KHUNYING PORNTHIP ROJANASUNAND 16

BANGKOK'S FORENSIC FASHIONISTA!

CSI couldn’t create a more colourful character but don’t let her sassy style throw you of the track, she’s no stranger to rolling up her designer sleeves and dealing with death scenes, dodgy politicians and angry police generals. Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand MD is debriefed by Bed Sheets on her unique style and favourite Bangkok haunts. We love your style! Where do you get your influences from? When I was nine years old I subscribed to ‘Glamour' Magazine and ‘National Geographic’, so from an early age both fashion and science had a big impact on my life. Although I must confess that I am more drawn to Western styles, so I tend to mix and match with Thai and Western designers. At the moment I am really inspired by Jean Paul Gaultier’s designs. My favourite Thai designer is Fly Now but obviously I can’t wear their designs in the daytime so I usually wear clothes by Cop Copi when I’m working. What about music? Well, when I was young I was a big Tom Jones fan. Nowadays I still listen to music but I’m not that familiar with the singers’ names. I’m not that taken with Lady Gaga, she’s so ‘look at me’ but her voice doesn’t stand up to her image. When was the last time you danced? Last year, at Thongchai ‘Bird’ McIntyre’s concert. I love dancing; it doesn’t depend on the time, the place or alcohol, for me its all about the rhythm. I can dance anytime if the rhythm is good. My first inspiration for dancing was Madonna and Janet Jackson. If I had more time I’d love to study dancing but maybe I am quite limited now because of my age. (laughs)

Where’s your favourite place to unwind in Bangkok? Even though I look like I dress for discos and I love to dance, my husband doesn’t really like nightclubs and I don’t drink or smoke so I don’t go to clubs. It’s hard for me to unwind in the city because everyone knows me so I tend to escape to places like Khao Yai or the ocean. Where’s the best place to shop in Bangkok? Definitely Siam Centre because most Thai fashion designers are available there and I love their style. I travel to France, Hong Kong and the UK quite often but high fashion there is so expensive, whereas in Bangkok top Thai brands like Greyhound, Issue and Theater are very affordable. Although I am a bit too old for their designs so I go for Fly Now, especially their new ‘Garden’ line. If you had a first-time visitor from overseas where would you recommend they spend an afternoon in Bangkok? Shopping wise, they should go to Rama One road, starting at Discovery Centre, stopping off at Siam Centre, Paragon, Central World, Gaysorn and finishing up at Central Chidlom. The loveliest area for sight-seeing is around Wat Prakeow (The Grand Palace).

What’s the biggest and best change to the city in the last 20 years? I would say would be the development of Sukhumvit Road and the faciliWhat was the last great movie you saw? I don’t like movies much because when I ties that support it such as the skytrain and was a kid my father used to make me write underground train system. a short summery of movies after I’d watched them, so that sort of put me off at an early What does Bangkok need less of? [TEN OUT OF TEN] SU PH A N U T SU WA N SA N YA

by Ashley Simcox 20

At twenty-five, Sup bravely turned his back on a BA in Economics from Srinakarinwirot University and decided that fashion design was his future. Starting completely from scratch, Sup fled to London College of Fashion and graduated with a BA in Fashion Design Technology Menswear with first class honours and the highest score of the year. Now he’s back in Bangkok actualizing his designing dreams as well as teaching young fashion students the will of the way at Bangkok Fashion Academy. Tell us about your clothing lines… I have two lines, “Suphanut Suwansanya” is a more personal project; which is more fantastical and free because I was never primarily concerned with sales. 10/10 is my men’s ready-to-wear clothing line, which will launch later this year. It’s more wearable and practical, but still has elements of myself injected into every piece. How would you describe your clothing? Sophisticated with a twist of fun - it’s structured, with bold details and lots of layering. What is the theme of your latest collection? The working title is “Get Loud in a Quiet Room”. I have mixed bold shape elements from my last two collections in a new way for 10/10, to make a sort of hybrid fashion baby. It is more wearable, but still has my signature on it. I want the bold details to make the wearers stand out from the crowd as if they are shouting in a quiet room.

What accessory do you love so much that you wear every day? Sunglasses. They are a must in my everyday life -- especially my vintage Cazal and Paloma Picasso pair. Who are your muses? Rosin Murphy; I love her style and her music. It seems like you can throw anything on her and she can pull it off and make it look good. Also Grace Jones. She has so much life and has a very original character. Besides fashion what inspires you when you are designing a new collection? Music videos. The feeling of the song and video, colours, tone and mood give me inspiration for what kind of character I want to put in the new collection. Is there anything you cannot eat? I will not eat snakes, bugs, or birds. I stick to meat you can get from a supermarket.

Who is your favourite fashion designer? Viktor&Rolf; I love they way they think and believe that their strong and interesting concepts always make for outrageous and unique creations.

TOP 10 TRACKS

[ BAN GKOK T UN E S ]

..........................................................................................................................................

28

1. Goldie - Inner City Life This song came out when I’d just moved to Bangkok. It takes me back to those drum'n' bass parties back in the 90s where spontaneity and chaos would often melt into one big surprise, just how I feel about Bangkok.

6. Portishead - Roads It was almost dawn, I was in a car on the way home with a few mates and we put on the Portishead CD and turned up the volume. The resulting silence from everyone in the car spoke louder than words. We got lost in the lights and the sereneness of the city.

2. Madonna - Erotica Bangkok is a very sexy city and sometimes comes on strong, like a dominatrix on heat. Listening to this track, whilst wandering around the red light district is somehow liberating and makes one want to very bad, bad things.

7. Massive Attack - Angel The guitar riffs in Angel always conjure up visions of Bangkok, maybe because of its roughness and high energy which wraps itself around you so tightly just like the seductive arms of the City of Angels.

3. Suede - Beautiful Ones This is the ‘Dudesweet’ party people’s theme song. Whenever I hear it, no matter where I am, memories flood back of sweaty bodies and good times with close friends and complete strangers at ‘Dudesweet’. ‘Here they come, the beautiful ones, here they come, la la la la la…’

8. The Manic Street Preachers - A Design For Life ‘We don’t talk about love we only want to get drunk / And we are not allowed to spend / As we are told that this is the end. A design for life’. The song reminds me of so many good times, getting absolutely trashed on Sangsom whiskey and coke in dodgy bars! A great design for a Thai life indeed!

4. Futon - Bangkok Chemist ‘Cream that makes you white / Pills that make you slim / Drinks that make you go all night / Till you're retchin' in someone else's garbage bin / Horns that makes you hard / Fins that make you wise / Speed that makes you a target / And addictions you love to despise / Bangkok chemist Shoppings List / Spins you out you get my drift’. This is so Bangkok, don't you think?

9. LCD Soundsystem - Drunk Girls Yes I'm one of them drunk bitches on the dancefloor, on the streets of Bangkok, in the back of a taxi or at home and don't really have to work. Getting drunk is a priority. Weekends are overrated so I start drinking from Wednesday night. What can I say? Bangkok always spoils me big time!

10. Goldfrapp - Alive A new electro pop track from Goldfrapp that sums up my new attitude towards Bangkok af5. Bjork - All Is Full Of Love Picture the scene: Bangkok in the rain, sultry ter the dark days. As we try to move on and fix yet peaceful. Wires and cables are high up in ourselves our beloved city becomes more alive the sky and people give you those electric and more kicking than ever. Rock on Bangkok! smiles. All is full of love. 29

COVER STORY ..........................................................................................................................................

Maria Lynn Ehren Bangkok's it-girl

Words by Ploycarat Nana | Photo by Pornsarun Soithong

32

A towering inferno of gorgeousness, Maria is everything most girls dream of. Leggy, lovely and chic, she embarked on her modelling career four years ago after her taekwondo teacher’s girlfriend talked her into getting on the catwalk at Bangkok Fashion Week. Sooner than you can say ‘super model’, she went from being a shy young teen that couldn’t walk in heels to a fashionista’s fantasy girl. Now she’s made heads turn, she’s about to get them bopping with her debut single ‘Blur’. Ploycarat Nana catches up with Maria Lynn Ehren for Bed Sheets magazine. Maria started her singing career with Small Room Records after she met her producer at a music video shoot for the Thai band L-emonsoup. Maria’s CD is the label’s first dance venture. “The pressure’s really on because it’s the first pop-dance album from this label. It’s a different type of pop dance to Japanese or Korean pop, it more like ‘indy’ pop’.”

“I’m not allowed to miss any school, so I never skip classes. Usually my photo shoots are done at weekends or after school.”

She goes on to reveal why ‘Blur’ became the first single “It’s the directional song. We based everything around this song. So, it just had to be the first release.” Maria has just finished high school, so I wondered about her grades and how she found time to study with her demanding modeling and singing careers. Despite her hectic daily schedules, Maria still manages to squeeze some in some wind-down time, “I do taekwando and play tennis regularly”. Maria is now planning the next chapter of her life and preparing to study business administration at a university in Rotterdam, quite fitting really as the MV for her next single, ‘Boong’, is set in a library.

on Aromatherapy.

Recently I found myself in Bangkok having one of those days when I felt completely grey of face and spirit. I had a nap then covered my face in some thick smelly grey mud from Rotorua in New Zealand. And it worked. It’s a cliché that getting back to nature can help balance the travails of the rat race but that’s because it’s true. I for one never have a plain bath. I originally made the blend below to help counter jetlag after a long flight to London but it occurred to me it would also have suited the conditions of Bangkok, so I named it the ‘Bangkok City Survival’ blend.

Essential Facts

............................................................

Instructions and health and safety:

Aromatherapy dates back to ancient Egypt, where plants and flowers were distilled to extract their essential oils. The oils enter the body through the skin and through smell and have a beneficial effect on both physical and emotional well-being. They are very concentrated so it is important not to use them internally, undiluted, or during pregnancy. It is easy to make your own blends and products. Always blend the essences alone first to get the aroma you want before adding. Use approximately 12 drops to 30 mls of plain massage oil or lotion, less for sensitive skin. For the bath, put about four to six drops in directly before you get in, or if you have very sensitive skin dilute in a spoon of milk or oil first. You could also buy a readymade product. We love Invigorate blend by COMO Shambhala from their Spa at the Metropolitan Hotel on Sathorn Road. If you do buy readymade products, don’t forget to read the label because if the stuff inside doesn’t work the placebo effect will. Victoria Kirkwood - London 2010. 38

ART ..........................................................................................................................................

PATRAVADI MEJUDHON Patravadi Mejudhon is one of the most prominent figures in today’s Thai arts scene. The pioneering and visionary actress, model and entrepreneur has brought Thai theatre back into the spotlight and in doing so has herself become a national treasure. Born into a privileged family Patravadi was sent to study abroad in the UK at a young age. There, she was exposed to Western performing arts and decided to pursue a career in theatre by joining the Pasadena Playhouse in the United States. Her talent caught the eye of a then famous Thai film director Parinya Leelasorn and led to her first starring role in 'No Heaven For You'. The role gained her a Supannahong award ( the Thai equivalent of Oscars) and marked the beginning of her life in the public eye. Patravadi garnered more praise when she wrote the screenplay for the film 'Miss Maliwan', which became an instant national hit. The film was a controversial representation of Thai feminism and revolutionised Thai show business by introducing more variety in roles for Thai actresses. In 1982, her life took a swift change when she married a foreign diplomat and lived abroad in cities such as New York and Ottawa. However, she remained very much involved in Thai show business and continued to win numerous awards for her contribution. In 1983, Patravadi introduced Thailand to a Broadway-style musical with her production of “One Night with Patravadi”, a concert-style show with singing and dancing. As well as introducing Thailand to Western performing arts, she also reconnects Thai society with its cultural heritage by producing plays and dance shows featuring traditional Thai music and folk songs. In 1992, Patravadi started her own theatre production house called 'Patravadi Theatre and Dance Company' which promotes and supports rising actors and actresses to achieve their full potential. The company is responsible for producing generations of Thai superstars. Patravadi’s reputation extends across Asia as her company grows and invites more fellow Asian artists to perform. What distinguishes Patravadi from other actresses is her role as a teacher and mentor for the younger generations. She shares her knowledge and experience at lectures and workshops in universities across Thailand. However, Patravadi is by no means a ‘drama queen’. She’s known fondly by all as ‘Kru Lek’ and admired for her warm, compassionate and lively character. As long as Patravadi is around, the show will go on…! 40

WIT PIMKANCHANAPONG Wit Pimkanchanapong is Thailand’s first true ‘media artist’. His work has appeared in galleries all over the globe, from Bangkok to Berlin. He’s also become a mentor for a new generation of aspiring artists. Surprisingly Wit first shot to fame as an accomplished actor, when he won the Supannahong Award for ‘Best Supporting Actor’, soon after he became a TV star when he co-hosted the popular satiric show 'Yuthakarn Ka-Yub-Ngeuk'. However, his true artistic calling was to strong to ignore and he ditched his thespian tendencies to concentrate on visual and graphic media. He left Thailand to study visual art at Kent Institute of Art and Designs in the UK. Soon after his return he became an influential figure in Bangkok's underground scene and much sought after for big concerts and exhibitions. In 2004, Wit formed ‘Duck Unit’ a collective of artists inspired by the Japanese group Maywa Denki. Their motto is ‘We can do everything, but specialize in nothing.’ Wit Pimkanchanapong’s background in architecture is often reflected in his work, which focuses around the idea of mapping, distortion, hypertext, and space in-between. One of Wit’s many masterpieces was the ‘Overhead Night Club 2.0’, which consisted of a large elevated box with a small holes cut out where the audience could poke their heads through and embody the experience of being in a full-on nightclub complete with strobe-lights and pumping music. Wit explains that the audience does not need to have their full bodies in the box to get the ‘clubbing’ experience, they only need their minds to be receptive. Another is the 3D installation structure called ‘Mai-Ya-Rab’ (‘Mimosa’) which was exhibited at Bangkok Gallery. The structure is made up of small leaf-like, electric wind turbines that spin continuously to create the illusion of mimosa leafs opening and closing. The work was very well received by art critics. He then created a sequel entitled ‘Not Quite a Total Eclipse’, which followed the same principle as ‘Mimosa’ but focused more extensively on light and shadow. Again, Wit attempted to engage the various senses and trigger reactions from his audience, this time by creating an artificial representation of a solar eclipse. His installation ‘Fruits’ is a fruit-stand modelled on those found on street corners in Sharjah in the Middle East, where the work was first produced. Visitors are invited to make paper bananas, apples, oranges, pears and tropical fruits from cardboard cut-outs. The tabs which must be used in order to glue the fruit templates together hold text: names of different fruit written in Arabic, Thai and English which, when matched correctly, enable the successful completion of the model; the flat shape providing a map to the three-dimensional form. The meeting of different languages also suggests international communication and understanding. 42

Top : 3D installation structure ‘Mai-Ya-Rab’ Bottom Left : Installation ‘Fruits’ Bottom Right : Wit Pimkanchanapong

Wit often participates in Thai youth culture at events such as the annual ‘Fat Festival’ . His work is therefore accessible to the younger Thai audience and ‘indy kids’ who dominate the underground arts scene. Wit Pimkanchanapong currently lives and works in Bangkok. 43

THE LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE

46

Thai film director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang teams up with SEA Write Award winner Prabda Yoon for the story of an obsessive-compulsive, suicidal Japanese man living in Bangkok. Released : August 2003 What’s the Story? A tragic chain of events results in depressed neat-freak librarian Kenji having his ordered life thrown into chaos by a dippy Thai chick who’s everything he is not, : a messy, lazy stoner. Somehow the unlikely union works and slowly we learn shy Kenji is lost and lonely in Bangkok.

Cast Tadanobu Asano ... Kenji Sinitta Boonyasak ... Noi Laila Boonyasak ... Nid Yutaka Matsushige ... Yukio Riki Takeuchi ... Takashi

Film Facts During the library scene where Kenji first encounters Nid, a hanging poster for the Takashi Miike film ‘Ichi the Killer’ is clearly featured. Tandanobu Asano was also the star of that film. In the hospital emergency room scene, a spiky-haired actor in a white lab coat is seen sitting at a desk. This is a reference to Dr Porntip Rojanasunand, Thailand's famous forensic pathologist - who's not only a celebrity for her wild hairstyle, but also for her skill and integrity. (See our interview with her on page 26) The actresses who play Nid and Noi are real sisters. The movie title isn't displayed until over 30 minutes into the film. The movie was Thailand's official submission for the Oscars in 2003. Film Quote ‘My name is Kenji. This could be me three hours from now. Why do I want to kill myself? I don't know...’ Movie Boiled Down To Three Leonard Cohen Songs 1. Born To Lose. 2. One of Us Cannot Be Wrong. 3. Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye.

For maximising the potential of social media in a masterly fashion I take my hat off to W+K – but, strategy aside, and ignoring the fact that the Old Spice executions rely more heavily on irony than insight, I'm really not being swept away with the online tide because I just can't erase the stench of the anticlimax of unwrapping a present and finding a gift pack of aftershave, deodorant spray and talc rather than a toy or at least some chocolate bursting out of my stocking on Christmas morning. Specifically, while the multiple online replies are the result of a superb piece of planning, the branding is scarily really just smelly mutton dressed up as lamb.

DIET-FRIENDLY ALCOHOL OPTIONS The good news is that alcohol is fat-free and low in carbs but before you embark on an alcohol-loaded diet be aware that it's calories that count when it comes to weight loss! Plus your body processes alcohol first, leaving those cumbersome carbohydrates and fearsome fats to get stored as fat instead of getting used as fuel. So the trick is to have a tipple but don’t go over the top. Wine is the most calorie-friendly choice with no cholesterol, sodium or fat and an average 20 calories per ounce. This is true for both red and white wine, from merlot to chardonnay. Hands off Gran’s cooking sherry as the calorie count leaps to around 32 calories per ounce.

WORK IT OUT! • Don’t start stretching straight away. It’s much better to warm up for around five minutes to loosen your muscles. • Make sure you are training with the proper resistance size. You should start feeling tired after about 10-12 reps. • Focus and concentrate on the muscle(s) you are working on during a specific exercise and make sure that you don’t allow your other muscle groups to help with the exercise. • Don’t become a creature of habit in the gym. Change your fitness routine every four to six weeks to prevent a workout plateau.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT • Rethink your fridge and stock your shelves strategically. Experts reckon that we’re 2.7 times more likely to choose healthy food if it’s in our line of sight. That’s also why food companies pay premiums in the US to place their products at eye level in stores. So hide the biscuits behind the greens. • Don’t pass the salt, ditch it ! Salt heavy foods seduce and stimulate the brain’s pleasure centre, resulting in an addiction to salty snacks. Yes that’s why you get those cravings for chips! Experts now believe that salty food could activate the release of opioids linked with reward. So your brain needs more and more to produce the same pleasure.

HEALTH FREAKS & HEDONISTS

Or: How I’ve Learned To Survive A Night At Bed Supperclub. Photo and Words by Sanya Souvanna Phouma

My friends have been complimenting me a lot lately about the way I look. I have to admit that I’ve been very careful about what I have consumed recently. I think that «radical» would be a better word. I’ve been following a strict diet that has best suited my blood type for weight loss: The D’Adamo diet, you know... the author of

EAT RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE.

Admitedly, the inception of my weight-loss programme began last year when my physician showed me the results of my health check-up. One word: ALARMING! I was heading straight for a wall. Too much fat, alcohol, sugars and not enough exercise. It took six months to get into the habit of running for 30 minutes, three times a week a n d mor e i m p or t a n t ly, I had cut all the sugars and alcohol intake. It was then I started the D’Adamo diet. As a blood type ‘A’, I was only allowed chicken, fish and lots of spinach and broccoli (yawn). And as for the booze, a limited amount of red wine was the only option. 54

Pomegranates contain the most antioxidants of any natural food. One of our desserts has a spoonful of it. Ask your waiter to find out which one!

HANG THE DJ ..........................................................................................................................................

8 REQUESTS THAT WON'T GET PLAYED Words by Fred Jungo | Photo by John Beara 72

[ S OUN D ]

1

“I don't know who sings it or what it's called but it goes something like" (breaks into song) “lalalala la nanana" do you have it?” Please save your singing for the shower The DJ probably can’t hear you anyway because he’s got the music cranked up so high.

2

“Why aren’t you playing the track I requested? Everybody wants to hear it.” Sure, you surveyed the club and everybody wants to hear your song, so as their spokesman you are requesting it on their behalf. We think not.

3

"Can you play something with a beat?" Every song has a beat. Close your eyes, find it and your feet will follow.

4

“ Have you got any Hip Hop?” (on a House night). Have you not realised that the DJ has been playing House music for the last two hours and don't you think that if Hip Hop was on the menu tonight he would have played some already?

5

‘Can I make a request? What do you have?” Do you really want the DJ to name every song he has in his box?

6

7

8

“I requested that song 10 minutes ago, when are you going to play it? “ The only people who can get away with this demand write the DJ's paychecks or gave birth to him/her.

"Can you play it now, we’re leaving soon?" Let's look at this from a business standpoint, if you are going to leave right after the DJ plays it, shouldn't he wait until the very last song, so you stay all night?

“If you play ‘Can't Take My Eyes Off You’ I'll give you a tip.” Here’s a tip for you, there isn’t a tip big enough to get the DJ to play a song that’s going to clear the dancefloor.

MORE STUFF NOT TO SAY TO A DJ can you play it again? / is it gonna be this music all night? / where can I buy drugs? / can you play my CD, track 4? / you don't have that track? Hang on, i have the CD in my car / can I look through your cds? / I am a dj too, can I play a couple of tracks? / have you anything I like? / do you have any good music / can you play something more generic / do you have Russian, Indian, Arabic music? / can you play hed kandi? / what? you don't have that track? And you call yourself a DJ? Catch Fred Jungo every Friday and Saturday @ Bed Supperclub … ( & if you really want to wind him up, go up to him & request ‘Barbie Girl’ – Editor) 73

DIMITRI LEZINSKA, GREY GOOSE GLOBAL BRAND AMBASSADOR What’s the hardest mix to get right? My mantra when creating cocktails is that there are no disasters, only ways to perfection. Mixing cocktails shouldn’t be seen as difficult. If the flavours work together then you’ve created something you can enjoy. But if you try a mix of ingredients that doesn’t work, then you learn from that and try something different. What’s your signature drink? For this summer, my signature drink is called Graduated to Culture – a drink that I was offering to guests in France. After visiting Picardy to learn about the soft winter wheat used to make Grey Goose and a trip to Cognac – the home of Grey Goose – I felt this drink was a great way to celebrate the experience. What are you doing that we won’t find elsewhere? I recently made my own wine using a steam juice extractor. This machine enables me to capture the juice and authentic flavour of the fruits selected and – when mixed with Grey Goose - it recreates the exact same profile and texture of a wine, with all its complexities. Called the Château Grey Goose, this drink has the taste and texture of a Syrah wine.

When and why did you decide to become a mixologist? I prefer to telling people ‘I make cocktails’ over the word ‘mixologist’. I started 16 years ago when I went to work in the bar because I was curious about the industry. But my career really started – and I started making great cocktails – about 10 years ago when I was inspired by my industry peers. And, even to this day, I’m constantly improving. What advice could you give the beginning home bartender?: As I mentioned previously, there are no disasters, only ways to perfection. My tips for the new at home bartender are: · Get a beginners book – one of my favourites is The Essential Bartender's Guide by Robert Hess. The book provides insight into the synergy of quality ingredients and the balance that is needed between the ingredients. · Never compromise on quality, your cocktail will only be as good as your cheapest ingredient. · And finally...always shake with a smile!! What marks the difference between a bartender & mixologist? A mixologist makes great drinks and a bartender is a great host, but ultimately it doesn’t matter as they both contribute greatly to the industry because whether we are bartenders, spirits advisors, barchefs or mixologists, we all recognise one thing – and I’ll quote my fellow Grey Goose Brand Ambassador, Ludo Miazga: The world deserves better cocktails.

Nov 24th-Nov 27th, 2010 Grey Goose’s Global Brand Ambassador, Dimitri Lezinska comes to Bed for four consecutive nights to pair his cocktails with dinner nightly in the restaurant. Shaken or stirred. 80

ALL ABOUT BED

Frequently Asked Questions by Bed G.M, Justin Dunne

.......................................................................................................................................... What the hell – I thought you guys were renovating? Yeah, us too! Unfortunately, largely due to the political unrest earlier this year, we decided that it would be best to hold off on the renovations until next year. Eight years, are you serious? How do you keep it innovative and fresh? Creativity. We’ve been blessed to have several individuals on staff that have a real knack for looking at things differently and then shaping our events, themes, magazine, menus, etc around these unique ideas. Through all Bangkok’s ups and downs during the last eight years, is there one consistent? Yes, the best Xmas and NYE parties are held at Bed so make your reservations now! What’s been the most consistent challenge during the last eight years? “Please Bring ID.” We’re always still shocked at the number of people who don’t carry ID (not even a copy). We’ll never understand it. “But, I have a credit card.” Um, no.

What does Bed have now that you did not have eight years ago? Wow. Big question. Facebook, www.bedsupperclub.com, Bed Sheets Magazine, newsletters, paid parking, the Bed CD, offsite offices, smoking outside only, E-flyers, Bangkok Invaders, questions about fire safety, 3 am closing, “Something is happening”, Models Night, an offsite storage site crammed with props and costumes, www.bedsheetsmagazine.com, Nexo sound system, Grey Goose, a weaker USD exchange rate, CCTVs, Bed World Cards, Twitter, Face the Music Feast, Flickr, neighbours on all 4 corners, reciprocal agreements with other clubs, greening efforts, expansion. And on the other side of this last question, what does Bed still have now that it also had eight years ago? Same owners, Rehab, ‘Surprise Menu’ on weekends, melting chocolate tart, late night taxi drivers that don’t want to turn on their meters, open seven days, the White Room. The Bed Bar, Absolut, smart-casual dress code, sharing soi 11 with Q-Bar and 7-11s, B-52s, positive vibes. Can you please bring back the Moet Garden? We sure hope so. We are currently negotiating with the BMA to bring back a temporary bar/smoking section for our anniversary party on October 7th, 2010. Watch that space! Your 8th Anniversary party is Thursday, October 7th, yes? When did Bed officially open? Bed opened its doors on September 8th, 2002, but we now hold the anniversary parties in early October to help minimise the chance of rain. See you there!! Justin Dunne
