Summer plays with the colors of the Sand, the Sea and all its Coral Hues Finally, our favorite season is here. Warm sun, golden sand, and beautiful, frothy beaches mean swimsuit and summer-wear frolicking. This year is about playing with the colors of the sea: coral hues, navy blue, purples and touches of yellow and gold.

Summer White The Red Carpet Gets White Hot.
Trend Alert Move over color– hello white! There are more celebrities walking the red carpet now who feel that brides are not the only ones who get to wear white for the “big day.” From Sarah Jessica Parker and Penelope Cruz, to Anne Hathaway and Gwyneth Paltrow, Hollywood’s mega stars are all capitalizing on the next big color-less trend. True, w hite dresses are not easy, particularly on pale skin, but there’s nothing to prevent you from getting a healthy, sunless tan these days. Moreover, you’ll see how some celebrities who are sun-shy pull off white dresses with grace and style (the key is to have excellent eye makeup and to exude confidence.) White is a good choice for the summer months because it is a color that reflects heat rather than absorbs it. But it is certainly harder to wear because of the constant worry: will you spill something on it? Here’s a tip: wear white before Labor Day, and always carry a pack of stainremoving wipes in your purse. Then you can dazzle the town as well as a bride on her wedding day. 24

style CROWN OF GLORY Love the Sun? Your Hair Doesn’t.
I
remember when I needed water desperately. Ironically, it was not when
I was on the cusp of crossing a desert. It was actually on a beach, in the middle of summer. Like Tom Hanks in the movie Castaway, I had the endless and exquisite sheet of ocean in front of me, and not enough hydration that my body, hair and skin needed.

The result? My hair was fried, as though I had spent a summer in the Sahara, and my skin was parched. Clocking the recovery time, it took my hair much, much longer to spring back from the effects of the sun than my skin. Brittleness and faded hair color plagued me for weeks, and my tan was of little comfort when I saw my pricey color job fading away like a Doppler effect. Did I learn my lesson? Sure, and I went back to the salon and asked for a “booster” so this wouldn’t happen again. I also became smarter. Now I don’t just carry sunscreen to the beach now. When you’re by the ocean, all the elements are at work to wreak havoc on your locks: sea water, sea breeze, severe sun and humidity. “Sea water is not great for your hair,” says Mordechai Alvow, a celebrity stylist whose work has been featured in major media and at international

runways. “If you’re a swimmer, the chlorine in the pool is the worst for you. Also, the sun’s rays have a frying effect on your hair.”
Crown of Glory
Here are the top products that your crown of glory should never be without, especially when summer is in full tilt. Did Fuzzy Wuzzy Have Curly and Frizzy Hair? Not With These Prodtucts! “Curly hair needs more moisture than any other kind of hair,” says Bernard Arapoglou of Frédéric Fekkai Palm Beach. “This is also the same with permed hair. With permed hair, you need more protection.” Any hair that has been chemically treated or processed needs extra care because it tends to be drier and more brittle than natural hair. A great line for curly hair is the new Herbal Essences

Hydralicious® line which infuses hair with luxurious hydration. “Straight or normal hair has a different texture and diameter than curly hair,” says Charles Anthony Ruffini of Phyto Universe in New York City. “Curly and relaxed hair have much more sensitive elasticity level,” Ruffini adds. The Hydralicious line has swirls of moisturizers and are infused with botanical and fruit extracts to hydrate hair and help strengthen the keratin bonds. Use the shampoo and conditioner daily for curly hair, but make sure you add an anti UV spray like L’Oreal Everpure’s UV Protect Spray® or Smooth Deep Control Masque® with its unique anti-fade system. The Everpure® line is sulfate free too, so you can look your best while going “green” on your hair. If you give high marks for style, an excellent product to carry in your pocketbook is TRESSemme’s Smooth Anti-Frizz Secret Smoothening Cream® that not only

Garnier’s new Leave-In Conditioner is a great tool for those with frizzy hair who tend to be beach buffs. The conditioner tames frizz with the alacrity of speed dial. Plus it acts as a solar shield: a great double whammy. Don’t forget to hydrate from within too. Drinks like Vitamin Water® not only replenish your body’s moisture but also give you your daily dose of nutrients. A Cure For Limp, Fine Hair? You Bet. If your hair is as fine as spun sugar, you want volume. But add too much extra stuff in it, such as mousse and styling gel, and your results will only be temporary.
3
For a good volumizer, try Got2B’s new fat-tastic Thickening Plumping Mousse®, a delicious foam that plumps your hair with collagen. Spread this evenly throughout damp hair and finish off with Got2B’s fattastic Thickening Non-aerosol Hairspray® which should be sprayed from the roots to the ends of damp hair and styled to achieve fuller hair. Color Me “Fade”? Not a Chance. What don’t we love about color? The jewel tones of a striking redhead, the shining heap of ebony hair, the straw-gold shades of a gorgeous blonde can make women look like screen sirens. And with over half of American women coloring their hair in various shades and nuances of the rainbow, it is important to care for
hair before the sun devours the tint. Wear a scarf or hat wherever you can. Sun can bleach and dry your hair, thereby destroying a pricey color job in minutes. And of course, once the damage is done, you’ll have to book an appointment at the salon again and repigment your hair. “A hair mask can give hydration, but you have to put more pigment in color treated hair to give it more shine,” says Bernard Arapoglou of Frédéric Fekkai Palm Beach. So how to you stop hair from fading? With prevention –which is better than the proverbial cure--of course. Many women love L’Oreal, and with good reason. The products have their proprietary AntiFade Complex
and are specifically formulated for color-treated hair. I recommend L’Oreal’s new EverPure line and the terrific Nexxus Dualiste Shampoo and Conditioner to protect your fine color-treated hair. Also, Dove’s Advanced Color Care Therapy line deeply moisturizes and preserves pigments. Another product to love for color-treated hair is L’Oreal’s Vive Pro line with UV filters and anti-oxidants. These lock the color in and help keep the elements at bay. If you’re a “natural” gal and want to embrace organic hair products, we love Pantene’s Pro-V Nature Fusion line that is full of wholesome ingredients like cassia essence. If your worry is scalp care, try Head & Shoulders’ dry scalp care and dandruff conditioner, which is a terrific

way to nip the problem in the bud. And we love the new line of Vitamin Shampoos and Conditioners that infuse each strand with so many essential nutrients. For ethnic hair, we love Motions’ Marula Shampoo & Conditioners from Sally Beauty because they tame hair and infuse it with moisture. Bracelets and Bands A crop of excellent UV monitoring devices like the Sunmate and the UV Sun Sense Bracelet can actually tell you how much sun exposure you’re getting. The Sunmate is a small device that monitors the intensity of the UV rays when you’re outside. LED indicators light up between 1 and 5 depending on the intensity of UV light, so you can figure out how much sun protection you’re going to need. (www.purelyproducts.com) With the UV Sun Sense Bracelet, slather on sunscreen and also apply some on the 3
bracelet. The UV Index is a scale given to the level of UV radiation on any given day (the range is from 0-20). The higher the index, the higher the potential for skin damage. As the band is exposed to light, it turns purple (like Barney, but with a purpose!) to indicate that it’s been activated. When the band is no longer purple, it’s time to reapply sunscreen. When the words “APPLY SUNSCREEN TO THIS SIDE” disappear, it’s time to scoot out of the sun as quickly as the Mad Hatter. If it Ain’t Broke, You’re Lucky: Repairing the Damage Some excellent new products with SPF include Coppertone’s NutraShield Dual Defense, which contains nourishing antioxidants that actually help your skin repair while you’re out in the sun (it also protects against UVA and UVB rays). Coppertone’s Sport Sprays are great for kids and are invisible on your skin. We say beach SPF

And don’t forget to take care of your lips! Products like Softlips that contain SPF are perfect for your beach bag. The new Softlips have shimmer in them and make terrific glosses too. The Final Straw Hair is like good weather: the absence of it can make you cringe. Sure, Britney Spears may be daring enough to shave her locks off and live life on the wild side, but why would you follow suit unless you wanted to end up in rehab? op skin creams average about $400 per ounce (and you thought gas was expensive!), yet most offer little proof that they do half of what they promise. Want to save a bundle and improve your skin? Load your shopping cart with nutrients that have been shown to possess skinhydrating, sun-protecting, and even wrinkle-preventing powers, says Manhattan dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD. Here’s her grocery list of the best foods for your skin: Firm and Bright You’re probably up to your eyebrows (Botoxed or not) with the mantra “eat more fruits and vegetables.” But if you’ve yet to take that advice to heart, maybe knowing that they prevent wrinkles will do the trick. 48
The skin doc’s three top picks: sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and cantaloupe. What they do: Replenish your skin’s supply of antioxidants, so they're ready to scarf up free radicals whenever they make an appearance. Free rads are highly reactive oxygen molecules that damage cells and contribute to just about everything that can go wrong with skin, from dryness to wrinkles. Fresh and Juicy Your body can’t store much wrinkle-fighting vitamin C, so you need to top up your supplies regularly. The easiest way: Have some citrus every day. The skin doc’s four top picks: oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit.

While all true teas contain EGCG (by the way, that stands for epigallocatechin-3-gallate), the various types of green tea have the most.
Ounce for ounce, oranges are the top citrus source of C, but you can only eat so many, right? For variety, make lemonade; squeeze limes on melon; add grapefruit to salad; and, instead of drinking soda, fizz OJ with sparkling water. It all adds up. Keep skin’s vitamin C levels high. While C is a nifty antioxidant, that’s not the key reason it’s here. It helps keep collagen – the supportive protein fibers that stop skin from sagging – strong and resilient. (Flimsy collagen means lines and wrinkles.) Since collagen breakdown really picks up in your mid-30s, eat citrus early and often to head off aging. Smoothing and Soothing There’s a particularly potent antioxidant known as EGCG that does all kinds of good things for skin. The best place
to find it? True teas: black, green, or white (not herbal). Brew a full teapot every morning so that sipping 4 to 6 cups throughout the day is a no-brainer. The skin doc’s #1 pick? green tea! While all true teas contain EGCG (by the way, that stands for epigallocatechin-3-gallate), the various types of green tea have the most. Dr. Wechsler’s personal favorite is hojicha green tea (available at http://www.adagio.com/). “The roasting process that turns this green tea a brownish color also lowers its caffeine content,” she says – handy if you’re caffeine sensitive or it’s one of those days when you don’t need another stimulant. What it does: Gives your skin a healthy dose of EGCG, which is a great multitasker. EGCG puts a damper on inflammatory chemicals involved in acne and sun-related 49

Several cold-water catches give your skin a double benefit: age-fighting omega-3 fatty acids and the restorative powers of protein. These are salmon, trout, tuna, sardines, Atlantic mackerel, Pacific herring, and most shellfish. Just don’t, uh, go overboard. As good as omega-3s are for skin (and the rest of you, too), worries about the amount of mercury in many fish mean it’s smart to limit seafood or freshwater fish to two meals a week. That’s a must for young children and for women who are pregnant, who may become pregnant, or who are nursing. (Government’s fish guidelines here: www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/admehg3.html) What they do: Omega-3s fight inflammation, now considered one of the top skin agers, and they also help protect against sunburn, enhancing the effects of your sunscreen’s SPF. Protein is required to build and repair skin cells and to make enzymes and hormones that help keep it glowing. Fill your grocery cart with all of these foods and you won’t just look younger, you’ll be younger. Eating at least one serving of fish a week and getting the right amount of antioxidants through diet or supplements lowers your biological age. In fact, the antioxidants alone can make your RealAge up to 6 years younger.

Make Your Own Potpourri There’s nothing better than bring in the fresh, unadulterated scent of the outdoors into your home. For most people, potpourri is something that is store-bought, and displayed in a clear glass jar. But the really amazing scents come from creating a handcrafted version of these. Potpourri is not only beautiful to look at, but is exceedingly simple to make. All you need are dried flowers, some essential oils and a zesty sense of smell. What You’ll Need • 2 tablespoons orris root bits or powder (the fixative) • 5 drops Rose Geranium essential oil • 2 drops Sweet Orange essential oil • 1 tablespoon whole allspice • 1 tablespoon whole cloves • 2 whole nutmegs Jann Johnson, our crafts expert extraordinaire is a member of the Craft & Hobby Association and loves arts and crafts. Her projects have graced the covers and spreads of several major magazines worldwide. Her web site is www.jannjohnson.com.
• 3 cups dried rose buds and petals • 1 cup dried jasmine flowers (whole) • 1/4 cup dried lavender
• 1/4 cup bay leaves, torn • 1/2 cup (1” or broken) cinnamon sticks • ½ cup dried orange peel strips, preferably home made (use a large orange; let dry at least 48 hours) • A clear glass jar for mixing the ingredients, at least 2 quarts • Our basket is a white-washed 8” Nantucket from Basketville.com, # 92-2243
Most materials were ordered from www.glenbrookfarm.com. Make sure the dried flowers, petals and leaves are as aromatic as possible. While essential oils will infuse the real smell in the potpourri, you want fresh, quality ingredients for the best effect. Method TIP: Work on a covered surface as essential oils can damage furniture finishes. 1. In a large, clean, dry jar (at least 2 quarts) combine the orris root chunks, Rose Geranium essential oil and Sweet Orange essential oil drops. Cap jar and shake to coat orris root. Turn the glass jar gently to make sure all the ingredients are infused with the oil. 2. Place allspice, cloves, nutmegs, and a couple of cinnamon sticks in a plastic zip-lock bag and seal. With a hammer, pound spices just hard enough to break up into bits, but not a powder. You don’t want a really powdery texture in potpourri because these will sink to the bottom. Add to orris root mixture then cover jar.
Once again, shake the jar thoroughly, and gently do a turning motion until all the ingredients are coated with the spices and orris root mix. You can turn this “exercise” into a real exercise in relaxation by taking the time to inhale as you go along. 3. Peel the orange using a vegetable peeler. Make sure the strips are about 3 inches long and half an inch wide. These orange strips should be air dried on a rack for a day or two until they attain that “signature potpourri curl.” 4. Add roses, jasmine, lavender, bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, and orange peel to mixture; cover jar and rotate jar to blend. Allow to age for a week or two, rotating jar occasionally. Makes about 4 ½ cups. Spoon into sachets or pretty containers. 55
Make your Own Potpourri
Potpourri Potpourri is a beautiful, fragrant mix of dry botanical materials, scented oils, and a fixative to keep the fragrance from fading quickly. It will last for years – just add more scented oil as needed. Creating your own potpourri adds a warm personal touch to your home and makes lovely gifts.

home The Garage Sale: How to Hold One; How to Shop One By Megan Sarah Johnson
Gone are the days when tag sales conjure thoughts of aggressive bargain bin hunters haggling over mismatched dish towels. Nowadays, everyone from suburban families to urban apartment dwellers host garage sales with the hopes of getting rid of major clutter and making some extra cash. An extra tool for extracting unwanted messes out of your life, selling your used goods is also a sustainable method of throwing things away. After all, we all know the saying about one man’s trash being another’s treasure. But to maximize the results of your selling experience, there are a variety of easy steps to follow to ensure profits. Follow these plans and prepare for treating your driveway as a selling floor! Organization is Key. In order to determi ne what you actually have in your possession, a massive cleaning is definitely required. But don’t get overwhelmed; just take it room by room. Basements are often filled with items you probably forgot you had. Chances are your bedroom closet is chock-full of items you don’t even care about, and therefore won’t even miss. By separating items into “store or sell” piles, you’ll 58
determine which items you want to remain in your home, and which could be top sellers on sale day. There’s Power in Numbers. Chances are if you’re thinking you have extra stuff lying around the house, your neighbor has the the same idea. If you live in a neighborhood, create a colorful and lively informational flyer with your contact information on it. Explain your mission for a group garage sale day, and offer a few different weekend dates so everyone can find a time that works for them. Have a small piece of the paper serve as the registration form, and take a walk around the block sticking flyers in mailboxes. If you live in an apartment building, place flyers under each apartment door. The families that are interested should fill out their names and addresses. Go with the date that has the most responses. The more people who participate in the selling, the more individuals will show up for buying. Advertise and Publicize! Charge a small registration fee of $10 or $20 from each household. However, do not be a doormat. Make sure people pay their entrance fees on time. Finally, the sum of the fees can go towards advertising in your local classified newspapers or internet sites. The Garage Sale Craigslist and other community websites are an extremely useful marketing tool to attract buyers. Also, email blasts to people inside and out of your community can attract buyers. Safety is Vital! Get your local police involved to direct traffic if you know there’s going to be a lot of cars entering the neighborhood. By monitoring the neighborhood’s entrance, police can allow cars to enter, but only at a speed that is conducive to an area where adults and children are going to be walking around in high volumes. You want your day to be profitable, but you also want it to be safe. The Early Bird Gets the Worm. Or rather, the Shoebox full of Money. By rising early on sale day, you can move your items outside early. Expect that people will show up early. Really early, as in before the actual start time. When it comes to a bargain, some people are ultra-motivated to be the first on the scene. If you serve them, they will come. It’s a well-known fact that nobody wants to feel uncomfortable under the eyes of snooty salespeople. Friendliness makes a major difference. Greet each shopper with a smile and a hello, and offers cups of lemonade or iced tea. Chances are if you start up a conversation, buyers will be more much likely to drop a few bucks on your items.
60
They don’t call it bargaining for no reason. Your driveway may not be a street market in Marrakech, but the fact is you will have hagglers. People will try to take you as low as possible, so if there’s a big-ticket item make sure all members of the family agree on the lowest selling price. Nobody’s interested in turning around for one second and seeing that their husband sold the air conditioner for a dollar. After you’ve sold, get ready to shop. Hitting up a garage sale can be incredibly fun, but can also be a quick cash vacuum if you like to spend. Here are our tips for when you’re the buyer: 1. Plot Your Attack. No matter whether you discover the sales via the newspaper or Craigslist, you have to have a coordinated plan of direction. To avoid wasting gas driving all over the place, map out the homes you plan to stop at according to their distance from where you live. Nobody wants to spend the entire day in the car. 2. Be Comfortable! Sneakers are essential if you have to hoof it around a neighborhood, or up and down apartment stairs. Wear light clothing that you can easily shed after lifting a television down four flights of stairs. 3. Put away the plastic. It’s pretty safe to say your neighbors don’t take AmEx. Strictly carry small bills and change to make financial exchanges easier on everyone. However, if you’re carrying a lot of cash,
that doesn’t mean you have to spend every cent in your pocket. Nobody needs to waste money on a set of ceramic clowns. The idea here is to save money by finding bargains, not useless items. 4. Park and Walk. The best parking spots are at the end of the street, closest to the neighborhood’s exit. That way, when you want to leave, you can quickly zoom out of the neighborhood without worrying about pedestrians crossing your path. 5. Hunt and Gather. If you know you’re combing the sales for a baby stroller, don’t get deterred by expensive items you don’t need. Shop with specific items in mind. Also, if you know you’re to be walking and carrying large items, bring a wagon to tote your purchases. With these tips it mind, you’re absolutely ready to host your own garage sale, or set out on the quest to shop one. Happy Bargaining!
Be Charitable. Yes, we recognize the point of a garage sale is to make money, but chances are there will be left over items that didn’t get chosen by lookers. Or, maybe you didn’t feel like lugging that old giant couch up from the basement. Luckily, the internet has revolutionized making charitable donations so your unsold items can be snapped up in no time. Organizations such as www.freecycle.org make it easy to get rid of household items you no longer want. Instead of sitting in giant trash bags in landfills, Freecycle recycles. A volunteer in your area mediates the transaction, making sure your old sofa finds a new home. The Salvation Army is another nation-wide organization, but instead of going from person to person, your items are sold at their store locations to benefit those families in need. Best of all? There’s no membership fee, and large items can often be picked up at your home free of charge! It’s quite refreshing to hear that making a donation doesn’t always need to take a toll on your wallet.

It’s for the Birds How to Attract Birds to Your Garden
It’s a wonderful thing to be able to house a wildlife sanctuary in your very own backyard. We’re not talking about inviting pests and rodents, but rather the birds, the bees and the butterflies…so to speak. If you see birds inhabiting a backyard, chances are that this is no accident. The trick is to make them feel invited and let them stay for as long as they would like. If you see birds and butterflies flit by your backyard but seldom see them reside there, you probably don’t have enough of a varied supply of food for them. There needs to be a reason for them to keep revisiting, and small birds eat almost constantly during daylight hours in the winter. The usual suspects who are likely to wander where there is food includes: songbirds, butterflies, hummingbirds and migratory birds. The art is not that difficult: you need to provide them with food, shelter and water. Imagine a backyard from a bird’s point of view: if the 62
landscape is a barren desert, there is no place to nest or rest: no food and no water. Birds like “cover” and being relatively invisible. Hence, you need to plant flowering shrubs or trees and house a diverse supply of seeds, nuts, berries and water. Choose plants that flower during different seasons so there’s always something in bloom at any given time. Create a Landscape Fortunately, any landscape can become a haven for winged wildlife, and for the people who share it. To create a landscape that provides birds with a guaranteed, year-round food supply, you need to plant an assortment of plant species that provides seeds, berries, nuts, or other food throughout the year. Planting a diverse selection helps ensure that a variety of food sources is always available. Choose different plantings that produce food throughout each of the four seasons. Select a few books at the library that show similar plant layouts.

If you have clean, moving water in your backyard, chances are that you will attract almost 3 times more birds into it.
Deciduous plantings, plants whose leaves drop off in winter, generally bear the most fruit, nuts, and seeds for wildlife. In addition, they offer shady, leafy nesting sites in the spring and summer. Even a flower garden can provide a place for birds to eat and hide.
lot of grass –which most backyards and lawns tend to do – then you’ll end up attracting the less desirable “generalist” species, such as feral pigeons, starlings, cowbirds, and grackles. These actively compete with the more desirable bird species like the songbirds and cuckoos.
You can also plant Evergreens, which are particularly notable because they bear leaves throughout the year, not to mention berries and seed-filled cones. Evergreens offer leafy shelter to birds all year around1.
You will want to determine when your plants are providing food for birds, for example, nuts and acorns in winter, flowers and seeds in the summer. You may want to remove some plants that do not provide food in order to make room for ones that do.
Mapping the Landscape First, start with what you have. See what plants are thriving and what areas need more foliage. Then browse a garden book to see what plants will complement your current arrangement, making sure that they grow in your type of soil and flourish in your city’s weather conditions. Plan to supplement with native fruiting trees, shrubs, and vines. Reduce the area occupied by the lawn. If you have a
The List Make separate lists for each season. Begin with what your yard provides, and add to it plants you can grow that will provide more food that season. Concentrate on first adding plants that provide food during seasons when nothing much is available in your yard. Trying to transform your yard into a haven for birds and 63

butterflies overnight is an easy way to become frustrated, so plan on making gradual changes over the course of several planting seasons. Use your notes as a guide. Identify one or two areas to concentrate on for the first year. For example, if you have a single tree in your front yard, consider adding more trees and underplanting with berryproducing shrubs and ground covers.
use honey! Honey can develop a fungus that could be fatal to hummingbirds.
Keep a Budget
1. Songbirds prefer larger trees that serve as a shelter for them from predators, winter shelter and summer nesting sites.
Plan to add plants gradually as your budget and time allow. Buy only as many plants as you can care for at one time. Newly added plants take more water and care than older, established ones. Proper soil preparation, watering, and mulching are all essential to getting new plants off to a good start.
Plants that are Good for Birds Plants That Attract and Feed Hummingbirds 1. Willows and Eucalyptus trees are great places for hummingbirds to nest. Make sure you also have mulch, leaves and moss so they can build their nests. Hummingbirds tend to be quite hungry: they feed 3-5 times per hour, so make sure the flowers have a lot of nectar. 2. A good feeder should be brightly colored so as to attract birds from a distance, and filled with sugar water (1 part sugar and 4 parts water). Make sure you never 64
3. Flowers that hummingbirds love include Bee balm; Butterfly weed; Columbine; Dahlia; Foxglove; Hollyhock; Hibiscus; Sage and Verbena.
Plants That Attract and Feed Songbirds
2. These plants and trees include Flowering Dogwood; Red Mulberry; Red Cedar; Douglas Fir; Oak and Black Walnut. 3. Some seeds that songbirds love include: sunflower seeds; peanut kernels; black oil sunflower; orange halves; sliced raw apple; raisins; suet; corn bread; peanut butter and cracked corn. Remember, although many people will gravitate towards choosing a color palette for their garden, it really helps to think of which shrubs, annuals and perennials can attract birds. Once your birds have become accustomed to eating in your yard, they will develop a bond between your garden and you. Remember to increase the food supply during the winter months and you’ll be certain to win the love of your lovely feathered friends. 1 References: HowtoAttractBirds.com; & www.thegardenhelper.com

Keep a wide stance with your toes slightly turned out. Place weights in hands and let them hang straight down. Squat down, and keep your knees in line with your toes, then stand and raise elbows up to the ears. Make sure that you pull from the shoulders! Then return weights straight down back to squat position.

The weights should be hanging down with arms in front of your thighs. Then bend at the waist until your back is parallel to the floor. Pull the shoulders back together and bend the elbows up. Then extend arms straight down and extend through hips to stand fully up. 2-3 sets 12-15 repetitions 30 seconds between sets. During the 30 seconds, you can do crunches if you want.

Jen’s 12-week nutrition/menu plan for the workout Just remember it takes 21 days to make or break a habit, so stay focused on the proper diet plan to reach your goals (to make that wedding dress look amazing!). I also recommend you consult with your physician or dietician since everyone’s body is different. Here’s a general meal plan you can follow that will give you the confidence to wear that dress: Breakfast - Whole Grain Cereal with Protein. I like 1/2 cup of oats with 2 egg whites, but you can mix it up with something you may prefer more as long as you remain within the proper food group. Snack – Fruit, like 1/2 grapefruit or a banana. Lunch - 1 cup veggies with 4 ounces protein – For lunch, I like to eat spinach salad with 4 ounces of grilled chicken, but you can substitute the chicken for another protein like tofu. Snack - Protein to tide over until dinner like a small fat-free yogurt with a medium apple. Dinner - Complete Meal 5-6 ounces protein; 1 cup veggies; 4 ounce potato or sweet potato. To treat yourself, try eating salmon with a cup of broccoli and 4 ounces of sweet potato. Snack (if still hungry) or need sweet craving - 100 calorie Jell-O® pudding... etc. This should keep you full throughout the day. There is no hard and fast plan to timing of workouts around meals, but food and sleep is important for proper recovery.
71
Single Leg Squat This is not a very easy exercise to do, but remember, practice makes perfect. It’s really all about the balance.
Bridal Boot Camp
Place one leg behind you on a sturdy bench or chair. Keep your shoulders square and towards the front of your body. Raise your head and chest then squat down as far as possible. Keep all your weight on the front heel. Then stand back to start position and repeat.

Fitness Protocol As we’ve mentioned before, cardio is an integral component to your bridal boot camp workout. “To really commit, you need at least 12 weeks,” says Cassetty. “You can easily drop a dress size or two.” Each exercise should be done with 2-3 sets using 12-15 repetitions each. Rest for about 30 seconds between each set. During the 30 second wait, you can do crunches if you want. The cardio workout needs to be at least 3 days a week for at least 30 minutes a day. It doesn’t matter what kind of exercise you do as long as you get your heart rate up. “My favorite ‘diet’ or ‘lifestyle choice’ is Weight 74
Watchers®,” says Cassetty. Whenever possible, avoid processed foods and eat natural foods that are so much better for you. Jen recommends that 30-45 minutes before any workout, eat a small, nutritious meal, like a Luna Bar® or Slimfast Shake®, “Small meals will curve appetites and make sure you don’t pass out during your workout.” “Above all relax, and enjoy the process. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.” Well, we hope Jen’s routines gets you into that dress in time with a little room to spare. Follow Jen’s blog at: www.jennifercassetty.com/Main/Blog

What is Anorexia Nervosa? W
hat is anorexia nervosa? A person with anorexia (a-neh-RECK-see-ah) nervosa, often called anorexia, has an intense fear of gaining weight. Someone with anorexia thinks about food a lot and limits the food she or he eats, even though she or he is too thin. Anorexia is more than just a problem with food. It’s a way of using food or starving oneself to feel more in control of life and to ease tension, anger, and anxiety. Most people with anorexia are female. An anorexic: • has a low body weight for her or his height • resists keeping a normal body weight • has an intense fear of gaining weight • thinks she or he is fat even when very thin • misses three (menstrual) periods in a row for girls/ women who have started having their periods Who becomes anorexic? While anorexia mostly affects girls and women (90-95 percent), it can also affect boys and men. It was once thought that women of color were shielded from eating disorders by their cultures, which tend to be more accepting of different body sizes. Sadly, research shows that as African American, Latina, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian and Alaska Native women are more exposed to images of thin women, the risk increases for developing eating disorders. 76
What causes anorexia? There is no single known cause of anorexia. But some things may play a part: • Culture. Women in the U.S. are under constant pressure to fit a certain ideal of beauty. Seeing images of flawless, thin females everywhere makes it hard for women to feel good about their bodies. More and more, men are also feeling pressure to have a perfect body. • Families. If you have a mother or sister with anorexia, you are more likely to develop the disorder. Parents who think looks are important, diet themselves, or criticize their children’s bodies are more likely to have a child with anorexia. • Life changes or stressful events. Traumatic events like rape as well as stressful things like starting a new job, can lead to the onset of anorexia. • Personality traits. Someone with anorexia may not like her or himself, hate the way she or he looks, or feel hopeless. She or he often sets hard-to-reach goals for her or himself and tries to be perfect in every way. • Biology. Genes, hormones, and chemicals in the brain may be factors in developing anorexia.
image/ istockphoto.com What are signs of anorexia? Someone with anorexia may look very thin. She or he may use extreme measures to lose weight by: • making her or himself throw up • taking pills to urinate or have a bowel movement • taking diet pills • not eating or eating very little • exercising a lot, even in bad weather or when hurt or tired • weighing food and counting calories • moving food around the plate instead of eating it Someone with anorexia may also have a distorted body image, shown by thinking she or he is fat, wearing baggy clothes, weighing her or himself many times a day, and fearing weight gain. Anorexia can also cause someone to not act like her or himself. She or he may talk about weight and food all the time, not eat in front of others, be moody or sad, or not want to go out with friends. What happens to your body with anorexia? With anorexia, your body doesn’t get the energy from foods that it needs, so it slows down. Look at the picture (fig. 1) to find out how anorexia affects your health.

Real Life Experience
It was 6 months ago when I realized my daughter, Jen, had an eating disorder. Jen has always been a picky eater. But I started to see that she moved food around her plate. And she never ate very much. She exercised all the time—even when she was sick. And she was sick a lot. She became very skinny and pale. Her hair was thinning. Jen was moody and seemed sad—I thought that’s what teens act like. But once I put the signs together, I talked to Jen about anorexia. She denied she had a problem, but I knew she needed help. I took her to our doctor, and she asked me to put Jen in the hospital. It’s been a tough road since then for all of us, but Jen is back home now. She is still seeing her doctors and may need help for some time. But she’s doing much better. 77

Can someone with anorexia get better? Yes. Someone with anorexia can get better. A health care team of doctors, nutritionists, and therapists will help the patient get better. They will help her or him learn healthy eating patterns, cope with thoughts and feelings, and gain weight. With outpatient care, the patient receives treatment through visits with members of their health care team. Some patients may need “partial hospitalization.” This means that the person goes to the hospital during the day for treatment, but lives at home. Sometimes, the patient goes to a hospital and stays there for treatment. After leaving the hospital, the patient continues to get help from her or his health care team. Individual counseling can also help someone with anorexia. If the patient is young, counseling may involve the whole family too. Support groups may also be a part of treatment. In support groups, patients and families meet and share what they’ve been through. Often, eating disorders happen along with mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. These problems are treated along with the anorexia. Treatment may include medicines that fix hormone imbalances that play a role in these disorders. Can women who had anorexia in the past still get pregnant? It depends. When a woman has active anorexia, meaning she currently has anorexia, she does not get her period and usually does not ovulate. This makes it hard to get pregnant. Women who have recovered from anorexia and are at a healthy weight have a better chance of getting pregnant. If you’re having a hard time getting pregnant, see your doctor. Can anorexia hurt a baby if the mother is pregnant? Yes. Women who have anorexia while they are pregnant are more likely to lose the baby. If a woman with anorexia doesn’t lose the baby, she is more likely to have the baby early, deliver by C-section, and have depression after the baby is born. What should I do if I think someone I know has anorexia? If someone you know is showing signs of anorexia, you may be able to help. 1. Set a time to talk. Set aside a time to talk privately with your friend. Make sure you talk in a quiet place where you won’t be distracted. 78
2. Tell your friend about your concerns. Be honest. Tell your friend about your worries about her or his not eating or over exercising. Tell your friend you are concerned and that you think these things may be a sign of a problem that needs professional help. 3. Ask your friend to talk to a professional. Your friend can talk to a counselor or doctor who knows about eating issues. Offer to help your friend find a counselor or doctor and make an appointment, and offer to go with her or him to the appointment. 4. Avoid conflicts. If your friend won’t admit that she or he has a problem, don’t push. Be sure to tell your friend you are always there to listen if she or he wants to talk. 5. Don’t place shame, blame, or guilt on your friend. Don’t say, “You just need to eat.” Instead, say things like, “I’m concerned about you because you won’t eat breakfast or lunch.” Or, “It makes me afraid to hear you throwing up.” 6. Don’t give simple solutions. Don’t say, “If you’d just stop, then things would be fine!” 7. Let your friend know that you will always be there no matter what.

• Anorexia nervosa is more expensive to treat than schizophrenia, yet insurance coverage for treatment is exceedingly insufficient. The average direct medical costs for treating anorexia nervosa is $6054 a year compared to $4824 a year for Schizophrenia. • Research dollars spent on eating disorders averaged $1.20 per affected individual, compared to $159 per affected individual for schizophrenia. • The average direct medical costs for treating eating disorder patients in the United States is currently between $5-6 Billion per year, whereas the global cost of anti-psychotic medication is $7 Billion per year. • Anorexia nervosa has the highest premature mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. The majority of deaths are due to physiological complications. • Although recovery from anorexia nervosa is often protracted nearly a decade, the outcome of treatment is better than for obesity or breast cancer.

Women and Depression 80
Q&A
PART TWO
In a Three Part Series on Women and Depression
from
National Institute of Mental Health Transforming the understanding and treatment of mental illness through research
What causes depression in women? Scientists are examining many potential causes for and contributing factors to women’s increased risk for depression. It is likely that genetic, biological, chemical, hormonal, environmental, psychological, and social factors all intersect to contribute to depression. Genetics If a woman has a family history of depression, she may be more at risk of developing the illness. However, this is not a hard and fast rule. Depression can occur in women without family histories of depression, and women from families with a history of depression may not develop depression themselves. Genetics research indicates that the risk for developing depression likely involves the combination of multiple genes with environmental or other factors.3 Chemicals and hormones Brain chemistry appears to be a significant factor in depressive disorders. Modern brain-imaging technologies, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have shown that the brains of people suffering from depression look different than those of people without depression. The parts of the brain responsible for regulating mood, thinking, sleep, appetite and behavior don’t appear to be functioning normally. In addition, important neurotransmitterschemicals that brain cells use to communicate-appear to be out of balance. But these images do not reveal WHY the depression has occurred. Scientists are also studying the influence of female hormones, which change throughout life. Researchers have shown that hormones directly affect the brain chemistry that controls emotions and mood. Specific times during a woman’s life are of particular interest, including puberty; the times before menstrual periods; before, during, and just after pregnancy (postpartum); and just prior to and during menopause (perimenopause). Premenstrual dysphoric disorder Some women may be susceptible to a severe form of premenstrual syndrome called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Women affected by PMDD typically experience depression, anxiety, irritability and mood swings the week before menstruation, in such a way that interferes with their normal functioning. Women with debilitating PMDD do not necessarily have unusual hormone 81

Some studies suggest that women who experience postpartum depression often have had prior depressive episodes.
changes, but they do have different responses to these changes.4 They may also have a history of other mood disorders and differences in brain chemistry that cause them to be more sensitive to menstruation-related hormone changes. Scientists are exploring how the cyclical rise and fall of estrogen and other hormones may affect the brain chemistry that is associated with depressive illness.5,6,7 Postpartum depression Women are particularly vulnerable to depression after giving birth, when hormonal and physical changes and the new responsibility of caring for a newborn can be overwhelming. Many new mothers experience a brief episode of mild mood changes known as the “baby blues,” but some will suffer from postpartum depression, a much more serious condition that requires active treatment and emotional support for the new mother. One study found that postpartum women are at an increased risk for several mental disorders, including depression, for several months after childbirth.8 Some studies suggest that women who experience postpartum depression often have had prior depressive episodes. Some experience it during their pregnancies, but it often goes undetected. Research suggests that visits to the doctor may be good opportunities for screening for depression both during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.9,10 Menopause Hormonal changes increase during the transition between 82
premenopause to menopause. While some women may transition into menopause without any problems with mood, others experience an increased risk for depression. This seems to occur even among women without a history of depression.11,12 However, depression becomes less common for women during the post-menopause period.13 Stress Stressful life events such as trauma, loss of a loved one, a difficult relationship or any stressful situation-whether welcome or unwelcome-often occur before a depressive episode. Additional work and home responsibilities, caring for children and aging parents, abuse, and poverty also may trigger a depressive episode. Evidence suggests that women respond differently than men to these events, making them more prone to depression. In fact, research indicates that women respond in such a way that prolongs their feelings of stress more so than men, increasing the risk for depression.14 However, it is unclear why some women faced with enormous challenges develop depression, and some with similar challenges do not.
What are the different forms of depression? There are several forms of depressive disorders that occur in both women and men. The most common are major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder. Minor depression is also common. Major depressive disorder, also called major depression, is characterized by a combination of symptoms that

interfere with a person’s ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy once-pleasurable activities. Major depression is disabling and prevents a person from functioning normally. An episode of major depression may occur only once in a person’s lifetime, but more often, it recurs throughout a person’s life. Dysthymic disorder, also called dysthymia, is characterized by depressive symptoms that are long-term (e.g., two years or longer) but less severe than those of major depression. Dysthymia may not disable a person, but it prevents one from functioning normally or feeling well. People with dysthymia may also experience one or more episodes of major depression during their lifetimes. Minor depression may also occur. Symptoms of minor depression are similar to major depression and dysthymia, but they are less severe and/or are usually shorter term. Some forms of depressive disorder have slightly different characteristics than those described above, or they may develop under unique circumstances. However, not all scientists agree on how to characterize and define these forms of depression. They include the following: • Psychotic depression occurs when a severe depressive illness is accompanied by some form of psychosis, such as a break with reality; seeing, hearing, smelling or feeling things that others can’t detect (hallucinations); and having strong beliefs that are false, such as believing you are the president (delusions). • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is characterized
by a depressive illness during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight. The depression generally lifts during spring and summer. SAD may be effectively treated with light therapy, but nearly half of those with SAD do not respond to light therapy alone. Antidepressant medication and psychotherapy also can reduce SAD symptoms, either alone or in combination with light therapy.2 Bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness, is not as common as major depression or dysthymia. Bipolar disorder is characterized by cycling mood changes – from extreme highs (e.g., mania) to extreme lows (e.g., depression).
How does depression affect adolescent girls? Before adolescence, girls and boys experience depression at about the same frequency.13 By adolescence, however, girls become more likely to experience depression than boys. Research points to several possible reasons for this imbalance. The biological and hormonal changes that occur during puberty likely contribute to the sharp increase in rates of depression among adolescent girls. In addition, research has suggested that girls are more likely than boys to continue feeling bad after experiencing difficult situations or events, suggesting they are more prone to depression.21 Another study found that girls tended to doubt themselves, doubt their problem-solving abilities and view their problems as unsolvable more so than boys.
The girls with these views were more likely to have depressive symptoms as well. Girls also tended to need a higher degree of approval and success to feel secure than boys.22 Finally, girls may undergo more hardships, such as poverty, poor education, childhood sexual abuse, and other traumas than boys. One study found that more than 70 percent of depressed girls experienced a difficult or stressful life event prior to a depressive episode, as
be at risk for a coexisting cardiovascular illness, such as heart disease or a stroke.24
How can I help a friend or relative who is depressed? If you know someone who has depression, the first and most important thing you can do is to help her get an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. You may need to make an appointment on her behalf and go with her to see the doctor. Encourage her to stay in treatment, or to seek different treatment if no improvement occurs after six to eight weeks. In addition, you can also: • Offer emotional support, understanding, patience and encouragement. • Engage her in conversation, and listen carefully. • Never disparage feelings she expresses, but point out realities and offer hope. • Never ignore comments about suicide, and report them to your friend’s or relative’s therapist or doctor. • Invite your friend or relative out for walks, outings and other activities. Keep trying if she declines, but don’t push her to take on too much too soon. Although diversions and company are needed, too many demands may increase feelings of failure.
compared with only 14 percent of
boys.23
How does depression affect older women? As with other age groups, more older women than older men experience depression, but rates decrease among women after menopause.13 Evidence suggests that depression in post-menopausal women generally occurs in women with prior histories of depression. In any case, depression is NOT a normal part of aging. The death of a spouse or loved one, moving from work into retirement, or dealing with a chronic illness can leave women and men alike feeling sad or distressed. After a period of adjustment, many older women can regain their emotional balance, but others do not and may develop depression. When older women do suffer from depression, it may be overlooked because older adults may be less willing to discuss feelings of sadness or grief, or they may have less obvious symptoms of depression. As a result, their doctors may be less likely to suspect or spot it. For older adults who experience depression for the first time later in life, other factors, such as changes in the brain or body, may be at play. For example, older adults may suffer from restricted blood flow, a condition called ischemia. Over time, blood vessels become less flexible. They may harden and prevent blood from flowing normally to the body’s organs, including the brain. If this occurs, an older adult with no family or personal history of depression may develop what some doctors call “vascular depression.” Those with vascular depression also may
• Remind her that with time and treatment, the depression will lift.
How can I help myself if I am depressed? You may feel exhausted, helpless and hopeless. It may be extremely difficult to take any action to help yourself. But it is important to realize that these feelings are part of the depression and do not reflect actual circumstances. As you recognize your depression and begin treatment, negative thinking will fade. In the meantime: • Engage in mild activity or exercise. Go to a movie, a ball game, or another event or activity that you once enjoyed. Participate in religious, social or other activities. • Set realistic goals for yourself. • Break up large tasks into small ones, set some priorities and do what you can as you can. • Try to spend time with other people and confide in a trusted friend or relative. Try not to isolate yourself, and let others help you. • Expect your mood to improve gradually, not immediately. Do not expect to suddenly “snap out of” your depression. Often during treatment for depression, sleep and appetite will begin to improve before your depressed mood lifts. • Postpone important decisions, such as getting married or divorced or changing jobs, until you feel better. Discuss decisions with others who know you 85

health Hygiene
It’s a Female Thing Everything You Need to Know About Vaginal Hygiene
T
here’s no way to tackle this topic without sounding “icky” but let us assure you that it’s as important (if not sexy) as an article on Jimmy Choos®. No woman loves her monthly flow (we know). But the good news is that the number of products available in the market is increasing at a rapid pace and women have more choices now than ever. Scented pads? No problem. Brands like Kotex® and Stayfree® have scented Pantiliners® and Flexi-Wing® support. Want something simple and unscented? Check. Want a smooth gliding tampon? Tampax Pearl® to the rescue. If you’re braving the summer outdoors during that time of the month, you may want to consider using products like Summer’s Eve® or Massengill® douches that keep your intimate areas smelling and feeling fresh. But did you know that you should change your tampons frequently to prevent infection? Left too long in the vagina, the tampon itself can cause infection if it is not clean. Pantiliners need to be changed as often as possible to 86
prevent infection, as do Maxi Pads. It may surprise you to know that the vagina (just like other parts of the body like the ear and the mouth) is normally inhabited by several microscopic organisms. The typical PH level in the vagina is acidic, and it prevents one type of organism from overpowering another. The healthy vagina actually smells sweet and pleasant. Any vaginal infection is immediately noticeable by its unpleasant smell. Bacteria that are typically found in the intestine (like yeast) are quite susceptible to lie “down there” as well. While measures like washing with a bidet and PH balancing soap are generally reserved for those with infection in the area, it is a good idea to practice douching, especially during that time of the month. Why is douching important? In a study published in the Maternal and Child Health Journal, researchers found that the concept and ethics of douching actually made women feel much more clean. This sentiment occurs at a relatively young age and is reinforced by family, friends and media.
Last but not least, it reinforces vaginal hygiene.
Some Common Vaginal Infections Yeast Infection A yeast infection is often self-medicated with over the counter drugs and products. Typically, the sufferer of the infection will exhibit vulvar itching, redness and irritation. The best recourse is to see a gynecologist, but there are other products like Vagisil (an anti-itch cream) and Monistat that do a great job. Bacterial Vaginosis This gives the characteristic fishy smell to the vagina and the best course of action is to see a gynecologist. This infection can produce a vaginal discharge and results from the overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina. Apart from seeing a doctor, the cure is to keep the vaginal area clean and sweet smelling. Trichomoniasis This is an STD that is characterized by itching, burning and a discharge. Candidiasis This is an infection that is caused by microscopic fungi or yeast. There are several species of these bacteria, or Candida and they are found on all parts of our body, but particularly in warm or moist areas. They can also be present in babies who have diaper rash.
Some Common Cures to Most Problems While several issues like smell and bacteria can be tackled by seeing your gynecologist, there are some solutions that are available with little expense or just a quick trip to the doctor: 1. Yogurt: Believe it or not, applying plain yogurt to your vaginal area can restore natural acidity and prevent bad
smells or eradicate bacteria. 2. Metronidazole tablets: 250 or 500 mg of these tablets can do wonders for your area. Just insert one deep inside the vagina and odor problems disappear in a matter of a day. 3. MetroGel-Vaginal or Cleocin: This 2% vaginal cream is an alternative to the tablets mentioned above, but this is typically more expensive. 4. Perfume: PH balanced perfume in small doses also can be effective but is only a temporary solution to the problem. 5. Antibiotics or Steroid Use: There is some evidence to suggest that the growth of yeast is linked to antibiotic or steroid use. Try to reduce the use of antibiotics as much as possible. Incontinence & Bladder Weakness Childbirth, age and weak pelvic muscles can all lead to incontinence and bladder weakness that causes a little wetness when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise. Apart from childbirth, other reasons for weak pelvic muscles include poor health or obesity, constipation, various medications and menopause. If you suffer from incontinence, talk to a doctor and see if prescription drugs are right for you. There are many over the counter aids like Depends® and Poise® to help you, especially if your incontinence is mild. Bladder weakness is worsened by diabetes and heavy alcohol use, among others. Kegel exercises are a good way to build stronger pelvic muscles without resorting to medication or other aids. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Kegel_exercise )The best time to do Kegel exercises is while you are urinating. Some women respond well to taking estrogen so they can improve bladder weakness, and yoga and meditative exercises can also help

How to Clinch That Job Techniques and Strategies to Give you Edge – Despite the Economy By Sabina Covo www.sabinacovo.com
Y
es, we’ve seen the dismal news: billionaire investment guru Warren Buffet recently declared that the world’s biggest economy had “fallen off a cliff;” the United States faces an 8.1 percent unemployment rate; and consumer confidence is at an all time low. But don’t fret! There are still several employers who are gunning to hire qualified candidates. Sure, it’s a buyer’s market–there are too many applicants for the job. But there are always techniques and strategies that you can employ to get an edge. Managers face a common scenario: an email inbox full of correspondence, hundreds of subject lines with the same tagline, “interested in your position,” and numerous cover letters to read. It’s definitely a pain to decide whom to interview; and if you’re on the other side of the fence, desperate job seekers face the frustration of not receiving a phone call for days or weeks. “We receive hundreds of resumes each day and we are constantly looking for people who are driven self-starters,” says Kevin Murray, president of online business VistaPrint. “A resume is an opportunity to brand yourself, and your brand should say that you can deliver and add value.” David Hults, a senior career coach, explains that your resume is your presentation, but it is not what is going to make you land your dream job, or even the interview for it. Remember that old saying, “ It is who you know.” According to Hults, networking is the key to getting a good recommendation that will put you face to face with the 90
right people and eventually, obtain the opportunity for an interview. Don’t get us wrong: sending your resume out is very important. But so are dressing for success, knowing what to say when you meet that key person, and sending a thank you note to your interviewer. But getting recommended by someone you know is the most important ingredient in the process of “landing” your dream job. A recommendation from someone you know who is well connected, will make the difference among the mountain of resumes that load a manager’s inbox. You will go from being an unknown sender to being “The friend of Mr. Smith” or “John Smith who met you at the networking event.” But before anything, you first need to know what your dream job is. A whopping seventy percent of the U.S. population performs a job that doesn’t match their degrees or their areas of expertise. Find the job you absolutely love (we’re talking a job that will allow you to lose track of time). After answering this question, a three step process follows: Do an evaluation of who you know that works in the field you’ve chosen; talk to these contacts about getting a job within this industry (whether it is the industry you are currently at, or a transition to another field); and finally submit your resume and get recommended by these key people. “Spend 90% of your time meeting with people and 10% sending out resumes,” says Hults. “Have real conversations with people. Say you want to have a transition even when you don’t know how an industry works. List three things
of yourself that would bring a result, show people your value, say: I am here meeting with you so you can help me understand a new market, or, here is what I know about the industry. The best way for finding the right places to network are when you join industry groups, read trade magazines and find events.” Networking is often easier than it seems. Tell everyone (from your mother-in-law to the mailman) what your “perfect job” looks like. You never know where a job lead might come from! Enlist others in helping you find your perfect job and make sure that you ask questions about their dreams so that you can help them as well. Once you get recommended by a ‘networker,’ focus the rest of your efforts in landing the job of your dreams. Aspects like the way you dress and behave will help you cement the job. Remember, your resume is the printed version of who you are, so make sure it is a great representation of yourself and your capabilities. Always keep in mind that people hire people who have accomplished results, not just held positions. “Focus on what you can deliver. For example, I created a Web site for ACME which enabled their sales to increase by 53% over 18 months,” explains job expert Laurent Duperval, president of Duperval Consulting. Always proofread your resume, and make sure it is aligned. The font you use must be clear, and the resume itself should be short. Long resumes are not read because managers don’t have time: they need to know the best of you, fast. Lynn Eisaguirre, a workplace expert calls this strategy “Go in with a bang.” She advises to dress the part without a flaw. “Go to all industry events. Dress impeccably - enlist a stylist if you need help. Look the part of your “perfect job.” Make sure you know where your industry dress standard is, if creative or buttoned down. Talk to everyone and make sure that you find out about his or her dreams so that you can be perceived as a giver. Think about what you might be able to offer them, not just what they can do for you,” she advises. Now you’ve gotten recommended, sent your resume and landed your interview, do your best to be successful at it. Seventy percent of your work is done. At this point, it is not about your connections, it is not about your experience – it is about you. Adjunct professor of Organizational Psychology Stephen Balzac reminds you that the key is to know that the interviewer is not your opponent. “Always get the interviewers talking: ask them about their concerns, issues, goals, etc. Then respond with relevant, brief vignettes about your accomplishments in previous jobs. Don’t focus on how you got your results; focus on the results,” says Balzac. Landing the job of your dreams may be tricky but it is worth it, even during rough economic times. This may be the perfect time to reinvent your profession or reinvent yourself, there are many sources on books and the internet that may help as guidance and it is just a matter of understanding how you want and then practicing how to get it.
Places to Post that Resume One of the best ways to get noticed when looking for a job is to post your resume on a good career webpage. There are several great places on the web that offer free resume placement, tools to upload your bio and your photograph. Remember to brand yourself when posting your resume since this will be your presentation. Be creative, use the wording that better describes you, and when using a profile picture, don’t forget to use one where you look professional and appropriate for getting the job you deserve. The following sites allow you to search for jobs as well as to post your resume and get noticed by employers and recruiters. www.careerbuilder.com www.craigslist.com (in your area) hotjobs.yahoo.com/create-resume www.monster.com www.latpro.com www.job.com http://www.simplyhired.com/ www.indeed.com www.resumes2work.com www.thejobspider.com www.123findjobs.com www.snagajob.com 91

Kate Winslet: the Actor’s Actor When the world first starting buzzing about this extraordinary British star in The Titanic, the media started to flamboyantly question if this Reubenesque actress would be a rising star or a one trick pony. Years later, after five Oscar nominations and winning her first for The Reader this year, Kate has quelled her doubters and continues to light the silver screen with all the sparkle of Halley’s Comet. Yes, Winslet is that rare, elusive thing: a true artist who puts her heart and soul into every role she plays. Like Meryl Streep whom she thanked at the 2009 Academy Awards (“I cannot believe we are all in the same category as Meryl Streep,” she wept), Winslet will likely be remembered as an icon who brought Hollywood to its knees in films like The Reader, Revolutionary Road to the fluffier comedies like The Holiday. “I wouldn’t dream of working on something that didn’t make my gut rumble and my heart want to explode,” she has said. And she’s certainly wound Hollywood around her thumb, eschewing roles that could have typeset her and instead pursuing Indie films like Hideous Kinky and Holy Smoke. It’s so easy these days for celebrities who are thrust into the spotlight at a tender age (in Winslet’s case it was 22) to fall prey media’s whimsy and end up in rehab (we won’t name names, but the list is as endless as the Amazon River). Winslet has managed to craft her career with unexpected roles like those in Iris, Quills and the flummoxed, haunting Clementine in Michel Gondry’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” It seems slightly unbelievable that an actress would have the 92

knowledge,” ‘‘she“I crave has said. “As an actor you can never know enough.”
versatility to play such diverse, semi-serious and often charming roles. From period pieces that taught her to “do research” to Titanic that taught her to “act in dialect,” the actress has sought to learn an impressive array of techniques and acting styles. In part, it is her maturity that sets her apart from the crowd. “Since I was 13 or 14 I’ve always felt older than I actually am,” she says. But being a “natural” born actress isn’t enough for her. Even though she has had commendations from acting coaches like Susan Hagerty (who worked on Winslet’s American accent for The Titanic), Winslet was not content to rest on her “natural acting ability” laurels. “ “I crave knowledge,” she has said. “As an actor you can never know enough.” Beginnings & Biography Kate Winslet was born on October 5, 1975 to stage actor Roger Winslet and stage actress Sally BridgesWinslet in Reading, England. The thespian influence was obviously there from the very beginning, and little Kate was considered a “natural,” acting in British TV. Her early appearances include the sci-fi series Dark Season at age 16 and her big break, Heavenly Creatures, at age 18. When Kate auditioned for a role in Sense and Sensibility, she caught the attention of British actress Emma Thompson who awarded the part of Marion Dashwood to Kate from over hundred other contestants. Thanks to Thompson’s sensibility, Kate snagged an Oscar nomination that year for Best Supporting Actress. After films like Jude and Hamlet, Winslet rose to fame in the blockbuster film Titanic, when she snagged yet another Oscar nomination for Best Actress. But she was not content to be typecast into an actress who pursued romantic blockbusters; instead, she starred in indie films and unconventional scripts. She married assistant director Jim Threapleton in 2000, and has one baby girl from the marriage (Mia Honey). She divorced Threapleton a year later and married her current husband, director Sam Mendes, in 2003. She has one son, Joe Alfie, from that marriage. The ability to be “someone else” is something that actors have to work hard at. Meryl Streep has said, “I’m curious about other people. That’s the essence of my acting. I’m interested in what it would be like to be you.” That same philosophy applies to Winslet, who wants to understand what it feels like to be the world at once: mother, daughter, jealous lover all in one polished, convenient acting bundle.
Accolades & the Future At age 31, Winslet became the youngest actress ever to earn a whopping five Oscar nominations. But success doesn’t come without prices or vices. Winslet has been once divorced and loves to smoke. “I don’t smoke around my kids,” she told Vanity Fair. “Like that makes it any better that I smoke at all, because obviously it doesn’t. But I don’t smoke in the house. I mean, I had a cigarette this morning, which is because I hadn’t been. Coffee and a cigarette: bingo!” It’s refreshing though, to know she’s human and normal. She talks about her trouble with acne (on her chin) and her vulnerability at being “judged.” But there’s no question about her ambition. “I practiced my Oscar acceptance speech in front of a mirror with a shampoo bottle when I was eight years old,” she stated at the 2009 Academy Awards. Winslet won many accolades for her performances in both The Reader and Revolutionary Road but she got the part in the latter because Nicole Kidman dropped out, citing her pregnancy. Winslet rejoices at this rare opportunity: “How the hell did I get that lucky [to have two compelling roles] in the same 12-month period?,” she says. “It’s really rare and remarkable, and I don’t take that position lightly. It might not happen like that again—I’m well aware of that. You know, the truth is, I’m just going to bloody well make the most of it.” The Reader’s heroine spans several age groups and Winslet’s task was to be makeup maven, in addition to romancing a boy half her age. It is Daldry’s first feature film since the Oscar-winning The Hours, and deals with a romance between a young boy and an older woman in post World War II Germany. Revolutionary Road was the more difficult, complex film. It reunited Leonardo DiCaprio and Winslet from their Titanic days. The film brings out the best – and worst – in a married couple who feels dissatisfied with their lackluster existence. What made this film such a phenomenal success was not only the acting (that goes without saying), but the subject matter. In an e-mail to Vanity Fair, DiCaprio wrote, “We both knew if we were to work together again we couldn’t tread on the kind of similar territory as Titanic. The characters [in Revolutionary Road] were a departure from what we did together before, and we knew we could push each other as actors to get some interesting performances out of each other.” He adds, “Kate is the most talented actress of her generation.” 93

Life Goals: Get Organized! You Need a System
From eHow.com:
How to Set Life Goals And Achieve Them

It’s an old adage that “if you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.” While this sounds like a hokey saying your father would preach to you when you were a teenager, your father was a wise man. If you create a list of life goals you may find the right road to get you there.
Instructions Things You’ll Need: a piece of paper you can carry in your wallet.
W
e all have good intentions about achieving goals, getting organized, improving our lives. But most of us never make the changes we long for. We don’t get started, or we lose momentum along the way. To have the best chance of achieving your goals and objectives, you need a system – a structure that organizes everything and creates an easy-to-follow process for you. Without a system, you’re constantly struggling with a crushing mountain of possibilities. No wonder you procrastinate! With a systematic approach, you avoid indecision and overwhelm and can simply focus on following the steps toward your objectives. You use your energy where it counts. The Power of Checklists One of the smartest tools for boosting your chances of success are checklists. Here’s why: Checklists get you started. The hardest part of any goal, project or life change can be overcoming inertia and getting started. Where do you begin? What steps are needed? What else should you think of? Whether it’s moving forward in your career, taking charge of finances, losing weight, personal development or other challenges – the beauty of checklists is that they give you ready-made action plans. No books to read, no brains to storm, no navels to ponder, no excuses for procrastinating! Here are three great websites. So the hardest part – starting – becomes clear and simple. Getting Organized http://www.getting-organized-wizard.com/ Mindtools http://www.mindtools.com/index.html

Step 1 Set aside some quiet time alone to contemplate the life ahead of you. Make sure you are free of distractions and have an open mind. Step 2 Write down on a piece of paper the major goals you’d like to reach during your life. These need not be heavy and philosophical... but they do need to be specific. “Personal growth” is a bit too broad and hard to measure. Instead, try something like “learn a 2nd language by the time I’m 30.” Step 3 Your list may include personal, professional, financial, spiritual goals. This is your life – make sure these are your life goals, not other’s goals for your life. Step 4 Once you have have written this comprehensive list, ask yourself if any of these are “nice-to-haves.” For example, is one of your life goals really to have your picture taken in front of each of the 7 Wonders of The World or did you just read about it in an in-flight magazine and thought, “That would be cool.” Once you have removed the nice-to-haves, try to get down to 10 of your most important goals. Step 5 Now take your top ten goals and place a time next to each of them. It is useless to say “make a million dollars” unless you put a concrete timeline when you want to achieve that goal. A target date focuses your energies and helps you prioritize. Step 6 Put the list in your wallet and revisit the list 48 hours later to see if this is a true reflection of your life goals. If it is, congratulations! If not, start over at Step #1 and see where the 2nd round takes you. Goto www.eHow.com for this and other great how-to articles.
ARTIST BIO: Shontelle SHONTELLE is the 23 year-old Bajan singer-songwriter set to take the world by storm after signing with music mogul Steve Rifkind’s SRC records. SHONTELLE has always been an over-achiever, being at the top of her class and competing across the island in several sports. However her true calling as a prolific songwriter and talented singer would draw her away from both the field and classroom and onto center stage. Her album “Shontelligence,” offers a variety of hits including her debut smash “T-Shirt” which shot up the charts and was the “she-anthem” of the year. Head- strong track, “Battle Cry,” speaks to the generation so much that the Obama Campaign chose to feature it on the “Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement” compilation. Rounding out the album is the snake-charmer influenced and dancehall favorite “Focus Pon Me,” and “Superwoman” which speaks to female empowerment and social consciousness proving that Shontelle is in fact a talented and intelligent artist on the rise. Enjoying her increasing popularity, SHONTELLE remains humble and plans to carve out her own niche within the music industry. In 2008, SHONTELLE became spokesmodel for Veet®.

Stretch Your Dinner Dollar It’s Possible to
Eat Like a King By Following These Smart Tips By Megan Sarah Johnson
W
ith store prices skyrocketing for items as diverse as diapers to doormats, it can be a difficult time to put three meals a day on the table for you and your family. While restaurants are struggling to fill up their seats on a nightly basis, American families are finding it difficult to leave the grocery store without recognizing incredible price increases with their spending. Luckily, with a dose of creativity and a mission to save money, your weekly dinner budget can stretch almost as far as the eye can see. So take a look at our nine tips to maximize the items in your pantry without maxing out your wallet!
time, get an organizer that divides the coupons into sections. Have one small folder for cleaning products, one for canned goods, etc. By keeping things organized, you don’t have to search through the entire bunch every time you roll around to the next aisle. 3. Store Flyers are Vital for Buyers. If you strictly shop at one grocery store then grab their weekly flyer on Sundays and plan your meals around that week’s offerings. Usually there’s a price special in each department, whether it’s produce, meats, dairy, etc. Chances are you can build an entire week’s worth of nutritious meals by scouting out your store’s bargains.
1. Sunday is meant for Saving. Whether you read the Peekskill Post or the New York Times, your Sunday newspaper is absolutely stuffed with coupons. Usually, two pages of coupons come with the Sunday newspaper, and they can be used everywhere from your local pharmacy to the grocery store. Make sure to browse through each page and snip out not only the coupons you’re planning on using for that week’s shopping, but those that can be useful in the future.
4. Shop-Hop. If you’re not against spending a little more time cruising through the grocery aisles, you can search for bargains by frequenting multiple supermarkets in your region. Since all sales are not created equal, one store may have an item on sale that another does not. If you take a few minutes to look through store flyers, take a look at not just your usual grocery store, but those in neighboring areas. Sometimes there are great bargains right around the corner.
2. Snip, then Shop. While lots of people cut out coupons every time a newspaper hits the driveway, a large majority of people flat out forget to bring the coupons along to the store. By stashing the coupons in your wallet, they are readily available every time you purchase something. If you have lots of coupons that you’ve filed away over
5. How does Your Garden Grow? Depending on what area of the country and climate you live in, gardening can be a great opportunity to also save on fruits and vegetables. By creating a small garden, you can easily grow vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. If you’re willing to invest in a blueberry bush,
96
you and your family can have years of nutritious berries. In addition to delicious fruit salads, jams and jellies can be made from your homegrown fruit and preserved for as long you would like. Also, don’t discount the delicious pies and pastries that can be made as desserts with your home-grown treats. If you’re a city-dweller, don’t feel like growing your own produce is a lost cause. The phenomenon of apartment gardening is popular for a reason! Fire escapes can be great places to stick a tomato plant in the summertime.
8. Bulk Can Mean Bargains. Big bulk stores like Sam’s, BJ’s and Costco can be great places to find highly priced items cheaper. Unfortunately, a lot of people tend to over-spend on items they have no use for. Don’t buy twelve pounds of Swedish meatballs simply because the price is low. Search for items that are often more expensive in your regular grocery store and compare those to the bulk store price. Big ticket items, such as meats, can be kept in the freezer and then defrosted later.
6. Switch it Up. Planning your meals based on super sleuthing doesn’t mean you have to eat the same thing for dinner every night. Delicious chicken breasts from one night can be chopped up over a Caesar salad on another. Less expensive items such as rice and pastas are often sold in large quantities and can be mixed with proteins easily. In addition, casseroles are simple and easy to make for the entire family in a pinch. To make it kid-friendly, just sprinkle cheese on top!
9. Buying $5 Coffee doesn’t Make You Wealthy. While you may enjoy that triple no-whip cappuccino sprinkled with nutmeg, we can guarantee your wallet does not. Buying your coffee every morning is a huge bite out of your weekly budget. Consider a $5 a-day coffee habit, seven days a week. That’s $35 weekly, and $1820 a year! Do yourself a favor and invest in a coffee pot. And if you aren’t a fan of the typical Cup-o’-Joe, espresso drinks can be made at home if you’re willing to get a little creative with a French coffee press.
7. Technology is Key. The internet has changed forever the way we shop. Besides the innovation of online shopping that has enhanced the world for everyone, it’s also an amazing source of coupons that aren’t readily available in your weekly newspaper. Remember, Google is your friend. A quick search on “coupon sites” in any search engine can result in multiple dollars worth incredible savings for you and your family.
Grocery shopping doesn’t have to be the torturous experience it’s made out to be. In the same way you attack a department store looking for a deep discount on that pair of four-inch Mary Jane pumps, hit the grocery store with a mission to get the same bargain. The only difference is instead of filling up your closet with the latest fashions, you’re dressing your dining room table in style for the whole family to enjoy. 97

A Turks & Caicos Beach Wedding An A-Z Guide to Getting Married on the Island By Charu Suri photography Tropical Imaging www.tropicalimaging.com
Shoot location Turks and Caicos
I
t was a rainy day in New York when my plane took off to Providenciales (aka “Provo), the most developed island in the Turks & Caicos chain. My mission was to see if the beaches were suitable for an island wedding, given all the hype the island has encountered (Conde Nast Traveler has voted Provo has having the “Best Beach” several years running). I stayed at the resort called, The Sands at Grace Bay beach (www.thesandsresort.com). This beach was legendary because of its pristine, fine stretch of sand, and when I arrived, it did not disappoint. Like a picture postcard, Grace Bay beach sprawls for a famous stretch of 12 long miles. My one-bedroom oceanview condo felt like a large suite, with its gigantic living room, beautifully equipped kitchenette, bathroom filled with top quality beauty products and bedroom large enough to hold a party in. I had beautiful views of the ocean and felt like a bride on the eve of her wedding because the sunshine was constant and all I could see was sand, palm trees and bougainvillea for miles.

Hemingways Turks & Caicos has many hotels and restaurants that will gladly cater to any beach wedding. A few properties stand out because of their price and value and among them are The Sands, Sibonne, Coral Gardens, and Grace Bay Club. The Sands’ hangout and eating hotspot is the restaurant, Hemingways, where you can sample the island’s hottest drinks (the “Rum Punch” is a local favorite), sample the world famous conch salad, or eat seafood that’s fresh from local waters. Hemingways is also the area of most of the resort’s wedding receptions. Planning a Wedding on Turks & Caicos You’ll get the best results from a professional wedding planner, but typically a resort like The Sands will do a lot of the work for a smaller party. This includes getting a marriage from the pastor (you need to fill out some paperwork to make it all legal on the island), recommending photographers and a florist, setting up a reception at Hemingways and procuring a wedding cake.
A couple will also typically enjoy a “sunset” cruise the eve of the wedding for the bridal party, complete with drinks and champagne. “The traditional beach wedding typically ranges between 30-40 people” says Jason, an event planner at the hotel. The Sands has some reasonably priced packages. For $1200, you can get a basic wedding package that includes chairs, paperwork done for a marriage license, a cake for 8-10 people, pastor fees and a beach setup. So if you’re planning to get married in even a matter of days and want a beach wedding in Turks & Caicos, it’s quite possible and not terribly expensive. A typical package – with drinks, dinner, ceremony and reception—will set you back in the range of $5,000 to $10,000. If you compare the value of what you’re getting on an island to the cost of a wedding in the United States, you’ll find that there is some exceptional value overseas…and on the beach, nonetheless. Some packages can include a post-nuptial trip where the couple is taken to a deserted island (remember only eight islands in the Turks & Caicos chain are inhabited) where
they get to spend an entire day. Accompanying you on this trip are several hampers filled with food and chilled champagne, as well as snorkeling gear. The boat drops you off and picks you up whenever you want it to. Cuisine Every wedding caterer accommodates children and their dietary needs. From pizzas, grilled cheeses to pastas. “The chef at Hemingways can accommodate every dietary need,” says Jason, an event planner at the hotel. The same can be said for chefs across the island. No matter where you stay at Turks & Caicos, there is a high probability that you’ll find a talented chef who can accommodate every dietary need, be it kosher or ethnic. Since a large portion of the culinary ingredients is imported from the mainland, esoteric menu choices like Vietnamese cuisine or Thai food are not impossible,
99
but certainly more difficult to find than within the continental United States. The traditional wedding menus feature seafood and American culinary staples. Wedding Planners
Turks and Caicos Wedding
This professional wedding planning source works with most properties on the island and can help you plan a wedding from A-Z. “We will take care of everything except your flight tickets and your dress,” says Estelle Carstens from Nila Destinations (www.niladestinations. com), one of the top wedding planning agencies on the island. The ideal plan would be to have several conversations with the wedding planner over several months, but “I’ve done weddings with two weeks’ notice!” says Estelle. A professional planner can take into account your every whimsy: if you want a “sunrise” wedding, a wedding on a catamaran itself (it’s happened), even an underwater wedding! They will send you options for photography, documentation and requirements for marriage (there are quite a few!). You need notarized copies of your birth certificate, passport and a bunch of other important paperwork if you want a legal union to take place on the fine beaches of the Turks. Nila has great relationships with the bakers, florists and photographers on the island and can pull off any décor you’d wish for: from ethnic to ornate floral! Flowers Everything is imported from the mainland because very little grows on the island. But the great thing is that there are so many reasonably-priced florists on Turks & Caicos who can give you centerpieces, corsages, bouquets and boutonnieres for a song. The common flowers are roses, lilies and bougainvillea; flowers that will cost a bit more include peonies and orchids.

Photographers There are photographers and there are artists. Tropical Imaging (www.tropicalimaging.com) is both. Undoubtedly the finest photography service on the island, if not in the Caribbean, Tropical Imaging is the brainchild of former Green Beret Andrew Mann. “I really like my photos to tell the story,” says Mann. To achieve this, he meets with the wedding couple and really tries to get the inside scoop on what makes the bride and bridegroom tick, because the photos go beyond being mere snapshots of a moment on a day. Almost all of Tropical Imaging’s photos attempt to go beyond the staple “picture perfect” photo, as you can see from the photos on these pages. Tropical Imaging also provides a “video” story option for each wedding. In addition to standard photos, they will create a mini movie that captures intimate moments from the wedding day.
Spa This story would not be complete without mentioning the superb treatments available at Spa Tropique, which has many locations on the island. There is a spa on the premises of The Sands and it offers several delicious treatments perfect for the bridal party. From the classic Swedish massage Knotty but Nice; to the Deep Tissue massage called Muscles in Knead; to a Romantic Couples massage (Double Decadence), this spa makes up in value service what it lacks in outward opulent dĂŠcor. It also has luxury facials including a rehydrating water lily facial to a facial for men called the Hopsicle (which includes a Brew). www.spatropique.com

A Family Vacation in Las Vegas (and no, not at the Casino!) Las Vegas, Nevada is not usually the first place that comes to mind (unless your whole family is over 21) when thinking about a great family getaway, But in reality, there are a ton of alternatives to the typical Vegas vacation. Fortunately for me, my job is to find them and share them with you.
soak in the hot tub before turning in for the night. We were beat from the day’s activities and were rocked gently to sleep by the subtle movement of the water below us. The night was so beautifully lit only by the stars. A lone coyote was walking the beach and occasionally howling softly.
Recently some girlfriends and I wanted to get away for a few days with the kids. When you have to find someplace that will be relaxing for you, fun for the 5 to 9 year olds, and still give the early teens something to do, you’re in for a challenge. The answer; Lake Mead!
After breakfast the following morning, we all wanted to put our feet on some solid ground for a while so we grabbed some bottles of water and hit the beach for a hike. When we reached the “top” of the beach, we saw our monster houseboat below; it seemed Lilliputian. The view was absolutely magnificent with the massive lake sprawling out in all directions. We finished up our day with some more swimming and sliding off the back of the houseboat, of course another hot tub soak, and a shared bottle of wine after the kids were in bed.
Lake Mead was formed by the Hoover Dam blocking the Colorado River creating an immense reservoir in the middle of the desert. But discovering the history of the area is only part of the fun. We decided to rent a houseboat for the weekend and make a mini cruise for ourselves. By the second day we wanted a little more extreme adventure. We picked up a ski boat from the marina and raced around the lake. It was my first time piloting a boat so I figured I’d take it easy, but by the end I was whipping around like I’d been boating all my life. No one was brave enough to try skiing so we tossed some inner tubes out and away we went. After that we picked up some jet skis, again something I’d never done before, but we spent hours skimming across the surface of the lake, jumping over wakes. We returned to our oasis for some dinner and a much needed

When we finally returned the houseboat to the marina, we headed home. It felt like we spent the weekend a long way from home but it was only about twenty miles. As for my beauty notes? To get myself bikini ready I started with Hawaiian Tropic’s “Island Radiance” self tanner in mediumdark for an all over glow. I kept my lips moist and hydrated with Almay’s whipped gloss in “Shining Bare.” You’ll find all my outdoor explorations featured here as well as on my website at www.getawayforaday.tv. I’d love to hear about your favorite getaways too. Tell me about it and perhaps I’ll try it out and share it here in a future issue.
