editor’s letter Dear Reader: It’s time to face this year with optimism, spunk and courage, despite the unraveling of the economy. This issue celebrates that hope. Spring is all about entertaining the thought of color even with ice and frost surrounding you. On the fashion front, we’ve given you some key, gorgeous looks and color palettes to keep you up to date. Hot pink is in the spotlight this spring: this means hot pink lips and bold tanks and jackets. We have an array of key makeup trends too, from shimmering pink-tinted cheek blush to multi-hued eye shadows and mascaras. And of course, we have not forgotten that teenagers are prepping for the prom – we’ve got them covered in a feature that will take them from plain to glam in a matter of seconds. If you have spring cleaning on your mind, take a cue from our Home feature and turn your home into a sparkling haven without much fuss. Engage yourself and your kids in a delightful, funfilled furniture stenciling project. If you’re looking for safe investments, think Uncle Sam. We have highlighted some really solid, guaranteed investment opportunities that will guard your nest egg as fiercely as Batman – so you can sleep at night. On the health front, we discuss the power of antioxidants and the concept of free radicals. If you happen to be one of the millions of people who suffer from back pain, try the muscle bulding exercises we’ve featured in our Fitness section. Our cover girl, Jennifer Aniston, has battled successes and huge disappointments over the past few years as she’s blossomed into America’s sweetheart. Read more about the former Friends star in Celeb View. DenTek ® has recently commissioned an independent clinical trial performed by a well-known clinical investigator. DenTek ® Mint Floss Picks were tested against tradidtional rolled floss from a leading floss manufacturer. When used in accordance with their instructions, test results showed that DenTek ® Floss Picks performed as well as rolled floss in the removal of detal plaque. The published study is available for download.

Thank you for picking up this issue – the product of many hours of effort and collaboration. I hope you love it! Above all, please take time to stop and smell the daffodils as spring approaches.

Romancing the

Color Irreverence and Relaxed Fit Rule It’s a new season, and new rules apply. The boring spring of previous years (think florals, lace, sweet and innocent patterns) can be shelved for future use. The new season is all about using color as bright accessories, wearing relaxed fit pants and mixing and matching textures. No one has the Ten Commandments of any seasonal style, but from what we’ve seen on the runways and store trends, here are some dos and don’ts for spring: 1. Wear colorblock prints and avoid cute, floral dresses. 2. Be hip and sport relaxed fit pants and slouchy bags. 3. Invest in a nice, smart trench coat for inclement weather. 4. Go crazy and mix and match patterns. Yes, we’re talking about mixing polka dots with stripes! 5. Black and white dresses are a definite do. 6. Wear oversize jewelry! This includes necklaces, bracelets and bangles. 7. For evening wear, it’s all about pastel or light gray shades accessorized with sequins or studs. 8. Monochromatic prints (all one color, or different shades of the same color) are in vogue. Jen Fellows WARDROBE STYLING CASEY LUM MAKEUP AND HAIR DEBBIE RAMOS MODELS AIMEE AND SUZIE PHOTOGRAPHY

Romance the Color

Colorblock patterns are in vogue, so use them to your advantage. Pair a busily patterned dress with a solid and stylish trench to weather those rainy days. Another style that is rapidly becoming popular and trendy is dressing in monochromatic colors. For example, wear a skirt in pale pink, a blouse in hot pink and wear baby pink colored shoes. While this may seem like a boring technique, the results can be pretty stunning. BCBG Colorblock Dress: Macy’s Trench: Vintage

Celeb View

The Bold and the Beautiful If you take a look at the collections and palettes for the spring, you’ll find bright colors and eye-popping shades everywhere.

Trend Alert Celebrities have been sporting this trend for several months now, and have painted the red carpet wearing shades from bright orange to canary yellow. Can both pale and dark skins pull off these colors? Absolutely. The trick is to wear the colors with confidence. Once you have a bright dress on, there is no need for accessories. You can pretty much rule out heavy gold and glittering jewelry unless you want to be made fun of. What the red carpet has seen over the past several months are bright, solid shades that were previously “taboo” or “gaudy.” The way the stars wear these shades is important: they use their hair as accessories and dress it up (either in a bun, or with loose curls) and barely wear any other piece of jewelry. Some actresses are choosing to wear these louder colors on printed, more feminine dresses. This spring is the perfect time to experiment with bold colors. Be bold and beautiful and you’ll feel the world is your red carpet. 26

Prom Queen It’s time for the “big day” for prom-bound teenagers across the country. And yes, this special day takes preparation, but it’s not as hard as some might think. While chaperoning may be the biggest concern for parents on prom night, getting ready and perfectly primed shouldn’t be. In the following pages, we’ll give your teen the tips on how to glam up hair, skin and nails to get gorgeous for the big night.

style

A glowing prom face starts with good, clear skin. If you have acne prone skin as many teenagers do, use a cleanser like Clean & Clear Morning Burst that energizes as well as thoroughly cleanses without stripping the skin clean of oils. Follow up with an oil-free moisturizer like Clean & Clear’s Morning Glow Moisturizer. The trick to getting that beautiful skin is to start prepping weeks in advance when it comes to skincare. Olay-Pro X is ideal for mature skins but perfectly suitable for younger skins as well. Use their Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30 as a day cream and their Eye Recovery Complex to remove any dark circles. Don’t forget about your body! The skin needs to be moisturized and supple – soft to touch. An excellent moisturizer is Dove Cream Oil Intensive Body Lotion. Remember, your skin is like a dress, so take good care of it.

31

Prom Queen Having nails that gleam like gems can serve as perfect accessories for the big night. Choose from a range of spring shades including crimson, blue, violet and neon pink. This season doesn’t dictate that you match your nail color with your dress, so you can afford to be a little wild when it comes to choice of color. Remember to apply a good base coat and then strengthen the nails with a good top coat and fast drying liquid.

Prom Queen After you’ve set your hair in curlers (for at least an hour), you can undo them to let your long, curly hair flow. An alternative to using curlers is to use a curling iron. Use Goody hair accessories to decorate your tresses. Goody Luxe makes some gorgeous pieces that look like they cost a fortune but they’re only $6! Finish your outfit with the right jewelry…this includes bracelets, rings and necklaces. Spritz on some perfume and you’re ready to put on your gown, heels and paint the prom red!

34

35

Prom Queen Multitask if you’re short on time! If you want beautiful, curly hair (which is very effective for updos), set your hair in curlers as you apply your makeup. Covergirl’s Outlast Lipstain is a long-lasting lipstick that is great for a long evening at the prom. It does highlight every flaw on the pout though, so make sure your lips are thoroughly exfoliated before you apply it. Finish off with Milani’s Buzzworthy lipglosses in a shade that complements your gown. A lovely mascara like Maybelline’s Lash Stiletto is a good bet for your eyelashes. You want them to look like they’re a mile long without looking false. For that perfect lash, use a eyelash primer like Revlon’s lash Fantasy with it’s dual ended primer/ mascara combination.

his upcoming season features a fair mix of bright pinks, steels and browns to give you a diverse sampling of colors. There’s no question that pink and rose are the hottest colors for your lips (We’re crazy about the gorgeous matte shades that are perfect for your pucker.) And check out the pinks, steels, and brown eyeshadows that will accent those peepers better than any shade of color contact lenses!

Nursery Rhymes Chest Method

what the final piece will look like.

First, make sure the chest is clean and dry. Ideally, you will work with furniture that has a solid background in a pastel shade or white color. You can definitely stencil on a wooden chest, but make sure it is sanded down and there are no uneven surfaces.

When you have a sense of what colors and arrangements will work for you, it’s time to get down to business and start this project!

To nail this project on the head, we recommend that you plan out the stencils on paper and find the color palette that really works for you. Kids will love this! Just place the stencils on blank sheets of paper, then use crayons or colored pencils that closely resemble the colors of the paint you’d like to use. Once you’ve finished this, you can place the papers on the actual piece of furniture so you will get an idea of 60

Put 2” painters tape on all four sides of the surface you are going to stencil. Make sure the tape is flush with the edge of the chest. You’ll need to do this to make sure the stencils are snug below the tape so no paint spills over to the edges of the chest. Spray the back of stencils with Krylon Easy-Tack Repositionable Adhesive® (preferably outdoors) and place them in position on chest. (Press them all over to make good contact; this helps keep paint from seeping under stencil for a clean result).

Put a dab of paint on a paper plate. Use a small stencil brush to get a tiny amount of paint (remember, two light coats is better than one heavy coat) so that it doesn’t leak under the stencil. Lightly pounce up and down in the stencil area and make sure you do all of one color first. When you finish painting, 62

gently remove stencils. Do touch-ups, if you wish, with a small watercolor brush. For added durability spray the top of the furniture with Krylon’s Clear Polyurethane Spray (outdoors or in a well-ventilated area). Now, you’re all set to enjoy a lifetime with your gorgeous piece of newly renovated furniture!

Everything’s Coming Up Roses

There has been so much written about the perfection of the rose, which is probably the most well-known and beloved flower of generations. “Love is much like a wild rose, beautiful and calm, but willing to draw blood in its defense.” Mark Overby “You are responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery “There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted.” Henri Matisse As spring arrives, the mind thinks of a beautiful, flower-filled garden. And what says spring more than roses? Every time one passes by a garden filled with red, pink, white roses, the only thought that can go through the mind is, “What exceptional taste.” Growing roses requires passion and persistence, as any passionate rose grower knows. Apart from encountering the proverbial thorn, growing roses takes patience, skill and care.

Myth Versus Fact Myth: Growing roses is really for the pros. Fact: This is not true. Anyone can grow roses. Myth: You need all sorts of pesticides, fertilizers to grow roses properly. Fact: Untrue. You can grow roses with good watering habits and ensuring the plants have enough sun exposure. Types of Roses When most people think of a “rose” they’re thinking of the Hybrid Tea variety. A typical hybrid tea flower is pretty large, and has several petals and a large center. This particular variety came down from China, and they prefer tropical climates the best. Of course since many of you are residing in areas that can get very cold, there are some hardy varieties that can withstand the frigid winters. These include the creamy pink lemon-edged “Peace” flower or the coral “Tropicana.” Hybrid teas actually mix very well with other roses and plants, and they look compact in a bed. Other types of roses that will grow well include Floribundas 65

images/ istockphoto.com Other types of roses that will grow well include Floribundas (hardier and more disease resistant); and Grandifloras (they are big and vigorous, if you have the space for it). Grandifloras like “Queen Elizabeth” and “Sonia” are vigorous, lovely bushes that will last for years to come. If you have trellises or fences you want to cover with roses, choose the climbing roses variety. But if you are expecting flexible vines, you’ll be disappointed. Climbing roses have stiff canes and the only aid they have to hook onto things is their thorns. Soil

Fertilizing Your Roses The more you lavish attention and care on your plants, the better they will reward you with gorgeous flowers. Fertilization may sound like hard work, but it really isn’t. Water is the key fertilizer (sound surprised?!) and gives the plants much better growth opportunity than chemicallytreated rose foods. Other safe foods to feed your plant include seakelp and Canola meal. All you need to do is to apply fertilizers as soon as you plant the rose bushes and then leave them. There’s no need to over fertilize the plants.

There is no need to fret. Roses will tolerate a wide variety of soils, but they tend to do better in clay soils than sandy ones because of the moisture content. Remember that the ideal soil is compost-rich: add manure, moistened peat moss, leaf mold, ground bark as and when needed. The richer the soil, the more vibrant the roses. If the soil is very acidic, you may need to add more lime. Remember to weed your roses frequently! Try to remove the weeds by their actual roots, and not their tops. Avoid herbicides since roses are very sensitive to them.

Pests & Mildew

Remember that roses have long roots, so dig deep into the soil before you plant those bundles of flowering joy.

If you’re a novice gardener, the subject of pruning roses may cause you much angst. But don’t think of it as anything else than letting the sunlight filter into the flowers and letting them breathe. Pruning is basically common sense: remove the dead wood and leaves and let the healthy part of the rose bush flourish.

Sun Exposure Site and sun exposure requirements depend on the type of rose bush you plant. Most roses need about 5-6 hours of sunlight per day, but other shrubs including climbers and Rugosa types will grow in shady regions. Is there a difference between morning and afternoon sun? Absolutely. Afternoon sun is harsher, and morning sun will dry off leaves without leaving them brittle. Planting Roses 1. First, choose your rose plant. These should have a nicesized root ball. Dig an appropriate sized hole for the root ball. 2. Add some compost or manure to the hole. Now place the roots over this mixture and place the crown of the rose bush at ground level and fill the remaining soil around it. Now make sure the plant is sturdy. Water it well. 3. Make sure you inspect the rose plant periodically throughout the day, especially if it is placed in direct sunlight. This can make the leaves and roots become dry. Water frequently, taking care not to over water.

Yes, mildew is one of the most problematic aspects of growing roses. But not all people like spraying their precious flowers with insecticides. If you are one of these earth-conscious folk, consider planting disease-free roses like Rugosas. Make sure you remove all the leaves before they begin to regrow in the spring and just be vigilant. Chances are you won’t need any chemical repellants. Pruning Roses

Why should you prune? First of all, pruning helps redirect the growth of the plant. When a plant is pruned, it redirects its energy into producing new stems, leaves and flowers. All that dead, useless material is just sapping the bush of energy so it makes sense that these are eliminated as quickly as possible. There are three methods of pruning: hard pruning, moderate pruning and light pruning. Hard pruning is when stems are cut a substantial amount (think 10-12 inches). Moderate pruning means stems are cut by about half of their height. Light pruning means the stems are cut back to less than two thirds of their length. Enjoy Your Rose Garden There’s a myth floating around that roses are hard plants to grow and maintain. Not so! Once you grow roses, you’ll be hooked for life. Just remember to buy roses that will thrive in your temperature and soil and you’ll be all set Plus these gorgeous flowers will elicit such praise and compliments from everyone. Which is a sweet reward in and of itself. 67

A Quick & Simple Guide to Spring Cleaning It has to happen each year, right? That annual rite where you set aside time to spruce up your home. It is time to toss those clothes you know you’re never going to wear along with the toys you bought for your kids when they were toddlers. Spring Cleaning can be fun – really! The trick is to not let the daunting task prevent you from achieving your goals. Check out our room by room cleaning guide: The Kitchen This is definitely one of the harder rooms to tackle. Reserve at least 1-2 hours (or more if you have a larger or exceptionally untidy kitchen) to do this. 1. The first step is to make sure you have no dirty dishes in the sink, so you can tackle the larger, annual cleaning tasks in the room. 2. Make sure all your appliances are unplugged. This includes the toaster, the refrigerator (toss out all old and unwanted food), the microwave and the oven. 3. Use a good cleaning detergent like Fantastik Orange Action All Purpose Cleanser® or Lysol® for the floors. 68

Remember to clean every nook and cranny well. 4. Remove all the picture frames so you can thoroughly clean the walls. Kitchen walls dirty the most and they often have a lot of grime that need to be thoroughly taken off. Wear gloves and use an effective cleaner and sponge. 5. Remember to clean the ceiling fans and remove light bulbs from light fixtures before cleaning them. 6. Remove all curtains and draperies and clean them according to instructions. 7. Spray all windows with glass cleaner and polish them until they gleam. The Living Room Since people spend a lot of time in the living room, make sure you devote extra time to make this one super clean so you can enjoy it for months to come. 1. Declutter your living areas first: this means, putting away

images/ istockphoto.com

Checklist & Tips 1. Have you returned your overdue library books? 2. Have you stored your winter clothes in a safe, odor-free, pest-free area? 3. Do you really need all the magazines you have? Can you toss some? 4. If you’re giving clothes to charity, make sure you get a receipt for tax purposes. 5. Try to use environmentally friendly cleaning products as much as possible. Avoid harsh bleach, chemical-infused cleanser if you have children or pets at home. 6. Remember to do a little bit at a time. Spring Cleaning is a laborious process and can take several days or weekends to do.

your books, photographs etc. where they belong. 2. Dust your surfaces like the TVs and cabinets. Polish any wood surfaces with furniture polish. 3. Wipe your photo frames with a damp cloth. 4. Vacuum out your couches and chairs. If you need to rent a steam cleaner for this purpose, do it. 5. Remove all books from the bookshelves and clean the shelves thoroughly. 6. Clean the carpets thoroughly or even have a carpet cleaning crew come in and clean them. If you have wood flooring you can polish them. Scratched, damaged wood floors can be sanded and re-finished with polyurethane. Sometimes, this task is better left to the professionals. The Bathroom This is by no means a pleasant task, but a clean, spotless bathroom is an absolute necessity. 1. Start with your medicine cabinet. Toss out all

7. Enlist the family to help with the cleaning. Divide up the chores among them and see who can get the most sparkling room! 8. Use Microfiber cloths to dust surfaces because feather dusters and rags blow dust around and don’t trap them. There’s no question that cleaning is hard work. But think of your sparkling home when everything is done. A thorough Spring Cleaning will last your house an entire year; so you can look forward to the tasks that really excite you, such as arranging flowers, changing paint color and upholstery. Organize, be efficient and focus on the major cleaning tasks and your house will be clean and new for the year.

prescriptions, pill bottles, flu medicine etc. that are past their expiration date. 2. Dust all the ceilings and corners, and remove mildew from the bathtub with a good mildew remover. 3. Launder or clean your shower curtain! They build up more goop than anything else in the bathroom. 4. Scrub the toilet thoroughly, including all crevices. The Bedroom The bedroom is a haven and a place of repose for you. Think of it as a place filled with flowers, gleaming things, soft bedding and candles. 1. Repeat virtually every cleaning tactic you used for the living areas and the kitchen, including cleaning the floors, walls and drapes. 2. Make sure you bedding is thoroughly inspected. Now is the time to dry tclean those comforters and wash those delicate linens. 69

Spring Cleaning

Of course, this is the time to organize and group your clothing, toys, books and other household items you use on a daily basis. Use containers to store small items like barrettes, clips, and rubber bands. Label the containers so you don’t have to search for items. Store all your winter clothes in airtight containers and make sure you label what you put in each. Consider having a garage sale to get rid of all the things you no longer need. A good rule of thumb in not becoming a pack rat is to eliminate anything you haven’t used for a year or more. Trust, me, that gorgeous vintage gown you’ve been saving up for ten years will NOT come in handy during this particular year. Organization is not all about elimination. Consider adding to your medicine cabinet, the following staples: • A first aid kit: this should contain gauze, antiseptic, bandages, alcohol wipes. • Aloe Vera or Neosporin® to treat burns. • Insect repellent. • Cooling packs or heating packs for ankle sprains and muscle pulls. • Allergy medications. • Sunscreen. Organization, unfortunately, also applies to some of the most overlooked parts of the home. This includes cluttered desk drawers, piles of papers, receipts, business cards and all the little mountains of information that have been steadily creeping up over the past months. Take the time to input or scan all your business cards into electronic format. This may take you all day, but the output will be invaluable. Now you don’t ever need to worry about misplacing people’s contact information. Consider getting a receipt scanner so everything is neatly and automatically scanned and saved on your computer. Organization just got much easier if you do it efficiently! 70

ack pain. It’s the second most common reason why people call in sick to work (the first is the common cold). Back pain can be mild in some cases, and completely debilitating in others. In fact, statistics indicate that back 74

problems actually deteriorate in time, so make sure you nip your problems in the bud. The earlier you start preventing and curing your back pain, the better off you’ll be. Just follow our easy, step-by-step exercises for a back pain-free 2009!

‘‘ Back pain is the second

most common reason why people call in sick to work.

Back Hyperextensions Lie face down so that your body is completely straight and your hands are extended up above your head. Then slowly lift both your arms, your head and your right leg up while keeping your left leg on the floor. Feel that stretch in your lower back? That means you’re doing the

exercise correctly. Then reverse and lower your head, arms and right leg to the starting position and repeat with the other leg. Try to do at least three sets (repetitions of 10-12 each) so that your lower back muscles gradually strengthen and build up. 75

Strengthen Your Lower Back

Straight Leg Raises Lie flat on your back with arms to the side. Tighten your abdominal muscles and bend your left knee. Lift your right leg about 6 to 12 inches off the ground and hold that position for a few seconds. Lower your leg slowly. Repeat 76

ten times and alternate it with the your left knee bent. If you cannot lift your leg the full 6 inches off the ground, try to lift at least a few inches. You can increase the height as your stamina improves. Three sets, 10-12 reps.

Strengthen Your Lower Back

Hip Flexor Stretch Lie on your back and stretch your arms out to the side so they are 90 degrees to your body. Keep your legs straight. Bend your left knee and stretch it across your body till your knee is on your right side. Feel that nice stretch on top 78

of the hip and thigh. Hold this position for 20 seconds and bring your right knee back to the original position. Alternate with the other leg, again stretching it slowly across your lower body on top of the hip and thigh. Three sets, 10-12 reps.

Exercise Ball Back Extensions You’ll need a balance ball for these extensions. Your back will be in super shape after you do them! Lie on the exercise ball with your arms out in front of you on the floor, and keep your feet firmly positioned behind you. Now slowly raise your upper body (take care

not to move your hips, only your torso) so that your hands come up in the air and back to the original position when you’re done. Repeat at least six to seven times for a full set and gradually increase the number of sets. 79

Strengthen Your Lower Back Back Hyperextensions This is an advanced stretch for the lower back, and remember to take your time with it if it seems daunting at first. In addition to working the lower back, this exercise also works out the glutes and stretches the hamstrings. If your back is in severe pain, do not do this exercise. 80

The key to make this move easy and streamlined is to avoid swinging the legs and raising them too far above the hips. Strengthen your core by keeping your abs engaged. 1. Lie down with the forearms firmly on the floor and the ball underneath your torso and hips.

Muscle pain isn’t pretty! Introducing Cryo-MAX® Cold Therapy Packs. Forget short-term gel packs and messy ice bags. New Cryo-MAX® is the first cold therapy pack that’s designed to outlast your pain… strain… sprain… arthritis… whatever. For up to 8 hours without re-freezing! Strengthen Your Lower Back

With exercise and proper strengthening of ‘‘ the back muscles and the abdominals, (the muscles that support the back,) experts agree that the frequency of back pain could decrease.

2. Keep your legs straight behind you, with the toes resting on the floor. Make sure you remain stable and don’t let the ball wobble. 3. Keeping the legs together, raise them up slowly, until they are level with the hips. Go as high as you can and don’t strain. 4. Lower the back to the

82

starting position and repeat 10-12 times. Do a few sets if you can. Remember, these exercises really need to be done every day or every other day to strengthen your back. Once you get the hang of them, your lower back will feel stretched and limber and pain free. We promise!

What is Melanoma Skin Cancer?

Melanoma is a cancer that starts in a certain type of skin cell. To understand melanoma, it helps to know some things about normal skin.

These basal cells divide to form keratinocytes, (also called squamous cells) which make a protein called keratin. This protein helps protect the body.

Normal skin

Melanocytes are the cells that can become melanoma. They are also found in the epidermis. These skin cells make the brown pigment called melanin. Melanin makes skin tan or brown and protects the deeper layers of the skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

The skin is the largest organ in the body. It does many different things: • covers the organs inside the body and protects them from injury • helps to keep out germs • helps keep in water and other fluids • helps control body temperature The skin has 3 layers (fig. 1): • epidermis • dermis • subcutis The top layer of the skin, the epidermis, is very thin and protects the deeper layers of skin and the organs. The epidermis itself has 3 layers: an upper, a middle, and a bottom layer made up of basal cells. 84

A layer called the basement membrane separates the epidermis from the deeper layers of skin. The basement membrane is important because when a cancer becomes more advanced, it may grow through this barrier. Other skin cancers Skin cancers that are not melanoma are sometimes grouped together as non-melanoma skin cancers because they start from skin cells other than melanocytes. These cancers include basal cell and squamous cell cancers. They are much more common skin cancers. Because they rarely spread, basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers are less worrisome and are treated differently than melanoma. They are discussed in the American Cancer Society’s document, Skin Cancer: Basal and Squamous Cell.

image/ istockphoto.com Benign skin tumors Most tumors of the skin are not cancer and rarely, if ever, turn into cancer. There are many types of non-cancerous (benign) tumors that start in other types of skin cells, such as:

Melanoma most often starts on the trunk of fair-skinned men and on the lower legs of fair-skinned women, but it can start in other places, too. Having dark skin lowers the risk of melanoma. But it does not mean that a person with dark skin will never get melanoma.

• hemangiomas – benign blood vessel growths often called strawberry spots or port wine stains

Melanoma can almost always be cured in its early stages. But it is likely to spread to other parts of the body if it is not caught early. Melanoma is much less common than basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, but it is far more serious.

• lipomas – soft growths of benign fat cells

How Many People Get Melanoma Skin Cancer?

• warts – rough-surfaced growths caused by a virus

Melanoma skin cancers

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Melanoma accounts for less than 5% of skin cancer cases. But it causes most skin cancer deaths. The number of new cases of melanoma in the United States has not changed much in the last 8 years. Overall, the lifetime risk of getting melanoma is about 1 in 50 for whites, 1 in 1,000 for blacks, 1 in 200 for Hispanics.

Melanoma is a cancer that begins in the melanocytes. Because most of these cells still make melanin, melanoma tumors are often brown or black. But this is not always the case, and melanomas can also have no color.

The American Cancer Society estimated that in 2008 there were 62,480 new cases of melanoma in the United States, and that about 8,420 people could possibly die of this disease.

• seborrheic keratoses – tan, brown, or black raised spots with a "waxy" texture, or rough surface

• moles (also called nevi) – benign skin tumors that start from melanocytes • Spitz nevus – a kind of skin tumor that sometimes looks like melanoma

What Causes Breast Cancer

What's New in Melanoma Research? Research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of melanoma is going on in many medical centers around the world.

Causes and prevention Sunlight and UV radiation Recent studies suggest there may be 2 ways that UV rays causes melanoma. The first way is linked to a lot of sun exposure and sunburns as a child or teenager. This early sun exposure starts a change in skin cells that may later turn into melanoma. Some doctors think this accounts for melanomas that start on the legs and trunk -- areas that aren't often exposed to the sun in adulthood. The second link is to melanomas that start on the arms, neck, and face. These areas are often exposed to sun, particularly in men. Tanning booths may also help these kinds of melanomas develop. Public education Most skin cancer can be prevented. You can do this by avoiding too much sun exposure and protecting yourself and your children when you are in the sun. Don't forget that sunscreen should be used to protect skin from the sun's rays during normal activity. It should not be used to allow you to spend more time in the sun. It is also important to find melanoma early, when it is most likely to be completely cured. Check your skin every month and be aware of the warning signs of melanoma. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) sponsors 86

free skin cancer screenings around the country every year. Many local ACS offices work with the ADD to help with these screenings. Their phone number and Internet address are listed in the “How can I learn more? section. DNA research Scientists have made a lot of progress during the past few years in learning how UV light harms DNA. Changes in DNA can cause normal skin cells to become cancer. People who have a strong family history of melanoma should talk to a cancer genetic counselor or a doctor who knows about cancer genetics to discuss the benefits and possible drawbacks to genetic testing. Staging Advances in research are also being applied to staging the cancer. Very sensitive new tests can better find the spread of melanoma to lymph nodes. One type of test can find one melanoma cell among a million normal cells. This might help identify some patients who could be helpedwith treatments like immunotherapy after surgery. But some doctors worry that this test can sometimes suggest that a person has cancer when they really don't. So for now the test is only being used in research studies.

Treatment Immune therapy New ways of working with the immune system to fight cancer are being studied. Researchers are working on vaccines aimed at making a person immune to his or her melanoma cells. Another method is to train a person's im-

mune cells to attack the melanoma cells.

ness of the melanoma also guides the choice of treatment.

Other forms of immunotherapy are also being studied. A recent small study showed that treating patients with immune system cells found in tumors could shrink melanoma tumors and possibly prolong life, too. Another study found that a type of white blood cell (T cells) that had their genes altered in the lab could cause tumors to shrink in a small number of patients. More studies of these treatments are being done.

In one method of measuring the thickness of the melanoma, the doctor uses a device something like a small ruler. This is called the Breslow measurement. Another system describes the thickness of a melanoma in relation to layers of the skin instead of actually measuring it. The Clark level of a melanoma uses a scale of I to V (1-5) to describe which layers of the skin are involved. Higher numbers mean a deeper melanoma.

Molecular targeting

Most often, the Breslow measurement of thickness is used in staging the cancer. Sometimes, though, the Clark level shows that a melanoma is more advanced than it appears from the Breslow measurement. Because of this, both systems may be used to describe a melanoma.

New drugs that attack genes that are not normal are being studied. One example is a gene called BRAF. This gene is abnormal in most melanoma cells. Drugs that target the activity of this Fig. 1 gene are being developed and studied in clinical trials. Gene therapy One of the most promising new ideas in treating melanoma involves adding certain genes to the cancer cells. There are different ways that adding these genes can help to fight the cancer. Clinical trials testing gene therapy are going on now.

After the Tests: Staging Staging is the process of finding out how widespread the cancer is. This includes finding out how big it is and whether it has spread to the lymph nodes or any other organs. The tests described above are used to help decide the stage of the melanoma. Staging is very important because the treatment and the outlook (prognosis) for your recovery depend on the stage of the cancer. Stages are labeled using 0 and the Roman numerals I through IV (1-4). In general, the lower the number, the less the cancer has spread. A higher number, such as stage IV (4), means a more serious cancer. There are really 2 types of staging for melanoma. The clinical stage is based on what is found in the physical exam, biopsy, x-rays, CT scans, and so on. The pathological stage uses all of this information plus what is found during biopsies of lymph nodes or other organs. So the clinical stage (which is done first) may be lower than the pathologic stage, which is found after the biopsy. After looking at your test results, the doctor will tell you the stage of your cancer. Be sure to ask your doctor to explain your stage in a way you understand. This will help you both decide on the best treatment for you.

In either system, the melanoma is said to have a worse prognosis if it is ulcerated; this means that there is no covering layer of skin.

What Are Some Questions I Can Ask My Doctor? As you cope with cancer and cancer treatment, you need to have honest, open talks with your doctor. You should feel free to ask any question that’s on your mind, no matter how small it might seem. Here are some questions you might want to ask. Be sure to add your own questions as you think of them. Nurses, social workers, and other members of your treatment team may also be able to answer many of your questions. • Would you please write down the exact type of skin cancer I have. • How far has my melanoma spread within or beneath my skin? • How thick is the melanoma? • What treatment choices do I have? What do you recommend and why? • What are the risks and benefits of each? • What is the goal of this treatment? • Will I have a scar after my treatment? • What should I do to be ready for treatment? • Will I lose my hair? If so, what can I do about it? • What are the chances of my cancer coming back with the treatment you suggest? What would we do then?

Thickness of the melanoma

• Should I take special care to avoid sun exposure?

The thickness of the melanoma as seen in the skin biopsy is called the “T category.” The thinner the melanoma, the better the outlook. A Three Part Series on Women and Depression

from

National Institute of Mental Health Transforming the understanding and treatment of mental illness through research

What is depression? Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad, but these feelings are usually fleeting and pass within a couple of days. When a woman has a depressive disorder, it interferes with daily life and normal functioning, and causes pain for both the woman with the disorder and those who care about her. Depression is a common but serious illness, and most who have it need treatment to get better.

What are the different forms of depression? There are several forms of depressive disorders that occur in both women and men. The most common are major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder. Minor depression is also common. Major depressive disorder, also called major depression, is characterized by a combination of symptoms that interfere with a person’s ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy once-pleasurable activities. Major depression is disabling and prevents a person from functioning normally. An episode of major depression may occur only once in a person’s lifetime, but more often, it recurs throughout a person’s life. There are several forms of depressive disorders. People with dysthymia may also experience one or more episodes of major depression during their lifetimes. Some forms of depressive disorder exhibit slightly different characteristics than those described above, or they may develop under unique circumstances. However, not 89

Many women with a depressive illness never seek treatment. But the vast majority, even those with the most severe depression, can get better with treatment.

all scientists agree on how to characterize and define these forms of depression. They include: Psychotic depression, which occurs when a severe depressive illness is accompanied by some form of psychosis, such as a break with reality, hallucinations, and delusions.

same symptoms. In addition, the severity and frequency of symptoms, and how long they last, will vary depending on the individual and her particular illness. Symptoms of depression include: • Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” feelings • Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism

Postpartum depression, which is diagnosed if a new mother develops a major depressive episode within one month after delivery. It is estimated that 10 to 15 percent of women experience postpartum depression after giving birth.1

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which is characterized by the onset of a depressive illness during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight. The depression generally lifts during spring and summer. SAD may be effectively treated with light therapy, but nearly half of those with SAD do not respond to light therapy alone. Antidepressant medication and psychotherapy can reduce SAD symptoms, either alone or in combination with light therapy.2

• Fatigue and decreased energy

Bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness, is not as common as major depression or dysthymia. Bipolar disorder is characterized by cycling mood changes-from extreme highs (e.g., mania) to extreme lows (e.g., depression). Visit the NIMH website for more information about bipolar disorder: http://www.nimh.nih.gov

What causes depression in women? Scientists are examining many potential causes for and contributing factors to women’s increased risk for depression. It is likely that genetic, biological, chemical, hormonal, environmental, psychological, and social factors all intersect to contribute to depression.

If a woman has a family history of depression, she may be more at risk of developing the illness. However, this is not a hard and fast rule. Depression can occur in women without family histories of depression, and women from families with a history of depression may not develop depression themselves. Genetics research indicates that the risk for developing depression likely involves the combination of multiple genes with environmental or other factors.3 Chemicals and hormones Brain chemistry appears to be a significant factor in depressive disorders. Modern brain-imaging technologies, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have shown that the brains of people suffering from depression look different than those of people without depression. The parts of the brain responsible for regulating mood, thinking, sleep, appetite and behavior don’t appear to be functioning normally. In addition, important neurotransmitters-chemicals that brain cells use to communicate-appear to be out of balance. But these images do not reveal WHY the depression has occurred. Scientists are also studying the influence of female hormones, which change throughout life. Researchers have shown that hormones directly affect the brain chemistry that controls emotions and mood. Specific times during a woman’s life are of particular interest, including puberty; the times before menstrual periods; before, during, and just after pregnancy (postpartum); and just prior to and during menopause (perimenopause). Premenstrual dysphoric disorder Some women may be susceptible to a severe form of premenstrual syndrome called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Women affected by PMDD typically experience depression, anxiety, irritability and mood swings the week before menstruation, in such a way that interferes with their normal functioning. Women with debilitating PMDD do not necessarily have unusual hormone changes, but they do have different responses to these changes.4 They may also have a history of other mood disorders and differences in brain chemistry that cause them to be more sensitive to menstruation-related hormone changes. Scientists are exploring how the cyclical rise and fall of estrogen and other hormones may affect the brain chemistry that is associated with depressive illness.5,6,7 Postpartum depression Women are particularly vulnerable to depression after giving birth, when hormonal and physical changes and the new responsibility of caring for a newborn can be overwhelming. Many new mothers experience a brief episode of mild mood changes known as the “baby blues,” but some will suffer from postpartum depression, a much more serious condition that requires active treatment and emotional support for the new mother. One study found that postpartum women are at an increased risk for several mental disorders, including depression, for several months after childbirth.8 Some studies suggest that women who experience 92

postpartum depression often have had prior depressive episodes. Some experience it during their pregnancies, but it often goes undetected. Research suggests that visits to the doctor may be good opportunities for screening for depression both during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.9,10 Menopause Hormonal changes increase during the transition between premenopause to menopause. While some women may transition into menopause without any problems with mood, others experience an increased risk for depression. This seems to occur even among women without a history of depression.11,12 However, depression becomes less common for women during the post-menopause period.13 Stress Stressful life events such as trauma, loss of a loved one, a difficult relationship or any stressful situation-whether welcome or unwelcome-often occur before a depressive episode. Additional work and home responsibilities, caring for children and aging parents, abuse, and poverty also may trigger a depressive episode. Evidence suggests that women respond differently than men to these events, making them more prone to depression. In fact, research indicates that women respond in such a way that prolongs their feelings of stress more so than men, increasing the risk for depression.14 However, it is unclear why some women faced with enormous challenges develop depression, and some with similar challenges do not. What illnesses often coexist with depression in women? Depression often coexists with other illnesses that may precede the depression, follow it, cause it, be a

consequence of it, or a combination of these. It is likely that the interplay between depression and other illnesses differs for every person and situation. Regardless, these other coexisting illnesses need to be diagnosed and treated. Depression often coexists with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and others, especially among women. Anxiety disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder, also sometimes accompany depression.15,16 Women are more prone than men to having a coexisting anxiety disorder.17 Women suffering from PTSD, which can result after a person endures a terrifying ordeal or event, are especially prone to having depression. Although more common among men than women, alcohol and substance abuse or dependence may occur at the same time as depression.17,15 Research has indicated that among both sexes, the coexistence of mood disorders and substance abuse is common among the U.S. population.18 Depression also often coexists with other serious medical illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, thyroid problems and multiple sclerosis, and may even make symptoms of the illness worse.19 Studies have shown that both women and men who have depression in addition to a serious medical illness tend to have more severe symptoms of both illnesses. They also have more difficulty adapting to their medical condition, and more medical costs than those who do not have coexisting depression. Research has shown that treating the depression along with the coexisting illness will help ease both conditions.20 (End of Part One - Ref: pge 108) 93

The Barbed Wire Fence of Health:

Antioxidants You’ve heard this word so often that you’re probably sick of hearing about it. We understand. Antioxidants have been written about to death and people toss this word as freely as they do “global warming” or “organic.” Here, we explore the reason why antioxidants have achieved pop cult status in the world of health and medicine, and how you can get more than your fair share of them. What’s the Hype All About? First, before we even discuss the subject of antioxidants, you should know about free radicals. No, we’re not talking about liberal country rejuvenators or dictators: we’re talking about substances that actually assault your body. Free radicals are harmful atoms or groups of atoms that have an unpaired electron. They are formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Free radicals have a charge due to the excess or deficiency of electrons and they literally ravage your body to grab or donate electrons. This causes cell damage, and also harm to your DNA and proteins. The same oxidative process causes apples to turn brown, oils to decay and iron to rust. The last thing you want is your body to defenseless against these radicals. Of course, 94

no one is immune from the attack, but you would do well to protect the radicals from causing much damage to your body. And no, free radicals are not external threats only. They are also produced from sources within your body, such as oxidants that arise from normal aerobic respiration, metabolism and inflammation. Of course the external factors are pretty obvious: these include sunlight, pollution, smoking and alcohol. The biggest worry about free radicals is probably cell damage. When damaged calls accumulate in your body, chances of cancer increase. Once formed, these radicals are like dominoes and can start a chain effect. Antioxidants to the Rescue Antioxidants are molecules as well. They safely interact with the free radicals and interfere in the chain reaction (of oxidation) before vital cells, DNA or cell membrane is damaged. Statistics have shown that people who have a diet rich in vegetables and fruits have lower incidents of cancer risk than people who don’t. There is no conclusive evidence to date that proves that extra antioxidants stave off cancer, but there’s a good chance that your health won’t deteriorate if you do. Antioxidants are also thought to increase longevity and reduce the risk of heart attacks.

Here are some foods that have a high antioxidant content: All Kinds of Berries Berries may well be the kings of the antioxidant-rich heap. These fruits are plentiful, fragile, charming and highly nutritive. They also have a lot of fiber, minerals and vitamins. Make sure your diet contains blueberries, raspberries and blackberries that are rich in proanthocyanidins. Other berries like raspberries and strawberries contain ellagic acid, a plant compound that combats carcinogens. Blueberries also have been suggested to delay the onset of age-related loss of cognitive function. Broccoli Broccoli is probably one of the least favored foods of children, but this cruciferous vegetable has a lot of powerful antioxidants. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts contain a compound called indole-3carbinol (I3C - a potent antioxidant that breaks down estrogen in the body) that reduces the risk of breast cancer and other estrogen-sensitive cancers, like cancer of the ovaries and cervix. Other studies have shown that broccoli can help fight cervical dysplasia, a precancerous condition. Broccoli contains other protective constituents like betacarotene, which can help prevent cancer. Tomatoes Tomatoes have been known to ward off certain kinds of cancer, prevent macular degeneration and cataracts, and help maintain mental function as we age. They contain lycopene, a relatively rare member of the carotenoid family, also found in pink grapefruit and twice as powerful as beta-carotene. There have been studies that have shown a reduction in prostrate cancer incidents among men who eat more tomatoes or tomato sauce. Also, lycopene is fatsoluble, so eating tomatoes with oil can improve absorption.

studies suggest that eating garlic regularly can help prevent cancer. It also has potent anti-fungal properties and can help treat asthma and yeast infections. Spinach Remember Popeye and Olive? Well, those cartoons had a kernel of truth in them (we’re not saying eating spinach will give you bulging muscles, but they certainly will help your health). Spinach contains an antioxidant called lutein, which helps protect your vision. People who eat spinach are less likely to develop cataracts and macular degeneration, the two most common causes of vision loss. Tea The Chinese certainly hit a jackpot when they discovered tea. Tea has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and other diseases. It was originally thought that green tea had more antioxidants than black tea, but recent studies suggest that they are equally beneficial. The catechins in green tea are oxidized in the manufacturing process of black tea, forming free-radical fighting theaflavins. Carrots Carrots have a powerful antioxidant called beta-carotene, a member of the healing family of carotenoids. This is also found in other root vegetables like beets, sweet potatoes and yams. Beta-carotene provides protection against: cancer, especially lung, bladder, breast, esophageal and stomach cancers. Soy

You’ve probably heard about how red wine can help your health. This is because it has substances called resveratrol and quercetin found in red grapes. These potent antioxidants boost heart health by acting as freeradical scavengers, reducing platelet aggregation and helping blood vessels remain open and flexible. Resveratrol can also protect against cancer and reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases, gastric ulcers, stroke and even osteoporosis.

Soy is a favorite food among vegans, vegetarians and health freaks alike. The benefits of eating soy are numerous: it helps prevent cancer, lower cholesterol, ward off osteoporosis and lessen the effects of menopause. This is partly because soy contains of Genistein and other isoflavones, which resemble natural estrogens in thev body. Studies have demonstrated that Genistein can help prevent breast, colon and prostate cancers. Additionally, soy can reduce both overall cholesterol levels and LDL (low-density lipoprotein or “bad”) cholesterol levels, without affecting the levels of beneficial HDL. Soy can also prevent osteoporosis and help alleviate the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes.

Garlic

Whole Grains

Garlic is legendary for many things: warding off vampires, building up the immune system, and staving off heart disease. The pungent garlic smell comes from the sulfur compounds in this herb, and these are also responsible for its healing benefits.

Eat whole grain cereal for a quick and painless way to get your source of antioxidants. Cereal contains Vitamin E that has been known to play a role in preventing cancer, as well as boosting immunity. Vitamin E also slows the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease, help improve the condition of arthritis and prevent sunburn. Grains are also rich in phytic acid, known as IP-6, a potent antioxidant that can help protect against breast, colon and liver cancers.

Red Grapes

Studies have shown that garlic keeps the heart healthy by lowering cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure, fighting free radicals and keeping blood from clotting. Other

State Fairs

H

ave you met anyone who doesn’t enjoy a good State Fair? To experience the amusement rides, eat salty pretzels and cotton candy is to feel like a kid again; so it’s no surprise that State Fairs are enormously popular among adults and children alike. History

‘‘

According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of the word “fair” is a “periodical gathering of buyers and sellers.” Now, carnival rides, food booths, petting zoos and commercial booths are all staples in any state fair. Originally, a state fair was just an exhibition of livestock in various categories, and they were not necessarily for sale.

A fair such as Michigan’s has been the focal point for farmers as they plan their annual agenda. It gives them a chance to learn about new methods, exchange notes and improve their technology. In 2008, the Michigan State Fair had several “Miracle of Life” exhibits, where they showed live births from lambs, calves, piglets, ducks, and turkeys among other livestock.

If you or your family members have a talent, here’s the venue to showcase it!

Some State Fairs are enormously popular and almost legendary. The Arizona State Fair, for example, was started as a small territorial fair almost 124 years ago. Now, it is one of the best attended and biggest fairs in the country, where you can eat a deep fried Twinkie, see and pet pot-bellied pigs, and hear a cool rock band in one setting. The first Fair in America was actually held in Michigan in 1849. It is a historical agricultural event, and there is a family entertainment and exhibit in Detroit that runs until Labor Day. The location of the fair initially changed 98

frequently, but in 1958 the fairgrounds became a State Historic Site and the venue became permanent.

A Cornucopia of Entertainment

The Missouri State Fair is bringing back the Amazing Anastasini Circus by popular demand. Some fairs have animal racing competitions and pie eating contests that are sure to please the gourmet and PETA member alike. Many have contests and donate the proceeds to charity. The variety of entertainment options can be awe-inspiring. From magic shows to circuses to petting zoos, there’s never a dull moment. In a recent North Carolina State Fair, there was a “magic” poodle show for kids that featured the dogs jumping through hula-hoops and poodles that also pretended to be in fire. The New York State Fair has over 375 acres of animals, exhibits and displays. Held in Syracuse, NY, this fair is one of the biggest in the country, and brings together millions of visitors each year. And this is probably the highlight of any

2009 State Fair Calendar

fair: it brings together such a diverse cross-section of state residents. And, perhaps the best part of a fair is the price. It is highly affordable (most charge only $10-$12 in admission fees; children under 12 get in for free in most states). There is some form of entertainment in state fairs that is sure to please every member of the family: in some ways, this is better than going to the movies or a concert! Animal Contests, Petting Zoos and More The Delaware State Fair reportedly gets over 300,000 visitors annually. A big state fair like Arizona or Delaware has a livestock judging competition that is great fun for kids and adults alike. There are a variety of categories, including: Dairy Department (the best cows); Goats; Horse & Pony; Poultry & Rabbit; Sheep; Swine, and Beef. Some fairs also sell off the champion livestock to farmers that are willing to pay top dollar. Some state fairs, like Pennsylvania County’s, also have agricultural fairs that coincide with the date of the State Fairs. The focal point is to showcase agriculture and horticulture. Talent Shows & Contests If you or your family members have a talent, here’s the venue to showcase it! Here are the various types of talent competitions that you can expect to find at state fairs: • Youth Competitions • Decorating Contests (e.g. Christmas Tree, Hats, Gingerbread houses etc.) • Chili vs. Chowder Competition • Eating competitions • Ice Cream Making Contest • Lego Model Contest • Cooking contests • Youth Pedal Tractor Pulls Some fairs also have beauty pageant contests that are great for teenagers to participate in.

These are the dates for the main “annual” state fair. But there are activities that happen on the fairgrounds throughout the year. In Arizona, for example, the yearly calendar of events is impressive. There are Kennel Club Shows, Car Marts, Antique Shows, Book Sales and Rummage Sales that occur nearly every month. So plan your schedule ahead of time, and invite as many friends and family members that you know. Remember, there’s nothing like a day at the fair! Cut Your Bills in Half: The Brilliance of Coupon Clipping

Lynn Welch, a mom of five who home schools all her kids in Connecticut, regularly clips coupons to save a bundle when she shops. “It’s an easy way to save money off your grocery bills,” she says. “There are people that save $80 each week off their grocery bill. I use other coupons too. If we want to get a pizza for our kids, we check all our sources. Even the phone book has coupons.” Of course, times have changed from the days where coupon clipping was merely a hobby or a “smart” thing to do on occasion to a ritual of necessity. With the fragile economy, coupon clipping has become a way for many to make ends meet. There are so many sources for coupons: the magazines, phone book, the internet and grocery receipts. Online Coupon Codes Online shopping is a little bit different than shopping with grocery coupons or printed coupons. Online coupons usually have codes that typically blend letters and numbers and you need to type or paste them into a web form before you can get the discount.

advertisements to their store: the coupon codes exist so you will come and actually buy something and get 10% off the purchase price, for example. You can find coupon codes basically everywhere. Some of these codes are pretty hard to miss: they are on the home page of a major retailer, or pop up in little boxes as you surface the web. Some coupon codes are offered to you as you complete your purchase, hoping that you’ll come back a second time and enjoy a nice discount. There are also some neat web sites that offer coupon codes like naughtycodes.com (you can find codes for free shipping or 10% on several major retailers and online shopping sites). One sure-fire way to always have a steady stream of coupon codes is to check with online sites that specialize in finding, categorizing, and offering Internet coupons. Look for websites that advertise “free coupons” or “free online coupons.” These sites provide the coupons free of charge and earn their money in other ways such as promotions, affiliate links, selling ad space to retailers, etc.

Many web sites will offer promotional codes which are typically a short-term or one time offer. Sometimes these codes just surface when you are getting ready to hit the purchase button. Beside these words was a little text box where you could type the code. When you see this, it simply means you can enjoy certain savings on your purchase by using a coupon code.

When visiting a free coupon website, be sure to follow the directions carefully to ensure you’ll receive your discount. Some of the featured stores will offer coupon codes to copy and paste when ordering at their website. Others may require you to click a certain link to visit that store and receive the discount. Either way, you’ll still enjoy the savings at many great online stores including Avon, PetMeds, Macy’s, and many other popular stores.

Just as with regular stores where you receive coupons in person or in your receipt, online stores post coupons with a promotional code at various places on the Web to try and drum up business. Of course, these promotions serve as

“For many families, food is the number one area of the budget that can be cut back,” she says. Her web sites are a gold mine of valuable information and full of tips you never knew about. She breaks down grocery shopping by aisle and item and shows you the way to maximize your savings as you shop. For example, here are some of her tips on “Cereal and Breakfast” shopping:

If you’re a fan of coupons and the savings they yield, now is the time to use them smartly. “Marketers have historically distributed more coupons when the economy slows in an effort to motivate consumer purchases,” says Charles Brown, vice president for worldwide coupon processor NCH, “and consumers tend to be more apt to respond and redeem during periods of economic decline.”

Tip #1 - Cereal can be a great bargain food when purchased on sale and/or with a coupon, but if it’s not on sale don’t buy it! Tip #2 - It’s often cheaper to buy the smaller boxes of cereal, whether on sale and/or with a coupon or not. The cereal companies know we like to buy in bulk so the bigger boxes can sometimes be priced at a higher amount per ounce. Tip #3 - Bacon, sausage and other breakfast meats can be purchased in bulk when on sale and stored in the freezer.

In 2000, American shoppers redeemed 4.5 billion coupons and saved an estimated $3.6 billion. The Promotion Marketing Association Coupon Council’s coupon statistics for 2000 indicate that women continue to use coupons more than men (85.3% to 68.6%), while coupon use remains high across all education levels, with 73% of high school graduates, 80% of college graduates and 80% of postgraduates reported as users. Celeb Close-Up

Tougher Than Nails : the Rise and Rise of Jennifer Aniston It’s been a banner year already for Jennifer Aniston. Her recent blockbuster hit movie, Marley & Me, topped the box office during the Christmas 2008 weekend launch, garnering $14.7 million on Christmas Day alone and $51.7 million in four days. What’s more, it became the highest grossing film tever to open on December 25th. The film debuted in tandem with the mother of all Aniston “magazine covers.” Yes, you know the one we’re talking about: the GQ Magazine shot where she posed nude, wearing nothing but a Brooks Brothers tie. The cover may have been the most talked about issue in GQ’s history, and elicited comments that Aniston was doing it just to turn the spotlight away from her ex-husband Brad Pitt and his girlfriend, Angelina Jolie. It seemed like an odd choice for an actress who was promoting a wholesome family movie about a dog, and prompted rumors that she was doing this to show up Jolie. At a recent press tour, Aniston said, “I wasn’t trying to make any statement.” Certainly, the last few years have not been emotionally easy for Aniston. She has had an on again, off-again relationship with one of the most famous and notorious musicians of his time – John Mayer. In her interview with, she says, ““Honestly, did not know much about him before I met him. I’d heard ... you know, uh, ‘Your Body,’ that song. But what I can say is that I had no idea what an extraordinary musician he is.” She quickly adds, ““We care deeply for each other, and we’re just trying to figure it out,” and adds, “I am not having his baby. And I have not popped the question.” Many have wondered if Aniston is clinging on to John Mayer for dear life simply because she needs someone 102

But her display of the entire shoot, he also profited from public affection with Mayer was clear myself on a magazine cover I don’t it since he retained the international when he came to support her at her copyright. see it as me, but as someone David Letterman, December 2008 In her interview with Vanity Fair in appearance to promote Marley & Me. painted, fluffed, puffed and done up. 2005, Aniston was very vocal about The two were clearly smitten with W Magazine’s 60-page spread, “I can each other and looked very much in love. also imagine Brad having absolutely no clue why people Although she sometimes looks as fragile and emotionally jilted, Aniston’s is strong at her core. She’s survived a very messy, extremely public breakup; seen her ex-husband fly over to the Jolie camp and start a family; and been involved with men who seemed a little too cagey or noncommittal to take on the challenge of settling down (Vince Vaughn and British model Paul Sculfor, who’s now dating Cameron Diaz). It All Started with the “Break-Up” Ironically, Aniston, who starred in the movie called The Break-Up (co-starring with Vince Vaughn) had one of the worst breakups in the history of Hollywood. The feud between her, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt is one that is still going strong, despite several years, much to the delight of the tabloids and the paparazzi. In Aniston’s own words, it’s the “Bermuda Triangle” of feuds. In 2005, right after the split from Pitt, she gave an interview to Vanity Fair where she burst into tears before the interview even began. Yes, she was that vulnerable. But before she found out about Pitt and Jolie, she was very graceful and protective of what she and Pitt had together. “We exited this relationship as beautifully as we entered it.” To add salt to the wounds, Aniston soon discovered that Jolie and Pitt had begun a pretty serious affair, and photographs of the Hollywood’s hottest new couple showed Jolie and Pitt holding hands, very much in love. “The world was shocked, and I was shocked,” Aniston said when she discovered that the entire Jolie-Pitt family, along with Maddox, was at a romantic beach resort in Africa. Aniston split with Pitt on January 7, 2005 and the photos of Angelina and Pitt on a beach surfaced on April 29th. She filed for divorce in March, 2005. The entire affair gutted her heart. “It’s sad, something coming to an end. It cracks you open, in a way—cracks you open to feeling. When you try to avoid the pain, it creates greater pain. I’m a human being, having a human experience in front of the world. I wish it weren’t in front of the world. I try really hard to rise above it.” Domestic Bliss Things weren’t going to get much better. Later on in 2005, W Magazine featured a 60 page photo spread (yes, 60 pages!) that featured Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as a typical 1960s happily-married couple with a brood of beautiful blond Pitt lookalikes running around. The timing couldn’t have been worse. Aniston and Pitt were barely separated for a few months before the magazine issue hit the newsstands, which prompted Aniston to say

would be appalled by it. Brad is not mean-spirited; he would never intentionally try to rub something in my face. In hindsight, I can see him going, ‘Oh—I can see that that was inconsiderate.’ But I know Brad. Brad would say, ‘That’s art!’ But one has to applaud Aniston for not trying to berate, malign or slander her former husband in any way. She has always tried so hard to hold her head high, to be the unselfish “better” person. “What happened to him after the separation—it’s his life now,” she says. “I’ve made a conscious effort not to add to the toxicity of this situation.” Aniston maintains to this day that she doesn’t fully understand what happened to her marriage. Things definitely changed when Pitt started working with Jolie on the movie set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith (he maintains he never cheated on Aniston while they were married and she believes him). But emotionally, he became unavailable to her, and did not even attend the final taping of Friends. For Aniston, the loss of Friends meant the loss of her family of more than a decade. Pitt was completely unavailable to Aniston, she says, to help her cope with that emotional loss. “30 Rock” and What’s Next There are rumors that Jennifer Aniston may be a permanent fixture on the hit NBC show 30 Rock. When asked about this opportunity, she told GQ, ““That to me, is an ideal job: great cast, New York City. We’ll see what I say if they come back and ask me – I wouldn’t say yes, I wouldn’t say no.” Her relationship with John Mayer has been like a series of Desperate Housewives episodes: on-again, off-again, on the rocks, back in love, etc. The world wants to know: when will Aniston settle down? And considering that she’s 39, time is not on her side. She has often said that she does not get the fascination of the media on her personal life. “I don’t know what it means to be a sex symbol. When I look at myself on a magazine cover I don’t see it as me, but as someone painted, fluffed, puffed and done up.” Well, sex symbol or not, the world will never get enough of the blonde former Friends beauty. She’s like the girl next door, but tougher. Movies like Bruce Almighty and Marley & Me propelled her to stratospheric heights and she’s still doing roles in films that she loves. In addition to her grueling schedule being on the set constantly, she is a tremendous athlete, “I love to run, and I do yoga, not everyday, but like every other day,” she says. When asked about her life now, she replies, “It just gets better.” 103

finances

Safety First: Safe Investments That Really Grow With Time T here are no words to describe the financial meltdown of 2008, and we know you feel it. We all feel it. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by more than 45 percent last year and millions of people lost their hard earned life savings, and some of them lost every penny they had.

If you’re scared stiff about investing now, you have good reason to be. But there are several reasons why you should not let the media and bad press about investing in this economy scare you away from planning for the future. The Time Value of Money Have you ever heard about the time value of money? Sure, you have. Time is money, right? Consultants charge by the hour, and so do bankers, lawyers and numerous other professional. Every second means money in the bank for some service provider. Why can’t it mean money for you? Money today needs to earn interest and income for you tomorrow. That’s the basic principle of the time value of money. Some people also like to think of it as: a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. This concept should be fairly easy to understand because of inflation. Basically, if you can buy a soda for 99 cents today, 104

tomorrow, that same 99 cents will probably fetch you only half a can of soda, because inflation would have increased the price. So, it makes sense to invest and save your dollars today so you can get two dollars tomorrow. Which means you’ll more than break even, you’ll actually be ahead. Savings Bonds If the stock market is not for you during 2009 (and for many people, it isn’t), then consider putting your money in savings bonds. Savings Bonds are Treasury Bonds, which means they are backed by the United States Treasury and considered failsafe investments. Because they promise you a guaranteed appreciation in price, the yields are also typically very low. There are many types of savings bonds: Series I Bonds: They are sold at face value and grow with inflation-indexed earnings for up to 30 years. You can purchase any amount up to $5,000 per calendar year. Series HH Bonds: They are purchased at face value in $500 and $10,000 denominations but do not increase in value. Why? Because these bonds can only be purchased in exchange for vSeries EE or E Bonds and Savings Notes.

Series EE Bonds: These used to be Series E bonds originally. These are the “classic” bonds that you think of, and the kind that kids typically receive on their eighth birthday to watch it mature by the time they go to college. These bonds are purchased are at a discount of half their face value. They increase in value as interest accumulates during the years. When EE bonds mature or become due, you are paid your original investment plus all your interest accrued. You cannot buy more than $5,000 face value bonds during any given year. There are a lot of tax perks associated with savings bonds. You can defer federal taxes on interest until you cash the bond or it stops paying interest at maturity. You also don’t have to pay any state and local taxes on savings bonds. How’s that for a win, win situation? For more information, visit: www.sec.gov/answers/savingsbond.htm Other Safe Investments? There are certainly other ways to gain money in relatively riskfree fashion. These include investing in U.S. Treasuries (U.S. Government-backed debt). This is debt financing from the U.S.

and they include: Treasury bills, Treasury notes, bonds, and Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS). Note that savings bonds are part of U.S. Treasury options. Treasury investments are highly liquid. Basically, you can treat them as cash. Treasury Bills: Also known as T-Bills, they mature in one year or less, and pay interest only at maturity. They are sold at a discount to par. Many people consider Treasury Bills as the least risky investment within the U.S. The minimum purchase value is $100. Treasury Notes: These are like T-Bills but have a longer date to maturity, typically two to ten years. They pay you a coupon payment every six months and commonly mature in 2, 3, 5 or 10 years. Treasury Bonds: These have the longest maturity period, typically 10 to 30 years. They also pay a coupon payment every six months like the T-Notes. TIPS: These are inflation-protected securities. The principal is adjusted to the Consumer Price Index, which is the most common measure of inflation. The coupon rate is constant but the maturity periods differ from 5, 10 and 20 years. 105

Adventure

The Annual Pahrump Valley Winery Grape Stomp

A

s you may have already guessed, I'm always on the lookout for fun. I have to be. Every time someone I know comes to town

they always ask me "OK, what else is there to do in Vegas besides gamble?" In and around Las Vegas there is an abundance of activities and attractions you might not expect. My job is to find them, experience them and then show the world some great adventures they might never have discovered. Today's adventure: The annual Pahrump Valley Winery Grape Stomp. About 60 miles outside of Las Vegas is the city of Pahrump, Nevada. Along with being the sound a tuba makes, Pahrump is a small town with some colorful residents like Heidi Fleiss, the Hollywood madame that made national news in the mid 90's when a partial list of her clients was released. She now owns a laundromat called "Dirty Laundry." Now, more importantly, it is home to the Pahrump Valley Winery, one of only three or so commercially producing wineries in the state. Any time of year you can go in for a tour and tasting (and believe me it's worth the drive – if you've got a designated driver) but once a year they open the grounds put up booths and a stage and have a good old fashioned grape stomp. On the grounds you can move along from booth to booth and find regular street fair "fare." Different types of food, jewelry, wine related novelties, face painting for the kids and lots of music. And of course, on the main stage, the 'Big Show'; the Grape Stomp competition. I was lucky enough to be invited to host and introduce the competition. I think there is really only one way to do a grape stomp...in full Lucille Ball attire! I donned my peasant frock and scarf, curled up my red hair, pulled the back of my skirt up between my legs to tuck it in the front and amid Winery owner, Bill Lokin's introduction and commentary I commenced stomping as the Baja Men's 'Who Let the Dogs Out' blasted out a frantic pace. I finished my 'exhibition round' and the contest began. As the participants lined the stage and stomped their hearts 106

Visit Roni at www.getawayforaday.tv out for the coveted trophy in several rounds of competition, the onlookers cheered and laughed and I snuck away and sampled the wines. They had several wines from their vineyard out for tasting and between chatting and taking pictures with the crowd I tried them all. They had great deals in their shop and after one of the best outings I've had this year, I left with new friends, great memories and two cases of some great wine. To get this look I wore Hawaiian Tropic's "Island Radiance" self tanner in medium-dark for an all over glow, Physicians Formula Tinted moisturizer along with their multi-colored Light Bronzer Powder Palette for a perfectly even complexion, Physicians Formula Multi-colored blush in Blushing Natural, Maybelline Great Lash mascara...my favorite, Almay's Whipped gloss in "Shining Bare over a red lipstick, and finally, I pin-curled my hair and set with styling spritz.

People in Relationships Are Generally Happier

People in relationships are generally happier than other people, a new Cornell University study finds. And spouses have the highest sense of well-being, whether they are happily married or not. The study of measures of well-being and happiness found that people who cohabit are next on the scale of happiness, followed by those in steady relationships and then those in casual relationships. Unpartnered people report the lowest levels of well-being. The bottom line, say the Cornell researchers, is that having a romantic relationship makes both men and women happier -- and the stronger the relationship’s commitment, the greater the happiness and sense of well-being of the partners. “Some commitment appears to be good, but more commitment appears to be even better,” said Claire Kamp Dush, a postdoctoral fellow with the Evolving Family Theme Project of the Institute for Social Sciences at Cornell and first author of one of the few studies to examine well-being across the relationship continuum. The study was published in a recent issue of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (22:5, 2005). Interestingly, even those in relatively unhappy marriages appear to benefit from being married, Kamp Dush said, perhaps because they benefit from marriage’s stability, commitment and social status. “Even when controlling for relationship happiness, being married is associated with higher self-esteem, greater life satisfaction, greater happiness and less distress, whereas people who are not in stable romantic relationships tend to report lower self-esteem, less life satisfaction, less happiness and more distress,” she explained. “In general, people appear to feel better about themselves and their lives when they move into a more committed relationship,” she added. In analyzing whether happier individuals are more likely to enter into committed relationships or if committed relationships actually improve well-being, the researchers found that moving into committed relationships makes people happier. “Those most likely to move into more committed relationships were actually those who reported lower levels of well-being when first surveyed,” Kamp Dush said. “Therefore, if they were using committed relationships as a strategy to improve their well-being, it appeared to work.” Kamp Dush and co-author Paul Amato of Pennsylvania State University analyzed data from the study of Marital Instability Over the Life Course that included telephone interviews with 691 individuals in 1992 and 1997. Well-being was assessed with measures of self-esteem, life satisfaction, general happiness and distress symptoms. Studying romantic relationships – which range from casual dating to marriage – is important, Kamp Dush noted, because such relationships have the potential to affect people’s mental health, physical health, sexuality and financial status. The study was supported, in part, by the National Institute on Aging and the Population Research wInstitute of Pennsylvania State University with core support from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
