Show off Some Style This Season

Regardless of the type of festivities you are planning to attend … the office party, a Sunday morning holiday cookie swap, a casual celebration outing with drinks and little dishes or an intimate cocktail party to toast the year past with your best girlfriends, you should create outfits that are flirty, fun and festive. Go ahead, dress up and show up!

Great Tips Here are some tips to make sure your holiday looks are polished and pretty: • Make sure you feel comfortable in what you are wearing. If you don’t feel at ease in the outfit you will have a difficult time relaxing and enjoying the party. It is a good idea to try on the complete outfit a few days before the event to make sure everything is in its place and you feel great wearing it. If you’re comfortable, you’re confident. • If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, then just update your classic black cocktail dress with funky patterned or sexy lace black stockings. Go bare-legged and wear a simple black heel allowing your legs to be centerstage. You may want to get two

14

pairs of stockings just in case you rip or get a run/snag before you leave the house. Although the patterned and laced stockings are a bit heavier then typical panty hose, they still have the potential to snag and rip. • If you bought a new pair of fancy heels, take a fork and score the bottom of the shoe. This will help give the shoe a little bit of traction and will make sure you won’t slip on a slippery floor or smooth carpet. Or, you could just wear the shoes around the house while you are practicing your dance moves. The goal is to make sure that the bottom of the shoe is a little rough to provide traction when you walk. • Like everything less is more. Don’t be afraid to go for the sparkly, metallic or shimmery, just don’t over do it. If you are going for the eye popping metallic shoes you want to keep your jewelry and other accessories simple. If it is the sparkle of your jewelry that you want to shine then keep your shoes and purse more subtle. • Don’t underestimate the power of the right undergarments. The right foundation garments whether it’s shapeware or a bra, help smooth, firm and put things where they belong. • When having difficulty finding the right holiday attire, remember the little black dress is perfect for almost any event and really flatters almost any body type.

Dear Bio-Oil I picked up Bio-Oil on a whim while walking through CVS/pharmacy. The product works. I am 47 years old and I have a few stretch marks, a couple of old faded scars, and dark bags under my eyes. After using Bio-Oil the appearance of the stretch marks is better, the bags are less noticeable (I get compliments all the time now on how young my face looks) and the scars also look way better. I will continue to buy Bio-Oil. It works. Regards Phenix Hall

Gam It Up! Be it with bold patterns, solid color or metallic mesh, dresses are short – the shorter the better. Definitely above the knee but mid-thigh preferred. Celebs are glamin’ up their gams by showing off bare legs. The well-toned and well-tanned legs being exposed mid-thigh give the legs a sense of being long and lanky. The midthigh dresses help to give the legs an appearance of being longer. This helps several extra-petite stars give the illusion of added height – of course, four-inch heels also help. But, celebs like Joss Stone, Amber Valletta and Jada Pinkett Smith know if you’re going to show it off it better look good. It is essential to make sure the legs are perfectly and evenly tanned – those self-tan sprays and moisturizers are perfect for the job. Their legs are also tight and well-toned. No baggy knees or cankles here. To get great looking gams, these girls know the secret is lots of squats, calf-raises and lunges. Besides hitting the gym to get your legs in shape, it is also easy to achieve the soft, silky legs you see – the secret – exfoliating. While in the shower, soap up your bath loofa very well. Sprinkle a little sugar on your loofa and give your legs a nice scrub down. You’ll be able to feel the sugar crystals but they dissolve quickly and you’re left with a thick, foamy cream. You’ll see that it looks like shaving cream. Shave as usual. Then rinse. Apply your favorite lotion, or for an extra silky feel, a little baby oil. Now don your mid-thigh dress and show off those great looking legs.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Amber Vallette taking advantage of the trend for wearing bold colors. It is not surprising that actress/ model Amber Valletta OWNED this orange dress. Notice her clutch bag – the “it” bag this season. Amber showed off her legs with the mid-thigh mini at the premiere for the movie The Spy Next Door.

The ever-stylish Jada Pinkett Smith owned the red carpet with her metallic beaded dress at the Berlin premiere of the movie Karate Kid. The shorter dress and bare legs gave the petite actress a fabulous appearance of added height. Her metallic gold clutch is the perfect compliment to her outfit.

Ariel Winter

Actress Kerry Washington, best known for her role as Ray Charles’ wife in the film Ray, adds bold strokes of color to her above-the-knee simple-silhouette dress. She also takes advantage of the very popular metallic clutch. Kerry was a splash at the premiere for the movie Mother And Child.

English R & B singer Joss Stone at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin combined two trends: a graphic, bold-colored mini-dress with boots. As the shoe of the season, boots can be worn with anything and are the perfect compliment to all outfits vfrom the shortest of dresses to long flaired-out pants.

Ariel was deďŹ nitely mod in her mid-thigh dress. Since the dress had a bold pattern, she minimized the jewelry and kept the hair simple. The star was certainly a red carpet do at the premiere for the movie The Spy Next Door.

You have the perfect outfits planned. You know how you are going to bump up your makeup a notch. So why not do something different with your hair to complete your festive look? We asked professional hairstylist Inga Provolovich to help us create some easy to do hairstyles that will definitely dress up your daily style. TIPS: It is easier and better to style your hair the day after you washed it. It helps it set better. It is better to use a very curling iron because it helps to style the

hair faster and is easier to set. The size of the curling iron barrel depends on how tight or loose you want the curl. For tight curls use a smaller barrel and for loose curls a bigger barrel. Always slide the iron completely through the hair to make sure the ends are nice and smooth – creating the perfect polished curl. When applying hairspray, try to extend arm holding the hairspray as far away from your hair as you can. You don’t want to spray too close to your hair because that will cause that hard helmet look and feel. To get get bobby pins to stay in your hair. Criss cross the pins over each other in order to keep them secure and in place. The 80’s First dry your hair completely. With your head flipped over apply a setting lotion or hairspray all over your hair. Flip head back and comb through and separate section by section to make it easier to create spiral curls. Start at the root and curl hair sections with curling iron. Be sure to roll the hair on the curling iron in the direction you want your hair to go. If you want a tighter wave to the look then just curl smaller sections. Then flip head over again and run fingers through hair to loosen the curls and separate the strands. Flip head back and finish with a little hairspray to set the style.

Beautiful Bun First, if you want height in the front then you need to tease the hair a little bit. Comb hair to the side low on the nape of your neck. This will ensure you get the bun really low. Make a ponytail and the roll the hair around the ponytail holder. Tuck the ends under and pin. This will prevent the ends from sticking out. This look is best for those whose hair length is below their shoulders.

Take a section and using a curling iron curl the hair under. Once the section of hair is curled pin it to your head to hold the curl until you have done your entire head. To get the true vintage look, part your hair on the side before curling. Then let hair set for 5 to 10 minutes. Check one of the pin curls.

38

If the hair doesn’t take the curl leave the pin curls in place a little longer. Then take down the pin curls gently starting at the nape of your neck and brush lightly through while continuing to curl the ends under. Use your hands to smooth out the hair, because your hands have a natural oil which will help avoid frizzy hair. To make sure you keep the spiral curl don’t run your hands through your hair. To get a little more curl around your face use curling iron and curl lightly.

Party Chic Nothing looks more striking then completely straight hair. And it really isn’t that hard to achieve. Put most of your hair on top of your head so that you have just two sections, one on each side, in the back. Put these sections into a tight ponytail. Spray your hands with hairspray and run them through the ponytail. Then take the hair from the top of your head and tease it a bit. This prevents your hair from lying very flat on your head. You want to tease it to the point that when you smooth it down you will still have some height. Once it is teased then use a paddle brush to smooth hair. Put a little straightening lotion in your hands and apply to your hair lightly. Use a flat iron to polish off the straight hair. Then lightly use hairspray all over.

According to professional makeup artist Rochelle Lee, the purpose of foundations, blushes, bronzers and highlighters are to make the face look natural. The goal is look like you aren’t wearing anything on your face and still look pretty.

R

egardless of what you are applying to your face, it is essential to blend it thoroughly into the skin. For instance, when you apply blush you don’t want to see where the blush starts and stops; you want it to blend into the skin and look subtle. Lee also advises that you start with less product and add more as needed. It is much harder to take away foundation, bronzer or blush after it has been applied; so begin with a small amount and continue to add to achieve the desired color or appearance. Below are Lee’s tips and tricks when it comes to all things face – foundations, blushes, bronzers and highlights.

FOUNDATION

Tips To Find Find The Right Foundation

When you are buying foundation it is very important to know your skin type – oily, dry, combination. This is important because the type of skin you have will determine the type of foundation you should use.

Lee says it is essential to test the foundation to make sure you get the right shade for your skin color. Lee explains that she likes to test the foundation colors on a woman’s shoulder rather than her jaw line. This is because the chest isn’t exposed as much as the face to the sun and is a little darker – our true natural color.

If you have very oily skin you should steer clear of liquid moisturizer type foundations. You need a cream or oil-free foundation. You also want to definitely set your foundation with powder. If you have very dry skin do not set your foundation with powder because it will make a cakey appearance on the skin. If you have combination skin you can use any kind of foundation because your skin is normal. You can also use powder to set your foundation. Foundation Application Tips

For instance, some women who look a little pink in their faces, when you look at the darker skin on the chest you can see that they actually have yellow undertones. It makes it a lot easier to get a better color match when you use the chest to test the foundation colors. If you have yellow undertones, you want to use a foundation that has yellow undertones. If you have pink undertones, you want to use a foundation that has pink undertones. It is important to match the foundation exactly to your skin color.

Instead of a foundation brush, Lee likes to use a sponge that is dampened with water before using it to apply the foundation. She explains that this makes the foundation easier to apply as well as helping to smooth and spread out it helping to make it more even and natural looking.

Biggest Mistakes When Applying Foundation

When applying foundation always go down into the neck area. Do not stop at the jaw line. The amount of foundation on your neck should not be as heavy as what you apply on your face.

Women also do not pick the correct type of foundation for their skin type; and, they don’t know how to correctly apply the foundation. Too often women select the wrong type of foundation; for instance, a woman may choose a full coverage foundation when she really doesn’t need it.

B

According to Lee the biggest mistake women make with their foundation is that they pick the wrong color. You want your foundation to exactly match your skin color.

Beauty How-to

There are different types of foundation for different skin types.

use a concealer it should be the same color as your foundation.

If you need light coverage you should use a liquid foundation. This type of foundation is good if you don’t have any skin problems or blemishes and just need to even out the color of your face. You can also use a powder foundation to even out your faces skin color if you don’t need foundation.

It is a myth that your concealer should be a shade or two lighter than your foundation. Lee explains that your eye area isn’t any lighter than the rest of your face. The concealer should be the exact same color as your foundation. You will be able to brighten your skin with bronzers and blushes. Lee emphasizes that with concealer you must really blend it properly.

If you need full coverage you should use a cream foundation. Lee says she loves cream foundation because when it is applied with a damp sponge as you blend it in you can get a very sheer appearance but still get the full coverage. For oily skin you want to use a matte cream foundation. This type of foundation will help to absorb the oil from your face before you apply your makeup. For dry skin it is best to use a liquid foundation. For normal to dry skin it is best to use a tinted moisturizer. This is very sheer and will just even out skin color. For oily and combination skin it is best to use an oil-free foundation. Foundation Vs. Concealer It is okay to use your foundation as your concealer. Concealer is basically the same as a full-coverage foundation. If you do

BLUSH Blush should be used to brighten the face. Blush should make your face look brighter and healthier. After you apply some blush, even when you are exhausted, you can still look invigorated and alive. Blush should be applied after you apply your foundation and set it with powder. After you apply your foundation, your skin is all one neutral color so now you need to add a little color to your face and blush is what you use. Blush Application Tips When you are applying blush you want to start at the top of your ear and then move the brush down to the part of your cheek that lines up with the center of your eye. You want to apply the blush in a slant. It is easier if you angle the brush at the start of the application.

You want to use a brush that is specifically designed to apply blush. It will be angles because it helps with the application and placement of the blush because it is not oversize.

Beauty How-to

Biggest Mistakes When Applying Blush When many women apply blush they start at the center of the cheek and go backwards. Besides putting the blush on the wrong part of the face, women do not select the correct color and have a tendency to apply too much. BRONZER Like blush, bronzer is designed to brighten the face; but unlike blush, bronzer may be used all over the face. Bronzer should be applied as a way to enhance the color of the face. Bronzer Application Tips When applying bronzer, it is important to use a big fluffy brush, like a powder brush. You want a brush that has lots of movement. You don’t want to use a stiff brush because it will hold too much of the bronzer. You want to apply the bronzer in a type of number 3 movement. Start at your hairline in the middle of your eyebrow and go down the side of your face to the top of the ear. Go half way in on the cheek and then come back to the hairline and go down to your jaw line.

Biggest Mistakes When Applying Bronzer You don’t want to use bronzer like blush. You want to wear bronzer to give an appearance of lightly tanned skin and looks very natural. Bronzer comes in light, medium and dark shades, and come with or without shimmer. Lee explains that there are many different types of bronzer and you should select what you like. She likes to use a matte bronzer because it doesn’t have any shimmer; and then, she can use a highlighter on specific parts of her face. HIGHLIGHTS A highlight or shimmer provides a little extra shine to specific parts of the face. It can come as compressed or loose powder. The ideal to apply highlights to the center of the nose, just below the brow and around the outer part of the eye. It is important to use a small brush, so you don’t use too much highlight. You want to use a small amount of shimmer and apply lightly in the key areas. Biggest Mistakes When Applying Highlights It is harder to use a shimmer that comes as loose powder; because, you get a lot on the brush and if you don’t know how to apply it, you will make your entire face shiny.

Donatella Arpaia is one of the most influential women in the world of food and has redefined the role of the modern-day restaurateur with such successful launches as David Burke & Donatella, Anthos, Kefi, Eos and her most recent, Mia Dona. The Zagat guide called her “The Hostess with the Mostest.” Reinventing Beauty™ caught up with Donatella to get some of her entertaining strategies. “I find an evening-long cocktail party is the most modern way to entertain,” said Donatella. “It is partly a reflection of the small-plate trend on restaurant menus and also a matter of practicality.”

“Many who are new to entertaining don’t have the gear or the real estate to seat more than eight people comfortably. For an evening-long cocktail party, a mix of light and substantial hors d’oeuvres is a must, as is a tantalizing spread of hors d’oeuvre-size desserts from your favorite bakery.” We asked Donatella to share with us the recipes of some of her favorite hors d’oeuvres.

G P I’ll be honest with you, unless I have a party coming up, my refrigerator isn’t exactly overflowing. Maybe you can relate? This is partly because I’m always at the restaurants, and I tend to wind up eating whatever the chefs can toss together while they’re closing the kitchen. One night, with barely any effort, Michael Psilakis did what comes so naturally to him: He tapped into his Greek culinary roots and took off from there. These little pizzas are, honestly, to die for. SERVES 4 4 pocketless pitas 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup fig jam 1/2 pound halloumi cheese, cut into 1/4” slices 2 cups baby arugula Juice of 1 lemon 2 teaspoons dried oregano Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 fresh figs, halved lengthwise 350°. Brush both sides of the pitas with 1/4 cup of the olive oil and place on a baking sheet. Bake about 10 minutes, until golden and crisp. Let cool slightly. meanwhile, turn on the broiler and set the rack 6” from the heat source. spread the pitas with the fig jam, then top each with some halloumi. Slide the pitas under the broiler for about 3 minutes, until the halloumi is melted. put the arugula in a large bowl, add the lemon juice and remaining 1/4 cup olive oil, and toss to thoroughly coat all of the leaves. Season with the oregano, salt, and pepper. Divide the arugula among the pitas. Top each with two fig halves. Arrange on a platter, and serve.

One bite and I’m taken back to my Long Island grade school, where I was the only student with immigrant parents. I went by Donna in an attempt to assimilate, but instead of packing a PBJ in a Farrah Fawcett lunch box, my mother sent me off with foil-wrapped fritters stuffed into a brown paper bag. Despite the fact that I whined for a more mainstream lunch, I secretly loooved these. Today, I beg my mother to make them. Hers are without question the best, but mine are a pretty close second. She never grates the zucchini (which I am always tempted to do because it’s quicker--alas, results in a watery batter), but rather cuts the zucchini into almost confetti-like pieces. The tinier the zucchini pieces, the better. Use a food processor with the fine-dice attachment for the best results, or cut by hand the way my mom does it. SERVES 4 TO 6 4 medium zucchini, finely diced 2 eggs, lightly beaten 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley 1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 3/4-1 cup all-purpose flour Olive oil Combine the zucchini, eggs, parsley, Parmigiano, and extra-virgin olive oil and stir until the zucchini is coated. Season generously with salt and pepper. Add 3/4 cup of the flour just a sprinkle at a time and stir. Continue adding until the mix is the consistency of pancake batter, add more if the zucchini is very wet. Fill a large, heavy-bottomed pan with 1/4” olive oil. heat over medium heat until hot but not smoking. Working in batches, spoon the zucchini mixture into the pan in 2-tablespoon mounds. The fritters should be three-quarters submerged in the oil. If bits of zucchini stray, scoop them up and return them to the fritters. Reduce the heat slightly and fry until golden brown, turning once, about 5 minutes per side. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Allow the oil to return to medium heat before proceeding with the next batch. Serve the fritters on a parchment-lined tray. the leftover fritters will keep, covered and refrigerated, up to 2 days. Reheat, wrapped in foil, in a low oven.

B B R If you’re not already BFFs with the guy or girl behind the cheese counter, this dish should be the start of a lifelong friendship. I say this because it’s essential that you use high-quality fresh ricotta (preferably buffalo ricotta; if you can’t get it, go for sheep’s milk ricotta)--not the kind you get in a tub at the supermarket. It’s the principal ingredient in this dish, so it has to be the best. I first tasted buffalo ricotta in Naples, on a visit to Rita De Rosa, a well-known Neapolitan cook. I loved that she baked the ricotta in humble foil--and each time she made it she put different ingredients in the packet. Tomatoes, olives, fresh oregano, basil--whatever she had on hand was fair game. To this day, I make it in foil and serve it that way, too, to raves. SERVES 4 TO 6 Extra-virgin olive oil 8 ounces fresh buffalo or sheep’s milk ricotta 4-5 cherry tomatoes, halved lengthwise Fresh oregano leaves Fleur de sel and freshly ground black pepper 8-12 slices rustic Italian bread 450°. Drizzle a bit of olive oil onto the center of an 8” x 11” sheet of foil and spread it all over with your fingers. Spoon the ricotta onto the center, spreading it into a small square. Arrange the cherry tomatoes on top, followed by the oregano. Season with the salt and pepper. Oil a second 8” x 11” sheet of foil and place over the ricotta. Fold the foil into a packet, leaving about a 1/4” border around the cheese. Remember, you’ll be serving directly from the packet, so neatness counts. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until piping hot throughout. Meanwhile, using tongs, “grill” the bread slices on both sides over a gas flame or by placing the bread directly on the coils of an electric burner, taking care not to let them char. To serve, use the tip of a knife to cut an “X” into the top of the packet and fold back the points to reveal the cheese. Place on a wooden cutting board and serve with the grilled bread.

Italians don’t really go for fruit in savory dishes, preferring to eat it fresh and whole after the evening meal. Though this combination of tiny balls of mozzarella and peaches may never have shown up on one of my Puglian aunts’ tables, I can just hear them saying “Ahhhhh, l’Americana,” and know they would come to love it although they wouldn’t admit it. Fresh peaches are a must; if they’re not ripe they obviously won’t taste good and they won’t come loose from the pit easily. Store any leftover bocconcini in the container you purchased them in, covered in water. I’ve made this salad on the fly without grilling the peaches and it is still very good. SERVES 4 TO 6 4 ripe peaches, halved, pitted, and each half cut into 3 wedges 1 pound bocconcini, packed in water 20 small basil leaves plus more for garnish 2 medium shallots, finely chopped 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Brush a cast-iron stovetop grill pan with a little olive oil and heat over high heat. grill the peach wedges about 2 to 3 minutes per side, until nicely charred. Transfer them to a large bowl and add the bocconcini, basil, shallots, olive oil, and vinegar. Toss gently until everything is well coated. Season with salt and pepper and set aside at room temperature for 15 minutes. Divide among salad plates or transfer to a rimmed platter. Garnish with the basil leaves and serve.

Donatella Tip: Olive Etiquette One of my biggest party pet peeves is the olive bowl aftermath. If you’ve ever walked around a party clutching a napkin full of pits and toothpicks, you know what I’m talking about. I’m a stickler for serving olives on the pit (otherwise they tend to be mushy) and just as serious about providing an obvious place to discard those pits. If you don’t want to be the pit police, set out a small, cute bowl near the olives – and put a few pits in it as a guide. Restaurant Inside Tip: Speed Rack Take a tip from your favorite bartender and set up a speed rack. It’s simply a lineup of one bottle of the most-requested liquor – vodka, gin, tequila, rum – and one bottle of each type of mixer – sour mix, tonic, soda water, cranberry and orange juices. A bartender places it directly in front of where he/she does the most bartending so that the drink making goes quickly. Arrange small glasses of garnishes such as lime and lemon wedges and twists and olives nearby.

WHAT MEN WANT

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have great holiday gatherings; but you do need to use a little creativity. There is actually one type of holiday gathering that has been taking place since the 1930s – the cookie exchange.

To host a cookie exchange, you invite a group of friends over to your house to exchange homemade cookies. Every person brings about six-dozen of one type of cookie. The cookies are laid out on the dining room table and exchanged. The result is that everyone goes home with an assortment of different types of cookies. The holidays are a perfect time to host a cookie exchange. While cookies are the focal point of the party, the guests are the real reason to host the party. A cookie exchange enables you to bring people together. Historically, cookie exchange parties have been a ladies-only event. That’s currently changing, as other types of cookie exchange parties are emerging and becoming commonplace. Here are some easy rules to make your cookie exchange a success: • All cookies should be homemade, baked and the main ingredient must be flour. • No plain chocolate chip cookies, no-bakes or meringues. • Make sure guests know the theme, i.e. “Christmas Cookies.” • Tell guests to bring a take-home container to be able to pack up their goodies for easy transport. • Let guests know that Christmas attire is encouraged. Here are a few recipes to get you inspired to create your own holiday cookie exchange.

Party Perfect

C S Now that the cookie exchange has gotten you inspired, there are lots of other holiday parties where you can get your guests to participate – which helps to make the party more fun and cuts down on the cost. Here are a few ideas: H M N

H O H It can be difficult when you live in an apartment, condo or small house. Invite guests to an open house spanning a couple of hours. This way you can celebrate with all your friends without too much crowding. Serve up drinks and simple d’oeuvres.

Rent classic holiday movies from your local library and invite people over to watch. Each guest brings a favorite movie snack: Goobers, M&M’s or Lemonheads. You supply the popcorn and turn on the feature presentation. Avoid the cost of serving wine and beer by making a big bowl of Crystal Light fruity punch.

H R P

S P There are lots of other items other than cookies that could be the focal point of an exchange party that would be perfect for the holidays. These include:

Throw a tree-trimming party. Invite your friends over for some festive fun. Shop ahead of time for inexpensive décor. Top off your party with a heaping plate of holiday cookies and hot cocoa.

• An add-on to the cookie exchange is to have everyone bring her favorite flavored or gourmet coffee. Starbucks makes some great rich flavors that are sure to compliment any cookie.

H H D’

• Wine, gourmet cheese, tea, main-course dishes, appetizers, soup swaps etc. • Dip it. Have everyone bring his/her favorite dip. If a guest needs suggestions on a dip to bring, suggest she start with a bottle of Kraft salad dressing for inspiration. You supply the pita bread, chips and Ritz Crackerful crackers. • Books you’ve already read. DVDs you’ve already watched. • Plants, herbs and vegetables from your garden. • A glamour swap. Trade new or barely used clothes, jewelry, handbags, shoes and accessories. Inform everyone to bring 5 new or like-new items. S S G E Play Secret Santa or do a White Elephant instead of gifting everyone you know (but make sure you play with desirable gifts).

64

Don’t have the money to pull together a party by the end of the year? Start planning one for January when your budget may not be so strapped. Your friends will also likely have more time in their schedule. H D P

Have each guest bring a favorite appetizer to serve. To get you started here is an easy-to-make appetizer, the famous chicken satay, from Phillipe Chow’s chi-chi South Beach restaurant, Phillipe Miami. It is the perfect pre-meal bite to impress your guests. For added flair, ask guests to bring a few bottles of their favorite wine and create your own wine tasting event. It will be fun to hear what others think about the wine. C S 2 large chicken breasts cut into thin strips 1 cup of flour ½ cup of corn starch 5 eggs 2 T of Canola oil 1 cup carrot juice 8” bamboo skewers Oil for frying or san searing Directions: Cut chicken into desired thin strips. Combine the flour, corn starch, eggs, canola oil and carrot juice. Mix with your hands until ingredients are incorporated. Throw the chicken strips in and let marinate for 8 hours. Remove the marinade and skewer the chicken. Place chicken in a pan for 4 minutes (2 minutes/side). Serve with your favorite peanut sauce.

The weather outside is frightful. Sitting on your couch all warm and cozy is delightful. In cold weather the last thing you want to do is get up and make the trek to the gym. Because weather should never be an excuse not to exercise, Liza Carmona, co-owner of Miami’s The Pilates Studio has created a full-body workout that just requires a simple Flex-band, and for you to get off the couch. Okay, you may also have to move the couch a little to create some space. Don’t be fooled thinking a workout using just a flexible piece of rubber couldn’t be a real workout. Using her expertise in Pilates, Liza created a workout that is centrally focused on using and strengthening your core; but, Liza also makes sure all of your large muscles benefit from this workout. It is time to get off the couch, hit the floor and get to work!

Pilates works several muscle groups simultaneously through smooth, continuous motion with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing

the core (the abdomen, back and pelvic region – sometimes referred to as the powerhouse). Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates, who developed the exercise regimen back in the 1920s. With a background in yoga, Zen meditation, martial arts, Pilates devised a unique sequence of movements that worked the muscles in harmony. The focus is on the quality of movement rather than quantity. Pilates takes a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked.

Understanding Diabetes What is it And How is it Treated By Michelle Goodman Diabetes is a disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. The blood always contains glucose because it provides your body with energy. But, too much glucose in the blood isn’t good for your health. Glucose comes from the food you eat. Your blood carries the glucose to the body’s cells. Insulin is a chemical that the pancreas releases to assist the glucose in reaching the cells. If your body’s production of insulin is compromised it is very difficult to get the essential glucose to the cells. Instead, the glucose stays in your blood and when the level of glucose in your blood gets too high it can cause pre-diabetes or the onset of diabetes. There are mainly three types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, formerly called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is usually first diagnosed in children, teenagers, or young adults. In this form of diabetes, the pancreas can no longer make insulin. Treatment for Type 1 diabetes requires taking insulin on a regular basis. Type 2 diabetes, formerly called adult-onset diabetes or noninsulin dependent diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes. This type of diabetes usually begins with insulin resistance, a condition in which the body does not properly use insulin. At first, the pancreas is able to keep up with the increased amount of insulin the body requires; but, in time the pancreas loses the ability to secrete enough insulin. Being overweight and inactive increases the chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. Treatment requires taking specific medications. Some women develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is caused by the hormones of pregnancy and results in a shortage of insulin. Although it is likely that this type of diabetes typically goes away after the baby is born, a

74

woman who has had gestational diabetes has a higher potential of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life. Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but are not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. People with pre-diabetes are at an increased risk to develop Type 2 diabetes. However, if you have pre-diabetes, you may delay and reduce your risk or prevent Type 2 diabetes with weight loss and physical activity. Y ou may even assist in getting your body’s levels of glucose back to normal. It is important if you have diabetes to check your blood’s glucose levels throughout the day. There are a number of devices that use only a drop of blood for the test and are easy to self-administer. This monitoring helps to tell how well diet, medication, and exercise are working together to control your diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes cannot make their own insulin; so, they need to give the body insulin through daily injections. Injections are needed one to four times per day. Some use an insulin pump; this is worn all the time and delivers a steady flow of insulin. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes may be controlled with diet, exercise and some medication. During digestion, sugars (simple carbohydrates) and starches (complex carbohydrates) break down to produce glucose. To assist the body in producing the required amount of glucose, it is good to focus on the healthiest carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes (beans, peas and lentils) and low-fat dairy products. Dietary fiber includes all parts of plant foods that your body can’t digest or absorb. Fiber can decrease the risk of heart disease and help to control the blood sugar level. Foods high in fiber include vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes (beans, peas and

lentils), whole-wheat flour and wheat bran. Eat heart-healthy fish at least twice a week. Fish can be a good alternative to high-fat meats. Cod, tuna and halibut, for example, have less total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol than do meat and poultry. Fish such as salmon, mackerel and herring are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which help to promote heart health by lowering the level of triglycerides (fat) in the blood. Foods containing monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats — such as avocados, almonds, pecans, walnuts, olives, and canola, olive and peanut oils — may help to lower cholesterol. However, be aware that all fats are high in calories. Because carbohydrates break down into glucose, they have the greatest impact on glucose levels. It’s important to make sure the time and amount of carbohydrates eaten are regulated, especially if you take diabetes medication or insulin. Carbohydrates can cause your glucose levels to greatly fluctuate. Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by accelerating development of clogged and hardened arteries. Foods containing the following may work against your goal of a heart-healthy diet. Saturated fats. High-fat dairy products and animal proteins such as beef, hot dogs, sausage and bacon contain saturated fats. Get no more than 7 percent of your daily calories from saturated fat. Trans fats. These types of fats are found in processed snacks, baked goods, shortening and stick margarine and should be avoided completely. Cholesterol. Sources of cholesterol include high-fat dairy products and high-fat animal proteins, egg yolks, shellfish, liver and other organ meats. Aim for no more than 200 mg of cholesterol a day.

• being African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, or Pacific Islander • having high blood pressure • having conditions associated with insulin resistance • having a history of cardiovascular disease Exercise offers many positive benefits. It may lower blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and strengthen heart muscles. Aerobic exercise has significant benefits for people with Type 1 diabetes. It increases sensitivity to insulin, lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, and decreases body fat. The American Diabetes Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity. Strength training, which increases muscle and reduces fat, is also helpful for people with diabetes Physical activity plays a very important part in preventing Type 2 diabetes. A government study, the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), showed that modest weight loss of 5 to 7 percent— 10 to 15 pounds for a 200-pound person—may delay and possibly prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes. People in the study used diet and exercise to lose weight.

Sodium. Aim for less than 2,000 mg of sodium per day.

• feeling very hungry or tired

The American Diabetes Association recommends that testing to detect pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes be considered in adults without symptoms but, who are overweight and have one or more of the risk factors. In those without any risk factors, testing for diabetes should begin at age 45.

• losing weight without trying

Additional risk factors that may cause pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes include:

• losing the feeling in your feet

• being physically inactive

• having sores that heal slowly • having dry, itchy skin

• having tingling in your feet • having blurry eyesight

• having a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes

Diagnosis

Diagnosis & Prevention: Stress Relief ‘Tis the season for parties, shopping, entertaining, family gatherings and decorating. Although the holidays may be full of excitement and promise, this time of year also brings an unwanted gift – stress. Around Halloween people begin to feel the clock ticking and that there is not enough time to fit in everything. We often have higher expectations for the holidays than any other time of year, which places even more pressure on us and increases the likelihood we may end up feeling very stressed out.

78

Stress is an emotional and physical response to pressure from the outside world. It is important to know how to relieve stress for your health and well-being. You fight a cold. You bandage a cut. You get rid of a headache. The point is if something impacts you negatively, you do something about it. Stressing brings a negative impact, so do something about it. Don’t allow stress to build and certainly don’t let it steal the joy of the the holiday season. There are sveral very effective and practical tips you can use to minimize common holiday stress.

RECOGNIZE HOLIDAY TRIGGERS Learn to recognize common holiday triggers, so you can avoid the stress they may cause. • Relationships. Relationships absolutely cause conflict and stress at any time; but, tensions are often increased during the holidays. Family misunderstandings and conflicts can intensify – especially if you’re together for several days. • Finances. With the added expenses of gifts, travel, food and entertainment the holidays can put a strain on your budget – and piece of mind. Not to mention that overspending now can mean financial stress for months to come. • Physical Demands. Even holiday enthusiasts can find the extra shopping and socializing leave them wiped out. Being exhausted increases your stress.

TIPS TO PREVENT HOLIDAY STRESS If you know that the holidays have taken a toll on you in the past, try to prevent the stress before it begins. • Be Realistic. The holidays don’t have to be perfect or just like what you see on TV or the movies. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones.

TOP 10 STRESS-TRIGGERS Finances Health issues Marriage – relationships Career pressures Parenting – family Aging parents Legal issues Scheduling – “to do” list Education Transportation

80

• Set Aside Differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they don’t live up to all your expectations. Be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something doesn’t go right. Chances are they are feeling the effects of holiday stress too. • Learn To Say No. Saying yes when you should say no can leave your feeling resentful and overwhelmed. • Don’t Abandon Healthy Habits. Don’t let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgences only add to your stress and guilt. Have a healthy snack, like a South Beach Living Bar®, before holiday parties so that you don’t go overboard on sweets or drinks. • Take A Breather. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Studies show that 10 to 20 minutes a day of quiet reflection or meditation can bring relief from stress. As you head into the holiday season, take steps to prevent the stress that can descend during the holidays. With a little planning and some positive thinking, you may find a little more joy this year.

Medicine Cabinet As we head into winter it is a good idea to take stock of your medicine cabinet and make sure you have everything you need for those winter colds, coughs and flus. Studies have shown that the average person contracts about three colds per year, and those who are in contact with young children get even more. The flu is responsible for approximately 22 million missed school days each year. Stock your medicine cabinet with a supply of single-symptom drugs; however, although a well-stocked medicine cabinet will help to alleviate cold and flu symptoms; it won’t cure a cold or the flu. Also antibiotics are only designed to kill bacteria so they can’t cure the flu virus. The best medicine is plenty of rest and lots of liquids (stay well hydrated and drink plenty of fluids, broths and soups). Besides the correct medicine, it is probably a good idea to stock up on those essentials and toiletries that you use on a regular basis. Who wants to head out at 10:30pm on a cold, chilly night to go grab a tube of toothpaste?

82

Speaking of toothpaste, it is probably a good idea to find one toothpaste that prevents plaque, gingivitis, tartar build-up, cavities and bad breath. Not only does Colgate Total Advanced Whitening® do all this, it also helps to remove and prevent new stains from forming on the teeth with its Dual-silica technology. It is never good when you run out of antiperspirant/deodorant. Lady Speed Stick® offers such a wide variety of antiperspirant/deodorant offerings – from Clinical Proof, Spa, Naturals, 24/7, Inivisible, Stainguard – it will be easy to keep several on hand. Speed Stick even offers products specifically for teen girls. And for the men in your life keep Blade® anti-perspirant and deodorant on hand. Some other products you may want to have on hand are specifically designed to help treat the effects of winter on the skin and body. Sometimes during the winter, the skin needs to be treated extra gently. Johnson & Johnson Purpose Skincare® is perfect for sensitive skin. It is

developed with dermatologists and is gentle enough to clean, refresh and moisturize all skin types. Purpose skincare products are hypoallergenic and non-coredogenic (won’t clog pores.)

It is hard to tell the difference between the flu and common cold symptoms. Both are respiratory illnesses, but are caused by different viruses. Here is a simple breakdown of symptoms to help you determine if you should be treating a cold or the flu.

Old Man Winter We all know that with winter comes cold season. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that keeping hands clean is one of most important steps we can take to prevent spread of infection.

Flu Symptoms • Sudden onset of illness • High fever • Extreme fatigue • Chills

It is suggested that it is best to wash hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds. Colgate-Palmolive’s Softsoap® has created a great campaign Lather Up Good Health, with lots of games and fun activities to help children get in the habit of washing their hands.

• Dry cough • Achy head • Achy muscles

Colgate.com/app/LatherUpForGoodHealth/US/En/Homepage.cvsp

Cold Symptoms • Slow onset of illness • Mild fatigue • No achy muscles • Severe cough

TO FIGHT THE SNIFFLES, BODY ACHES & COUGHS YOUR MEDICINE CABINET SHOULD BE FILLED WITH:

Because cold and flu symptoms are similar, consult your doctor to be sure.

• Acetaminophen • Decongestants with pseudophedrine • Cough suppressants and expectorants

• Low or no fever • No headache • No chills • runny or stuffy nose

Stay Healthy During Flu Season The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you take everyday actions to stay healthy during flu season:

These work well with bodyaches, sore throats, mild headaches and fevers. It is a good idea to opt for medicines that offer a longer duration of relief.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. • Wash your hands with soap and water. Alcoholbased hand sanitizers are also effective. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way. • Stay home if you are sick. And limit contract with other to keep from infecting them. •Disinfect frequently touched surfaces like bedside tables, bathroom surfaces, children’s toys, door knobs, light switches and telephones.

Also, be sure to check for expired medicines. If any are past their expiration dates, the manufacturers will not guarantee their potency. Other good things to stock in the cabinet include: • A good medicated lip ointment with a pain killer to sooth cracked lips • A sinus rinse to keep your nasal passages from drying out • Elastic bandages and a cold compress to relieve pain

D’ U I V D Vitamin D plays a major role in protecting your immune health and is a key ingredient for overall well-being and is beneficial to many body functions. Vitamin D is also known as the “sunshine vitamin” because you get it from being exposed to the sun. It is typically thought of as the vitamin that supports the absorption of calcium for building strong bones and teeth, the maintenance of joint and muscle comfort. Over 500 studies support that Vitamin D is crucial for more than bone health. Vitamin D plays an important role in supporting breast, colon and prostate health. It also promotes the proper functioning of your immune cells by acting like a conductor to an orchestra, communicating with Vitamin D cell receptors throughout the body telling them what to do next. Most of our immune cells have Vitamin D receptors, and when there is adequate Vitamin D available in your body, your immune cells are able to function at their best. As well as in a supplement, Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin found in foods such as fortified milk, oily fish and in some cereals. The reason there is a need for Vitamin D supplements is that despite it being available in food sources and the body’s ability to self-produce this nutrient from sun exposure, Vitamin D

deficiency is a worldwide health problem. Vitamin D comes in two forms: Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is the most effective form for maintaining adequate levels of Vitamin D in the body. Therefore, when choosing a Vitamin D supplement it is important to choose the D3 form. Because of the concern about low Vitamin D levels among infants and children, the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends 400 IU per day of Vitamin D3 taken with food. For healthy adults, a minimum of 1000 IU per day of Vitamin D3 is recommended. Higher doses of Vitamin D may be warranted for those with Vitamin D deficiency or certain health conditions. These levels should be determined by a healthcare professional. It is expected that the new Dietary Reference Intakes for Vitamin D will be released in early 2011, which will likely reflect an increase in the daily requirement for Vitamin D. Despite the importance Vitamin D plays in the over all health of the body, over 70% of all Americans have a Vitamin D deficiency.

Tips and Tricks to Take Great Digital Photos It is essential to remember it is the photographer who takes great photos, not the camera. Here are some tips to make sure you shoot great digital photos of your holiday celebrations. KNOW YOUR CAMERA You buy the latest digital camera. Briefly look through the hundred page camera manual and then throw it aside. Not a good idea. It is important for you to learn the ins and outs of your camera. At least learn how to control the exposure, how to use different camera modes and how to use the flash. LEARN TO CONTROL THE FLASH One of the most important things you need to know about digital photography is to control the flash. For instance, when taking photos outdoors it is sometimes good to turn on the flash to illuminate the subject, especially if he or she is in the shade. On the other hand, sometimes using the flash indoors will result in unnatural skin color and harsh glare in photos. PLAY WITH THE MACRO MODE Today, almost all digital cameras have a macro mode. This setting is ideal for taking close up shots of objects, like flowers. What you

86

do is pick a subject, turn on the macro mode, then get as close to the subject as your camera allows. Make sure you let the camera properly focus before capturing the photo. HOLD THE CAMERA LEVEL A basic rule of photography is to hold the camera level. Since most digital cameras come with a LCD, you can use it to properly frame your photos. PLAY WITH THE ISO SETTING The ISO setting of a camera controls its sensitivity to light. If you’re taking a photo of a still object, like a flower, then always use a low ISO setting. It allows for a longer shutter speed and produces a cleaner image. If you’re shooting a moving object, like a baby playing with a toy, then use a higher ISO setting. The higher ISO setting gives a faster shutter speed and requires less light. HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY CAPACITY Just like you use to have to make sure you had enough roles of film, today you have to make sure you have enough memory capacity in your digital camera. It is terrible to be in the middle of taking photos during a holiday celebration and you realize you have no memory space left.

This

year has certainly gone swiftly for the recently turned 21-year-old Taylor Swift. Her new album Speak Now just came out. She had the top-selling album of 2009, on her way to become the female artist with the most Top 40 singles this decade. She was also named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, won four Grammys, including Album of the Year and got to sing onstage with Stevie Nicks. Taylor is quick to use her own life as the inspiration for her songs. “I can only write about what I’ve been through,” she said. “And a lot has happened in the past two years.” “Everything that happens to me gets put into a song.” This explains the song about Kanye, who famously dissed her at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. “I am really comfortable talking about my personal life in songs,” said Swift. Many of Swift’s songs are about the lessons she’s learned in relationships. She said the most important lesson she’s learned in love is that you can’t predict it or plan for it. “For someone like me who is obsessed with organization and planning, I love the idea that love is the one exception. Love is the one wild card.”

This wasn’t only a big year on the music scene, Swift purchased a new condo which is at the top of a building and very modern. It even has a spiral staircase. Although Swift likes her independence, she is very close to her mother. Swift is also declaring her musical independence too. On her new album, Speak Now, this country singer wrote every song herself. Swift released her self-titled debut in 2006 at age 16. Her follow-up Fearless was the best selling album in 2009. Speak Now features a TMZ-style attack on an unnamed starlet. “She’s an actress/she’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress,” Swift sings on the track “Better Than Revenge.” In the song “Never Grow Up” she writes about moving into a new apartment. “It’s so much colder than I thought it would be,” she sings. Swift continues to be moving swiftly; she isn’t one who is likely to take a little rest and relaxation.

Swift will hit the high seas when she appears aboard the seven-night Western Caribbean cruise, departing January 16, 2011, on the Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas ship.

Q: Do you feel that your early fame has cut you off from experiences that might have fed into your songwriting? Any regrets that you became so successful so young?

Q: Tell us about the song “Mean” on your new album.

Taylor: I heard a quote from Dolly Parton one time and she said that regrets aren’t fair to you because you couldn’t possibly have known then what you know now. And a lot of times I wish I could live life more like her. Just this clarity about how to process regret. But on this particular subject about the path that I chose in life I don’t regret anything. I’m very aware and very conscious of the path I chose, and very aware of the path I didn’t choose.

Taylor: “Mean” is about this – I’m used to criticism because that’s part of what I do, taking criticism. When it’s constructive I have an appreciation for it, but when it crosses a line, and becomes mean, I write songs like that about it. Q: With a young audience following you, is it hard to grow up and write honestly about adult experiences? Taylor: Factoring in millions of people when I’m writing a song is not a good idea. I don’t ever do it. Q: What about in your day-to-day life? Taylor: When I was 8 years old, it mattered what my favorite singer said and wore and expressed opinions about. And if I have a chance to matter to the growth and hopes and wishes of little girls, that’s something I can’t take lightly. So I do factor them in when I’m thinking about what to wear, and what to say, and whether or not to go out to bars. Q: Why did you go without co-writers on Speak Now? Taylor: It originally was inspired by circumstance. I would get inspired to write a song at 3:30 in the morning. There is no co-writer around.

‘‘

And here are the answers to a few questions her fans asked: Fan: What keeps you grounded? Taylor: I stopped reading articles about myself. Even if it’s not bad. I think actively caring about people’s daily perception of you makes you second-guess everything.

Everything that happens to me gets put into a song.” This explains the song about Kanye, who famously dissed her at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Q: Were you trying to prove something to the world as an artist by writing everything yourself? Taylor: I just felt like all these crazy things were happening in my life. Q: Can you give an example? Taylor: Different relationships. Realizations you come to based on the beginning and ending of those relationships and everything you learn in between. You have people come into your life shockingly and surprisingly. You have losses that you never thought you would experience. Q: Are you going to scare boyfriends away because they might end up in one of your songs if things don’t go well? Taylor: The only thing I can say about that is that this is not a surprise that I do this. Everyone has had fair warning. This is my third album. I’ve never been shy or secretive with the fact that if you walk in my life, you may be walking onto a record.

Fan: Are you and Taylor Lautner still friends? Taylor: Absolutely! He’s one of my best friends Fan: Don’t you think it will eventually come back to haunt you, writing dirt about all of your exes? Taylor: I do write nice songs about the guys who are nice to me. Eventually, I am sure one of them will write a response – that’s a pretty scary concept. But I make sure I only write bad songs about the ones who deserve it. TAYLOR TIMELINE

September 2010: MTV Video Awards: Taylor Swift performs new single “Innocent” without interference. The song’s lyrics might be an absolution of – or swipes at – Kanye West. West apologizes for his behavior. August 2010: Wins four awards at Teen Choice Awards; Performs in New Orleans at NFL’s annual kickoff concert. July 2010: Bluewater Productions releases Fame: Taylor Swift comic book. Receives artist of the year award from the National Association of Recording Merchandisers in Chicago. Better to Give than to Receive Spreading the word about the power of giving and the happiness it can bring is something that former President Clinton said he plans to do for the rest of his life. “From watching rich people, poor people and people in between give their time, their money or their things, whatever they have to give, I find people who do it are happier,” said Clinton. Even in tough times, you can still give. We all sit around saying we want to do something, but just don’t know where to begin. To get you started, we have compiled a list of charities and foundations and their volunteer needs. In your journey to find your true calling, there are three things you will need: research, time and patience. F P You will need to find an organization that moves you. Does someone in your family has Alzheimer’s? Do you drive through an underprivileged area every day on your way to work? Did you know a family living in Haiti during the disaster? By finding a group that means something to you or someone close to you, you will find true passion. R Don’t just send in the cash, find out all you can and maybe you’ll want to become involved. Sign up and be part of building that home (Habitat For Humanity) or serving Christmas dinner (Second Serving). P Ask your friends or co-workers to join you in a fundraiser. Invite a family member or associate to a walk-a-thon for breast cancer or to read to the blind. When you immerse yourself into the real meaning of charity, you will feel more invested emotionally. And, you will have the most impact, not to mention fun.

The holiday season is an all out assault on our senses. The music, decorations, lights and delicious seasonal smells assail our sensibilities on every street and in every store. All these try to build greater temptation to buy, buy, buy! But this doesn’t mean you have to splurge and spend, spend, spend.

92

Tips to Maximize Your Spending Power 1. Make a spending plan 2. Know your limits 3. Track your spending 4. Shop with a list 5. Shop early 6. Be an educated consumer 7. Load up your wallet with cash 8. Use credit judiciously 9. Beware of sales pitches

The holidays can have some great savings as retailers work hard to increase sales, so if you’re not careful, you will spend more than you planned. Start with a realistic idea of how much you can spend on all your holiday purchases. Make a list of everything you usually buy, from the gifts to food to entertainment to travel expenses and tally the costs. You have to budget and set a specific dollar limit otherwise your spending just grows and grows and grows. So, before you go gift and food shopping decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. If you don’t have the cash in your pocket, you shouldn’t be buying. You can’t afford it. If you use credit you may be paying off the holiday bills until summer. Your goal should be to be able to pay off your holiday expenses within three months after the holidays, four at the most. Make a list of gift recipients and decide how much you want to spend on each person. If you’re unable to spend as much on gifts then prioritize for whom you really want to buy gifts. Plan ahead and set aside specific days for shopping. Plan your menus and make shopping lists and gift lists. This will help prevent last minute scrambling to buy and not paying attention to your budget. If you prepare to do your holiday shopping early you also will be able to be an educated consumer. Price comparison-shopping further stretches your holiday funds. Fight the urge to get your shopping over quickly. Give yourself time to compare prices and find the best deals. An all out shopping spree leaves you exhausted and tempting you to buy the next thing you see regardless of cost. Last-minute shoppers are unlikely to save money. Of course, this is probably easier said then done; because, most people are frazzled with their jobs and busy holiday schedule. They often work right up until Christmas, so their holiday shopping is done last minute. When you are out shopping leave your credit cards at home. Spend cash. This will force you to budget and makes overspending more obvious. People spend up to a third more when paying with credit instead of cash. There is no emotional attachment to plastic like there is to cash. Even after you create a spending plan, it is important to track your spending. You must keep track of all of your purchases and make sure you’re staying within your budget. Write down everything you spend on holiday clothing, cards, postage, wrapping paper

and decorations. Don’t forget that these holiday expenses add up and need to be included i n your budget. A good way to keep track of what you buy on credit is to deduct all your purchases in your checkbook register that way, when the bill arrives, the money will be in your checking account to pay the bill in full. If you do want to shop with credit cards, then take no more than two with you. These should be low-interest rate credit cards and not the expensive department store cards. The more cards you use, the harder it is to track spending. Use one with a zero balance for purchases you will pay off in full. Use the other for purchases you plan to pay off over the next few months. Don’t fall for credit card offers to “skip a payment.” You’ll just pay more in interest the following month. Watch out for the “buy now and pay later” offers that encourage you to spend money you don’t have. Also, bypass applying for department store credit cards to get a one-time discount. This will help you avoid the holiday blues come January. Follow Santa’s lead. Make a list. Check it twice. Stick to it.

Budget Conscious Gift Ideas

Buy a gift basket for a family. Instead of buying an item for each member of a given family, consider giving them some sort of gift basket or tower. The displays are quite pretty, with presentation never failing to wow. Besides there is lots of variety in these baskets so there is something for everyone. Only get for the kids. This could be more radical, but some families use this strategy. Kids get most of the goodies and adults get simpler and less expensive items. Buy all your holiday gifts and items... for the following year a few days after the current year’s holidays. Everything is on sale at 50% - 75% off. Play Secret Santa ... or decide on launching a gift exchange program, or do a White Elephant instead of gifting everyone you know. This is a great way to keep the holiday budget down if you have a huge extended family. Do it yourself. If you are creative and have the time, why not create your own décor, gifts and cards? If you love baking, your cookies or homemade jam would be perfect for gift baskets.

BeyoncĂŠ Turning Up The Heat

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles has come a long way since her start in the 1990s as the lead singer of the R&B group Destiny’s Child. She is so hot that she has become a one-name wonder.

Beyond her career as a pop singer and songwriter, Beyoncé, 29, has expanded into designing fashions and launching her first fragrance, Heat. The name is definitely appropriate as there is no question that Beyoncé is hot and with her chain of successes she is on fire. She recently was named number 19 on Entertainment Weekly’s Power List, the 50 most powerful entertainers. If there are any doubts about Beyonce’s popularity let the numbers speak for themselves. She has sold 11.3 million albums, 21.2 million U.S. digital tracks sold and has had over 603.2 million You Tube views. To date she has picked up six Grammys – more than any female artist in history. Beyoncé’s love for music started when she was growing up. She enrolled in various performing arts schools. Her talent for singing was discovered by her dance instructor began humming a song and Beyonce finished it, hitting all of the high notes. She was signed to Columbia Records when she was 14 years old. Other than a brief separation of her parents, Beyoncé’s childhood was one of tremendous support and encouragement to pursue her talents by her parents.

‘‘

 goes, success follows. In 2006 she starred in the lead role in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls—receiving two Golden Globe nominations. She launched her fashion line House of Dereon with her mother in 2004. This fall her mother continues to expand the fashion reach of Dereon with a new collection, Miss Tina by Tina Knowles appears exclusively at Wal-Mart. It is easy to see why in 2009 Beyonce earned the cover of Forbes with a story about her Entertainment Empire. In 2010 Forbes ranked her number two on its list of the 100 most powerful and influential celebrities in the world. In addition to promoting her own creations, in the past Beyoncé has appeared in campaigns for L’Oreal, Tommy Hilfiger, Armani and Pepsi. Beyoncé understands that with much success comes much responsibility to give back. “I’ve always felt that you should give because it’s what you can do to help. You don’t do it to get praised. For a long time, being quiet about what I did was a conscious decision,” she said.

I’ve realized that sometimes it helps a cause more if I talk publicly about it. That’s what increases awareness.”

Beyoncé rose to fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of the girl group Destiny’s Child, one of the world’s best selling girl groups of all time. During a hiatus of Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé released her debut solo album Dangerously in Love. It became one of the most successful albums of 2003, earning Beyonce five Grammy Awards. After Destiny’s Child official disbanded in 2005, Beyoncé released her second album B’Day. Her third solo album I am…Sasha Fierce released in late 2008 included the very popular Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It). The album and its singles earned Beyoncé six Grammy Awards, breaking the record for most Grammys won by a female artist in one night. It seems where Beyoncé

While preparing for her role in Dreamgirls, Beyoncé visited a Phoenix House, drug and alcohol treatment center. She donated her entire salary from the film to the organization. This past spring she opened the Beyoncé Cosmetology Center at the Phoenix House to provide opportunities for recovering addicts to learn job skills.

There is also The Survivor Foundation which Beyoncé founded with her family and former bandmate Kelly Rowland to help disaster victims after Hurricane Katrina hit. She also serves as the spokeswoman for Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS), a group that helps young women who have been victims of sex trafficking. Now Beyoncé is no longer quiet about the organizations in which she supports, “I’ve realized that sometimes it helps a cause more if I talk publicly about it. That’s what increases awareness.” Beyoncé continues to push forward with her causes and career. But don’t think she is only about work, in April 2008 she married Jay-Z. Although the rumor about Beyoncé and her husband are having a baby was put to rest by her mother, it is rumored that she is currently working on a party-music album.
