ure, you have your basic black. Your go-with-everything neutrals. The subtle pastels. But if you find yourself steering clear of brilliant, saturated color, you’re missing out on pretty pieces that will make your wardrobe pop. On the next few pages, we’ll show you ways to wear vibrant shades, from day to evening, without feeling overdone. Two things to remember when wearing the right bright: 1) Keep it streamlined. Look for items that fit well and aren’t too fussy. Bold color doesn’t hide flaws the way a more backgroundblending shade can. Fit is important. 2) Feel it. Bright color is a look-at-me statement. Yes, it can be a total mood-booster—but may not fit the bill on a day you’d rather be low-key.

Summer Fun

Beauty and the Beach Look and feel your best this summer— with expert advice on toning up, summer skincare and sitting pretty by the pool.

6 1

Tips for a … Beach-Ready Body If trying on swimsuits and hitting the beach has you feeling anxious, don’t worry. There’s still time to tone up for summer. Steve Lamont, author of Muscles in Minutes (Hatherleigh Press) offers the following six tips for looking your summer best:

Set reasonable, Goals provide a attainable goals roadmap that you will

follow in your pursuit of increased muscle mass or physical conditioning. When planning a goal, write it down. Being able to view your goal helps you understand the best way to attain it. Be positive and focus mentally on each aspect of your training, from mental training to diet, cardio, flexibility and strength training.

40

2

Don't starve Be sure to eat at least 1.2 grams of protein for yourself

every pound you weigh. Eat at least 6 to 8 small, protein-based meals a day and drink 8 to 12 glasses of water. Choose low-glycemic carbohydrates and be sure to take in essential fatty acids and the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals. Eating right will give you the energy for long days of swimming and beach volleyball.

Images: istockphoto

Include cardio 3 but don’t overdo it

Whether your aim is to shed some pounds or gain muscle mass, make cardio a part of your fitness program. But be careful not to go overboard. Losing weight too quickly can compromise muscle gains you have made, because it may prompt your body to protect itself by retaining its fat stores. You may lose the weight, but a high percentage will be muscle and not fat. So if you are trying to become lean and hold muscle mass, begin your cardio and diet months in advance of the summer season.

41

Beauty and the Beach

6

Find a workout For the best results In weight partner with don't forget negative training, negative similar goals to training. training takes your own. place when the muscle is being lengthened, in the negative phase of the rep. This is the strongest of all muscle contractions, and must be slow and controlled throughout the complete range of motion.

5

Stretching is important, but must be done properly to avoid injury. Each stretch must involve only one joint, and you should never feel any discomfort in the joint or ligaments. Do not time your stretches--hold them until you no longer feel tension. Be aware of your posture both inside and outside the gym. Good posture can help you do exercises correctly in the gym and look great outside the gym.

Always stretch before a workout, but make sure to do it right.

42

It is always best to have a workout partner with similar goals to your own. Your workout partner can support you mentally and provide proper spotting, which is absolutely necessary in making progress and avoiding injuries.

SKIN SUN COMPLEXION

IMPACT ON THE SKIN

What do all those numbers mean and what’s the best formulation for you? First of all, let’s address the cryptic numbers on the bottles. SPF stands for “sun protection factor.” It’s a method of measuring how long you can stay in the sun without burning.

Very Fair

Always burns easily; never tans

30

SPF

SPF

The meaning of sunscreen

To determine the appropriate level for you, multiply the SPF number by the number of minutes it would take you to start burning without protection So, if you would normally burn in 15 minutes without protection, a sunscreen with SPF 8 will shield you for about 120 minutes. If you’d burn in just five minutes, this same sunscreen would only protect you for 40 minutes. Many dermatologists agree that a sunscreen with SPF 15 is adequate for most people. Look for broad-spectrum formulas that protect skin from UVB (the burning rays) and UVA (those that cause sunspots, wrinkles and cancer.)

SUGGESTED FPF TO HELP AVOID SUNBURN SPF

SPF

6 2 2

SPF

50+ SPF

50+ SPF

15 10 10

Remember, reapplication is important , especially after swimming or sweating. Reapply every two hours or so is a safe bet. And don’t forget that using a higher level of SPF doesn’t mean you can skimp on the amount of sunscreen you apply. Using an SPF 30, for example, doesn’t give you double amount of time in the sun of an SPF 15. It takes about a full ounce of sunscreen (imagine a full shot glass) to amply cover your body. It’s a good idea to apply sunscreen before you head out. This way, you can make sure you get all the tricky spots before they burn. Plus, the chemical ingredients in most sunscreens take at least 15 minutes to react with your skin. Remember, lips need suncare too! Look for lip balm with SPF to keep your pucker protected. Soothing Sunburn OK. So you overdid it in the sun. And now your angry skin wants revenge. First, take a few aspirin or ibuprofen pills to reduce the inflammation. Cooling aloe gels may provide on-contact releif, but pick up a hydrocortisone cream to address the swelling. Cold 44

compresses will help sooth the skin, Keeping the skin moist will help alleviate peeling, so hop in a cool bath. Whatever you do, stay clear of hot water-the heat aggravates the skin and increases swelling. And next time, cover up. A bad sunburn only ups your odds of developing skin cancer.

Fake, Don’t Bake! Just a few years ago, a sunless tan meant streaky, orange, not-so-realistic results from self-tanners. Thankfully, as more and more women recognize the damage of the sun, skin and suncare companies have nearly perfected the sunless tan. A natural-looking tan can be yours within hours—even minutes! The newest formulations include a clear, spray-on aerosol version that is practically goof-proof to use. We also love moisturizers that include self-tanner. The color gradually builds with daily use of the lotion, creating a realistic, sun-kissed look. To get started, you’ll want to test the color to make sure it’ll produce the tan you want (without any allergic reactions). Choose a small inconspicuous spot, like on your tummy or upper thigh, and follow the instructions. Wait the allotted amount of time so the product can completely develop then decide if it’s right for your all-over tan.

45

Beauty and the Beach

Self-Tan Tips 1) Scrub up. Exfoliation is a key part of self-tanning. Tanner can cling to rough patches, making for a spotty finish. Shave your legs (this also removes dead skin cells) then grab a loofah or body wash with exfoliators to scrub away dry skin. Use a gentle scrub on your face. 2) Don’t overlook the “giveaway” spots. Blotches around your hairline or spots between fingers or on the sides of hands are dead giveaways that your tan’s from a can (or bottle!). Use a bit of moisturizer or petroleum jelly around the hairline, on eyebrows and in your belly button. After applying tanner to the rest of your body, wash your hands well. Then dab or spray tanner on the backs of hands and rub them together, keeping your fingers held together. 3) Start from your lower legs (don’t forget a swipe across the tops of your feet!) and work your way up. Circular motions help cover a larger area more quickly and evenly which, in turn, helps the tanner to penetrate more effectively. 4) Leave amply time for drying. Depending on the formula you select, drying time can vary. Your best bet is to give yourself enough time to hang around in an old, loose t-shirt as the tanner sinks in. In a rush? Try using your blow dryer on the cool setting to speed the process. And don’t apply tanner too close to bedtime. You (and if you opt for a tinted formula, your sheets) can end up a streaky mess.

5) If, after the tanner develops, you discover you made a mistake, scrub the area with an exfoliating body scrub or loofah. Fill in missed or patchy spots with a bronzer powder or gel. Sitting Pretty—and Smart!—in the Sun Before you head out: 1. Start by spreading sunscreen all over your body, head to toe. Make sure you get areas like under your bathing suit straps and along the edges of your suit. As you move around, so does your bathing suit, potentially leaving unexpected areas exposed to the sun. And don’t forget places like ears, the scalp where you part your hair and between toes! 2. Address any acne on your face with a bit of drying solution, then follow with sunscreen. Oil-free formulas help to reduce breakouts from clogged pores. 3. If you can’t face being bare-faced at the beach, touch up with waterproof mascara, a hint of bronzer and a little tinted lip balm. 4. Work leave-in conditioner into hair and comb through with a wide-toothed comb. Sweep hair away from face into a ponytail or behind with a headband or bandana. 5. Skin isn’t the only thing that can become irritated in the heat. Keep eyes cool and soothed with moisturizing eye drops.

No Kidding: Decorating for Stylish

Parents News flash: Having kids and having the home of your dreams do not have to be mutually exclusive. We spoke to some hot designers from all over the country to get their best tips for decorating your kid-friendly home. 66

Express Yourself. . . Designer and author Tracy Porter compares decorating to fashion. “You don’t have to wear unflattering and cheap clothes or change your personal style because you have kids,” she says. Same goes with home décor: “Don’t change it; learn how to make it work.”

It’s important, says this mother of three boys, for children to gain a sense of their parents’ personal style. When kids know something is important to their parents, they learn to appreciate it as well. Basically, children need to be taught to live with beautiful things around them. Enjoy your dream home now—don’t wait until the kids head to college! 67

No Kidding

“Don’t make your house into Romper Room just because you have kids,” adds Graciela Rutkowski of Graciela Rutkowski Interiors, Seattle, WA. Simply make the effort to teach kids respect for, and appropriate behavior around, furnishings, she says. Decorate the way you want, says David Phoenix, of David Phoenix, Inc. Los Angeles, CA. “Don’t avoid things you love because you assume they are going to be ruined,” he asserts.

. . .With Caution Do, however, use common sense. When dealing with hightraffic, family-focused rooms, choose durable fabrics for sofas and rugs. Patterns are a parent’s best friend, as they add color and interest while camouflaging dirt and stains. Shades of taupe, brown and green work well for the basics, then punch them up with bright, fun accessories, like pillows. All the designers agree: Go for the more expensive, delicate fabrics you love on pillows, curtains and throws. Sure, they may see a little wear (pillow fight, anyone?), but it’s a lot more cost-effective to replace a few pillows than, say, reupholster

the couch. This way, you get to incorporate that fabric you love into the family’s space without too much worry. Consider fabrics such as chenille and cut or crinkled velvet for accent pillows or dining room chairs, suggests Rutkowski. They have a formal feel but are more durable than silk. Additionally, she says, “There are so many great fabrics available now that are somewhere between residential, commercial and outdoor textiles.” These are great options in family areas and kids’ rooms and stay bright and beautiful, while being easy-to-clean. Rutkowski often uses mohair and ultrasuede fabrics on sofas and chairs. Frequently used for theater seating, these long-lasting fabrics stand up to lots of wear and tear. Fabrics like these and the ones mentioned above, she says, are investments. “They are not necessarily inexpensive options, but don’t fall into the trap of buying on the cheap because of the kids. You want things that have depth of quality and will withstand use over time.” In other words, you get what you pay for. Look for solidly constructed, well-upholstered pieces of furniture that will become family favorites. For the floors, Porter suggests wool treated with Stainmaster that can be spot-treated and cleaned regularly. She loves colorful, hooked rugs “especially in living spaces where kids are marching around with beverages and food.” You can find rugs in all sorts of stylish patterns and colors and they can be moved around to designate separate living areas. Toss one beneath the couch and coffee table, another under the dining table, for example. David Phoenix suggests opting for dark colors in carpeting and rugs. Says Graciela Rutkowski, “Pick a carpet or rug with texture or pattern. Save the white carpeting for master bedroom.” And if your heart is set on hardwood floors? Go for it, says Tracy Porter. “In dining areas, it’s very forgiving.” Though keep in mind, she says, “kids drag things across the floor.” So you’ll need to have a certain mindset when choosing this option—“scratches add character,” she laughs.

Personalize Your Home Your home should reflect your family’s lifestyle, taste and personality, while keeping safety, organization and, yes, sanity in mind. “Use paint to add color to your rooms,” says Porter. “It’s a great for dramatic effect and can update a room easily and inexpensively.” There are some changes you can make that will not only keep your kids and possessions safe but will add cozy character. Skip the glass coffee table, for example. Rutkowski 68

suggests an upholstered ottoman instead. It makes for a nice focal point in addition to soft landings. Plus, points out David Phoenix, it encourages a feet-up mentality with the bonus of extra seating. If you opt for a more traditional cof fee table, take a page from Porter’s style book and keep pricey knickknacks to a minimum. “I used to decorate my coffee table with unique antiques and books. Now, I’ve rearranged my things into a vignette on top of the buffet. Kids are less likely to reach up and put army men in the silver boxes,” she says. Choose decorative touches that are simple but elegant. A big, open basket, she says, is beautiful and easy to move for family game time. Bookshelves are also stylish, family-friendly room enhancers. “I’m a huge advocate of reading and having books around,”

says Porter. Use the top shelves for books for you and your partner; let kids store their books on the bottom rows. “Bookcases are beautiful, functional, and add an attractive layer of depth to the room,” she continues. Plus, they are readily available in a large range of styles and prices to suit your taste and budget. In addition to bookshelves, Phoenix recommends adding more organized spaces for kids around the home. He suggests designated areas for toys, cubbies near the back door, coat hooks painted with kids’ names along with a place to sit down to tie shoes and bulletin boards for notes and schedules. Creating a “homework area” for older kids, he adds, keeps schoolwork neat and accessible.

69

No Kidding

Words to Live By Graciela Rutkowski reminds that, while there may be certain delicate or breakable things that should be put away, it should only be for a short period of time. When safety isn’t an issue, your kids should be old enough to respect your décor. “Parents, especially new ones, think everything needs to be perfect and it’s not going to be. Your home may not be as clean as before,” reasons Tracy Porter. “Being organized helps you keep 70

a stylish home and cut down on clutter.” “I think it’s great to encourage kids to learn about your style and possessions, explain what it is and where things are from,” she continues. “Educate kids about this kind of stuff. They are interested in things when you take the time to explain them.” “Kids learn their taste from you. Pass that on,” concludes David Phoenix, “and give them a controlled area to express themselves.”

Cool Down by Walking The best part of the workout process – cooling down. It's important time for the body because it: • Brings the heart rate and respiration down slowly • Gives your muscles time to recover for the next activity. Also works out the lactic acid in the muscle. • Ends your workout on a positive note!

health High Blood Pressure also called hypertension, is a serious illness that affects nearly 65 million adults in the United States. High blood pressure is often called a “silent killer” because many people have it but don’t know it. Over time, people who do not get treated for high blood pressure can get very sick or even die.

78

What does high blood pressure do to your body?

relaxes (diastolic pressure).

Anyone can have high blood pressure. Some people are more likely to have high blood pressure including:

• Your blood pressure goes up and down during the day, depending on what you are doing. Brief rises in blood pressure are normal, but the higher your blood pressure stays, the more at risk you are.

• If your blood pressure is often greater than 140/90, you may need treatment.

• African Americans.

• People over age 55.

• People with a family history of blood pressure.

• If your blood pressure is greater than 120/80, and you have other risk factors, such as diabetes, you may need treatment.

High blood pressure can cause life-threatening illnesses like kidney problems, stroke, heart failure, blindness, and heart attacks.

Who is at risk?

Your chances of having high blood pressure are higher if you:

• Are overweight.

• Eat foods high in salt.

• Do not get regular exercise.

• Smoke.

• Drink alcohol heavily.

What are the signs of high blood pressure? Many people with high blood pressure do not feel sick at first. The only way to know for sure is to get your blood pressure checked by a doctor or other health professional.

How is high blood pressure treated? There are medicines people can take every day to control their high blood pressure. Only your doctor can tell if you need to take medicines.

How does high blood pressure affect pregnant women? A few women will get high blood pressure when they are pregnant. When pregnant women get high blood pressure, it is called preeclampsia or toxemia.

How do I control my high blood pressure?

Understanding your blood pressure: What do the numbers mean?

• Check your blood pressure.

•T ake your high blood pressure medicine every day if needed.

• Exercise often.

• Eat foods low in salt.

• Lose weight or keep weight at a healthy level.

• Do not smoke.

• Limit alcohol.

• Talk to your doctor regularly about your pressure.

•W hen you have your blood pressure taken by your doctor, you are told two numbers, such as 120/80. Both numbers are important. •T he first number is your pressure when your heart beats (systolic pressure). The second number is your pressure when your heart

love your heart... and live. Take action today to stop heart disease in women.

In 1997, only 7 percent of women believed that heart disease was the greatest threat to women’s health. Since the inception of Go Red For Women, that number has nearly tripled. Yet, in spite of our efforts, only one in five women (21 %) believe that heart disease is the leading cause of death among women. Additionally: • Specific knowledge of warning signs and prevention methods is lacking.

• Awareness among minority women (especially Hispanic women) and younger women remains very low. • Stroke awareness among women continues to be lower than that of heart disease. Bottom line: The number of women having open dialogue with their doctors about their risk for heart disease must improve. One woman will die almost every minute from heart disease

this year. Until more women are aware of this deadly — but often preventable — disease, this statistic is not likely to change. That’s why we need you! Please help us spread the word. Gain more knowledge. Take action. Help save lives. For more information visit goredforwomen.org or call 1-888-MYHEART (1-888-694-3278) today. 81

Over 628,000 women have increased their knowledge of their heart health by taking the Heart CheckUp, since early 2007. Go Red For Women is out to change your life. And the world. Before the American Heart Association introduced Go Red For Women, few people realized just how big a threat heart disease posed to women. Many were stunned to learn that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women. Go Red For Women was created to raise awareness of the danger heart disease poses to women and to urge every woman in America to take action.

T

hese two women have learned that being female is no protection against heart disease. They hope their stories help other women recognize the importance of actively loving their hearts. Nenette Madla I’m not your typical candidate for a heart attack. But I survived one on April 5, 2004, at age 32. While working at a hospital, I felt dizzy and nauseated. I thought I might be getting sick. I walked out of my office to deliver files when suddenly I felt an excruciating pain in the center of my chest that radiated to my neck. “Am I having a heart attack?” I asked myself. My heart began to race as I tried to remain calm and desperately walk to the elevators. I could barely move as the pain became more severe with each step. I felt light-headed as the beads of sweat on my forehead and palms of my hands formed. I could see hospital employees walk by and acknowledge me, but I couldn’t respond. It was if I was in the Twilight Zone. Finally, a co-worker came to my side and got me to the Urgent Care Center where I was immediately given nitroglycerin. I had an EKG done and lab work drawn; however, to my surprise, the results were not consistent with a heart attack. During a visit with a cardiologist the next day, I found out there was a blockage to my heart. So I underwent cardiac catheterization to place stents in my left anterior descending artery, which had blockage and ruptured plaque. During surgery, my artery tore, requiring three stents to keep it open. I will never be cured of heart disease; however, I can control its progression. For the rest of my life, I will be on medications and have regular follow-up visits with my cardiologist. Daily exercise and a healthy diet are paramount. I must admit, these major changes in my life were difficult at first. But I want to grow old with my husband and watch my daughter get married and have children of her own. I share my story to emphasize the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and to encourage women to take charge of their health.

Susan Mahler In 2001, at the age of 56, I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure — the last thing on my mind because there had been no heart disease in my family. After a little time in the hospital, I returned to my role as principal at Olympic View Elementary School in Chula Vista, California. I had erased this new development from my mind — until around Christmas 2002 when I had difficulty breathing. I wanted to believe this had nothing to do with my heart. But on Jan. 11, my husband’s birthday, I was in the emergency room, beginning my “heart adventures.” I have no memory of the next three weeks in the hospital. My family filled me in: I had valve surgery, one replaced and one repaired. The surgery went well, but the muscle around the heart was “gray and flabby,” and doctors said they could only try to make me comfortable. I was shocked when I was told about my only chance of survival — a heart transplant at the University of California–Los Angeles. I was on the No. 1 list and given two powerful drugs to keep my heart beating. Five days later, with no new heart, I declared, “I’m not dying. I’m recovering.” I continued to get stronger, and finally my doctor discharged me. After returning home, and going through physical and psychological tests and meeting with the UCLA transplant team, I was placed on the No. 2 transplant list in May 2003. Doctors then implanted an ICD – Pacemaker/ Defibrillator. I felt energized. Today, I’m on the “Status Seven” list at UCLA, which means that these unbelievable procedures, medications and equipment are keeping my heart going! If I slip back, I’ll return to the No. 2 list. Now, our daughter Trish has been diagnosed with the same valve problem. Fortunately, it was discovered early, and with discoveries in heart research, we hope she won’t find out what it’s like to be on a heart transplant list. So my message to you is critical: Don’t ignore symptoms. If you have heart disease in your family, take note. And please give to the American Heart Association to help support research on heart disease. I want to be here next year and for many more! So please help spread the word about taking care of our bodies. And please give — in any way possible — to fight heart disease. We need you so we can keep singing our song: “The Beat Goes On.” 83

Hiding in plain sight Rosacea is widespread and treatable – but only if you know you have it.

Although rosacea affects an estimated

14 million Americans, many people mistake it for acne, a rash, or sunburn. In fact, it is a chronic condition for which there is no known cure. The good news is, there are ways to help manage it. Rosacea can vary substantially from one person to another. Sufferers typically experience flushing and persistent facial redness on the central area of the face, especially the cheeks, nose, chin, or forehead. Many people with the condition also have bumps and/or pimples. For a small percentage of those affected, rosacea may cause excess tissue to form on the nose, a condition known as rhinophyma. While progression of rosacea is unpredictable, in most people, rosacea is cyclic: it may flare up for a period of weeks to months and then signs and symptoms lessen for a while before flaring up again. Rosacea patients may have a damaged skin barrier, so it’s important to develop a skin-care routine that includes a mild cleanser, a moisturizer, and sun protection to help repair the damage and improve skin sensitivity. Treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of rosacea you have. Current strategies involve using gels and creams (also known as topical agents) to treat the redness, bumps, and pimples, with or without oral treatment.Talk to your doctor about which treatment is right for you.

If irritation is excessive or persists, use of FINACEA® Gel, 15%, should be discontinued, and patients should consult their physician (See ADVERSE REACTIONS). • Avoid any foods and beverages that might provoke erythema, flushing, and blushing (including spicy food, alcoholic beverages, and thermally hot drinks, including hot coffee and tea). • Patients should report abnormal changes in skin color to their physician. • Avoid the use of occlusive dressings or wrappings. Drug Interactions: There have been no formal studies of the interaction of FINACEA® Gel, 15%, with other drugs. Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility: Long-term animal studies have not been performed to evaluate the carcinogenic potential of FINACEA® Gel, 15%. Azelaic acid was not mutagenic or clastogenic in a battery of in vitro (Ames assay, HGPRT in V79 cells {Chinese hamster lung cells}, and chromosomal aberration assay in human lymphocytes) and in vivo (dominant lethal assay in mice and mouse micronucleus assay) genotoxicity tests. Oral administration of azelaic acid at dose levels up to 2500 mg/kg/day (162 times the maximum recommended human dose based on body surface area) did not affect fertility or reproductive performance in male or female rats.

Pregnancy: Teratogenic Effects: Pregnancy Category B There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of topically administered azelaic acid in pregnant women. The experience with FINACEA® Gel, 15%, when used by pregnant women is too limited to permit assessment of the safety of its use during pregnancy. Dermal embryofetal developmental toxicology studies have not been performed with azelaic acid, 15%, gel. Oral embryofetal developmental studies were conducted with azelaic acid in rats, rabbits, and cynomolgus monkeys. Azelaic acid was administered during the period of organogeneisis in all three animal species. Embryotoxicity was observed in rats, rabbits, and monkeys at oral doses of azelaic acid that generated some maternal toxicity. Embryotoxicity was observed in rats given 2500 mg/kg/day (162 times the maximum recommended human dose based on body surface area), rabbits given 150 or 500 mg/kg/day (19 or 65 times the maximum recommended human dose based on body surface area) and cynomolgus monkeys given 500 mg/kg/day (65 times the maximum recommended human dose based on body surface area) azelaic acid. No teratogenic effects were observed in the oral embryofetal developmental studies conducted in rats, rabbits, and cynomolgus monkeys. An oral peri- and postnatal developmental study was conducted in rats. Azelaic acid was administered from gestational day 15 through day 21 postpartum up to a dose level of 2500 mg/kg/day. Embryotoxicity was observed in rats at an oral dose that generated some maternal toxicity (2500 mg/kg/day; 162 times the maximum recommended human dose based on body surface area). In addition, slight disturbances in the postnatal development of fetuses was noted in rats at oral doses that generated some maternal toxicity (500 and 2500 mg/kg/day; 32 and 162 times the maximum recommended human dose based on body surface area). No effects on sexual maturation of the fetuses were noted in this study. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy.

*Subjects may have >1 cutaneous adverse event; thus, the sum of the frequencies of preferred terms may exceed the number of subjects with at least 1 cutaneous adverse event. FINACEA® Gel, 15%, and its vehicle caused irritant reactions at the application site in human dermal safety studies. FINACEA ® Gel, 15%, caused significantly more irritation than its vehicle in a cumulative irritation study. Some improvement in irritation was demonstrated over the course of the clinical studies, but this improvement might be attributed to subject dropouts. No phototoxicity or photoallergenicity were reported in human dermal safety studies. In patients using azelaic acid formulations, the following additional adverse experiences have been reported rarely: worsening of asthma, vitiligo depigmentation, small depigmented spots, hypertrichosis, reddening (signs of keratosis pilaris), and exacerbation of recurrent herpes labialis. Post-marketing safety–Skin: facial burning and irritation; Eyes: iridocyclitis on accidental exposure with FINACEA® Gel, 15%, to the eye (see PRECAUTIONS). OVERDOSAGE FINACEA® Gel, 15%, is intended for cutaneous use only. If pronounced local irritation occurs, patients should be directed to discontinue use and appropriate therapy should be instituted (See PRECAUTIONS).

Anatomy of a Salad Salads are usually served at the beginning of a meal, but a salad can also make a healthy, low-calorie meal all by itself. When you use lots of fruits and vegetables, they can also be loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. The key to keeping salads interesting is to change the ingredients each time you make one. Don’t just think of the simple garden salad, but imagine adding fruits, nuts, and lean meats to your salad to make a great low-calorie, highly nutritious meal. How Much Salad is Enough for a Meal? Use the calorie calculator to determine how many calories you need per day, and divide that number of calories by the number of meals you want to eat for the day. If you are eating 2,000 calories per day, you might want to allow yourself 500 calories per each of three meals and 500 for snacks. Or, you could opt for a lighter breakfast and a larger dinner, depending on how you feel. A dieter who is eating 1,300 to 1,500 calories per day might want a smaller salad, maybe 300 to 400 calories. Keeping a food diary is a good way to keep track of your calories and nutrition.

Salad Dressing One tablespoon of regular commercial salad dressing will add 50 to 80 calories, so be careful to measure how much you use. A large salad may tempt you to use a lot more, just remember that one-quarter cup of dressing could add up to 300 calories. Low fat dressings are available, which offer fewer calories, but they may not taste as good. A salad with a variety of fruits and vegetables really doesn’t need any dressing; some freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice will likely be enough to suit your taste. The Ever Changing Salad Salads can be changed and adapted to any diet. Choose low carb green vegetables for low carb diets and use low-fat or no dressing for low-fat diets. Choose the lowest calorie ingredients if you are watching your calories. Keep lots of salad fruits and vegetables on hand, and you will find it easy to create salads several times per week. Change the ingredients to create completely different flavors, and you will never get bored with healthy salad meals.

Anatomy of a Salad Greens

Fruit

Nuts

Most salads start with a pile of greens. Since greens are low in calories and are a good source of fiber, it’s a great way to add volume to your meal without adding a lot of calories. There are different varieties of lettuce, such as iceberg, leaf, spinach, escarole, romaine, or butter. The darker lettuces offer more vitamins than pale iceberg, for example. Spinach has iron, and all varieties are low in calories. One cup of shredded lettuce has about 5 to 10 calories.

Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, apple slices and raisins add vitamins and antioxidants. The delicious burst of flavor and sweetness they add can also help you cut back on, or eliminate, high-calories salad dressings. A half cup of apple slices has 30 calories, and a half cup of berries has about 40 calories.

Sprinkle a few nuts like walnuts, pecans, almonds, or cashews for a nice crunch.

Vegetables

Meat and Cheese

Legumes

Almost any raw vegetable can be cut up and added to a salad. Green beans, snap peas, carrots, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, asparagus, artichokes, avocados, tomatoes, and cucumbers are all great suggestions. We need five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day, so eating a salad is a good way to meet those needs. Brightly colored vegetables have bioflavonoids. The dark green vegetables are lowest in calories, about 20 calories per half cup serving.

To make a meal of a salad, you may wish to add some healthy protein sources like chopped or sliced hard-boiled eggs, lean beef, cooked shrimp, tuna, chicken breast, or strips of cheese. Make sure to measure your protein sources, since meats and cheese have more calories than fruit or vegetables. Avoid fried meats like chicken strips or battered and fried shrimp. They contain unhealthy fats and lots of calories. A quarter cup of chopped chicken meat or one egg will add 75 calories. Half a can of tuna? About 80 calories. Two ounces of cubed or shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese may add up to 200 calories.

A class of vegetables that includes beans, peas and lentils.

92

Just a few nuts will do, about one-eighth cup of nuts adds about 90 calories. Walnuts are a great source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, and all of the nuts add protein and heart-healthy polyunsaturated fatty acids

They are among the most versatile and nutritious foods available: typically low in fat, contain no cholesterol, and are high in folate, potassium, iron and magnesium. They’re also a good source of protein and can be a healthy substitute for meat, which has more fat and cholesterol.

A Salad to Try Here is a great delicious, healthy salad: • two cups of green leaf lettuce • one-forth cup raw green beans • one-forth cup snap peas • one-forth cup chopped tomato • one-forth cup sliced carrots • one-forth cup apple slices • one-forth cup blueberries

• one-forth cup chopped chicken breast • one chopped hard boiled egg • one ounce of shredded mozzarella cheese • one-eighth cup walnut pieces • lemon and lime wedges This salad has lots of vitamins, antioxidants, phytochemicals and fiber and comes in at just under 400 calories. Serve this salad with a glass of iced-herbal tea or a big glass of sparkling water with lemon.

How Fitting Try this on for size: Finding the right bra can drastically improve the way you look and feel.

98

Size Matters According to research by the makers of Bali®, approximately 70% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. This is a staggering statistic considering women wear the undergarments for support and comfort. This means that more than half of the population of women in this country could look and feel better with just one simple adjustment—the right bra. “[Many] women in America are wearing the wrong size bra,” says Georgia Donovan, fashion stylist and wardrobe coach. “Most of them are uncomfortable and most of them are too small.” Donovan recommends getting measured by a lingerie specialist and purchasing a bra based on your true size and lifestyle. If you are a runner, for example, it would be wise to add a good sport bra to your collection.

Get the Fit Without the proper brassiere, many women suffer from poor posture, shoulder strain, pinching and binding and clothes that don’t fit as well or look as good as they could. Women need to find the bra that not only fits their body type but also gives them the benefits they want— whether that is greater support, soothing shoulder straps or sexier cleavage. Experts recommend annual bra fittings for most women, especially those who have recently lost or gained weight, had a baby or experienced other changes in their bodies. A fitting only takes minutes and the results can be dramatic.

The Put On The right bra will not only help you look better, but feel more comfortable. Studies show that the average B-cup woman is carrying 5-7 pounds in her breasts, the average C-cup woman is carrying 8-14 pounds in her breasts and the average D-cup woman is carrying 15-23 pounds in her breasts. The right bra should be engineered to support the weight comfortably and effectively with no pulling, poking or tugging involved. The way you put on your bra can also make a big difference in the way it looks and feels. Donovan offers the some great tips: 1) Bend forward, put the bra on and fasten. 2) Smooth the skin of the breasts into the cups.

3) Stand up straight and see how the straps fit and feel. They should be comfortable without feeling constricting. Adjust accordingly. 4) Adjust the back of the bra so it lies smoothly between shoulder blades Remember that, with the exception of push-up styles, the cups of your bras should completely contain your breasts. 99

How Fitting

Q. A.

My bra is very uncomfortable, cutting and binding when I move. Is it the wrong size?

Q. A.

My straps keep falling off my shoulders. What should I do?

Q. A.

Q. A.

100

Maybe. Hook the back closure less tightly or try the next larger band size. Also, if your bra has narrow sides, it may be the wrong style for you. Try a bra with wider sides.

The cups may be too big. Since you’re not filling out the top of the cup, your straps slide down your shoulder. Try a smaller cup size.

Underwire bras can be so un-comfortable—poking on the sides and pressuring my rib cage. What can I do? Make sure you’re wearing the right size and support level for your figure. Bali’s Interactive Fit Guide will help you identify your unique needs. A cup size that is too small places the end of the underwire right on the tender breast tissue, so you may need a larger cup size. Some full-breasted women experience poking on the sides, even when wearing the correct size.

How can I best care for my bras?

Your bra will provide longer wear and support if you follow the proper washing and drying instructions on your care label. If the label suggests hand-washing, use a cleansing product designed for delicate fabrics. For machine-washable bras, attach hooks and eyes to avoid tangling, then place bras in a lingerie bag before washing on the delicate cycle, in cool water with gentle detergent. And never put bras in a clothes dryer. Air dry only.

Bra Fitting Facts •B ra-wearers are getting younger. Twenty years ago, 12- and 13-yearolds generally were the first age group to start wearing bras. Today it is common for 8- and 9-year-olds to begin wearing them. • During the [last 20 years], the average bra size has increased from 34B to 36C. • Statistics show that 70 percent of women are not wearing a properfitting bra. The most common mistakes: the wrong size or the wrong style for their figures.

• In 1913, the first modern brassiere to be awarded a patent was invented by a New York socialite named Mary Phelps Jacobs, but the first bra was actually invented by Otto Titzling. • In the early days of the bra’s invention, the undergarment was made to flatten the breasts and did not have cups at all.

• To get the correct band size, women should measure directly under their breasts and add 5 inches. To get the correct cup size, women should pull a tape measure up under their arms and measure at the top of the chest wall. Then, for each inch over the band size, add one cup size (1 inch = A, 2 inches = B and so on.) •F or the best fit, women always

should wear bras on the middle hook. • Every woman should be fitted by a professional every year, especially after a major life change, such as having a baby, weight gain or loss of more than 10 pounds or taking on a new exercise regimen. • Bra cups should fit smoothly. If the cup is not filled out, women should wear a smaller size. If there is overflow at the top or at the underarms, women should wear a larger cup size for a fuller shape and more coverage. • Most women have one breast that is larger than the other. If the difference is significant, Bali suggests trying a bra with a stretch fabric in the cup or a bra with fiberfill. Also, women can adjust the straps so the one supporting the larger breast is looser than the other one. Always fit the cup size to the fuller breast first. — from the makers of Bali®

Weekend Revival

Feeling forgetful? Suddenly sluggish? Have you forgotten to schedule time for yourself? Follow our two-day guide to rejuvenation and get back on track.

102

Images: IStockphoto

S

lowing down may be the last thing you have scheduled on your to-do list. Being busy may make you feel responsible and vital, but putting aside some time for you and your well-being

is essential. You need time to regroup, prioritize and focus on the things you may take for granted: your health, emotions and self-esteem. While you don’t necessarily have to do everything in one all-about-you weekend, it may be the self-improvement boost you need to be off and running on a new lifestyle track. 103

Weekend REvival

First, make it happen. Start by planning for your personal rejuvenation weekend by making provisions for the things you normally tend to. Decide on the two days you’re going to set aside, then work towards making them happen. Don’t make any appointments or accept invitations for those days. Clear your desk at the office or your calendar at home to allow for this time off. Look to friends and family to help you clear your schedule, care for your kids and pets and support you in treating yourself. Now is a good time for dad to take the kids for a weekend away—maybe grandma and grandpa could use some company?

Next, stock up for your time out. Pick up a beginner’s yoga or stretching DVD and a nature-sounds CD or download. Head to the grocery store and grab some goodfor-you foods your body’s been craving that perhaps you haven’t had time to prepare. Fresh fruits and veggies are a great basis for good meals, desserts and “smart” snacks. Lean chicken, fish and wholesome cheese round out your weekend menu.

Friday evening. First, clear your mind of all the daily tasks you inevitably have to do. Make a list and then set it aside—you’ll get back to it on Monday. Now, onto dinner. Tonight, it’s all about comfort food—the dishes you love but tend to steer clear of, due either to dietary concerns or time constraints. This time, however, you’re going to indulge in a comfort food that not only feels indulgent but does your body good as well. Try a soothing baked potato, topped with fat-free sour cream, chives and shredded cheese. Potatoes are not only a filling familiar food, but have been shown to enhance sleep and well-being due to the release of serotonin. Set a place at the table for yourself, light a candle and enjoy the solace of your quiet, indulgent, solitary meal.

Friday night. It’s a great time for a steamy shower. Bring along a loofah or body brush to exfoliate dead, dry skin and increase circulation. Slather on a rich body cream and wrap up in your snuggly bathrobe. Tuck moisturized feet into slippers. Reach for a small glass of heart-healthy red wine and curl up on the sofa with that novel you’ve been meaning to crack open. 104

Makejust time e! for m

Don’t wait until you need toothpicks to keep your eyes open. Chances are, it’s not often you can enjoy quiet, uninterrupted sleep with no alarm clock (or kids!) to answer to. So make the most of it. Sprinkle your sheets with a light lavender pillow spray, a scent prized for its sleep-promoting properties. Pop a sounds-ofnature CD into the player or download to your iPod and be lulled to sleep with the sounds of a waterfall, the ocean, wind or rain. Sweet dreams.

Saturday morning. Sleep until you wake naturally to get the most out of your night’s slumber. Try to remember that you don’t need to be anywhere or doing anything so as not to jar yourself to wakefulness. Open the shades in your room to allow in the daylight, then tuck back under the covers for a few more minutes. Once you’re fully awake, swing your legs over the side of the bed and clasp your hands together in front of you. Raise your arms over your head and stretch, gently pulling up on one arm, then the other. Next, grasp hands behind your lower back and raise arms slowly until you feel the stretch. Now standing, raise one arm up and over your head, pulling gently up from the waist. Repeat on the other side. Drop arms before you and do your best to touch your toes. Time to hit the bath. This tub-time is meant to invigorate and revive. Run a warm—not hot—bath and add bath salts with fragrance, such as citrus, ginger or green tea, to get your senses started. Towel off and moisturize, paying special attention to rough spots like elbows, knees and ankles. A light, healthy breakfast will jumpstart your system. Why not mix up a tasty smoothie? Blend together your favorite fruits, like bananas, strawberries, blueberries or melon with some protein-rich soymilk and a few cubes of ice. Get your daily fiber with some wheat toast or bran flakes cereal. Don’t forget to take your daily vitamin supplements to ensure proper nutrition.

Saturday afternoon. Remember those videos you picked up a while back? Get into your workout gear— comfy, not baggy, clothing and supportive workout shoes. Yoga may be just the thing. Besides being a great strengthening workout, yoga is based on principles of reconnecting the body and mind. Breathing, control, con105

Weekend REvival

centration and self-awareness are key components. Sounds pretty good, no? Next, how about calling up an old friend you’d be meaning to touch base with? Maybe put together an email newsletter about the things happening in your life. Send to friends you haven’t been in touch with lately and encourage them to do the same. Ask to plan a time in the near future to get together—and really make it happen. Sharing experiences with caring friends makes you feel loved and supported. Don’t underestimate the importance of reaching out. You’ll not only feel better, you’ll make someone else feel good too. Enjoy a freshly prepared lunch, like tuna salad over greens. Don’t gulp down your food in front of the television or absentmindedly while reading a book. Take the time to taste and appreciate your meal; you’re less likely to overeat if you’re paying attention to each bite.

Saturday evening. Time to get some fresh air—lace up those sneakers and hit the neighborhood for a heart-pumping power walk. The benefits of exercise are undisputed—both physical and emotional. Don’t use this time to mull over problems or

impending work, keep focused on you. Appreciate your surroundings—cliché as it is, take time to smell the roses. And listen to the birds and feel your muscles and heart beat. Be in the moment and revel in it. Back at home and cooling down: Has it been a while since you’ve had the time to think about your hands and nails? Start by filing nails into the desired shape and length. Then soak hands in warm, sudsy water. Pat dry and apply cuticle oil to each nail, massaging into cuticles. Next, gently push back cuticles with a clean orange stick. Avoid scratching the nail plate or jabbing at the cuticles. Wash hands with antibacterial cleanser and apply a rich hand lotion. Pop hands into cotton gloves to generate heat and help the moisture penetrate skin. Begin preparations for tonight’s dinner—marinating a chicken breast, chopping veggies, etc. After about 15 minutes, remove the gloves and massage any remaining cream into hands. Use a cotton ball soaked in nailpolish remover to get rid of lotion residue on nails, then polish in your favorite color. As nails dry, pick up that novel or put on some classical music and just relax. After dinner, try out a meditation DVD or podcast to help you learn the basics of cleansing your spirit and mind.

Saturday night. Write a letter to your significant other, spouse or child. Let him or her know how much you care. Share your appreciation for your weekend alone and promise to plan a special activity for the two of you. Now it’s back to bed. Sleep tight.

Sunday morning. Cook up a yummy, healthy egg-white omelet, packed with flavorful veggies like peppers, onions and broccoli. Stay in your PJs later than you should.

Sunday afternoon. Rent that emotional chickflick you’ve wanted to see—but no one else would watch with you. Laugh, cry and cry some more. It’s good to unleash these emotions. 106

Sunday evening. Give yourself a foot massage. Here are some do-it-yourself tips from Spafinder.com: 1) Start with a foot soak in warm water mixed with ordinary table salt. Use a pan or a bubbling foot spa and keep the feet immersed for 15 to 20 minutes. Then dry them thoroughly. 2) Apply cream to your hands, rubbing them together briskly to warm them. (Don’t use oil: when hands get slippery, applying pressure is difficult.) 3) Hint: When you work on one foot at a time, keep the other warm by draping it with a towel. For a calf massage, place your hand under the knee, squeeze gently on the calf, then slide hand down to the ankle, squeezing five times along the way. Repeat the action on the front of the leg from knee to shin. Repeat, increasing pressure. 4) For the foot pad and arch, place fingers lightly across top of toes, thumb against the sole. Use your thumb to press in a circular motion. Continue the circular motion as your hand moves across the foot in a horizontal path. Removing your fingers from the top of the toes, slide your hand slightly closer to the arch and repeat the side-toside massage. Continue until you have massaged the area under the instep. 5) For toes, rub each between fingers and thumb, pulling up gently, then press the flesh between the toes. 6) For heel and ankle, support the heel with your cupped hand and move your thumb in a circular motion around the heel pad, applying increasing pressure. 7) Finish by pinching behind the ankle several times. Run your fingers along the top of the foot, then stroke the entire area from foot to knee. Repeat, more gently each time, until done. Sit down to a healthy dinner, don’t forget to have a little guilty pleasure for dessert—it’s the last meal of your weekend sojourn.

Sunday afternoon. Cuddle up with that book or finish off another rented movie. Your all-about-you weekend is almost over. A good night’s rest and you’re back to the real world—refreshed, more relaxed and ready to tackle whatever comes your way! 107

Money Smart Kids Teach them to understand the consequences of spending. By Linda Leitz, CFP There is a struggle every time you and your grade-school child go shopping: she asks for every toy and snack. As the money gatekeeper, you want your child to have a treat, but each time you buy something, more is requested. Your junior-high student begs for more clothes, but every outfit you buy is passé within a month. You refuse to buy your son a sports car. He gets a job, his grades decline, and then his transmission goes out. He can’t get to his job, but his monthly bills for car insurance continue. Sound familiar? Kids and money – sometimes the financial demands from your children make you feel like money flows through your fingers like water. Most young people graduate from high school knowing nothing about budgeting and they cannot balance a checkbook. Most recent college graduates find that their first major adult challenge is digging out of debt. Educating your family about money management can help you and them. Your children’s comfort handling money and the role it plays in life can make a huge difference in someone’s outlook. Basic financial concepts help children get a sense of their own financial priorities. This does not mean that there will not be learning curves. But, far better to make mistakes as a young person than as a person in his 60’s who suddenly realizes he won’t ever be able to retire. 108

There are building blocks in learning financial responsibilities. Children are capable of learning at an early age that if they spend money on something now, they won’t have money to spend on something else later. Over time, your children can learn to save money for a goal. Access to money of the child’s own will give the child the satisfaction of making her own purchasing decisions. Setting guidelines of what your kids may buy and giving praise – or sympathy – for decisions made will be the lion’s share of your job relative to the children’s monetary decisions. The focus will shift from you as money gatekeeper – because you don’t let them have something – to the consequences of the decisions your children have made themselves. You can help your child begin to be a savvy consumer.

While chops are baking, coat apple rounds with lemon juice and a drizzle of olive oil. Season with grill seasoning or salt and pepper and a little nutmeg. Star Treatment For Your Feet!

15 Steps to Fabulous Summer Feet

T

ime to step into the hottest sandals of the season, but are your feet ready to be unveiled? Probably not since, according to Dr. Leslie Campbell, a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “During the winter, our feet are cooped up in heavy socks and heavy shoes and may be extra dry due to the lack of moisture in the air,” she says. In addition, the average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. So, it’s no wonder we sometimes want to take a break and treat our feet to a little pampering, especially during the warmer months.

In order to start the season off right, make smart choices when it comes to grooming and indulge your feet in the VIP service they deserve. The following at-home treatments, recommended by the foot experts at the APMA, will help get your feet ready to make their debut for the sexiest shoe season of the year! 114

Salons know how to do things right, and now you can too, with the new Cutex® pump and nail polish remover pads. The pump dispenses just the right amount of Cutex® every time so you can make fast work of nails with no spills, no mess. The ultra-convenient remover pads provide that salon quality you desire for when you are on-the-go. Being America’s #1 branded nail polish remover is cool.115 But now we’re totally pumped!

Pampering Prep

Fabulous Summer Feet

1) Fill a bucket with warm water and be sure it is large enough for both of your feet to soak. 2) Find a comfortable chair where you can relax and place the bucket in front of the chair. 3) Remove nail polish with non-acetone polish remover. 4) Stimulate foot circulation and warm up your feet by propping one foot at a time on your lap. Grasp the foot and begin slowly moving your thumbs from the top of your toes to the bottom of your heel and back. Repeat this stroking technique as many times as needed to get your feet warmed up for some serious pampering. 5) Use a nail clipper to cut toenails straight across. Then, use an emery board to smooth the nail edges by filing in one direction without drastically rounding the edges. Dr. Campbell says, “When toenail edges are rounded it increases the chance for painful ingrown toenails to develop, so be sure to cut toenails straight across.”

Soothing Soles 6) Soak feet in the bucket of warm water for at least 5 minutes. 7) Remove feet from the bucket and dip either a foot file or a pumice stone into the water. Next, use the file or pumice stone to gently smooth the skin around the heel, and the balls and sides of your feet. Dr. Campbell reminds us to “stay away from a foot razor because it removes too much skin and can cause an infections and permanent damage to the skin if used incorrectly. A foot file or pumice stone will [work well] and is much less dangerous.” 8) For extra soothing and softening, use a scrub and massage your entire foot and lower leg. The scrub exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin buildup that is often caused by wearing certain types of shoes. Remove the scrub with a damp towel. 9) Use a fresh towel to pat feet dry and be sure to dry between each toe. While drying, loosen your foot joints but cupping your heel with one hand at the ankle and grabbing the top of your foot with the other hand. Then, rotate the foot slowly at the ankle a few times in each direction. 10) Apply and massage a healthy amount of emollientenriched skin lotion all over your feet to hydrate the skin and increase circulation. For added relief and relaxation while moisturizing, use your thumbs to apply extra pressure to the ball of your foot and arch. This will help to release tension in your arches. Then, for all over relief, use your hand to squeeze your Achilles tendon (the fleshy area above your heel), one foot at a time for five seconds. Repeat two or three times. 11) Gently push back cuticles with an instrument such as a cuticle pusher or manicure [orange] stick. Cuticles, which are located between the nail and the underlying soft tissue, provide a protective barrier against infects and should never be cut. Destruction of the cuticle could result in infection and incessantly pushing back your cuticles will only make them thicker. 116

Finishing Toe Touches 12) Remove the moisturizer from your toenails and in between toes by using soap and water. “If the moisturizer remains in between your toes, it can increase the likelihood of developing a foot infection like athlete’s foot,” says Dr. Campbell. “The retained moisture also promotes nail fungus, which is a discoloration and thickening of the toenail.” 13) Only of you have healthy nails should nail polish be applied. While it may make your toes look pretty, Dr. Campbell tells us that “nail polish locks out moisture and doesn’t allow the nail or nail bed to ‘breathe,’ so people

who suffer from already discolored toenails will aggravate their condition by not allowing their nails to be exposed to the air.” Whether you have discolored nails or not, it is advisable to remove polish regularly. 14) B efore bed, very lightly wrap cellophane around your entire foot. The cellophane will act as a makeshift sauna by locking in moisture. By morning, your feet will feel soothed and soft. 15) C ontinue to keep your feet healthy all season by protecting the exposed with a waterproof, oil-free sunscreen every time you slip on your favorite pair of sandals or go barefoot at the beach. 117

Q &A

from a Pro

Q. Often when I buy a new pair of shoes they

feel comfortable in the store, but after wearing them only a few hours, they feel unbearably tight. Why does this happen?

A. Always shop for shoes in the afternoon or

evening because feet tend to swell throughout the day. “If shopping in the beginning of the day, prior to being on your feet for an extended period of time, your feet may actually be smaller and you may be purchasing shoes that will ultimately be too tight,” explains APMA member Dr. Jane Andersen.

Q. I just bought a new pair of sneakers and I

have noticed that after I workout my toes hurt and both of my big toenails are starting to look a little discolored. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

A. This is a very common situation because

many people forget to have their feet measured while standing in the shoe store. You shouldn’t rely on the size of your last pair because shoe models can vary and feet can get larger and wider over time (especially during pregnancy). The reason your toes hurt after your workout is most likely because your shoes are too small and your toes are jamming into the front of the shoe with every step. Andersen says, “When buying running shoes you should have a thumb’s width of room at the end of the toe when standing to provide ample room for your feet.” Your nails are becoming discolored because the jamming has caused the nails significant trauma. If you continue to workout in these sneakers, your nail could become so damaged that it may fall off or need to be surgically removed. Another important point about which Dr. Andersen reminds us is that “runners should replace sneakers every 300-500 miles.” Even if they look brand new, the soles and insoles are most likely worn from hours of pounding the treadmill. Exercise walkers should replace sneakers every six months.
