Plush and Ruffled

Winter is cold enough without it being sexy.

Here, you’ll find gorgeous clothes that will make you look plush and ruffled all the way through. Frills are big this season, as are tweed clothing and vivid purples. Whether you’re going to a cocktail party, work or to the post office, remember to rock the cold weather with spring in your step. This is the season of cocktail parties, so if you’re going black and white, wear a delicate blouse paired with a basic black pair of pants. This outfit can transition very nicely from day to evening if you wear a blazer during the day.

Bringing Sexy Backless We’ve seen a stream of backless dresses this year, and celebrities continue to prove time and again on the red carpet that this trend is very much alive.

Trend Alert A smooth, toned back is relatively easy to obtain. All it takes is some good exfoliation and evenly tanned skin. Of course, keeping the front covered is a must since the look will be mysterious. This style is perhaps the best way to show a bit of skin in the unexpected place. See how the celebrities on the facing pages are embracing this bold and beautiful trend.

Glam Holiday Hair You Can Do At Home! This is the season to glam up your do. Beautiful hair is an accessory, so whether you’re going with a 1950's look, a modern style, or beautiful, loose curls, remember you can achieve all this at home for less. Flora Wade, freelance makeup artist and stylist, offers these tips as you prepare to look your festive best this season.

Beautiful, Loose Curls Using medium size rollers, set your hair in hot rollers. Make sure you keep any bangs you have facing forward; then put the rest of your hair in rollers facing under in a basic roller set. Let the rollers cool down. Then remove the rollers and backcomb your hair in sections, starting in the front, and then moving back to the crown of the head. Softly smooth out the hair blending the teased sections together using a bristle brush concentrating mainly on the roots. Do not over brush. Set with hairspray to secure the style.

Chic Updo

How-to Party Hair

Set hair in rollers following the same methodology as the previous style. But this time, pull the hair up into a high ponytail. Backcomb hair until you have achieved the desired volume. Using bobby pins that match your hair color, take sections of the hair, tuck them under and pin into the base of the ponytail. Set with hairspray to secure the style. You can amp up your holiday look by adding a headband.

34

How-to Party Hair

1950's Glam Wash hair, apply mousse and blow dry or air dry. Make a deep side part and set your hair in hot rollers using the smallest size roller. Make sure to turn the rollers under. Then back roll the hair as you would normally, once again turning the rollers under. Let the hair set until the rollers are cool. Remove rollers and making sure that the hair is cool, brush out curls with a bristle brush so the curls blend together. Make sure not to over brush the hair because you may loose some of the curl. Set with hairspray to secure the style.

35

How-to Party Hair

1950's Updo Follow the same technique from the previous style. Backcomb the hair to add texture and volume. Using bobby pins that match the color of your hair, randomly pick up sections of the hair and pin it until you find your desired look. It’s ok if it looks a little messy. That will give the style a more modern edge. Set with hairspray to secure the style.

here’s no doubt about it: this is the toughest season on your skin. Your cells get robbed of essential moisture, nourishment and vitamins. Your skin feels parched and no amount of moisturizing seems to help. Follow these simply procedures and you’ll be more radiant than ever before. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize We can’t say it enough: don’t skimp on the moisture during the colder months. If you have acne prone skin, then use an oil-based moisturizer, but don’t skimp on moisturizers that contain a tiny bit of oils (make sure they are non-comedogenic). Why? Your skin may actually breakout more from having too little moisture than from too much moisture. Choose a thick, oil-based moisturizer for very dry skin. A good face moisturizer is Oil of Olay (1), and Nivea Smooth Sensation (2), which is an oil with avocado as an active ingredient. www.oilofolay.com, www.nivea.com If you’re prone to breakouts, consider covering up your blemishes with New Clearasil 4 Hour Rapid Action Treatment Cream and Pimple Clearing Pen (3), which treat without over- drying the skin. They are your tools to fight blemishes this season (www.clearasil.com) Robin Evans, owner of Robin Evans Skincare recommends that you stick to a diet rich in essential fatty acids during the winter. Also consider eating more fish, nuts, and avocado, and drink lots of water. “Flaxseed 42

and evening primrose oils also help,” she says. Choose the Right Cleanser We know that cleaning your face is as important as drinking pure water. So this time of year is a good season to evaluate your cleansing strategy. There are so many products and technologies available on the market today that you don’t have to settle for plain old soap when it comes to cleaning your face (although we do love Purpose!). For mature skins, we recommend Dove ProAge Foaming Facial Cleanser (4), (www.dove.com). The active ingredients in this cleanser will optimize cell turnover as it rubs your skin squeaky clean. It contains glycerin and olive oil. If you have uneven skin tone and are prone to breakouts, consider using Ambi Even & Clear Foaming Facial Cleanser, (5) (www.ambiskincare.com). It is so gentle and frothy and there is no pore-clogging residue. Your Hair Needs Moisture Too Chances are that your hair will become as dry as the Atacama Desert during the colder months. Philip Kingsley, hair guru and founder of his eponymous line has written two core books you may want to read on maintaining your beautiful locks: The Hair Bible: A Complete Guide to Health & Care, and Happy Hair Days: 50 Tips for Healthy Hair. Some of his strongest advocates have included Audrey Hepburn and Candice Bergen.

13 If your hair is sensitive, “use “baby” shampoos,” he says. “The best baby shampoos are your own shampoos diluted with purified water. And wash your hair daily!” Kingsley also believes that there is no such thing as “over conditioning” the hair, so consider investing more into great conditioners this season and drench it all over your hair for added moisture. If you’re into botanicals, consider using Alba Botanica Shampoo, (6) (www.albabotanica.com), which will keep your hair soft and manageable. Dove Daily Moisture Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner is also a great bet for added shine and softness, (7) (www.dove.com)

Make Your Makeup Shine With Glosses, Lippies and Rich Colors For Eyes and Nails Lips Need to Be Nourished, then Dressed Start with moisturizing your lips first. There are so many lip balms that abound. We love Softlips, (8), which is emollient and pencil thin that it can be tucked into your pocketbook. It also contains SPF 20. www.softlips.com If you want to exude a brilliant smile and love a good old gloss, try CoverGirl’s Wetslicks, (9), which contain Crest peppermint oils. They’ll make you smell fresh and tingly and whiten your smile too! (www.covergirl.com.) If you’re dressing your lips for parties, then Milani’s Lip Mixers, (10), will jazz up that pout. The glosses are layered with several colors and you can mix them up for a sheen that’s out of this world. Try their new lipstick duo too. To see some of these amazing colors, goto (www.milani.com). 44

The Eyes Should Smoulder Eyeshadow takes center stage now. L’Oreal’s HIP Duo in Gilded & Platinum, (11), will help you achieve a smoky, party look, and the new Mineral Eyeliner in Defining Onyx & Defining Olive is not only sexy but also good for your skin because of the nutrients. www.loreal.com Revlon’s Cream to Powder Eyeshadow in “Spice” , (12), offers beautiful and elegant colors to flatter every skin tone. Plus the new Lash Fantasy Total Definition Mascara will make your lashes seem like they are six inches long. www.revlon.com Foundation Every outfit should have a flawless foundation, and winter is no exception to the rule. We love Neutrogena Mineral Sheers new Liquid Foundation, (13), with its built in brush. The coverage goes on flawlessly and all you need is a dab. www.neutrogena.com We are ga-ga over Revlon’s amazing Beyond Natural Skin Matching Makeup, (12), . This makeup will adapt to your skin’s color like a fish takes to water. The coverage is perfect. If you’re a mineral powder type of girl, we recommend L’Oreal’s Bare Naturale Pressed Powder, (11) which will flatter your face and leave it dressed, not over dressed. Nails Beautiful, flawless nails are like the cherry on top of the cake. This season’s color? Gold, of course. We love Revlon’s “Gold Get ‘Em,” (12), which gives you a subtle hint of gold without making you look like Goldfinger’s cousin.

W

allpaper originated during Renaissance Europe and initially made use of the print-making technique of woodcut. Initially, it was reserved for the very rich and the emerging gentry, who were used to handing large tapestries on their walls.

There are so many varieties of wallpaper, with textures, colors and designs. It is important to take into account the style of your home and of your rooms before you pick the right one. For example, if you live in a Victorian home, choosing really avant-garde wallpaper will look a little odd for a room.

The tapestries were of course, not an economical option for everyone; therefore, wallpaper gained immense popularity. Originally, the wallpaper featured scenes that were on tapestries, and sometimes people hung large loose sheets on the walls that showcased these scenes.

Generally, darker shades are better for rooms that have low lighting or candle-lit dinners, like dining rooms. For the nursery, make use of fun and colorful patterns, whether you choose Disney or Trace Wall Designs (these are traceable wall murals; www.tracedesigns.net; www.wallnutz.com).

Currently, wallpaper is staging a big comeback in the world of interior design. When laid properly, wallpaper can last much longer than standard paint. Good quality wallpaper can last 10-15 years and hence is both attractive and economically lasting. Wallpaper can also absorb sound and reduce the echo factor in a room. It can also eliminate or reduce the visibility of wall imperfections (think uneven surfaces or blotchy wall texture). Painting is simple and painless but choosing the right wallpaper can be a puzzle. With so many styles and options, how do you know you’re choosing the paper that’s relevant to your room’s needs? Color This might be a really obvious statement, but the first strategy to choosing good wallpaper for your room is to look at the major color in a room. Do you live in an area that is particularly cold? If so, you may want to consider “warm” colors like reds, yellows, browns instead of choosing wallpaper that is dictated by cooler colors like blues and beiges. Style of Your Home

Thickness Choosing “good quality” wallpaper does not necessarily mean spending more money. Often, thicker wallpaper will last longer than tissue thin paper. Thicker papers are apt to tear less, and stretch less. The weight of the paper also will let you get straighter lines. Yes, they will definitely take up more paste, but they will be less prone to wear and tear. Patterns It’s very tempting to pick out a complicated pattern with birds and golden bees floating around, but if you’re going to wallpaper your home yourself, remember that complex patterns are very hard to put up seamlessly. For one, the lines will show if they’re not perfectly aligned, and each sheet needs to be put up so carefully that it becomes painfully time consuming. Also, if the patterns are so busy, your guests may actually get dizzy! Vertical stripes are always the easiest to align, as is solid wallpaper, but why would you put up wallpaper in a solid color when you can just as easily paint the wall? Part of wallpaper’s charm and appeal are the patterns, of course. Just remember not to get one that’s as complicated as an Italian fresco and you should be fine. 55

Easy Steps to Put Up Wallpaper 1. Measurements are key. Measure your wall space, starting from the ceiling to the floor. 2. Cut a piece of wallpaper to fit the measurements (do it ten feet at a time to make it easier for you). Be sure to leave a little margin of wallpaper at the bottom to snip off later. 3. In the olden days you had to apply your own paste to the paper, but now they have prepasted wallpaper. We recommend the latter because it can save you much time and agony. 4. Apply sizing on the wall BEFORE you paste the paper. Sizing is a prepping paste that allows the wallpaper to maneuver on the wall so you can smooth out wrinkles. A good primer is SHIELDZ, that helps the paper go on easier. 5. If you don’t want to deal with all the preparation and the sizing etc., you may want to consider a very easy-to-install paper. Info at www.Easy-Walls.com. 6. You want to clean the walls thoroughly. The best way to do this is to wash the walls with ammonia and water and allow them to dry. 7. Adhere the paper to the wall, glue side down. 8. Use a seam roller to smooth out any wrinkles and let it dry for a few hours. 9. Using a sharp knife, trim the edges to size. 10. Repeat these steps for the remaining portion of the wall.

Arguably the most difficult task, removing old wallpaper is no joy and can take hours. However, follow these tips and they will make your life much easier: 1. Score the wall with PaperTiger, which is a scoring tool. You’ll have to apply a wallpaper stripper like DIF, which is a liquid concentrate or ready to use gel. PaperTiger basically eliminates the need for complex procedures like steamers. It has steel teeth and won’t damage the walls but simply removes the wallpaper so you can strip it down with ease. 2. If the wallpaper is particularly stubborn, you can steam it, but make sure your walls are not too old or porous because the steam will damage them. 3. Misting the wallpaper with a spray and a mixture 58

How to Remove Old Wallpaper

of hot water and wallpaper remover is also another inexpensive way to remove it. But this process can get quite messy. 4. Now, you need to remove the old glue that’s on the back of the paper. The way you can easily do this is to apply enzyme-based gel remover. 5. Now you can finally remove the paper. There will likely be some residue left on the walls (thin layers of old paper). This is natural and to be expected. 6. Now wash the wall with ammonia and water and apply primer over the wall (even over the bits of thin paper left over). 7. Your wall is now ready for a solid coat of fresh paint or new paper!

When it’s cold and snowy outside, gardening is probably the last thing on your mind. Winter is the season when plants shrivel up and trees become bare. But there’s nothing to prevent you from having a garden inside your home, is there? Of course, there are some key points to remember when transporting your plants inside. Make sure they get enough light (natural or artificial). Avoid draughts inside your home; apart from you getting the chills, it’s a surefire way to kill your plants. Here’s are some of plants you can safely bring indoors.

 Herbs An herb garden is by far one of the easiest ways to show off your green thumb indoors. Having an herb garden in your window is not only wholesome, but quite easy to manage (especially if you station the garden in the kitchen). All you require is a flowerbed or pots, for the herbs and seeds. From fresh parsley, thyme, basil, dill, oregano and peppermint, the sky is the limit for growing the freshest herbs in the coldest of winters. 63

Bringing the Garden Indoors

To plant, just fill the pots or planters with soil and bury the seeds. Remember to water them regularly and give them plenty of natural or artificial light. You’ll see the herbs sprout within a few weeks.

 Vegetables Tomatoes are not just for the outdoors. If you had the opportunity to sample succulent vegetables all year round, wouldn’t you leap at the chance? Many people overlook indoor vegetable gardening. True, it’s not the easiest of hobbies, but with a little skill and patience, you can master this great art. Remember, you’re not going to be able to grow your melons, squash or potatoes indoors, but certainly some items like leafy greens, tomatoes, root vegetables will do well with some TLC. • Seeds are not going to be easy to come by in the winter, so remember to buy them in the summer if you can. • Do not use regular gardening soil indoors. Use a lightweight soil that won’t foster too many bugs. A good mix is 1 part potting soil, 1 part vermiculite, 1 part peat, and 1 part perlite. • Make sure you water the plants every day, or at least every other day. Remember that they cannot get water from the reservoir in garden soil. • It’s best to grow vegetables like bell peppers and tomatoes in well-insulated rooms, and not on the cold porches. • Remember to fertilize the soil before you plant the seeds because frequent watering will deplete nutrients.

 Flowering Houseplants Who wouldn’t like some fresh blooms all year round in the house? Flowers are just great mood lifters and you can feel good about having colored plants indoors while the snow is raging outdoors! They will brighten up any blustery day. • African Violets: These are relatively easy to grow, and they have velvety leaves and dainty flower clusters. They also come in a variety of colors. All you have to do is water them when the soil is dry, and make sure they face natural sunlight. Piece of cake, right? • Cyclamens, Azaleas: They are delicate and fragile looking flowers. But the blooms last a relatively long time and they come in colors from coral to purple to pink. • Rhododendrons: No, they’re not just for the outdoors or for your patio. They grown quite well indoors, and they have delicate, papery blooms in shiny colors from pink to purple. The blooms won’t last forever, but the plant’s shiny leaves will last throughout the year. • Passionflower vine: This is a different type of houseplant from your basic Begonia or African Violet. It requires a tad bit more care because it needs a trellis (remember, it’s a vine), but it will emanate a delicious fragrance in your home. • Christmas Cactus: A very aptly named plant, this cactus actually blooms in the winter. It’s a succulent so it doesn’t need any maintenance (well, not too much anyway), and there are several colors of flowers (from white to red to yellow).

• Amaryllis plant: This trumpet shaped flower is bright red and has a bit of green at its throat. Passionflower Amaryllis

 Potted Plants and Vines

Some Indoor Gardening Tips

Green is in – both environmentally and horticulturally. Potted plants are the best things to happen a house since good lighting. If you don’t really have a green thumb, select low maintenance potted plants. On the other hand, if you have a lot of love for the green friends in your life, go wild in selected indoor trees and palms and orchids that will need special care.

1. When the roots of potted plants begin to compact into a ball, then its time to re-pot. Several plants can grow out of their current container. If the roots are long and gnarly, for example, don’t confine the plant in a small container. Give the roots room to breathe.

• Angel Ivy Ring Topiary: This ivy (also known as wire vine) grows really quickly and can easily wind round poles and rings. Ivy is a good selection for a trellis structure as well, as well as for walls that you’d like to cover with greens.

2. Choose the location wisely. Make sure you research if your plant needs a lot of light, or relatively low light. If the plant requires a lot of light, then make sure you place the pot near a window, preferable one that is not shielded by blinds or curtains. Don’t place the plant near direct or harsh sunlight though, or the leaves will turn brown.

• Ficus Tree: This is a popular indoor house tree. It has braided stems and leaves that are unique and patterned.

3. Take care not to over water a plant. This can cause leaves to turn yellow or brown and drop rapidly.

• Aloe: If you’ve wanted a low maintenance plant, this is your chance. It doesn’t need much light and is also a great indoor purifier.

4. Some plants (like orchids) are very sensitive to their environment. Take care not to move them too often, because they can die.

• Rubber Plant: Also known as ficus elastica, this is an ideal indoor plant because it has thick oval shaped leaves and is very pretty. It requires medium to low light. Remember to water it very regularly, and definitely at least once a week.

5. Since lightweight soil (indoor gardening soil) does not always have the richness of outdoor potting soil, it is best to use fertilizers to supplement the soil. This will add healthy years to your plant’s life.

• Kentia Palm: This is actually an indoor tree, and has a breezy, airy look and is an excellent space filler for a corner. They do just fine in a small pot or container and are sold when they are about 5 feet. They can grow to well over 12 feet tall. They require medium light and a lot of watering, but take care not to over water or else the leaves will start to fall and the root will rot.

Bringing the Garden Indoors

More Tips and Tricks for your Indoor Garden 1. Lighting for the plant. Now this is the first thing that you should consider when starting your inside garden, how much light does the plant need? This is important because most houses wouldn’t have enough light to handle a plant that needs a lot of light. So, the lighting in your house becomes essential even before you start your inside garden or bringing any plant into your house, because the amount of light in your house will determine what types of plants would grow there. So make sure to consider this before bringing any plant into your house. You should select plants that require medium to low light, unless you plan on supplying the plant with artificial lighting. Some plants that are medium to low light would be a Boston fern, Philodendrons, etc. Here are a few other tips regarding lighting in the house: During the summer months put the plants outside, this will usually boost up the plant and give it a new spurt of energy. Because a plant will turn to the light, you should rotate the plant, this will promote an upright growth. There are a few ways you can tell if your plant is getting enough light or not. If it isn’t getting enough light, it usually will have small leaves, thin stems, and the color of the plant will be lighter than usual. Artificial lighting, with a fluorescent lamp, etc, can be used to supplement a house with limited natural lighting. Condition your plants when you buy them. You have to do this because the place where you buy the plant will usually have more lighting than your home and the plant can go into a shock of sorts and lose it’s foliage. Now to condition your plant, make sure you give it the maximum amount of light your house has, and then gradually reduce the amount of light to be equal to the spot where you want the plant to end up. 2. Watering Plants: Not every plant has the same needs when it comes to watering, but there are some basic rules you should follow: Wet the soil thoroughly, and the water should be able to drain out of the bottom of the pot. How much you water, and how often purely depends on the type of plant that you are dealing with, so read the seeds or ask the person selling you the plant, how much water does this plant require. Now, don’t over water, that’s probably what kills most 66

plants. If you have too wet of a soil constantly it will lead to problems with the roots. You’ll notice that the leaves will become yellow, that’s because there is not enough oxygen in the soil because it is too wet. When watering the plants, try to use water that is the same temperature as the room. This will insure that the plant doesn’t have any shock from too cold or hot water. 3. Temperature: As with watering, different plants will thrive under different conditions, one of which is the temperature. As a general rule temperatures between 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, during the day and 10-15 degrees cooler at night. Now this will not cover all plants, but this is the range for most of the house plants. Here are a few more tips to follow: The temperature can go up or down by 10 degrees from the ranges above, it will not kill the plant. Rapid changes in temperature, either colder or hotter, can cause damage to your plant. If a plant is grown at a hotter temperature than is needed, it will be small, weak. If it is grown in a too cool temperature the leaves will have a yellowish look and will fall off. 4. Pots and Containers: Make sure that you have a pot that can adequately allow the water to drain out of it. Also, before putting a plant in a pot you have used for another plant, make sure you clean it out. Just incase some disease that may effect the next plant. 5. Humidity: The level of moisture in the air can also effect how a plant grows. Low humidity, in most plants, not all, will cause dry leaves and curling. Increase the humidity of the room with a humidifier, especially during winter when the heat is on and the humidity drops. You could also spray the leaves with water, but do it in the morning, if done overnight the leaves can rot. 6. Fertilizing: Once again, this is one of those tips that is based purely on the type of plant that you have, different plants need different levels. Other factors include, how fast do you want the plant to grow, how much sunlight there is, how many times you water it, etc. As a general rule, for plants that are growing very quickly, you should fertilize every 2 to 3 months, but for dormant plants, you shouldn’t fertilize at all. Since these are indoor plants, that receive less sun than normal, you really don’t have to fertilize them too often. If you see burned or dried leaves, you can have a pretty good guess that the plant has been over fertilized.

Diagnosis

What Causes Breast Cancer? An indepth look at the some of the causes of breast cancer and options for treatment

C

ertain changes in DNA can cause normal breast cells to become cancerous. DNA is the chemical in each of our cells that makes up our genes – the instructions for how our cells work. Some inherited DNA changes can increase the risk for developing cancer and are responsible for the cancers that run in some families. But most breast cancer DNA changes happen in single breast cells during a woman's life rather than having been inherited. These are called acquired changes, and most breast cancers have several of these acquired gene mutations. But so far, the causes of most acquired mutations that could lead to breast cancer remain unknown. While we do not yet know exactly what causes breast cancer, we do know that certain risk factors are linked to the disease. A risk factor is anything that affects a person's chance of getting a disease such as cancer. Different cancers have different risk factors. Some risk factors, such as smoking, drinking, and diet are linked to things a person does. Others, like a person's 76

age, race, or family history, can't be changed. But risk factors don't tell us everything. Having a risk factor, or even several, doesn't mean that a person will get the disease. Some women who have one or more risk factors never get breast cancer. And most women who do get breast cancer don't have any risk factors. While all women are at risk for breast cancer, the factors listed below can increase a woman's chances of having the disease. Although many risk factors may increase your chance of developing breast cancer, it is not yet known exactly how some of these risk factors cause cells to become cancerous. Hormones seem to play a role in many cases of breast cancer, but just how this happens is not fully understood. Risk factors you cannot change Gender: Simply being a woman is the main risk for breast cancer. While men also get the disease, it is about 100 times more common in women than in men. Age: The chance of getting breast cancer goes up as a woman gets older. About 2 out of 3 women with invasive breast cancer are age 55 or older when the cancer is found.

images: Dawn Poland/ Sean Locke Genetic risk factors: About 5% to 10% of breast cancers are thought to be linked to inherited changes (mutations) in certain genes. The most common gene changes are those of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Women with these gene changes have up to an 80% chance of getting breast cancer during their lifetimes. Other gene changes may raise breast cancer risk as well. Family history: Breast cancer risk is higher among women whose close blood relatives have this disease. The relatives can be from either the mother's or father's side of the family. Having a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer about doubles a woman's risk. (It's important to note that 70% to 80% of women who get breast cancer do not have a family history of this disease.) Personal history of breast cancer: A woman with cancer in one breast has a greater chance of getting a new cancer in the other breast or in another part of the same breast. This is different from a return of the first cancer (which is called recurrence).

Race: White women are slightly more likely to get breast cancer than are African-American women. But African American women are more likely to die of this cancer. At least part of the reason seems to be because African-American women have faster growing tumors. Asian, Hispanic, and American Indian women have a lower risk of getting breast cancer. Dense breast tissue: Dense breast tissue means there is more glandular tissue and less fatty tissue. Women with denser breast tissue have a higher risk of breast cancer. Dense breast tissue can also make it harder for doctors to spot problems on mammograms. Menstrual periods: Women who began having periods early (before age 12) or who went through the change of life (menopause) after the age of 55 have a slightly increased risk of breast cancer. They have had more menstrual periods and as a result have been exposed to more of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Earlier breast radiation: Women who have had radiation treatment to the chest area (as treatment for another cancer) earlier in life have a greatly increased risk of breast cancer. 77

image: fanelliphotography

What Causes Breast Cancer Treatment with DES: In the past, some pregnant women were given the drug DES (diethylstilbestrol) because it was thought to lower their chances of losing the baby (miscarriage). Recent studies have shown that these women (and their daughters who were exposed to DES while in the womb), have a slightly increased risk of getting breast cancer. Breast cancer risk and lifestyle choices Not having children or having them later in life: Women who have had not had children, or who had their first child after age 30, have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. Being pregnant more than once and at an early age reduces breast cancer risk. Pregnancy reduces a woman's total number of lifetime menstrual cycles, which may be the reason for this effect. Recent use of birth control pills: Studies have found that women who are using birth control pills have a slightly greater risk of breast cancer than women who have never used them. Women who stopped using the pill more than 10 years ago do not seem to have any increased risk. It's a good idea to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of birth control pills. Postmenopausal hormone therapy (PHT): Postmenopausal hormone therapy (also known as hormone replacement therapy or HRT), has been used for many years to help relieve symptoms of menopause and to help prevent thinning of the bones (osteoporosis). There are 2 main types of PHT. For women who still have a womb (uterus), doctors generally prescribe estrogen and progesterone (known as combined PHT). Estrogen alone can increase the risk of cancer of the uterus, so proges78

terone is added to help prevent this. For women who no longer have a uterus (those who've had a hysterectomy), estrogen alone can be prescribed. This is commonly known as estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). Combined PHT: It has become clear that long-term use (several years or more) of combined PHT increases the risk of breast cancer and may increase the chances of dying of breast cancer. The breast cancer may also be found at a more advanced stage, perhaps because PHT seems to reduce the effectiveness of mammograms. Five years after stopping PHT, the breast cancer risk seems to drop back to normal. ERT: The use of estrogen alone does not seem to increase the risk of developing breast cancer much, if at all. But when used long-term (for more than 10 years), some studies have found that ERT increases the risk of ovarian and breast cancer. At this time, there are few strong reasons to use PHT, other than for short-term relief of menopausal symptoms. Because there are other factors to think about, you should talk with your doctor about the pros and cons of using PHT. If a woman and her doctor decide to try PHT for symptoms of menopause, it is usually best to use it at the lowest dose that works for her and for as short a time as possible. Not breast-feeding: Some studies have shown that breast-feeding slightly lowers breast cancer risk, especially if the breast-feeding lasts 1½ to 2 years. This could be because breast-feeding lowers a woman's total number of menstrual periods, as does pregnancy.

Alcohol: Use of alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of getting breast cancer. Women who have one drink a day have a very small increased risk. Those who have 2 to 5 drinks daily have about 1½ times the risk of women who drink no alcohol. The American Cancer Society suggests limiting the amount you drink to one drink a day. Being overweight or obese: Being overweight or obese is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer, especially for women after change of life and if the weight gain took place during adulthood. Also, the risk seems to be higher if the extra fat is in the waist area. But the link between weight and breast cancer risk is complex, and studies of fat in the diet as it relates to breast cancer risk have often given conflicting results. The American Cancer Society recommends you maintain a healthy weight throughout your life and avoid gaining too much weight. Lack of exercise: Studies show that exercise reduces breast cancer risk. The only question is how much exercise is needed. One study found that as little as 1 hour and 15 minutes to 2½ hours of brisk walking per week reduced the risk by 18%. Walking 10 hours a week reduced the risk a little more. The American Cancer Society suggests that you exercise for 45 to 60 minutes 5 or more days a week. Uncertain risk factors High fat diets: Studies of fat in the diet have not clearly shown that this is a breast cancer risk factor. Most studies found that breast cancer is less common in countries where the typical diet is low in fat. On the other hand, many studies of women in the United States have not found breast cancer risk to be linked to how much fat they ate. Researchers are still not sure how to explain this difference. More research is needed to better understand the effect of the types of fat eaten and body weight on breast cancer risk. The American Cancer Society recommends eating a healthy diet that includes 5 or more servings of vegetables and fruits each day, choosing whole grains over processed (refined) grains, and limiting the amount of processed and red meats. Antiperspirants and bras: Internet e-mail rumors have suggested that underarm antiperspirants can cause breast cancer. There is very little evidence to support this idea. Also, there is no evidence to support the idea that under wire bras cause breast cancer. Abortions: Several studies show that induced abortions do not increase the risk of breast cancer. Also, there is no evidence to show a direct link between miscarriages and breast cancer. For more detailed information, see our document, Can Having an Abortion Cause or Contribute to Breast Cancer? Breast implants: Silicone breast implants can cause scar tissue to form in the breast. But several studies have found that this does not increase breast cancer risk. If you have breast implants, you might need special x-ray pictures during mammograms.

Pollution: A lot of research is being done to learn how the environment might affect breast cancer risk. At this time, research does not show a clear link between breast cancer risk and environmental pollutants such as pesticides and PCBs. Tobacco Smoke: Most studies have found no link between active cigarette smoking and breast cancer. An issue that continues to be a focus of research is whether secondhand smoke (smoke from another person's cigarette) may increase the risk of breast cancer. But the evidence about secondhand smoke and breast cancer risk in human studies is not clear. In any case, a possible link to breast cancer is yet another reason to avoid being around secondhand smoke. Night Work: A few studies have suggested that women who work at night (nurses on the night shift, for example) have a higher risk of breast cancer. This is a fairly recent finding, and more studies are being done to look at this issue.

What's New in Breast Cancer Research? Research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer is going on in many medical centers throughout the world. Breast cancer causes and new studies Studies continue to find lifestyle factors and habits that alter breast cancer risk. Some studies are looking at the effect of exercise, weight gain or loss, and diet on breast cancer risk. We are also learning more about how genes influence breast cancer. This should happen more quickly now that the human genome has been sequenced. A large, long-term study is now going on to help find the causes of breast cancer. It is known as the Sister Study and it will follow 50,000 women whose sisters (not they themselves) have had breast cancer. Over 10 years, information will be gathered on many factors that might cause breast cancer. To find out more about the Sister Study, visit the Web site at www.sisterstudy.org. More studies are being conducted in these areas: • Chemoprevention • Gene studies • New breast cancer classifications • Tumor cells in the blood • Newer imaging tests • MRI and breast biopsy

Q&A

What is menopause? Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her period stops. It is a normal change in a woman’s body. A woman has reached menopause when she has not had a period for 12 months in a row (and there are no other causes, such as pregnancy or illness, for this change). Menopause is sometimes called, “the change of life.” Leading up to menopause, a woman’s body slowly makes less and less of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. This change often happens between the ages of 45 and 55 years old. As you near menopause, you may have symptoms from the changes your body is making. Many women wonder if these changes are normal, and many are confused about how to treat their symptoms. You will feel better by learning all you can about menopause and talking with your doctor about your health and your symptoms. If your symptoms are causing you discomfort or concern, your doctor can teach you about treatment options and help you to make wise treatment choices. What are the symptoms of menopause? Menopause affects every woman differently. Your only symptom may be your period stopping. You may have other symptoms, too. Many symptoms at this time of life are because of you getting older. But some are due to menopause. Common symptoms of menopause include: • Change in pattern of periods (can be shorter or longer, lighter or heavier, more or less time between periods) • Hot flashes (sometimes called hot flushes), night sweats (sometimes followed by a chill) • Trouble sleeping through the night (with or without night sweats) • Vaginal dryness • Mood swings, feeling crabby, crying spells (probably because of lack of sleep) • Trouble focusing, feeling mixed-up or confused • Hair loss or thinning on your head, more hair growth on your face Does menopause cause bone loss? When a woman is young, estrogen helps to keep bone strong. When estrogen levels fall at menopause, bones weaken. When bones weaken a lot, the condition is called osteoporosis. Weak bones can break more easily. How do I manage menopause? What are my options? Eating a healthy diet and exercising at menopause and beyond are 81

important to feeling your best. Most women do not need any special treatment for menopause. But some women may have menopause symptoms that need treatment. Several treatments are available. It’s a good idea to talk about the treatments with your doctor so you can choose what’s best for you. There is no one treatment that is good for all women. Sometimes menopause symptoms go away over time without treatment, but there’s no way to know when. Hormone therapy (HT) – If used properly, hormone therapy (once called hormone replacement therapy or HRT) is one way to deal with the more difficult symptoms of menopause. It’s the only therapy that is approved by the government for treating more difficult hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Hormone therapy should NOT be used solely to prevent heart or bone disease, stroke, memory loss, or Alzheimer’s disease. There are many kinds of hormone therapies so your doctor can suggest what’s best for you. As with all treatments, HT has both possible benefits and possible risks; it is important to talk about these issues with your doctor. If you decide to use HT, use the lowest dose that helps and for the shortest time needed. Check with your doctor every 6 months to see if you still need HT. For more information on HT, go to http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/women/index.htm. HT can help with menopause by: • Reducing hot flashes 10/9/08 • Treating vaginal dryness

• Slowing bone loss • Improving sleep (and thus decrease mood swings) For some women, HT may increase their chance of: • Blood clots • Heart attack • Stroke • Breast cancer • Gall bladder disease Who should NOT take HT for menopause? Women who . . . • Think they are pregnant • Have problems with vaginal bleeding • Have had certain kinds of cancers (such as breast and uterine cancer) • Have had a stroke or heart attack • Have had blood clots • Have liver disease • Have heart disease HT can also cause these side effects: • Vaginal bleeding • Bloating • Breast tenderness or swelling • Headaches • Mood changes • Nausea Be sure to see your doctor if you have any of these side effects while using HT.

Menopause and Menopause Treatments

Some women decide to take herbal or other plant-based products to help relieve hot flashes. Some of the most common ones are: • Soy. Soy contains phytoestrogens (chemicals that are like estrogen). But, there is no proof that soy–or other sources of phytoestrogens–really do make hot flashes better. And the risks of taking soy–mainly soy pills and powders–are not known. The best sources of soy are foods such as tofu, tempeh, soymilk, and soy nuts. These soy products are more likely to work on mild hot flashes. • Other sources of phytoestrogens. These include herbs such as black cohosh, wild yam, dong quai, and valerian root. Again, there is no proof that these herbs (or pills or creams containing these herbs) help with hot flashes. Products that come from plants may sound like they are safe, but there is no proof they really are. There also is no proof that they are better at helping symptoms of menopause. Make sure to discuss these types of products with your doctor before taking them. You also should tell your doctor about other medicines you are taking, since some plant products can be harmful when combined with other drugs. What about “bioidentical” hormone therapy? This term means different things to different people. It’s really hormones that are just the same as the hormones the body makes. There are several products with hormone like this that are on the market and are well-tested. But some people use this term to mean drugs that are custom-made from a doctor’s order. There is no proof that these custom-made products are better or safer than hormone therapy that’s on the market. A woman should first talk to her doctor to see what’s best for her. The goal is to exercise regularly so you can lower the risk of serious disease (such as heart disease or diabetes), and maintain a healthy weight. This usually takes at least 30 minutes of exercise (such as brisk walking) on most days of the week. How else can I help my symptoms? • Hot Flashes. Some women report that eating or drinking hot or spicy foods, alcohol, or caffeine, feeling stressed, or being in a hot place can bring on hot flashes. Try to avoid any triggers that bring on your hot flashes. Dress in layers, and keep a fan in your home or workplace. Regular exercise might also ease hot flashes, but sometimes exercise can cause a hot flash. If hot flashes continue and HT is not an option, ask your doctor about taking an antidepressant or epilepsy medicine. There is proof that these can relieve hot flashes for some women. • Vaginal Dryness. A water-based, over-the-counter vaginal lubricant (like KY® Jelly) can be helpful if sex is painful. A vaginal moisturizer (also over-the-counter) can provide lubrication and help keep needed moisture in vaginal tissues. Really bad vaginal dryness may need HT. If vaginal dryness is the only reason for considering HT, an estrogen product for the vagina is the best choice. Vaginal estrogen products (creams, tablet, ring) treat only the vagina. • Problems Sleeping. One of the best ways to get a good night’s sleep is to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity 84

What about “natural” treatments for menopause?

on most days of the week. But, don’t exercise close to bedtime. Also avoid large meals, smoking, and working right before bedtime. Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided after noon. Drinking something warm before bedtime, such as herbal tea (no caffeine) or warm milk, might help you to feel sleepy. Keep your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool, and use your bedroom only for sleeping and sex. Avoid napping during the day, and try to go to bed and get up at the same times every day. If you wake during the night and can’t get back to sleep, get up and read until you’re sleepy. Don’t just lie there. If hot flashes are the cause of sleep problems, treating the hot flashes will usually improve sleep. Women who had mood swings (PMS) before their periods or post-partum depression after giving birth may have more mood swings around menopause. These are women who are sensitive to hormone changes. Often the mood swings will go away with time. If a woman is using HT for hot flashes or another menopause symptom, sometimes her mood swings will get better, too. Also, getting enough sleep and staying physically active will help you to feel your best. Mood swings are not the same as depression. • Memory problems. As people age, their memory is not as good as it once was. Some women say they have “fuzzy thinking” as they reach menopause. This may be caused by changing hormones and can improve over time. Getting enough sleep and keeping physically active can help. If memory problems are really bad, talk to your doctor right away. This is not caused by menopause. Sometimes, younger women need a hysterectomy to treat health problems such as endometriosis or cancer. A hysterectomy is an operation to remove a woman’s uterus (womb). Often one or both ovaries (the female organs that produce eggs and hormones) are removed at the same time the hysterectomy is done. If you haven’t reached menopause, a hysterectomy will stop your period. But, you will reach menopause only if both ovaries are removed, called surgical menopause. Because surgical menopause is instant menopause, it can cause more severe symptoms than natural menopause (menopause that occurs as part of the natural aging process). You should talk with your doctor about how to best manage these symptoms. Women who have a hysterectomy but have their ovaries left in place will not reach menopause at the time of surgery because their ovaries will continue to make hormones. But, because the uterus is removed, they will no longer have their periods and they cannot become pregnant. Later on, they might reach natural menopause a year or two earlier than expected.

What is premature menopause? Menopause is called “premature” if it happens at or before the age of 40–whether it is natural or brought on by medical means (induced). Some women have premature menopause because of: • Family history (genes) • Medical treatments, such as surgery to remove the ovaries • Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation to the pelvic area that damage the ovaries–although menopause does not always occur Having premature menopause puts a woman at more risk for osteoporosis later in her life. For women who want to have children, premature menopause can be a source of great distress. Women who still want to become pregnant can talk with their doctors about other ways of having children, such as donor egg programs or adoption. What is postmenopause? Postmenopause is the term for all the years beyond menopause. It begins after you have not had a period for 12 months in a row–whether your menopause was natural or medically induced.

Combat that Cold! Relief is just over the counter By Angela Forsyth

If you’re like most adults, you’re likely to get a cold 2 to 4 times a year. The common cold is a very contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract – your nose and throat. The effects can last 1 or 2 weeks. Symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, cough, itchy or sore throat, congestion, and sneezing. You can avoid getting a cold by getting plenty of rest and exercise, but once you have a cold there are ways to get relief while your body fights off the virus.

Expectorants If you’re dealing with chest congestion, taking an expectorant helps loosen the mucus blocking the airways. This makes coughs more productive and helps you breathe easier.

Over the Counter Treatment With so many over the counter medications it’s understandable for a consumer to feel overwhelmed by all the choices. It’s important to identify your symptoms before you buy and choose a medicine that addresses only those symptoms. Buying the wrong medication can leave you worse off than before.

Antihistamines Histamine is a chemical that is released by your nose and sinuses when prompted by a cold, leading to watery eyes and an itchy nose. Antihistamines block this chemical, preventing sneezing and a runny nose.

Many OTC medicines contain the same ingredients as other OTC or prescription medicines like, for example, the ingredient acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is an active ingredient for pain relief that is found in many medications. Someone who doesn’t properly read the labels could go over their maximum daily dose of acetaminophen by taking different medications for headache, congestion, and allergies. Make sure to check the “Drug Interactions Precautions” and “Warnings” sections to ensure you use the product safely. Be aware of the ingredients in the cold medicine you chose and when in doubt ask the pharmacist for help. 86

Decongestants These drugs open up nasal passages and help relieve a stuffy nose or sinus pressure. A decongestant will narrow the blood vessels inside the lining of the nose. The result is less blood flows through the nasal area and swollen tissue inside the nose shrinks.

Cough suppressants Coughing is your body’s way of expelling mucus and foreign substances. Coughs are often useful and necessary, but sometimes coughing can keep you from getting a full night’s sleep. In those cases there are a few options you can try. The Mayo Clinic supports the time-honored way of controlling a cough – drinking honey mixed with tea or hot lemon water. If that doesn’t work and you’re looking for something stronger to combat a hacking cough you can purchase a cough suppressant that will relieve your cough by blocking the cough reflex. Also available are throat sprays and lozenges that can help temporarily relieve the pain of a sore throat.

A Bug that can Bug You Anywhere By Gary Burris

Kathy Westberg wasn’t too concerned when she got a tiny bug bite on right her leg during a trip to Hawaii. But when the tiny break in the skin wouldn’t heal and started to show signs of a serious infection, the mother of four knew something was very wrong. What she didn’t know was that MRSA was about ready to turn her world upside down. By the time Westberg arrived back in her home state of Oregon, the infection had become so severe that she had a problem even standing. “I couldn’t walk,” said Westberg. “It was just a constant burning. I felt like my leg was on fire.” MRSA, which stands for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus, is a highly contagious and aggressive form of staph bacteria that has moved rapidly, over the last few years, into the general public. The superbug is resistant to the antibiotics that have been prescribed for decades to prevent infection. The Centers for Disease Control announced last year that over 60% of infections seen in emergency rooms are MRSA related. What concerns Dr. J. Mark Christensen, a researcher and associate professor at Oregon State University, is how easily women can come in contact with the MRSA. “Women are certainly vulnerable in their normal routines because the bug is prevalent everywhere,” said Christensen. The tiniest break in the skin is enough for MRSA to sneak inside a woman’s body to set up shop and cause some real damage. In particular, he said, women who have their nails done should be extra cautious. “Red flags go up all over the place when I think of women getting their nails done,” explained Christensen. “The likelihood of getting an infection jumps like you can’t believe if certain precautions aren’t taken.” Those precautions include thoroughly washing your hands beforehand with warm, soapy water and, if you get a break in the skin, applying an over-the-counter ointment or gel that clearly states on the tube that it kills MRSA. 88

Staphaseptic is one such product that has been shown to kill 99.9% of MRSA, said Christensen. He also pointed out the challenges related to popular micro-dermabrasion techniques women use on their faces. “Gentle, gentle, gentle is what I always say,” explained Christensen. “If you get too aggressive you can cause friction, which heats the skin up. That can cause a break in the skin’s surface—a perfect entry point for MRSA bacteria to enter the body.” What about one of the most common tasks of a woman’s daily hygiene routine: shaving legs? "You want to make sure you wash the area very well before shaving,” urged Christensen. “Use a nice lubricating foam or gel so that the blade can slide across the skin well. Anytime you get a nick or cut you should worry about infection. That means you need to treat the area afterwards by washing the area and treat it with a MRSA killing antiinfective. With the prevalence of MRSA, the infection is more than likely to be MRSA than any other.” For Westberg, information about MRSA was nearly nonexistent when she got her infection. She had no clue as to what was causing her so much pain and made it so she couldn’t walk. Her doctor immediately put her on a very powerful antibiotic IV infusion. Within a week after the infusion, she was mostly healed. Still, Westberg said that, although she now knows what to do to help prevent a MRSA outbreak, she wishes she would’ve known about prevention techniques, and specifically Staphaseptic, before the potentially deadly infection set in. “I use it religiously,” said Westberg in reference to Staphaseptic. “And I use it on my kids.” Christensen explained that using the new product in place of popular antibiotic ointments that have been used for decades makes sense. The antibiotic ointments that line drug store shelves contain the same types of antibiotics that MRSA has grown resistant to.

Learn How to Stop Smoking

Learn how to stop smoking with a quit smoking action plan.

N

icotine addiction causes your brain to link everyday habits with smoking. So to quit smoking you're actually fighting a battle on two fronts — physical and habitual. Understanding both is key to changing your behavior, making healthier choices and starting a new life as a non-smoker. First you need to choose a quitting method that best matches your personal nicotine dependence and smoking habits. The next step is to prepare before you quit. Quitting is a process, not an event. Being ready — physically and emotionally — before you smoke your last cigarette will help you stay on track when the going gets rough. Finally, build a quitting plan is a stop smoking action plan that will help you manage your unique cravings and triggers.

and smoking habits. If you have had a difficult time trying to quit in the past, studies show you should consider trying an assisted quit method. More on cold turkey quitting, managing cravings and understanding triggers.

Assisted Quitting Therapeutic Nicotine & counseling According to the Surgeon General, an effective way to quit smoking is with a combination of counseling and medications such as Therapeutic Nicotine. Therapeutic Nicotine is available over the counter in patch, gum or lozenge form. Group treatment and/or counseling

After your last smoke it's time to substitute new, healthy behaviors for smoking. You'll have to be ready for cravings. We'll help you understand what to expect from Day One forward.

Many people find the support and encouragement of counseling or group treatment helpful. Counseling can help smokers identify and overcome situations that trigger the urge to smoke. Research shows the success rates for all quit methods are higher when coupled with ready access to support. For help with your quitting effort, consider selecting a program that is at least four to eight weeks in length. The programs that work best provide plenty of encouragement and weekly one-on-one meetings with a counselor.

Choose the quitting method that fits you best.

Prescription medications

Quitting is different for everyone because no two smokers' habits or cravings are alike. The closer you match your quit method to your level of nicotine dependence and personal smoking habits, the better your chances of success. Here are the most popular methods to consider.

Smoking cessation prescription medications are clinically proven to help smokers. For more information on these products and potential side effects, consult your doctor.

How Pets Can Lift Your Psyche

T

he warmth of a dog’s greeting when you come home from work. The way a cat curls up at your feet and purrs in delight. These may be frivolous sweet nothings to many people, but there has been documented evidence that these sweet purrings may actually lift up your spirit. Dogs, for one, don’t hide their feelings. Have you ever met a dog that was manipulative or schematic? They hang their tongues out when they’re happy and they aim to please. They basically consider you their “king.” Such groveling behavior is enough to flatter the most diehard of narcissists. If dogs every do something guilty or wrong, they’ll just look at you with melting eyes and beg for forgiveness. If you’re happy, they join in the celebration. If you’re sad, they’ll do anything to make you happy. It’s been shown: unconditional love leads to happiness. Also, dog owners are prone to getting more exercise, and 92

exercise triggers adrenaline that can make you happier. Having a pet contributes to your growth and well being: you feel like you are actually caring for something, and your love for the creature begins to grow. People will pay a high price for love. This applies especially to folks in homes, or invalids who want affection from everyone to heal. Pets offer this affection, unconditionally and lovingly. Having a pet also cements relationships with other people. Pets and Senior Citizens Mary Miller, a retired schoolteacher from Arizona loves Nick, her 3 year old Springer spaniel. “Nick has brought a lot of love into my life,” she says. And her husband isn’t a bit jealous, either! “Having Nick around has definitely livened up our home life,” says Ed, her husband, a retired 66 year old electrician.

image: Ivan Mateev “Pets are an important form of social contact,” says Dr. Alan Beck, director, director of the Center for HumanAnimal Bond at the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University. “For older people who may be less mobile and who have few or limited companions, animals provide family and friendship, something to care for and to be recognized by.” We all have a basic need to nurture something or someone. This basic need to love and care for something does not stop when your kids have flown the coop. The best thing about pets is no matter how old they become, they will always need this nurturing that instills a sense of joy in you, no matter how old you may be. Longevity Some studies have shown that pet ownership has demonstrated increased chances of survival after heart

attacks or reducing blood pressure. There is also evidence to suggest that pets can sometimes help people with Alzheimer’s. Dr. Lynette Hart, associate professor at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says, ““Studies have shown that Alzheimer's patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is an animal in the home. Caregivers also feel less burdened when there is a pet, particularly if it is a cat, which generally requires less care than a dog.” Also, people who have pets in their homes are generally less apt to have mood disorders than people who don’t. Stress Pets have demonstrated the ability to reduce stress in patients. Dr. Judith M. Siegel, professor of public health at UCLA has observed that seniors who have pets were 93

How Pets Can Lift Your Psyche

able to better cope with stress without having to enter the healthcare system. In a study that she conducted, Siegel surveyed about 1,000 older adult Medicare patients. She found that those who owned pets appeared less distressed than those who didn’t have one. But of course pets are not a cure all. No furry creature can possibly be a “cure” for hypertension, for example. But they can certainly abate the level of distress. Think of them as “emotional vitamins” that can help you make it through the day without blowing a fuse. The 65plus population, particularly vulnerable to loneliness and stress-related diseases, can reap enormous benefits from pet companionship. Cats have been helpful with stress too. When Jerry Geider was out of work, he spent three months polishing his resume and hunting for a job. “I spent a lot of time going on job interviews and sending out resumes, with nothing panning out,” the Seattle resident recalls. “Some days, the only thing that kept me smiling was my dog licking my face and wagging his tail. And often that was just what it took to put me in a positive frame-of-mind before an interview.” Many pet owners have said the same thing: when you’re depressed and stressed, watching and playing with a pet can work wonders for the soul. Whether it’s a hamster, a dog, a guinea pig, a kitten or a rabbit, there’s something about pets that can stamp a smile on the most dour face.

Conquering Loneliness Human beings need TLC to feel loved and wanted. Dr. Beck says “A pet is someone to share your life with,” he says. “There are a lot of people in this world who live alone. As a society, many of us live in apartments in big cities. We may not know our neighbors. We may be separated geographically from our extended families. Maybe we’re divorced or widowed and live alone. And so for people in these circumstances, pets can help fill the ‘people void’ in their lives.” Psychologist Judith Siegel, a professor of public health at UCLA, conducted a study in 1999 study that showed how pets helped one group of people living with AIDS less depressed. The male AIDS patients how had a pet were 300 % less likely to get depressed than those who did not. “Pet ownership among men who have AIDS provides a certain level of companionship that helps them cope better with the stresses of their lives,” Siegel says. The Bottom Line Owning pets may not feel the same as having children, but if someone you know is ill, lonely, or depressed, consider a pet for them (even temporarily). Some pets are high maintenance, but yours doesn’t have to be. Remember, unconditional love is what it’s all about!

Warm Weather in the Winter: Two Caribbean Travel Gems The best time to get out of the country and set sail to the warmer clime zones is the winter. Let’s face it, over 50% of the year, you are under blankets or living in close proximity to a space heater and wrapped up in sweatshirts and cashmere. But why suffer in silence when the sands of the Caribbean are calling? Here, we give you two stylish and affordable exotic locations that you can travel happily to in the winter.

Barbados An English colony, this island is a coral lover’s paradise. The island itself was pushed out of the ocean by volcanic activity. On the leeward side (the west coast), there are coral shore beaches composed of fine white sand all around. Therefore, if you are a scuba diver or snorkeling lover, you will revel in the beauty of the Barbados beaches. The windward side (east coast) is much rougher. There is a strong breeze because of the constant trade winds and waves pounding against a very rocky shore. But it is precisely these trade winds that give the island a very tropical and mild climate. Among these beaches and coral reefs are several caves and hills and gullies; so topographically, this is a very interesting island, and filled with beautiful flora and fauna. The drinking water is among the purest in the world because of the underground lakes. Why Go? The Barbadians (also called “Bajans”) are very friendly and there is a very vibrant nightlife. If you’re into flora and 96

fauna, this is definitely a top spot to consider. There is an enormous hothouse of orchids, and there are caves where you can take tours and go spelunking. There are beautiful beaches both on the windward and the leeward sides. One of the most popular places on the east coast is the Crane Beach Resort, which has naturally pink sand. Things to Do • See the Jacobean and Georgian buildings that were built with coral and ships’ ballast • Take in the wooden chattel houses trimmed with gingerbread fretwork • Visit Bridgetown, the capital, and shop and take in the culture of the island • Go to Sam Lord’s Castle, which is a beautiful Georgian mansion built in 1820 by notorious buccaneer Samuel Hall Lord • Go and see Harrison’s Cave, one of the 7 wonders of Barbados. This cave will take your breath away. It is filled with underground pools, beautiful natural slits of light, and full of stalactites and stalagmites. Where To Stay? • If you like ancient architecture, stay at the Savannah Hotel which was built in the mid 1700's (Phone: 800 868 9429; reservations@gemsbarbados.com) • Stay in a cozy guesthouse, which won’t cost a lot but will make you feel as though you’re in your own home. A place like Alexandria Guesthouse and Cottage will

not set you back more than $35 per night for a standard double. You can’t beat those prices! (www.barbados.org/gstraste.htm) • There are some good value hotels like the Allamanda Beach hotel or the Amaryllis Beach Resort. Find out what prices fit your budget at the options on www.barbados.org

Aruba Paradise to several regulars, this island is a desert that gets virtually no more than 12 inches of rainfall each year. It is no more than ten plus miles off the coast of Venezuela and is very shielded from the ravages of the hurricane. Therefore, expect to get consistently sunny weather (think 80 degrees). Getting to Aruba is also very easy from the east coast. There are direct flights that take no more than four hours from major metropolises like Boston and New York. Why Go? Aruba is a Dutch colony, and the local language is called Papiamento. Many visitors have remarked that the island’s colorful nature, brilliant beaches and warmth of its inhabitants are some of the key qualities that make people come back time and again. The island has a strong educational system and has one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean. Things to Do • Go and relax on Eagle Beach, which is arguably the best and most pristine beach on the island, and studded

with the signature “divi” trees. • Aruba is famous for its aloe, so make sure you visit the aloe production factory. • There are beautiful caves on the windward side of the island that have tons of stalactites and stalagmites. These are perfect for the archaeology buff. The Huliba Cave is known as the Tunnel of Love because of the heart shaped opening at the entrance. • There is a hot water “Natural Pool” on the windward side that is made from a unique formation of rock. • There are stretches of rolling white sand dunes that mark a start contrast to Aruba’s desert like texture. You can explore the dunes on foot. • Explore the historic gold mills, the California lighthouse, or the Ostrich and Butterfly Farms. Where to Stay? There are so many accommodation options in Aruba, from high-rise hotels to guest houses and rentals. You can find the perfect accommodation to suit every budget. Great and inexpensive options include: • Bucuti Beach Resort: this is located on Eagle Beach and is a perfect spot for honeymoons and romantic getaways. (www.bucuti.com.) • Aruba Rental Homes offer villas to rent on a weekly or monthly basis. These apartments are great bang for the buck and very conveniently located! (www.arubarentalhomes.com) 97

life There was once an era when Daytime TV’s primary audience was the apron-clad, ambitious mother, and the bubbly teenager waiting for school to start. But ever since the advent of flexible work hours and professions, the demographic glued to Daytime’s various soaps is almost as varied as prime time’s demographic. People as diverse as businesswomen to personal trainers are hooked to Days of Our Lives and General Hospital. But while the demographic has changed, the ratings for Daytime have dropped. Popular Daytime soaps average about 2 million to over 5 million viewers a week—and the audience numbers have been plummeting since the 1970s. Compare that with Primetime TV’s Lost, which even in its lowest ratings, garnered 12.8 million viewers. Or the enormously popular that averaged around 24 million viewers in its last season, a 31% increase from its previous season. Office water cooler talk is rife with debates on Lost, Grey’s Anatomy and CSI. Fewer fans wrangle over the love triangles of Passions and The Young and the Restless. With the morning still devoted to a day job for many, Daytime TV’s soaps often become less of a staple viewing than their evening counterparts. The media feeds the burning Primetime frenzy too. If you pick up the latest tabloids, chances are you’ll see many pages full of stars from shows as varied as The Hills to Ugly Betty. Surely, one could argue that in this day of flexible work hours and professions, Daytime TV soaps should have more viewers than when they were initially aired? One thing is for certain: it’s not for lack of talent.

It’s Harder Than it Looks For some actors and actresses, Daytime TV is a tougher gig. “We don’t have the luxury to retake scenes,” says Michelle Ray Smith, who plays Ava Peralta in Guiding Light. “We do the scenes in one take…they look for actors who are well seasoned.” That’s definitely the case when you’re shooting 250 98

episodes for the year compared to, say, 24. There aren’t enough hours in the day to do retakes, or to have layers of complex plots and scenes as is typically done in Primetime. Character building is important in the morning shows, but in Primetime, the clock is ticking at a supersonic speed that sometimes character development is sacrificed at the expense of plot. Guiding Light has earned its place in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the longest running soap opera in production. The 15,000th televised episode aired on Sept. 7th, 2006. Daytime diehards are used to these types of marathon sessions. All My Children, for example, has had such popularity that at one time it was the most widely recorded show in the United States. And at one point, 30% of its viewers were male. You have to wonder how a soap manages to attract viewers to stay hooked for that long a period. Both talent and plot have to be superb.

Seamless Adaptation: Making the Leap from Daytime to Primetime The acting techniques are different for both times of the day, and not every TV star has the talent to play one or the other. Some have transitioned beautifully, like Hayden Panetierre, who starred in One Life to Live and as the child Lizzie Spaulding in Guiding Light from 1996-2000. She now stars in the Primetime hit, Heroes. Panetierre is an example of an actress who genuinely loves drama, hence the leap from Daytime to Primetime was a good fit for her. “People look at me as sweet sometime,” she says about her Heroes character, Claire Bennett. “I say, I would never in a million years describe myself as sweet, never. But I think it would be a blast. I think it's more fun to be bad. At least I have a chance - at least I could play and pretend to be bad on the screen." Josh Duhamel won a Best Supporting Actor Emmy in 1999 for his portrayal of Leo du Pres, a manipulative but charming schemer, on All My Children. He landed his primetime role on NBC’s Las Vegas in 2003, and has also landed parts in Crossing Jordan, and the movies Win a Date with

Ted Hamilton and Transformers. The sultry Demi Moore played Jackie Templeton in relatively unknown General Hospital episodes from 1982-1983. One difference in the way episodes are produced in Primetime is that the location and plots are constantly changing. “Primetime stars film everywhere,” says Leven Rambin, who plays Ava Benton in All My Children. “They see different people, places. In Daytime, you can do the same scene every day. It’s a lot more predictable with the storyline. In Primetime, the story is always changing.” The fast-pace, special effects, complex plotlines and constantly changing characters give Primetime the look and feel of an action flick. “My acting is more intimate and natural, which works well for Daytime,” says Michelle Ray Smith. “You definitely need to make some adjustment to switch to Primetime…you need to be more dramatic.” Considering you compress 250 hours of Daytime material into 20 some episodes (for Primetime), being dramatic and fast paced comes with the category. The reason for lightning speed drama is to curb rating declines, but sometimes a connection isn’t built between the character and the audience as well as it is in Daytime Television.

Constant Metamorphosis The name of the game is to keep up with the audience’s demands, from product placements, fashion, pacing, char-

acters, plot and drama. Surprisingly enough, a huge fan base for Daytime soaps exists in the 14-30 age group – the demographic that could arguably be the hardest to please because of their constantly evolving tastes. And Sex & The City isn’t the only show where you can get fashion advice. Says Michelle Ray Smith, “My character (Ava) has the coolest clothes each season. The clothes rock on the show! As a result a lot of younger women watch the show and I’ve received a lot of fan mail about my clothes.” One could argue that the future of Daytime TV needs to be more in tune with the needs of the fast-paced audience. With the age of TIVO and Digital Video Recorders, audiences have more ways to watch their favorite TV shows no matter when they air. For Daytime celebrities to become as popular as their Primetime counterparts, producers need to encourage and promote innovation and character complexity. Risk taking is a big part of television. Michelle Ray Smith says that Guiding Light has seen a lot more innovation and risk taking of late, which is a step in the right direction. There are many ways to make Daytime TV sexy and appealing to the finicky audience. Stars like Rambin, Ray Smith and Panetierre are good indicators that perhaps in due time, the morning soaps will have as many viewers as the evening shows. Daytime fans, we hope you’re listening

Adventure

E

veryone needs a little thrill now and then, but you don't have to blow your budget to have fun. Getting away for just a day is the latest trend in vacations. You can stay close to home and make use of the weekend to rejuvenate and get away. I'm Roni Taylor, your expert adventure guide and host of the new television show, Getaway for a Day. On my show, I experience all sorts of adventure but even in the blazing sun I still want to look good. Although I will gladly wear the harness, helmets, and gloves for our adventures, the one thing I can't leave at home is my heels. That's right, whenever I can get away with it I'll wear them. I'll even sky dive in high heels... if they'll let me! You know, you CAN enjoy a great outdoor adventure and still look great doing it. I love living in Las Vegas. And just outside the glitz and glamour of the city lights there is a whole different kind of fun to be had – outdoors. I recently took a high speed spin in a radical race car, which had my head whipping around like a rag doll. But my most heart pounding experience was slicing through the air in a canyon on a zip line. A drop of 150 feet will really get your heart racing and when you realize your hanging from a single rope, the only thing you want is to get to the other side as soon as possible. Fortunately I had a great guide who took me out and after watching everyone else make it across whole and alive I ended up doing the zipline four times. What a thrilling experience once you relax into it! Besides the heels there are other things that I simply can't 100

do without. On this trip being that we were in St. George Utah in the summer, heat and sunburn were a factor. Because I am naturally pale, when I go into the sun I have to protect my skin as much as possibly. Besides that, I need to look like I don't hide under a rock for the rest of the year. So I absolutely love L'Oreal Sublime Bronze self tanning lotion. It gives me a very natural bronze glow that also shimmers in the sun. On camera this gives me the most natural looking tan without having to go to the tanning bed before an outdoor shoot. Physicians Formula makes a great brush on bronzer that I use after the lotion. It looks so natural and is great for my skin as well. Last and one of the most important must haves is Certain Dry deodorant. Let's face it, you want to watch the show host take on some pretty difficult adventures but what you don't want to see is her sweat. With Certain Dry I never have to worry and check for perspiration before the camera rolls. You'll find my high heeled outdoor explorations of adventure featured here in the Travel section of Beauty Guide. Visit my web site at www.getawayforaday.tv to share with me where you like to go for a quick getaway. Maybe you'll catch me visiting one of your favorite places in a new episode. On my next getaway I'll be canyoneering through Utah's Narrows. Canyoneering is a rock climber's dream, using rope and hooks as a method to walk, scramble, scale, and climb canyons. To find out what else I'm up to, log onto www.Getawayforaday.tv and watch the show online, read my blog, or click the programming link on the Getaway for a Day Web site to find out what station the show is aired in your area.

Hollywood’s Golden Girl Armed with an arresting smile and gorgeous looks, Kate Garry Hudson was born on April 19, 1979 to actress Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson. Ever since she leapt to fame in the movie, Almost Famous, Kate has been everywhere. From starring in box office hits like, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days to The Skeleton Key, Kate stars in roles that inevitably portray her as the “good girl next door,” who has passion for what she does while remaining drop-dead gorgeous. Kate is now a fixture on several magazine covers following her meteoric rise to fame since Almost Famous in 2000 where she plays free-spirited rock and roll loving chick, “Penny Lane.” The role earned her an Oscar nomination and made here a highly coveted item for romantic comedies like You, Me & Dupree and the recent Fool’s Gold with Matthew McConaughy. A Multi-faceted Personality She’s not always the sweet golden girl next door. Kate is a perfectionist, and she’s fearless. Her current projects include filming Bride Wars with co-star Anne Hathaway; Nine, a musical-to-film role in which she’s cast along Daniel Day Lewis and Oscar winners Marillon Cotillard (from La View En Rose) and Dame Judi Dench; and Big Eyes, in which she plays painter Margaret Keane. These highly different roles give you a good idea of what her capabilities are as an actress. It’s so easy to pin her down into a stereotypical film like, My Best Friend’s Girl, but her recent roles suggest that she’s eager to broaden her repertoire. When you consider 102

how musically talented she is, it’s no surprised that she was cast in Nine. Kate can play the guitar and the piano, and she also writes music. Her favorite musicians include The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. Recently, her foray into the beauty world has led her to promote David Babaii for WildAid, a paraben-free, sulfatefree and petroleum-free haircare line. “We need to start paying attention to how we’re harming ourselves and the environment,” she says. As a stylish trend setter, Kate is always on People Magazine’s ‘Best Dressed List’ and ‘Most Beautiful People’ List. Single and Loving It

Best Actress at the MTV Movie Awards and a Teen Choice Award nomination. But many critics feel that she has a lot more to offer and ends up playing in similar roles time and again. Almost Famous was her first phenomenal success, and many Hollywood critics were touting her as the next big thing. The movie also gave Hudson an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win for Best Actress. Despite all the hubbub that came with the win, she remained very humble about her upbringing and her parents. “I laugh when people go on about the advantages I have - my mother’s main influence has come from just being a great parent.”

Ever since she was a kid, Kate was a sponge on Hollywood movie sets, absorbing everything that went on. “I grew up on movie sets and had a blast,” she says.

Kate Hudson was married to Black Crowes performer Chris Robinson in 2007. She had a son with him, Ryder, who is now four years old. Ryder is the most important thing in Hudson’s current life. “I’d much rather look after him (Ryder) than go out drinking and dancing,” she has said. “Am I going to look back and say, ‘God, I wish I could have gone to that concert?’ I’d rather be listening to my son sing songs. I’d rather be watching him sleep.” A fiercely protective parent, she has said that it should be illegal for paparazzi to photograph kids without prior consent of the parent. Since her divorce, Kate has been linked to several men, including Owen Wilson and Lance Armstrong. “Divorcing Chris Robinson was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she has said. Her relationship with Robinson has actually continued to improve after the legal separation and the two are really good friends now.

As a couple, Kate describes their life as having been really “boring.” “We used to read poetry to each other at home,” she says. She continues to be shocked that the paparazzi follow her around since she considers her life quite uneventful. The Best Acting Years To Come? Kate turned down the role of Mary Jane Watson in Spider Man and instead accepted the part of Ethne Eustace in The Four Feathers (2002) which disappointed box office critics. Her next performance as Andie in How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days was a blockbuster in the theatres, garnering $20 million in the opening weekend. The movie also garnered several nominations and awards, including a win for Kate as

Ever since she was a kid, Kate was a sponge on Hollywood movie sets, absorbing everything that went on. “I grew up on movie sets and had a blast,” she says.

Critics say that Kate lit up every scene that she walked through, in Almost Famous. But oddly enough, that movie became the pinnacle of her career, and even though she starred in several popular films since then, she has yet to top that role. Kate is aware of the traditional romantic roles she’s been playing. She has said she would do anything to land a challenging role including strip naked on the set. The musical Nine could very well be her hit movie since Almost Famous. The role was created just for her, where she plays Vogue magazine writer Stephanie. Film director Rob Marshall says, “Her revelatory skills as a singer and dancer lead to the creation of the role,” (the original Broadway musical did not include this role). Composer Maury Yeston also wrote a special song just for Kate, called “Cinema Italiano.” The story is about a world famous Italian film director played by Daniel Day Lewis, who directs his latest picture while also balancing the numerous women in his life; Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson. The role may well be a natural for Kate, since her mom Goldie Hawn was a go-go dancer on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. The film is scheduled to come out sometime in 2009. Will it be her chance for another shot at the Oscar? It’s too early to tell, but there’s no doubt that this firecracker who can sing, play the guitar, dance and act has more “challenging” roles up her sleeve. Nine may well be the movie to rocket her to even greater levels.

Your 401-k In Turbulent Times T

hese are turbulent times for the finance industry, and your 401-k is probably the first thing on your mind, especially if you’re planning on retiring in a few years. It’s natural to be flustered and worried, but taking your 401-k out at this point really isn’t the smartest strategy. As of October 2008, Congress’ top budget analyst estimated that Americans’ retirement plans had shaved off $2 trillion over the past year. Ouch! Here’s what the experts are saying: • Historically, the stock market doesn’t really stay down for more than two years, so if you have a couple more years left till you retire, either decide to rebalance your portfolio, or let it be. • How does one rebalance a portfolio? There are several ways. One of them is by taking some money out of bonds and putting them into beaten down stocks. You should ask your financial advisor what is best for you. 104

• If you have investments in money market funds right now, you may want to consider rebalancing your portfolio by taking the money out (money market funds are likely to get weaker) and putting them into individual stocks or go all cash. • Remember that if all hell is breaking loose, it’s too late to cash out of your stocks. You should have done this before the panic. If you’re still holding onto your 401-k portfolio, let it be. • However, not a bad idea to change your investment strategy going forward. Remember to let your previous bad investments be… they will recover in the future. • If you are completely risk averse now and skeptical of recovery any time soon, then consider moving your portfolio into treasury funds. These funds don’t return too much, but they are safe, considering they are government investments. So you’re not going to get 10-20% return any time soon, but you won’t suffer any losses either.

Now is the Time to Rescue Your 401-k, not Flee From It

Free Money = Smart Money

Should you stop contributing to your 401-k now? Absolutely not. But it certainly is a time to think about rebalancing your portfolio.

Is there such a thing called free money? Yes. This is called the employer’s matching program in your 401-k portfolio. You should take advantage of it, now more than ever. So why would you even consider stopping your 401-k contributions?

Many pundits proclaim the worst of the market worries is yet to come. Does that make you feel panicked? It should! However, selling all your stocks right now is the worst possible decision. Think about realigning your portfolio and taking money out of the money market funds and putting it into treasuries or bonds if you are risk averse. This is particularly necessary if retirement is only a few years away for you. The Way To Win is to Buy Cheap Time will tell you, again and again, that the winners buy cheap stocks, and particularly at the times when the market is panicking. This means that the pros are buying now. So, if you have a lot of bond funds, you may want to consider moving a portion of your bond money into stocks.

Also, there is a tax deduction component (all your 401-k contributions are pre tax). So, say you contribute $200 and your boss contributes 50% of that, you get $100 in free money. Your $200 really means that you’re giving away $150 net (because of the tax deductions), so you literally got $150 in free money. The Bottom Dollar? If you’re retiring soon, you need to be as conservative as possible in your allocations. There’s no telling that the worst of the market is over. However, if they are only paper losses and you’re young, stick with it! Stay the course and most of your investments are likely to recover. If you dump your stocks now, you’re doing it too late…if the market starts to turn around, you’ll wish you had not sold. 105

Happiness and Your Health

I

t’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life and lose sight of what makes you happy. Really happy. But making sure your happiness meter is giving optimal readings can provide many important health benefits.

But ask a roomful of people what makes them happy and you’re likely to get a wide range of responses, from “watching the sunset” or “spending time with good friends” to “finding a great shoe sale” or “winning the office football pool.”

Happy people have younger hearts, younger arteries, and a younger RealAge. Happy people recover more quickly from surgery, cope better with pain, have lower blood pressure, and have longer life expectancy than unhappy people.

Defining happiness is no simple feat

Studies also suggest that happy people may have stronger immune systems—they’re less likely to get colds and flu viruses. And when they do, their symptoms tend to be mild. Not surprisingly, happy people are better at looking after their health, too. When people’s happiness levels improve, so do their health behaviors. They exercise more, wear sunscreen, and go for regular checkups. How to get there So everyone wants to be happy, and the benefits are clearly plentiful. But researchers have discovered that people aren’t always great at predicting what will make them happy. If it’s long-term happiness you’re after, you may need to learn a few new tricks. Take the time to read this Article on the latest happiness research and find out whether you’re doing all you can for a healthier, younger, happier you. What is happiness? We all know when we’re happy and when we’re not. 108

In an effort to help narrow the definition, researchers have devised a series of questionnaires to measure life satisfaction, positive mood, and subjective well-being. Some scientists are even beginning to use brain imaging to better understand the physiology of happiness. And economists have jumped on the happiness bandwagon, too, hoping to calculate the value of happiness within a sociopolitical context. So what have they discovered? What makes for a happy life? It’s only partly your genes Although your level of happiness is not entirely predetermined by your genes, genes do play a part, just as they play a part in your general health. Some researchers estimate that as much as 40% to 50% of a person’s capacity for happiness may be genetically predetermined. And although that means some lucky people may start off with a greater propensity for happiness, it’s no guarantee they’ll lead a charmed life. Fortunately, evidence suggests that even the gloomiest of us can learn to be happier. And learn we must. Left to our own devices, we tend to focus our energies on things that will give us the greatest instant pleasure. Even when we know better.
