The year has seen the world of beauty continue to evolve. Cosmetics and nails have gone from spring pastels through to bright neons of summer and now to rich, deep hues and glitters. Skincare has seen myriad of launches as science continues to marry with nature, and in particular this year has experienced a huge growth in the number of vegan products launched in our sector to meet the increase in demand from clients. We’ve also seen developments in industry, as our leaders continue to push for higher standards in our sector and improvements to education levels. Just last month saw the launch of HABIC – the Hair and Beauty Industry Confederation Ireland – which aims to represent and promote the hair and beauty sector at a national level, plus we’ve seen the introduction of a new European Standard for Beauty Salon Services.

The future of our industry looks incredibly bright, and with hard work, commitment and creativity, 2020 is set to be a very positive year. Looking forward, our thoughts are turning to the Irish Beauty Show 2020, which returns to the RDS in Dublin on Sunday 8th and Monday 9th March. As Ireland’s biggest beauty trade event, the show is growing even more with a showcase of spring / summer ’20 product launches along with demos and educational seminars featuring some of your favourite beauty industry professionals. From skincare to waxing, make-up to nails and discussions on up-coming trends, the show will re-ignite your passion for the beauty industry and give you the tools to help you grow your skills and business. HABIC’s Linda Ennis addresses attendees at HABIC’s launch

Hair and Beauty Industry Confederation Ireland launches

Irish Beauty publisher, Brett Fairholm, was delighted to attend the recent launch of HABIC, the Hair and Beauty Industry Confederation Ireland, a not-for-profit organisation committed to representing, supporting, promoting and uniting the sector. The Hair and Beauty industry Ireland is estimated to be worth €2 billion to the economy, and one of the country’s fastest growing sectors. However, it faces a skills shortage, and a parallel black market said to be posing a serious threat to the even the most high-profile hair and beauty businesses.

HABIC will be driven by industry experts and skilled practitioners, determined to highlight the contribution the sector is making to the economy, while striving to address the problems posed by lack of recognition and support at official level. The launch took place at The Crypt, Christ Church Cathedral, in front of 140 industry professionals, experts, and supporters of hair and beauty in Ireland.

Monat hair & skincare expands into Ireland Anti-ageing beauty and hair brand, Monat®, has announced its expansion into Ireland. Launched in the USA in 2014 and the UK in 2018, the range of vegan and cruelty-free products will also launch into Poland this autumn. Stuart MacMillan, President of Monat Global, says: “Monat has seen explosive growth in the United States since 2014, continued that success with our UK launch last year, and now we are ready to bring our products and business opportunity to entirely new audiences in Ireland and Poland.” Ray Urdaneta, CEO of Monat Global, adds: ® “Bringing Monat to more European customers and Market Partners is an exciting milestone for the company. We look forward to welcoming additional markets and customers to the Monat® family in the coming months.”

Q-Fractional skin rejuvenation facials introduced

The Wicklow Street Clinic has launched Q-Fractional skin rejuvenation treatments, a three-step treatment which tightens skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and resolves issues such as rosacea and sun damage. Q-Fractional Technology bypasses the epidermis to create micro areas of damage on the upper part of the dermis. As a result, collagen production is stimulated to heal the damaged skin leading to skin imperfections being replaced with new and healthy skin. After treatment, skin is tightened, toned, smoothed and a more even complexion is revealed. As well as acting as an anti-ageing treatment, Q-Fractional Rejuvenation treats Couperose and red patches on the face or neck, hyperpigmentation, and reduces acne marks and scarring. The Wicklow Street Clinic, located in Dublin 2, has now introduced the treatment, offering clients an alternative to invasive procedures or IPL treatments.

Natural appearance is consumers’ top skin goal

Achieving a natural appearance is more important to skincare users than smooth texture or youthfulness, according to new research. Conducted by Lycored, the research, conducted across five countries, discovered that 77% of consumers considered “natural appearance” their most important skincare goal, ahead of smooth texture (76%), youthful appearance (64%), even complexion (61%) and reduced redness (37%). Zev Ziegler, Head of Global Brand and Marketing (Health) at Lycored, comments: “This research provides valuable insight into what consumers ultimately want when they buy a product for their skin. It also has implications for manufacturers sourcing ingredients, because a consumer who is focused on achieving a natural appearance is also likely to expect products to contain natural ingredients.” The findings form Lycored’s report, The Inner Light, investigating what the concept of ‘glow’ means to consumers. The survey discovered that a healthy glow was important to 72% of consumers, and that they understood the concept in holistic terms, that is as a quality with emotional and mental elements as well as physical ones. One in five (22%) respondents said a healthy glow was most likely to come from within, with 15% stating that it is most likely to come from external factors, such as applying a skincare product. However, the majority (64%) said a glow is most likely to come from a combination of both “within” and “external” factors.

New Standard for Beauty Salon Services launches

The National Standards Authority of Ireland has just published the first European Standard for Beauty Salon Services. I.S EN 17726 sets out the requirements and recommendations for the provision of service in beauty salons and has been broadly welcomed by professionals working in the sector in Ireland. This standard was developed by CEN (the European standard development organization) following an initial submission made by NSAI proposing the development of such a standard. Due to the lack of regulation in Ireland and across Europe for the Beauty Industry, there has never been a more important time to raise standards.

Bluesky head to LFW with designer Paula Knorr

Nail brand Bluesky collaborated with German fashion designer Paula Knorr to create nails for her London Fashion Week Spring 2020 catwalk show recently. The brand’s expert nail technicians designed a collection of nails combining the latest techniques and Bluesky gel polish colours to complement the designer’s SS20 collection, which embraced femininity, respecting the female body and giving the wearer freedom to move. Team Bluesky, who travelled from across the globe, saw their designs showcased at Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge in London.

The publication of this new beauty salon standard offers an opportunity for the beauty salon sector to show they are following good practices in the delivery of beauty treatments. It means beauty therapists can say with confidence that they are providing the best possible service to customers. I.S EN 17226 is applicable to everyone working within the beauty industry. So, if you are a salon owner, therapist, mobile therapist or student you will see major benefits by adopting the standard. The standard can help you grow your business, improve your service, increase your customer base and make sure you stay ahead of the competition. It also helps to build customer confidence that the services that you offer are safe and reliable. Overview of the European Standard (I.S. EN 17226) This standard addresses many areas of beauty salon services including: • Qualification, competence and training of the therapist • Treatment risk assessments • Beauty salon set up • Hygiene practices for therapists • Salon hygiene • Scheduling of appointments • Client consultation • Pre-treatment assessments • Salon management including inspection and maintenance of equipment, stock control, handling of hazardous substances, • Complaints • Review of service and planning for improvements HABIC (Hair and Beauty Industry Confederation), a newly established confederation established to promote best practice within the industry, comments: “HABIC is delighted with the publication of the new standard for beauty salon services and sees this as an opportunity to promote good practices and standards in salon services across Ireland.”

Harley Waxing success spreads to Namibia Already successful in Ireland, Harley Waxing is fast becoming a favourite waxing brand across the globe, with their Namibian distributor, Jessica Webb-Bowen, establishing the brand and planning on opening a training facility.

Jessica first introduced Harley Waxing to Namibia five years ago, where she relocated to after seeing a gap in the market and wanting to gain a qualification. She soon established herself as the first specialised waxing destination in Namibia. She says: “Harley looks after their distributors. When they contacted me and took me onboard, I was so happy! And then, two weeks later, I found out that I was pregnant and my plans changed. But even though I was new to the team, Harley supported me through everything. Since I joined, they have been nothing but supportive of my lifestyle and my salon.” By opening a training facility, Jessica hopes help to bridge a gap in the Namibian beauty industry regarding knowledge of waxing in general, and help other budding waxing technicians understand and appreciate the Harley products and processes.

“Clients struggle with their regime in the winter and they see changes they don’t quite understand” - Hannah McAndrew, Nimue Skin Technology

38

.........................................................................................................................................................Beauty: Winter Skincare

NOWHERE TO HIDE Why it’s vital you review your clients’ skincare regime during autumn and winter

A

s the leaves fall and the weather turns chillier and wetter, it’s not just our wardrobes that need a seasonal makeover; our skin routines, whether that’s in the salon or at home, need to be adjusted to ensure the care we’ve taken over the summer months is not undone by winter environments.

“The good news is that it’s easy to combat TWEL if you choose the right products.”

“As the autumn draws in, our skin loses essential moisture and hydration, resulting in dryness, more pronounced lines and a more lack lustre skin,” explains Ruby Sidhu, Trainer at CACI International.

Breakouts can also be exacerbated by winter weather. “If you suffer with acne prone skin, you may notice your skin becoming more inflamed,” says Dr Sam Hills, Clinical Director at Lynton. “We also all don’t get our Vitamin D, so our complexion can appear dull, slightly grey, not as plump or supple as usual, and you may also have darker under eye circles, this is because the skin needs Vitamin D for the skin cells to regenerate properly and remain healthy.”

Stephanie Verstraten, Aesthetic Advisor in Aesthetic Dermatology for mesoestetic UK, agrees:

So, what changes should we telling our clients to make during the autumn and winter months?

“Skin likes consistency, so when the weather changes this is a shock to our skin system! As autumn and winter comes, temperature and humidity lower and the weather harshens so our skin must work harder to keep in the hydration to avoid cracks, tightness and irritation in the skin. Because of the colder weather we also start to crank up our central heating and have long hot showers, but this also contributes to skin dryness, irritation and inflammation.”

“If the home environment is especially dry, consider investing in a humidifier or simple bowls of water placed near radiators to add moisture to the air; simple tricks like this can be very beneficial for our skin,” suggests Matt Taylor, Lead Educator for Eve Taylor.

“In the summer we are all quite good at taking care of our skin now because we know about SPFs and the importance of protecting the skin. However, I often find that clients struggle with their regime in the winter and they see changes they don’t quite understand,” says Education Ambassador for Nimue Skin Technology, Hannah McAndrew. “This is generally because the skin loses water during the colder months due to a drop in humidity. This process is known as Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL). The loss of water in the lower layers of the skin can cause it to feel dehydrated and slightly flaky. “Usually in the winter, enzyme activity will slow down and the skin can have a duller appearance and feel congested and sensitive. The skin’s natural barrier will be reduced, making conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea more likely.

He adds: “Avoid cleansing with foaming washes high in surfactants and opt for creamy based cleansers which will remove dirt, debris and make-up without stripping away essential moisture and oils.” Wendy Stirling, founder of Botanicals Ltd, agrees: “It’s important to choose natural cream-based cleansing products that don’t strip the skin of its natural oils and emollient moisturisers that soothe the skin and help lock-in moisture. Above all, avoid skin care products that contain synthetic ingredients and petrochemicals, as these can have a drying effect on the skin.” There’s a number of vital ingredient that the skincare you’re recommending to your clients should include, ranging from ceramides and Hyaluronic acid to Shea Butter and Vitamin C. “There are some super-natural ingredients to look out for,” advises Wendy Stirling. “My favourite is organic Shea Butter as it’s one of nature’s miracles for protecting our skin.

39

Beauty: Winter Skincare.........................................................................................................................................................

“It’s wonderfully healing and nourishing to the skin, also incredibly versatile, and for this reason finds its way into most Botanicals products.” “Skin become dryer because ceramide levels naturally drop at this time of year due to changes in the skin’s pH and the effects of central heating,” explains Clare Muir, Training Director iiaa Ltd. “These naturally-occurring lipids moisturise skin, so when they deplete it’s very important to replenish them topically and orally via supplementation.” “Hyaluronic acid should be an essential part of [clients’] daily regimen, as it works effectively to retain moisture, resulting in plumper skin,” says Ruby Sidhu. Matt Taylor agrees, saying: “Applying serums rich in Hyaluronic acid will benefit the skin greatly by infusing moisture into the top layers of skin.” “Hyaluronic acid plays a key role in hydrating parched winter skin. It works in the space between cells, almost like the mortar between bricks, to plump the skin and help it retain moisture; in fact, it can hold 1,000 times its own weight in water. Like ceramides, it can be applied topically or taken orally. For the best outcome, do both!” suggests Clare Muir. In addition, Stephanie Verstraten makes further suggestions: “Glycolic acid [will] exfoliate the dead dull skin cells and reveal fresh skin underneath…It significantly increases hydration of the dermis. [In addition,] vitamin C [is] an antioxidant to fight against free radicals and to help brighten/ add radiance to skin in the duller months. Applied topically, it has a dual antioxidant effect: it neutralises free radicals in cells and contributes to vitamin E regeneration, which is essential for protection of cells’ lipid membranes.”

You also need to consider the professional treatments you’re offering in the salon now that the weather has changed. Carry out a pre-treatment review of your clients’ skin during their facial treatment; assess environmental damage, discuss their current at-home regime, and ask about their lifestyle which may mean their skincare needs are changing. Are they exposed to central heating all day long which will dehydrate skin and lead to dullness, lines and wrinkles? Are they outdoors mornings and evening walking their dogs, when harsh, cold wind and rain can lead to redness and skin sensitivity? By understanding exposure to environmental aggressors, you can prescribe the right products to prevent damage, rather than battling to reverse signs of damage later. “Offer your most nourishing treatments and look to include products rich in Oatmeal, Aloe Vera, Silicones, Hyaluronic acid and lipid rich oils,” suggests Matt Taylor. “Add in elements of gentle heat to give your clients a warming experience, cocoon them in a fluffy cover or duvet, use a heated under blanket and include the use of warm steam towels during the treatment, small touches like these always add a feeling of luxury. “We are in the ideal position to help our clients keep their skin in the best health during the winter months by offering an array of treatments, homecare and advice; using the power of social media we can get our treatment offerings across with targeted adverts, tips and advice or even competitions to win a free treatment. Look to revise your service offerings with a winter portfolio of treatments for the face, body and hands for all round body wellbeing.”

Marie-Louise Coster Writes: A month in the life of a session tech..................................................................................................

Marie-Louise Coster shares the highs – and lows – of working as a Session Tech at this year’s SS20 Fashion Weeks.

Nails at the Molly Goddard show were clean and fresh.

The Molly Goddard show was a new one for me, assisting Saffron Goddard, and it was a show I had long wanted to do. It was a beautiful show within a leisure centre, strangely enough, and Saffron was lovely to work with. The nail look was clean and fresh, which is often more difficult to achieve as you have nowhere to hide anything, which looked beautiful with the collection.

The last few weeks have felt like a complete whirlwind from London to Milan to Paris, working as a Session Tech on runway shows. Planes (delayed and cancelled!), trains and automobiles, it is fair to say I am exhausted but what I wonderful experience! It all began in London, I did a very reduced schedule for me, partly due to my daughter’s birthday falling at the start of it, and partly because I needed to travel to Milan, so I just did four shows this season.

Later Sunday morning, I headed over to near Buckingham Palace to Lead the Manicure team for Osman. This show was quite a contrast to the others I had done so far this season, as it was set in a building on Carlton Terrace with beautiful architectural features, with high ceilings and chandeliers. For this show I had been briefed by the designer beforehand that he wanted a French Manicure (they are going to be big news for Spring/Summer 2020 in various combinations) and wanted them to be all uniform. The only way this was going to be successfully achieved was by making press-on nails. I needed to make 12 sets plus spares in case of any being lost or them not fitting the nails well.

After toing and froing, the designer settled on a high shine, clean natural nail, classic and sophisticated.

52

On the day of the show I arrived equipped with my team, my pre-painted nails, my products, and the stylist (who I had not met before) announced that there were now 16 models, not 12, and she didn’t like French Manicure - it was too 80’s! What she wanted was a dark nail. After a bit of toing and froing and me explaining that there are no shops open in London at 9am on a Sunday, and dark nails just aren’t going to work, she settled on a high shine, clean natural nail. We did the best we could with what we had, and I think the nails work beautifully with the collection – very classic and sophisticated.

Natasha Zinko show saw a variety of nail styles, with colours including bright green, blue, black and lilac, each with water decals.

The next show was a very early one, Sunday morning, 6am, Natasha Zinko. This was another show I hadn’t worked on before but it was with one of my all-time favourite people, Pebbles Aitken. She is such a lovely person and so encouraging, you really get the feeling that she is rooting for you to do well and I have always found her to be very supportive. This show was staged in the street outside the Natasha Zinko shop near Dover Street. Thankfully the weather was good! Natasha’s Collection is always quite vibrant, and this collection was no exception. We had a variety of nail styles - both fingers and toes - with some models sporting bright green, others bright blue, some black and some lilac. Each set, irrelevant of colour, had water decals added to it to create some art.

.................................................................................................Marie-Louise Coster Writes: A month in the life of a session tech

Show three on the Sunday, and the last one for my London season, was Simone Rocha with Ama Quashie. I had never worked with Ama, neither had I done this show, so it was a season of new things in many ways. The show was at Alexandra Palace. The nail look was a very simple, yet stylish, and clean with a pearl placed either at the tip, or base, of the nail. Nails at the Simone Rocha show were simple and clean, with a pearl placed either at the tip, or base, of the nail.

Gilberto required green nails, a reflection of the oil represented in the designer’s fabrics.

The next day I was off to Milan! I have been so very lucky that London and Paris have been regular fixtures in my fashion calendar for many seasons, but Milan was a new one for me, and not only that, I had been asked to be Lead Manicurist for four shows, plus a special green carpet event. Milan is much more about sustainability and the effect the fashion industry on the planet, in London and Paris I don’t get that vibe or sense of urgency. The shows I led were much more inspired by the earth and the people on it. For Gilberto the influence was sand dunes, and, how when you dig deep beneath them you reach oil. The fabrics used had oil-type patterns and effects, and the green nails were a reflection of that oil.

My second show was Tiziano Guardini in the museum at the Duomo. Again, sponsored by Smith and Cult, only this time inspired by the sea, water and what mermaids would wear in this world. The nails were a natural nude colour, that looked really glossy long combined with the beautiful, highly detailed fabrics and clothes. Because Milan is so much more about sustainable fashion, the clothes from the Guardini show were made from recycled plastic and Tencel, wood pulp from trees that are grown on specialised tree farms and produced using recyclable, earth friendly solvents.

“for the designer this is everything, their baby, all of their creativity laid bare for people to criticise or commend.” At Tiziano Guardini, nails were really glossy in a natural nude colour.

Marie-Louise Coster Writes: A month in the life of a session tech..................................................................................................

Paul & Joe’s show featured five different nail looks, including a cat decal with added crystals!

Nails at Stella Jean’s show represented the hardworking women in Pakistan who created the embroidery fabrics. The collection provides a living for these women to support their families.

My show on Saturday was for Stella Jean. This show was truly inspiring because she had collaborated with a small embroidery factory from Chitral in the north of Pakistan that was started by a young women, Karishma Ali, in her early twenties, to provide a living for women so as they in turn could provide their children with education, and things we take for granted in life. Each piece in the collection featured embroidery created by these women. I was fortunate enough to do Karishma’s nails for the show and she really was a marvelous woman, it was clear to see why she was named as one of Forbes 30 under 30. The nails were quite a feature for this show as Stella wanted them to represent the hardworking hands of these women and how their hands touch the earth, so we painted not only the nail but also thetip of the finger, with Smith and Cults Tang Dang.

It was then time for my adventures to come to an end and I had a real mix of emotions…overwhelming gratitude for the amazing opportunities I had been gifted, sadness that the season was over, fear that I may not get asked back, exhaustion due to all of the travel, the work, the lack of sleep etc. and I was feeling very excited and very tearful at the prospect of being reunited with my daughter, my biggest supporter and my constant motivator to strive for more, to be more, to do more and to give her opportunities in life I didn’t have. For those of you reading this that haven’t been put off and still want to get in to Session work my best advice to you is find some Session manicurists on Instagram that you follow and like their work, contact them to see if they ever need any help and ask them if they will keep you in mind. Maybe give them a nudge leading up to show seasons but don’t become a pest! Also, keep your eye out on their Instagram stories, as when their team is short, or they need an assistant, they are likely to put a shout out on there. Be prepared for early mornings, long days and travelling, and be prepared to work for free! Not ideal, and you can’t pay the mortgage with nail polish, but a lot of work is initially unpaid. Use it to your advantage, build a great portfolio and make contacts. I am not suggesting you work for free forever but there will be occasions where it is a great job that could lead to great things but there is no pay. It isn’t acceptable, I grant you, but if you say no someone else will say yes. Be selective, don’t work for anyone for nothing, but consider the job before you decline. Finally, I would just say, whilst a small number do, Session work is not, I don’t believe, ever going to give you the financial reward of a successful business (whether salon based, home based or mobile). I enjoy doing it and I use it to my advantage when it comes to PR and marketing for my business but it is that business that provides the roof over my daughter’s head, the food on our table, the clothes on our backs and her trips to experience amazing things.

On my final day in Milan I was Lead Manicurist for Shuting Qi, and not only that…I was invited to sit front row and watch the show! I always get really emotional watching a show. As a collective team people have spent months, days, hours preparing and creating what the designer wants, and for the designer this is everything, their baby, all of their creativity laid bare for people to criticise or commend. The nail look for this was bright vibrant colours, with each model wearing a shade that contrasted with her outfit and make-up look. It was a beautiful show and a great show to end my first Milan Fashion Week on.

For Shuting Qi, nails were bright and vibrant, with each model wearing a shade that contrasted with her outfit and make up look.

.................................................................................................Marie-Louise Coster Writes: A month in the life of a session tech

It was almost time to go home, just a quick stop to prepare some of Stella Jean’s guests for the Green Carpet Fashion Awards and I was away. I walked back through the door of my home at 4am on Monday morning and at 3am on Wednesday morning I was off to Paris! Paris was always my second favourite city (after Dublin), but I think Milan has taken its place! Nonetheless I was excited to be on my way to assist on the Rocha show, a show I had never worked on before. So after more hours of travelling and a short flight I was there, the Palais du Chaillot, at the Trocadero, the best view of the Eiffel Tower anywhere in Paris. For Rochas the nail look was nude, for both fingers and toes. Nude nails are a classic and they particularly worked with the elegance of this collection. Backstage was reasonably calm, it is interesting how the atmosphere various from city to city; London can be quite fraught, Milan seems to be very laid back…perhaps too laid back at times with a minimal sense of urgency, and Paris sits somewhere between the two. This show was very plain sailing, everything ran to time, we encountered no issues and the show was a success. I left the show with time to spare to get my coach back to the airport as I was flying home that night to work in the salon Thursday and Friday, only to return to Paris on Saturday. A little over 36 hours later I was on my way again, back to Paris for my last stint this season. I have to admit, whether I like it or not, I am a woman of a certain age and all of this travelling, the minimal sleep, the stress when things don’t go to plan and missing my family is a bit too much for me at times, but I am so lucky to do what I do and I always feel sad when a season comes to an end. I was returning to Paris for two shows, Hermes, which I have been lucky to do for four seasons, and Paul & Joe, which I had never worked on before. Hermes was at the Tennis Club de Paris and in true Hermes style it was a clean, classic, timeless, delicate natural nails buffed to a high shine, fingers and toes. Hermes is a big show, there are usually around 55 models, and whilst in Paris you are given a lot more space than in London and there is less scrabbling around on the floor and under tables (in Milan I was even give a chair to sit on!). There are still two to three people working on a model at any one time as you have hair, make-up and nails all needing to do their job at the same time. In moments of panic, when time is against us, there can be double that amount of people! The Hermes Show got a little bit close to the wire and it was very much all hands on deck, but it all went off well and looked beautiful as always.

My final show for the season was Paul & Joe, I had never worked on this show, neither had I worked with the Lead Manicurist before but she was lovely, and the show was really good fun, the clothes really were creations. There were only 30 models, fingers and some toes, depending on whether they were wearing open toed shoes or not, and there was eight of us to complete it and we had four hours to do it (minus rehearsals etc.), so it should have been straightforward right? Wrong! There were three nail looks: look no.1 was a cat decal with added crystals, look no.2 was a black accent nail and the remaining four nails were a clear glossy base and a black dot at the cuticle, and the third look was five pastel shades. For the first hour we didn’t know which model was having which look as the designers hadn’t decided! Rather than waste time we prepped the nails so as when they finally decided we could just get on with it. Once they decided, it was all hands on deck to get the job done, interruptions ensued with shoe rehearsals, walk-in rehearsals, models catching their nails and it having to be reapplied, but the job was completed and it was another success.

In true Hermes style, the show was a clean, classic, timeless, delicate natural nails buffed toa high shine, fingers and toes.

Business: Liz McKeon writes....................................................................................................................................................

Liz McKeon discusses how to manage staff departures, retain clients & find out why they’re leaving.

What to do when your most in-demand therapist leaves

When your superstar therapist walks into your office, closes the door, sits down and asks if you can talk; you get that sinking feeling in your stomach telling you what is coming next…they are leaving.

Exit Interviews: the insider’s guide

Exit interviews… • Provide an opportunity to ‘make peace’ with the disgruntled employee • Are seen as a positive activity by existing staff • Provide relevant and useful data for future training needs • Might even result in giving you a chance to retain your superstar • Hearing and handling feedback is a powerful development process for the salon manager •

Are a unique chance to survey and analyse the opinions of departing employees, who are generally more forthcoming, constructive and objective than staff still in their jobs.

If the departing employee agrees to an ‘exit interview’, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

It’s natural to take their resignation personally, panic and get upset. You may feel angry, disappointed, confused and even betrayed. However, now is not the time for these emotions. You have a business to run and clients to keep. Instead, stay positive, calm and focused on your salon.

................................................................................................................................................... Business: Liz McKeon writes

It is important that you move quickly and take the following five steps:

1

Contact the therapist’s clients immediately

It is preferable that the clients hear the news directly from you and it gives you a chance to book them in with another member of the team. If you cannot contact them by phone, then a letter or email is another good way to get in touch. A text is too short and impersonal. It may send out the wrong message as it might look like you’re not that bothered about their custom.

2

What to say to clients

Stay positive and keep the message simple. Remember the clients are the salon businesses clients. The client doesn’t need to know the details, just that you will continue to look after them at your salon. Acknowledge that you are sad to see the person leave, but you wish them all the very best, and now back to you and your next appointment…

3

Manage the gossip!

No matter where the therapist is going to or what the circumstances of their departure is, do not let your team gossip to clients. Give your team their instructions. If necessary give your team, particularly your reception staff, a script, so they have a well-rehearsed response at the ready. Some clients may feel a little let down, so it is important to manage the situation.

4

Social media

Keep an eye on your social media accounts just in case clients are being poached via this channel. Now is the perfect time to increase your own marketing and shout about just how fantastic your salon is.

5

Pull out all the stops

Do everything you can to keep your clients, but if they follow the therapist, don’t give up – continue to market to those clients and make it easy for them to return to your salon. Remember, you are an amazing entrepreneur and this is just a bump in the road! In no time at all, your salon will be back to normal – everybody is replaceable!
