It’s hard not to scowl as we wade through another wet season amid troubled times in the ‘Land of Smiles’ . So we decided to take a breather from the battle to keep credit crunches, deadly diseases and potty politicians at bay and focus on positive energy. Whether it’s an electromagnetic force or a connection between people, ATTRACTION is the catalyst that draws one object towards another and gets things started. So we decided to adopt it as the theme for this issue.
Bed Supperclub and Sound Phuket have a wicked selection of world class artists appearing over the next two months. From the Buddha Bar’s Dj Ravin to acid house pioneer Dj Pierre we profile the cream of the crop.
Thai heartthrobs Jay Montonn & Ananda Everingham prove they’re not just pretty faces as they share their words & wisdom. We also get UK fashion queen Vivienne Westwood’s muse & model Sarah Stockbridge to talk about her debut novel. Plus we bring you another first, Bangkok’s hippest new band the Keylookz.
and feeling bad, you’re pushing it away
And finally some wise words off the internet from someone very clever: “Whenever you’re thinking about a subject and feeling good you’re attracting it unto you. Whenever you’re thinking about a subject from you.”

DJ’s CRAZE & KLEVER GO HEAD 2 HEAD IN BED SUPPERCLUB ! Three time winner at the DMC World Championships, DJ Craze is unquestionably one of the best scratch DJs in the world. Last year Kanye West hi-jacked Craze and took him on tour as his official Dj. On top of his untouchable turntablist skills and scratch champion showmanship, Craze is also a second to none club DJ. Style-wise there’s no pigeonholing Craze & Klever but expect tons of skool club sounds. Steve Aoki, Justice, Crookers & The Bloody Beetroots fans… prepare to get very giddy on the dancefloor. Superfly & super fast like cartoons on fast forward these 2 champion turntabalists take no prisoners as they cut to the chase and whack up the bass to get the crowd jumping. Beyond his accredited mastery as a turntablist the 2 time US Disco Mix Club champ DJ Klever aka Josh Winkler has developed a blazing reputation for his crowd-roaring routines and mix sets. His signature style (on and off the decks) moves crowds in every direction, from his roots of crunk, booty, and hip hop to the sweaty sounds of electro, dance-rock, b-more, new-wave, hard rock, and anything worthy to make you rock with finesse.

GET SET FOR THE GODFATHER OF ACID HOUSE! DJ Pierre will stop off on the way to a summer residency in Ibiza to make his Bangkok debut. Chicago-born Dj Pierre, who pioneered the Acid scene some 25 years ago with his group Phuture, will also headline the Ministry Of Sound’s 20-year acid world tour later this year. DJ/Producer/Remixer, Nathaniel Pierre Jones AKA “The Don” is a rare breed. An artist who’s considered a mentor to many of the ‘A’ list DJ fraternity and one man who continues to stand strong in an industry that’s had more than its share of ups ‘n’ downs. Proving he still has his finger on the pulse, earlier this year Pierre released his ‘I’ve Lost Control’ single on DJ Hell’s Gigolo imprint label.

TOTAL SCIENCE CHAMPION THE SOUND OF DRUM & BASS Drum & bass duo Total Science bonded over their mutual adoration for hip-hop music way back in 1987. Since then the prolific pair have been behind scores of belting dancefloor fillers released under various monikers. In 1994, they recorded together under the name Funky Technicians and released ‘Got to Believe’, the first in a series of records which pushed them beyond the many anonymous white labels that were dominating music at the time. The Bad Company remix of their ‘Champion Sound’ track propelled them to the forefront of the D&B scene and is regarded by many as a jungle classic. Played by the likes of Hype, Fabio, Golde, Zane Lowe, Ronnie herel and Trevor Nelson their single ‘Never Had a Dream’ reached Number 1 in the UK Dance charts. These days the duo have drifted away from the darkside movement and are now known for their epic string sections and rolling beats.

Audiowhores ‘Stay’ Shik Stylko remix… songs with vocals either work or they don’t! I always go straight for the instrumental or dub mix! Your Apartment is on Fire, you can save one record, what’s it going to be? Michael Masser and Mandrill ‘ Ali Bom-Ba Ye’ on Arista records 1977. SCENE & HEARD Remika Rajkitkul
Like the name suggests, the Long Room is one long room. This swanky spot is my second home whenever I spend Friday nights in Melbourne. The glamorous lounge bar, which often transforms into a club, has an opulent majestic ambience and is always decorated with beautiful people, grooving to great music.
The Long Room Melbourne What’s nearby? Located in the iconic George’s Building in Busy Collins St, The Long Room is close to everything, from fine eateries to five star hotels and even a church should one require a quick confession.
What’s the vibe? Think Manhattan in Melbourne. Fashionista & freaks meet yuppie chic. The leggy ladies look like they’ve been plucked out of a Music video by r&b singer Ne Yo. The international crowd is above 25+
What are people dancing to ? Live DJs spin a wide selection of tunes from hip hop to house.
072
So who should we look out for ?
Wallpaper or Warehouse?
The Long Room’s world class reputation attracts A-list celebrities & jet set socialites. Yes that probably is thee Richard Branson surrounded by a posse of playmates and chances are the rest who you don’t recognise are also on the Forbes 500 Rich list.
The Australian Liquor Industry recognized Long room as the “Best New Venue Design 2005” for its carefully planned sections, railed separations, low velvet couching, candle light, modern electric fireplace, and a faux moose head.
What time should we make an entrance?
Coins or credit cards?
For small talk, come before 10pm. The place gets packed after 11pm, which often means long lines to get in. Things start to wind down around 2am and the joint shuts at 3am.
No entrance fees - probably why I am on a first name basis with the bouncers! Cocktails range from A$ 10 - $15, but are so rich they could double as deserts. Food-wise expect to fork out between A$25 – 50 per head depending on the selection.
What’s good to eat?
So how do we get there ?
Choose from the authentic Japanese Sushi Bar or munch at the European Tapas-style Deli, both complemented with outstanding Wine, Liqueur and Cocktail lists.
If you can’t be bothered driving the Lamborghini , there’s a tram stop nearby or tell your taxi to head for George’s Building in Collins St.
What should we wear?
www.thelongroom.com.au 162-168 Collins St, Melbourne, Australia (03) 9663 7226
Forget flip flops and shorts and think formal then take it up a further few notches and your almost halfway there. Think the casino scene from Ocean’s Eleven.

SNATCH WARS. I don't usually bother with Youtube remixes but this is quality. Brick Vader, 'London's Lord of the Sith', stars in a mash-up collision of the East End and our favourite galaxy far, far away. Via blog-less Igor.
DELETE. We've seen the street fight back before in the shape of pockets of Brandalism, but now direct volunteer action has reached an unprecedented scale – with NYC collective New York Street Advertising Takeover (or NYSAT) whitewashing 126 unregistered (and unsightly) bill boards that were up until now being used illegally. And the good news too is that in most cases the replacement imagery is more pleasing to the eye than the typical corporate clutter that it's supplanted. Via social media master Neil Perkin.

REAL BITE. After the recent furore concerning Middle Eastern/Asian scam work – covered by Anibus, Scamp and The Opinionated Sod – it's great to see some work from the region with real bite produced for a client that actually belongs to an agency. And not only does this work tie in nicely with our penchant for pink/brown art direction, our continuing Easter chocolate theme and at least one other post featuring work involving teeth, it's also another, er, shining example of boundary-smashing stuff for Colgate. If this runs, then it ‘s really hats off to Y&R – for turning their back on interruptive advertising, putting creative before media buying and for taking on the logistical feat of embedding a piece of communication within the product of another brand. Via the consistently enlightening Angus Whines.
NO BULL. Meanwhile over at The Musings of an Opinionated Sod, a brand of bog roll really not to be, er, poo-pooed boldly presented itself. Initially art (not novelty) and now a fully-fledged FMCG, Jed Ela's ShitBegone is really no bull. As the Poop Report so clearly states "ShitBegone is art masquerading as commerce, and is succeeding in both worlds", and as Jed Ela himself tidily explains in perfect marketspeak, the piece, essentially a by-product of Duchampian readymades and commodity-art, is now in full "commodity stream" – while fulfilling one of the key contemporary functions of modern art: operating as a "system for the production of knowledge."

FATAL ATTRACTION The film that made men more monogamous and spawned a nation of bunny - boilers.
Cast Michael Douglas Glenn Close Anne Archer
Dan Gallagher Alex Forrest Beth Gallagher
Released : September 1987 Tagline : On the other side of drinks, dinner and a one night stand, lies a terrifying love story.
What’s the story? While his wife is away, family man Dan Callagher (Michael Douglas) has a quick fling with colleague Alex Forrest (Glenn Close). However Alex has trouble with the word fling and so instead decides to cling, stalk and terrorize. Dan’s life becomes a nightmare as Alex insists on continuing the relationship. The besieged family man eventually has to deal with a love-struck psycho-siren that kidnaps his child, boils his pet rabbit and attacks his wife with a knife.
Quote Alex : [on the phone to Dan] Bring the dog, I love animals... I’m a great cook.
Film Facts The original ending had Alex committing suicide and Dan being charged with her murder but the producers and director decided to redo it after preview audiences were upset that Alex was not brought to justice. Glenn Close was opposed to the decision and fought for two weeks not to change it. She finally caved in and re-shot the new ending. The DVD version has both endings. Glenn Close consulted three separate shrinks for an inner profile of her character who is meant to be suffering from a form of obsessive condition known as de Clérambault’s syndrome. Alex’s treatment of the pet rabbit has given rise to the commonly used expression “bunny boiler” in the UK -- used to describe an obsessive woman with the potential to stalk casual acquaintances or one-night stands.

Her debut novel “Hammer” I have two kids so … ‘The Big Honey Hunt’ by Stan and Jan is a murder story set on the Berenstain or maybe ‘Are you my Mother?’ by PD Eastman. dank dark streets of Victorian London. Has Vivienne read your book yet?
Yes! She has and she said a lot of brilliant things about it. In fact she came to a reading recently and put her hand up in the q&a part and said ‘I don’t have a question but I’d like to give an appraisal of this book.’ And then proceeded to big it up in a major fashion. Can you imagine! I couldn’t be more chuffed because if she’d thought it was crap she would have said so.
What’s your favoured distraction when you’re procrastinating?
The Jeremy Kyle TV show and I’m really, really ashamed of that because I think he is absolutely loathsome. Ugh! He represents this very dangerous puritanical mindset - I sit and shout at the TV when he’s on. Telly in general is an awful waste of time.
Which film was better than the book? Lord of the Rings.
What’s the most overrated book?
Lord of the Rings! Dan Brown’s Da Vinci thing is the obvious choice but it’s not really overrated because people know its crap really, even though they enjoy reading it, whereas Lord of the Rings was actually voted best book in the English language a few years back. I’m sure Tolkien himself would have had the grace to be horrified at that.
What are your thoughts on censorship in literature?
Huge deep question! I think we just can’t allow it. Not in literature. Who is the person who gets to decide what’s allowed? People aren’t stupid anyway. You can’t make them think anything - not if they’re reading books to start with.
Pitch us your latest book in less than 30 words.
HAMMER is the story of criminal matriarch Grace, who picks pockets in Victorian Whitechapel; buried treasure - and an old score that leaps seventeen years and comes to slit her throat.

TO MAKE YOURSELF MORE
ATTRACTIVE In the quest to figure out how we pick partners scientists have sniffed sweaty armpits, measured Playboy models and spent hours watching monkeys mating. We wiped down their research and delved through it to get expert advice on how to make yourself more attractive.
Cheesy as this sounds you must learn to like yourself first. Once you shine from within you immediately make yourself more beautiful. Positive energy has a very powerful magnetic effect that pulls people towards you. And don’t come off as desperate. Any sign of desperation will scare someone away quicker than you can say ‘loser’. Staring, stalking or begging will definitely not make you appear attractive to anyone other than councillors and serial killers.
Aroma is a major factor in attraction so make sure you smell good. Smell is one of the brain’s strongest senses. It is the sense that provokes the most intense emotions so make sure that you are pushing the right buttons. Save the sweat for the scientists and invest in an odourless deodorant and a good scent. Taste is subjective but an expensive perfume hardly ever offends unless you’re drenched in it.

Be Flirtatious - Someone who knows how to flirt will always attract more people than someone who solely relies on their looks. Make eye contact but no Charlie Manson or Mr Bean Stares. Just shoot the person a quick gaze, smile with your eyes, and then slowly look away. Wait a few seconds then casually glance back, if you notice the person looking back to meet your eyes you’ve scored a home run and are through to the next round.
Improve your Posture. Excessive slouching can make you look boring, miserable, or just plain wretched. Altogether now! Chest out, stomach in, shoulders up, butt out……and breathe.
You’re in the land of smiles so when in Rome, Smile. Anyone flashing a smile will always be perceived to be more attractive but do perfect your smile. Practice at home in front of a mirror to make sure it doesn’t look like a mental grin or snide sneer
Grooming is imperative so get rid of all unwanted hair. This includes nose hair, ear hair, facial hair (especially if you’re female), and inappropriate body hair. Also don’t get your hair done at the local salon. Splash out and get your mop done at an expensive trendy hairdresser.
Appear friendly and approachable. Use your body language to give the right signals that you are a fun person. If you act aloof you’ll only attract ice queens and control freaks.

Battle of the Bottles! Here’s the top 10 essential spirits that should sit neatly on your bar at home and that you should order at Bed Supperclub. In no particular order…. Vodka : Grey Goose – hailing from the Cognac region of France, the ‘World’s best tasting Vodka,’ is great in martinis and the perfect partner for fresh oysters. Bourbon : Maker’s Mark – look for the red wax signature seal top. Maker’s Mark is the best bourbon in Bangkok. Smooth, creamy, and loaded with vanilla. Tequila : Patron – 100% blue agave, this tequila is best for sipping and for margaritas; shooting this tequila would be like beer bonging Champagne. Cachaca Rum : Leblon – distilled in Brazil and then shipped off to France for aging in Cognac casks. Although only a handful of Cachaca rums are available in Bangkok, if you’re ordering a Caipirinha, ask for it with Leblon.. Live Love Leblon. Gin : South Gin – a truly unique gin from New Zealand (the same people behind 42 Below Vodka). Produced from GE Free wheat, this fine spirit has been distilled 4 times and has 9 botanicals (even the best gins usually have only 8). X-Rated
Liqueur : Chambord – the bottle comes with a crown on top; what more do I need to say. Recently re-introduced into Bangkok after a 4 year absence, this blackberry flavored liqueur from France is a must have for any bar. Great in cocktails and great with ice cream and chocolates. Specialty Liqueur Vodka : X-Rated – imported from France, this pink liqueur has a premium vodka base that is infused with Provence blood oranges, mangoes, and passion fruit. Single Malt Whisky : Laphroaig 10 years – love it or hate it, Laphroaig is one of the most richly flavored whiskies in the world. The first time I took a nip it was like biting into the end of my grandfather’s pipe. Despite there being several other good single malts on the market here in Bangkok, Laphroaig remains a popular favorite. Beer : Guinness Stout – I love the heritage. I love the stories. I love the fact that Guinness is so much less carbonated than most other beers. Guinness also makes this list over many other beers because of its ability to pair so well with so many foods. “Guinness is good for you.” Wine : Duckhorn Vineyards – hailing from Napa Valley, both the red and white wines that we carry, the 2007 Sauvignon Blanc and the 2006 “Decoy” (a Bordeaux style blend) are exceptional wines. Go for the Sauvignon Blanc with cheesy dishes or the soft shell crab; the Decoy with the Wagyu beef. Justin Dunne www.bedsupperclub.com 089

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you ALWAYS check my ID card? Although Thai law states IDs are supposed to be checked at all clubs/bars, this is rarely enforced. Unless of course, you are a very high profile venue like Bed. So, although we know it can be a pain, the Thai police have specifically asked us very nicely to check all IDs. In addition, we also must ensure that all guests are over the age of 20. For Reservations Call 02-651-3537
If I walk down the street will I be hit by a Molotov cocktail or a burning bus? In early April 2009 that was possibility. However, things have now calmed down and other than street vendors monopolizing the sidewalks, a little sunburn or maybe a heavy rain shower, walking outside should be fine. How do I get a Bed World card? The Bed World card is an exclusive membership card that is given to guests strictly through word of mouth. A Bed World Membership card is given to guests that have shown incredible loyalty over the years. What is the best night to bring out of town guests to Bed? That’s a difficult question because it depends on your guests. For a slower paced night, we recommend Sunday or Monday. However if your friends want to party with the capital’s coolest crowd then Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are the ones to head down to Bed. 090
May we book a corporate event / private group dinner at Bed? Yes, of course. All bookings can be made directly through our Events and Sales team. Please contact Junior at 02-651-3537
That’s not on the menu!
Is it true that Bed Supperclub will close for a month for renovations? Yes, although the dates have not been confirmed. Is Sukhumvit 11 becoming the most happening zone in Bangkok? Yes. In late 2008, the Sukhumvit 11 Association came into formation. This Association is composed of over 20 different hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, and other businesses all with the mutual goal of further enhancing Suk 11 as a “must see destination” in Bangkok. In 2009 the Association held an Earth Hour ‘Clean Up Day’ on March 28th and plans are Why do you call it a “Surprise Menu?” in the pipeline for The Queen’s Birthday Charity Run We call it a “Surprise Menu,” because you will not be and a Thai Zombie Walk at Halloween. ordering from a set menu like you would if you dined with us on Sunday thru Thursdays. We have Help yourself to the Salad bar done the Surprise Menu from the beginning in 2002; the chefs spend all afternoon toiling diligently in the kitchen to prepare a menu specific for the guests dining on weekend nights. Thus, we are choosing the menu for you. Hence, the “Surprise” element. Why is the wine so expensive? Yeah, this sucks. Thailand is subject to a most outrageous 400% tax on most wines, which is then, unfortunately, paid for with a more expensive wine list. This tax is so out of whack that even locally produced wines sell for less in Paris than they do here.
Why don’t Bangkok drivers stop at crosswalks? This dates back to an ancient tradition. In the old days when water buffalos were used as the primary mode of transportation, stopping for anything or anyone meant the possibility that night would fall before returning home. After nightfall, if you were not tucked into bed and still on the road, the demons of the night – mostly mosquitoes and ghosts – would see to it that you would not be returning home anytime soon. Hence, to this day, we see heavy speed on the streets and no one stopping for little Johnny who wants to cross the road.
Is Bed safe? Since the New Year’s Eve Santika tragedy, this has been the most frequently asked question…and the answer is YES. Even prior to this very sad and devastating occurrence, Bed has always been fully licensed and has had very rigid fire safety regulations. This includes several easily viewable fire exits, regular fire safety trainings, and a strict policy about any pyrotechnics being permitted for any performances or DJ set. Since the tragedy, like other venues, it has made us take a closer look at anything that might be a cause for concern. We have now eliminated all cocktails that are set alight and we removed all open-flame candles. We only house artworks that comply with fire safety hazards. 091
