It was a delight to meet so many IB readers at March’s Irish Beauty Show, and hear your inspiring business stories, guide you towards your favourite exhibitors, and take a peek in your shopping bags of course! Since then, spring has finally arrived with flowers coming into bloom, trees showering us with a confetti of blossom, and brighter skies. And we have a new regular column from Flair’s Yazmine Lomax, who this month meets awardwinning nail tech, Amie Pike. Enjoy! Best wishes

Amie, owner of AP Fashion Nails & Beauty in Dublin, was presented with the award at one of the biggest nights in the Irish beauty calendar. Amie, who won the Irish National Tech 2016 at the Irish Beauty Show, told Irish Beauty: “I’m delighted to have won Image magazine Business of Beauty Nail Tech of the Year! This is probably the best award any nail tech could win in Ireland! I was shocked to be even nominated for this award, as it’s not the public’s choice; the magazine and a panel of judges pick only the best in Ireland to be nominated. “It was an honour to be up next to some amazing well known nail techs. Most of these super talented girls are up every year for this award and have won! Then for me, Little Miss Nobody, first time up, to actually go and win!!! Honestly I think I’m still on cloud nine! I can’t believe I won! “I have all my clients to thank who took the time to vote for me; it’s so heart-warming to have everyone’s support, it really is! I didn’t think anything else could top my career but this has blown it all away!” Amie won the award ahead of Rebecca McParland of Tropical Popical and Sarah Gaynor of Sarah Gaynor Nails, both also in Dublin.

Retailing: SPF Skincare..........................................................................................................................................................
A
Retailing SPF products in your salon
lthough we should all be wearing a high level of SPF throughout the year, as the warmer weather arrives it’s vital that skin is given extra protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Whilst picking up a bottle of product from the supermarket might be an easy option for a family holiday, for clients seriously invested in preventing premature ageing, including pigmentation, lines and wrinkles, you should be offering them superior products which deliver skin caring results as well as protection against cancerous rays. What’s more, they provide an ideal added revenue stream for your business throughout the year. “Sunscreens are classified into two categories, physical and chemical,” explains Emma Dunne, Lead Educator for Eve Taylor Ireland. “Physical sunscreens are either Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide and sit on the surface of the skin and provide a physical shield that reflects the UV rays away from the skin. They are broad spectrum sunscreens meaning they protect from both UVA rays and UVB rays.
“All other sunscreens are classed as chemical. Avobenzone and Oxybenzone to name a few.” Emma continues: “Remember educating our clients on their skin’s health is key. Encouraging [them] to use an SPF daily should be one of the top pieces of homecare advice we give.” “Clients should be on the lookout for protection not only against UVA and UVB but now also HEV, the blue light emitted from our computer and mobile phone screens,” adds Stephanie Verstraten, Advisor in Aesthetic Dermatology at mesoestetic UK. “Beauty salons should be looking at SPFs that suit different skin types, whether they are oily (requiring a more matte, non-comedogenic SPF) or looking for a more anti-ageing and moisturising [product].” Here are some options for you to consider stocking…
Tahe Protective Bronzing Cream SPF 15 protects skin from UVA and UVB rays, preventing ageing and dehydration. Reinforced chemical filters absorb and reflect harmful rays, combatting the effect of free radicals. Water resistant, vitamins and reparative agents calm, tone, smooth and hydrate skin. Key ingredients include Octinoxate, Octocrylene and Octyl Triazone sunscreens along with nourishing Shea Butter and Soya, and hydrating Xylitol. DK Distribution: 053 914 3032 / www.evetaylor.ie

Treatments: Superficial Peels..................................................................................................................................................
Introducing superficial peels into your facial routines If you’d like your clients to get a little bit more out of their facial treatments, introducing a superficial peel will really boost results, especially on skins with concerns such as ageing, pigmentation and acne. Irish Beauty spoke to Stephanie Verstraten, advisor in Aesthetic Dermatology for mesoestetic UK, on what types of peels are suitable for salon use, and how to choose the right ones… “Superficial peels are a great way to move your clients from beauty treatments to the aesthetic sector and to give a more results-driven treatment,” says Stephanie. “Chemical skin peels give an anti-ageing effect by controlled wounding of the skin, which creates a cellular reproduction, e.g Collagen, Elastin and Hyaluronic acid, while also being exfoliating and able to treat adverse skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation and rosacea. Stephanie adds: “Salons should look for peels that can be suited for most and if possible all Fitzpatrick skin/photo types so they have a range and option for everyone. We would also recommend looking at combined peels which have several different acids in. “[Ahead of treatment[, always make sure to give a through consultation, check allergies and get your clients to prepare their skin with a gentle acid product at home.” Stephanie suggests that key ingredients you should look out for include: • Glycolic acid: This is a great anti-ageing acid, which has a small molecular size offering great transdermal penetration. • Lactic acid: Great to hydrate and brighten the skin, and also very good for dry and sensitive skins. • Salicylic acid: An anti-bacterial and anti- inflammatory, this acid helps to de-congest the skin so is great for oily and spot prone skin types. • Mandelic acid: This can treat non-active rosacea and help to treat superficial pigmentation.
Here’s a few products you could consider… Repêchage’s Biolight® Luminex Mask is a hybrid professional peel treatment which combines deep cleansing Kaolin clay, exfoliating Glycolic Acid (AHA) and fruit acids, along with moisturising Laminaria Digitata Seaweed extracts and a blend of natural brightening ingredients. This pearlescent soufflé crème peel mask can be used alone, or added on to other services to gently help reduce the appearance uneven skin tone, fine lines, and wrinkles, and leave skin bright and glowing. Everlinespa Bright Refine Pro is a new generation of cosmetic peeling. This multi-level cosmetic peel programme has been developed to exfoliate, illuminate and perfect the skin in a single dose. Shades of the season
T
Marie-Louise Coster looks at key nail trends from the catwalks that we’ll be seeing in salons
he summer is most definitely my favourite season and what makes me love it even more are the colours associated with it, and even more so, the colours we will be wearing on our nails. Of course, spring has seen an influx of pastel shades, beautiful pale pinks, peach, nude, pale blue, mint green, lemon etc. and I believe those shade will carry through the summer as well and be a continuing feature. The summer will now follow on from that and we will see, in addition to these shades, a stream of brighter versions of these tones - fuchsia pinks, bold blues, coral shades and still nude...because everyone loves a nude! Trends themselves come from lots of different sources; from brand manufacturers themselves, products and styles of application that are popular within our industry at the time, and from the fashion industry. In my opinion, the fashion industry is the most influential when it comes to setting trends. What we see on the catwalk is recreated, and sometimes diluted, within high street shops - that goes for the clothes, hair, make-up and nails. I am lucky enough to work at Fashion Weeks in London and Paris, as well as on editorial photoshoots and advertising campaigns. To get an idea of what will be popular from a nail point of view, we need to look back at what was seen on the catwalk last September at the various Fashion Weeks around the world. Now there will be lots of designs and styles from the simpler to the more outlandish, but we have to consider what will translate well on the high street and what is wearable for our everyday client.
Marie-Louise created two-tone nails as Lead Manicurist for Yuhan Wang.
Nudes So, let’s start with nudes, always popular and wearable by anyone providing you get the right shade. Nudes can be transparent to opaque, and we saw a full spectrum of this at London Fashion Week with the likes of Eudon Choi, David Koma and Jasper Conran all opting for nude nails, echoed further at Paris Fashion Week by the likes of Hermès.
A full spectrum of Nude nails were seen at London and Paris Fashion Weeks.
When you use a nude shade there is simply no hiding any imperfections! So, the key things with nudes, particularly more translucent ones, are that the nail is perfectly clean underneath the free edge. I read a really interesting post on Facebook where a nail tech asked if people cleaned under the free edge because she had had a client in that had really dirty nails and because she wouldn’t clean them the client tried cleaning them herself on the nail techs towels, she was appalled. She wasn’t the only one, I was appalled reading it that she didn’t clean under the client’s free edge! Why would you not complete a service and ensure that the nails are beautifully manicured, clean, well hydrated and the hands nourished? This is even more paramount when creating a nude nail.

“Coral is a beautiful, easily
wearable colour for anyone and goes with anything and is always my go-to shade in the summer months.” Coral Pantone’s colour of the year is Living Coral and you can expect to see a lot of that this summer. Coral is a beautiful, easily wearable colour for anyone and goes with anything and is always my go-to shade in the summer months. Coral was featured on the catwalks for SS19 by Gucci and Temperley, and I am sure it will feature heavily within salons up and down the country. The beautiful thing about coral is it can easily be used as a key colour when creating nail art, either as a base for other colours or as the detail upon a nude shade. Coral works well with so many colours it really does give you huge scope when creating nail art. Brights Finally, on the catwalks, there were some bolder colours featured - bright red and bright blue - within the mix of everything else, so collectively all these shades will create a great palette for the client to choose from and for you to create masterpieces with. Nail art Nail art has really gained momentum in the last few years and I think that it is only going to pick up speed as the season is underway. There was a lot of two-tone nails on the catwalk for SS19; personally, I created some two-tone nails when I was Lead Manicurist for Yuhan Wang, a simple, opaque nude with a large red dot at the tip. A style that would be very easily recreated in the salon and could be created with different colours or by placing the dot in a different place on the nail. Alternative French Manicure application is also popular and can very easily be achieved. You can use any colour combination and really give it a twist, or you could switch your French Manicure up and place the darker colour in the half moon area of the nail. Equally you could do two (or even three or four) tone colour blocking on the nail and could even use foils to create a multi-tonal nail. There really are a lot of options.

In addition to this, a design that I think never dates when it comes to summer, is flowers. One stroke, aquarelle, freehand… whatever is your preferred medium you can create some beautiful flowers as art that are unique to the client and the colour tailored to her. My key piece of advice is do not panic when it comes to nail art, practice and work creating designs that you are confident with. Pre-paint some colour pops with designs that you are confident doing and have them on your nail desk for clients to choose from, change them up each season and develop your skills as you work.

Potent actives are absorbed through the membranes of the cheek walls as the bear-shaped gums are sucked. Suitable for vegans, the product is formulated using essential plant nutrients of beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin, which nourish the skin, restoring its optimum glow. ESFA approved ingredients protect skin against oxidative stress, helping to form collagen and maintain normal skin pigmentation. Reach your goals Liz McKeon discusses the importance of individual sales targets
I
t’s important when learning how to manage a salon business to give your sales team personalised attention and individual targets to ensure they know what is expected of them and they perform at their peak! Achieving sales volume goals is one of the biggest challenges that any beauty salon owner or manager faces. Many factors, under or beyond your control can affect that final sales figure. One manageable factor is the people in direct contact with your clients on a daily basis – your staff who are also your sales team. This is why good salon customer service is an important tool for how to increase sales in beauty retail. Each person working in your salon is crucial to growing the business It is wise to set an overall company goal, so you all know what you want to achieve collectively. Look at the big picture as it relates to that goal and itemise the plan and what needs to happen to reach the salon sales goal. It is critical to the plan to let each person know and understand where they fit into your plans. Now, some beauty salon owners ask every person on the team to meet the same sales goals, but not everyone is capable of achieving at the same level. Some beauty therapists are better with certain services, others have a natural ability when it comes to retail, others work best with a certain type of client. Since you can’t ignore these variables, you should learn to master the art of flexibility. Clever salon managers work with each person on their team to discuss what is expected of them to keep their column profitable. Ideally, each employee should be evaluated based on their individual skills, experience, knowledge and training. One 10 minute individual meeting per person a week is what I advise.
The importance of individual sales goals Begin the weekly meeting by thanking the individual for their effort and service to the salon. Review how they did with their sales last week (for both services and retail). Then ask what they might improve on next week. Hopefully, you will be pleasantly surprised by some of the creative answers that emerge. Use all of the information discussed to move forward with new goals for the coming week, which will be reviewed next week. Let the team member be in control of their goals by asking what their income goal for the next week will be. Then break that figure down into reasonable daily goals. Again, have them commit to their belief in that goal being achievable. Motivating your staff is instrumental to increase sales in beauty retail. Before finalising the meeting, talk about promotions, events or special offers that you are running, so they can work them into their weekly sales plans. It is your role to help and to motivate, so always end by asking what you could provide along the lines of product knowledge, selling skills training to help them to continue to grow and achieve their weekly sales targets. This type of personal involvement in setting and implementing achievable goals for your team members will work in your favour. You will get to understand what each person believes they can do. In turn, they will know what you hope they will achieve. The real win-win is when each person knows that you care enough to help them set individual personalised goals, they will then do their best to meet your expectations. It can also help to strengthen the core beauty business goals for the salon.
Inviting your therapists to have personal involvement in setting and implementing achievable goals will work in your favour.

Self Care for Therapists: What’s your work/life balance?
S
elf Care as a beauty therapist was so important for me. I would be completely burnt out after seeing clients back to back all day. I wouldn’t have breaks and worked extremely long hours. I ate unhealthy foods and would run to the shop between clients and snack on crisps, chocolate, energy drinks, fizzy drinks, sweets, pork pies and pasties. I had so many bad habits. I was good for everyone else but myself. I suffered with an uncomfortable bloated tummy for over four years. This was down to the stress I lived with in my life. What’s your work/life balance? Work/life balance is a lie! It is impossible to balance everything. How many times do you think about work when it is your personal time. Do you ever have time to just be, rather than all the doings that go on? Try this de-stressing exercise. Breathe in deeply while counting to six. Hold the breath by counting to six; this helps to calm anxiety from a busy day. Breathe out slowly...make a noise with your breath if you have tension or stress to release. Repeat three times. How do you feel? Integrating your work We benefit more from having work integration. Imagine your right hand is your job and your left hand is your personal life. Which one is pulling you more? Close your eyes now and ask yourself. Now take a look... Which areas in your life are not running 100% smoothly? Business/ Work. Relationships. Health. Well being – emotional and mental. Finances. Usually if one of these areas isn’t going well this will be affecting another area. What are your personal goals? This is a chance for you to have awareness right now to what is really happening in this work/life balance you’re striving to have. Physically, mentally and emotionally stop! What can you do every single day to help you to achieve your personal goal? What are the commitments you have now? Write them all down, including your work commitments. Take a look at which ones you want and which ones you don’t. Make a commitment now to take tiny action steps towards your heart goals. You will see a ripple effect happen within the other areas in your life. What action step can you make after you have written your list?
60
Are you nurturing or bullying yourself? What tone is your inner voice? Nurturing to yourself or an inner bully? Do you keep thinking of the past? Bring your focus back to your present moment. It’s really important that you pay attention to what you think. If you catch yourself thinking the words “I don’t know” this can be damaging to your success. Detoxify your thoughts immediately, and break the pattern of this limited way of thinking. Then trade this thought with “I wonder”. You will achieve much more flow and possibilities within your life. An example of this is: “I don’t know how I can find clients” vs say out loud “I wonder how I can find clients” “I don’t know how to overcome self-doubt” vs “I wonder how I might believe in myself”
How do the two different ways feel to you? Nurture yourself from within If you snack on sugary foods while at work you will feel very tired in the afternoon and drained by the evening. Within your industry you need all the energy you can get. If you skip breakfast you will have sugar cravings. If you snack on protein foods like nuts, avocado, coconut milk, green leafy vegetables and much more your sugar cravings will stop. Look after your health, and eat foods that will sustain your energy throughout the day. Try my favourite Chia coconut breakfast; it takes just three minutes. Pour a can of Coconut Milk into a Mason or Kilner Jar. Stir with a whisk for a few seconds and add a tablespoon of Chia Seeds. Leave overnight to thicken in the fridge (lasts for up to five days). This can be eaten with fruit or on its own and is delicious, healthy and energising. Later in the day try my favourite health lunch which takes just ten minutes, and consists of chopped Avocado, Orange, Spinach with salt, chilli flakes and a squeeze of lime. Toss all together for a healthy and energising lunch.

Beauty Talk: Amie Pike...........................................................................................................................................................
Yazmine Lomax, marketing and communications executive at Flair Hair & Beauty Supplies, talks with the best in the beauty business
BeautyTalk Amie Pike is a multi-award-winning nail technician whose passion, determination and talent has seen her take the Irish industry by storm! Image courtesy of Kieran Harnett, IMAGE and the IMAGE Business of Beauty Awards.
Hi Amie, it’s lovely to chat with you! Can you tell us where your interest in nails began?
That’s amazing! What has been the hardest part of the whole process?
I did a full beauty course about 12 years ago. When we were given our work experience, I chose a nail bar and I actually got a job out of my work experience because I had that much passion for it!
I would say keeping all your clients happy and making sure everyone can be pleased. Keeping everyone happy and keeping up with trends are the hardest parts, I think.
It’s fantastic that you absolutely fell in love with it! How did you get your own salon up and running? When I had my second baby, I never went back to the salon I was working in. I started working from home and doing clients every day. I got busy so I got a little room somewhere and then got busier and busier. I hired my first staff and then we got too busy for that little room, so we ended up going into the back of a sunbed shop. I hired another staff member and got busier and busier again and within six months I decided to leave the sunbed shop and open my own salon down the road. I had five staff at my last salon and again we outgrew the building, so I had to look for a bigger premise. I’m in my fourth salon (Apfashion Nails & Beauty) at the moment and each one has got bigger!
Speaking of trends, what ones are you loving at the moment? At the moment the main sets of nails we do on a daily basis is ombre. It’s not going anywhere at the moment. They love ombre! We’re quite good at it and I think ours would stand out from a lot of other peoples’ and keep attracting clients in.
What are some highlights of you career so far? You’ve had so many it might be hard to narrow it down! So far definitely the IMAGE Award (for Best Nail Technician 2019) and winning Irish National Nail Tech of the Year in 2016 at the Irish Beauty Show. When I won in 2016, I travelled around the UK for the year doing judging. That was unbelievable. I’m off to Philadelphia in September to become an NSI Master Educator at an educator boot camp. I’m dying to see what it’s like. I’ll also be teaching IBX for Flair and I’m excited to do that!
Have you found that social media has also helped you grow that client base?
That’s amazing! There really are so many opportunities in the industry. Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I think for the generation and age group coming up at the moment, it’s all about social media so if you’re not on social media you’re not in the know. I concentrate on making sure I have regular posts going up every day so we’re constantly popping up on peoples’ newsfeeds. I even have a little chat on my Instagram Stories sometimes! I find I actually get more interest when I chat on my Stories than I would a picture.
Practice, practice, practice and don’t give up! Put your time and money into your training and do it with proper educators and proper brands rather than scrimping and scraping on cheap products and cheap courses. I’ve done it before myself and it works out ‘buy cheap, buy twice’. Put the money and the time into education at the beginning and it will work out for you in the end.
