A Vintage Winter Romance, Mad Men Style Ever wish you were born in an era where women still pincurled their hair, put on their face to go to the market, and wouldn't be caught dead without lipstick and high heels? We do, too! The hit series, Mad Men, has inspired an amazing revival of mid-century styling in everything from fashion to furniture. Classic and ladylike, at the same moment fantastically sexy, the 1960's mod look is all the rage. This winter season, embrace your feminine side! Take a lesson from Betty and Joan, and fall in love with beautiful makeup and hair, so sophisticated you will feel like you emerged from a bygone era. Here's how to perfect the style! There are a few key ingredients that are the basis for every look:
• Perfectly manicured eyebrows are a must! Don't over pluck, but Do shape and define. Maybelline Expertwear Brow Liner fills. Finish with a clear brow gel. • Nothing says mid century like Jet Black Liquid eye liner with a subtle cat-eye: L'Oreal Carbon Black Liquid Liner is easy to apply and drys in seconds • 1960's hair is all about beautifully sculpted, yet touchable curls. The key to keeping your locks in place is a great hairspray that holds without being too stiff! Try Tressemme Tres Two Aerosol Hair Spray Extra Hold • Top off your lip color with all day shine. Our choice: L'Oreal's Infalliable Never Fail Lip Gloss in Petal
• Start with a creamy foundation to give skin an inner glow. Our pick: Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse (pictured on Megan in medium beige)
LOOK LOOK 1 1: This Winter season is the perfect time to try on a new, exhilirating lip color. On dull days,
a bright burst of fuscia or berry livens the spirits and can dress up any outfit! L'Oreal's Colour Riche lip cream in Sea Fleur feels smooth and luxurious. Tip from the pro: Practice applying lipstick with a small brush rather then straight from the tube. You'll have more control of your lip line and get long lasting color! To avoid feeling overly made up, keep cheeks and eyes neutral, but still polished. Get Megan's gorgeous cat eye with Cover Girl Smoky Shadow Blast Bronze Fire, and a seductive swathe of L'Oreal Carbon Black Liquid Liner! Hygiene
How Confident is Your Smile? 147 MILLION people aren’t getting the right oral care. When it comes to oral health, many households share a single product. Yet, in any given family, each member can have very different oral care needs. With all these different needs, why try a one-size-fits-all oral care solution? The following bit of guidance is here to provide you with a wealth of oral health – information you can use on your next pharmacy visit to make sure that each member of your family can get the oral care that is right for them. SENSITIVITY 66 million people suffer from sensitive teeth – but they don’t have to. Did you know that the short, sharp pain felt when hot, cold or sweet food or drink hits the teeth is caused by exposed dentin? Nerves within the tooth are triggered by hot and cold due to worn enamel or receding gums. The good news is that there’s a simple way to treat sensitivity. Build up protection by using Sensodyne® twice daily, and you could relieve tooth sensitivity in as little as 2 weeks. DRY MOUTH Have dry mouth? Waking up thirsty? Having trouble swallowing or speaking? 1 out of 4 adults suffer from dry mouth. The most common factor contributing to dry mouth is the use of medicines. Over 400 commonly prescribed drugs list dry mouth as a potential side effect. And dry mouth sufferers may have an increased risk of cavities and oral infections. There’s no reason to suffer needlessly. Don’t just sip water, treat dry mouth symptoms with #1 dentist and hygienist recommended Biotène®. EROSION 9 out of 10 dentists see signs of acid erosion. Do you or a family member love eating fruit or drinking soda? Don’t let those favorite foods soften tooth enamel. Acids in everyday foods – even the
30
healthiest ones – can erode tooth enamel. And, unfortunately, once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. Re-harden and protect tooth enamel from acid erosion by brushing for two minutes, twice a day with Sensodyne ProNamel®. DENTURE CONCERNS Are your dentures as clean as they can be? Using toothpaste, which contains abrasives, to clean dentures or partials can cause scratches in which odor-causing bacteria can grow. Avoid scratching dentures and help prevent bad breath with proper oral denture care. When used as directed, soaking and brushing dentures daily with Polident® Microclean Formula will remove tough stains and kill 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria; plus other key microorganisms found on dentures. Adhesives help even when your dentures fit well. The #1 complaint among denture wearers is food trapped under their dentures. Even well-fitting dentures let in tiny crumbs, seeds and other bits of food that can cause discomfort and irritation. Create a seal between your dentures and gums with Super Poligrip®. This will help keep out food particles* and make any dentures more comfortable. TOOTH DECAY Did you know that 215 million hours of work and school are lost each year due to tooth decay? Teeth need to be cared for like any other part of your body. With simple measures like brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for 2 minutes, this statistic could be dramatically reduced. Teeth absorb ingredients from your toothpaste every time you brush. Deliver fluoride to provide lasting enamel protection between brushing with Aquafresh® Advanced. And it’s easy to brush the front and back of teeth, but what about the surface between teeth? Surround the whole tooth with the active fluoride formula of Aquafresh iso-active®. It fights cavities front, back and in-between. •

Black is Back with
White
Iconic pairings of black and white make for fall’s most striking combinations
©sharkpixs/zumapress.com
No need to be shy about mixing black and white prints with solids. And the simple hues are a natural for taking on layers -- a vest, a blazer, leggings under a skirt, etc. When it comes to black and white prints, the bolder, the better. Just make sure to scale the print to your frame (smaller for smaller frames, larger for larger frames). In stark contrast to the season’s riot of hot color: cool-headed black and white. Mixing masculine edge with feminine flair, these graphic looks are ideal wardrobe staples.
32
© DanHerrick/zumapress.com
The freshest way to wear black and white is to pair a solid black top with a white bottom (skirts, shorts or jeans). This is a great look if you are top heavy because the black de-emphasizes your top. Tie the whole look together with understated accessories — strappy black sandals, a satin flower belt — for a feminine look that doesn’t detract from the graphic appeal.

Secrets for Sexy
Skin S
ure, some celebrities were born with amazing hair and good bone structure. But the shiny, radiant skin they show off on the red carpet? That takes hard work! Top celebrity make-up artists reveal how stars like Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez get their head-to-toe glow.
1
Add gleaming powder
The smouldering adverts for Beyoncé’s Heat fragrance shows off the curvy diva’s luminescent skin. Make-up artist Francesca Tolot used La Mer Body Moisturizer all over Beyoncé’s body. “On top of that, I brushed on L’Oreal Glam Bronze Powder and smoothed it all in with my hands.”
2
Shed some skin
To prepare Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria before big events, Los Angeles make-up artist Joanna Schlip mixes a cup of sugar and a half cup of olive oil and rubs it into the actress’s damp skin in circular motions. “Do this at home, and you won’t believe how soft your skin is afterwards,” Schlip advises. If you prefer a less DIY version, try the Caress Evenly Gorgeous Exfoliating Body Wash with an exfoliating bath mitt. Make-up artist Scott Barnes credits body scrubs for smoothing out the skin and leaving it incredibly soft.
36
3
Gently does it
On areas where the skin is thinner, such as the chest, neck, and stomach, take it easy with the sloughing. Make-up artist Jillian Dempsey likes to squirt cleanser on a Japanese hand towel for scrub gentle exfoliation. “The towels are like the world’s softest loofahs,” she says. A good one to try is Kanebo Sensai Collection Sponge Chief. If this still feels too harsh, Charlotte Tilbury, who’s done makeup for Victoria’s Secret fashion shows, suggests you use a face scrub.
4
Roughing it
5
Hold off the wax
For sloughing dead skin off extremely rough spots like the elbows, you might need something with more oomph. “I cut a lemon in half, pour course sea salt on both halves, and grind each into the elbows, heels, and knees,” says Barnes, who used this technique on Jennifer Lopez before the 2010 Oscars.
Rather use a razor for hair removal if you want your skin to glow on short notice. “I always tell my clients not to wax before a big event because it causes ingrown hairs and little red bumps,” says Schlip. “You get a much smoother look by shaving. And you’re getting a really good exfoliation, too.”
For more information and money-saving coupons go to beautyhandbook.com
6
Moisturize like a maniac
“Jennifer Aniston doesn’t use makeup or self-tanner on her legs - just moisturizer,” says make-up artist Angela Levin, who works with the actress. The secret lies in the kind of moisturizer you use and how you apply it. The richer and thicker the body cream, the better the results! Mally Roncal says, “You want something thick and yummy; if you turn the jar upside down, it shouldn’t budge.”
7
Oil slick
Body oil adds a nice sheen to the skin, but can be messy. Make-up artist Troy Surratt recommends adding a few drops of oil to bathwater, soaking and then toweling off. “It’s a great way to avoid too much slip on the skin with just the right amount of moisturizing benefits.” Alternatively, try an oil-infused body balm. We give the La Roche-Posay Lipikar Body Balm an enthusiastic, huge thumbs-up.
8
Buff on the bronze
Beautifully bronzed skin is always a hit. “I don't like to squirt self-tanner right on the skin,” says Dempsey, “If you have a dry spot, it will attach to that.” Instead, Dempsey pumps the tanner onto a round velour
puff (the kind you use for face-powder) and swirls it over the skin in circular motions. “Run the puff over your elbows and knees lightly and quickly so they don’t get too dark,” she says. For best results, she relies on a self tan bronzing mousse.
9
Glow without glitter
The biggest mistake you can make with body shimmer is to treat it like regular lotion. You want to glow, not glitter like a discoball! Look for a body lotion with soft iridescence, and test it on the back of your hand if you’re not sure how much shimmer it contains. If you can detect individual flakes of glitter, then it’s too much. To add shine to models’ skin on the runway, Tilbury uses a dry oil illuminating tan Intensifier, “Whether you are fair or dark, it will make you look like a golden goddess.”
10
Hit the high points
Highlighter on the body, as on the face, should be used only on the best points - the collarbone, shoulders, shins, tops of the thighs, and maybe the forearms. A highlighter with a slightly pink tone is neutral enough for all skin tones. So there you have it, with a proper regimen and the right tips on moisturizing your skin, these ten ways will help you glow like a goddess!

Healthy Winter Soup Lineup
T
48
here’s nothing better than snuggling up with a cup of hot, fresh soup on a chilly winter morning. We’re not talking about the canned variety, but a bowlful of ‘fresh from the stove’ goodness.
The best part about cooking hearty soups is that you can typically toss all the vegetables in one skillet and let them simmer for some time, while you are busy attending to more important matters!
Making soup is about as easy as making apple pie, and there are more recipes available for good warm soups than there are chefs in this world. Finding the perfect soup is of course, a personal preference, but the best tactic to employ is to use the meats and vegetables that are in season, namely: pumpkin, mushrooms, turkey, cranberry, cider, corn.
If you don’t have the time to cook soup from scratch, then consider using canned soup as a base and improvising.
Squash, corn kernels and pumpkins make very hearty, creamy soups. Once you have a grasp of the ingredients that are fresh and palatable, consider doing a variation with garnishes like parsley, orange juice, lemongrass, cilantro, pear, cinnamon and apple.
Enjoy the hearty flavors of this winter season!
On the next two pages, you’ll find staple recipes for pumpkin corn chowder and a tomato bread soup. Keeping the core ingredients the same, you can make endless varieties using the seasonings described above – all to suit your taste.

Pumpkin and Corn Chowder Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes Ingredients: 1 large onion, chopped 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 3/4 pounds butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1-inch pieces (4 cups) 2 1/2 cups fresh or frozen corn kernels (10 ounces; from 2 to 3 ears) 5 cups water 2 Tablespoons of Fresh Ginger, minced 1/2 Sweet Yellow Onion, sliced thin 4 Cups Vegetable Stock or Water 1/4 Cup Orange Juice 1 Cup Heavy Cream 4 Ounces Cheese (ideally Gruyere), grated, for garnish Garnish: cilantro leaves Preparation: Melt the butter over medium heat in a large heavy pot or in an oven. Add the two varieties of onions and cook until soft and translucent (about 10 minutes). Add the pumpkin, ginger, and corn. Cook for another 3 minutes. Add the stock or water, and orange juice. Bring mixture to a simmer and cook until pumpkin is soft and easily pierced with a fork (about 1 hour). Transfer mixture to a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Transfer back to the pot and stir in the heavy cream. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Sprinkle Gruyere cheese over individual portions and serve with some hearty bread.

Tomato and Crusty Bread Soup Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 45 minutes Ingredients: Four 3/4-inch- (2-cm-) thick slices peasant bread 1/3 cup (80 ml) olive oil 1 cup fresh basil leaves 3 medium cloves garlic, smashed, peeled, and sliced 1 medium onion, very finely chopped 14 large basil leaves, washed well and cut across into narrow strips 2 pounds plum tomatoes, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch (.5-cm) dice 4 cups (1 liter) chicken stock or garlic broth 2 teaspoons coarse salt, or less if using commercial broth Freshly ground black pepper, to taste Olive oil, for serving
50
Garnish: Fresh Parmesan Cheese (grated) Preparation: Heat the oven to 225째F. Place the bread directly on the middle rack of the oven. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, just to dry the bread out; do not brown. Break the bread into large pieces. In a medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat until it is hot but not boiling. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes until the onion is translucent. Add the tomatoes and bring to a boil. Cook at a low boil for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the basil leaves. Stir in the stock, bread, salt, and pepper. Return to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring and breaking up the bread with the back of a spoon, for 15 minutes. The bread should break down to a mush. Remove the pan from the heat, cover, and let sit for 10 minutes. Serve with a few grinds of fresh pepper, and drizzled with some good olive oil and fresh Parmesan cheese.

dancing, they are not only comfortable for exercise, but also sexy enough to wear out at night. My two favorite footwear companies are Very Fine Dance Ballroom Shoes for when I’m feeling classic or Gladys Franco Dance Shoes when I’m feeling edgy . I really love tan shoes because they elongate the leg and go with everything! I was born with high heels on so I love the ballroom dance shoes, but basic jazz shoes are also great if you prefer to wear flats.
What do you wear to work out? It’s all about fashion & comfort for me. I love layering clothes to be able to start warm and then peel off when needed. Fishnet tights, leg warmers to keep your calves warm, scoop neck tops that are dance inspired, and form fitting leggings and skirts make it easy to move AND to look salsa! What do you wear for a salsa dancing night on the town? Latin dancing is all about contra body movement and shaking those hips so fun skirts are sexy and make you feel fabulous. Dresses with fringe, lace, and crystals are my favorites!

Tired of the jarring reminders of tooth sensitivity? Experiencing sharp, shooting pains in your teeth when you have your favorite cold or hot foods and drinks isn’t much fun. But neither is giving them up. Sensodyne® can help you enjoy what you want whenever you want it. Here’s why.
Tooth sensitivity affects the nerves deep inside your teeth. Enamel is your tooth’s protective coating. However, when it wears away it exposes a porous area of your tooth called “dentin”. Dentin has thousands of tiny tubules that lead to the sensitive nerve endings inside your teeth. So when a trigger — that sherbet let’s say — touches those tubules, you feel the pain of tooth sensitivity.
Sensodyne soothes the nerves deep inside your teeth.
Hot and cold foods and drinks bother the nerves, causing pain
Sensodyne helps reduce pain signals from the nerve
Its protection isn’t affected by what you eat or drink. Sensodyne
contains potassium nitrate, the FDA approved ingredient that blocks pain signals at the nerve. This active ingredient enters the tubules and travels to the nerves deep inside the tooth, where its protection can’t be worn off when you eat or drink. When you brush with Sensodyne twice daily, it helps build ongoing protection.
www.sensodyne.com Ongoing protection to help you forget about tooth sensitivity.
Be sure to talk to your dental professional about sensitivity and Sensodyne.
WHO KNEW what’s good for your health may be bad for your tooth enamel? Didn’t know that? You’re not alone. Most people only think of tooth damage in terms of cavities. But a host of healthy foods and drinks—oranges, tomatoes, fruit juices and even vinegar-based salad dressings—contain dietary acids that can soften tooth enamel. When you brush your teeth, you can actually wear the softened enamel away. This is known as acid erosion. But unlike a cavity, which can be filled, once enamel’s gone, it’s gone for good.
What acid erosion can do to your smile isn’t a pretty sight. Acid erosion can literally change the shape, texture and appearance of your teeth over time, making them yellowed and discolored, with cratered chewing surfaces. Unfortunately it isn’t easy to detect in its early stages. Only a dentist will know for sure whether you have it.
Image adjusted to show clinical situation
So what can you do, aside from giving up on healthy foods and drinks, which isn’t wise? You can use ProNamel®, which is specially formulated to re-harden acid-softened enamel.
ProNamel’s optimized fluoride formula provides significant fluoride uptake to help strengthen acid-softened tooth enamel. This means that ProNamel’s optimized fluoride formulation can help re-harden enamel softened by dietary acids found in healthy foods and drinks. ProNamel is designed to help keep your teeth hard and strong; but you have to use it twice a day, every day.
Keep your teeth hard and strong, use ProNamel The #1 dentist recommended brand for protection against the effects of acid erosion
Be sure to talk to your dental professional about acid erosion and ProNamel.

Women’s H eal th
Sex What You Need to Know for a Great Sex Life by Michelle Goodman
Whether you’re single or married, unattached or committed, if you’re an adult, sex and intimate relationships are probably a big part of your life. Love, affection and intimacy all play a role in healthy relationships from childhood through old age. In our society we are bombarded with messages about sexuality from popular media regarding performance, size, frequency of sex and much more, which can make anyone question whether or not they’re sexually ‘normal.’ Some find it can be embarrassing to talk about their personal sexuality, especially any sexual concerns they may have. Sexual problems can have a ‘ripple effect’ on many other areas of your life including intimate relationships with a partner, family, work and general well being. At the same time, all of your life interactions and activities can affect your sexuality. That’s why it’s essential to be well-informed about sexual heath and what it takes to have a fulfilling sex life.
Male Sexual Problems The most common sexual problems in men are ejaculation disorders, erectile dysfunction, and inhibited sexual desire. There are different types of ejaculation disorders, In some cases, premature and inhibited ejaculations are caused by a lack of attraction for a partner, past traumatic events and psychological factors, including a strict religious background that causes the person to view sex as sinful. Premature ejaculation, the most common form of sexual dysfunction in men, often is due to nervousness over how well he will perform during sex. Certain drugs, including some antidepressants, may affect

ejaculation, and can nerve damage to the spinal cord or back. Retrograde ejaculation is common in males with diabetes who suffer from diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage). This is due to problems with the nerves in the bladder and the bladder neck that allow the ejaculate to flow backward and into the bladder. In other men, retrograde ejaculation occurs after operations on the bladder neck or prostate, or after certain abdominal operations. In addition, certain medications, particularly those used to treat mood disorders, may cause problems with ejaculation. This generally does not require treatment unless it impairs fertility. Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence or ED, is defined as the inability to attain and/or maintain an erection. Causes of erectile dysfunction include diseases affecting blood flow such as atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries); nerve disorders; psychological factors, such as stress, depression, and performance anxiety (nervousness over the ability to sexually perform); and injury to the penis. Chronic illness, certain medications, and a condition called Peyronie’s disease (scar tissue in the penis) can also cause erectile dysfunction. Inhibited desire, or loss of libido, refers to a decrease in desire for, or interest in sexual activity. Reduced libido can result from physical or psychological factors. It has been associated with low levels of testosterone. It also may be caused by psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression; medical illnesses,

such as diabetes and high blood pressure; certain medications, including some antidepressants; and relationship difficulties. When diagnosing a man’s sexual problem, your doctor likely will begin with a thorough history of symptoms. He or she may order other tests to rule out any medical problems that may be contributing. The doctor may refer you to other specialists, including a urologist (a doctor specializing in the urinary tract and male reproductive system), an endocrinologist (a doctor specializing in hormonal issues), a neurologist (a doctor specializing in disorders of the nervous system), sex therapists, and other counselors. The definition of low libido is subjective -- and defined by the person who has one. A man has to perceive his libido as low, and it has to be distressing to him. Couples need not feel they have to have sex a certain number of times a week to have a good sex life. There is the common perception that people have sex about twice a week. But assigning a number to normal frequency of sex is impossible. it’s not really important how much other couples have sex. Loss of libido Libido loss doesn’t usually happen suddenly: it can be a gradual process. Though difficult to define precisely, It is a lack of interest in sex for several months during the past year.
Frequency of sexual activity is not the best measure of sexual interest. So many circumstances can get in the way of an encounter, even if the desire is there. If you’re not happy about your loss of libido, researchers agree that it is best to grapple with these issues before they become established as routine. To help identify the early warning signs, see whether you answer the following questions true or false:
● ● ● ● ● ● ●
Touching takes place only in the bedroom. Sex does not give you feelings of connection and sharing. One of you is always the initiator and the other feels pressured. You no longer look forward to sex. Sex is mechanical and routine. You almost never have sexual thoughts or fantasies about your spouse. You have sex once or twice a month at most.
If you answered true to many or most of these questions, you may be on your way to losing sexual desire. Understanding the various causes is the first step to finding the appropriate solution. Impotence, or ED is not the same as loss of libido, but when you experience one, sooner or later you are likely to feel the other

"
as well. Only 7% of young men report being unable to keep an erection,” ED does increase with age: It’s 12% by age 40, 18% for ages 50-59; and then a sharp rise by age 60 to 25% to 30%. The good news: depending on the cause, drugs can help. Vasodilators, such as Viagra®, Cialis®, and Levitra®, enhance blood flow to the penis. Men report two major problems — anxiety about performance and climaxing too early. one in three men report premature ejaculation, while under one in five are worried about performance. In addition, job stress, lack of self-esteem, medical conditions and serious illnesses such as cancer and depression can certainly dampen any thoughts of sex. Cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes can reduce blood flow to the body, including the genitals, wreaking havoc on libido as well. Chronic alcoholism and even occasional excessive alcohol consumption are notorious for inflaming desire but impeding performance. Conditions such as thyroid disorders and tumors of the pituitary gland (which controls most hormone production, including sex hormones) can also lower libido. Medications, such as the class of depression drugs called SSRIs can inhibit sexual desire as well as tranquilizers and blood pressure medications. Illicit substances, such as heroin, cocaine, and marijuana, when used heavily and chronically, may also cause loss of libido. On the positive side, when you talk to your doctor about these issues, there are alternative drugs for depression and other conditions that may have less of an impact on sexual desire.

Certain medications, including some antidepressants, blood pressure medications, antihistamines and chemotherapy drugs, can decrease your sex drive and your body’s ability to experience orgasm.
FEMALE SEXUAL PROBLEMS If a woman has persistent, recurrent problems with sexual response or desire — and if these problems are making her distressed or straining her relationship with her partner — what she’s experiencing is known medically as female sexual dysfunction. Female sexual dysfunction isn’t uncommon — many women experience problems with sexual function at some point in their lives. Female sexual dysfunction has many possible symptoms and causes. Fortunately, they’re almost all treatable. Communicating your concerns and understanding your body and its normal response to sexual activity are important steps toward gaining sexual satisfaction. You can develop female sexual dysfunction at any age, but sexual problems often happen when your hormones are in flux — for example, after having a baby or during menopause. Sexual concerns may also occur with major illness, such as cancer or cardiovascular disease. Your problems might be classified as female sexual dysfunction if you experience one or more of the following and you feel distressed about it:
● ● ● ●
Low or absent sex drive can’t maintain arousal during sexual activity, or don’t become aroused despite a desire to have sex no orgasm pain during sexual contact
Physical conditions that may cause or contribute to sexual problems include arthritis, urinary or bowel difficulties, pelvic surgery, fatigue, headaches, other pain problems and neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis. Certain medications, including some antidepressants, blood pressure medications, antihistamines and chemotherapy drugs, can decrease your sex drive and your body’s ability to experience orgasm. Lower estrogen levels after the menopausal transition may lead to changes in your genital tissues and your sexual responsiveness. In addition, the vaginal lining becomes thinner and less elastic, particularly if you’re not sexually active. At the same time, the vagina requires more stimulation to relax and lubricate before intercourse. These factors can lead to painful intercourse (dyspareunia) and experiencing orgasm may take longer. Your body’s hormone levels also shift after giving birth and during breast-feeding, which can lead to vaginal dryness and can affect your desire to have sex.

...finally, don’t forget to make time for leisure and relaxation.

Untreated anxiety or depression can cause or contribute to sexual dysfunction, as can long-term stress. The worries of pregnancy and demands of being a new mother may have similar effects. Longstanding conflicts with your partner — about sex or any other aspect of your relationship — can diminish your sexual responsiveness as well. Emotional distress can be both a cause as well as a result of sexual dysfunction. Regardless of where the cycle began, you usually need to address relationship issues for treatment to be effective. Some factors may increase your risk of sexual dysfunction:
● ● ● ● ● ● ●
Depression or anxiety Cardiovascular disease Neurologic conditions, such as spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis Liver or kidney failure Certain medications, such as antidepressants or high blood pressure medications Emotional or psychological stress, especially with regard to your relationship with your partner A history of sexual abuse
You may need a pelvic exam, during which your doctor will check for any physical changes that may be diminishing your sexual enjoyment, such as thinning of your genital tissues, decreased skin elasticity, scarring or pain. Your doctor may also refer you to a counselor or therapist specializing in sexual and relationship problems. Female sexual dysfunction often is divided into the following categories, which are not mutually exclusive: Low sexual desire. You have diminished libido, or lack of sex drive. Sexual arousal disorder. Your desire for sex might be intact, but you have difficulty or are unable to become aroused or maintain arousal during sexual activity. Orgasmic disorder. You have persistent or recurrent difficulty in achieving orgasm after sufficient sexual arousal and ongoing stimulation.Sexual pain disorder. You have pain associated with sexual stimulation or vaginal contact.
64
Treatments and drugs. Women with sexual concerns most often benefit from a combined treatment approach that addresses medical as well as emotional issues. Occasionally, there’s a specific medical solution — using vaginal estrogen therapy, for example or switching from one antidepressant medication to another. More often, behavioral treatments — such as couples-therapy and stress management — are needed to address the cause of female sexual dysfunction. And sometimes, a combination approach works best. Communication. You can improve your sexual health by simply talking to your partner about practicing healthy lifestyle choices such as avoiding excessive alcohol. Drinking too much will blunt your sexual responsiveness. Also, stop smoking and start exercising. Cigarette smoking restricts blood flow throughout your body, and less blood reaching your sexual organs means decreased sexual arousal and orgasmic response. Regular aerobic exercise can increase your stamina, improve your body image and elevate your mood, helping you feel more romantic, more often. Finally, don’t forget to make time for leisure and relaxation. Learning to relax amid the stresses of your daily life can enhance your ability to focus on the sexual experience and attain better arousal and orgasm. Treating female sexual dysfunction tied to an underlying medical condition might include:
● ● ●
Adjusting or changing medications that have sexual side effects Treating thyroid problems or other hormonal conditions Optimizing treatment for depression or anxiety Trying strategies recommended by your doctor to help with pelvic pain or other pain problems
Treating female sexual dysfunction linked to a hormonal cause might include: Estrogen therapy. Localized estrogen therapy — in the form of a vaginal ring, cream or tablet — can improve sexual function in a number of ways Keeping a fit mind and body. Sex doesn’t just involve technique; people who are mentally and physically fit are more likely to have good sex lives. Sources: WebMD, Mayo Clinic, kidney-niddk.nih.gov, aamft.org, intellihealth.com

Bio-Oil PO Box 51210 Irvine, CA 926629-1210 August 10, 2008 Dear Bio-Oil I live in Massachusetts, and the weather last winter was trying for the delicate skin on my face. During the winter I developed a small patch of dryness on my forehead and I tried everything to relieve it. I had facials where they used expensive face creams and oils. At home, I tried gels and many name brand lotions, but nothing worked. After I saw an ad for Bio-Oil in a magazine, I figured I’d give it a try, and see if it would help with my dry skin. In only a week, I’ve noticed a difference. My face and body is soft and silky. The patch of dryness on my face is almost gone. And Bio-Oil has helped with a few scars on my leg too. The scars appear less visible. But the best thing is that the oil isn’t greasy, it absorbs into my skin so that I don’t have to worry about my clothes getting all oily. Anyway, this is a great product, and I’ve told my friends. Thanks Crystal Dawn

Diagnosis & P revention
Osteoporosis By Michelle Goodman
Osteoporosis literally means “porous bone.” If you look at healthy bone under a microscope you will see that parts of it look like a honeycomb. But if you have osteoporosis the holes and spaces in the honeycomb are much bigger than in healthy bone. It’s the most common bone disease. Researchers estimate that about 1 out of 5 American women over the age of 50 will fracture their hip, wrist or vertebrae. This means their bones have lost density and the structure of the bones become less dense and weaker. For some individuals, activities such as lifting a child, bending down to pick something up or even sneezing can cause a bone to break! Osteoporosis occurs when the body fails to form enough new bone, when too much old bone is reabsorbed by the body or both. As a person ages, calcium and phosphate, two minerals essential for normal bone formation, may be reabsorbed back into the body from the bones. This makes bone tissue weaker, resulting in brittle fragile bones that are more prone to fractures, even without injury. Causes Osteoporosis occurs when the normal bone ‘remodeling’ process is disrupted. Your bone is continuously changing. New bone is made and old bone is broken down (resorption), a process called ‘remodeling,’ or bone turnover. When you’re young your body makes new bone faster than it breaks down old bone and your bone mass increases. Peak bone mass is reached around 30. After that, as bone remodeling continues you lose slightly more than you gain.
66
Risk Factors A number of factors can increase the odds that you’ll develop osteoporosis:
• Low calcium intake. Low calcium consumption contributes to diminished bone density, early bone loss and increased fracture risk.
• Tobacco use. Tobacco contributes to weak bones. • Eating disorders. Women and men with anorexia nervosa or bulimia are at higher risk of lower bone density.
• Sedentary Lifestyle. People who spend a lot of time sitting have a higher risk than those who are more active. Anyweight bearing exercise is helpful, but walking, running, jumping, dancing and weightlifting are particularly good exercises for creating healthy bones.
• Excessive alcohol. Regularly drinking more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk of osteoporosis.
• Corticosteroid medications. Long-term use of corticosteroids
such as prednisone, cortisone, prednisolone and dexamethasone is damaging to bone. These medications are common treatments for chronic conditions such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. If you need to take a steroidal medication for long periods, your doctor should monitor your bone density and recommend other drugs to help prevent bone loss. Exercise helps reduce muscle weakness and osteoporosis risks. Taking calcium and vitamin D supplements can minimize bone thinning due to corticosteroids.

Symptoms Osteoporosis is usually not something people can feel. Often it is only after someone breaks his/her bone that they re find out. Vertebral or spine fractures may initially be felt or seen in the form of severe back pain, loss of height or spinal deformities such as stooped posture. Women can lose up to 20 percent of their bone density in the five to seven years after menopause, making them more susceptible to osteoporosis. Tests and diagnosis Doctors diagnose osteoporosis by measuring bone density. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a quick and simple test. It measures the density of bones in your spine, hip and wrist — the areas most likely to be affected by osteoporosis. It’s also used to follow changes in these bones over time. There are other tests that can also accurately measure bone density including ultrasounds, quantitative computerized tomography scanning (CT) and single photon absorptiometry. Treatments and drugs The goals of osteoporosis treatment are to control pain, slow down or stop bone loss, prevent bone fractures and minimize the risk of falls that might cause fractures. There are several different treatments for osteoporosis, including lifestyle changes and a variety of medications:
• Other medications. Long-term use of aromatase inhibitors
to treat breast cancer, the antidepressants called selective serontonin reuptake inhibitors, the cancer treatment drug methotrexate, some anti-seizure medications, the acid-blocking drugs called proton pump inhibitors and aluminum containing antacids are all associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis.
The above-mentioned risks are all factors that can be controlled. The ones listed below are risk factors you cannot change but must aware of:
• Being female. Fractures from osteoporosis are almost twice as common in women as they are in men.
• Getting older. The older you get, the greater the risk of osteoporosis.
• Body frame size. Men and women who are exceptionally thin
(with a body mass index of 19 or less) or have small body frames tend to have a higher risk because they have less bone mass to draw from as they age.
• Thyroid hormone. Too much thyroid hormone can also cause bone loss.
• Family history. If a parent or sibling has osteoporosis, you are at greater risk.
Bisphosphonates**. The primary drugs used to both prevent and treat osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Biosphosphonates taken by mouth include alendronate (Fosamax), ibanddronate (Boniva) and risedronate (Actonel). Calcitonin. Calcitonin slows the rate of bone loss and relieves bone pain. It comes as a nasal spray or injection. Hormone Replacement Therapy. Estogens or hormone replacement therapyn (HRT) is rarely used anymore to prevent osteoporosis and are not approved to treat someone who already has been diagnosed with the condition. Parathyroid Hormone. Teriparatide (Forteo) is for the treatment of postmenopausal women who have severe osteoporosis and are considered at high risk for fractures. Raloxifene. Raloxifene (Evista) is used for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Raloxifene can reduce the risk of spinal fractures by 50 percent. However, it doesn’t seem to prevent other fractures including those in the hip. Prevention Exercise Regular exercise can reduce the likelihood of bone frantures in people with osteoporosis. See above for some of the recommended exercises, Diet
• Medical conditions and procedures. Stomach surgery and
weight loss surgery can affect your body’s ability to absorb calcium as well can conditions such as Crohn’s disease, celiac disease and Cushing’s disease.
Following a diet that provides the proper amount of calcium, vitamin D and protein. While this will not completely stop bone loss, it will guarantee resources are available for your body to use to form and maintain bones.

Daily Calcium
Recommendations
Osteoporosis
Calcium is a important to build stronger, denser bones early in life and to keep bones strong and healthy later in life. Women under age 50 need a total of 1,000 milligrams (mg) of calcium (from both food and supplements) and 400_800 international units (IUs) of vitamin D daily. Women 50 and older need a total of 1,200 mg of calcium and 800 to 1,000 IUs of vitamin D daily. Men under age 50 need a total of 1,000 mg of calcium and 400 – 800 IUs of vitamin D daily. Men age 50 – 70 need a total of 1,000 mg of calcium and 800- 1,000 IUs of vitamin D daily. People who get the recommended amount of calcium from foods do not need to take a calcium supplement. Some people however may still need to take a vitamin D supplement. Sources of Calcium Food is the best source of calcium. Dairy products such as low-fat and non-fat milk, yogurt and cheese are high in calcium. Certain green vegetables and other foods contain calcium in smaller amounts. Calcium-fortified foods and calcium supplements are helpful for those who are unable to get enough calcium in their diets. Some juices, breakfast foods, soymilk, cereals, snacks, breads and bottled water have added calcium. Calcium Supplements The amount of calcium needed in a supplement depends on the amount of calcium you get from foods you eat. Taking more calcium than you need in supplements does not have added benefits and can even have some risks. The best supplement is the one that meets your needs based on convenience, cost and availability. And make sure to read the label to determine the dosage or pills to take. If you are not familiar with the brand look for labels that state “purified” or have the USP (United States Pharmacopeia symbol.) This means that the USP has tested and found the calcium supplement to meet certain standards for purity and quality. A Simple Way to Add Calcium to Many Foods A single tablespoon of nonfat powdered milk contains about 50 mg of calcium. Try adding some to:
• • • • •
Puddings Homemade cookies Breads or muffins Soups or gravy Casseroles
About two-to-four tablespoons can be added to most recipes! **Two advisory panels to the Food and Drug Administration recently recommended increasing cautionary language on the product labels of bone-building drugs taken by more than 5 million women in the United States. The FDA is expected to issue a revised label in November for the drugs, known as bisphosphonates, including Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva. The benefits of the drugs have only been proven for 3 to 5 years, not longer according to FDA members. Concerns stem from a small number of users who had suffered unusual thigh fractures or a serious jaw disease.

TOP 10
MYTHS
Keeping your bones healthy may not be at the top of your wellness list. But the following osteoporosis myths may change your mind. Myth 1 Most people don’t need to worry about osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition that causes broken bones in millions of Americans. In fact, about 1 in 2 women and up to 1 in 4 men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Myth 2 Osteoporosis is only a problem for older Caucasian women. While osteoporosis is common among white women, men and women of all races can have the disease. And while it is more common in older individuals it can happen at any age. Myth 3 You don’t have to worry about osteoporosis if you break a bone from a serious accident. Broken bones from falls or accidents are often related to osteoporosis. Myth 4 People with osteoporosis can feel their bones getting weaker. It is often called the ‘silent disease.’ Often breaking a bone is the first sign you have osteoporosis. Some learn they have the disease after they lose height from one or broken bones in their spine. Myth 5 An osteoporosis test is painful and exposes youto a lot of radiation. Experts recommend a bone density test using a central DXA (dual energy x-ray absorbtiometry) machine. It’s easy, painless and uses very little radiation. Myth 6 Children and teens do not need to worry about their bone health. Children and teens can build strong bones and prevent osteoporosis by being physically active and getting enough calcium and vitamin D. Myth 7 If you drink a lot of milk and exercise you are not at risk for osteoporosis. Even if you drink plenty of milk and exercise you still may be at risk. There are many reasons why people get the disease including family history, being small and thin, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, taking certain medications or having certain medical conditions. Myth 8 Osteoporosis isn’t serious. Broken bones from osteoporosis can be very painful and serious; affecting physical, mental and emotional health. Myth 9 Taking extra calcium supplements. Taking more calcium than you need does not provide any extra benefits. Estimate the amount of calcium you get from the foods you eat on a typical day. There’s the great chart located here to help you: http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/calcium This will help you figure out if a supplement is right for you and how much you should take. Myth 10 Most people do not need to take a vitamin D supplement. Vitamin D helps your body use calcium. If you don’t get enough vitamin D or your body doesn’t absorb it well, you are at greater risk for osteoporosis.

Your Health By Jen Cassetty, M.S. –Exercise Science, NSCA CSCS and ACSM HFS Certified Jennifer Cassetty is a sports, nutrition and fitness expert in New York City. Visit her at www.jencassetty.com.
While juggling your career, whether you’re a career stayat-home parent or 9-to-5’er, working-out usually doesn’t get to the top of your fantasy to-do list. We often realize that we should make time for the gym, otherwise we can suffer from the health risks.
Two of my newest clients are perfect examples of how people struggle with their careers and health: the first, a Wall Street exec who I’ll call Joe, and the second, a television producer who I’ll call Jane, came to me for nutrition and fitness advice. The excuses started pouring and I knew Joe and Jane were using their careers as an excuse to skip the gym. Don’t get me wrong – I believe and understand why they missed the gym, but it finally came to a point where I had to flat-out tell them that their career wasn’t an excuse to stop working out. I shared the following tips with them to help them stay on track with their healthy goals: • Book It! - Make a schedule and keep it. Schedules and deadlines were important for Joe and Jane, given their careers relied on it, so I created one for losing weight that they had to meet. Whenever they missed a workout session, they readjusted and tried to make it to the gym an extra day. • Set Reasonable Goals for The Event –There’s always a goal – a race, a trip, a wedding, a reunion, or holiday to “train for” so they can hit the gym all calendar year long and stay consistent. Falling off the wagon without the ability to find a new motivation is what fails, not being too busy. For Joe, he scheduled a photo-shoot for himself and his
70
partner on the beach two months after joining the gym, so this goal provided positive reinforcement for him to make time for the gym despite a heavy workload. • Put A Lock On It – Leave your cell phone in the locker. Jane’s a busy producer and her Blackberry was constantly ringing. I reminded her that “the” boss could reach her via email or her desk phone while she was at work and that she needed to recognize it was HER time to stay focused on her own personal goals and not be disrupted by a frantic boss worried about a deadline three days away! • Take Charge – You rule your business life, which is why everyone looks to you for answers. Wouldn’t it be great to set an example by creating a well-balanced personal life as well? The monetary and feel-good benefits of a healthy lifestyle would help you to take command over the stress from everyday challenges. My Point: Even important and successful high-powered execs need to have an ironclad plan to schedule in consistent sleep, nutritious meals and consistent time for the gym. Life flows so much easier when the basics are covered. The resulting benefits of looking good and feeling good are worth all that effort. Prioritize a good workout in your life.

L
opez’s first leading role was in the biographical film Selena, in which she earned an ALMA Award for Outstanding Actress.
Once a dancer on the TV show, In Living Color, Jennifer Lopez, often nicknamed J.Lo, is an American actress, singer, record producer, dancer, television personality, fashion designer and television producer. Early Career Breakthroughs Born July 24, 1969, in Castle Hill “Bronx”, New York, Lopez began her career as a dancer, appearing in stage musicals and various music videos. In 1990, she won a national competition and earned a spot dancing on the popular Fox comedy television series, “In Living Color,” as one of the “Fly Girls.” A series of small acting jobs followed, including parts in two more series and a TV movie, Nurses on the Line: The Crash of Flight 7, in 1993. Lopez’s first feature film was the critically acclaimed Mi Familia, or My Family, in 1995. She also appeared in Money Train (1995), opposite Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, and in Jack (1996), directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Robin Williams. Lopez’s first big break came in 1997, when she was chosen to play the title role in Selena, a biopic of the Tejano pop singer Selena Quintillana Perez, who was killed by a crazed fan in 1995. She earned widespread praise for her performance, including a Golden Globe nomination, and became the highest-paid actress in history with her paycheck of $1 million. That same year, Lopez starred in the forgettable Anaconda and in Blood and Wine, opposite Jack Nicholson. Her role as federal marshal Karen Sisco in Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight, a film based on the Elmore Leonard novel and co-starring George Clooney, further enhanced her image as a bankable movie star.
Personal Life in the Headlines Lopez was briefly married, in 1997, to Ojani Noa, a model and actor. She then had a lengthy and widely publicized relationship with rapper Sean “Puffy” Combs. In December 1999, Combs and Lopez were allegedly involved in a shooting incident outside a New York City nightclub, in which three people were injured. Combs was later charged with gun possession and bribery, as prosecutors claimed he offered his driver, Wardel Fenderson, $50,000 to say that the loaded gun police found at the scene of the crime was Fenderson’s. He was acquitted of all charges, but Combs confirmed in mid-February that he and Lopez had separated. Shortly after her breakup from Combs was made public, Lopez began dating Cris Judd, a dancer who appeared in the video for her hit single “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.” After much media speculation, the couple announced their engagement in August 2001. They were married in late September. Nine months later, the couple separated. In the fall of 2002, the star began dating actor Ben Affleck; they announced their engagement in November. Following rumors of the relationship’s demise, the couple broke up in early 2004. Lopez subsequently married singer Marc Anthony in June 2004 at a private ceremony at her Los Angeles mansion. Returning to the big stage, Lopez has found time to join forces with her husband in 2006. She acted along side him in the film El Cantante. In the film, Anthony played Hector Lavoe, the internationally acclaimed salsa singer. True to life, Lopez played Puchi, Lavoe’s wife.
Lopez’s musical career also began to take off, as she released her debut Latin pop album, On the 6 in June 1999. The album, fueled by the success of her hit single, “If You Had My Love,” went platinum within two weeks, making Lopez—along with Ricky Martin—one of the most influential examples of the growing Latin cultural influence in pop music.
In 2007, Lopez released her first Spanish language album, Como Ama una Mujer, which did well on the Latin and pop charts. She found musical success again later that same year with Brave. While the title track has received some attention, Lopez’s personal life generated more media interest. Once known for her revealing fashions, Lopez started wearing loose-fitting tops, creating speculation about whether she was pregnant. Many photos of her seemed to show a “baby bump,” but the official announcement didn’t come until November 7, 2007. Lopez gave birth to twins February 22, 2008. The baby boy and girl were the first children for Lopez and the fourth and fifth for her husband, salsa star Marc Anthony.
Early in 2000, Lopez was nominated for Best Dance Performance for her second hit single “Waiting for Tonight,” but lost the award to veteran diva Cher. In the summer of 2000, she starred in the science fiction-thriller The Cell, in which she plays a child psychologist helping to track a terrifying serial killer. The same year, she starred in Enough, a portrayal of spousal abuse.
In July 2011, however, the couple announced the plans to seperate. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lopez didn’t reveal the cause of the breakup, but said, “I loved myself enough to walk away.” With a new hit song out, the superstar refused to be deterred. “I am positive— determined to move forward with my life, bring up my babies, and do the best job I can as a mother, entertainer, and person.”
The popularity of the multi-talented Lopez reached new heights in early 2001, when her album, J. Lo debuted at No. 1 on the pop charts, while her film, the romantic comedy The Wedding Planner, shot to the top spot at the box office in its first week of release. In December 2002, she performed another one-two punch with the release of the record This Is Me ... Then and a starring role in the comedy Maid in Manhattan, which was a box office hit, if not a critical one. In 2003, she co-starred with Ben Affleck in the box office bomb, Gigli. Other projects included Jersey Girl (also with Affleck) and An Unfinished Life, in which she played a single mom taken in by her father-in-law played by Robert Redford. She also starred opposite Richard Gere in Shall We Dance?, a remake of the topgrossing Japanese flick.

Is Your Child
Impulsive? Recognizing ADHD Symptoms in Children By RealAge
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is currently the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder in children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ADHD in kids has grown. Nearly 10% of children ages 4 to17 have been diagnosed with ADHD, and diagnosis rates have risen sharply in recent years, with the percentage of children with parentreported ADHD jumping 22% from 2003 to 2007. To make sense of the growing numbers of ADHD in kids, it helps to get a better understanding of the disorder itself and how it manifests in children. ADHD in kids affects how a child’s brain processes and organizes information and manages impulses, which in turn affects his or her behavior. The condition can vary from mild to severe and tends to be more common in boys than in girls.1 If left untreated, it can make succeeding in school much tougher for a child and traveling the path to responsible young adulthood much rockier. This underscores the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. Fortunately, there’s a great deal that parents, teachers, family members, and doctors can do to help kids adjust and work around the challenges of having ADHD so they can grow and thrive in school, relationships, and other areas of their lives.2 How to Spot ADHD Symptoms in Children What does ADHD in kids look like? When gathering information to make a diagnosis, a healthcare provider will look for symptoms that fall into the following three main categories. Keep in mind that it’s normal for any young child to display some of these behaviors from time to time, which makes diagnosing ADHD tricky.
76
Symptom 1: Inattention What to watch for:
• He has trouble staying focused on a lesson, a show, a story, or a game.
• His interest in activities is short-lived, and he gets bored quickly.
• You have to repeat instructions and reexplain yourself • • • • • •
often. He seems to have trouble processing new information. He’s easily distracted by anything and everything -- even a fly on the wall. He has a tendency to lose things, like his jacket, backpack, or lunch box. He often makes careless mistakes with school work on things you know he knows. You have to hound him to finish homework assignments or chores. He has a hard time finishing school assignments and projects that require sustained concentration. He seems to be off in his own little world a lot, not tuned in to what’s going on.
Symptom 2: Hyperactivity What to watch for:
• She’s fidgety and has trouble sitting still, particularly when trying to read or do focused activities.
• She rarely plays quietly by herself for long. • She’s a constant narrator, always talking. • She springs into action at inappropriate times or places, such as running in stores and climbing on furniture.

"
Symptom 3: Impulsivity What to watch for: He has very little patience. He doesn’t wait his turn when playing with others. He interrupts others even though you’ve instructed him not to. He frequently blurts out answers to questions in class instead of raising his hand.
• • • •
A child doesn’t need to show all of these symptom types in order to have ADHD -- he or she may struggle with just one or two types. Most doctors and specialists recognize three main subtypes of ADHD categorized by the main type(s) of symptoms displayed:
• Inattentive-type ADHD: Inattention symptoms listed above interfere with a child’s daily functioning, mainly his or her ability to pay attention, follow instructions, remember details, and complete assignments and other tasks.
• Hyperactive/impulsive-type ADHD: In these cases,
children have a combo of symptoms 1 and 2, like having trouble sitting still, and are super active because of restlessness, which can lead to bursts of activity – such as running, jumping, or climbing on things – at inappropriate times. These children are often impatient and have trouble listening, waiting their turn, and not interrupting others. Impulsive tendencies may make them more reckless and more prone to accidents and injuries.
• Kids Just Being Kids?
These behaviors might sound like pretty typical kid behavior, and to a certain extent, they are. It’s normal for your child to daydream from time to time or to act out inappropriately now and then. All these things can be expected occasionally from a developing young child who’s just starting to take on more grown-up behavior and social skills. Learning the ways of the world can take time. But at what point can you start to tell whether these behaviors are signs of a larger problem for your child?
How to Tell Whether It’s Really ADHD The short answer is that in kids with ADHD, these behaviors are more extreme, frequent, and persistent -- and noticeably interfere with their relationships and their ability to learn, function, and mature. Early elementary school -- around the age of 6 -- is often a good time to tell whether these behaviors might be caused by ADHD, because it’s around the age that many kids begin outgrowing the behaviors associated with ADHD. They start getting used to being in a structured classroom setting, paying attention and listening to teachers, using self-control, and socializing more with others. While others start to mature and outgrow the behaviors listed above, kids with ADHD do not, and their actions start to stand out as problematic. At this point, it may become clear that these behaviors and habits are getting in the way of healthy development and learning and may also be causing problems at home. If your child has shown symptoms of ADHD on a regular basis for longer than 6 months, talk with your doctor. Visit www.realage.com for more information.
• Combined-type ADHD: This is the most common type
of ADHD, and in these cases, a mix of all the three types of symptoms interfere with a child’s ability to function.

Recent Accomplishments At the 2011 Emmy Awards, Julianna wons Best Actress in a Drama, for”The Good Wife” television series. Margulies stars as Alicia Florrick, a mother of two that returns to work as a Chicago defense attorney after her husband Peter’s sex and political corruption scandal. While her husband tries to recoup his image in politics, she triumphs as an attorney. Interestingly, Margulies was nominated for the Emmy last year but didn’t win. However, her co-star, Archie Panjabi, did win a supporting actress award for her performance as Kalinda Sharma, an investigator at the law firm who is Florrick’s friend in the show. Before “The Good Wife,” Margulies was best known for her work in “ER.” She last won an Emmy in 1995 (supporting actress) for her potrayal of nurse Carol Hathaway. She was the only regular cast member to do so in the show’s history, other Emmys going to guest actors. That was her first nomination, but she has been nominated seven times since, five times for ER, twice for The Good Wife. Margulies also won a Screen Actors Guild award this year for her turn as Florrick.

As a stay-at-home writer and mom, I have to tell you, there are days I just cannot keep it together. Sometimes my organizational skills get thrown right out the window when I need them the most. I would say those are the times I’m running around like a chicken with its head cut off, but that’s gross –and who can really relate to that old idiom anyway? Let’s imagine an updated version: I’m running around in circles like a greyhound on Red Bull. This week I actually got both my boys ready for their conflicting soccer practices (shin guards, water bottles, cleats and all) on time. I drive in one direction with one child and my husband drives in the opposite direction with the other. As we get out of the car, my seven-year-old points out that we left his water bottle at home. A moment later, my husband calls to tell me he and our eight-year-old are the only ones standing in the middle of an empty soccer field. Did I miss an email somewhere? Even if you don’t have kids, I think you know what I’m talking about. Did you forget to pay your cell phone bill – again? Did you miss your deadline at work? Do you keep forgetting to return your friend’s sweater? There are ways to end the madness. I may not be one to preach, but for my sake and the sake of a fullydressed soccer kid with nowhere to go, I’ve researched ways to declutter the mind. How? Three Easy Steps! Step One – (You’ll love this one) Let go of perfection. Efficient people put their highest effort into what’s most important and

give just enough attention to the rest to get the job done. For you that may mean dedicating all your attention to a project you have to turn in today and taking store-bought cookies to your friend’s dinner party. Step Two – Everyone knows part of being organized is maintaining a “to-do” list, but there’s more to it than just jotting down a bunch of wishes. Pick the three most important or time-sensitive things on your list and circle them. Do those first. At the end of the day, check your list again and prioritize for tomorrow. Speaking of lists – start your day off by checking your list. If you wait until later in the day, it might be too late and you could have missed something; believe me. Keep a paper and pen next to your bed. If you have trouble sleeping because you can’t stop thinking about what you have to do, jot it down on your paper and forget about it. It’s there for you to deal with when you wake up in the morning. Step Three – Take up the OHIO method – only handle it once. This rule applies to email, voicemail and even your snail mail. As soon as you get a message, deal with it. Put the date in your calendar, respond if necessary or file it. If it’s too time-consuming for that moment, add it to your “to-do” list. Now, forward and onward! Freelance writer Angela Forsyth is a wife and mother of two boys. She’s not always as scatter-brained as she appears here – just sometimes.
