you studied nails and courses you’ve completed to date. “After completing my first nail course in ASU, I went on to do many more courses with them such as CND, Crystal Nails, Young Nails, 1:1 Nail Masters, Indigo Nails, Kinetic Nails, IBX and Purple Professional.”

When did you decide to open CL Nail Studio in Barna, Co. Galway? “After I qualified as a Nail Technician, I was mobile for two years. I loved it but going from house to house can be time consuming. In

60

2012, premises became available and I decided I wanted to open my own studio. I was still working in my local SuperValu whilst I built up a steady clientele, I used this as a platform to promote myself andmy business.”

Describe your typical week… “I’m five years in my salon now, I work alone in the studio as a nail technician so in a typical week I have about 10 clients a day.

Where do you get your inspiration from for nail trends? “I get inspiration every day fashion trends, magazines, online and catwalk such as London, Milan and New York Fashion Week.”

How has social media impacted you and your business?

“I work Tuesday to Saturday and open late three nights a week. I have many different treatments available from nail repair to shellac and gel or acrylic nails. People prefer all different styles and so I try to cater for this.”

“Social Media is huge at the moment and I find it to be very positive. It has given me a platform to promote my business and opened new business opportunities up for me! Instagram especially is a big support for me as it allows me to visually showcase my work.”

You’re a self-employed woman in business. Tell me more about this?

Do you get time to network with other women in business?

“Being self-employed is challenging because I am the sole earner and need to cover all overheads; it also means putting in a lot of work with little time off. However, I have a deep passion for nails and that keeps me motivated! “I set goals every year and I am very strict with myself to reach them! I always target three upskilling courses a year to stay on top of my trade and I enter nail competitions each year too. I have entered a nail competition for this year and have already started preparing for it. For me, being self-employed allows me to work flexible hours and is very rewarding!”

“I network with other woman in business through social media platforms, word of mouth and networking events.”

Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to me today. Before I go, I’d like to know have you any advice for anyone thinking of starting their own business? “When starting your own business, you need a lot of passion and drive. Mostly be consistent in your work and advertising!” Visit Flair’s social media to learn about upcoming classes with Catherine Lavelle (FlairHairAndBeautySupplies).
