The start of spring is always a great time to clean out the closet – getting rid of

clothes that are too worn, too tight or too outdated. And despite my best efforts I do find several items that continue to make the cut and find their way back into my closet.

There are the jeans that I have had since college. Every spring, I put them on to check to see if they still fit. I wouldn’t dare wear them out in public, but I do like knowing that I can still fit into the jeans I wore 20 years ago.

There is also the very fancy black evening gown that I have yet to have an opportunity to wear; but it gets gently put back in its proper place with the hope that maybe this year will be the year.

But otherwise, despite a few other pieces, I am disciplined about what is returned to the closet. I use the rule if I haven’t worn it in a year the chances of me wearing it are slim – so out it goes. Do you know that most women only wear 20 percent of the clothes they own? I would think among that other 80 percent it should be easy for each of us to edit out five to ten percent.

My spring cleaning doesn’t stop at my closet; I also work my way through my cosmetics. I throw out all the products that have seen better days or are beyond their expiration date.

The only item I do continuously put back is a tube of bright red lipstick. I continue to hope that one day I will feel confident enough to put it on and walk out the door. Since bright red lipstick is such a dramatic look, you need to feel very comfortable and at ease when you wear it; and, despite being the editor of a beauty how-to magazine I go for the allnatural neutral look. But since this spring is all about color, in everything from clothes to eye shadows, I am definitely going to try to add some brighter hues to my look – including my red lipstick. I feel much more prepared thanks to all of the easy tips and suggestions provided by our experts.

FROM RUNWAY TO REAL WAY After a winter that packed a real punch, it is time to enjoy the prettier days of spring.

Pack up the dull dark grays and blacks of winter and get ready to wear brighter and lighter fashions.

The designer fashion shows in New York send the trends down the runway. Then you can take these trends and wear them the real way – practical clothing for busy women. And like always there are many different fashion trends for the season, you can decide which ones you want to make part of your closet and which ones you would rather leave to the runway.

The overall theme for spring fashions is a tribute to the 1970s. Everything from wide-leg pants, high waist jeans, jumpsuits, ankle-length skirts and dresses to vintage fabrics is vogue. Thus, regardless if you embrace the spring’s trends of stripes, floral patterns or vintage the articles of clothing you find will be very much 70s inspired.

Spring is all about the reinvention of classics.

Stripes Stripes from nautical to preppy. It doesn’t matter if they are skinny, geometric, or bold this is their season. Feel free to mix patterns, i.e., a striped top with a mini-floral printed skirt. Go ahead and get stripes in bright colors to be bold. You just don’t want to be striped head to toe. It is important if you are going to wear stripes that you understand your body type. Horizontal stripes can make you look larger while vertical stripes can help to take inches off.

Vintage Inspiration From longer and more tunic type tops to crocheted sweaters, what is old is new.

Florals Flower power is definitely 1970s inspired. Many of the floral patterns donned are retro and can be found on everything from sweaters to dresses to pants.

Brights The brighter and bolder the better. Every color of the rainbow is in. After the cold and harsh winter it is time to add colors that are cheerful and vibrant. The bright colored clothes help to make bold statements without being too loud.

Sheers These lighter fabrics add a soft touch to give clothes a romantic and flirty feel.

But be careful when wearing sheer, you don’t want to have the X-ray look. Wear a solid top with something sheer over it or use it as a pretty layer underneath your blouse.

Long Skirts/Dresses Definitely an ode to the 1970s. The skirts and dresses are made of light fabrics that flow easily and help to give the fashions a soft touch and a romantic and flirty feel.

Feminine Details It is all in the details – from ruffles, patterns and prints to sheer spring, it is all about being pretty.

AWARD SEASON STYLE

Celebrities on red carpets were in abundance during this year’s award season. Each show’s red carpet gave celebrities the chance to wear a new gown, hairstyle and makeup look.

It appears that regardless if it was the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, the Primetime Emmy’s or People’s Choice Awards, the celebs’ style remained pretty much the same. It was all about gowns with simple silhouettes, very little jewelry and accessories and simple-styled hair and subtle makeup.

The red carpet showcased every color of the rainbow. Dresses ranged from royal blue to shocking pink to fire engine red.

There were also lots of white, metallic and gold styles in the mix.

The gowns were very feminine and featured different textures from ruching to feathers to ruffles. Fabrics cover the gamut from tulle to silk. The silhouettes were much more structured and feminine.

It seems that strapless, one-shoulder and plunging V-neck were the favorite styles.

Despite the vast amount of exposed décolletage, necklaces could not be found. Also, obviously absent were rings.

Accessories were very minimal. It was tear-drop earrings and simple cuff-like bracelets were found on only one wrist.

Purses were small structured clutches.

Award season hair was simple up do’s pulled back to simple ponytails or buns. If it was down it was straight or with a slight wave. Nothing was overdone and no accessories adorned the hair. The make up was also much more natural. It was used to highlight the celebs natural beauty.

Besides finding the right type of mascara and application brush for your desired look, we asked Miami-based professional makeup artist Fernando Fandino to give us a few of his favorite tips on the best way to apply mascara.

TIP 1. Start with outer lashes and sweep from root to tip. Go back and forth like you are brushing your teeth.

Continue building until you reach your desired look.

Don’t let the mascara dry between coats.

TIP 2. Always curl lashes before applying mascara. Put the lash into the curler, push down on curler and count to ten slowly then release. Do not tug or continue to open and close curler while curling lashes. Never curl lashes after you applied mascara, may cause lashes to get stuck on curler pad and when you pull off the lashes will also be removed. Ouch!

TIP 3. If you are blonde, use a brown or espresso colored mascara to create a soft look. When blondes wear black mascara, it creates a very harsh look.

TIP 4. Take advantage of the bright eye shadow colors for spring – you can use a plum-colored mascara for a nice finished look.

TIP 5. In order to create thick lashes it is necessary to do two or three coats. The easiest way is to do one eye’s top lashes then the other eye. Then go back to the first eye, etc.

TIP 6. Another great trick to avoid getting mascara on your skin – once you put on the first coat wipe the tips of your lashes with the pad of your finger.

TIP 7. For a more casual look forgo wearing mascara on your bottom lashes.

TIP 8. The bigger and thicker mascara application brushes are good when you want to create volume.

Looking to go for length and to get the lower or outer lashes go with a smaller brush.

TIP 9. Use one coating of a lengthening mascara and top it with a coat of thickening mascara for added effect.

TIP 10. Do not pump the applicator in and out of the tube as it introduces air into the tube and may cause the mascara to dry out. You should replace your mascara every six months.

There are three different approaches to reaching the ecologically creative goal: Renewing, Reinventing and Recycling.

The idea is to take one or more castoffs and either refresh their appearance so they can continue in their original use or recast them into exciting new roles.

Why Eco-Chic Decorating?

Ecology. Even though more of us than ever before are learning about the ways we can recycle in our local communities, the recycling centers and curb side pickup services we need are not yet available to all areas of the nation. And while new metals, paper, plastic and glass are often high in recycled content, there are still several materials that are not commonly accepted for recycling anywhere. These include some types of plastic, including rigid and expanded polystyrene (CD cases and foam drinking cups, for example), and some ceramic and glass items such as dishes and window gloss.

... a flea market table can be as much a focal point as any decorator accent, just by adding color to some or all of its surfaces.

When you’re looking for more storage, new furnishings or a unique gift, first check your garage and attic or visit flea markets and yard sales. After all, renewing, reinventing, and recycling will always be eco-chic.

True Colors The role of tables in home décor is usually more functional than decorative, even when their task is to hold an eye-catching centerpiece or elevate a unique lamp, but a flea market table can be as much a focal point as any decorator accent, just by adding color to some or all of its surfaces.

Cleaning Often, wiping a piece of furniture down with a clean cloth is all it really needs. If you’re simply adding a fresh coat of paint, a light sanding before you prime and paint could do the trick. However, if your piece needs more work, read the following tips before you begin.

• To remove mold or mildew from wood, mix one part household ammonia with nine parts water, then wipe surface with the mixture; wipe away any excess material.

• To remove water stains from wood, first try placing a clean, thick cloth over the stain and pressing with a warm, dry iron.

Use great care to ensure veneer surfaces do not come loose from any steam action of the iron.

If the stain doesn’t disappear, apply a paste wax with 000 steel wool, making sure to rub with the grain of the wood. Continue the wax and steel wool treatment until the appearance of the wood is restored.

If needed, refinish furniture to prepare your table for painting. Paint the entire table white and allow it to dry.

To create a field for the stars, tape off a section in the upper left corner with painter’s tape. Arrange large star stickers within the taped border, making sure the edges adhere well so the top color does not bleed under them. Sponge paint the star field blue and allow it to dry overnight. Carefully remove the stickers and tape.

Using the edge of the table as the first stripe, and spacing stripes evenly from front-to-back, tape off the flag’s stripes and sponge paint them red. When dry, carefully remove the tape.

Stripping Chemical strippers vary, so always follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding gloves and masks.

• Apply stripper to a manageable area. Put on a thick coat, and do not disturb it once it is applied.

• After the recommended time, test the finish with a putty knife. The finish should be soft and pliable.

• Carefully using a putty knife, remove as much of the finish as possible.

• Steel wool and bristled brushes often help remove the finish from difficult places.

• Some finishes require multiple applications of stripper.

• Once you have removed as much finish as possible, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning the stripper from the wood.

Sanding • Following the manufacturer’s directions, fill in any nail holes with wood putty to match the piece; lightly sand the areas for a smooth finish.

• Unless you are sanding out imperfections, a simple wipe-down with liquid deglosser is an easy way to prep a surface for priming.

• Sanding with the grain, use a coarse sandpaper to smooth any rough places in the wood, then use a medium grade, and finally a fine grade as needed.

• When working on flat surfaces, wrap the sandpaper around a wooden block to make it easier to hold.

• After sanding, wipe the piece with a tack cloth to remove any dust. If using a waterbased finish, however, use a soft dry cloth or vacuum away the dust.

Finishing • Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before applying any stain, paint, or other finish.

• Test any finishing product in a hidden spot, like the back of a drawer before applying to the entire surface.

• Relax — if you don’t like how your project turns out, simply start over with a new coat of paint!

Do-It-Yourself Crafts Mosaic Tiled Table. What You See Isn’t Always True.

Pinstripe Table. Go ahead and dress up the furniture!

This mosaic tabletop isn’t tile and it isn’t paint – it’s paper napkins, cut apart and decoupaged in place. However, the table does wear new paint beneath the artful application.

The dainty table beneath the window wears pretty pinstripes on its top. Painter’s tape keeps each line tidy while consecutive paint colors are applied.

If needed, refinish table to prepare for painting. Paint the entire table white and allow it to dry. Paint the bottom portion of the table, then the tabletop with coordinating paint colors (your tabletop color will become the grout between your paper napkin tiles). A light color of paint for the grout works best, as the decopaged napkins will become translucent.

Cut the borders from cocktail napkins, the separate the piles.

Using only the top ply and starting from the middle and working outward, position the napkin centers and border pieces of the tabletop, leaving a space between each piece.

Adhere the napkin pieces to the tabletop with a paper appliqué glue. Apply several coats of glue over the entire tabletop to seal the surface.

To make the stripes use three colors of paint in addition to the base coat of white. Use painter’s tape to mask off stripes as desired on the tabletop. (For fun, stripes can vary in width and the colors can be randomly placed.)

To make it easier, on yourself, paint the stripes with the lightest color first.

Remove tape and then mask off stripes for a second color. Repeat to add third color.

Always allow the paint and primer to dry between coats to avoid bleeding over wet colors.

Accents Made From Cheers Gone By Love the look of linens brightened by bold flowers? Haven’t any floral-print linens? Search yard sales, bazaars and resale shops for the vivid hues that were plentiful years gone by … you never know when something stunning will crop up.

Take Two for Tablecloths. Finding new ways to use materials is always fun.

Use tablecloths to dress a window with no-sew ease. For each curtain fold the short-ends of two same size tablecloths over a tension rod and secure with safety pins. Tie back the curtain with ribbons.

For the perky valance no rod is needed. Just fold a square tablecloth into a triangle and use ribbons to tie the triangle ends to nails.

The window seat is cushioned by a piece of thick foam wrapped in a tablecloth from yesteryear. Safety pins hold the cloth easily in place.

Kitchen Window Wears It Well. What’s old is new.

A ruffled balloon shade, made from a vintage tablecloth, is the focal point for a retro-red kitchen.

To make the shade, measure the inside width of your window

and multiply by two. Measure the height of your window and add ten inches. If your tablecloth is close to the width measurement, use it as is to avoid hemming the sides. Otherwise, cut your tablecloth the determined measurements and make a ½” hem along each side edge.

Press the top edge of the tablecloth 4-1/4” to the wrong side.

Stitch across the top of the tablecloth 4” from the pressed edge.

Topstitch again 2-1/2” from the pressed edge to make the simple casing.

For the ruffle, measure the width of the shade and multiply by two. Cut a piece of fabric 5-1/2” wide by the determined measurement, piecing as necessary. Make a ½” hem along one long edge (bottom) of ruffle.

Baste 1/8” and ¼” from the raw edge of the ruffle. Pull the basting threads to gather the ruffle to fit the bottom edge of the shade. Matching the right sides and raw edges, pin the ruffle to the bottom edge or the shade. Use a ½” seam allowance to sew the ruffle to the shade.

Insert a tension rod through casing. Mount rod at the top of your window, allowing 2” at top for the header. Cut two lengths of ribbon the length of the shade. Drape ribbons over rod, around to the back of the shade, and pin or tie the ends together to create the balloon effect.

Buy prepped produce. If it’s the difference between eating and not eating them, it is worth paying the extra money for sliced, diced and packaged vegetables, snack packs of fresh fruit and frozen vegetables in microwave-ready steaming bags.

Give vegetables some love. Simple steps can make a huge difference. Roasting vegetables enhances their flavor. Fast dressings made with a little oil and some citrus juice can enliven humdrum salads. Chopped garlic, cooked slowly in olive oil, makes an irresistible drizzle for almost any steamed, green vegetable.

Eat your fruits and vegetables, not because your mother told you to, but because it is the simplest and most delicious way to feel and look better.

Do vegetable prep in the morning. What takes 15 minutes when you get home at night takes less time in the morning. So trim the green beans, wash and dry the salad greens, shred the cabbage and dice the onions. You’ll be far more likely to cook the vegetables when you get home.

Liberate fruit from the dessert course. Mix diced fruit into salads and serve with grilled fish. Saute apple slices as a side dish or sandwich topping. Puree leftover fruit for a first course soup.

Add orange wedges and strawberry slices to salads. Roast the pears and toss them with bitter greens and slightly sweetened vinaigrette.

Be crafty. Make simple vegetable soups by pureeing leftovers.

Simmer packaged low-sodium chicken broth with onions and diced vegetables for better flavor. Use vegetable juice as a cooking liquid; it counts as a vegetable serving.

Now that you have some understanding of what fruits and vegetables are at their peak of freshness, here are some delicious ideas of how to go far beyond the basic garden or traditional fruit salad.

Fruits can be used to dress up meats. Take a tangy nectarine mixture to give basic pork chops a jump start.

No need to wait until Thanksgiving to create a fruit relish.

Go beyond the traditional cranberry and orange to a refreshing blueberry and cranberry relish.

And there are very clever ways to use fruits as the star of appetizers, salads or the main dish.

The idea is to realize that fruits are just as versatile as vegetables and can give any meal a new twist. One of the side benefits is that diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of some types of cancer and other chronic diseases. GRAPE ORANGE CHICKEN SALAD IN LETTUCE CUP Either as an appetizer or salad course, this low-fat and nutrient loaded dish is tangy and savory. Perfect for a nice spring lunch on the patio.

Makes 6 servings 2 cups diced cooked chicken 1 cup red or green seedless grapes, halved ½ cup thinly sliced celery ½ cup walnut halves, toasted and coarsely chopped 2 tablespoons thinly sliced scallion (green onion) 2 medium oranges, peeled, sectioned; reserve juice for dressing ½ cup low-fat Greek yogurt ¾ teaspoon dried tarragon crushed ¼ teaspoon salt 4 lettuce leaf cups In medium bowl, combine chicken, grapes, celery, walnuts, scallions and oranges. In small bowl, combine yogurt, orange juice, tarragon and salt. Add yogurt mixture to chicken; toss to combine. Divide salad equally among lettuce cups.

GRILLED PORK CHOPS STUFFED WITH NECTARINES Pork chops have come along way since the days when a dab of applesauce was the condiment du jour. A colorful fruit is a great way to upgrade this simple economical meat.

Serves four 4 pork chops, bone on salt & pepper 2 tablespoons mint, chopped ½ teaspoon dried red chili flakes 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 nectarines, sliced 1 cup mixed fresh blueberries and raspberries 1/3 cup apricot jam 1 tablespoon champagne vinegar In a mixing bowl, toss together sliced nectarines, berries, jam and vinegar. Arrange chops in a 9 x 12 baking dish. Gently stuff the chops with the nectarine mixture.

Add any remaining nectarine mixture and sauces on top of the chops. Place chops in preheated 400 degree oven for 20 minutes, or until chops reach an internal temperature of 145 – 150 degrees.

Spring is all about cleaning. It is the time that everyone promises to clean out the clutter and get organized.

1. If you have several areas to be organized, start with one. You decide which one to start with – is it the area that gives you the biggest headache, or the area that guests to your home most easily see? Whatever your priorities, select one area and stick to it. Many attempts at organization fail when the task of cleaning

up the entire house seems daunting and people give up. When you complete one area, move on to the next.

2. Allow plenty of time. Don’t expect organization to happen overnight. Depending on the area to be organized, schedule a couple of hours each day to work on getting the area organized.

3. Clean house. Once you’ve selected an area, go through the contents. Use the two year rule of thumb – if you haven’t worn it or used it in two years, it’s time to say goodbye to it.

4. Take inventory. After you’ve removed extraneous items, take a look at what remains. Does it belong here? Does it make sense to keep it here? Is there another place where you’ve got more room to keep it, another area where it would be more easily accessible for it’s purpose?

5. Look for wasted space. If you’re in need of more storage space, think creatively about additional areas that you can put to work. Prime examples, include over doors and underneath beds.

6. Keep it moving. Consider storage options on wheels to allow for greater flexibility and to help keep the clutter under control.

7. Visability. The three rules to organization are visibility, accessibility and flexibility. Choose containers that are either transparent or that you can easily label to help immediately identify the contents and will help save valuable time.

8. Accessibility. Make sure that the items you need most often are the easiest to access. Likewise, place the items you don’t need to get to often on a higher shelf or in another area.

9. Flexibility. Select a storage system that can adapt to your changing needs. This way you can reuse solutions to solve a variety of storage and organization problems.

10. Organize with color. Whether you’re working to organize the family room or striving to get your home office under control, use color to enhance your efforts. Assign each child a different colored container to keep his or her belongings. Organize projects, bills and other important papers by function and color in your home office.

The loose pieces fly everywhere and drive me crazy. Now, I swoop down the moment a new toy is opened and make a labeled Ziploc bag to keep together the many pieces of the Barbie® hairdressing set, the Legos® that build a hospital, the jigsaw puzzle pieces.

3. Anything that scatters needs a Ziploc bag. Open packages of picture-hanging nails, magic markers, Q-Tips®…anything.

4. I have a bunch of labeled little Ziploc bags filled with keys: spare keys to my office, key to turn off alarm, etc. There’s nothing more aggravating than an unidentified key.

5. I kept messing up travel toiletry bags, because bottles of sunscreen or saline solution would explode and coat the inside with goo. Now I use Ziploc bags when I travel. Not very elegant, but they do the job. If something spills, I can just get a new bag instead of trying to scrub toothpaste off the interior of a proper toiletry bag.

Whenever I get a new electronic gizmo, I start a special Ziploc for it. I label the bag with the name of the device and the date. Inside the bag, I put all the wires, disks, manuals – all the paraphernalia that comes with a new piece of equipment. I keep all of these bags in one large box in a closet. No more mysterious power cords I’m scared to toss.

Quick & Healthy Snacks for the Family on the Go There is no doubt that families are constantly on the go. Between the soccer practice, ballet class, after school activities, families are short on time for healthy eating. Here are some easy recipes of healthy snacks that are easy to prepare and perfect for taking along.

A Healthy Spring Pick Stock up on strawberries this season. With just 50 calories per cup, they are a low-fat, naturally sweet treat kids can enjoy as an after-school snack or as part of a fresh sandwich.

When you shop, choose berries that are bright red, firm and free of blemishes, says professional chef Darin Sehnert. Wash berries, then place on absorbent towels for about 15 minutes to drain the excess moisture. Store berries in the refrigerator in an airtight plastic container.

“Prepped and stored in this manner, the strawberries will last about seven days,” says Sehnert.

To savor springtime strawberries all summer long, place washed berries on a cookie sheet (not touching each other) and place in the freezer. Transfer the frozen berries to a zip-top bag and store in the freezer for up to three months, adds Sehnert.

Pean�t B�tter � Stra��erry Po��ets Put a fresh spin on PB & J by using fresh fruit in place of the jelly.

Start by halving two large whole wheat pita bread rounds. Open halves to make pockets. In a small bowl, stir together ½ cup chunky peanut butter and ¼ cup raisins. Spread mixture inside pita pockets. Divide 1 cup sliced strawberries and 2 tablespoons sunflower kernels among pockets. Serve immediately or wrap and chill for up to 6 hours. Makes 4 servings.

Pack some cut carrots or crackers, put some hummus in a Ziploc container and you’re ready to go.

Spread oats, almonds, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds and sesame seeds on a large rimmed baking sheet. Bake until the oats are lightly toasted and the nuts are fragrant, shaking the pan halfway through about 10 minutes.

Transfer to a large bowl. Add cereal, currants, apricots, and raisins, toss to combine.

Combine almond butter, sugar, honey, vanilla and salt in a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low, stirring frequently until the mixture bubbles lightly, 2 to 5 minutes Immediately pour the almond butter mixture over the dry ingredients and mix with a spoon until no dry spots remain.

Transfer to the prepared pan. Lightly coat your hand with cooking spray and press the mixture down firmly to make an even layer.

Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes, cut into 8 bars

READ TO FEED Another way to make sure your family is getting healthy snacks when on-the-go is to know how to read a nutrition facts label. This is important because you realize how many calories there are per serving, how much fat, sodium and nutrients are actually in that granola bar, dried fruit or other snacks you are providing.

Serving Size & Number of Servings The Nutrition Facts Label information is based on ONE serving but many packages contain more. Look at the serving size and how many servings you are actually consuming. If you double the servings you eat, you double the calories.

Calories This is where you’ll find the number of calories per serving and the calories from fat in each serving. Fat-free doesn’t mean calorie-free. Lower-fat items may have as many calories as full-fat versions.

Know Your Fats To help reduce your risk of heart disease, use the label to select foods that are lowest in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol. Try to consume as little trans fats as possible because it increases your risk of heart disease. To help lower blood cholesterol, replace saturated and trans fats with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in fish, nuts and liquid vegetable oils. Limit sodium to help reduce your risk of high blood pressure.

Healthy Wholesome Carbohydrates Fibers and sugars are types of carbohydrates. Healthy sources, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains can reduce the risk of heart disease and improve digestive functions. Limit foods with added sugars (sucrose, glucose, fructose, corn, maple syrup) which add calories but not other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Make sure that added sugars are not one of the first few items in the ingredients list.

Protein Most Americans get plenty of protein, but not always form the healthiest sources. When choosing a food for its protein content, such as meat, poultry, dry beans, milk and milk products, make choices that are lean, low-fat or fat free.

Nutrients Use the label not only to limit fat and sodium, but also to increase nutrients that promote good health and may protect you from disease. Some Americans don’t get enough vitamins A and C, potassium, calcium and iron, so choose the brand with the higher percentage of Daily Value for these nutrients. Get the most nutrition for your calories – compare the calories to the nutrients you would be getting to make a healthier food choice. % Daily Value The %DV is a general guide to help you link nutrients in a serving of food to their contribution to your daily diet. It is time to get real. No more excuses. Believe it or not, it is possible to have home workout gear that you will actually use that won’t break the bank. You will be able to purchase everything you need to create an effective full-body workout for under $100.

1. Free Weights $7.50 and up Choose the right weight. For muscle definition, if you can do more than 8 repetitions in a row, you’re not getting much benefit from the exercise, so increase the weight. For building endurance, do 12 or more reps with lighter weights. You probably will need two sets of free weights – one for muscle definition and one for

building endurance. Regardless, if your goal is muscle definition or endurance, the last two reps should be hard to finish.

2. Exercise Mat $15 and up Roll up mats are the more common type, cheaper and easy to store. The best mats have closed cell construction and are made from TPE (Thermal Plastic Elastomer). TPE is a fairly new synthetic rubber which is decomposable and is non-allergenic. Another thing to look out for if you’ve got a hard floor surface is that you’ll need a mat with some gripping power on the under-side. The top-side should be smooth if you are doing Pilates™.

3. Jump Rope $10 and up The most important thing about a jump rope is the length. If it’s too short you’re likely to trip. If it’s too long, you be making extra large circles with your arms, taking them out of a neutral position (keeping your elbows close to the body). Colorectal Cancer There are certain bodily functions and medical exams that we would rather not acknowledge. But there comes a time when you can’t afford to be embarrassed. This year about 148,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer; and, approximately 51,000 people will die due to this disease.

Although the disease primarily affects men; today, the average person has about a 1 in 20 chance of developing colorectal cancer during his or her lifetime. When colorectal cancer is detected early, it can often be cured. The death rate from this type of cancer has been declining for most of the past 20 years, possibly because more cases are now detected early and treatments have improved.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer among both men and women in the U.S. Colorectal cancer is when normal cells in the lining of the colon or rectum begin to change and grow uncontrollably, forming a mass called a tumor. The cancer is typically always found in the cells that line the interior of the colon and rectum. However, colorectal cancer often grows slowly over a period of years.

The colon and rectum make up the large intestine, which plays an important role in the body’s ability to process waste. The colon (a muscular tube) makes up the first five to six feet of the large intestine, and the rectum makes up the last six inches, ending at the anus.

The large intestine is a muscular tube absorbs water and nutrients from food. The rectum (lower six inches of the digestive

Typically colorectal cancer begins as a polyp, a noncancerous growth that may develop on the inner wall of the colon and rectum as people get older. If not treated or removed, a polyp can become cancer. Recognizing and removing precancerous polyps can prevent colorectal cancer.

About 10 percent of colon polyps are flat and hard to detect through a colonoscopy, unless a dye is used to highlight them.

These flat polyps have a high risk of becoming cancerous, regardless of their size.

Ris� Fa�tors A risk factor is anything that increases a person’s chance of developing cancer. Although risk factors can influence the development of cancer, most do not directly cause cancer. However, knowing your risk factors and communicating them to your doctor may help you make more informed lifestyle and health care choices.

Age The risk of colorectal cancer increases as people get older.

More than 90 percent of colorectal cancers occur in people over 50 years-of-age. The average age of diagnosis in the U.S. is 72.

Family history of cancer Colorectal cancer is more likely to develop in a person whose parents, siblings, or children have had

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) People with IBD, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease may develop chronic inflammation of the large intestine, which increases the risk of colon cancer.

NOTE: Inflammatory bowel disease is not the same as irritable bowel syndrome.

Adenomatous polyps (adenomas). Polyps are not cancer, but some types of polyps called adenomas are most likely to develop into colorectal cancer. Polyps can often be completely removed using a tool during a colonoscopy, a test in which a doctor looks through a lighted tube into the colon. Polyp removal can prevent colon cancer. People who have had adenomas have a greater risk of additional polyps and of colon cancer.

Race. Black people have the highest rates of non-hereditary colorectal cancer in the U.S., and colon cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among black people. Black women are more likely to die from colorectal cancer than women from any other racial group, and black men are even more likely to die from colorectal cancer than black women. Black people are most likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer at a younger age.

Physical inactivity and obesity People who lead an inactive lifestyle (no regular exercise and a lot of sitting) and people who are overweight may have an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

Smoking. Recent studies have shown that smokers are more likely to die from colorectal cancer than nonsmokers.

Prevention Diet and supplements. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in red meat may help reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Screening. Colorectal cancer can often be prevented through regular screening, which can identify precancerous polyps. Talk with your doctor about when screening should begin based on your age and family history of the disease. Although some people should be screened earlier, people of average risk should begin screening at age 50, and black people should start at age 45 (because they are more commonly diagnosed at a younger age). Because most colorectal cancer occurs without symptoms until the disease is advanced, it is important for people to talk with their doctor about the pros and cons of each screening test and how often each test should be given.

The tests used to screen for colorectal cancer include: Colonoscopy This test allows the doctor to look inside the entire rectum and colon while the patient is sedated. A colonoscope (a flexible, lighted

tube) is inserted into the rectum and the entire colon to look for polyps or cancer. During this procedure, a doctor can remove polyps or other tissue for examination. This is the only screening test that allows the removal of polyps, which can also prevent colorectal cancer.

Sigmoidoscopy A sigmoidoscope (a flexible, lighted tube) is inserted into the rectum and lower colon to check for polyps, cancer and other abnormalities. During this procedure, a doctor can remove polyps or other tissue for later examination. If polyps or cancer are detected using this test, a colonoscopy to view the entire colon is recommended. The doctor cannot check the upper part of the colon with this test.

Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) This is a test used to detect blood in the stool, which can indicate the presence of polyps or cancer. A positive FOBT test (meaning that blood is found) can be from causes other than a colon polyp or cancer, including bleeding in the stomach or upper GI tract and even ingestion of rare meat or other foods.

Beginning at age 50, both men and women of average risk should follow this testing schedule: • Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years • Colonoscopy, every 10 years • A Fecal occult blood test, every year Symptoms By being alert to the symptoms of colorectal cancer, it may be possible to detect the disease early, when most likely to be treated successfully. However, many people with colorectal cancer do not have any symptoms until the disease is advanced, so people need to be screened regularly. It is also possible that these symptoms may be caused by a medical condition that is not cancer. This is particularly true for the general symptoms of abdominal discomfort, bloating and irregular bowel movements.

• A change in bowel habits • Diarrhea, constipation, or feeling that the bowel does not empty completely • Bright read or very dark blood in stool • Stools that look narrower or thinner than normal • Discomfort in the abdomen, including frequent gas pains, bloating, fullness and cramps • Weight loss with no known explanation • Constant tiredness or fatigue • Unexplained iron-deficiency anemia (low number of red blood cells).

or more than 15 years, I’ve been helping people understand why they should incorporate fitness and healthy habits more and more in their everyday lives.

Exercise has been proven in several studies to alleviate stress and increase energy throughout the day even though most people initially start looking to improve their health for vanity reasons.

Regardless of the reason, I recommended to my clients that they should think about fitness wherever they are to help them absorb healthy habits more instinctually. For example, I suggest they use everyday household items as fitness equipment on days they can’t make it into the gym, or get to my sessions. This way, they don’t have an excuse to not work out and using household items keep fitness on top of their minds.

I still offer these basic tips for people looking to get a jumpstart on healthier living:

• Ab work – Ab rollers have become popular, given their ease

of use. You can use a wet rag on hardwood floor to stimulate the movement. Just make sure to roll the rag tightly so you can grip it and slide it forward and back.

• Thighs - Instead of an adductor machine you can use any

small rubber ball. Place between the knees and squeeze for 5 seconds and repeat. You can relax the knees without dropping the ball.

• Instead of using therapy/power/resistance bands, you can

easily use a towel again: put under one foot and slide out sideways (or reverse lunge) using inner thighs to pull back.

In fact, the Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health (PCPFS Research Digest, 1996) states that, “physical activity appears to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety and improve mood.” It goes on to state that, “regular physical activity may reduce the risk of developing depression.”

Beyond that trim and toned body, fitness can actually help you emotionally.

Before you begin any fitness regimen, you need to keep in mind that it’s not the amount of money you spend on equipment; it’s about whether or not you can maintain that regimen naturally.

There’s no excuse to wait because let’s face it - there are thousands of books, videos, TV episodes, preachers, trainers, and nutritionists available to “educate” you.

If you spend so much time researching the proper workout for yourself you’ll never get moving. My whole life’s work has been educating people on what they can absorb at one time while replacing the thought of “work”ing out with “fun” and “play.”

I always say it take twenty-one days to make or break a habit. So, if you’ve been living your life for a long time one way, you can’t fix it in five weeks so be patient, take your time and make steady and consistent changes that will stay with you for a lifetime.

After all – fitness is just a state of mind!

Is Your Medicine Cabinet Healthy?

We all have a medicine cabinet in our bathrooms.

You know – that box on the wall with a few shelves and a mirrored door. But do you know that it his is actually the last place you should keep your medicine?

rubbing alcohol, antibiotic ointments (which are water-based, so humidity won’t hurt them), lotions and cosmetics can be stored in the bathroom safely. Cosmetics have preservatives in them; as long as you’re not keeping them in a hot place, like near a radiator or in direct sunlight, they are OK.

The bathroom environment can make drugs – from cough medicine to vitamins to aspirin – less effective or ineffective and sometimes even harmful. “Medication has to be protected from extremes – heat, moisture, humidity, sunlight,” says Jerry Harrison, a registered pharmacist in Melville, New York. “Almost any other room in the house would be a better storage place.”

Like drugs, antibiotic ointments and hydrogen peroxide do have expiration dates, which you should heed. Lotions and moisturizers are usually good for one to two years. Signs that a product has gone bad are an unusual odor and stinging and itching when applied.

Your morning shower can reduce the effectiveness of supplies such as adhesive bandages and thermometers as well. Moisture can weaken a bandage’s adhesive and damage the computer chip in the digital thermometer. And the temperature change can register on a numerical thermometer. So you’re better off keeping them elsewhere – away from the bathroom – with your medicine.

Now you’ve got plenty of room for the basic supplies you should keep in that mirrored cabinet. Products like hydrogen peroxide,

Why is important to have a�� o� yo�r pres�riptions at one pharma�y?

“Prescription drugs are powerful medicines and there is no such thing as a minor interaction,” says Robert Finkel, a registered pharmacist and professor of pharmacology in Miami. “You need to have one centralized medication manager.”

For instance, if you go to the dentist and after a procedure he give you a prescription for painkillers and antibiotics, he may not be aware of other medications you are taking that could cause an interaction with what he is prescribing.

Another reason why it is important to have a primary pharmacist is when you choose to purchase over-the-counter medicines like Benadryl™. You may think since you can buy it without a prescription it must be harmless; but you may not realize that there are serious interactions that it may cause with other medications.

If this information is provided on a separate piece of paper instead of the label, read it carefully and keep it in a safe place. If the pharmacist gives information to you verbally, be sure to write it down. Keep over-the-counter drugs in their original packaging, so don’t throw out any important information.

Discard any medications you are not currently taking. “People have a tendency to squirrel away drugs,” says Stratis. “That makes it too easy to reach for the wrong medication by mistake, and that can be deadly.”

Check the pills themselves. Look for any change in appearance. If they are capsules, make sure none have broken open. Also note the smell. If medicine has a vinegar or sour odor, throw it out.

Look at the expiration date on all medications, prescription and nonprescription, and discard anything that has expired. “The manufacturer designates a date until which under proper storage conditions, the medicine should be effective,” says Stratis. “When that date comes, the medicine loses its potency. Sometimes it can even turn dangerous. Tetracycline, for example, can be toxic to the kidneys if taken after its expiration date.

“A primary pharmacist helps to ensure the drugs you are taking are able to do what they are suppose to do without causing any harm,” says Finkel.

Like food, makeup has an expiration date, and over time cosmetics can harbor harmful bacteria that can lead to infections. The risks are multiplied when these products are shared among friends.

Check out the dates below and find out when you should toss your make up stash.

Expiration dates – beginning from the time you first open these products: Powders and shadows: 2 years Cream shadows: 12 to 18 months Foundation: 1 year Lipstick and lipliner: 1 year Mascara and eyeliner: 3 months Makeup brushes: Clean weekly using a mild detergent Makeup sponges: Replace weekly or when sponge becomes soiled Tips for keeping your skin clean and your makeup fresh: • Smell your cosmetics, if they have an unusual odor, they may contain bacteria and should be discarded.

• Always make sure that products are closed tight and stored out of sunlight, as this can destroy the preservatives.

• Don’t use any eye products if you currently have an eye infection.

• Never add any liquids to products unless directed by the manufacturer.

• If there are any changes in color and texture, dispose of the product immediately.

• Avoid sampling makeup when possible. If you do test, never apply directly from the makeup. Instead, use a clean disposable application (i.e., cotton swab, sponge) to apply cosmetics.

• Discuss Lifestyle Choices. Are you on a diet? Do you eat smaller or irregular meals? Do you smoke or drink alcohol?

7. If you can’t sleep get up. If you are wide awake after 30 minutes leave the bedroom and do something quiet and relaxing until you get sleepy and then head back to bed.

1. Turn off the TV and computer at least an hour before bedtime – their bright lights can fool your body into staying awake. These really should not be in the bedroom.

2. Don’t fall asleep with the TV on. It may seem easy to fall asleep, but it will disturb your sleep during the night.

3. Your bedroom should be your sanctuary a retreat from noise, stress and strains. You need to make it comfortable.

4. Light can interfere with sleep. Research shows that the brain sets your internal clock according to the natural rhythms of day and night. Darkness triggers the release of your body’s hormone melatonin – which triggers your body’s need for sleep. In the morning the sun resets the body’s clock and suppresses the release of melatonin. Consider using a dimmer switch or low lighting to decrease illumination in your bedroom. This will help your body prepare for rest.

5. Set the temperature at a level that enhances your sleep comfort. Some like it warm and toasty others may prefer cool.

8. Take advantage of sleep inducing foods. Just as there are certain foods and drinks that you need to avoid, there is also a list of foods and drinks that can help you sleep better. Foods that contain the amino-acid tryptophan are on this list, including calcium-rich foods and many high-carbohydrate choices.

9. Regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

If you exercise before mid-afternoon, your sleep will reap the benefits. However, exercising should be limited to no later than 3 hours (5 to 6 is better) before your normal bedtime. Otherwise the endorphins and chemicals coursing through your body, plus the elevated brain activity, may keep you awake into the wee hours.

10. When you’re having difficulty sleeping, the more you know about what’s causing your problems the better. After all, if you don’t know why you’re not sleeping, it’s going to be difficult to overcome the problem.

Research links low levels of a brain chemical to anxiety and sleeplessness.

Does stress keep you from getting a good night’s sleep? If so, you’re not alone. In a recent survey, 75 percent of Americans reported that economic, financial, and family worries keep their minds racing when they should be sleeping.

And for one in six women, those nagging thoughts are so disruptive that they have trouble falling asleep every night of the week.

Such troubled sleepers are caught in a stress-sleeplessness trap that if left untreated will persist even after the stress subsides.

Why? It comes down to the brain neurotransmitter GABA. Think of GABA as the brain’s stress valve. It works to keep anxiety under control.

When GABA levels get low, due to factors like diet, stress and

illness, the brain simply can’t shut down, which makes it hard to keep calm.

The result: chronic anxiety and sleeplessness, making one stay awake but feel constantly exhausted.

In fact, in a recent study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, chronic insomnia sufferers had GABA levels that were nearly 30 percent lower than those of people who didn’t have sleep difficulties.

Ta�e A Nap Getting less than seven hours sleep at night triggers higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can lead to weight gain and depression. Try to grab a 20-minute nap.

S�eep-Stea�ers An Important part of any list of sleep tips is information on what to avoid if you want to sleep well. Certain foods, drinks and activities can get in the way of a good night’s sleep.

Here are the things to avoid if you want to sleep well.

1. Don’t drink caffeinated beverages. Coffee, coca cola, chocolate, many soft/carbonated drinks and non-herbal teas all contain caffeine. Avoid these in the hours leading up to bedtime.

2. Don’t eat a large or spicy meal in the evening. This is one of the tips that is often ignored. Try to eat your biggest meal of the day at lunchtime, and stick to foods that encourage the release of tryptophan or serotonin for dinner.

3. Don’t drink alcohol within four hours of going to bed.

After the initial sedative/relaxing effect has worn off, alcohol will leave you restless and unable to achieve deep sleep. It’s also a diuretic, which will cause you to make a few extra trips to the bathroom during the night.

4. Don’t watch the clock. If you lie in bed watching the minutes creep by and agonizing over how much sleep you are missing, you are only going to make the situation worse. Turn your clock so that you can’t see the face and resist checking it if you wake up.

5. Don’t smoke. The nicotine in cigarettes and cigars is a stimulant and will prevent you from relaxing enough to get a decent night’s sleep. It can also increase your risk of nightmares and other sleep disturbances. Giving up smoking is the best answer (for a variety of health reasons). Yet, if you can’t stop smoking, at least don’t smoke in the hours leading up to bedtime.

Families in the 21st century have coined a new type of travel: staycations. A staycation is defined as a vacation spent at home and enjoying all the things you’ve always wanted to do at home and playing tourist in your own city/town.

Here are some great ideas to make your staycation a great adventure for the whole family.

Gather information. Be sure to go and pick up a tourist guide to your city/town, available at most hotels or welcome centers. This guide will have great ideas of things to do and probably includes discounts and offers for local attractions, events and museums. Other great places to collect information about things to do include: look for information of things to do in your city’s weekly independent newspapers, AAA (if you are a member), travel books or Google. Another good source for local activities is to check your city/town’s parks and recreation department as well as city-related websites and your area’s visitors’ association or center.

Make a budget. There are a few things that you will want to do that you don’t ordinarily do so you make a budget of what you can spend on food and activities, just like you would if you were going somewhere out-of-town.

Turn it off. Just like you would when out-of-town, turn off the Blackberry, iPhone and computer. Don’t check your emails. Don’t fall into the trap of doing work while you are on vacation: your family will appreciate this.

She is the only child of a fertility specialist and a homemaker.

She was born in Jerusalem, where she lived until she was 4-years-old and speaks Hebrew. Her paternal grandfather’s parents died at Auschwitz during the Holocaust. She continues to have dual citizenship for both Israel and America.

This film has brought her a BAFTA Award for best actress in a leading role, Golden Globe for best actress in a drama, Screen Actor’s Guild award for outstanding performance by female in a leading role, and of course, the grand daddy of all awards, an Oscar for best actress.

Although Portman was involved in many films and theatre productions, she decided to enroll full time as a student at Harvard University in 1999. She studied psychology and for those four years she did not act except for doing a Star Wars prequel.

Her participation in Black Swan also allowed her to meet her fiancé, Benjamin Millepied who was the movie’s choreographer and a principal dancer in the New York City Ballet company.

They are expecting their first child.

It was her role as Queen Amidala in the prequel Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace in 1999 that Gave Portman worldwide fame.

Although Portman’s preparation for Black Swan included six months of five to six hours per day practicing ballet and losing 20 pounds, she did have experience as a ballerina. Portman started taking dance lessons when she was 4 years-old. In addition to ballet, she also trained in jazz and tap dancing.

Portman actually came to acting by happenstance. She was discovered at 11 years-old by a Revlon model scout in a pizza parlor in Long Island where she grew up. This led to her getting an acting agent.

Natalie Portman’s real name is Natalie Hershlag. She took her maternal grandmother’s maiden name as her stage name. She did this initially because she was afraid that there might be some backlash for her role in her first film, The Professional.

She then starred in two critically acclaimed comedy dramas Anywhere But Here and Where the Heart Is. She received an Oscar nomination for her performance in the 2004 film Closer.

Portman has said that no matter what, she will never be in a horror film. Her film being distributed now is Hesher, a Sundance-festival film. This drama is about a family that loses their matriarch. In the film, Portman puts up her hair and wears big glasses – not necessarily a beauty. The father (Rainn Wilson) is broken and distraught, while an aimless angry man (Joseph Gordon Levitt) befriends Wilson’s son. Enter Portman who may or may not have a crush on Levitt.

This spring Portman will also be seen in Marvel comic’s super hero film, Thor and the comedy, Your Highness. With her Oscar in tow, Portman will land even more roles on the big screen.

Teaching Children the three S’s of money –

SAVE, SPEND, SHARE

We all know the adage a penny saved is a penny earned.

But with credit and debit cards and cyber cash and cash machines it gets harder and harder to get your children to understand the value of a dollar.

But it is critical that children learn good money habits. Children who are not taught these lessons pay the consequences for a life-time. Most people have strong feelings and opinions about money, based on childhood experiences and values and beliefs of their families. Most often, these experiences, values and beliefs are different for each parent. It is vital for the healthy development of children that parents establish a consistent approach to teaching them about money.

Money gives people – both young and old – decision making opportunities. Educating, motivating and empowering children to become regular savers and investors will enable them to keep more of the money they earn and do more with the money they spend. Everyday spending decisions can have a far more negative impact on children’s financial futures. Here are some simple ways to help educate children about personal finance and managing money.

Help children learn the difference between needs, wants and wishes. This will prepare them for making good spending decisions in the future.

Setting goals is fundamental to learning the value of money and saving. Young or old, people rarely reach goals they haven’t set. Nearly every toy or other item children ask their parents to buy them can become the object of a goal-setting session.

Such goal-setting helps children learn to become responsible for themselves.

Introduce children to the value of saving versus spending.

Explain and demonstrate the concept of earning interest income on savings. Consider paying interest on money children save at home; children can help calculate the interest and see how fast money accumulates through the power of compound interest.

Some parents even offer to match what children save on their own.

Allowance and Spending Decisions

As soon as children can count introduce them to money. Take an active role in providing them with information. Observation and repetition are two important ways children learn.

When giving children an allowance, give them the money in denominations that encourage saving. If the amount is $5 give them 5-1 dollar bills and encourage that at least one dollar be set aside in savings. (Saving $5 a week at 6 percent interest compounded quarterly will total about $266 after a year; $1503 after 5 years; $3527 after 10 years.)

Communicate with children as they grow about your values concerning money – how to save it, how to make it grow, and most importantly, how to spend it wisely.

Take children to a bank to open their own savings account.

An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest,” said Benjamin Franklin. a portion of their savings for a purchase. This may discourage them from saving at all. You can also introduce children to U.S. savings bonds. Bonds are still a good value, costing one-half of their face value and earning interest that in some instances will be tax-free if used for a college education. Perhaps more importantly, when given as a gift, bonds will not be spent immediately, reinforcing saving and goal-setting lessons.

Use regular shopping trips as opportunities to teach children the value of money. Going to the grocery store is often a child’s first spending experience. About a third of our take-home pay is spent on grocery and household items. Spending smarter at the grocery store (using coupons, shopping sales, comparing unit prices) can save more than $1800 a year for a family of four. To help young people understand this lesson, demonstrate how to plan economical meals, avoid waste and use the leftovers efficiently.

Allow young people to make spending decisions. Whether good or poor, they will learn from their spending choices. You can then initiate an open discussion of spending pros and cons before more spending takes place. Encourage them to use common sense when buying. This means doing research before making major purchases.

MONEY GUIDE Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind as you begin to teach children about money: • Guide and advise rather than direct and dictate how the child’s money should be used • Encourage and praise the child rather than criticize and rebuke actions • Allow children to learn by mistakes and by successes • Explain to children what they can and cannot do and the consequences of violating the limits • Include all family members in money management discussions, decision making, and activities as appropriate for their age • Expect all family members to perform unpaid, routine household chores based on abilities.

• Express your desire to have things you can’t afford. Children need to know that parents say no to themselves, too.

MAKING ALLOWANCES An allowance – a certain amount of money given on a regular basis – is a great way to get kids to learn about the value of money while also learning basic money management.

How old should kids be to get an allowance?

Start as early as you and your child are comfortable. Kids often develop a very early fascination with money, so they will be very excited to have some money of their own. Kindergarten age is a good time to start.

How much allowance to give?

This depends on your own family budget restrictions and personal situation. One suggestion might be $1 for every year of age. So a five year old would get $5, and a ten year old would get $10 a week. Or start with a certain dollar amount, and increase it by $1 each year.

Or give a dollar for every grade level. So a second grader would get $2 and a fifth grader would get $5 a week. You should ultimately give an amount that is comfortable with you, based on your budget. The main point is to give children a certain amount on a regular basis.

How often should an allowance be paid?

Allowances do not have to always be paid weekly. Some parents pay their kids at the same time they get their own paycheck, which may be every other week. Others give a monthly allowance to encourage better budgeting skills.

Though, we suggest a minimum of once per week.

Should your child only make an allowance if they do chores?

This is one approach that might seem appealing, but it is often considered a mistake. Having a chore-allowance relationship is not recommended, since it takes away from the money skills that children might otherwise learn. Chores should be considered a family responsibility that should not be associated with money. Also, kids may not do their chores if they only have to give up a small allowance. The purpose of an allowance is to teach money skills, and this may be lost if it is strictly tied to chores, and if the allowance is not regular and consistent.

As a compromise, you may pay a base allowance, and let your child make additional money if they complete additional chores for the week.

What do Michael Jackson, Madonna, the rock group Queen and David Bowie have in common?

They have all served as inspiration for Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. Who? A young woman from an Italian family in New York City who started her career performing in Manhattan’s Lower East Side club scene. She is now taking the music industry by storm.

Her name even comes from the group Queen’s song Radio Gaga … Lady Gaga, the celebrity for the 21st century.

Although she just recently turned 25 (her birthday is in March), she has already sold 60 million singles, has had 6 number one songs and over a billion views of her video on You Tube. She also took home three Grammy’s this year, has 8 million followers on Twitter, 27 million likes on Facebook and appeared on the cover of the March issue of Vogue.

Lady Gaga is clearly the biggest pop star in the world. She started her career in music as a classically trained pianist. She learned to play when she was 4-years-old; she wrote her first ballad at 13 yearsold; and was signed by her first record label when she was 20 years-old.

She writes all of her own lyrics, melodies and played most of the synthesizer work on her, The Fame album, which seems to have a bit of everything.

It is described as a mix of dancepop, electro-pop, rock, disco and burlesque.

She is currently in the midst of her U.S. Tour and the world, along with her fans, are taking notice.

Using one of her fashion icons Donatella Versace, Lady Gaga also designs and makes many of her stage outfits. She is said that her goal is to use her fashions and music to create a conceptual show with pop performance art. Her goal is “shock art performances.”

Lady Gaga made Time magazine’s annual 100 most influential people and Forbes magazine’s 100 most powerful women and it’s most influential and powerful celebs.

Billboard named her the 2010 artist of the year.

If there was any doubt that Lady Gag sees herself as a performance artist, just take a look at her entrance at the 53rd Grammy Awards. She arrived in a translucent egg, carried by her “servants.” Besides wanting to make an unforgettable entrance, she said that the reason she was in the egg was because she wanted to have a rebirth. This was all likely tied to her new single Born This Way which she debuted at the Grammy Awards.

In addition to seeing herself as an artist, Lady Gaga describes herself as an activist. She designed the color (taupe) for this year’s Mac Cosmetics: Viva Glam Campaign. All the money from the purchase of the lipstick goes to fight against HIV/AIDS.

Clearly there is no doubt that Lady Gaga is a superstar; and she will definitely keep it sparkling and shining.

Journaling “A journal or diary is not a record of the happenings in your life; it is a chance to write the details about your feelings...

Oprah swears by it. And we know that anything Oprah thinks is worthwhile is something we should explore. But this type of exploration is personal and intimate … journaling.

Journaling is a term created to describe the practice of keeping a diary or journal that explores thoughts and feelings surrounding the events in your life.

A journal or diary is not a record of the happenings in your life; it is a chance to write the details about your feelings. Journal keeping is known to help with problem solving while also helping to clarify thoughts. It is a process that assists with self-exploration and personal development.

If you are wondering how to get your journaling started, select a journal. Some like to buy a beautiful book with blank pages; feeling that its beauty will inspire them to fill it with beautiful things. Others choose a plain notebook to allow for messy writing, doodles, drawings – anything that allows for free expression. Many choose the computer for recording their thoughts because they can type faster than they can write.

Through journaling you get the thoughts out of your head and on to paper which may give you insights you otherwise may have never seen. This process is known to be a good stress management tool.

Verify progress. Verify progress. It is a good idea to go back and re-read entries or journals from the past. It will give you a chance to see how much progress you have made. This is important because it helps to remind you that you are still growing and changing even when you feel stuck.

Many keep journals for specific purposes. Jim Karas, personal trainer to the stars, swears by keeping a food journal. He says that it is really the way you will lose the weight once and for all. You write down every bite. Keeping a food journal works because you are confessing what you have eaten honestly and daily – even if only to yourself. Karas believes that being really aware of what you put in your mouth will get you to shed those pounds.

Others have come to journaling through The Secret. Based on the law of attraction, The Secret emphasizes that the energy you put into the world comes back to you. You create the circumstances of your life and the choices you make everyday. Your thoughts are most powerful. Thus, putting those thoughts on paper and exploring what it is you really want from your life is the most important thing you could do in order to achieve them.

Solve problems. Through your journal you are able to record the events of a situation and reexamine it, which will help you see solutions.

The key to journaling is just to start. But if you need some inspiration, begin by writing about your dreams, where you would like to be in two years, if you could have 3 wishes or what are you grateful for.

Gain clarity. When you’re not sure what to do you may get a clearer direction of which way
