As I write, we’re bathed in glorious sunshine, although who knows how long this will last! Summer rays are renowned for making us feel better; spending time outdoors is good for the soul. Plus, we know that we need Vitamin D, produced by the body after exposure to UVB rays from the sun, for good bone health and for our bodies to function healthily. However, I don’t need to remind you how quickly unprotected skin can burn. It’s a fine balance but just a few minutes’ exposure can make your daily Vitamin D requirement and, say the Vitamin D Council, pale skins produce vitamin D more quickly than darker skins. According to the World Health Organisation, during summer months, 5 to 15 minutes exposure to the face, hands and arms, two to three times a week, is adequate. If Erythema (skin reddening) occurs, skin has been overexposed and is being damaged, changing the genetic material within skin cells which can cause skin cancer, as well leaving skin dehydrated.
This is why, both as a professional in our industry and an individual, you need to understand how to keep exposed skin, including the scalp, protected and healthy. You are in the perfect position to pass on this information to your clients, keeping them healthy too. The Marie Keating Foundation has some brilliant information on their website, which includes wearing a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and protection against UVA rays, as does the Irish Cancer Society. Follow the SunSmart code, which includes applying half a teaspoon of sunscreen to each arm, the face, neck and ears, and a full teaspoon to each leg, the back and front of the body. For however long summer stays with us, and even on the cloudiest days, make SPF application part of yours, and your clients’, daily routines, so that we can all enjoy the benefits of being outdoors without any nasty consequences. Best wishes

Data shows key trends in online appointment bookings
Nearly half (46%) of treatment appointment bookings take place whilst salons and spas are closed, according to new research. Data from Phorest Salon Software also shows that 43% of Generation Z (18-24 year olds) expect salons and spas to offer an online booking service, and 36% of millennials (25-34 year olds) wanting to book online via a salon’s website. Hourly booking trends of 5,000 salons and spas were initially analysed by Phorest, followed by a survey of 1,000 salon and spa customers. Data showed that 28% of appointment bookings occur in the evening after salons close, with 18% taking place before salons open in the morning. Commenting on the research, Ronan Perceval, CEO, Phorest Salon Software, says: “This is really important information for salon and spa owners, particularly those whose customers are in this younger demographic. Recent research shows millennials are earning more than ever before, and enjoy spending their cash online, so if you’re looking to attract these demographics with ever-growing disposable income, it’s vital to get online booking live for your salon. “Your customers have busy days with work and family, and even the 54% of bookings that happen during working hours are taking place on the go, or in busy workplaces. Online booking gives them the option to book an appointment on their time, before they miss out on the last appointment with you and have to go to your competitor.”

For many years we have worked closely with the top music events and it was at last year’s Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball that Rita first experienced an hour’s Lava Shells massage with one of our Lava Angels. Dermalogica campaign to end acne stigma Skin experts Dermalogica have revealed their #skindividual campaign, teaming up with Georgia ‘Toff’ Toffolo, to reduce the stigma around acne.
Alongside Toff, the campaign features Beauty Editor, Amerley Ollenu, and actor, Liam Lau Fernandez, each of whom share their personal skin story along with un-retouched photographs. Dermalogica hope that this will help to normalise the conversation around acne, breakouts and scaring, and educate people of all ages on how to achieve healthy skin. Commenting on the #skindividual campaign, Sally Penford, Dermalogica’s Director of Education, says: “Acne and breakouts affect women and men of all ages, not only teenagers. Research shows that adult acne is caused by intrinsic and extrinsic factors many of which can be managed. People put extreme pressure on themselves to have flawless and ‘picture perfect’ skin.” “It’s no wonder that they’re struggling with skinconfidence. By sharing real skin stories, and celebrating real, unfiltered skin, we hope to help people find skin-confidence, knowing that there’s no such thing as ‘perfect’ skin. Instead, we’re striving to help people achieve their optimum skin health, just like we’ve championed since 1986.” Georgia ‘Toff’ Toffolo adds: “I love Dermalogica because I know it’s rooted in science. Their skin therapists are extensively trained, have a real understanding of the skin and have expertly prescribed a routine for my individual skin needs. They have helped me to achieve the healthiest skin I’ve ever had and I feel totally confident when recommending them to my friends, family and fans.” Dermalogica’s #skindividual campaign coincides with the brand’s launch of two new products in the Active Clearing range - AGE Bright Clearing Serum and AGE Bright Spot Fader – along with the introduction of Clear Start Clearing Defense SPF30.

Matis wins SensiBiotic Cream innovation award
Matis’ SensiBiotic Cream from their Réponse Délicate range has received the Pierantoni Award, an award which pays tribute to Humbert Pierantoni, creator of the International Congress of Applied Aesthetics and accompanying trade publication, Les Nouvelles Esthétiques. A jury of beauty journalists, doctors, dermatologists, cosmetologists, educators and beauty therapists voted for the product. Drawing on inspiration from the latest advances in research into the skin’s microbiome, Matis SensiBiotic Cream re-balances bioflora and preserves the skin barrier. Jean François Fidalgo, CEO of Matis, comments: “This award… is a wonderful accolade for which we are very proud, as this is a real Matis innovation. What is more, there are still very few products on the cosmetics market that take skin’s microbiome into account. RefectoCil opens lash & brow bar in Vienna Lash and brow tint brand RefectoCil has opened its first Lash & Brow Bar in Vienna, Austria.
The location has been launched by GW Cosmetics CEO, Rainer Deisenhammer, and Ultimativ Group’s Andreas and Patrick Raitz, and represents a new beauty concept in Austria. It offers brow and lash styling, a false lash detox treatment, brow treatments for under 18s, and a ‘Brows For Him’ service. Featuring black, pink, pistachio and rosé floral décor and three treatment chairs, the lash and brow bar was developed as a signature project based on designs by creative director Andi Lackner and Make-Up & Brow Artist Alma Milcic, in association with RefectoCil. Alma Milcic, also the face of the campaign, says: “Eyebrows are an essential part of the face and can have a huge positive influence on the overall expression and vibe. Styling and caring for natural brows and lashes in the right way improves well-being and brings out the qualities and individuality of the face shape. The hype around tattoo brows, fake lashes and over-plucking has long gone and been replaced by a natural look which above all relies on shaping, the right care and the quality of the tint. “One new development is the use of plant-based tints like RefectoCil, which are particularly well tolerated and suitable for those with allergies.” RefectoCil products and treatments are available in Ireland from Salon System.

NovaLash introduce The Light for better lash application
Eyelash enhancement brand, NovaLash, has introduced a new lamp to assist lash artists in delivering better quality services. The Light features two elongated LED panels, on adjustable arms 12 inches (30.5 cm) in length, with a total of 192 LED lights, with five lighting levels. The arms can be extended horizontally or vertically, and the light can be operated by remote control. It has a sturdy base, and when arms are fully extended, The Light reaches as tall as 83 inches (211 cm) and as low as 50 inches (127 cm). Having a vivid light means lash artists can see the smallest of lashes, enabling you to achieve full density in your lash sets. During separation, use the brightest setting so you can spot any lashes that are stuck together. As well as being super useful for lash artists, NovaLash’s The Light is also ideal to illuminate clients during make-up application, and for creating the perfectly lit photo. The Lipofirm™ Pro incorporates Trilipo with Dynamic Muscle Activation (DMA) technology for inch loss, body contouring, cellulite improvement, and face and body tightening treatments. Using one applicator, TriLipo Radio Frequency (RF) and DMA work synergistically to deliver non-invasive targeted fat removal, long-term circumferential decrease and lymphatic drainage, as well as skin tightening, lifting and toning. The electro-heating of the skin generated through RF stimulates metabolism in the subcutaneous fat layer and collagen remodelling in the dermal layer. In the subcutaneous fat layer, the thermal effect accelerates the natural fat metabolism process and the release of liquid fat from the fat cells into the extra-cellular matrix. Fat cells are drained from the body through DMA technology, where pulses cause the muscles to contract, pushing fast cells to the surface. Business: Do You Need a Helping Hand?...................................................................................................................................
Marie-Louise Coster is a Session Tech, Beauty Therapist, Trainer and Business Consultant, with over 20 years’ experience in the industry. All About Mi Beauty & Holistic Training School (www.allaboutmi.net) is ABT-accredited.
Do You Need a
Helping Hand?
T
Marie-Louise Coster considers the importance of a Business Mentor.
here seems to be a trendy new buzz word on the block - Business Mentor. It may just be me but everyone seems to be offering their services as a mentor, and in some cases I fear it is going to become like training...every man and his dog are doing it because, as they say, those who can’t, teach, so maybe those who can’t run a business are going to start telling others how to do it There is no doubt that a business mentor is of great value and a real asset to you and your business. If you look at some of the most successful entrepreneurs, the Steve Jobs and Richard Branson’s of the world, they all had Business Mentors, I wonder how successful they would have been without one? But to accept that you need help, for some, does not come easily, with many considering it a sign of failure, when in fact the opposite is true. To ask for, and accept, help shows great strength of character, and if getting help means you achieve your dreams surely that’s a win-win all round? Many therapists long to have their own business, for some it is the ultimate achievement, but in truth they don’t consider all the aspects of owning and running that business. It’s very easy to get all caught up in the bits that are fun - the choosing décor, choosing brands, generally overspending on ‘stuff’ that isn’t essential but that you like the look of, choosing a name (the one thing that people seem to start with!) etc. but those things, whilst essential, are not the crux of the business, your business plan is.
40
What are your targets? How will you grow the business? What are your forecasts? What monetary value do you need to take to cover costs and pay yourself a wage? What is the ultimate goal? What is the one year, three year, five plan? What is your exit plan? You can’t just wing it, although many do! I politely refer to these as busy fools. Starting and running a business is expensive, especially in the world we live in. There are many added pressures and strains upon business owners, whether you employ people or not, and many get so focused on filling their column and making money that day that they lose sight of the bigger picture. Spend money to make money As a business owner you are everything. A large corporation will have a finance team, a marketing team, a HR team, a team to deal solely with social media; they will have designated people in charge of stock control, maintenance etc. As a small business owner, you are all those things and more, often leaving little time to focus on the business until it is too late. Whilst I appreciate it is another expense, you need to spend money to make money, so what can a Business Mentor do for you? In a nutshell a Business Mentor is basically someone who has been where you are. They will have more entrepreneurial skills and experience than you do, and they will use this knowledge to guide you through decision making and help you to grow your business and increase your turnover.
Of course, there will be a charge for this service, everyone has to make a living, so do your research, look at the experience and background of the mentor. You obviously want someone who is in the beauty industry and has had extensive experience across the industry as a whole. Look at any testimonials, speak to others who have used a mentor, ask for recommendations. However, I see many posts on a daily basis of people asking on industry Facebook groups about Business Mentors and streams of people come forward offering their services. They are generally all in the industry, but - as well you know - our industry is full of ‘experts’ who did a short course and have been doing the job for five minutes! This is why you must do extensive research before you commit to anyone. You need to spend your money wisely; you don’t have an endless pot of money and you want the money you do spend to provide you with a return. Be wary of anyone who makes wild claims like they can treble your turnover over night or can fill your appointment book without ever offering a promotion. I’m suspicious of people who make such claims without having looked at your business and finances. Not everyone can afford a Business Mentor, does that mean their business is destined to fail? Absolutely not!
.................................................................................................................................. Business: Do You Need a Helping Hand?
“To ask for, and accept, help shows great strength of character, and if getting help means you achieve your dreams surely that’s a win-win all round?”
If you can’t afford a Business Mentor, there are other ways that you could get support for your business. You could:
• Join a business networking group. You will make lots of useful contacts and learn from others. You may even pick up some new clients! • Utilise Facebook. There are lots of business support groups which will provide you with tips, advice and create a sounding board for you to bounce ideas off other therapists. • Build a relationship with a more experienced industry professional that is happy to help and advise you. • Buy a book! There are lots of books available, and whilst not specific to your individual business, they will still be a valuable resource. • Attend Trade Shows. Such a valuable tool in more ways than one! The seminars at annual trade shows are a great way of hearing first-hand from some very experienced business people and gaining some very useful information, as well as being inspired. • Workshops. Some Business Mentors often do one off workshops which may be more financially viable to you. There will be a group of people there so the price is often lower than a one-to-one service, plus you hear from other salon owners, and therapists, in your position. • Visit your local bank. Whilst not specifically in the beauty industry, your bank will have a designated Business Manager who will be able to help you with financial matters, targets and forecasting. • Be your own Mentor. Sometimes I think we spend so much time in our business that we forget why we started it, the plans we had for it and what drove us to do it in the first place. It’s important to take time out from your business, even if it’s just an hour a week, to look at it from a different angle and look at what is working, what needs work, how the business is growing and are you achieving the original dream? Maybe the original dream changed, but whatever the overall goal, are you on target to achieve what you want and need to? If it’s not, go back to the start - why did you start the business? Look at your original targets, are you achieving them? If you didn’t set financial targets set some now, start with what you need to take just to run the business, add what you want to earn, work out the hours it takes to cover all of this, what hours are left? Where will the profit come from? Take some time to visit other salons to see what they are doing and get ideas for your business. A Business Mentor is a valuable resource and it is great to have that constant support to speak to, run ideas past and give you the focus you need to achieve your goals. Every journey is more fun if you have some company along the way (says the woman who is often travelling at silly o’clock alone!).

Hands up for luxury!
.........................................................................................................................................Nails: Luxury Manicure Treatments
Why it’s time to reimagine your manicure services. oday’s client is more demanding than ever, and when it comes manicure services, they expect long-lasting results in addition to a pampering experience.
Now’s the time to bring your manicure services up-to-date, whether that’s refreshing your product range, enhancing your skills to include better massage techniques, or improving the ambiance of your nail area so that all clients’ expectations are met.
Marie-Louise Coster offers some ideas to bring your manicure up to luxury standard… Exfoliation & Mask: The addition of an exfoliator and mask will increase the overall effectiveness of all other products you use on the skin. Exfoliating prior to the hand and arm massage will remove dead skin making the skin more responsive to the massage cream. Follow the massage with a mask to further nourish and moisturise the skin. Paraffin Wax: This is another perfect addition for those with dry skin or cracked hands. The paraffin itself is particularly moisturising and can come with a variety of added ingredients such as essential oils that could aid relaxation; just be wary of allergies if using paraffin wax with added ingredients.
T
“Our clients’ needs are changing,” says Sinéad Mydat, Director of Bio Sculpture Ireland. “When they come to our salons now they are looking for a calming and relaxing environment to get away from their everyday lives. The hustle and bustle and social gathering at the salon is being replaced by a more peaceful and spiritual need. We work longer and harder than ever before and we need that time to unwind and rest.” She continues: “These changes are based around the salon environment and the therapist. More salons are offering a holistic approach to nails and beauty as clients look to feel more relaxed and refreshed after their treatments.” Owner and Educator at All About Mi Beauty Salon & Training School, Marie-Louise Coster, agrees: “Our lives are getting busier and more hectic, and we are sacrificing time for ourselves, so when we do treat ourselves we want to be made to feel special, pampered and relaxed. Next time your client comes in for her manicure discuss with her what she wants to get out of her treatment – yes she may want lovely painted fingernails but she may also be concerned by her dry hands or perhaps a more specific massage for some relaxation. Whatever her reasons for having a manicure, find this out during the consultation so as you can give her what she considers to be a perfect manicure.” There are several ways you can add a little extraluxury to your manicure, such as Heated Mitts as Marie-Louise explains: “Apply extra cuticle oil to the nail plate and surrounding area, plus hand cream to the hands, place the hands in liners and into the heated mitts. The addition of the mitts will provide the heat to penetrate the products deeper into the skin and nails, this will provide nourishment and vitamins. It is a very simple addition and one that has a great benefit, particularly for clients with Rheumatism and Arthritis.” Turn the page to see some of the professional luxury manicure treatments and products we love…
Hot Stones: For those clients seeking relaxation, hot stones are a particularly effective addition to the manicure routine. They make a beautiful addition to the massage, and the cosy stones can be used in between the fingers whilst painting the nails to add a little more stress relief. Reflexology: If you don’t offer Hot Stone Treatments, perhaps you could incorporate some Reflexology within the massage element of your manicure. Not only will this be relaxing but also rebalancing to the body as a whole. Heated Mitts: These are perfect for clients with Rheumatism, Arthritis or poor circulation, as well as moisturising and nourishing the hands. The heat from the mitts not only relieves aches and pains but penetrates the massage cream deeper into the skin making the product more effective and moisturising.

Retailing: Are You Trying Too Hard?.......................................................................................................................................
Are you trying too hard? Beauty Business Expert, Liz McKeon, on how to avoid being a pushy salesperson. There is a definite distinction in the retail world between the infamous ‘pushy sales person’ and someone who is focused, well informed, generous with their expertise, thoughtful and eloquent. These are all good things. Being pushy isn’t. We call someone pushy when they are trying harder than the client to move the sale forward. We call them pushy when they have more at stake or more to gain than the client. It is easy to think you are being pushy with the client and then minimising the value you are actually adding to the client’s experience. With this in mind, stop worrying about being pushy and focus on the added value your expertise brings to the client. Informing, guiding, educating & recommending Selling is a word that is dreaded and feared – even though we all know we need to “sell” our services and products, many of us feel anxious and fearful about actually doing so. If you alter your mindset and focus your attention on informing, guiding, educating and recommending, you will be in a far better place to secure a sale, than someone who negotiates a transaction with the sole purpose of simply making client X buy something. To shift out of fear and into excitement about selling, I recommend a few simple and effective technique to the therapists and salons and spas that I work with. They include:
58
1.
Knowing the source of your fear is an important part of overcoming your fear of selling. For example, fear can come from worrying about not being liked or being perceived as pushy, struggling with the idea of being rejected or lack of confidence in the product.
2.
Take action to address the source of your fear. For example, improve your product knowledge, you are after all the trained expert. Believe in yourself. Find a way to bounce back after rejection, which becomes a lot easier if you don’t take the ‘no’ personally.
3.
Find enthusiasm for what you offer. Make a list of all the wonderful benefits and successful outcomes of past clients. I am sure you have changed the way people perceive themselves and improved the health of clients’ skin many times.
4.
Shift your perspective. Think of yourself as “sharing information” or “showing benefits” rather than trying to convince somebody to buy. Education, education, education is a great mantra here.
5.
Start small when you want to overcome your fear of selling. The most successful salespeople are those who interact with clients in an authentic, passionate way, so find a way that feels comfortable for you. Engage with your client, get to know him or her. From a position of trust, your recommendations and advice will be accepted.
.......................................................................................................................................Retailing: Are You Trying Too Hard?
6.
Keep track of your successes. Sometimes we forget just how much we do right. By keeping note of this daily your confidence will begin to improve. And this doesn’t just refer to how many sales you make each day. Think of all of the positive things.
7.
Have fun with it. Rather than approaching selling from a “have to” perspective, find a fun and interesting way to share your knowledge and passion. Relate it to beauty stories you have read online or trends you have seen on Instagram (adjust it to suit your clients age and background).
8.
Stay focused on your desired outcome. Most people take actions and reach their goals because they stay focused on the benefits of doing so. Sometimes, reminding yourself what you want and why you’re doing this can help you to keep going.
9.
Detach from the outcome. Very often we get really attached to “making the sale” or having the situation turn out a certain way. Instead, staying focused on your effort – doing a great job – means that the outcome turns out better than you might ever have imagined.
10.
Keep practicing. Like any other skill, “selling” gets easier the more you do it. Generosity requires that we be aware of how the other person, the client,is feeling about the forward motion we’re trying to make. Pushiness is in the eye of the beholder. Generosity requires that we be aware of how the other person, the client, is feeling about the forward motion we’re trying to make.

Business: Cosmetics Calling!...................................................................................................................................................
S C I T SME
CO CALLING! Marie Meskheli reveals her top tips on how to create your own make-up brand. Creating your own make-up brand is a very exciting, challenging and rewarding experience. In this article, I will try to introduce the most important aspects of the whole process.
The next stage is to organise the technical side of your activity:
Readiness – Be Prepared!
Choosing a name for your brand: Ideally your brand’s name will be easy to remember, easy to pronounce, connected with your activity and free from trademark registration.
This is one of the most important factors when creating your own makeup brand. It is essential that you are fully prepared and have set of clear objectives. You will need to dedicate a lot of your free time, undertake research and even attend training courses to achieve your goals. You also need to be able to answer the following questions: For whom are you creating the brand? Who is your target customer?
•
What is your key selling point? Have you identified a gap in the market? What will you be offering that is ‘new’ and different’ when you introduce your brand? Once you have defined these points, what will be the brands main concept e.g. ‘Professional make-up’,‘mineral make-up’, ‘vegan cosmetics’, ‘handmade cosmetics’ or something else.
• Which market are you creating your product’s portfolio for?
• What will be your distribution channel? Where will you sell your products (physical shops, online shops etc.)? What will be the price range for your products? Who are your competitors? This is increasing year by year, the market is full of cosmetic and make-up products, ranging from budget to premium and niche brands. Creating your own make-up brand requires huge resources, you need to have the correct finance in place and to start building a dedicated team to grow the business. It is extremely challenging, especially when you first start trading and are competing against established international brands that have been operating around the globe for decades.
Create a detailed business plan for your brand: This is a vital step for your business venture and covers all topics from marketing to financial projections. This will be crucial, especially if you need financing and you need to find an investor or sponsor for your brand. Try to define all the points in your business plan clearly, keep it concise and know your audience. Identify reputable suppliers: You will also need to identify reputable suppliers for your products’ assortment that can offer high quality formulations, competitive prices, Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) and reliable delivery times. On average, product development takes between six months to a year. Once you have this data, you can provide a more detailed financial breakdown and analysis in your business plan. You will also need to produce a design and marketing plan, where you detail the step by step activity from product development to sales. Always remember; try to avoid any extra fixed expenses in your activity, especially at the beginning and utilise your strengths. It can take up to one to two years to bring the first products to market. Each step, from the initial brand concept to bringing your product to market, will be full of different challenges, whether it is financial, design or technical issues. You will need to answer the following questions; ‘what to create?’, ‘where to produce?’, ‘how to produce?’, ‘how to sell?’, ‘where to sell?’ to realise your dream. If you find your customer sales increase, you may need more funds to increase production, if your sales are slow you still have to cover your business’ fixed expenses each month, so it is important you have strong financial resources to maintain your business. Business: Salon Interiors.........................................................................................................................................................
It’s what’s on the inside that counts Irish Beauty discovers how the experts style their salon interiors. The appearance of your salon, spa or therapy room says so much about you and your business. It’s more than just a room filled with functional furniture, equipment and products, it reflects the ethos of what you’re trying to achieve as a beauty or hair business. Irish Beauty spoke to industry experts about how you can create the perfect environment that your clients will love to visit, your staff will enjoy working in, and ultimately, help to build a successful business.
Elissa Newton-Smalls

“When creating the décor for The Nail Lady salon, the size of the salon had to be taken into consideration. The space needed to be maximised, therefore the layout of equipment and furniture is important to ensure ease at every service whilst maintaining the professional image.
“Never underestimate the impact that a neat and attractive salon interior has for boosting and securing business. True, your staff may be highly skilled, but if your salon looks shabby and outdated, there’s a high chance your customers will wave goodbye at the end of their appointment and not return. If you really want to capture the attention and trust of potential clients, it’s a simple fact that your salon’s décor needs to be a reflection of your brand identity.
The Nail Lady Salon and CND Education Ambassador
“As for the hues, neutral tones seem to work best and accessorising with fixtures such as the fabulous CND™ Wall Racks from Sweet Squared gives a clean finish. Creams and greys work well with crisp white doors and ceilings. Marble and rose gold are very current right now and these accessories used at present can be changed in time when needs be. “Small accessories can be added throughout the salon, it’s these added extras clients notice. For example, The Nail Lady salon has a few pieces throughout that complement the salon logo. “A pedicure station is a great extra and mine blends well with the salon interior as the floor was also layered onto the new station platform, making it all consistent with the theme. Clients love the height during pedicures and it makes it easier for the professional which provides a more relaxed service. “It is important to not over crowd the space, however big or small a salon is. Ideas from Pinterest can really help with this. Try creating a board and have a look at the different ideas from pins. It’s exciting to see these inspire you and come together in your own salon.”

“For instance, if your USP is that you offer vibrant and fun manicures or offbeat facials, an all-white and sleek minimalist look would seem too bare. Equally, if your salon is all about classic beauty, zebra prints and fluorescent lighting would be jarring and inconsistent. “One great and budget-friendly way to make sure your décor stays true to your brand, is by painting the inside of your salon a clean, neutral colour. This can then be enhanced with a bold statement wall, a vibrant and eyecatching retail area or decorations like mirrors, shelves or pictures which showcase your personality. The added benefit of having a simple base décor is that when it’s time to remodel, all you need to do is add a fresh lick of paint and then focus your attention on updating your style with new accessories!”

“There’s a designer in all of us – there’s no rules - so go for it!”
Ruth Atkins
Salon System Educator “Your salon’s décor is a reflection of you and the services you offer, this can be predictable but also totally unique, the choice is yours. “You can really inject some personality into your workspace, be as quirky and funky as you like, and add fun items and furniture. Keep to a loose theme so that the space flows well. If following a fashion with décor, remember that these looks will age so be prepared to update regularly. This can be done simply and cheaply by changing accessories and colour schemes. You can also alternate accessories with the changing of the seasons, adding more of a hyyge or cwtchy feel in winter and more bright and airy things in summer. “When creating your salon décor don’t just rely on specialised furniture suppliers and companies. Although made for the industry, some can be picked up much cheaper with great alternatives from places like Ikea for retail units, trolleys and reception area furniture, cushions etc. Also, don’t forget the little details either luxury soaps in your bathroom, coordinated towels, posh biscuits with tea. Remember that your client has taken the time and money to be in your salon so make the experience special and different from the norm and one she wants to return to. “Sites like Pinterest are great for getting ideas and inspiration for décor, and don’t be scared to up-cycle it’s very cool to do so at the moment and great for the environment. “If décor is not your forte, speak with an interior designer who understands you and your services. It will be money well spent to ensure a stylish and visually pleasing space and continuing to express your brand message whatever that may be. “I think that there’s a designer in all of us – there’s no rules - so go for it and be happy restyling your salon space.”

...................................................................................................................................................... Beauty Talk: Aisling Kelly
Yazmine Lomax, marketing and communications executive at Flair Hair & Beauty Supplies, talks with the best in the beauty business
BeautyTalk Aisling Kelly is a Galway-based make-up artist who has spent more than 14 years working backstage at fashion and award shows, beautifying brides around Ireland, and teaching her craft to others. It’s great to catch up with you, Aisling! It’s also been fantastic to watch your career as a bridal make-up artist. Can you tell us what it’s like to work on weddings? Working on weddings is a real privilege; you’re invited into someone’s home and time with their family for some of their most intimate moments. As a make-up artist, you’re a very important person on the day as the bride is putting her trust in you to make her feel like her best self. Some people may think weddings are stressful but I really don’t feel that at all. I‘ve been doing this for a long time and have seen it all so I’m quite relaxed in some stressful moments
How is working on television and fashion shows different to this? There is a lot more product involved in TV, and you have to exaggerate things slightly as the camera takes most of the make-up away. Shows are a completely different ball game; it’s the most exciting, scary and stressful time. I thrive on this type of work as I’m one of those who work very well under pressure.
As a freelance make-up artist, you’re now your own boss. What are the most rewarding and challenging parts of this role?
You’ve done so much in your years as a make-up artist. What is your proudest achievement?
I come from a family of entrepreneurs so it’s in my Doing make-up backstage at the Alexander blood. It was inevitable that I would go out on my McQueen show and at the BAFTAs and British own, it just took me a little longer than I thought it Fashion Awards are all pinch me moments! would but it was the right time! The most rewarding part is seeing my clients and students building confidence. One challenge is hoping that the work will keep coming in. I’m fortunate in that it has always been steady for me but you have to go out and get the work, you can’t sit back and hope it will come to you. You also have to move with the times and I believe it’s so important to upskill and learn new things.
You also teach make-up classes and courses regularly. What drew you to teaching? Throughout my career, I realised I had so much knowledge that others didn’t have and I was always so so happy to share it. I would find myself talking a lot when I was with clients so it was a natural progression to teach!
And finally, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Enjoy every experience and remember you can’t please all of the people all of the time. Working with the public has its challenges; it can be quite tough but the best way to overcome this is experience.
