Fashion Spring Trend

Report 2012 Sheer and sultry, with vibrant pops of color, this season’s silhouette is a breath of fresh air. Shed your winter skin and slip into chiffon, silk, and lace in an array of soft pastel and nude colors. Look for pieces with pleated waistlines and peekaboo textures, perfect for layering unexpected colors underneath. “Pastels and colorblocking are huge this spring as are bra tops

and chiffon in all forms. When putting together the looks for this editorial, I noticed the colors were reminiscent of those most popular in the 50s and 60s. So we went for a modern, casual version of a 1950s starlet - as if Marilyn Monroe were to come back to embrace her inner Norma Jean.” - Amber Mortensen, Wardrobe Stylist & Fashion Writer, PainfullyHip.com

Black Dress Transcends Fashion

Since Coco Chanel introduced it in 1926, the little black dress has become the epitome of timeless fashion. It is the answer to every "What should I wear to..." question from cocktail parties to holiday parties to class reunions. As a concept, the little black dress has even moved on to represent an ideal of a perfectly simple, yet sexy object. Even the computer industry recognizes the need to inject a bit of "little black dress" into its design and marketing. A fashion anomaly, the concept of the little black dress never changes, much unlike the trendcrazed industry. It remains the height of chicness. The LBD knows no social, style or size boundaries. Whether it costs $1,000 or $50, is a size 2 or a size 22, it is still a little black dress. Everyone wants to own at least one perfect little black dress. Through the years, the little black dress has undergone hemline, shoulder, strap and fabric variations and this season is no different. Little Black Dress Facts Before Coco Chanel introduced it as a fashion color, black was primarily used for mourning. Even a book has been dedicated to it: "Little Black Dress," by Amy H. Eldelman. Little Black Dress Tips Always in style: a knee-ish length (right above, at or below) sleeveless sheath. Keep legs bare or in very sheer hose for the dressiest looks. An updated twist is to add patterned hose. Feel free to embellish the look with sparkly earrings, bag and cover-up because the simple black dress carries accessories well. Trends

Paisley Is Here to Stay Another Big Trend This Season - Anything Paisley Fashions that scream color and fun! Dresses, skirts, blouses, handbags, shoes, will all be out there for the pickings... Paisley will be infused into so many great fashions this season. It's no surprise that many celebrities and designers incorporate this pattern into their home decor or wear it as a fashion statement. Paisley Prints Are Classicly Used In Spring/Summer Fashions! We know that some patterns never seem to go out of style, although their popularity occasionally rises to the level of a trend. Paisley definitely falls into that category, Let’s take a look at the history of paisley, which celebs are fans and a few ways that you can incorporate this pattern into your own home. What’s in a Name? When you think of paisley, you probably picture the trademark teardrop shape accented with floral motifs. This pattern originated in either Persia or India and eventually found its way to Europe. The name itself came from a town in central Scotland that became known for producing shawls featuring the pattern.

Paisley Border-Print Dress $39, chadwicks.com

28

Paisley’s popularity extended to the new world, specifically the old West. Have you ever looked closely at a red bandanna? They actually feature a black and white paisley pattern. During the psychedelic 1960s, paisley became synonymous with hippie culture and free spirits. These days, paisley patterns appear on shawls and scarves, shirts, dresses, and even pants. Consider adding a bit of paisley into your spring/summer wardrobe!

We challenged our beauty expert, Flora Wade, with interpreting the “mermaid” look as 3 wearable and fabulous trends for real women this Spring! Icey White Eye Shadow Freshen up your look with sparkly white shadow! Your eyes will shimmer with an inner glow when shadow is swept over the lid and inner corner. Flora used Too Cool from Maybelline Eye Studio ColorTatoo. This is a wonderful product that goes on as a cream and drys as a silky smooth, crease proof shadow. Just a little goes a long way! For best results, keep your application light and sheer. Trends are constantly changing and for Spring 2012 blush is minimal. Enchance the skin without overpowering it. Try Loreal Magic Smooth Souffle Blush in Plume, a beautiful cream that creates a soft, ethereal tint. For lips, Flora chose a subtle stain to compliment the bright and beautiful eyes. Our fave: Sassy Mauve Outlast from Cover Girl. Finish the look with a clean, pearlescent polish, reminiscent of mother of pearl seashells.

Inspired by the runway, yet oh so wearable, we love this glossy trend for eyes! Start with a soft lilac shadow: Maybelline Eyestudio Shadow in Lavendar Legend. The Expert's Secret: To add an extra vibrant pop, Flora smoothed Baby Lips over the shadow, creating a glossy, wet effect . Baby Lips gloss is also an awesome way to highlight the top of the cheek bones, giving skin a fabulous glow!

Saving Energy Starts

at Home

By Sabina Covo

There is a vast menu of innovative energysaving products in the market that will help you save money, energy, and of course, Mother Earth. A decade ago, the most efficient way to save energy was a basic assumption: turning off the lights when leaving a room. Luckily today, there are many innovative products that can help us with simple tasks like this one and they give us no excuse to not save energy – all while keeping our homes beautifully lit and our money savings high. All too many experts are quick to point out that there is a huge number of energy saving products you can buy at the stores to help you with the first step in protecting the planet: starting at home. For those of us who cannot think about simple items like switching off lights before you leave a room, experts have created a motion-detecting light switch that uses passive infrared technology to keep tabs on, whether or not there are people in a room. As long as the sensor detects body movement and knows that the room is occupied, the lights stay on. But when motion is no longer sensed, the switch jumps into action and does the responsible (and energy-efficient) task of turning the lights off.

The Magic of LEDs If your home has a track lighting system, switch out those hotrunning halogens for one of the most energy-efficient light

44

bulbs on the market: light emitting diodes, or LEDs. Not only is the average LED lifespan up to 30 times greater than that of a halogen bulb, but LEDs also use up to 80% less energy, and produce a virtually imperceptible level of heat. Because they run cool and don’t increase ambient temperature in the rooms they’re used in, LEDs are much safer to handle, and can actually reduce your cooling costs. 30 LED GU-10 track light bulbs cast intense, warm white beams of light, and otherwise look just like a traditional track lighting bulb – only you will know how much energy and money you’re saving. Lighting accounts for about 20% of the electric bill in the average U.S. home.  The easiest way to start saving energy on lighting is to change out the light bulbs in your current fixtures.

Using EnergyStar Lighting Rozzane Weissman, a senior director at the Alliance to Save Energy, says “Another great way to save the most energy and money and protect the environment is to replace your highest use bulbs and fixtures with ENERGY STAR qualified lighting and lighting fixtures. An ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) will save about $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in about 6 months. It uses 75 percent less energy and lasts about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb.” And for your comfort, CFLs are available in many shapes sizes to replace incandescent light bulbs in your existing light fixtures -- spirals, reflectors, globes, and other specialty bulbs.

...there is a huge number of energy saving products you can buy at stores to help you begin the first step in protecting the planet: start at home. choice. This product also contains 75% less mercury than standard CFLs, making them even safer for the environment. Super MiniSize light bulbs are available in 15, 20, and 23-watt models to replace 60, 75, and 100-watt incandescent light bulbs, respectively. Earthmate also recommends the Dimmable Reflector CFLs which are designed for recessed cans and down lighting applications. They maximize usable light by reflecting light downward instead of losing light inside the can. Earthmate Dimmable Reflector bulbs can dim to 5% of their light output with standard dimming circuits, so no additional equipment is needed. For those of you who are hooked to your beautiful three-way table lamps and fixtures, there are three-way CFL light bulbs which are fixtures to provide three different light settings: low medium and high. Its soft white light is perfect for creating a warm glow while cutting back on energy usage.

It’s All About Our Planet When we speak about energy saving, it is all about our planet, and the company Earthmate has created three wonderful residential friendly products which are considered the most environmental responsible in their line. These products help conserve natural resources used in energy generation - such as coal, oil, and natural gas - while reducing green house gas emissions. Their energy saving, eco-sensitive CFL light bulbs are designed to reduce electricity consumption, prevent greenhouse gases, and fight global warming - all while providing long-lasting, economical, and reliable lighting for your home. Jim Ouellette, Vice President of Consumer Markets for Earthmate describes, “Changing bulbs in your house is the right thing to do on many levels. First, it’s an easy way to reduce your energy use and save money on electricity. A single CFL can save $50-$100 over its lifetime so imagine if you replaced your entire house! On a more macro level, CFLs help conserve natural resources like coal and oil that are used to generate power. And by reducing their consumption, less CO2 and other so called greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, which scientists have proven to be the leading cause of global warming. Finally, if there are children in the house, switching to CFLs and implementing other conservation measures, like recycling, changing faucet aerators, etc. sets a very positive example and establishes awareness of the need to protect our environment.” If you are looking for a product that will fit in most fixtures, the mini-size bulbs that are smaller than standard CFLs should be your

NEW!

Also, don’t forget about surge protectors and strips. Products like the USB EcoStrip 2.0 (www.ecostrip.com) can help you save energy in an environmentally-friendly fashion by eliminating a phantom load from outlets and can save you up to $150 a year. It looks like an ordinary power strip, but it actually turns off when the computer is not in use. The U.S. Department of Energy has said, “In the average home, 75% of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed when the products are turned off. This can be avoided by unplugging the appliance or using a power strip and using the switch on the power strip to cut all power to the appliance.” Well, with this device, you don’t have to switch anything off anymore – it automatically does it for you. According to the Alliance to Save Energy, the 2011 total average U.S. household expenditures on energy was around $4,000 and this year it should decrease dramatically if we all take energy saving measures in our homes. So, remember to put your home on an energy saving “diet for 2012.” Save energy, save money, take tax credits and help Mother Earth: just how much better can it get?

Have a

Kid-Friendly

Home By Sabina Covo

Express Yourself. . . Designer and author Tracy Porter compares decorating to fashion. “You don’t have to wear unflattering and cheap clothes or change your personal style because you have kids,” she says. Same goes with home décor: “Don’t change it; learn how to make it work.” It’s important, says this mother of three boys, for children to gain a sense of their parents’ personal style. When kids know something is important to their parents, they learn to appreciate it as well. “Don’t make your house into Romper Room just because you have kids,” adds Graciela Rutkowski of Graciela Rutkowski Interiors, Seattle, WA. Simply make the effort to teach kids respect for, and appropriate behavior around, furnishings, she says. Decorate the way you want, says David Phoenix, of David Phoenix, Inc. Los Angeles, CA. “Don’t avoid things you love because you assume they are going to be ruined,” he asserts.

. . .With Caution Do, however, use common sense. When dealing with hightraffic, family-focused rooms, choose durable fabrics for sofas and rugs. Patterns are a parent’s best friend, as they add color and interest while camouflaging dirt and stains. Shades of taupe, brown and green work well for the basics, then punch them up with bright, fun accessories, like pillows. All the designers agree: Go for the more expensive, delicate fabrics you love on pillows, curtains and throws. Sure, they may see a little wear (pillow fight, anyone?), but it’s a lot more

46

cost-effective to replace a few pillows than, say, reupholster the couch. This way, you get to incorporate that fabric you love into the family’s space without too much worry. Consider fabrics such as chenille and cut or crinkled velvet for accent pillows or dining room chairs, suggests Rutkowski. They have a formal feel but are more durable than silk. Additionally, she says, “There are so many great fabrics available now that are somewhere between residential, commercial and outdoor textiles.” These are great options in family areas and kids’ rooms and stay bright and beautiful, while being easyto-clean. Rutkowski often uses mohair and ultra-suede fabrics on sofas and chairs. Frequently used for theater seating, these long-lasting fabrics stand up to lots of wear and tear. Fabrics like these and the ones mentioned above, she says, are investments. “They are not necessarily inexpensive options, but don’t fall into the trap of buying on the cheap because of the kids. You want things that have depth of quality and will withstand use over time.” In other words, you get what you pay for. Look for solidly constructed, well-upholstered pieces of furniture that will become family favorites. For the floors, Porter suggests wool treated with Stainmaster that can be spot-treated and cleaned regularly. She loves colorful, hooked rugs “especially in living spaces where kids are marching around with beverages and food.” You can find rugs in all sorts of stylish patterns and colors and they can be moved around to designate separate living areas. Toss one beneath the couch and coffee table, another under the dining table, for example.

News flash:

Having kids and having the home of your dreams do not have to be mutually exclusive. We spoke to some hot designers from all over the country to get their best tips for decorating your kid-friendly home.

David Phoenix suggests opting for dark colors in carpeting and rugs. Says Graciela Rutkowski, “Pick a carpet or rug with texture or pattern. Save white carpet for the master bedroom.” And if your heart is set on hardwood floors? Go for it, says Tracy Porter. “In dining areas, it’s very forgiving.” Though keep in mind, she says, “kids drag things across the floor.” So you’ll need to have a certain mindset when choosing this option— “scratches add character,” she laughs.

Personalize Your Home Your home should reflect your family’s lifestyle, taste and personality, while keeping safety, organization and, yes, sanity in mind. “Use paint to add color to your rooms,” says Porter. “It’s a great for dramatic effect and can update a room easily and inexpensively.” There are some changes you can make that will not only keep your kids and possessions safe but will add cozy character. Skip the glass coffee table, for example. Rutkowski suggests an upholstered ottoman instead. It makes for a nice focal point in addition to soft landings. Plus, points out David Phoenix, it encourages a feet-up mentality with the bonus of extra seating. If you opt for a more traditional cof fee table, take a page from Porter’s style book and keep pricey knickknacks to a minimum. “I used to decorate my coffee table with unique antiques and books. Now, I’ve rearranged my things into a vignette on top of the buffet. Kids are less likely to reach up and put army men in the silver boxes,” she says. Choose decorative touches that are simple but elegant. A big, open basket, she says, is beautiful and easy to move for family game time.

NEW!

Bookshelves are also stylish, family-friendly room enhancers. “I’m a huge advocate of reading and having books around,” says Porter. Use the top shelves for books for adults; let kids store their books on the bottom rows. “Bookcases are beautiful, functional, and add an attractive layer of depth to the room,” she continues. Plus, they are readily available in a large range of styles and prices to suit your taste and budget. In addition to bookshelves, Phoenix recommends adding more organized spaces for kids around the home. He suggests designated areas for toys, cubbies near the back door, coat hooks painted with kids’ names along with a place to sit down to tie shoes and bulletin boards for notes and schedules. Creating a “homework area” for older kids, he adds, keeps schoolwork neat and accessible.

Words to Live By Graciela Rutkowski adds, "While there may be certain delicate or breakable things that should be put away, it should only be for a short period of time. When safety isn’t an issue, your kids should be old enough to respect your décor. “Parents, especially new ones, think everything needs to be perfect. Your home may not be as clean as before,” reasons Porter. “Being organized in the beginning help helps cut down on clutter.” “I think it’s great to encourage kids to learn about your style and possessions, explain what it is and where things are from,” she continues. “Educate kids about this kind of stuff. They're interested in things when you take time to explain it.” “Kids learn their taste from you. Pass that on,” says Phoenix, “and give them a controlled area to express themselves.”

Home Improvement

Decorating and How to

Mistakes

Avoid Them

The art of home décor can be creatively frustrating and not completely intuitive. Chances are you love a teacup, a vase or a statue, but how will it complement your home? Can you create a theme and stick to it?

T

here are so many tricks to the trade, but here are some common mistakes people make when decorating a home, and tips on how to avoid them.

1. Choosing the First Swatch of Paint You See

Christopher Lowell, an expert on color and design who has his own show on the Fine Living Network says “Color is by far the thing that will do the most heavy lifting,” he says. But several people rush into stores and are daunted by the array of shades and colors and end up choosing a can of paint rather rashly. “Place your swatches on a surface you’ll walk by for at least a week, “ says Lowell. “You’ll automatically eliminate all other colors you dislike, except three or four.” Choosing a good color takes time, so indulge in prolonging the decision making until you are absolutely sure it will work for you. A good rule of thumb is – if you can wear it, then you can paint with it. If a color looks good on you, chances are you’ll be pleased with that color on your walls.

48

2. Using Too Much Bright Fabric There’s nothing worse than having a bright blue silk pattern on your sofa only to discover a year down the road that the color and texture is so 1980's. “If you step back two feet, and squint your eyes, you will see if the texture works,” says Lowell. When you pick upholstery, pick a solid color and texture. Remember, bright fabric will draw attention to that particular texture: it will also easily date a room, so make sure your choice is classic, timeless, and gender neutral.

3. Fake Flowers And Plants Are A “No No.” But there are exceptions to the rule.

The first impression when someone steps into your home is paramount. Surely, you don’t want them to notice the fake flowers in the basket or the plastic creeper on the wall? Most designers will agree that this practice is a “no no” but there are exceptions to the rule. If you invest in one beautiful plastic tree (such as a palm tree), and put fresh flowers in vases in the other rooms, people will assume all your foliage is fresh. There is so

much maintenance that goes into keeping real plants looking pretty that having one fake fern is not going to do heavy damage. But remember “commercial flowers are usually grown with dangerous pesticides and chemically fertilized,” says Kimberly Rider, author of The Healthy Home Workbook. Growing organic flowers in your backyard is not only healthier, but it’s the cheaper option.

4. Using Too Many Prints. Don’t Make Your Home Look Like A Jungle

You can replace the fifteen pillows on your sofa, or toss a few away; but having busy looking upholstery is not that easy to change. When you decorate a room, try to achieve a timeless look and choose solid prints.

5. Having Too Many Objects on Display

Most Americans are pack rats and pile up too many items in their homes over time. The rule of thumb is to toss anything you haven’t used in over a year. “Only surround yourself with things you can connect with,” says Lowell. “Save only the things you can respond to.” Kimberly Seldon, host of the television series Design for Living, says, “when in doubt, err on the side of ‘too big’ and you won’t be sorry. You’ll instantly improve your style quotient.” Your high school medals, thimble collection, cup and saucer collection and the entire glass menagerie need not and should not be displayed. Think of how they will coordinate with your furniture or large paintings. A lot of the time, the scale of these objects is so small that you cannot even see them. “Practice the art of restraint,” says Lowell. Of course, there are ways to reduce clutter. Have a yard sale, put items up for sale on eBay, or join Freecycle.org and give away your largesse to someone who can benefit.

7. Not Utilizing Windows To The Best Of Their Advantage.

Make the windows sing: use curtains, drapes, valances or blinds that really capture the style of the room. An expert from HGTV. com says, “Bed sheets and blankets are made for the bed, not the window. Window treatments not only finish off a room, they’re like jewelry for it.”

8. Having too Many Area and Floating Rugs

Instead of having too many floating rugs, anchor your living room with the use of one key rug that people will not trip over. But make sure “your area rug is big enough for the space; otherwise it looks like you’ve put a placemat on the floor,” says Missy Scherzer, a member of the Society of Decorating Professionals. A rug should always cohesively harmonize with the furniture.

9. Not Using Lighting to Its Best Advantage We tend to ignore the most basic requirement: good lighting. Mastering the art of ting will take years, but there are a few basic rules that people may well worth mastering. “Incorporate table lamps, sconces, lamps and library lights to create interest within a room and to draw attention to favorite collections and artworks,” says Seldon. Lighting should serve to highlight beautiful work of art, as well as make the room functional for reading and entertaining.

10. Hanging Artwork too High

6. Not Utilizing Wall Space Enough Imagine this scenario: there is a huge wash of wall space between two windows. Instead of covering this wall with several shadow boxes, pedestals with beautifully furnished vases, many people will use it for sofas and bookshelves. “Build up, not out” says

NEW!

Lowell. If you have a doll collection, small artifacts or a beautiful glasswork collection you want to show off, utilize the entire wall space – not just the base of the wall. Put creative shelves up, shadow boxes that showcase your collections, or use decorative containers to add punch to your walls.

Don’t make people crane their neck to see your beautiful paintings. There are exceptions to this rule. For example “a double height space may require a piece of artwork (e.g. a painted canvas, photograph or tapestry) to hang above six feet,” says Seldon. “In such case, choose a very large image or something abstract, so its presence isn’t lost at the distance.”

ish you had the long lean lines, impeccable posture, and toned muscles of a professional dancer? For years, celebs have sung the praises of ballet style exercise classes and their ability to transform their bodies! Madonna, Kelly Ripa, Natalie Portman, and Ginnifer Goodwin are just a few of the high profile ladies to proclaim their love for Barre based workouts. For women who have never danced in their lives, the thought of a ballet inspired class can seem intimidating (if not impossible!) But the beauty of Barre is that it is

designed to help non-dancers achieve an incredible ballet physique – no prior training necessary! We met up with Shannon Higgins, owner of Studio Barre, La Costa, and former ballerina for the NYC Ballet, to create a simple 7 step workout that will target your glutes, abs, and obliques. Love doing the moves at home? Don't be afraid to try a class at one of the plethora of new studios around the nation where trained instructors can help you refine your technique and achieve the figure of your dreams!

The History of the Barre Every ballet class begins at the barre, a wooden support attached to the walls of ballet studios. Ballet dancers use the barre for balance while performing several ballet steps. Exercises done at the barre are the foundation for all the other ballet exercises. When performing at the barre, rest your hands lightly on the barre for balance. Try to keep your elbows relaxed. 1. Plie Barre almost always starts with plies. Plies are performed at the barre because they stretch all the muscles of the legs and prepare the body for the exercises to follow. Plie's train the body in shape and placement. Plies should be performed in in all of the 5 basic positions of ballet. There are two kinds of plies, demi and grand. In demi plies, the knees are bent halfway. In grand plies, the knees are completely bent. 2. Eleve Eleve is another step often performed at the barre. Eleve is simply a rise onto the balls of the feet. Similarly, a releve is a rise onto the balls of the feet from a plie position. Practicing eleves and releves at the barre will help strengthen your legs, ankles and feet. They are considered one of the building blocks of dance, and one of the first movements taught in a beginning ballet class. Practice eleves in all five positions of ballet.

NEW!

3. Battement Tendu A battement, easiest when performed at the barre, is a type of exercise in which the working leg opens and closes. There are several different types of battement. A battement tendu is an exercise in which the foot is stretched along the floor, ending in a point. Battements tendus help warm up the legs, build leg muscles and improve turnout. A battement tendu can be performed to the front (devant), to the side (Ă la seconde), or to the back (derriĂŠre). 4. Rond de Jambe Rond de jambe is another popular exercise often performed at the barre. A rond de jambe is performed by making a semicircular motion with the working foot on the floor. A rond de jambe is performed in order to maximize turnout and increase flexibility of the hips. This movement can either be performed with the working foot on the floor or in the air. When the circle begins in the front and moves to the back it is called a rond de jambe en dohrs. On the other hand, when the circle begins in the back and moves to the front, it is referred to as a rond de jambe en dedans.

Fitness Knees Up

54

Get your heart pumping, core engaged, and muscles warm! Alternate lifting your left and right knee up in parallel position. Start with hands on hips and then stretch them above your head for more challenge. Do 3 sets of 1 minute each.

Fitness Wide Second

Begin by stretching the side body and thighs in wide second at the barre. Second Position Plies done with a weight are a great way to strength your core, thighs, and hamstrings. Choose a 2, 5, or 10 lb hand weight depending on your fitness level. With feet turned out, and back straight, bend knees until your thighs are parallel to the ground. Pulse with small up and down movements for 30 seconds. Repeat 3 times.

Wide Second Twist

Add a twist to target those hard to reach obliques! Again, bend knees parallel to the ground. Holding your plie, twist your torso right and lift the right heel. Try to isolate the top half of your body so that the bottom doesn't move! Hold and pulse for 30 seconds and then repeat on the left.

55

Fitness 4th Position to Front Attitude

With feet turned out, lightly grasping the barre (or back of couch), step the right foot forward. Lift heels as high as you can and bend deeply into the knees. (Knees should be straight above the toes) Pulse up and down in releve for 1 minute, feeling the burn in both thighs and butt! Repeat with the left leg forward. For an advanced transition into attitude, lift the front leg, striving to raise the heel in line with the knee and point the toes. Pulse lifted leg up for 30 seconds, plie standing leg up and down for 30 seconds, and then combine the two for maximum burn!

Lunge Lift

56

Sculpt your seat and thighs in one killer move! From chair pose, extend the right leg back 2 feet and lunge deeply until your shin is parallel with the floor. There should be one straight line extending down from your shoulder, to hip, to knee. To engage the hamstring, lift the back leg and squeeze your heel towards your booty, maintaining the low lunge in your left leg. Do 20 reps, lunge and lift, and then switch sides. The barre is also a great tool to stretch and lengthen the back of the leg. To cool down, place your leg on top of the bar, heel up, toes turned out. Stretch up and over, lengthening through both sides.

Fitness Double Leg Chair

Grasp the barre (or back of couch) with both hands. With feet straight forward, thighs slightly apart, slowly bend knees into a chair pose. Make sure your back is straight and thighs are parallel to the ground. Sit as low as you can! Hold for 30-45 seconds. For a more advanced move, raise heels up and down, maintaining a nice, low chair pose.

Seated Pretzel

Great for whittling the dreaded muffin top area! Sit with right leg bent forward and left leg bent backwards, toes pointed and chest lifted. Shift weight forward slightly and lift the back leg off the ground one inch, striving to lift the knee and toe equally. Hold there or do small lifts for 20-30 seconds. Switch sides. Modification: This exercise can also be performed by contracting the glutes, keeping the knee on the ground and lifting only the ankle. Reach ankle up and towards the glute, pulsing for 20-30 seconds.

Fitness

Ask the Pro: Q&A with Shannon Higgins Shannon Higgins studied and performed ballet for 15 years under the direction of Linda Yourth, principal dancer/ instructor for the NYC Ballet. Always a fitness enthusiast, 12 years ago she became NASM certified as a personal trainer, and developed her own business, FIT. When a client introduced her to a barre class, she was hooked! After experiencing the tremendous benefits of this type of technique, she knew that she had a found a way to fuse her passion for ballet and personal training. In 2007, she opened her own Barre Studio in North County San Diego and has dedicated herself to bringing barre to women and men alike! Q. I've never done ballet or barre work before...will I be out of place in a class? A. All barre workouts are designed to develop dancer like bodies without having years of technical training. Instructors insure that every client is comfortable with the technique and is working at a safe and effective level through hands-on corrections, verbal cues and demonstration. Q. What is the best attire? A. Leave your tutus at home! To get the most from your barre class it is best to wear long yoga style pants, a comfortable top that covers your mid-drift and socks. Barre classes focus on a specific muscle group at one time and therefore it is important to keep your idle muscles warm until they are ready to become the focus. Q. What makes Barre class special and different from other types of workouts? (Yoga, Pilates, Gym Circuits...) A. There is good reason for the rapid growth and popularity of the barre technique. Although there are elements of yoga and pilates, barre is a workout like none other. With little or no equipment involved, it will change your body in only a few classes creating definition in your arms, a lifted seat and lean thighs. No need to spend hours at the gym or pay for a personal trainer....60 minutes in a barre class and you will have addressed every muscle group and feel worked! Q. What body parts can I expect to see a difference in? What will the affect on my body and health be? A. After taking just a few barre classes, most people notice that they feel taller and see more tone. The barre technique focuses on strengthening the core, enhancing posture and proper alignment while sculpting those hard to get areas like the abs, seat and thighs. Q. How often should I go to class or do the exercises at home? A. A great start would be 2-3 times a week, but to get the most out of your barre workout you will want to increase your workouts to 3-4 times a week. Class choreography is constantly being updated to avoid muscle adaptation so that each class remains fresh and you are always being challenged. Q. What do you love most about Barre? A. Barre workouts are the most effective and efficient way to get the body you've always wanted. Whether it's your first class or your 50th, the barre technique, with quality instruction, is designed to challenge you at any fitness level. You will receive motivating, personalized training in a musically driven, dance studio inspired environment.

How Confident is Your Smile? Millions of people aren’t getting the right oral care. When it comes to oral health, many households share a single product. Yet, in any given family, each member can have very different oral care needs. With all these different needs, why try a one-sizefits-all oral care solution?

The following bit of guidance is here to provide you with a wealth of oral health – information you can use on your next pharmacy visit to make sure that each member of your family can get the oral care that is right for them. SENSITIVITY 66 million people suffer from sensitive teeth – but they don’t have to. Did you know that the short, sharp pain felt when hot, cold or sweet food or drink hits the teeth is caused by exposed dentin? Nerves within the tooth are triggered by hot and cold due to worn enamel or receding gums. The good news is that there’s a simple way to treat sensitivity. Build up protection by using Sensodyne® twice daily, and you could relieve tooth sensitivity in as little as 2 weeks. DRY MOUTH Have dry mouth? Waking up thirsty? Having trouble swallowing or speaking? 1 out of 4 adults suffer from dry mouth. The most common factor contributing to dry mouth is the use of medicines. Over 400 commonly prescribed drugs list dry mouth as a potential side effect. And dry mouth sufferers may have an increased risk of cavities and oral infections. There’s no reason to suffer needlessly. Don’t just sip water, treat dry mouth symptoms with #1 dentist and hygienist recommended Biotène®. EROSION 9 out of 10 dentists see signs of acid erosion. Do you or a family member love eating fruit or drinking soda? Don’t let those favorite foods soften tooth enamel. Acids in everyday foods – even the

healthiest ones – can erode tooth enamel. And, unfortunately, once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. Re-harden and protect tooth enamel from acid erosion by brushing for two minutes, twice a day with Sensodyne ProNamel®. DENTURE CONCERNS Are your dentures as clean as they can be? Using toothpaste, which contains abrasives, to clean dentures or partials can cause scratches in which odor-causing bacteria can grow. Avoid scratching dentures and help prevent bad breath with proper oral denture care. When used as directed, soaking and brushing dentures daily with Polident® Microclean Formula will remove tough stains and kill 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria; plus other key microorganisms found on dentures. Adhesives help even when your dentures fit well. The #1 complaint among denture wearers is food trapped under their dentures. Even well-fitting dentures let in tiny crumbs, seeds and other bits of food that can cause discomfort and irritation. Create a seal between your dentures and gums with Super Poligrip®. This will help keep out food particles* and make any dentures more comfortable. TOOTH DECAY Did you know that 215 million hours of work and school are lost each year due to tooth decay? Teeth need to be cared for like any other part of your body. With simple measures like brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for 2 minutes, this statistic could be dramatically reduced. Teeth absorb ingredients from your toothpaste every time you brush. Deliver fluoride to provide lasting enamel protection between brushing with Aquafresh® toothpaste. And it’s easy to brush the front and back of teeth, but what about the surface between teeth? Surround the whole tooth with the active fluoride formula of Aquafresh iso-active®. It fights cavities front, back and in-between. (*vs. no adhesive)

Diabetes: A Disease on the Rise

Q&A

by Michele Goodman

New evidence shows that nearly 21 million people in the States have diabetes and as many as 54 million have prediabetes. This places almost 25% of the population at risk for further complications and suffering. Furthermore, nearly 6.2 million people have no idea they have the disease. The facts continue to stagger: in the year 2000 there were 171 million people worldwide with diabetes, this figure is predicted to rise to 366 million in 2030, which is more than double. 62

• Type 1 Diabetes:

• It is a disease that changes the way your body uses food. The food you eat turns to sugar. The sugar then travels through the blood to all parts of the body. Normally, insulin helps get sugar from the blood to the body's cells, where it is used for energy. • When you have diabetes, your body has trouble making and/or using insulin. So your body does not get the fuel it needs. And your blood sugar stays too high. Insulin helps change sugar into energy to keep you alive.

Is there a cure for diabetes? • There is no cure for the disease, and the resulting health complications from poorly controlled diabetes are what make it so frightening. • Consistently high blood sugar levels can, over time, lead to blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, limb amputations, and nerve damage. • In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults between the ages of 20 and 74, and it accounts for 40 percent of people who have kidney failure. • Cardiovascular disease is 2 to 4 times more common among people with diabetes, and is the leading cause of diabetes-related deaths. The risk of stroke is also 2 to 4 times higher in people with diabetes, and 60 percent to 65 percent have high blood pressure.

What is the connection between women and diabetes? • Women with diabetes are more likely to have a heart attack and have it at a younger age. • Some women get diabetes when they are pregnant. • Women who have diabetes are more likely to have a miscarriage or a baby with birth defects. • Women with diabetes, according to recent studies are more likely to be poor, which makes it harder to manage the disease. • Most people with diabetes die from heart attack or stroke.

What are the types of diabetes?

NEW!

In this type, the body does not make any insulin. People with type 1 must take insulin every day to stay alive. Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed mostly in children and teenagers • Type 2 Diabetes: The body does not make enough insulin, or use insulin well. Type 2 accounts for over 90 percent of the cases, and is usually found in older and overweight adults. It is usually found in people over 45, who have diabetes in their family, who are overweight, who don’t exercise, and who have cholesterol problems. It is also common in certain racial and ethnic groups (blacks, American Indians, and Hispanics) and in women who had diabetes when they were pregnant. Treatment is diabetes pills and sometimes insulin injections, as well as diet and exercise. Together the two types of diabetes contribute to about 200,000 deaths a year. Diabetes is also the leading cause of end-stage renal disease, blindness in adults, and lower-limb amputations.

Most people with diabetes do not notice the warning signs of diabetes. • Going to the bathroom a lot • Feeling hungry or thirsty all the time • Blurred vision • Losing weight without trying • Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal • Feeling tired all the time • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet

Are you at risk for diabetes? • Do you need to lose weight? • Do you get little or no exercise? • Do you have high blood pressure (130/80 or higher)? • Do you have a brother or sister with diabetes? • Do you have a parent with diabetes? • Are you a woman who had it when you were pregnant. OR have you had a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds at birth?

What is diabetes?

• Are you African American, Native American, Hispanic, or Asian American/Pacific Islander? If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist if you need a diabetes test.

(“A-one-see”) blood test. It measures blood sugar levels over 2 to 3 months. Talk to your health care team about your ABC’s: • A-1-C

A Disease on the Rise

• Blood pressure

Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common in children and teenagers, but it primarily affects non-white Americans who are older and overweight. Hispanics, blacks and American Indians are almost twice as likely to have diabetes as nonHispanic whites of the same age. Because these and other diabetes-prone minorities are among the fastest growing segments of the United States population, and because Americans are increasingly overweight and sedentary, the incidence of diabetes in the United States is expected to rise to nearly 9 percent of the population by 2025. If you have diabetes, you should:

• Cholesterol

1. Watch What You Eat and Get Exercise There is no set diet for people with diabetes. You should work with your health care team to come up with a plan for you so you can eat the foods you love by watching serving sizes. The “Nutrition Facts” label on foods can help, but note that many packaged foods contain more than one serving. Carbohydrates raise your blood sugar the most, so make sure you cut back on these. Keep active! Exercise at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week. Exercise helps your body’s insulin work better and also lowers your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. 2. Use Medicines Wisely Sometimes people with diabetes need to take pills or insulin shots. Be sure to follow the directions and ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist what your medicines do. Also ask when to take them and if they have any side effects. 3. Check Your Blood Sugar and Know Your ABC's Help prevent heart disease and stroke by keeping your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol under control. Check your blood sugar using a meter (home testing kit). This tells what your blood sugar is so you can make wise choices. Ask your doctor for an A-1-C

4. Pay Attention to Low Blood Sugar and Know how to React People with diabetes may develop low blood sugar because their blood has too much insulin or other blood sugar-lowering medication or from not eating enough food. It is important to follow the eating and medication schedule your doctor has prescribed to avoid low blood sugar. Low blood sugar could make you shaky, dizzy, sweaty, hungry, have a headache, have pale skin color, have sudden mood or behavior changes, have clumsy or jerky movements, have difficulty paying attention, feel confused, or have tingling sensations around the mouth. The best way to take care of your diabetes is to make sure the levels or amount of sugar in your blood are near the normal range. This will make you feel better and help you stay healthy. Your doctor will tell you how often to check your blood sugar level. To do this, you will need to take a drop of your blood and place it on a special test strip. Then a device, called a blood glucose meter, reads the strip. This device measures the amount of sugar in your blood. Writing down this level, along with the time and date, will help you see how well your treatment plan is working. Remember: A person’s blood sugar level rises after eating any meal that contains carbohydrates or protein. Table sugar (also called sucrose) counts as a carbohydrate. Artificial sweeteners, such as saccharin, aspartame (NutraSweet), and sucralose (Splenda), do not count as carbohydrates or fats. They make food taste sweet. But they do not raise blood sugar levels and have little or no calories.

Lower Your Blood Pressure High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a serious illness that affects nearly 65 million adults in the United States. High blood pressure is often called a “silent killer” because many people have it but don’t know it. Over time, people who do not get treated for high blood pressure can get very sick or even die.

What does high blood pressure do to your body? High blood pressure can cause life-threatening illnesses like kidney problems, stroke, heart failure, blindness, and heart attacks.

• Drink alcohol heavily.

What are the signs of high blood pressure?

Who is at risk?

Many people with high blood pressure do not feel sick at first. The only way to know for sure is to get your blood pressure checked by a doctor or other health professional.

Anyone can have high blood pressure. Some people are more likely to have high blood pressure including:

Understanding your blood pressure: What do the numbers mean?

• African Americans. • People over age 55. • People with a family history of blood pressure.

Your chances of having high blood pressure are higher if you: • Are overweight. • Eat foods high in salt. • Do not get regular exercise. • Smoke.

68

• If your blood pressure is often greater than 140/90, you may need treatment. • When you have your blood pressure taken by your doctor, you are told two numbers, such as 120/80. Both numbers are important. • The first number is your pressure when your heart beats (systolic pressure). • The second number is your pressure when your heart relaxes (diastolic pressure). • Your blood pressure goes up and down during the day, depending on what you are doing. Brief rises in blood pressure are normal, but the higher your

blood pressure stays, the more at risk you are. • If your blood pressure is greater than 120/80, and you have other risk factors, such as diabetes, you may need treatment.

How is high blood pressure treated? There are medicines people can take every day to control their high blood pressure. Only your doctor can tell if you need to take medicines.

How does high blood pressure affect pregnant women? A few women will get high blood pressure when they are pregnant. When pregnant women get high blood pressure, it is called preeclampsia or toxemia.

How do I control my high blood pressure? • Check your blood pressure. • Take your high blood pressure medicine every day if needed. • Exercise often.

Salma Hayek 72

NAME: Salma Hayek OCCUPATION: Actor, director, producer, spokesmodel, businesswoman, wife and mother BIRTH DATE: September 02, 1966 (Age: 45) PLACE OF BIRTH: Coatzacoalcos, Mexico ZODIAC SIGN: Virgo

Noted for her acting career, Hayek has also dedicated much of
her time to social activism.

Height: 5' 2" Weight: Perfect!

Born in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, Salma Hayek was raised by her mother who was an opera singer and her father, a successful businessman. While attending college in Mexico City Salma decided to follow her childhood dream of becoming an actress. Academy Award Nominee Salma Hayek has proven herself as a prolific actress, producer, and director, in both film and television. She has received an Academy Award Nomination, a Golden Globe Nomination, a SAG Nomination, and a BAFTA Nomination for Best Actress for the title role in Julie Taymor's Frida. Salma began her acting career in the theater with lead roles in productions like "Aladdin and His Marvelous Lamp," which then led to commercials. Quickly emerging as a soap opera star in Mexico, Salma then set her sights on becoming a global Hollywood actress. She moved to Los Angeles in 1991, began studying acting with drama teacher Stella Adler, and spent the next 18 months taking English lessons. Her break would come when she was caste opposite Antonio Banderas in the 1995 film, "Desperado," directed by Robert Rodriguez. Salma’s film work would follow with roles in films such as "Fair Game," "Fled," "Dusk til Dawn," "Fools Rush In," "54," "The Faculty," "Wild Wild West," "Dogma," "Timecode," "Chain of Fools" and "Traffic." Subsequently, Hayek became engaged with smaller, independent pictures and started her own production company, Ventanarosa. Hayek’s increasingly intellectual and passionate approach to filmmaking culminated in her dream role in 2002 with "Frida," in which she both produced and starred. The project garnered her Golden Globe, Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Satellite nominations for best actress, as well as Germany’s Golden Camera for Best International Actress. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including a Best Actress nomination for Hayek, who was the first Latin actress to be nominated in the category. Large-scale projects followed the success of "Frida," including directing 2002’s, "The Maldonado Miracle," starring in the final episode of the "Desperado" trilogy, "Once Upon a Time in Mexico," and appearing in the heist thriller "After The Sunset" with Pierce Brosnan. Salma Hayek went on to become executive producer of the vastly popular hit television series, "Ugly Betty," which was based on the Colombian telenovela, "Yo Soy Betty La Fea." The show premiered on ABC in September 2006 and won a Golden Globe for Best Comedy in 2007.

NEW!

Demonstrating her comedic skills, Hayek made a series of guest appearances on the popular sitcom, "30 Rock" in 2009. She played a nurse who becomes romantically involved with a television network executive played by Alec Baldwin. In 2010, Salma appeared opposite Adam Sandler in the movie comedy, "Grown Ups." Most recently, she lent her voice to Academy Award nominated "Puss In Boots," a prequel of sorts to "Shrek 2" as Antonio Banderas’ love interest, “Kitty Soft Paws.” She also has two upcoming films scheduled for release this year In September she will star in Oliver Stone’s "Savages," opposite John Travolta, Benecio del Toro and Blake Lively. She will also be seen in "Here Comes the Boom," opposite Kevin James, which will be released in October 2012. Noted for her acting career, Hayek has also dedicated much of
her time to social activism. Hayek served as spokesperson for the Pampers/UNICEF partnership worldwide to help stop the spread of life-threatening maternal and neonatal tetanus. She serves as the spokesperson for the Avon Foundation's Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program, which focuses on domestic violence education, awareness and prevention, as well as support for victims. Hayek has continued to support this cause, speaking in front of the U.S. Senate encouraging its members to extend the Violence Against Women Act. In January 2006, the legislation was passed, ensuring that $3.9 billion will be allocated to thousands of domestic violence crisis and intervention agencies throughout the U.S. Hayek also participates in the One campaign that singer and activist Bono created, as well as a member of Global Green and Youth Aids. Salma Hayek was heavily influenced by the women in her family, in particular her grandmother. Hayek's grandmother had an incredible impact on her upbringing and remains an inspiration to her today. A trained cosmetologist, her grandmother passed along beauty traditions and secrets to Hayek, inspiring her to continue to seek out the best, most effective beauty solutions around the world. In August 2011 Hayek launched the NUANCE Salma Hayek collection with a desire to honor her grandmother and share her beauty secrets with all women. It is the first complete beauty line developed by an actress in partnership with a national retailer. Weekend Revival

First, Make It Happen Start by planning for your personal rejuvenation weekend by making provisions for the things you normally tend to. Decide on the two days you’re going to set aside, then work towards making them happen. Don’t make any appointments or accept invitations for those days. Clear your desk at the office or your calendar at home to allow for this time off. Look to friends and family to help you clear your schedule, care for your kids and pets and support you in treating yourself. Now is a good time for dad to take the kids for a weekend away— maybe grandma and grandpa could use some company?

Stock Up For Your Time Out Pick up a beginner’s yoga or stretching DVD and a naturesounds CD or download. Head to the grocery store and grab some good-for-you foods your body’s been craving that perhaps you haven’t had time to prepare. Fresh fruits and veggies are a great basis for good meals, desserts and “smart” snacks. Lean chicken, fish and wholesome cheese round out your weekend menu.

Once you’re fully awake, swing your legs over the side of the bed and clasp your hands together in front of you. Raise your arms over your head and stretch, gently pulling up on one arm, then the other. Next, grasp hands behind your lower back and raise arms slowly until you feel the stretch. Now standing, raise one arm up and over your head, pulling gently up from the waist. Repeat on the other side. Drop arms before you and do your best to touch your toes. Time to hit the bath. This tub-time is meant to invigorate and revive. Run a warm— not hot—bath and add bath salts with fragrance, such as citrus, ginger or green tea, to get your senses started. Towel off and moisturize, paying special attention to rough spots like elbows, knees and ankles. A light, healthy breakfast will jumpstart your system. Why not mix up a tasty smoothie? Blend together your favorite fruits, like bananas, strawberries, blueberries or melon with some protein-rich soymilk and a few cubes of ice. Get your daily fiber with some wheat toast or bran flakes cereal. Don’t forget to take your daily vitamin supplements to ensure proper nutrition.

Friday Evening

Saturday Afternoon

First, clear your mind of all the daily tasks you inevitably have to do. Make a list and then set it aside—you’ll get back to it on Monday.

Remember those videos you picked up a while back? Get into your workout gear—comfy, not baggy, clothing and supportive workout shoes. Yoga may be just the thing. Besides being a great strengthening workout, yoga is based on principles of reconnecting the body and mind. Breathing, control, concentration and self-awareness are key components. Sounds pretty good, no?

Now, onto dinner. Tonight, it’s all about comfort food—the dishes you love but tend to steer clear of, due either to dietary concerns or time constraints. This time, however, you’re going to indulge in a comfort food that not only feels indulgent but does your body good as well. Try a soothing baked potato, topped with fat-free sour cream, chives and shredded cheese. Potatoes are not only a filling familiar food, but have been shown to enhance sleep and well-being due to the release of serotonin. Set a place at the table for yourself, light a candle and enjoy the solace of your quiet, indulgent, solitary meal.

Friday Night It’s a great time for a steamy shower. Bring along a loofah or body brush to exfoliate dead, dry skin and increase circulation. Slather on a rich body cream and wrap up in your snuggly bathrobe. Tuck moisturized feet into slippers. Reach for a small glass of heart-healthy red wine and curl up on the sofa with that novel you’ve been meaning to crack open. Don’t wait until you need toothpicks to keep your eyes open. Chances are, it’s not often you can enjoy quiet, uninterrupted sleep with no alarm clock (or kids!) to answer to. So make the most of it. Sprinkle your sheets with a light lavender pillow spray, a scent prized for its sleep-promoting properties. Pop a sounds-of-nature CD into the player or download to your iPod and be lulled to sleep with the sounds of a waterfall, the ocean, wind or rain. Sweet dreams.

Saturday Morning Sleep until you wake naturally to get the most out of your night’s slumber. Try to remember that you don’t need to be anywhere or doing anything so as not to jar yourself to wakefulness. Open the shades in your room to allow in the daylight, then tuck back under the covers for a few more minutes.

76

Next, how about calling up an old friend you’d be meaning to touch base with? Maybe put together an email newsletter about the things happening in your life. Send to friends you haven’t been in touch with lately and encourage them to do the same. Ask to plan a time in the near future to get together—and really make it happen. Sharing experiences with caring friends makes you feel loved and supported. Don’t underestimate the importance of reaching out. You’ll not only feel better, you’ll make someone else feel good too. Enjoy a freshly prepared lunch, like tuna salad over greens. Don’t gulp down your food in front of the television or absentmindedly while reading a book. Take the time to taste and appreciate your meal; you’re less likely to overeat if you’re paying attention to each bite.

Saturday Evening Time to get some fresh air—lace up those sneakers and hit the neighborhood for a heart-pumping power walk. The benefits of exercise are undisputed—both physical and emotional. Don’t use this time to mull over problems or impending work, keep focused on you. Appreciate your surroundings—cliché as it is, take time to smell the roses. And listen to the birds and feel your muscles and heart beat. Be in the moment and revel in it. Back at home and cooling down: Has it been a while since you’ve had the time to think about your hands and nails? Start by filing nails into the desired shape and length. Then soak hands in warm, sudsy water. Pat dry and apply cuticle

oil to each nail, massaging into cuticles. Next, gently push back cuticles with a clean orange stick. Avoid scratching the nail plate or jabbing at the cuticles. Wash hands with antibacterial cleanser and apply a rich hand lotion. Pop hands into cotton gloves to generate heat and help the moisture penetrate skin. Begin preparations for tonight’s dinner—marinating a chicken breast, chopping veggies, etc. After about 20 minutes, remove the gloves and massage any remaining cream into hands. Use a cotton ball soaked in nail-polish remover to get rid of lotion residue on nails, then polish in your favorite color. As nails dry, pick up that novel or put on some classical music and just relax. After dinner, try out a meditation DVD or podcast to help you learn the basics of cleansing your spirit and mind.

Saturday Night Write a letter to your significant other, spouse or child. Let him or her know how much you care. Share your appreciation for your weekend alone and promise to plan a special activity for the two of you.

ing your fingers from the top of the toes, slide your hand slightly closer to the arch and repeat the side-to-side massage. Continue until you have massaged the area under the instep. 5) For toes, rub each between fingers and thumb, pulling up gently, then press the flesh between the toes. 6) For heel and ankle, support the heel with your cupped hand and move your thumb in a circular motion around the heel pad, applying increasing pressure. 7) Finish by pinching behind the ankle several times. Run your fingers along the top of the foot, then stroke the entire area from foot to knee. Repeat, more gently each time, until done. Sit down to a healthy dinner, don’t forget to have a little guilty pleasure for dessert—it’s the last meal of your weekend sojourn.

Now it’s back to bed. Sleep tight.

Sunday Morning Cook up a yummy, healthy egg-white omelet, packed with flavorful veggies like peppers, onions and broccoli. Stay in your PJs later than you should.

Sunday Afternoon Rent that emotional chick-flick you’ve wanted to see—but no one else would watch with you. Laugh, cry and cry some more. It’s good to unleash these emotions.

Sunday Afternoon Cuddle up with that book or finish off another rented movie. Your all-about-you weekend is almost over. A good night’s rest and you’re back to the real world—refreshed, more relaxed and ready to tackle whatever comes your way!

Sunday Evening Give yourself a foot massage. Here are some do-it-yourself tips from Spafinder.com: 1) Start with a foot soak in warm water mixed with ordinary table salt. Use a pan or a bubbling foot spa and keep the feet immersed for 15 to 20 minutes. Then dry them thoroughly. 2) Apply cream to your hands, rubbing them together briskly to warm them. (Don’t use oil: when hands get slippery, applying pressure is difficult.) 3) Hint: When you work on one foot at a time, keep the other warm by draping it with a towel. For a calf massage, place your hand under the knee, squeeze gently on the calf, then slide hand down to the ankle, squeezing five times along the way. Repeat the action on the front of the leg from knee to shin. Repeat, increasing pressure. 4) For the foot pad and arch, place fingers lightly across top of toes, thumb against the sole. Use your thumb to press in a circular motion. Continue the circular motion as your hand moves across the foot in a horizontal path. Remov-

Managing Your 401-k T

hese are turbulent times for the finance industry, and your 401-k is probably the first thing on your mind, especially if you’re planning on retiring in a few years. It’s natural to be flustered and worried, but taking your 401-k out at this point really isn’t the smartest strategy.

As of October 2011, Congress’ top budget analyst estimated that Americans’ retirement plans had shaved off $2 trillion over the past year. Ouch! Here’s what the experts are saying: • Historically, the stock market doesn’t really stay down for more than two years, so if you have a couple more years left till you retire, either decide to rebalance your portfolio, or let it be. • How does one rebalance a portfolio? There are several ways. One of them is by taking some money out of bonds and putting them into beaten down stocks. You should ask your financial advisor what is best for you.

Should you stop contributing to your 401-k now? Absolutely not. But it certainly is a time to think about rebalancing your portfolio. Many pundits proclaim the worst of the market worries is yet to come. Does that make you feel panicked? It should! However, selling all your stocks right now is the worst possible decision. Think about realigning your portfolio and taking money out of the money market funds and putting it into treasuries or bonds if you are risk averse. This is particularly necessary if retirement is only a few years away for you. The Way To Win is to Buy Cheap Time will tell you, again and again, that the winners buy cheap stocks, and particularly at the times when the market is panicking. This means that the pros are buying now. So, if you have a lot of bond funds, you may want to consider moving a portion of your bond money into stocks. Free Money = Smart Money

• If you have investments in money market funds right now, you may want to consider rebalancing your portfolio by taking the money out (money market funds are likely to get weaker) and putting them into individual stocks or go all cash.

Is there such a thing called free money? Yes. This is called the employer’s matching program in your 401-k portfolio. You should take advantage of it, now more than ever. So why would you even consider stopping your 401-k contributions?

• Remember that if all hell is breaking loose, it’s too late to cash out of your stocks. You should have done this before the panic. If you’re still holding onto your 401-k portfolio, let it be.

Also, there is a tax deduction component (all your 401-k contributions are pre tax). So, say you contribute $200 and your boss contributes 50% of that, you get $100 in free money. Your $200 really means that you’re giving away $150 net (because of the tax deductions), so you literally got $150 in free money.

• However, not a bad idea to change your investment strategy going forward. Remember to let your previous bad investments be… they will recover in the future. • If you are completely risk averse now and skeptical of recovery any time soon, then consider moving your portfolio into treasury funds. These funds don’t return too much, but they are safe, considering they are government investments. So you’re not going to get 10-20% return any time soon, but you won’t suffer any losses either.

Now is the Time to Rescue Your 401-k, not Flee From It

The Bottom Dollar? If you’re retiring soon, you need to be as conservative as possible in your allocations. There’s no telling when the worst of the market is over. However, if there are only paper losses and you’re young, stick with it! Stay the course, most of your investments are likely to recover. If you dump your stocks now, you’re doing it too late. If the market starts to turn around, you’ll wish you had not sold.

Simple Steps to Love Your Life Being happy takes practice, but the results are well worth the effort! So, what really makes you happy? Mounting obligations and hectic schedules can make it all too easy to lose track. But whether it’s the little things in life that make you smile, or the joy of working toward a larger goal, focusing on your happiness each day can help protect your emotional well-being and your physical health. Follow these simple steps to rediscover your passion for life.

• Value Your Daily Diversions When you’re adding items to your to-do list, don’t forget the good stuff. If you look forward to reading in bed, going out to breakfast, taking long walks, listening to music, or just sitting quietly outside, make time for at least one of your favorite diversions every day. Consider crossing out pesky items on your list that you keep saying you’re going to do but haven’t gotten to in over a year, like alphabetizing your bills or organizing your sock drawer. Or get rid of a time-consuming chore that isn’t enhancing your life one bit.

• Build Your Strength and Independence We all have low-energy days, but if you can resist the urge to skip your daily workout when you’re feeling low, you’ll be rewarded both now and later. Try this trick: Tell yourself that you need to do only 10 minutes of exercise. Once you’re up and moving (and feeling better) you’ll most likely want to finish your workout. Even if you can’t push past the 10-minute mark on the occasional bad day, you’ll feel good about doing at least a little something. Sticking with an exercise plan helps you feel good about yourself, strengthens your immune system, and enhances production of mood-boosting hormones.

through your nose and then exhaling slowly through your mouth. Repeating this action three or four times allows more oxygen to get into your bloodstream, creating a feeling of calm. Progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, and meditation also are effective ways of reducing tension, stress, depression, and anxiety. And a brisk 10-minute walk will do far more to dissipate your stress and lift your spirits than eating the bad-for-you snacks you might crave when feeling frantic.

• Celebrate and Share Your Skills Volunteer at a local school, club, or community organization. Not only will sharing your unique talents and expertise benefit others, but research shows that volunteering can make you happier and improve your well-being, too. Feeling engaged and involved in your local community is good for your emotional health. It’s also an opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. Win-win.

• Appreciate the People Around You Unwind and share a few laughs with your family or friends at least once or twice each month. The openness and trust you share with the important people in your life can help give you the perspective you need to cope with everyday challenges. These regular connections will also have a positive impact on your health, especially when you share a good laugh. Laughing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, and releases endorphins that can ease pain. Also, don’t neglect relationships at work. Colleagues and coworkers can provide valuable support and keep your blood pressure under control during stressful situations. Feeling satisfied and fulfilled with your life is an essential part of your emotional and physical well-being. As you grow to appreciate your time, independence, self-assurance, skills, and relationships, you will be amazed at just how good you feel, both in body and in spirit.

• Squash Your Stressors Defuse daily hassles by practicing stress-reduction strategies. Try taking deep-breathing breaks throughout the day, inhaling
