Fashion 2012

Summer Trends That Defy Time... This summer you will find yourself wrapped in heavenly fabrics adorned with fabulous vivid color as well as soft neutrals and pastels - most popular being tangerine and soft mint green. Look again this summer to see lots of red and tons of lace not to mention flowing floral prints hanging on the racks. As always, black and white fashions defy time, and keep their well earned place as big colors for summer of 2012. Black and white fashions were big on the runways this season, most fashion designers showed black and white in some fashion or another . Let's face it - you can't go wrong with the traditional black and white outfit. The designers know this little fact, and continue to cash in on it. This season, dresses and skirts will remain must haves, but fashion designers have also given us all fun fashions. Fashions that will offer wonderful vivid prints, stripes, and geometric prints - not to mention some great new takes on animal prints. The main theme this summer is somewhat tailored, and classic, but with a touch of bold. More edgy. Let's start out with what's up with fashion color trends: The big color trend for 2012 summer is tangerine and mint green. Yes, you read right – mint green is the biggest color trend for the upcoming season. The racks will be full of designs that are done up in a soft whimsical version of orange and mint green. The color that jumps out at the head of the line for this summer when it comes to neon shades, is orange! Less face it there is no other color that can make a loud fashion statement as bright orange. So need a new handbag or a great pair of shoes?

8

Make it orange. So the color trend you'll be seeing this summer, especially in handbags and shoes is neon's. Such as bright blues, yellows, greens, oranges, and hot pinks. Do you crochet? Well it's back. Crochet vests are big this summer, maybe you can look in the back of your closet where maybe you might have a bit of a crochet number lurking. Belt bags are one of the great big trends. However, I am not talking "fanny packs'...Stick to the new small square flat belt bags - so cute, and less weight to carry on that shoulder. Feet need a rest? Kitten heels are very popular. The kitten heel is a good choice this summer. They are feminine and classic, as well as comfortable. Creamy neutrals, all done up to give you a very feminine look. Flowing pajama-styles, tunics. All meant to be classical, and again comfortable. Think whimsical patterns. From bird prints to deers, fruit, feathers, you name it. Tops with whimsical prints are huge. You will see everything from blouses to dresses all sporting wild prints. Stripes seem to hold a place in fashion year after year. You can't go wrong wearing stripes, from head to toe... High-Waisted flare pants are back this summer, the pants that Katharine Hepburn made so popular. I suggest you pair this style of pants with a great heel, just to give the old look a bit of flare. The new flare pant as a rule has loops for a skinny belt, so you can flash up your look with a trendy, thin belt. That

Little Dress White reflects innocence, simplicity and purity. Although, not every white outfit may suit you, here are a few pointers on how to wear white well: First, be certain that white suits your complexion. If you have naturally dark skin or are tan don’t worry because you can wear white well and look remarkable. On the other hand, if white makes you look even more pale, avoid wearing it. When choosing short white dresses, make sure the fabric is solid and thick. We don’t want our undergarments seen, do we? If you don’t know how to feel the fabric, here are a tips on how you can choose the material and check the quality. First, hold the garment up against the light then put your hand behind the material. Check if your hand is too visible and obvious. Of course, if you can spot your hand and its color it will show all that’s underneath. That’s a major NO NO! If a white garment is lined, then it’s a better quality, and not likely to be see-through. Choose linens or cottons that have high thread count which will ensure the thickness of the fabric. Let’s talk about what goes on underneath those strapless white dresses. Do not ever attempt to use underwear that isn’t the same color as your skin tone. White underwear shouldn’t be worn either. Just stick with your skin tone to guarantee that nothing peeks out. To complement the whole look, pick a great pair of shoes to match. If you want to go over the top, try wearing a pair of red heels. That will surely make you look unique and outstanding! If you want to keep it simple, use color variations of beige, brown, tan and soft gray. Remember white suits a lot of occasions, from a white prom dress to an old school look with a vintage white dress. White can even be used for flower girl dresses and different romantic birthday occasions. There are many options available, so be sure to check these all out. Remember, white clothes are easy to pair up with just about any accessory. Wooden accessories such as bangles, necklaces, etc., will be great for summer, more sophisticated metallic accessories or jewelry would suit many different formal events and parties.

For Summer 2012 designers are inspired by diverse influences, showcasing a range of styles and lifestyles — from free and playful to light and breezy, and contemporary classics. Colors likewise reflect these differing moods, encapsulating vivid brights, soft muted tones and fun-loving pastels. “Consumers look to summer for renewed energy, optimism and the promise of a brighter day,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “They have learned how color can help them alter a mood, while providing the vitality and enthusiasm that enables them to experiment with new looks and color combinations.” Provocative Tangerine Tango, an enticing juicy orange, is a vivacious and appealing refresher to enliven anyone’s outlook this summer. Providing a jolt of energy, Solar Power radiates warmth and lots of cheer. Fanciful Bellflower, a distinct ornamental purple, exudes uniqueness and creativity. Scintillating and sexy, Cabaret is a sensual and intense rosy-red — an excellent choice for summer clothing and cosmetics. Sodalite Blue, a classic maritime hue, brings order and calmness to mind. Like an anchor to a ship, this dependable shade works with every color in the palette.

20

Cockatoo, a tactile blue-green, is sure to make your spirits soar. This unusual hue adds a whimsical touch to the palette and will make a statement this summer. Margarita, a piquant yellow-green, lifts spirits with its refreshing and stimulating glow. Reminiscent of a blossoming garden on an early summer morning, fragrant Sweet Lilac evokes the fresh scents of summer. This delicate pinkish lilac adds a touch of romance to any wardrobe. Natural, versatile neutrals add practicality to this season’s brights. Driftwood, an adaptable blend of beige and gray with a slightly weathered feel, and Starfish, a perfect warm summer neutral, complement all colors featured in this season’s top 10. For an ultra-bold look this summer, try mixing Bellflower with Tangerine Tango and Cabaret. Combine Margarita with Sweet Lilac and Cockatoo for a subtle alternative, or Margarita with Sweet Lilac and Driftwood for a more practical variation. Solar Power is best juxtaposed with Sodalite Blue and for a safer bet, add a natural neutral like Starfish to the mix. For over 18 years, Pantone, the global authority on color, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season’s most important color trends. This report previews the most prominent hues for Summer 2012. Pantone, the global authority on color, at pantone.com

Beauty

Beauty at the Beach Look and feel your best this summer— with expert advice on toning up, summer skincare and sitting pretty by the pool.

6

Tips for a … Beach-Ready Body! If trying on swimsuits and hitting the beach has you feeling anxious, don’t worry. There’s still time to tone up for summer. Steve Lamont, author of Muscles in Minutes (Hatherleigh Press) offers the following six tips for looking your summer best:

1

Set reasonable, Goals provide a attainable goals roadmap that you will

follow in your pursuit of increased muscle mass or physical conditioning. When planning a goal, write it down. Being able to view your goal helps you understand the best way to attain it. Be positive and focus mentally on each aspect of your training, from mental training to diet, cardio, flexibility and strength training.

22

2

Don't starve Be sure to eat at least 1.2 grams of protein for every yourself

pound you weigh. Eat at least 6 to 8 small, protein-based meals a day and drink 8 to 12 glasses of water. Choose lowglycemic carbohydrates and be sure to take in essential fatty acids and the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals. Eating right will give you the energy for long days of swimming and beach volleyball.

3

Whether your aim is to Include cardio but don’t overdo it shed some pounds or

gain muscle mass, make cardio a part of your fitness program. But be careful not to go overboard. Losing weight too quickly can compromise muscle gains you have made, because it may prompt your body to protect itself by retaining its fat stores. You may lose the weight, but a high percentage will be muscle and not fat. So if you are trying to become lean and hold muscle mass, begin your cardio and diet months in advance of the summer season.

4

For the best results don't forget negative training. In weight training, negative training takes place when the muscle is being lengthened, in the negative phase of the rep. This is the strongest of all muscle contractions, and must be slow and controlled throughout the complete range of motion.

5

Always stretch before a workout, but make sure to do it right.

Stretching is important, but must be done properly to avoid injury. Each stretch must involve only one joint, and you should never

feel any discomfort in the joint or ligaments. Do not time your stretches--hold them until you no longer feel tension. Be aware of your posture both inside and outside the gym. Good posture can help you do exercises correctly in the gym and look great outside the gym.

6

Find a workout partner with similar goals to your own. It is always best to have a workout partner with similar goals to your own. Your workout partner can support you mentally and provide proper spotting, which is absolutely necessary in making progress and avoiding injuries.

Get a beautiful tan without a single ray of sunshine Worried about the sun’s potential effects on your skin? But you still want a great tan. try CVS Brand Self-tanning Lotion or ultra Fine Mist. Just apply and let dry. that’s it. you’ll sport a healthy-looking tan in no time.

S.O.S. — Save Our Skin! Sunscreen Explained

What do all those numbers mean and what’s the best formulation for me? First of all, let’s address the cryptic numbers on the bottles. SPF stands for “sun protection factor.” It’s a method of measuring how long you can stay in the sun without burning. To determine the appropriate level for you, multiply the SPF number by the number of minutes it would take you to start burning without protection So, if you would normally burn in 15 minutes without protection, a sunscreen with SPF 8 will shield you for about 120 minutes. If you burn in just five minutes, this same sunscreen would only protect you for 40 minutes. Many dermatologists agree that a sunscreen with SPF 15 is adequate for most people. Look for broadspectrum formulas that protect skin from UVB (the burning rays) and UVA (those that cause sunspots, wrinkles and cancer.)

26

Remember, reapplication is important , especially after swimming or sweating. Reapplying every two hours or so is a safe bet. And don’t forget that using a higher level of SPF doesn’t mean you can skimp on the amount of sunscreen you apply. Using an SPF 30, for example, doesn’t give you double amount of time in the sun of an SPF 15. It takes about a full ounce of sunscreen (imagine a full shot glass) to amply cover your body. It’s a good idea to apply sunscreen before you head out. This way, you can make sure you get all the tricky spots before they burn. Plus, the chemical ingredients in most sunscreens take at least 15 minutes to react with your skin. Remember, lips need suncare too! Look for lip balm with SPF to keep your pucker protected.

Soothing Sunburn OK. So you overdid it in the sun. And now your angry skin wants revenge. First, take a few aspirin or ibuprofen pills to reduce the inflammation. Cooling aloe gels may provide on-contact relief, but pick up a hydrocortisone cream to address the swelling. Cold compresses will help sooth the skin, Keeping the skin moist will help alleviate peeling, so hop in a cool bath. Whatever you do, stay clear of hot water-the heat aggravates the skin and increases swelling. And next time, cover up. A bad sunburn only ups your odds of developing skin cancer.

Fake, Don’t Bake! Just a few years ago, a sunless tan meant streaky, orange, not-sorealistic results from self-tanners. Thankfully, as more and more women recognize the damage of the sun, skin and suncare companies have nearly perfected the sunless tan. A natural-looking tan can be yours within hours— even minutes! The newest formulations include a clear, spray-on aerosol version that is practically goof-proof to use. We also love moisturizers that include a self-tanner. The color gradually builds with daily use of the lotion, creating a realistic, sun-kissed look. To get started, you’ll want to test the color to make sure it will produce the tan you want (without any allergic reactions). Choose a small inconspicuous spot, like on your tummy or upper thigh, and follow the instructions. Wait the allotted amount of time so the product can completely develop then decide if it is right for your all-over tan.

Tips for Using Sunscreens • Use an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen on skin that receives daily sun exposure. Apply generous amounts of SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen when you are active outdoors. • Reapply often, after swimming, perspiring, or using a towel. • Don’t forget that lips get sunburned, too, so apply a lip balm that contains sunscreen.

Self-Tan Tips

beauty

1) Scrub up. Exfoliation is a key part of self-tanning. Tanner can cling to rough patches, making for a spotty finish. Shave your legs (this also removes dead skin cells) then grab a loofah or body wash with exfoliators to scrub away dry skin. Use a gentle scrub on your face. 2) Don’t overlook the “giveaway” spots. Blotches around your hairline or spots between fingers or on the sides of hands are dead giveaways that your tan’s from a can (or bottle!). Use a bit of moisturizer or petroleum jelly around the hairline, on eyebrows and in your belly button. After applying tanner to the rest of your body, wash your hands. Then spray tanner on the backs of hands and rub them together, keeping your fingers together. 3) Start from your lower legs (don’t forget a swipe across the tops of your feet!) and work your way up. Circular motions help cover a larger area more evenly which helps the tanner to penetrate more effectively. 4) Leave amply time for drying. Depending on the formula you select, drying time can vary. Your best bet is to give yourself enough time to hang around in an old, loose t-shirt as the tanner sinks in. In a rush? Try using your blow dryer on the cool setting to speed the process. And don’t apply tanner too close to bedtime. You (and if you opt for a tinted formula, your sheets) can end up a streaky mess.

5) If, after the tanner develops, you discover you made a mistake, scrub the area with an exfoliating body scrub or loofah. Fill in missed or patchy spots with a bronzer powder or gel.

Sitting Pretty—and Smart in the Sun Before you head out: 1. Start by spreading sunscreen all over your body, head to toe. Make sure you get areas like under your bathing suit straps and along the edges of your suit. As you move around, so does your bathing suit, potentially leaving unexpected areas exposed to the sun. And don’t forget places like ears, the scalp where you part your hair and between toes! 2. Address any acne on your face with a bit of drying solution, then follow with sunscreen. Use an Oil-free formula help to reduce facial breakouts from clogged pores on the skin. 3. If you can’t face being bare-faced at the beach, touch up with waterproof mascara, a hint of bronzer and a little tinted lip balm. 4. Work leave-in conditioner into hair and comb through with a wide-toothed comb. Sweep hair away from face into a ponytail or behind with a headband. 5. Skin isn’t the only thing that can become irritated in the heat. Keep eyes cool and soothed with moisturizing eye drops.

3. Method First, make sure the chest is clean and dry. Ideally, you will work with furniture that has a solid background in a pastel shade or white color. You can definitely stencil on a wooden chest, but make sure it is sanded down and there are no uneven surfaces. To nail this project on the head, we recommend that you plan out the stencils on paper and find the color palette that really works for you. Kids will love this! Just place the stencils on blank sheets of paper, then use crayons or colored pencils that closely resemble the colors of the paint you’d like to use. 1. Once you’ve finished this, you can place the papers on the actual piece of furniture so you will get an idea of what the

32

4. final piece will look like. When you have a sense of what colors and arrangements will work for you, it’s time to get down to business and start this project! 2. Put 2” painters tape on all four sides of the surface you are going to stencil. Make sure the tape is flush with the edge of the chest. You’ll need to do this to make sure the stencils are snug below the tape so no paint spills over to the edges of the chest. 3. Spray the back of stencils with Krylon Easy-Tack Repositionable Adhesive® (preferably outdoors) and place them in position on chest. (Press them all over to make good contact; this helps keep paint from seeping under stencil for a clean result).

5. 4. Put a dab of paint on a paper plate. Use a small stencil brush to get a tiny amount of paint (remember, two light coats is better than one heavy coat) so that it doesn’t leak under the stencil. Lightly pounce up and down in the stencil area and make sure you do all of one color first. When you finish painting, gently remove stencils. Do touch-ups, if you wish, with a small watercolor brush.

We love the accessibility of smoothie chains, but if you really knew what was inside the options at the majority of smoothie bars, we bet you’d be running for the hills. Don’t be mistaken by the photos of fresh fruits and colorful drinks; there are not that many differences between your venti mocha Frappaccino at Starbucks® and a power size protein shake at Jamba Juice. Ever glance at the caloric content on one of those? You’ll be knocked back to yesterday when you see the truth. Sure, the Pomegranate Pick Me Up at Jamba Juice looks healthy. Pomegranates? Packed with antioxidants! But wait. If you go for the 32 ounce power size, that’s over 500 calories and 105 grams of sugar. The “juice blends” are sugar and other artificial sweeteners, while ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sherbet are simply delicious desserts masked as healthy ingredients. Jamba Juice isn’t the only chain with some dieting red flags. At Boston based smoothie and burrito chain Boloco®, the smoothies are popular options that eschew traditional nutrition traps like whole milk and ice cream. While the options are delicious and healthier

36

than milkshakes, they can still pack on the pounds if you’re looking to stay trim. One popular option, the “Jimmy Carter Shake”, is made with skim milk, peanut butter, banana, and nonfat frozen yogurt. The largest option, the original size, packs in over 900 calories and 29 grams of fat, not to mention over 80 grams of sugar! If you just have to have a store-bought option, consider the smaller size. 900 calories is about half of your daily caloric intake! Don’t waste it all on something you’re going to feel guilty about. A smaller option is a reasonable choice that will give you the satisfaction of knowing you haven’t sabotaged your diet. Dietician Leah McGrath tells us, “I think it’s definitely smoothie trap when you think of them as beverages in addition to a meal. They could replace your meal!” Fruitful Recipes Ah, the glory days of summer: sand between your toes, a beach hat and sunglasses the only necessary accessories, and a frosty drink in your hand. But bail on the pina colada, and ditch the strawberry daiquiri. Those alcoholic beverages are basically composed of booze, chemicals, and the arch enemy of healthy people everywhere: sugar. But this doesn’t mean you have to spend your summer vacation sipping only bottled water, either. For a berry smoothie packed with antioxidants, check out this easy recipe: Antioxidant Berry Blast Smoothie Ingredients: ½ cup frozen strawberries ½ cup frozen raspberries ½ cup frozen blueberries ½ cup frozen blackberries 1 cup French vanilla yogurt ½ cup cold water ½ cup crushed ice

While traditional yogurt is fine, Greek yogurt brands like Fage® and Chobani® are thicker, custard-like options with a lot less sugar, and a special punch of protein. If you’re really on a tight budget or are just tired of spending upwards of $6 per container, you can make your own yogurt for a super economical and healthy option. Check out this recipe from The Leather District Gourmet, Jacqueline Church, who graciously allowed us to follow her steps for making home-made Greek-style yogurt: Start with the best quality Greek-style yogurt. A small container will do. Say “buh-bye” to this section of the dairy case -you’ll not be returning once you try this at home! Use this as your “starter.” Try 2% Organic, local hormone-free milk. 1. Heat 2% milk till it’s steaming and starting to bubble. If you have a thermometer this will be around 180-190 degrees. 2. Take off the heat, let cool to 120 then mix with starter (2 tbsp). 3. Cover bowl with plastic wrap, swaddle with 2 kitchen towels. 4. Keep in oven with light on (no other heat is necessary) for 4 hours or over night. 5. Awake or return to find the miracle of homemade yogurt. That’s it! 6. To make it Greek-style: Place cheesecloth or a basket style coffee-filter in a strainer, over a bowl. 7. Refrigerate for a couple of hours until you see the sort of pale chartreuse liquid gathering in the bowl. That’s the whey. 8. The thickened yogurt is perfect to eat as is, or swirl in some jam, chop of fresh fruit or use it to sauce your next sustainable seafood dish! 9. Don’t forget to save a couple tablespoons as starter for the next batch! Straining out the whey to make Greek-style yogurt removes even more of the lactose or sugar which can be helpful for those with insulin issues. Straining the whey is not necessary but it results in a creamier, richer, premium-style yogurt. Use yogurt in place of all or some of the mayonnaise in recipes, use in saucing, in dips. Yogurt made at home is refreshing and just slightly tart, not sour and watery like store-bought (www.jacquelinechurch.com). If you’re a sweet tooth trying to go healthy, consider adding in a banana to your smoothie. The riper the bananas, the sweeter your smoothie will taste, so don’t fear the brownish bananas from last week’s grocery shopping trip. They still taste great when they’re chopped up in a blender, and we promise it will cure your sugar craving. Apples and grapes are equally as sweet fruits that won’t sabotage your healthy aspirations. While it’s okay to use frozen yogurt in place of Greek or regular yogurt for an after dinner dessert smoothie, try to keep a distance from the frosty, after-meal treats until dinner time. Here’s an option for your sweet tooth: Super Strawberry Banana Dream Smoothie Ingredients: 1 cup crushed ice 1 cup frozen strawberries 1 over ripe banana ½ cup water 1 cup strawberry yogurt

If you’re a diehard sugar-junkie with a propensity for pouring sugar, Splenda™, or Sweet N Low™ into your drinks, consider taking a step back before you tear open those packages. Fruit is already rather sweet, and overloading your meals is a one way ticket on the diabetes train. But if you’re having serious sugar cravings and think an unsweetened smoothie tastes bland, try this recipe for a serious punch of sweetness and flavor: Sugar Addict's Survival Smoothie Ingredients: 1 cup crushed ice 1 over ripe banana ½ cup grapes (green or red) ½ cup frozen raspberries ½ cup chopped Macintosh apple ½ cup frozen strawberries 1 cup yogurt (vanilla or flavor of your choice) Some of the best smoothie recipes aren’t even made with traditional ingredients like strawberries and bananas. While cruising for unorthodox smoothie ideas, we spoke to Tina from the popular blog Carrots ‘N’ Cake. “My best idea for keeping smoothies healthy is to think outside of the box. I think people automatically associate smoothies with fruit, but they can include veggies, oatmeal, ground flaxseed meal, coconut, and a variety of other nutrients. I always try to have at least 1 fruit and veggie in my smoothies.” Tina shared this delicious recipe from Carrots ‘N’ Cake with us: Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie Ingredients: 1/2 cup mashed sweet potato 1 ripe banana 1/4 cup plain or vanilla yogurt 1/4 cup vanilla soy milk 1 tbsp hemp (or whey) protein 1 tbsp agave nectar 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 cup ice Dash of nutmeg Directions: Combine all ingredients in blender until smooth. More info at Tina’s website, www.visitcarrotsncake.com. Breakfast or Dessert? There’s a big difference between what’s appropriate to gobble up for breakfast, and what a reasonable dessert is after a meal. Remember, your first meal of the day is like starting your car. You want to have enough fuel to sustain you until your next meal. While a sudden sugar rush may feel good when it hits, a few minutes later you’ll probably be headed to the coffee machine to prevent that afternoon nap. Try to fuse together your love of treats with your need for quality nutrition. Nobody wants to feel deprived of what they want. Instead, do the legwork to find treats that are healthy and delicious. Despite the hazards of smoothie overload, everyone deserves a treat sometimes with these easy-to-do recipes!

A Rose by any Other Name... Would Smell

as Sweet...

T

here has been so much written about the perfection of the rose, which is probably the most well-known and beloved flower of generations.

“Love is much like a wild rose, beautiful and calm, but willing to draw blood in its defense.” Mark Overby “You are responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery “There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted.” Henri Matisse The end of winter brings us beautiful, flower-filled gardens, and what says summer more than roses? Every time one passes by a garden filled with red, pink, white roses, the only thought that can go through the mind is, “What exceptional taste.”

38

Growing roses requires passion and persistence, as any passionate rose grower knows. Apart from encountering the proverbial thorn, growing roses takes patience, and a little skill and care which you will develop.

Myth Versus Fact Myth: Growing roses is really for the pros. Fact: This is not true. Anyone can grow roses, it's really easy. Myth: You need all sorts of pesticides, fertilizers to grow roses properly. Fact: Untrue. You can grow roses with good watering habits and ensuring the plants have enough sun exposure.

Types of Roses

Soil

When most people think of a “rose” they’re thinking of the Hybrid Tea variety. A typical hybrid tea flower is pretty large, and has several petals and a large center. This particular variety came down from China, and they prefer tropical climates the best. Of course since many of you are residing in areas that can get very cold, there are some hardy varieties that can withstand the frigid winters. These include the creamy pink lemon-edged “Peace” flower or the coral “Tropicana.”

There is no need to fret. Roses will tolerate a wide variety of soils, but they tend to do better in clay soils than sandy ones because of the moisture content. Remember that the ideal soil is compostrich: add manure, moistened peat moss, leaf mold, ground bark as and when needed. The richer the soil, the more vibrant the roses. If the soil is very acidic, you may need to add more lime. Remember to weed your roses frequently! Try to remove the weeds by their actual roots, and not their tops. Avoid herbicides since roses are very sensitive to them.

Hybrid teas actually mix very well with other roses and plants, and they look compact in a bed. Other types of roses that will grow well include Floribundas (hardier and more disease resistant); and Grandifloras (they are big and vigorous, if you have the space for it). Grandifloras like “Queen Elizabeth” and “Sonia” are vigorous, lovely bushes that will last for years to come. If you have trellises or fences you want to cover with roses, choose the climbing roses variety. But if you are expecting flexible vines, you’ll be disappointed. Climbing roses have stiff canes and the only aid they have to hook onto things is their thorns.

40

Roses have long roots, so dig deep into the soil before you plant those bundles of flowering joy. Sun Exposure Site and sun exposure requirements depend on the type of rose bush you plant. Most roses need about 5-6 hours of sunlight per day, but other shrubs including climbers and Rugosa types will grow in shady regions. Is there a difference between morning and afternoon sun? Absolutely. Afternoon sun is harsher, and morning sun will dry off leaves without leaving them brittle.

A Rose is A Rose

If you’re a novice gardener, the subject of pruning roses may cause you much angst.

Planting Roses 1. First, choose your rose plant. These should have a nice-sized root ball. Dig an appropriate sized hole for the root ball. 2. Add some compost or manure to the hole. Now place the roots over this mixture and place the crown of the rose bush at ground level and fill the remaining soil around it. Now make sure the plant is sturdy. Water it well. 3. Make sure you inspect the rose plant periodically throughout the day, especially if it is placed in direct sunlight. This can make the leaves and roots become dry. Water frequently, taking care not to over water. Fertilizing Your Roses The more you lavish attention and care on your plants, the better they will reward you with gorgeous flowers. Fertilization may sound like hard work, but it really isn’t. Water is the key fertilizer (sound surprised?!) and gives the plants much better growth opportunity than chemically-treated rose foods. Other safe foods to feed your plant include seakelp and Canola meal. All you need to do is to apply fertilizers as soon as you plant the rose bushes and then leave them: there’s no need to over fertilize. Pests & Mildew

Pruning Roses If you’re a novice gardener, the subject of pruning roses may cause you much angst. But don’t think of it as anything else than letting the sunlight filter into the flowers and letting them breathe. Pruning is basically common sense: remove the dead wood and leaves and let the healthy part of the rose bush flourish. Why should you prune? First of all, pruning helps redirect the growth of the plant. When a plant is pruned, it redirects its energy into producing new stems, leaves and flowers. All that dead, useless material is just sapping the bush of energy so it makes sense that these are eliminated as quickly as possible. There are three methods of pruning: hard pruning, moderate pruning and light pruning. Hard pruning is when stems are cut a substantial amount (think 10-12 inches). Moderate pruning means stems are cut by about half of their height. Light pruning means the stems are cut back to less than two thirds of their length. Enjoy Your Rose Garden There’s a myth floating around that roses are hard plants to grow and maintain. Not so! Once you grow roses, you’ll be hooked for life. Just remember to buy roses that will thrive in your temperature and soil and you’ll be all set Plus these gorgeous flowers will elicit such praise and compliments from everyone. Which is a sweet reward in and of itself. images/ istockphoto.com

Yes, mildew is one of the most problematic aspects of growing roses. But not all people like spraying their precious flowers with insecticides. If you are one of these earth-conscious folk, consider planting disease-free roses like Rugosas. Make sure you remove

all the leaves before they begin to regrow in the summer and just be vigilant. Chances are you won’t need any chemical repellants.

Spirit

Lifting Your Spirits T

he warmth of a dog’s greeting when you come home from work. The way a cat curls up at your feet and purrs in delight. These may be frivolous sweet nothings to many people, but there has been documented evidence that these sweet purrings may actually lift up your spirit. Dogs, for one, don’t hide their feelings. Have you ever met a dog that was manipulative or schematic? They hang their tongues out when they’re happy and they aim to please. They basically consider you their “king.” Such groveling behavior is enough to flatter the most diehard of narcissists. If dogs every do something guilty or wrong, they’ll just look at you with melting eyes and beg for forgiveness. If you’re happy, they join in the celebration. If you’re sad, they’ll do anything to make you happy. It’s been shown: unconditional love leads to happiness. Also, dog owners are prone to getting more exercise, and exercise triggers

adrenaline that can make you happier. Having a pet contributes to your growth and well being: you feel like you are actually caring for something, and your love for the creature begins to grow. People will pay a high price for love. This applies especially to folks in homes, or invalids who want affection from everyone to heal. Pets offer this affection, unconditionally and lovingly. Having a pet also cements relationships with other people. Pets and Senior Citizens Mary Miller, a retired schoolteacher from Arizona loves Nick, her 3 year old Springer spaniel. “Nick has brought a lot of love into my life,” she says. And her husband isn’t a bit jealous, either! “Having Nick around has definitely livened up our home life,” says Ed, her husband, a retired 66 year old electrician. “Pets are an important form of social contact,” says Dr. Alan Beck, director of the Center for Human-Animal Bond at the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University. “For older people who

shown that Alzheimer's patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is an animal in the home. Caregivers also feel less burdened when there is a pet, particularly if it is a cat, which generally requires less care than a dog.” Also, people who have pets in their homes are generally less apt to have mood disorders than people who don’t. Stress Pets have demonstrated the ability to reduce stress in patients. Dr. Judith M. Siegel, professor of public health at UCLA has observed that seniors who have pets were able to better cope with stress without having to enter the healthcare system. In a study that she conducted, Siegel surveyed about 1,000 older adult Medicare patients. She found that those who owned pets appeared less distressed than those who didn’t have one. But of course pets are not a cure all. No furry creature can possibly be a “cure” for hypertension, for example. But they can certainly abate the level of distress. Think of them as “emotional vitamins” that can help you make it through the day without blowing a fuse. The 65-plus population, particularly vulnerable to loneliness and stress-related diseases, can reap enormous benefits from pet companionship. Cats have been helpful with stress too. When Jerry Geider was out of work, he spent three months polishing his resume and hunting for a job. “I spent a lot of time going on job interviews and sending out resumes, with nothing panning out,” the Seattle resident recalls. “Some days, the only thing that kept me smiling was my dog licking my face and wagging his tail. And often that was just what it took to put me in a positive frame-of-mind before an interview.” Many pet owners have said the same thing: when you’re depressed and stressed, watching and playing with a pet can work wonders for the soul. Whether it’s a hamster, a dog, a guinea pig, a kitten or a rabbit, there’s something about pets that can stamp a smile on the most dour face. Conquering Loneliness

may be less mobile and who have few or limited companions, animals provide family and friendship, something to care for and to be recognized by.” We all have a basic need to nurture something or someone. This basic need to love and care for another does not stop when your kids have flown the coop. The best thing about pets is no matter how old they become, they will always need this nurturing that instills a sense of joy in you, no matter how old you may be. Pets do have a shorter lifespan but the companionship id wotrt it. Longevity Some studies have shown that pet ownership has demonstrated increased chances of survival after heart attacks or reducing blood pressure. There is also evidence to suggest that pets can sometimes help people with Alzheimer’s. Dr. Lynette Hart, associate professor at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says, ““Studies have

Human beings need TLC to feel loved and wanted. Dr. Beck says “A pet is someone to share your life with,” he says. “There are a lot of people in this world who live alone. As a society, many of us live in apartments in big cities. We may not know our neighbors. We may be separated geographically from our extended families. Maybe we’re divorced or widowed and live alone. And so for people in these circumstances, pets can help fill the ‘people void’ in their lives.” Psychologist Judith Siegel, a professor of public health at UCLA, conducted a study in 1999 study that showed how pets helped one group of people living with AIDS less depressed. The male AIDS patients who had a pet were 300% less likely to get depressed than those who did not. “Pet ownership among men who have AIDS provides a certain level of companionship that helps them cope better with the stresses of their lives,” Siegel says. The Bottom Line Owning pets may not feel the same as having children, but if someone you know is ill, lonely, or depressed, consider a pet for them (even temporarily). Some pets are high maintenance, but yours doesn’t have to be. Remember, unconditional love is what it’s all about!

Women's Health

You’ve heard this word so often that you’re probably sick of hearing about it. We understand. Antioxidants have been written about to death and people toss this word as freely as they do “global warming” or “organic.” Here, we explore the reason why antioxidants have achieved pop cult status in the world of health and medicine, and how you can get more than your fair share of them. What’s the Hype All About? First, before we even discuss the subject of antioxidants, you should know about free radicals. No, we’re not talking about liberal country rejuvenators or dictators: we’re talking about substances that actually assault your body. Free radicals are harmful atoms or groups of atoms that have an unpaired electron. They are formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Free radicals have a charge due to the excess or deficiency of electrons and they literally ravage your body to grab or donate electrons. This causes cell damage, and also harm to your DNA and proteins. The same oxidative process causes apples to turn brown, oils to decay and iron to rust. The last thing you want is your body to be defenseless against these radicals. Of course, no one is immune from the attack, but you can do a lot through diet and exercise to protect your cells from radicals causing damage to your body.

46

And no, free radicals are not external threats only. They are also produced from sources within your body, such as oxidants that arise from normal aerobic respiration, metabolism and inflammation. Of course the external factors are pretty obvious: these include sunlight, pollution, smoking and alcohol. The biggest worry about free radicals is probably cell damage. When damaged cells accumulate in your body, chances of cancer increase. Once formed, these radicals are like dominoes and can start a chain effect. Antioxidants to the Rescue Antioxidants are molecules as well. They safely interact with the free radicals and interfere in the chain reaction (of oxidation) before vital cells, DNA or cell membrane is damaged. Statistics have shown that people who have a diet rich in vegetables and fruits have lower incidents of cancer risk than people who don’t. There is no conclusive evidence to date that proves that extra antioxidants stave off cancer, but there’s a good chance that your health won’t deteriorate if you do. Antioxidants are also thought to increase longevity and reduce the risk of heart attacks. Here are some foods that have a high antioxidant content:

Antioxidants All Kinds of Berries Berries may well be the kings of the antioxidant-rich heap. These fruits are plentiful, fragile, charming and highly nutritive. They also have a lot of fiber, minerals and vitamins. Make sure your diet contains blueberries, raspberries and blackberries which are rich in proanthocyanidins. Other berries like raspberries and strawberries contain ellagic acid, a plant compound that combats carcinogens. Blueberries also have been suggested to delay the onset of age-related loss of cognitive function in adults. Broccoli Broccoli is probably one of the least favored foods of children, but this cruciferous vegetable has a lot of powerful antioxidants. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts contain a compound called indole-3-carbinol (I3C - a potent antioxidant that breaks down estrogen in the body) that reduces the risk of breast cancer and other estrogen-sensitive cancers, like cancer of the ovaries and cervix. Other studies have shown that broccoli can help fight cervical dysplasia, a precancerous condition. Broccoli contains other protective constituents like betacarotene, which can help prevent cancer. Tomatoes Tomatoes have been known to ward off certain kinds of cancer, prevent macular degeneration and cataracts, and help maintain mental function as we age. They contain lycopene, a relatively rare member of the carotenoid family, also found in pink grapefruit and twice as powerful as beta-carotene. There have been studies that have shown a reduction in prostrate cancer

48

incidents among men who eat more tomatoes or tomato sauce. Also, lycopene is fat-soluble, so eating tomatoes with oil can improve absorption. Red Grapes You’ve probably heard about how red wine can help your health. This is because it has substances called resveratrol and quercetin found in red grapes. These potent antioxidants boost heart health by acting as free-radical scavengers, reducing platelet aggregation and helping blood vessels remain open and flexible. Resveratrol can also protect against cancer and reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases, gastric ulcers, stroke and even osteoporosis. Garlic Garlic is legendary for many things: warding off vampires, building up the immune system, and staving off heart disease. The pungent garlic smell comes from the sulfur compounds in this herb, and these are also responsible for its healing benefits. Studies have shown that garlic keeps the heart healthy by lowering cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure, fighting free radicals and keeping blood from clotting. Other studies suggest that eating garlic regularly can help prevent cancer. It also has potent anti-fungal properties and can help treat asthma and yeast infections. Spinach Remember Popeye and Olive? Well, those cartoons had a kernel of truth in them (we’re not saying eating spinach will give you bulging muscles, but they certainly will help your health). Spinach contains an antioxidant called lutein, which helps protect

your vision. People who eat spinach are less likely to develop cataracts and macular degeneration, the two most common causes of vision loss. Tea The Chinese certainly hit a jackpot when they discovered tea. Tea has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and other diseases. It was originally thought that green tea had more antioxidants than black tea, but recent studies suggest that they are equally beneficial. The catechins in green tea are oxidized in the manufacturing process of black tea, forming free-radical fighting theaflavins. Carrots Carrots have a powerful antioxidant called beta-carotene, a member of the healing family of carotenoids. This is also found in other root vegetables like beets, sweet potatoes and yams. Beta-carotene provides protection against: cancer, especially lung, bladder, breast, esophageal and stomach cancers. Soy Soy is a favorite food among vegans, vegetarians and health freaks alike. The benefits of eating soy are numerous: it helps prevent cancer, lower cholesterol, ward off osteoporosis and lessen the effects of menopause. This is partly because soy contains Genistein and other isoflavones, which resemble natural estrogens in thev body. Studies have demonstrated that Genistein can help prevent breast, colon and prostate cancers. Additionally, soy can reduce both overall cholesterol levels and LDL (lowdensity lipoprotein or “bad”) cholesterol levels, without affecting the levels of beneficial HDL. Soy can also prevent osteoporosis and help alleviate the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes.

Whole Grains Eat whole grain cereal for a quick and painless way to get your source of antioxidants. Cereal contains Vitamin E that has been known to play a role in preventing cancer, as well as boosting immunity. Vitamin E also slows the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease, help improve the condition of arthritis and prevent sunburn. Grains are also rich in phytic acid, known as IP-6, a potent antioxidant that can help protect against breast, colon and liver cancers. What amount of food is the ORAC score based on? The ORAC values listed are based on the laborator measure of ORAC, expressed in micromoles of Trolox Equivalents per 100 grams of sample. This is important to consider when comparing something like a ground spice to say, a raw fruit. 100 grams of ground spice is likely to be much denser, and therefore have a higher ORAC value than 100 grams of a raw fruit, which would be made up of mostly water weight. http://www.oracvalues.com/

Diagnosis

Understanding Melanoma Melanoma is a cancer that starts in a certain type of skin cell. To understand melanoma, it helps to know some things about normal skin.

These basal cells divide to form keratinocytes, (also called squamous cells) which make a protein called keratin. This protein helps protect the body.

Normal skin

Melanocytes are the cells that can become melanoma. They are also found in the epidermis. These skin cells make the brown pigment called melanin. Melanin makes skin tan or brown and protects the deeper layers of the skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

The skin is the largest organ in the body. It does many different things: • covers the organs inside the body and protects them from injury • helps to keep out germs • helps keep in water and other fluids • helps control body temperature The skin has 3 layers (fig. 1): • epidermis • dermis • subcutis The top layer of the skin, the epidermis, is very thin and protects the deeper layers of skin and the organs. The epidermis itself has 3 layers: an upper, a middle, and a bottom layer made up of basal cells.

50

A layer called the basement membrane separates the epidermis from the deeper layers of skin. The basement membrane is important because when a cancer becomes more advanced, it may grow through this barrier. Other skin cancers Skin cancers that are not melanoma are sometimes grouped together as non-melanoma skin cancers because they start from skin cells other than melanocytes. These cancers include basal cell and squamous cell cancers. They are much more common skin cancers. Because they rarely spread, basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers are less worrisome and are treated differently than melanoma. They are discussed in the American Cancer Society’s document, Skin Cancer: Basal and Squamous Cell.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers.

Benign skin tumors Most tumors of the skin are not cancer and rarely, if ever, turn into cancer. There are many types of non-cancerous (benign) tumors that start in other types of skin cells, such as: • seborrheic keratoses – tan, brown, or black raised spots with a "waxy" texture, or rough surface

Melanoma most often starts on the trunk of fair-skinned men and on the lower legs of fair-skinned women, but it can start in other places, too. Having dark skin lowers the risk of melanoma. But it does not mean that a person with dark skin will never get melanoma.

• hemangiomas – benign blood vessel growths often called strawberry spots or port wine stains

Melanoma can almost always be cured in its early stages. But it is likely to spread to other parts of the body if it is not caught early. Melanoma is much less common than basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, but it is far more serious.

• lipomas – soft growths of benign fat cells

How Many People Get Melanoma Skin Cancer?

• warts – rough-surfaced growths caused by a virus

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Melanoma accounts for less than 5% of skin cancer cases. But it causes most skin cancer deaths. The number of new cases of melanoma in the United States has not changed much in the last eight years. Overall, the lifetime risk of getting melanoma is about 1 in 50 for whites, 1 in 1,000 for blacks, 1 in 200 for Hispanics.

• moles (also called nevi) – benign skin tumors that start from melanocytes • Spitz nevus – a kind of skin tumor that sometimes looks like melanoma Melanoma skin cancers Melanoma is a cancer that begins in the melanocytes. Because most of these cells still make melanin, melanoma tumors are often brown or black. But this is not always the case, and melanomas can also have no color.

An estimated 123590 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in the US in 2011 — 53360 noninvasive (in situ) and 70230 invasive, with nearly 8790 resulting in death. The vast majority of mutations found in melanoma are caused by "ultraviolet radiation.

Melanoma

Causes and prevention Sunlight and UV radiation

DNA research

Recent studies suggest there may be two ways that UV rays cause melanoma. The first way is linked to a lot of sun exposure and sunburns as a child or teenager. This early sun exposure starts a change in skin cells that may later turn into melanoma. Some doctors think this accounts for melanomas that start on the legs and trunk – areas that aren't often exposed to the sun in adulthood.

Scientists have made a lot of progress during the past few years in learning how UV light harms DNA. Changes in DNA can cause normal skin cells to become cancer. People who have a strong family history of melanoma should talk to a cancer genetic counselor or a doctor who knows about cancer genetics to discuss the benefits and possible drawbacks to genetic testing.

The second link is to melanomas that start on the arms, neck, and face. These areas are often exposed to sun, particularly in men. Tanning booths may also help these kinds of melanomas develop. Public education Most skin cancer can be prevented. You can do this by avoiding too much sun exposure and protecting yourself and your children when you are in the sun. Don't forget that sunscreen should be used to protect skin from the sun's rays during normal activity. It should not be used to allow you to spend more time in the sun. It is also important to find melanoma early, when it is most likely to be completely cured. Check your skin every month and be aware of the warning signs of melanoma. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) sponsors free skin cancer screenings around the country every year. Many local ACS offices work with the ADD to help with these screenings. Their phone number and Internet address are listed in the “How can I learn more? section.

Staging Advances in research are also being applied to staging the cancer. Very sensitive new tests can better find the spread of melanoma to lymph nodes. One type of test can find one melanoma cell among a million normal cells. This might help identify some patients who could be helped with treatments like immunotherapy after surgery. But some doctors worry that this test can sometimes suggest that a person has cancer when they really don't. So for now the test is only being used in research studies.

Treatment Immune therapy New ways of working with the immune system to fight cancer are being studied. Researchers are working on vaccines aimed at making a person immune to his or her melanoma cells. Another method is to train a person's immune cells to attack the melanoma cells. Other forms of immunotherapy are also being studied. A recent small study showed that treating patients with immune system cells found in tumors could shrink

melanoma tumors and possibly prolong life, too. Another study found that a type of white blood cell (T cells) that had their genes altered in the lab could cause tumors to shrink in a small number of patients. More studies of these treatments are being done. Molecular targeting New drugs that attack genes that are not normal are being studied. One example is a gene called BRAF. This gene is abnormal in most melanoma cells. Drugs that target the activity of this gene are being developed and studied in clinical trials. Fig. 1 Gene therapy One of the most promising new ideas in treating melanoma involves adding certain genes to the cancer cells. There are different ways that adding these genes can help to fight the cancer. Clinical trials testing gene therapy are going on now.

In one method of measuring the thickness of the melanoma, the doctor uses a device something like a small ruler. This is called the Breslow measurement. Another system describes the thickness of a melanoma in relation to layers of the skin instead of actually measuring it. The Clark level of a melanoma uses a scale of I to V (1-5) to describe which layers of the skin are involved. Higher numbers mean a deeper melanoma. Most often, the Breslow measurement of thickness is used in staging the cancer. Sometimes, though, the Clark level shows that a melanoma is more advanced than it appears from the Breslow measurement. Because of this, both systems may be used to describe a melanoma. In either system, the melanoma is said to have a worse prognosis if it is ulcerated; this means that there is no covering layer of skin.

What Are Some Questions I Can Ask My Doctor?

After the Tests: Staging Staging is the process of finding out how widespread the cancer is. This includes finding out how big it is and whether it has spread to the lymph nodes or any other organs. The tests described above are used to help decide the stage of the melanoma. Staging is very important because the treatment and the outlook (prognosis) for your recovery depend on the stage of the cancer. Stages are labeled using 0 and the Roman numerals I through IV (1-4). In general, the lower the number, the less the cancer has spread. A higher number, such as stage IV (4), means a more serious cancer. There are really 2 types of staging for melanoma. The clinical stage is based on what is found in the physical exam, biopsy, x-rays, CT scans, and so on. The pathological stage uses all of this information plus what is found during biopsies of lymph nodes or other organs. So the clinical stage (which is done first) may be lower than the pathologic stage, which is found after the biopsy. After looking at your test results, the doctor will tell you the stage of your cancer. Be sure to ask your doctor to explain your stage in a way you understand. This will help you both decide on the best treatment for you. Thickness of the melanoma The thickness of the melanoma as seen in the skin biopsy is called the “T category.” The thinner the melanoma, the better the outlook. For the most part, melanomas less than about 1/25 of an inch deep (about the size of a period or a comma) have a very small chance of spreading. Thicker melanomas have a greater chance of spreading. The thickness of the melanoma also guides the choice of treatment.

As you cope with cancer and cancer treatment, you need to have honest, open talks with your doctor. You should feel free to ask any question that’s on your mind, no matter how small it might seem. Here are some questions you might want to ask. Be sure to add your own questions as you think of them. Nurses, social workers, and other members of your treatment team may also be able to answer many of your questions. • Would you please write down the exact type of skin cancer I have. • How far has my melanoma spread within or beneath my skin? • How thick is the melanoma? • What treatment choices do I have? What do you recommend and why? • What are the risks and benefits of each? • What is the goal of this treatment? • Will I have a scar after my treatment? • What should I do to be ready for treatment? • Will I lose my hair? If so, what can I do about it? • What are the chances of my cancer coming back with the treatment you suggest? What would we do then? • Should I take special care to avoid sun exposure? • Do I need follow-up appointments to check for recurrence or a new cancer? • Should I arrange to have my family members screened? Celeb Bio

Charlize Theron

has defied all preconceptions to become one of film's most formidable talents, as adept at comedy as she is with hard-hitting drama.

58

As legend has it, Charlize Theron was discovered by an agent while fighting with a bank manager on Hollywood Boulevard. Eighteen and starving, Theron purportedly got into the argument after the manager refused to cash her check. The Prometheus outburst caught the agent's attention, and eight months later Theron got her first acting job. She subsequently went on to become one of the hottest young actors in Hollywood, thanks to a fortuitous combination of talent and the blonde, statuesque good looks so fervently adored by the camera. Born August 7, 1975, Theron was raised on a farm in Benoni, South Africa. Trained as a ballet dancer, she was sent to Milan at 16 to become a model following the death of her father (which, it was later revealed, occurred after he was shot by Theron's mother, who was defending herself from his drunken abuse). After tiring of modeling, Theron returned to her first love, dancing, which resulted in a move to New York to dance with the Joffrey Ballet. Unfortunately, her career was halted by a knee injury, which led Theron – at her mother's behest – to travel to Los Angeles to try her luck with acting. After a long, unprofitable struggle, fate smiled upon Theron in the form of the aforementioned bank encounter. Following an inauspicious bit part in 1994's Children of the Corn III, Theron won her first dose of recognition with 2 Days in the Valley (1996). The film wasn't particularly successful, but it did give her both much-needed exposure and critical praise. The film also served as the stepping stone to her first leading role, that of Keanu Reeves' embattled wife in The Devil's Advocate (1997). The film drew poor reviews, but Theron managed to win widespread praise for her performance. Her next project, Trial and Error (1997), surfaced briefly before disappearing with nary a trace, but the subsequent Mighty Joe Young (1998) netted Theron more positive notices. Her ascent was confirmed with her casting in Celebrity, Woody Allen's 1998 cameo-fest that also featured turns from everyone from Kenneth Branagh to Winona Ryder to Leonardo DiCaprio to Isaac Mizrahi. In her portrayal of a perpetually aroused supermodel, Theron shone in a role seemingly designed to allow her to flaunt her natural attributes and little else. She was rewarded with more substantial – not to mention multilayered – work in The Cider House Rules (1999), Lasse Hallström's Oscar-winning adaptation of John Irving's novel. As a troubled young woman with secrets to hide, Theron received star billing alongside Michael Caine and Tobey Maguire. In the wake of The Cider House Rules came a few highly publicized but ultimately disappointing projects, including John Frankenheimer's Reindeer Games (2000), Robert Redford's The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), and Sweet November (2001), the last of which reunited her with erstwhile co-star Keanu Reeves. Theron was also reunited with Woody Allen in his The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001), another widely anticipated film that, despite a high-profile cast and stylish period design, was both a critical and commercial underacheiver. None of this, however, nudged Theron from her A-list status, something that was confirmed by her casting in the flashy, starstudded 2003 remake of The Italian Job, a much-beloved 1969

NEW!

comedy caper starring Michael Caine. The 2003 version featured Mark Wahlberg in the starring role, with Theron, Edward Norton, Seth Green, and Mos Def, among others, backing him up. That same year, Theron switched gears and dove headfirst into the "serious actress" category with her starring role in Monster, the crime drama based upon the real-life story of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute who, in the late '80s, murdered seven men in Florida. Co-starring Christina Ricci as Wuornos' lover, the film promised to show audiences a side of Theron that certainly hadn't been hinted at in her previous portrayals of models, girlfriends, and Southern debutantes. It was evidently successful as Theron was showered with more than a dozen awards including an Oscar following her first-ever Academy Award nomination. 2005 would be a decidedly mixed year for Theron. She first appeared in the live-action adaptation of the cult animated series Aeon Flux, a film that was nearly unanimously maligned by critics and largely avoided by audiences. Luckily, she also starred in the well-received docudrama North Country. Playing a woman who successfully battled sexual harrassment, Theron was honored with her second Oscar nomination for the performance. In 2007 Theron earned critical praise for her supporting role as a detective in In the Valley of Elah, and joined the star-studded cast of The Road in 2008. Theron took a lead role the following year in Young Adult (penned by Juno collaborators Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman) as a recently divorced author who returns to her hometown with her sights set on winning back her high school sweet heart. Young Adult was received well by both box office and critical standards. 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman featured Theron as the diabolical queen pitted against the heroine, Christine Steward's character. With an Academy Award on display in her study and nearly 20 years in showbiz under her belt, Charlize Theron doesn’t usually get fazed easily. Charlize’s most recent sci-fi thriller, Prometheus, 2012, from director Ridley Scott, playing the cold but complex character of corporate representative Meredith Vickers, proved to be actually somewhat dangerous as they filmed on an active volcano in Iceland. But being decked out in a skin-tight spacesuit and running across volcanic ash near Iceland’s Mount Hekla — which scientists were monitoring for imminent eruption at the time — made filming Prometheus a new experience for the 36-year-old actor. “I have never been a part of anything like this,” the actress said. “It’s quite shocking, it’s very stark and graphic and there were jagged edges everywhere. There was a volcano that was about to erupt. . . . I think the crew had just about every ATV in Iceland standing by to roll us out of that crevice.” Whether she slows down or not remains to be seen but for sure, Charlize Theron will remain one of Hollywood’s most valuable screen actors for quite some time.

Economy

Finding the Perfect Job By Megan Sarah Johnson

The Key To Getting a Job Today Is Knowing Where to Look It’s nearly

impossible to find even one American who can say they haven’t been affected by today’s plummeting economy. Jobs continue to be eliminated, while stocks bounce up and down like kids on a trampoline. In this dwindling financial state, recently pink-slipped Americans are trying to gather their self-esteem together and search for new jobs. But where exactly are those jobs? The concept of “the perfect job” seems to have morphed into an elusive urban legend. One recently laid-off victim tells us “While there seems to be jobs posted on websites in abundance, I think the number of applicants has increased so much that it’s become very hard to achieve a response with any application. Also, because most companies prefer an online application process, the job market has become very impersonal and that makes it hard to get yourself noticed.” With so much competition gunning for so few positions, it’s extremely difficult to know where you should put your focus in the job search. So take a break from dragging yourself to Craigslist and the want ads every morning, and take a look at our detailed list of industries that haven’t been given the economic smack down. Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise. Healthcare has continued to be an ever-growing industry throughout America. While most of us can’t just drop what we’re doing and become doctors, there are many health fields that are accepting new hires. Nursing continues to be a career in demand: professions include registered nurses and certified nurses’ assistants. Home health

60

aides are taking care of senior citizens, and this need will only increase with time. Due to the revolutions in modern medicine, Americans have long, healthy lives to look forward to. With these long lives comes the need for quality health care professionals. In fact, Forbes Magazine predicts there will be 4 million new jobs in the health care field added by 2016. Consider grabbing a spot in this vital field before the rest of America does! Be Hospitable. The wise words of your mother always seem to come in hand, don’t they? But instead of referring to having guests in your home, this time we’re speaking about the workplace. Tourism and hospitality are thriving industries that constantly look for new hires. Options range from restaurants to hotels and amusement parks. No, we aren’t suggesting that you dress up like a Disney character. But behind the scenes of these locations are thousands of administrative, human resources, and managerial positions. Someone has to keep these places up and running behind the scenes! Also, if you’re looking for fast work during a search for a new job, waiting tables and chopping vegetables can be a great role for those who dread sitting behind a desk. If the typical 9-5 job isn’t for you, bartending is a popular member of the hospitality field that will never lose popularity, even during rocky financial times. Consult Your People. When people tell you they work as a consultant, do you ever say to yourself “Ummm, can you be a little bit more descriptive?” Though the name seems rather elusive, there are a variety of types of consultants, ranging from real estate and information technology to medicine and management. In certain fields, consulting can be extremely lucrative. When it comes to technology, only a select group of

people have the expertise to work as an engineer, and that means big bucks in return. Due to the economy, many companies look to bring in outside consultants to pitch in when they need it. While there are clearly downsides to temporary work such as no health care coverage or vacation time, chances are there will be a heavy per-hour salary to perk up the position. Educate Yourself. And others, for that matter. Teaching is a rewarding and challenging career that welcomes diverse populations with open arms. Not only are schools eager to hire recent college graduates, but they look very fondly on the 50+ crowd as well. As teachers continue to retire, the demand for new ones will continue to increase. In particular, the need for math and science teachers is increasing every day. With baby boomers retiring, open spaces aren’t exactly few and far between. While some jobs don’t require it, look into your local college or university’s class schedule for teaching certification classes. While it may cost money initially to receive the degree, the job security will be worthwhile for an entire lifetime. Working For The Man. Government jobs are a far cry from the image of undercover FBI agents that immediately floods your brain. The truth is that government jobs are highly sought after positions due to the extensive health care and retirement benefits. So what types of jobs fall into the government category? These could be roles ranging from working at your town hall to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Go to your town or state’s website to check for an organized listing of open positions. And if you’re one of those baby boomers who hasn’t quite left town for a cozy condo in Fort Myers, a government job could be ideal for you. Federal agencies recognize that experience comes with age, and they are eager to find educated individuals with career experience to fill their roles. Never Fail, Retail. As bizarre as it sounds, some industries thrive in the middle of a recession. Retail is one of top survivors in this under-whelming economy. While tiny mom-and-pop stores are dwindling, Wal-Mart and other “big box” stores continue to be a hugely popular business due to the onslaught of buyers searching for discounted prices. While people used to be a little more willing to spend the few extra bucks on that television or camera, they’re now finding that every little penny counts. In “big box” stores like Wal-Mart, there are a multitude of jobs that need to be filled, and they don’t all required standing at the front door with a smile (though that is definitely an option). Administrative and managerial positions are widespread, and sales roles can be lucrative as well. It may not be your dream job, but nobody’s fantasy is to be swimming in debt. The Search. While the job search isn’t particularly a process that anyone finds enjoyable, it’s important to remember that it is temporary. You aren’t going to be jobless forever. By maintaining a normal sleep schedule and keeping active, you can avoid the typical traps of unemployment like depression and anxiety. Take this chance to explore fields you always wanted to find out about. Sign up to volunteer for service organizations that spark your interest. Keeping busy is vital to keeping yourself motivated. Don’t be afraid to jump out of your comfort zone career-wise, because the next chapter is just right around the corner. While you may be used to working in a certain field, don’t be afraid to explore one of these rapidly hiring areas. With the incredible growth that is predicted in these fields for the next 5 years, jobs will spread like wildfire. Who knows, a later-in-life career might be waiting for you to take hold. Good luck!

The 10 Best Jobs of 2012 The Best Jobs of 2012 are a diverse mix of occupations that span several industries. But our top 10 are all healthcare or technology jobs that are facing significant hiring demand, providing good job satisfaction for workers, and paying competitive salaries. 10. Occupational Therapist These highly trained professionals treat patients with mental, physical, developmental, and emotional disabilities to help them learn to function independently. The Labor Department predicts this profession will grow by 33.5 percent between 2010 and 2020. 9. Computer Programmer A newly minted computer programmer might just have an associate’s degree and not a bachelor’s degree, which is the minimum requirement for other technology careers on our list. The job ranks among our top 10 for its strong job satisfaction numbers, competitive average salary, and excellent job prospects. 8. Physical Therapist This profession’s comfortable salary and good job prospects help earn it a spot on our list. But it also ranks well thanks to a nearly 40-percent increase in therapist positions projected by the year 2020. 7. Computer Systems Analyst Like a technically oriented project manager, computer systems analysts often serve as a liaison between the needs of the client and the financial and technological capabilities of a company. 6. Web Developer A Web developer will need at least a bachelor’s degree to land a job. These professionals use their knowledge of applications and HTML code to create visually appealing, intuitive, and organized Web content. 5. Database Administrator Prospective DBAs should earn a bachelor’s degree in computer science or management information systems, followed by a master’s in business administration. The Labor Department projects 30.6 percent employment growth in the position from 2010 to 2020. 4. Medical Assistant Our No. 4 pick, medical assistant, requires very little formal training and has one of the lower average salaries on our list. But it’s also one of the fastest growing, and you could use the skills you learn in the field to advance in the profession. 3. Pharmacist Pharmacy students must undergo extensive training before entering the profession. But its No. 3 placement proves that the hard work is worth it to most: This profession has excellent job prospects and one of the highest median salaries. 2. Software Developer This profession offers a perfect storm of factors for our ranking: ample projected growth, a strong job satisfaction score, and a palatable salary range. 1. Registered Nurse Nearly 712,000 nurse positions will need to be filled by the year 2020, but this always-large field is a competitive one. To distinguish yourself from other nurses seeking employment, veer away from hospital care and look to rehabilitation centers, community clinics, and schools.

Impulse Buys By Benjamin Kniss

I

t’s no wonder retailers focus on ways to entice consumers to buy on impulse. The effort of strategic placement, pricing and arrangement of items pays off in a big way at the checkout stand. 62

The C&E Buying Group estimates that around 40% of all consumer spending is made on impulse– an unplanned purchase. They can be as innocent as grabbing a soda at the gas station or as elaborate as booking a cruise online. Motivations for these buys vary–boredom, fun, emotional pleasure, distraction–but 88% of consumers purchase items on impulse because they think they’re getting a bargain. Consumers can't resist a sale. Say goodbye to six of the biggest offending impulse buys. No matter their price, buying these items impromptu is a bad idea for your bottom line.

Fitness Equipment

DVD’s

Shake Weight® anyone? How about the Perfect Push-Up®? Maybe the Wii Fit® is more your style? American households spend an average of $130 annually on sports and exercise equipment, only to have them eventually become pricey paperweights, doorstops and garage sale fodder. Buying any type of exercise equipment without a solid plan for using it, especially from a TV infomercial, should be avoided at all costs. Unless you are truly dedicated to becoming a healthier person these types of products are more likely to shrink your wallet more than your waistline.

Unless you're in college or under ten isn't likely you'll watch a DVD more than a couple times. Consumers spent $4.2 billion renting movies, in the first six months of 2011, compared to $4.1 billion buying them. The results can be attributed to the rising popularity and convenience of rental services like Netflix® and Redbox®. Generally new releases sell for close to $20 for a standard DVD and closer to $30 for Blu-Ray® discs. Purchasing just two new movies a month equals close to $500 a year for standard DVDs and over $700 for Blu-Ray discs. Over the first six of 2011 compared with the same period last year, DVD, Blu-ray and download sales dropped 17%, while rentals increased The fastest growing way to rent movies is via subscription, a category dominated by Netflix, which grew 46% to $1.6 billion. Renting from kiosks, such as those operated by Redbox, grew 40% to $805 million. Many consumers are realizing they are better off with a Netflix subscription for about $16 a month (about $200 annually) for movies both through the mail and streaming instantly, rather than spend two or three times that amount buying DVDs.

3

Brand New Car

Buying a new car on impulse can be a tragic mistake because when purchased from a dealership the vehicle will lose between 15 and 20 percent in value the first year alone. The depreciation of the vehicle begins immediately. As soon as the car is driven off the lot it is worth only the wholesale price (the price the dealership paid originally) compared to the retail price (the price you paid). Any money spent on taxes and licensing can be kissed goodbye as well. New cars sales and leases were 11.8 million last year, which is down significantly from the year high of 17.5 million back in 2001. It cannot be denied that a poor economy has had a do with the downturn in the automobile industry, but perhaps some consumers are realizing that buying a brand new car can turn into a big case of buyer’s remorse.

Convenience Stores Items

Pet stores also offer ample opportunity to make impulsive pet purchases. We've all seen the cute little puppies in a box for sale outside a local retail store. They are so adorable and it is hard to resist the impulse to adopt this new furry friend. Generally, the cute and cuddly pets like hamsters, guinea pigs, puppies, and kittens, fall into this category but don’t be fooled even lizards and other reptiles can become instant companions. Pets bought on impulse can quickly turn out to be regretted purchases because you don’t really consider what you're getting yourself into with the care and expense. Many owners become disinterested with the pet shortly after the purchase and sadly this can lead to the abandonment of the pet. Owning a pet is a big responsibility and is not a decision to be made on impulse or emotion. According to the ASPCA, a small dog could cost you up to $1,314 the first year alone. Think long and hard before impulsively buying that puppy.

If you just can’t resist grabbing a few of those juicy gossip mags at the checkout counter, realize that buying just five of these magazines a month at four bucks a pop equals $240 a year. Instead, get magazines that have coupons and/or pertinent articles with helpful information that can actually guide you to make those important decisions in your life. Health, beauty, finance, fashion and home covers are just a few of the hundreds of magazines geared toward having useful articles that inform.

The mark-up at these places can be as, Tiger Woods would say, “Huge.” Yeah, we have all had moments of weakness when we splurged at the convenience store to satisfy our impulsive desires. Impulse buys at the convenience store may feel good in the moment but will have a lasting effect on your pocketbook. The average corner store can legally markup its products anywhere from 19% for cigarettes to 236% for ice, all other item markups fall somewhere in this range. General merchandise can come with a markup of up to 53%, while purchasing a hot dispensed beverage or a candy bar can carry markups of up to 124% and 91%, respectively. Your best bet is to buy bulk and brew that cup of coffee at home before hitting the road. Benjamin Kniss began writing in 2009, specializing in business topics. He graduated from California State University, San Bernardino, earning a B.A. in business administration. Kniss is also studying to become a certified financial planner.

Last Word 5 Foods and Vitamins to Sharpen Your Memory and Prevent Alzheimer's Disease

Image/ canstoclphoto

By Mehmet C. Oz, MD and Michael F. Roizen, MD

Fond of your memory? Treasure your brain? Don't want to lose them to Alzheimer's? If you didn't hear this the first 99 times, we hope the hundredth time will do it. Here's how to nurture your mind and keep those memories: 1. Take 900 milligrams of DHA omega-3s a day. Why so much emphasis on these good fats? Your brain is 60% fat -- and half of that is DHA, which keeps your brain cells flexible, fluid, and communicating well. DHA also fights memory loss. Your body can't make DHA, so you have to get it from food and supplements. We get our DHA from algae-based capsules -- not fish oil -- to limit concerns about toxins in fish. DHA can keep your memory sharp and make your brain 3 years younger. 2. Eat plenty of foods rich in DHA. Opt for fresh or canned salmon, canned tuna, trout, sardines, walnuts, avocadoes, canola oil, and flaxseeds. Along with olive oil, these memory protectors are the only fats you should even think about eating. 3. Eat oodles of fruits and vegetables. Their nutrients are vital brain food. Exercise also acts as Miracle-Gro for memory. 4. Take 1,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D3 a day; 1,200 IU after age 60. Vitamin D3 helps blood flow to your brain,

64

among many other benefits. Check your intake of vitamin B12, as well. 5. Season your foods with turmeric. Most yellow mustard has turmeric. A daily teaspoon helps clear cellular waste from your hard-working brain. Why are we beating this drum again? Impressive new research just reinforced their importance -- especially of fruits, vegetables, and DHA -- as a secret sauce against the brain shrinkage seen in Alzheimer's disease. The study didn't just do the usual memory tests. It tracked foods, nutrients, and scanned brain sizes. Bigger brain, better memory. While you're eating more of those memory-boosting foods, be sure to avoid unhealthy ones that take a toll on your brain. Items with saturated and trans fats, or added sugars or syrups are criminals. They steal your memories, among other bad things. Boost your memory with these recipes from EatingWell.com: Grilled Salmon with Mustard and Herbs Stuffed Avocados Tandoori Tofu
