HOLIDAY STYLE FORECAST: COLORFUL CHIC WITH A tCHANCE OF CASUAL This holiday season, don’t be afraid to add some pizazz to your little black dress and aim for pops of color. Holiday outfits don’t necessarily have to be super glam. In fact, this season is all about a comfortable, casual chic with a side of sparkly. Think: long, flowing dresses that you’d wear to office parties, paired with beautiful bracelets or an unexpected hair accessory. Think: velvet pants and a cashmere tee, perhaps perfectly finished and polished with a blazer. There are many ways to get inspired; if you want to channel your inner preppie (or perhaps you’ve been watching too many episodes of Glee), then go for striped, soft tee shirts or collared shirts with fun, flirty skirts. If you’re more into retro (and who isn’t these days?) and have been over-the-moon-inspired by Man Men, opt for knee-length dresses and barely-there accessories. The Fall/Winter Fashion Week runway showed that holiday veered more in the direction of the non-traditional solid colors. That doesn’t mean your basic little black dress is out of the picture, it just means that it could use some colorful and creative pairings like purple scarves and hats.
Be a Color Block Gal Color blocking, as you may have noticed is IN. Dresses, blouses, tees and even leggings are becoming more color blocked. This means that if you’ve always loved pops of color and disliked the basic black anything, this is your season. Try your hand at wearing color-blocked knee-length dresses and refrain from adding too many accessories because the shades themselves will be the spotlight.

2012 Wear Bright Leggings or Jeans
Shades of Gray Opt for a look wearing various shades of gray. Not only can you reference the popular best-selling book trilogy, "Fifty Shades" during cocktail parties but you will also look extremely distinguished wearing layers of this chic and iconic shade. Gray may well be the new black, and it pairs well with cream blouses, black boots, and chunky accessories. If you must accent your look with pops of color, go for understated accessories, like amethyst earrings or a pale peridot bracelet. Remember: understated elegance is sexy!

This applies to the entire outfit: from skirt to shoe. In order to rock the look this season, follow these simple steps: Get a few solid, dark colored outfits with a few accents that stand out –like flowers, a jeweled neckline, or a collar that’s edgy and metallic. If your dress is sparkly choose your accessories wisely. A few tasteful, outstanding ones that shine will make of an impact. Invest in solid colored shoes (not shiny or sparkly) because you want to balance your outfit. Kiera Knightley At the “Seeking a Friend For the End of the World” Los Angeles Premier, actress Kiera Knightley wore a shiny taupe tulle gown made by Valentino, full of colorful floral details. To give her hair do and look an ancient Greek feel, she wore a red leaf hair band like accessory. While we’re not advocating that you dress up like a garden, note the use of shine in this ensemble: the tulle has elements of shine to it that’s classy without being overly done. Angelina Jolie Angelina at the Daily Beast and Newsweek’s Women at the World Summit wore a glossy white blouse and a white blazer embellished with a super-shiny clasp for a perfect and elegant outing. Beautiful! Don’t rule out white for your holiday season.

The Zagat guide called her “The Hostess with the Mostest.” Reinventing Beauty™ caught up with Donatella Arpaia to get some of her entertaining strategies. “I find an evening-long cocktail party is the most modern way to entertain,” said Donatella. “It is partly a reflection of the small-plate trend on restaurant menus and also a matter of practicality.”
“Many who are new to entertaining don’t have the gear or the real estate to seat more than eight people comfortably. For an evening-long cocktail party, a mix of light and substantial hors d’oeuvres is a must, as is a tantalizing spread of hors d’oeuvre-size desserts from your favorite bakery.” We asked Donatella to share with us the recipes of some of her favorite hors d’oeuvres.

Entertaining Do-It-Yourself Crafts
Greek Pizzette I’ll be honest with you, unless I have a party coming up, my refrigerator isn’t exactly overflowing. Maybe you can relate? This is partly because I’m always at the restaurants, and I tend to wind up eating whatever the chefs can toss together while they’re closing the kitchen. One night, with barely any effort, Michael Psilakis did what comes so naturally to him: He tapped into his Greek culinary roots and took off from there. These little pizzas are, honestly, to die for. SERVES 4 4 pocketless pitas 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup fig jam 1/2 pound halloumi cheese, cut into 1/4” slices 2 cups baby arugula Juice of 1 lemon 2 teaspoons dried oregano Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 fresh figs, halved lengthwise preheat the oven to 350°f. Brush both sides of the pitas with 1/4 cup of the olive oil and place on a baking sheet. Bake about 10 minutes, until golden and crisp. Let cool slightly. Meanwhile, turn on the broiler and set the rack 6” from the heat source. Spread the pitas with the fig jam, then top each with some halloumi. Slide the pitas under the broiler for about 3 minutes, until the halloumi is melted. Put the arugula in a large bowl, add the lemon juice and remaining 1/4 cup olive oil, and toss to thoroughly coat all of the leaves. Season with the oregano, salt, and pepper. Divide the arugula among the pitas. Top each with two fig halves. Arrange on a platter, and serve.

Zucchini Fritters One bite and I’m taken back to my Long Island grade school, where I was the only student with immigrant parents. I went by Donna in an attempt to assimilate, but instead of packing a PBJ in a Farrah Fawcett lunch box, my mother sent me off with foil-wrapped fritters stuffed into a brown paper bag. Despite the fact that I whined for a more mainstream lunch, I secretly loved these. Today, I beg my mother to make them. Hers are without question the best, but mine are a pretty close second. She never grates the zucchini (which I am always tempted to do because it’s quicker--alas, results in a watery batter), but rather cuts the zucchini into almost confetti-like pieces. The tinier the zucchini pieces, the better. Use a food processor with the fine-dice attachment for the best results, or cut by hand the way my mom does it. SERVES 4 TO 6 4 medium zucchini, finely diced 2 eggs, lightly beaten 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley 1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 3/4-1 cup all-purpose flour Olive oil Combine the zucchini, eggs, parsley, Parmigiano, and extra-virgin olive oil and stir until the zucchini is coated. Season generously with salt and pepper. Add 3/4 cup of the flour just a sprinkle at a time and stir. Continue adding until the mix is the consistency of pancake batter, add more if the zucchini is very wet. Fill a large, heavy-bottomed pan with 1/4” olive oil. Heat over medium heat until hot but not smoking. Working in batches, spoon the zucchini mixture into the pan in 2-tablespoon mounds. The fritters should be three-quarters submerged in the oil. If bits of zucchini stray, scoop them up and return them to the fritters. Reduce the heat slightly and fry until golden brown, turning once, about 5 minutes per side. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Allow the oil to return to medium heat before proceeding with the next batch. Serve the fritters on a parchment-lined tray. The leftover fritters will keep, covered and refrigerated, up to 2 days. Reheat, wrapped in foil, in a low oven.

If you’re not already BFFs with the guy or girl behind the cheese counter, this dish should be the start of a lifelong friendship. I say this because it’s essential that you use high-quality fresh ricotta (preferably buffalo ricotta; if you can’t get it, go for sheep’s milk ricotta)-not the kind you get in a tub at the supermarket. It’s the principal ingredient in this dish, so it has to be the best. I first tasted buffalo ricotta in Naples, on a visit to Rita De Rosa, a well-known Neapolitan cook. I loved that she baked the ricotta in humble foil--and each time she made it she put different ingredients in the packet. Tomatoes, olives, fresh oregano, basil--whatever she had on hand was fair game. To this day, I make it in foil and serve it that way, too, to raves. SERVES 4 TO 6 Extra-virgin olive oil 8 ounces fresh buffalo or sheep’s milk ricotta 4-5 cherry tomatoes, halved lengthwise Fresh oregano leaves Fleur de sel and freshly ground black pepper 8-12 slices rustic Italian bread preheat the oven to 450°f. Drizzle a bit of olive oil onto the center of an 8” x 11” sheet of foil and spread it all over with your fingers. Spoon the ricotta onto the center, spreading it into a small square. Arrange the cherry tomatoes on top, followed by the oregano. Season with the salt and pepper. Oil a second 8” x 11” sheet of foil and place over the ricotta. Fold the foil into a packet, leaving about a 1/4” border around the cheese. Remember, you’ll be serving directly from the packet, so neatness counts. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until piping hot throughout. Meanwhile, using tongs, “grill” the bread slices on both sides over a gas flame or by placing the bread directly on the coils of an electric burner, taking care not to let them char. To serve, use the tip of a knife to cut an “X” into the top of the packet and fold back the points to reveal the cheese. Place on a wooden cutting board and serve with the grilled bread.

Italians don’t really go for fruit in savory dishes, preferring to eat it fresh and whole after the evening meal. Though this combination of tiny balls of mozzarella and peaches may never have shown up on one of my Puglian aunts’ tables, I can just hear them saying “Ahhhhh, l’Americana,” and know they would come to love it although they wouldn’t admit it. Fresh peaches are a must; if they’re not ripe they obviously won’t taste good and they won’t come loose from the pit easily. Store any leftover bocconcini in the container you purchased them in, covered in water. I’ve made this salad on the fly without grilling the peaches and it is still very good. SERVES 4 TO 6 4 ripe peaches, halved, pitted, and each half cut into 3 wedges 1 pound bocconcini, packed in water 20 small basil leaves plus more for garnish 2 medium shallots, finely chopped 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Brush a cast-iron stovetop grill pan with a little olive oil and heat over high heat. Grill the peach wedges about 2 to 3 minutes per side, until nicely charred. Transfer them to a large bowl and add the bocconcini, basil, shallots, olive oil, and vinegar. Toss gently until everything is well coated. Season with salt and pepper and set aside at room temperature for 15 minutes. Divide among salad plates or transfer to a rimmed platter. Garnish with the basil leaves and serve.

Bocconcini with Peaches
Donatella Tip: Olive Etiquette One of my biggest party pet peeves is the olive bowl aftermath. If you’ve ever walked around a party clutching a napkin full of pits and toothpicks, you know what I’m talking about. I’m a stickler for serving olives on the pit (otherwise they tend to be mushy) and just as serious about providing an obvious place to discard those pits. If you don’t want to be the pit police, set out a small, cute bowl near the olives – and put a few pits in it as a guide. Restaurant Inside Tip: Speed Rack Take a tip from your favorite bartender and set up a speed rack. Shop-Hop. Big ticket items, such as meats, can be kept in the freezer and then defrosted later.
6. Switch it Up. Planning your meals based on super sleuthing doesn’t mean you have to eat the same thing for dinner every night. Delicious chicken breasts from one night can be chopped up over a Caesar salad on another. Less expensive items such as rice and pastas are often sold in large quantities and can be mixed with proteins easily. In addition, casseroles are simple and easy to make for the entire family in a pinch. To make it kid-friendly, just sprinkle cheese on top! 7. Technology is Key. The Beauty of Wreaths The concept of wreath making may have Greek roots, stemming from the word “diadem” which means a thing “bound around.” The Romans made wreaths from olive trees to decorate their victors, and they were a sign of royalty, athletic ability or social standing. Wreath making today is associated more with holidays and festivities, and many makers have taking this concept to a high artistic level by adorning it with holiday ornaments, feathers, pine cones and paper doilies. People also use silk flowers and vines, but there is something intensely pleasurable by using fresh pine, although the efforts don’t last quite so long (it’s like receiving a bouquet of roses only to have them wither in a few days). So when you decide to make a wreath, you’ll need to decide what sort of base is right for you. Would you like long-lasting plastic foliage? Or do you want the real thing? In this guide, we’ve given you some suggestions of basic flora and fauna you can purchase. Once you’ve achieved the base, the rest is open to imagination. Take some old silk ties to festoon the wreath; use dried berries and holly; let your creativity take over and you’ll have a wreath to remember. Basic Materials Floral foam wreath: these are wreaths that hold water so that the flowers and foliage will last longer indoors. Sprinkle floral preservatives in the water to ensure that the leaves last longer.
Make a Holiday Wreath
Metal frames (round metal frames come in a variety of sizes). Basic pliers to cut foliage stems.
Wreaths and Variations Rose Wreath A rose wreath is simple to make. Cut pachysandra stems or another evergreen from the garden for the background and then buy an assortment of roses (all colors and sizes). Cut the pachysandra stems so that you have at least 4 inches to insert an inch or two into the middle of the foam ring. Once you’ve made a bed of greens with the pachysandra, then cut the roses and poke them in on top. Or, personalize your wreath adding any flowers that strike your fancy. You’ll be done in minutes and you now have a beautiful wreath you can set on the table around a pillar candle or hang on your door. The other wreaths are made using round metal frames which come in an assortment of sizes. The traditional way to decorate them is with bunches of evergreens each wired in place, overlapping the next bunch as you move around the frame. They are simple to make but unless you are using unique foliage it’s easier to purchase a readymade, plain wreath such as a Frasier fir and then customize it with conifers. This same technique works for other metal shapes, stars, trees and squares, as well. 1. The star wreath is made of boxwood sprigs (short clippings) wired together with rose hips (the fruit of the rose) then overlapped around the frame and wired on. If you use a paddle of floral wire it is easy to unwind it around the frame holding the groups of evergreens together as you move around.

You can also add white lilies and hydrangeas instead of the winter berries to get a more elegant variation. This wreath base will take you from Christmas to New Years Eve and you can simply add flowers and berries to change the mood.

Once you have found the basic materials (in this case, the floral foam wreath) the sky is the limit in terms of variations. Once you have the basic color and structure of the wreath handy, then you can add berries and other variations as the season permits. Let your creativity run wild and pick flowers that will last (you don’t want your efforts to last only a few days) and you’ll have a variety of highly elegant seasonal centerpieces to last you through the New Year.

Why it Matters It’s
not always fun to deal with, but urinary incontinence is—believe it or not—a way of life. Some men and women experience it throughout their life, and yet others deal with it well in their later years. But the good news is that there are plenty of ways to deal with incontinence, and treatments to improve and cure it altogether.
Symptoms of Incontinence
If you believe you suffer from this pesky situation, you should ideally discuss this with your urologist, who specialize in the urinary tract. Some urologists have a further field of specialization in the female urinary tract.
You experience incontinence when you lack the ability to control the release of urine from your bladder. Incontinence symptoms can be varied: some experience leaks in small drops or dribbles; yet others can wet their clothes. While this may seem like an excessively embarrassing situation, it’s important to realize that many people do not have control of their bladder muscles.
A Brief Overview Incontinence by definition refers to the involuntary loss of bladder or bowel control. Previously thought to be a normal part of aging, urinary incontinence (UI) is typically underreported and stigmatized as well, and an under-treated condition. Many women are embarrassed to talk about it because society thinks it is a normal part of aging, but healthy bladder function needs to be addressed and treated like any other illness or ailment today. Sometimes, incontinence is an indication of a greater, more serious health concern. UI affects a substantial number of people each year, around 200 million each year. In the United States, 25 million people are affected, and most of these (around 80%) are women. In the realm of the nursing homes or the elderly, incontinence affects an even greater majority of the population, or 53% of the homebound elderly. Stress incontinence (SI) is typically caused by some stress on the bladder muscles as a result of coughing, sneezing or laughing, and the majority of UI sufferers have stress incontinence.

Incontinence symptoms are unmistakable: the bladder muscles are typically weakened by some form of activity or the other, and result is typically fluid leakage. Urinary incontinence is so common that there are several treatments and solutions available to address the issue, so it should not be too disconcerting.
Also, women who go through strenuous child birth can have weakened bladder muscles as well. Post partum urinary incontinence is not uncommon, and women who had not previously experienced urine leaks while sneezing or coughing may find that they experience these symptoms. This mainly affects women who have delivered vaginally as opposed to delivering via cesarean. Also, researchers have discovered that an excessively long labor (i.e. many hours of pushing) or a large baby can result in incontinence. Solutions There are several ways to address incontinence: • Conservative treatments: These include pills like Detrol and Toviaz and are called anticholinergics. The way they work is by blocking the action of a chemical messenger, acetylcholine, that sends signals through the bladder to trigger the abnormal bladder contractions.

Many may prefer this option because it’s discrete and effective. The most common side effects of these drugs include dry mouth, and lower saliva production. This involves the insertion of five small vaginal cones of increasing weight. The patient places these cones inside her vagina, which in turn results in a pelvic floor muscle contraction (an automatic reflex action). Very little effort is actually required by the patient to acquire these set of reflex actions—the result is an involuntary strengthening of the pelvic floor

muscles over time. Professionals recommend ideally 15-20 minutes of exercise time per day. • Urinary catheters: A latex, polyurethane, or silicone tube known as a urinary catheter is inserted into a patient's bladder via the urethra. Catheterization allows the patient's urine to drain freely from the bladder for collection. The catheter may be permanent or an intermittent catheter removed after each catheterization. • Time voiding: This is a much more organized approach to Stress and Urinary Incontinence, and involves the patient keeping documents and charts for bladder training and retraining. First Steps to Address Incontinence If you believe you suffer from incontinence, the first step should be to schedule an appointment with a reputable urologist. After you schedule this meeting, explain the symptoms to your doctor, so he or she can look for the appropriate signs and triggers including possible causes from nerves. Then once your doctor has identified the issue, it’s time to address the situation and discuss what methods would suit the treatment options, whether it is medication or alternative methods. The good news is that incontinence has received much attention over the past few years and there are several solutions on the market available to address your needs. Perhaps the worst thing you could do is to ignore the issue altogether: remember, unlike the common cold or flu, incontinence does not always go away by itself, and proactive measures are generally your best and most prudent option.

What You Need to Know
D
iabetes is becoming synonymous with obesity. The disease is so prevalent in the United States that it is estimated around 25.8 million children and adults in the country have some form of diabetes. This means around 8.3% of the population diabetes, which is quite close to the number of people in the U.S. with heart disease (11.3%). This 25.8 million people does include a percentage of undiagnosed (estimated 7 million), but the American Diabetes Association says that there are around 79 million people who have pre-diabetes, which means they are very likely to get diabetes at some point in their lives. There are also 1.9 million new cases of diabetes diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older in 2010. And if you look at the population under the age of 20, the statistics aren’t exactly too rosy either: around 1 in every 400 children and adolescents has diabetes. In a nutshell, consider the facts*: Total prevalence of diabetes: 25.8 million children and adults in the United States—8.3% of the population. Diagnosed: 18.8 million people Undiagnosed: 7.0 million people Pre-diabetes: 79 million people* New Cases: 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older in 2010.

Age 20 years or older: 25.6 million, or 11.3% of all people in this age group have diabetes Age 65 years or older: 10.9 million, or 26.9% of all people in this age group have diabetes Men: 13.0 million, or 11.8% of all men aged 20 years or older have diabetes Women: 12.6 million, or 10.8% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes Race and Ethnicity There have been several links to race and ethnicity and the prevalence of diabetes. The population in most danger of developing this disease is the non-Hispanic black population, followed by Hispanics, Asian Americans, and then non-Hispanic white population. These statistics should raise extreme concern among heath officials. After adjusting for population age differences, 2007-2009 national survey data for people diagnosed with diabetes, aged 20 years or older include the following prevalence by race/ ethnicity:

image/canstockphoto Type 1 diabetes is also called juvenile diabetes, and several young children suffer from this. This means that your pancreas shuts down and stops producing insulin and you need to give yourself insulin injections to make your sugar levels balance.
Among Hispanics rates were:

And these are not statistics for statistics sake: there are seriously implications following a diabetes diagnosis, and some cases can be fatal. In 2007, diabetes was listed as the underlying cause on 71,382 death certificates and was listed as a contributing factor on an additional 160,022 death certificates. This means that diabetes contributed to a total of 231,404 deaths. There are other complications that arise from diabetes, including heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, blindness (leading cause), kidney disease (leading cause), nervous system damage, and amputation (leading cause). Add to this the cost of diabetes arising from people missing days of work too, which means the total costs of diagnosed diabetes in the US ranges in the billions, not including medical costs. Most of this includes the amount of lost work arising from the diagnosis. Factoring in the additional costs of undiagnosed diabetes, pre-diabetes, and gestational diabetes brings the total cost of diabetes in the United States in 2007 to $218 billion (including gestational diabetes.) Understanding the Diabetes Landscape There are two distinct form of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. :
Type 2 diabetes is called non-insulin dependent, and while it was previously thought that it was more adult onset but this is no longer the case. This is the most common form of diabetes, affecting 90-95% of the population. Both types of diabetes can cause serious complications. Symptoms The underlying cause of both types of diabetes will be insulin imbalance, leading to high levels of sugar. Chances are you’ll see the patient drinking a lot of water, perhaps with sallow, pale cheeks and dry mouth. There will also be increased urination (as many as several times within a single hour) because the body is trying to expel the increased sugar levels any way it can. Sometimes, there will be unexplained weight loss even though nutrition levels are completely normal, as well as a general weakened, tired feeling. If you feel you have any of the following, call your doctor immediately to see if you need to be treated for diabetes:

Treatment It is always better to err more on the side of prevention than cure. If you feel that you have any of these symptoms, consult your doctor immediately. For type 1 diabetes, there is no other way but to control it through insulin administration, and often through insulin injections. But nowadays, there are so many other delivery systems of insulin including the pump and the patch to administer insulin through more benign means. For type 2 diabetes, a lot of the medication is oral, because the patients don’t make enough insulin to move glucose into the cells where they belong. The body’s cells can also become more “insulin resistant” which means they don’t take in glucose as well as they should. Type 2 diabetes pills can come in the following formats:
•
Sulfonylureas (these lower blood sugar by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin);
•
Biguanides (these pills improve the ability of insulin to move sugar into cells, especially the muscle cells);
There are also several combination therapies for those who are insulin dependent, and it really comes down to finding the optimal treatment that’s right for you.

Diet and Exercise Of course, diet and exercise play a huge role in treating diabetes. As a general rule, stay away from fatty foods and heavy carbs, and a lot of sugar-laden beverages. Exercise has been proven to reverse type 2 diabetes (type 1 diabetes is generally irreversible); so there is much promise if you find time to exercise for just 20-30 minutes a day. The person who can take control of the situation and help change the statistics is you. Don’t dismiss the seriousness and complications of diabetes: there are a world of options out there. Human Insulin The human insulin protein is composed of 51 amino acids, and has a molecular weight of 5808 Da. The name comes from the Latin insula for "island". Insulin's structure varies slightly between species of animals. Insulin from animal sources differs somewhat in "strength" (in carbohydrate metabolism control effects) in humans because of those variations. Porcine insulin is especially close to the human version.
Control of Insulin When control of insulin levels fails, diabetes mellitus can result. As a consequence, insulin is used medically to treat some forms of diabetes mellitus. Patients with type 1 diabetes depend on external insulin (most commonly injected subcutaneously) for their survival because the hormone is no longer produced internally. [2] Patients with type 2 diabetes are often insulin resistant and, because of such resistance, may suffer from a "relative" insulin deficiency. Some patients with type 2 diabetes may eventually require insulin if other medications fail to control blood glucose levels adequately. Over 40% of those with Type 2 diabetes require insulin as part of their diabetes management plan.

Walking There are so many ways to stay fit, even when it’s icy and snowing outdoors. The trick is to really get inspired and get moving! Above all, don’t give up your fitness goal during the winter: your body and mind will be refreshed, energized and recharged!
Walking
Winter may be a time for celebration, festivities, Thanksgiving dinners and making yule logs and gingerbread houses. But it is also typically a time to pack on the pounds, and a season of many excuses. Some range from the simple, “it’s too cold outside” to the “I’ll do it after New Year’s” category, and it’s hard to stay motivated when there is so much going on indoors.

When in doubt…walk! Studies have shown that walking may well be the best form of exercise since not only is it beneficial to heart health, it is really benign on the joints as well. Most runners burn around 100 calories per mile, and walking generally gives you about half that amount (even though the old wives tale may show that walking and running are equal—they’re not). But still, walking is nothing to sneeze at. Most respectable athletes or hobbyists will not only burn a good amount of calories, especially during the winter when your body has to work harder to keep you warm. Once you start at a brisk pace, it’s very likely that your body becomes warmer and you won’t need heavy wool clothing. Don’t underestimate how strenuous walking can be, especially in the winter. Don’t walk when it is particularly inclement weather, and especially in blizzards and sleet-like conditions because you can easily slip and injure yourself. Stretch your muscles before you work out, just as you would with another aerobic exercise. Don’t forget to finish your workout by stretching your muscles. After all, walking can be an intense cardiovascular sport for many.

If you thought snow shoeing was not a good workout then think again. Snow shoeing is quite a strenuous as well as a great outdoor experience. It’s a bit like cross country skiing except for the fact that you have those gigantic waffle-like shoes strapped to your feet. These ensure that you won’t completely sink into the snow but have your feet be protected well from the debris.
Ice skating is not only for Olympic athletes. People first started to ice skate over 4000 years ago in Finland! But it wasn't until the 14th century when a steel blade was added to the boots that people started skating on the ice rather than just gliding. If you think you can’t get a workout out of ice skating, then you’re in for a nice surprise. Even though many find good balance by learning it at a young age, ice skating can be learned even when you’re 50 years old. It’s a great winter alternative for those who are a bit bored with more traditional aerobic exercises, and is especially perfect for those who are flexible and agile.
Snow shoeing is also much gentler on the knees but gives you an excellent gluteal workout too. In fact, you can burn more calories snowshoeing than you can from walking, running or cross country skiing combined. According to Dr. Ray Browning of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado’s Health Science Center and Vail Mountain Man champion, “snowshoeing is the best bang-for-your-buck, fat-burning workout in winter.” Research shows that this type of exercise can burn around 420-1200 calories per hour. That's a lot of burn for a fairly low-key workout! From the monetary side, this is also a low-cost workout because people can rent shoes by the hour and go off in trails that are typically meant for hikers or even cross country skiers. Make sure your shoes definitely fit. The worst thing that can happen is that your snowshoe falls off in the middle of the woods and that wouldn’t be too fun. Do also stretch very well before you head out into the snow, because make no mistake—snow shoeing IS hard work. Don’t forget to hydrate. Even though you may feel like your body won’t need it, it is still exercise after all.
Plus, it’s a terrific calorie burner! Expect to burn around 700 calories each hour of ice skating which is the equivalent of a five mile run. Since ice skating involves a lot of coordination and because the weight of the entire body moves from one leg to another as you move around the ice, it’s might be useful to do a little weight training to build up the muscles in these areas first. This is especially important to prevent injury. Remember to practice this aerobic exercise at a moderate intensity for at least 30 minutes before ramping up. Do this for a few weeks before increasing the intensity and pace. Also, bundle up and make sure you wear some soft, protective clothing, especially for your knees, just in case you slip. Probably not a matter of "if" but more like "when." Group ice skating lessons may be a good bet before you go full-fledged on your own.

Skiing is one of the best exercises you could possibly undertake in the cold weather especially when there’s fresh snow on the ground. You don’t have to be a professional skier or a double diamond daredevil to enjoy skiing. Basic knowledge will do.
For first time skiboarders, the sport instant gratification! Skiboarding literally lets anyone go from beginner to fearless expert inside one season (or less), experiencing the same freedom and exhilaration that long-time snowriders gain after years of practice.
The sport tones your entire body while giving you a great cardiovascular workout that’s much more kind to your knees than say, running. It also strengthens your heart, your gluteal muscles and your quads. Since there is a lack of oxygen in higher altitudes, you may experience “ski sickness” when you do your first ski stint. This means you could have headaches, dizziness or nausea. So take it easy. If it’s your first attempt at skiing, take the “bunny slope” and really enjoy the ride. Even that gentle slope will give you a great workout, especially if you do it for at least a half hour. Before you venture skiing, stretch your muscles. Skiing can take a lot out of you and you want to be limber at all times. Remember to bend your knees as you go downhill and lean forward, not back. Make sure your ski poles are not too long, and use them safely to propel yourself forward.

Tips for Traveling Families How to survive long car trips with kids ... without leaving them by the side of the road

thinking about a long car trip with kids can be daunting for many parents. Sibling squabbles, bathroom breaks and plain old fidgeting can make parents rethink a vacation before it even begins.
The AAA Chicago Motor Club recommends parents involve kids in planning a trip by studying maps, choosing which attractions to visit, calculating how much will be spent on gas and choosing what to play in the car. Not only will this make the children look forward to the trip, but you’ll be sneaking in geography, history and math lessons as well. Here are ten tips to add to your packing list that have proved helpful to traveling families: 1 Something old. The security children find in a familiar object while away from home is priceless. “When leaving the motel we make re-packing the girls’ blankies our top priority,” says Kristin Varela, mom and creator of www.motherproof.com, a Web site that reviews cars based on what’s important to women and mothers. “Shoes and toiletries are easily replaceable, but a child without her favorite blankie or stuffed animal will make everyone miserable for the rest of the trip,” she adds. 2 Something new. Visit a dollar store before the trip and buy some new trinkets or activities for each child. Wrap them up and put them in a grab bag. Reward good behavior at regular

intervals—every 100 miles or every two hours—by letting the kids reach in and choose a prize. Print out travel games from the Web (www.momsminivan.com/ printables.html) or make up your own, such as finding license plates from every state. The sneaky secret here is that car games are also good for brain development. Games such as the ABC imaginary trip where children pack a bag for using letters of the alphabet develop cognitive organization and memory. I Spy and 20 Questions help build deductive reasoning skill. 3 Something borrowed. Let your children choose books, books on tape or music from the library. Audio books promote family discussions since everyone is on the same page and you can easily stop the CD and talk about the book. Borrowing timetested travel stuff—such as a neck pillow or lap desk—from a friend is also an option. 4 Something blue. And green, red and yellow colored pencils are musts for art projects. Crayons can melt in the heat, and regular paint and markers can let your kids’ creativity wander past the paper and onto the seats. 5 Something just in case. For kids who get motion sick, Varela recommends “lots and lots of disinfectant wipes, old towels for clean up, a change of clothes [so you don’t have to rummage through packed suitcases] and gallon Ziplocs to contain all the mess.”

6 Something to eat. Ambereen Tariq of Schaumburg has taken many long car trips with her kids, Mona and Maaz, now 6 and 4. “Lollipops are a great lifesaver because they take so long to finish,” she says. “I pack snacks like grapes, raisins and cookies in individual baggies and prefer juice boxes with straws so that they each have their own.” 7 Something to forget. That would be your temper. Strapping bundles of energy in car seats for several hours can make even the most angelic child a tad irritable. To reduce the drone of “Are we there yet?” trace out a simple map and highlight milestones when you pass them. Or hand out a roll of quarters to each kid. Every time they squabble, have them give one quarter back. Whatever they save can be their vacation souvenir money. Kids love this game. 8 Something for exercise. Don’t make your car trip a race against Google Maps. Factor in extra time because you’re traveling with kids that are not going to be tied to the map like adults will be. Tariq and her family stop every two to three hours so the kids can expend some energy. They cover the maximum distance while the children nap. Depending on the weather, pack a Frisbee or bubbles for use at a rest stop. Or eat at a fast food restaurant with an indoor play area. Consider staying at a motel with a pool. Or make a surprise stop at an ice rink en route rather than waiting until you reach your destination. 9 Something to consider. Parents often debate the merits of having a DVD player in the car, and experts agree that it has its pros and cons. “I’ve never met a parent who hasn’t thought it worth every cent,” says Joe Wiesenfelder, senior editor of www.cars.com. “Even parents who bemoan their children’s habit of sitting in front of the TV at home make an exception in the car.” Have the children use headphones while they watch a movie or battle one another on a virtual basketball court so the driver is less distracted. Mark Bilek, editorial director at Consumer Guide Automotive and the father of children ages 3, 5 and 7, agrees. But he cautions parents not to compromise on safety. Some minivans do not offer side-curtain air bags if you choose the entertainment system, he explains. Bilek recommends parents test the system first and set rules about using it. And don’t forget that those car games they complain about, the in-car chats, the views, the things that happen when the movie is off, are the stuff that builds family memories. 10 Something to cherish. Capturing memories is a creative way to pass time. Whether it’s keeping a journal, collecting postcards or using a disposable camera, kids can draw or write their account of the vacation and share it with their class when they return. Gradually, they can build a personal record of their travels, a souvenir that beats a gas station mug any time. What About the Dog? If you are planning a trip, have you considered whether or not your dog gets to come along? Do you know how to travel with your dog? Traveling with your dog can be loads of fun if you make all the right arrangements. However, poor planning can really ruin the vacation for everyone. If you think it would be best for your dog to stay behind, then look for a pet sitter or find a kennel where you can board your dog. If you have decided that your furry companion should be part of your trip, let the planning begin. Start by keeping a collar with current identification on your dog at all times. A microchip may also be beneficial for extra security. Before you travel, your dog should have basic training so he will be well-behaved during the trip. Then, plan the transportation, accommodations and daily activities. Learning how to travel with your dog can make the experience less stressful and a lot of fun! By Automobile The automobile is usually the best way to travel with dogs. If you own a vehicle, chances are your dog has ridden in it for trips to the vets, the park and so on. If not, now is the time to start. Some dogs have anxiety over riding in cars. The more positive your dog’s automobile experiences are, the more likely he will enjoy the rides. If your dog only rides in the car for vet visits, and he dislikes the vet, his anxiety is understandable. Try taking him for short, frequent car rides that end up at the park, dog supply store (where he will get a toy or treat), or another pleasant place. If your dog does not adjust to the car, then a road trip is not a good option. If you must bring your dog for a long car ride, ask your vet about possible anti-anxiety medications that can make the trip a bit easier on everyone. Otherwise, you should seek out other options. Remember, medications should be used sparingly. If you’ve decided that Rover can handle the trip, make sure you make all the proper arrangements. Plan Ahead Plot rest stops along the way while traveling with your dog, and plan to stop every 3-5 hours to allow your dog to relieve himself, drink water and stretch his legs (more or less depending on your dog’s needs). Make a list of several veterinary hospitals that are easily accessible from your route, preferably within one hour’s drive from any given point. Check that they will be open during your travel.
