Despite some lovely sunny days, there’s no doubt that the seasons are changing and autumnal weather is on its way. There’s something I find very appealing about crisper mornings, a slight chill in the air in the evenings, and the need to pop on an extra layer. As much as I love hot summer days, there’s something very comforting about snuggling up in a cosy pullover. And of course, the arrival of a new season means that the world of beauty is changing too. Influenced by autumnal fashions, colour-ways in autumn, or fall, are deeper, more indulgent than frivolous summer brights, so this issue we’re highlighting the brilliance of AW19 palettes in the nail world, and taking inspiration from seasonal catwalks to create the most on-trend nails. A change of season also means a change of skincare routine, and this is something you should be instilling in your clients. Lighter products can be
replaced with more nourishing serums and moisturisers to combat the colder weather, and sun damage caused during the summer should be treated. Microdermabrasion offers a great way of removing dead skin cells and preparing skin for the application of nourishing and hydrating topicals (see page 49), whilst Cosmeceutical skincare ranges (page 39) provide the most intense cocktails of active ingredients to ensure clients achieve the results they desire to repair and prevent further damage as our environment changes. We’ve also our usual round-up ofthe latest industry news, product launches and treatments that you should be introducing to your clients this season, plus we showcase some new educational opportunities to bring your skills up to date. So put your feet up, relax, and enjoy this issue of Irish Beauty…and if you’d like a daily fix of news, don’t forget to visit our website at www.irishbeauty.ie. Best wishes

New Irish hair extension brand revealed Irish hairdresser and extensionist, Ciara Dunne, has launched the Au-Parri hair extension brand.
Ciara realised the importance of quality human hair while applying hair extensions and spent four and a half years searching for the right 100% Remy double drawn hair, finally settling on hair coming directly from Indian temples. Women donate their hair to temples for religious beliefs; the temples then sell the hair and the money raised is reinvested back into the community for medical care and schooling. Au-Parri features keratin bonds, durable enough for a long life span but soft enough to not damage the natural hair shaft that they are applied to. A range of synthetic hair extensions is also available.

Plasma Pen facial launches at Wicklow Street Clinic
The Wicklow Street Clinic in Dublin has introduced clients to anti-ageing facial treatments using the Plasma Pen Lift. The Plasma pen uses the voltage in the air to create an electrical arch (plasma) between its tip and the skin. As this electrical arch touches the skin, it instantly contracts; excess skin is reduced, resulting in tightened/lifted skin, comparable to surgery. The Plasma Pen or Plasma Lift can treat lines between the eyes, lift the brow, and create a subtle lip lift, and offers a natural alternative to botulinum toxin, fillers and more invasive treatments. Results are said to last up to three years.

Such products have become known under a variety of guises, or marketing terms, – Dermaceutical, Cosmeceutical, Paraceutical and others – which essentially mean they are skincare products developed to a pharmaceutical grade, often containing a higher level of active ingredients than high street skincare products and thus, producing better results. In this article, we will refer to these types of products as Cosmeceuticals, but is there a legal standard that products making these claims need to adhere to? Tracey Tamaris, Director of the iiaa and distributor for Environ, says:
SKINCARE that gets active Developed to pharmaceutical standards, enhance your skincare results with Cosmeceuticals
“I think it is important to note that according to the FDA, the term “cosmeceutical” has no meaning under the law. The cosmetics industry created the word to refer to cosmetic products that contain pharmaceutical grade active ingredients. Legally, cosmetic companies do not need to prove the claims they make for these products, so working with scientifically researched, proven ingredients is the only way to be sure of a formulation’s efficacy.”

Beauty: Cosmeceutical Skincare............................................................................................................................................... So how exactly do Cosmeceutical products differ to those which do not make such claims? Clare O’Hanlon, Business Development Manager at Juliette Armand Skincare, explains: “Products that can be bought in a chemist or high street are cosmetics and cosmetics are only absorbed through to one layer of our five layers of skin. Typically, this means they provide somewhat temporary results to our skin conditions and this will leave us really disappointed. Fortunately, we have Cosmeceuticals to turn to which deliver fast effective results because the active ingredients can penetrate through to the layers of the skin causing significant changes. These visible changes have even been backed by clinical evidence.” Tracey Tamaris adds: “In order to treat skin conditions such as photo ageing, lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and problem skin, it is important to first understand the physiology of skin and what our cells need to remain healthy. Ranges such as Environ Skincare focus on chemicals that are proven to promote stem cells naturally, to normalise cell physiology, to promote healthy cell differentiation, protect the DNA of our cells and support a dense natural collagen and elastin network. Ingredients found in ‘cosmeceuticals’ need to protect our stratum corneum as well as normalise our melanocytes. We know that Vitamin A does all of these things and have research dating back to 1935 so this is always going to remain the mainstay of Cosmeceutical skincare.” In addition to Vitamin A, also known as Retinol, Clare O’Hanlon outlines other ingredients to look out for, saying: “The active ingredients are what makes cosmeceuticals special and these include Hyaluronic Acid – This holds 1000 times its weight in water and is an excellent hydrating ingredient…Glycolic acid is an effective exfoliator that retextures to refine and decongest the skin.
“[Clients] are actively looking for better ingredients such as Green Tea, Vitamins A, C, E, and enzyme Q10. These antioxidants are getting a lot of good press lately. The typical scrub just doesn’t cut it anymore now that Peels have surfaced, these professional exfoliators consist of Glycolic, Lactic, Salicylic and Mandelic Acids. Peels are known to deliver instant brightness and youthful glow to the skin because they exfoliate they skin on a much deeper level that a cosmetic scrub.” Andrea O’Donnell, National Educator - Beauty Division, Xpert Professional, adds: “The most common active ingredients are AHAs (water-soluble acids that gently peel the surface of the skin to improve pigmented skin and brighten the complexion), BHAs (Salicylic acid, which can go deeper into the pores to remove dead skin cells and excess sebum, targeting problematic skin).” Introducing a new Cosmeceutical skincare range could open up your skincare business to a new clientele looking for active skincare treatments that will do more than temporarily refresh their complexion. “Chances are your clients are concerned with sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and scars. Cosmeceutical products can help to reduce the appearance and depth, “ says Clare. “They can also offer deep hydration, retexturize the skin and stimulate collagen too. By offering facials with cosmeceutical products you are delivering quick results for your clients and they will more likely buy retail and rebook once they see how great their skin looks. “Therapists should encourage their clients to go for a more active range and take a picture of their skin before the process of facials or peels are performed, this monitors the changes and the client can see how effective Cosmeceutical products are. Also, clients can only purchase cosmeceutical products from a trained beauty therapist which makes it more personal and professional.”
Choosing a Cosmeceutical range • Research different brands, spend time talking to their educators, and see which offer the most support. • Try a treatment yourself and consider whether the experience would be one your clients would enjoy. Although the aim is for results, clients still want a pleasant treatment. • Check a brand’s ingredients and quality; a higher level of active ingredient will indicate it’s for professional- use only. • Read a brand’s independent clinical research and trial results – if it’s not offered to you, ask to see it. ‘Before and After’ photos are useful for you to use in your own treatment marketing, but it’s the real science you need to see. • Consider a brand’s breadth of product range – do they offer products to suit all of your clients’ concerns? • Find out what training is available to you, and what are the minimum qualifications needed to undertake it. • Check whether the product range is available at any other salons local to you. Avoid immediate competition. • What are the price points of the treatments and retail products? Consider whether you have a clientele, or would be able to attract new clients, who would pay enhanced prices. • Do they offer a retail range? For clients to get the most out of your treatments, they need to be able to continue use at home.

................................................................................................................................................... Beauty: Microdermabrasion
Professional Microdermabrasion is increasingly well known amongst clients, enabling them to visit skin therapists for resurfacing face and body treatments to tackle concerns over ageing, scarring, acne and dull skin tone. Today’s technology is gentle on the skin, without the need for downtime, and produces highly effective results that, with maintenance, can have a dramatic effect on the skin. “Microdermabrasion is a phenomenal treatment and is suitable for, pretty much, all skin types,” explains salon owner and educator, Marie-Louise Coster of All About Mi. “Whether you have concerns with pigmentation, fine lines, scarring, acne, dryness, dehydration, it really is a miracle worker.” Those new to Microdermabrasion may have heard the term, but perhaps not understand fully what the treatment involves. Essentially, it is a gentle but effective resurfacing of the skin, removing dead skin cells, debris and dirt from the surface using a gentle vacuum pressure usually with either a Diamond or Crystal tip. In Crystal Microdermabrasion, minute inert crystals are sprayed onto the skin which effectively lift debris from the skin’s surface, which is then vacuumed away. In Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion, a diamond-tipped wand is used across the skin’s surface, again lifting away dirt and dead skin cells, which are again vacuumed away. After treatment, skin is left smooth, intensely clean and ready to receive topical products. As a bonus, the vacuuming action can also have a lifting effect on the skin. Some treatment platforms also include the added benefits of Microcurrent, Radio Frequency and Coloured Light Therapy. After intensive initial treatments to get the skin really clean and work on areas of concern, clients should book a course of maintenance treatments. “Ideally, I would always suggest an initial course of 10 treatments over ten consecutive weeks,” advises Marie-Louise. “I appreciate this is an investment of both time and money, but it will achieve great results. I would always offer an incentive for the client to book a course, so perhaps pay for the 10 upfront and receive a discount, or pay for 10 and get their first maintenance treatment for free, because this is another essential element – they must continue with the maintenance to prolong the effects, and if they are coming to you for a genuine concern this should be easily understood.” To get the most out of your investment, don’t forget to market Microdermabrasion treatments for the body, as well as the face. “If your client has acne or acne scarring on their back you can do the same procedure there,” says Marie-Louise. “If someone has stretch marks, Microdermabrasion is a good treatment to reduce the appearance of them, and it is also great integrated into a pedicure for the successful removal of hard skin. “Microdermabrasion is a very versatile service and is a great addition to any treatment menu.” Turn the page to see our round-up of popular Microdermabrasion systems…

.........................................................................................................Marie-Louise Coster Writes: Autumn/Winter Nail Trends
A twist on bold, classic & clean nails Marie-Louise Coster talks fashion week inspiration for AW19 nail designs.
Renata Brenha’s debut show at London Fashion Week.
Dust off your striping brushes folks, nail trends for Autumn/Winter 2019 are going to be all about lines, edges and a twist on the good old French Manicure. Back at the start of the year, during fashion season, I worked on a lot of shows in both London and Paris with designers showcasing their collections for the Autumn/Winter season. There was everything from the bold to the more wearable, I saw everything. There really were some amazing collections and it was great to see nails being a bit more of a feature. Some of the classic brands, such as Hermes, opted for a classic, clean, nude nail. As I have said before, in previous articles, these are often more difficult to achieve. You have nowhere to hide anything, so you need to make sure you really clean underneath the nail plate and that your cuticle work is very precise...which there often isn’t time for when you are backstage at a fashion show.
For the Wesley Harriott Show inspired by 16th century Empresses, Marie-Louise created coffin shaped nails with a milky nude base with a line around three edges.

Marie-Louise Coster Writes: Autumn/Winter Nail Trends......................................................................................................... Nudes with highlight lines Some nude nails were a little more milky and had a twist, with the addition of a line. For the Wesley Harriott Show, I was asked to create coffin shaped nails; the shape was key to the collection which was inspired by 16th century Empresses and what they would wear today. The nails were a milky nude base with a line around three edges. Some nails had a white line, some had a black line, and some had a grey line. It was a very similar story for Renata Brenha’s debut show at London Fashion Week, but to tie in with the inspiration of the collection we worked on the natural nail and created a less perfect line all the way around the nail. The show was very much about working indigenous women and their hardworking hands, so they needed to be less perfect. Block colour & chrome nails For Edward Crutchley’s Autumn/Winter Collection, it was all about a block colour, again with the emphasis on the nail shape and length, which was long and sharp. We had black matte nails with a token set of chrome nails here and there. All of the girls had long, pointed, extreme nails and the boys had their natural nails painted black matte, with a couple of the models having a set of chrome nails. I was also fortunate enough to assist on many shows and there were block coloured nails, in deep autumnal shade, as well as reverse French nails in nude and bronze shades, very much reflecting the season. This is, after all, the season where we will see lots of deep, rich colours, very much statement nails. All of these designs are very easy to recreate within the salon, and to even adapt, to ensure your client is on trend
For Edward Crutchley’s Autumn/Winter Collection, it was all about a block colour, with the emphasis on long and sharp nails in matte black twith a token set of chrome nails here and there.

Back at the start of the year, during fashion season, Marie-Louise Coster worked on several Autumn/Winter shows in London and Paris.
Experiment with nail art If you love to create nail art, or just something more than a standard colour, spend some time experimenting. Take the colours from the collection of your chosen brand, take a look at the patterns and fabrics you see in the shops, look at the catwalk shows from around the world and take inspiration from all of it. Practice creating nail ideas on nail pops in between clients, or during your quieter times, and use them to inspire clients and drive bookings via your social media. You can also use them within the salon to show clients what can be created on their nails. A word to the wise, only have nail designs on display that you feel confident creating and designs that don’t take too long to create, so as they can be done in a commercially acceptable time, and, of course, don’t forget to charge for it! Nail art takes more time, it is more skill and it is more product. Charge your worth and don’t be ashamed to do so. If clients don’t like it they need not come back, there are plenty of others who will appreciate and value you, and you are much better off doing less treatments for a good price than doing a lot for a little price.

for the new season
T
raditionally a season when the brights of summer melt into warmer, more neutral tones, autumn brings us a palette of sumptuous nail shades, taking inspiration from across the globe, traditional Fall colours, textured fabrics and holidays. Not only do this season’s latest nail colour collections embrace darker tones and warm neutrals, there’s also a touch of glamour, including a new Gelish and Morgan Taylor collection inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s natural beauty, juxtaposed against rugged and rustic shades of nature from The Manicure Company. This season there’s also a nod to our adventurous side with Bio Sculpture taking us on a trip to Rome, OPI heading to Scottish shores, and Purple Professional taking on a whirlwind tour of International cities, whilst the sassy Uptown Style (Jessica) and City Girl (Gellux) collections offer an urban autumn staycation. Nostalgia is also at the forefront, with collections capturing sentimental memories and vintage hues whilst, as ever, there’s romance in the air with dreamy pinks making another appearance. Whether you use these new shades alone on fingers or toes, or combine into on-trend nail art (take inspiration from Mare-Louise Coster’s article on page 57), getting your hands on these fabulous new shades will bring your nail treatments right up to date ready for the new season…

Retailing: Liz McKeon Sunless Writes: Tan............................................................................................................................................................ Staff Retention..........................................................................................................................................
Retaining
your salon talent Liz McKeon offers her advice on how to keep the right people in your business. Staff management is time consuming and recruiting staff takes time, effort and can be costly. After you put in the time, effort and investment to hire the best employees possible, you need to retain that talent – this is great for you, your clients, your staff and your business. Salary, holidays and other perks are high on the list of why those great employees took the job in the first place, but they are not reasons enough to keep them in your employment for the long haul. Money is a motivator, yes, and commissions and incentive structures are also important to many people, but you might think that is a simple equation and that keeping staff happy and satisfied in their role is easy. It does take time and effort, but it’s well worth it as retaining staff is much more cost effective than recruiting and retaining new ones. Here are my top five strategies you can use to keep the right people in your business:
Liz’s five top tips on retaining staff 1. It is easier and more efficient to retain good staff than to recruit new members of the team. 2. There are three categories for motivating people. The need for: power, achievement and relationships. 3. Power People enjoy being in charge; they have a sense of control over the salon and they enjoy making decisions, stepping up to difficult tasks. 4. Achievement Motivated People are excited by major goals. They enjoy working hard and feel a rush of success when they achieve set targets. 5. Relationship Motivated People want everyone to get along. They dislike and avoid conflict, want to be liked and respected and help keep the team together.

Chance meetings in the staff room where social greetings are exchanged are good, but do not take the place of actually sitting down face-to-face and discussing work related problems.
......................................................................................................................................... ............................................................................................................................................................Retailing: Liz McKeon Writes: Staff Sunless Retention Tan
“In the long term, I find that most people are looking for Job Satisfaction – this is what will increase your employee retention rate.”
Strategy #1
Always greet people by their name, letting them know that you know and value their contributions to the company. Get their input about rules or changes that need to be made on the salon floor and encourage goal setting.
Strategy #2
Make your expectations and goals for the company clear. Job descriptions clarify what is required of employees. Communicate any changes directly, clearly and regularly. Good employees want to please you, but to do that, they need to know what it is they need to do to make that happen.
Strategy #3
Create an open and honest work environment. Give feedback and really listen with empathy to the concerns of your employees. Chance meetings in the staff room where social greetings are exchanged are good, but do not take the place of actually sitting down face-to-face and discussing work related problems. Always listen to new ideas and accept suggestions for problem solving, and be available and open when your employees ask for guidance. Never ever let rumours take over – keep your top talent informed about what is happening with the salon.
Strategy #4
Provide opportunities to grow and learn, letting your employees know there is room for advancement in your salon. Give challenging and stimulating work, and tap into their passion and allow them to focus their time and energy on exciting projects they can enjoy. Always let your team members know what career development plans you may have for them and what opportunities are available for them to grow with the salon.
Strategy #5
Recognise and reward good work. Monetary bonuses are always nice, but recognition of a job well done goes a long way to creating good will and loyalty. Recognition needs to be specific: “good job” is acceptable, but “good job with that colour correction” is better. In order to retain talent, you must make them feel appreciated, respected and worthwhile. Everyone needs to feel their contributions to the business are important, and feedback and praise must be sincere.

Beauty Talk: Anthony Veloso...................................................................................................................................................
Yazmine Lomax, marketing and communications executive at Flair Hair & Beauty Supplies, talks with the best in the beauty business.
BeautyTalk Anthony Veloso, Marketing and Brand Manager at award-winning sheet mask company BeautyPro, knows a thing or two about the skincare industry. Here, he offers the insider scoop on upcoming trends to help professionals stay ahead of the game.
Thanks for chatting with me, Anthony! Jumping right in, where do you feel the skincare industry is right now? Consumers nowadays pay a lot more attention to their skin and, of course, their skincare regimes. They want result-driven products. The big trends of vegan and clean beauty are playing a big part in skincare too because consumers want to ensure the products they use on their skin are ethically sourced and sustainable.
Speaking of trends, what upcoming movements should skincare specialists be aware of? Vegan and clean beauty and skincare are still set to be big trends for the future. With consumers now more conscious than ever about the types of products they put on their skin, there’s also a big focus on ingredients, specifically superfood ingredients such as Turmeric and Avocado which provide excellent benefits to the skin.
We’re seeing a real increase in the number of men becoming more interested in skincare. Why do you think this is? How can the industry work with this?
For sure! To finish up, Anthony, what are your top three skincare tips? Drink plenty of water, find products that work for you, and keep your skin hydrated!
The growth of social media has played a big part in the growth of male grooming - men want that Instagram-ready selfie too! Men, like women, are also concerned with signs of ageing, like wrinkles, and want products that can help tackle those skincare concerns.
Everyone really is skincare obsessed at the moment! So many bloggers and influencers are focusing on it too. Do you think this is a good thing? I think more bloggers and influencers talking about skincare is a great thing! It’s important everyone looks after their skin and feels comfortable with how they look so further awareness of skincare products that can help to solve common skincare problems is definitely a good thing.
